Facilitator guide to kit activities
A brief overview of the activities The UnionAID kit is made up of a number of learning activities which are supported by Fact Sheets.
Activity 1a: Why support international development? For conferences and large meetings. (30‐60 mins)
This is a conference discussion format which explores the reasons why we, as workers, should support international projects such as those undertaken by UnionAID. It makes use of a panel to focus the discussion before it is opened up to the rest of the meeting.
Activity 1b: Why support international development? For groups of 20‐30 people. (30‐40 mins)
This is the same subject theme as 1a but adapted for smaller groups or workshops.
Activity 2a‐d: What is the best development model? For groups of 8‐25 in 3‐4 subgroups. (30‐60 mins)
This is an interactive exercise for subgroups to discuss and then report back on different development project models measured against best practice principles. Each subgroup is given one of the a‐d activity sheets. Give them time to read the sheet and discuss the scenario/options presented there (10‐15 minutes). They may jot down points, taking into account the AusAID principles. Then they come back into the full group and take turns to argue their particular case. Ideally, open up for group discussion to decide, of all the different types of aid/projects under consideration, which they feel is most effective/beneficial to the recipients. They should give their reasons. Can a consensus be reached? Activity 3: International Labour Rights: For small groups of up to 20 people. (20‐30 mins) This is a case study group exercise to discuss and compare the application of ILO standards in a New Zealand case study under the Employment Contracts Act and case studies of a Burmese migrant worker in Thailand and a Dalit or Tribal worker in South India. The group is encouraged to draw from their own experience as well as from the relevant fact sheets as outlined in Activity Sheet 3. Activity 4: Just people like us: For small groups of up to 20 people. (20‐30 mins) This aims to identify the common interests between workers in developing countries and workers in New Zealand. The activity sheet itself contains article extracts which can be discussed. Participants should also be encouraged to refer to the relevant fact sheets as outlined in Activity Sheet 4.
