New Zealand Wine Annual Trade Tasting: Dublin 07 february 2013
A LAND LIKE NO OTHER Tucked away in a remote corner of the globe is a place of glorious unspoiled landscapes, exotic flora and fauna, and a culture renowned for its spirit of youthful innovation. New Zealand is a world of pure discovery, and nothing distilLs its essence more perfectly than a glass of New Zealand wine. Welcome to our world.
100% Committed to excellence New Zealand’s wine producing history extends back to the founding of the nation in the 1800s. But it was the introduction to Marlborough’s astonishing Sauvignon Blanc in the 1980s that saw New Zealand wine explode onto the international scene, courtesy of world beating performances in international competitions and rapturous critical reviews. And while Marlborough retains its status as one of the world’s foremost wine producing regions, the quality of wines from elsewhere in the country has also garnered international acclaim. By world standards New Zealand’s production capacity is tiny, accounting for less
than 1% of total volume. And though the average price tag for a New Zealand wine is a reflection of its desirability, few would question its ability to deliver excellent value for money. In fact, it’s the unswerving commitment to quality over quantity that has won New Zealand its reputation as a premium producer. This commitment is evident from the vineyard to the winery: along with sustainability leadership, New Zealand continues to pioneer advances such as canopy management, stainless steel fermentation techniques and screwcaps.

“For a small country with a relatively young wine industry (at least on the international level), New Zealand really has made a name for themselves over recent years. The wines retain an air of mystery that is somewhat unique in this ever-shrinking modern world of ours.” Gregory Dal Piaz, Snooth.com /nzwine JOIN THE CONVERSATION
/newzealandwinegrowers New Zealand is one of the world’s youngest nations. Maori created its traditional cultural expression, and just as Maori artists today are reinterpreting ancient craftworks — such as kahu (cloaks, typically of feather, pictured) in new forms and materials — so our grape growers and winemakers are innovating in the vineyard and winery.

The team at New Zealand Winegrowers would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to the 2013 New Zealand Wine Annual Trade Tasting here in Dublin. 2012 was certainly a challenging year for us all, not only due to the difficult market and economic conditions but also for growers and winemakers alike, as New Zealand experienced a late and cool season – indeed the 2012 vintage is down 18% on 2011. However, we are delighted to have over 30 producers showing 176 wines. In 2012, despite the cool weather in early spring and summer, most regions benefitted from favourable autumn conditions and overall quality of the 2012’s is excellent. April saw excellent vintage conditions with many warm dry days and cool nights. The result is that there will be plenty of vintage highlights for consumers to savour and enjoy, albeit in smaller volume than before. New Zealand’s exports to Ireland are also tracking at an impressive +11% growth (MAT to November 2012). The image of New Zealand together with the quality of wine in the bottle has earned us an enviable reputation within the trade but it is the consumers who remain convinced that it is worth paying a higher price than other wines available to them. It is because of this that the average retail price for NZ wine in Ireland is one of the highest. We are pleased to provide a self pour table to showcase our aromatic varieties and while we are rightly proud of our sauvignon blanc, we hope you will discover that New Zealand can produce other white varieties with equal success. Finally, please note that ALL the wines in the room have been certified as being made in a sustainable way in accordance with the SWNZ programme (Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand). This demonstrates the significant work being done in the vineyard, the winery and the community in New Zealand as part of our commitment to be 100% sustainable by 2012. Many thanks for your support and we look forward to working with you over the next 12 months. If you have any questions the NZW team is on hand to assist. We hope you have a very enjoyable day tasting and doing business.

What does “sustainable” mean for New Zealand wine? For us, sustainability means delivering excellent wine to consumers in a way that enables the natural environment, and the businesses and communities involved, to thrive. Under our Sustainability Policy, wine must be made from 100% certified grapes in fully certified winemaking facilities, and certification must be through an independently audited programme. Central to our sustainability policies is a commitment to keep improving, as new research is undertaken and new technologies are developed. We have an ongoing leadership role in industry research and development projects and, as a result, we’re helping to raise the global bar for sustainability. Seven “pillars” represent our key areas of focus, and we provide guidance and support around each to our members.
PILLARS OF SUSTAINABILITY
Biodiversity
Without the wealth we’re able to harvest from animals, plants and microorganisms, humans couldn’t survive. New Zealand wine producers cultivate and nurture diversity in the vineyard.
Soil, Water, Air
Blessed with an array of distinctive soils, abundant fresh water and famously clear air, our wine producers go to great lengths to take care of these treasures.
Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand is integral to the ongoing success of New Zealand wine. Members are committed to protecting the unique places that make our famous wines by reducing the use of chemicals, energy, water and packaging, and reusing and recycling materials and waste.
Energy Auckland
Even though New Zealand draws most of its ENERGY
electricity from renewable sources, the energy demands of wine production sees the industry employing reduction strategies in all activities.
CHEMICALS
The world expects a certain quality from New Zealand wine; to maintain standards we need to mitigate against disease and pests. Chemical use on the vineyard, however, is the last resort.
BYPRODUCTS
Reduce, reuse and recycle are the watchwords in New Zealand vineyards and wineries. Many byproducts are routinely diverted from the waste stream and turned to beneficial use.
PEOPLE
A sustainable wine industry is for the benefit of people, and its success depends on delivery by people. New Zealand wine producers take their community responsibilities seriously.
BUSINESS
Sustainable practices enable wine producers to add value in a number of meaningful ways, while also making long-term cost savings and are therefore critical to the legacy of our wine industry.
One large wine operation finds energy efficiencies offer significant savings, so the winery employs heat recovery systems to store waste heat from refrigeration for use in winemaking. Night air cooling, and daytime illumination by natural light are two other successful initiatives.
Chemicals Gisborne
Each year, local ladybird populations boom in response to the numbers of the damaging pest mealy bug. “It takes some fortitude not to jump in and spray,” says one viticulturist, “but we endeavor to use no insecticides.” Planting cover crops to encourage ladybirds and other predators has significantly reduced use of chemical controls. Soil, Water, Air: Soil Central Otago
For a winery with vineyards on flash flood-prone slopes, soil health is vital. To sustain their fragile soils they’re increasing organic matter by allowing maximum sward growth before mowing; judiciously applying compostenriched bio-char, and balancing soil nutrient levels to preserve the low fertility that gives essential character to their wines.
Biodiversity: Wetlands Marlborough
Rich in indigenous biodiversity, wetlands have high conservation value. One winery began restoring 50 hectares of wetland in 2004 and has since planted over 3000 native plants — with the help of staff and local communities. Along with positive ecological outcomes, the project has yielded wide-ranging business benefits.

Premium, Sustainable, Diverse As an isolated, cool-climate island nation, New Zealand enjoys an undeniable advantage when it comes to producing distinctive, ultra high quality wines.
pure, intense varietal flavours. This is the foundation of New Zealand wines’ elegance and power, and helps explain their famed balance, structure and food friendliness.
No place is more than 130km, or 80 miles, inland and the proximity of our vineyards to the ocean has a pronounced effect on the character of our wines. Mild, sunny summers and marked differences between day and nighttime temperatures in many regions slow the ripening of the grapes and allow them to develop
And with growing regions extending 1,600km (1,000 miles) — from latitude 36° in the subtropical north to latitude 46° in the mountainous south (the most southerly vineyards in the world) — regional diversity is dramatic, enabling a striking array of wine varieties and styles to flourish.

Riesling - 251ha*
AROMATICS
3,115ha* Riesling - 251ha* Pinot Gris - 173ha*
Abundant, bright fruit. Encompassing dry to dessert styles, Riesling’s already long, illustrious history is continuously improved upon. Pinot Gris has made an impressive debut. Styles range from bone dry to lushly sweet. You’ll find stonefruit and spice characters from sunny Nelson; lemon, lime and spice from Marlborough; and green apples and citrus from the cooler Waipara Valley and Central Otago regions. 90% of Riesling is grown in the South Island, where the climate is ideally suited with cool, long, dry, sunny autumns, large diurnal variance and low humidity.
1,694ha* Pinot Gris - 173ha*
By augmenting the structure and finesse of Cabernet Sauvignon with the vibrant, ripe fruit of Merlot, winemakers in New Zealand’s warmer northerly regions are creating elegant, yet powerfully intense, red wine blends. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends have a long history in New Zealand, dating back to the mid 1800s. Cabernet Sauvignon emerged as a major red variety in New Zealand in the late 1960s/ early 1970s with Merlot emerging much later, in the 1980s and 1990s. More than 80% of plantings are found in Hawke’s Bay and Auckland/Northland.
Other
1,315ha* Excellent examples abound of other aromatic whites, Viognier, Malbec, Tempranillo plus experimental plantings of Italian and Spanish varieties suggesting New Zealand offers many future stand-outs.
CHARDONNAY
3,120ha* Elegant and fruit-driven, the classic New Zealand Chardonnay is mouth-filling, with concentrated citrus and tropical fruit. A crisp acidity balances the flavours, which are often perfectly rounded with oak. Widely planted across the region and made in a range of styles; wines have good structure and body, finely poised acidity and rich citrussy fruit. During the 1990s, plantings of this internationally fashionable variety exceeded those of every other grape. Chardonnay remains planted in every region. Sauvignon Blanc
19,930ha* Pinot noir
5,096ha* Native to Burgundy and notoriously fickle (it is world class only in cool-climate regions), the Pinot Noir grape has found in New Zealand a home away from home. Ranging from perfumed and pretty to dark and brooding, the long growing season gives wines of finesse and depth, with supple structure and good complexity. Since the 1990s, plantings have expanded throughout all regions in the South Island and also in a few selected sites in the North Island. Pinot Noir is now second only to Sauvignon Blanc in production volume, with major plantings in five key regions. There has been 129% growth in export sales of New Zealand Pinot Noir in the last five years, with 9.5 million litres exported in 2011.

Pungently aromatic, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc assails the senses with red capsicum (bell pepper) and gooseberry characters through lush passionfruit and tropical fruit overtones. Other notes include fresh cut grass, tomato stalks, grapefruit or limes. Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s most widely planted varietal. The first wine made in commercial quantities was produced in 1979. Early success at local and international wine competitions boosted winemakers’ confidence in the varietal, as well as consumer demand. By the early 1990s, Sauvignon Blanc was firmly established as New Zealand’s flagship wine, with local and international demand increasing every year.

Services from New Zealand New Zealand is synonymous with the creation of a wide variety of very high quality wines, produced in relatively small quantities, hence the need for an ultra reliable and cost effective groupage consolidation service to enable these special wines to access and realize their market potential abroad. JF Hillebrand’s groupage and consolidation services provide an ideal solution for small consignments of New Zealand wine to Ireland and any other part of the world.
Your partner in wine JF Hillebrand is the world’s leading specialist logistics service provider to the wine industry. With a global network of 47 offices throughout the world’s key wine import and export regions, we offer innovative and reliable logistics services to customers. Our office in New Zealand was founded in 2002, and currently transports more wine from New Zealand to Ireland than any other logistics service provider. We provide a full range of logistics services to the New Zealand wine trade on both imports and exports, and we are delighted to once again be supporting the annual New Zealand Trade Tastings in London and Dublin.
Protection during transportation In the wine industry, our focus is on quality, and winemakers realise that quality in production means quality in consumption. However, shippers must also consider quality in transport, to ensure the investment made in production is not compromised during transportation. Purchasing a higher value product, as a consumer, we are investing in the belief that our purchase has been treated in a way that ensures the experience is as intended and that the wine is in the best possible condition. New Zealand wine travels thousands of miles across the world through a range of climates. This journey exposes the wine to varying extremes of temperature and humidity, with the obvious risk to wine quality and packaging. For example an increase in temperature for white wine to +30°C/+86°F and red to +35°C/+98°F is known to increase the incidence of Turbidity (cloudiness). We are demonstrating our unique VinLiner product again this year – a protective liner foil which is placed in dry shipping line containers to protect wine against:

The vineyard is managed under organic and Biodynamic practices with full Biogro registration from March 2010. The wine maker Guy McMaster came to Urlar from the famed Escarpment vineyard where he was the assistant winemaker. The wines are food orientated with an emphasis on quality, texture and balance. Febvre and Company have had a strong relationship with New Zealand wines since Ross and Barbara Lawson arrived in Ireland with a couple of cases under their arms back in the mid 1990’s. Lawson’s Dry Hills became known the length and breadth of the land as the couple annually spent their holidays travelling every corner of this country. Since then, we have had the pleasure of meeting the Peabody Family whose Craggy Range wines were already famed for their quality and innovation. We have worked closely with them spreading the word about their excellent wines from Craggy Range.

Liberty Wines proudly represent some of the best New Zealand wineries. Our selection reflects the diversity that exists in the world of wine, with the common thread of being ‘wines of origin’. It is up to each producer to decide how best to express the character of their land, or their ‘terroir’ or how they make ‘wines of origin’. Our South Island wines from the Marlborough region are Tinpot Hut, Delta Wines, Greywacke, Lani Wines, The Paddler and Wild Earth from Central Otago. Ata Rangi from the Martinborough region of the North Island completes the selection.

The brothers wanted to make New Zealand wine that was as good as any in the world. The name Matua mah-too-ah in Maori means “head of the family” which is a very appropriate title, as Matua Valley produced New Zealand’s first Sauvignon Blanc in 1974 just outside of Auckland, paving the way for the phenomenon that this unique wine style would soon become. Almost 40 years later Matua Valley is recognised globally as a premium New Zealand wine brand with a broad range of award winning wines and in November 2012 won IWSC NZ Wine Producer of the Year.

Neal Ibbotson combines his extensive viticultural expertise plus Marlborough’s mix of climate and soils with the talent of one of New Zealand’s leading winemaking teams, led by Matt Thomson and Hamish Clark. From the very beginning, the connection to the land and the commitment to its care and preservation remain central to their winemaking philosophy and the release of the first Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc vintage in 1979 was the beginning of a phenomenon which placed New Zealand firmly on the international wine map. The skill and dedication of their winemakers and viticulturists is evident in every bottle of Brancott Estate wine, as is the care and respect for the land and natural resources that allow them to produce each and every one.

At Tiki we believe great wine is created in the vineyard and is an expression of place, people and time. With this in mind we selected Marlborough in NZ as the region where the world best Sauvignon Blancs have been crafted over the last few decades. We then searched Marlborough for high altitude terroir that would produce wines of elegance and distinction. We selected three vineyards in the upper reaches of the famous Wairau Valley and spent years nurturing these vineyards, and building a team of passionate people to produce low yielding grapes of outstanding quality.

Ribbonwood
“At the heart of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley lies the original Ribbonwood Block. Located just north of the Renwick township on Conders Bend Road, the 15 year old vines are planted on an unusual east-west direction, the resulting shade on the south side of each row produces more herbaceous fruit than other sites in Marlborough. The fruit from this vineyard, and that from carefully selected sites nearby, is essential for producing the expressive aromatic and vibrant fruit flavour components for which Ribbonwood wine has become known”. Framingham Wines (Producer) “In a world of increasing blandness we remain individual. In a cluttered wine landscape, where so many seem the same, we believe in doing things differently. The key to our individuality is small batch winemaking. Combining small batches of wine from different parts of the vineyard, we build depth of flavour and texture. We only source fruit from the Wairau Valley, from both our own vineyard and carefully selected grower sites nearby. Strictly limited quantities allow us to take risks and follow our hearts. When Framingham wines are sold out, they’re gone.”
