2 New Zealand Wine- Overview

Year after year, New Zealand’s unique combination of soil, climate and water, our innovative pioneering spirit and our commitment to quality all come together to create premium, regionally and varietally diverse wines. RegioNZ by the Glass allows us to share the results with you. Winemakers from across the country are heralding 2013 as one of the best in history, with an outstanding summer providing near perfect conditions for growing grapes. Philip Gregan, Chief Executive Officer for New Zealand Winegrowers, commented “The result is that we expect the 2013 wines to be vibrant, fruit driven and complex expressions of our diverse grape growing regions. 2013 looks set to be a vintage to remember.” RegioNZ by the Glass is our first showing of wines from the 2013 vintage as well as newly released wines from previous vintages and we look forward to hearing of your own discoveries. A LAND LIKE NO OTHER Tucked away in a remote corner of the globe is a place of glorious unspoiled landscapes, exotic flora and fauna, and a culture renowned for its spirit of youthful innovation. New Zealand is a world of pure discovery, and nothing distilLs its essence more perfectly than a glass of New Zealand wine. DISCOVER our world.

100% Committed to excellence New Zealand’s wine producing history extends back to the founding of the nation in the 1800s. It was the introduction to Marlborough’s astonishing Sauvignon Blanc in the 1980s that saw New Zealand wine explode onto the international scene, courtesy of world beating performances in international competitions and rapturous critical reviews. While Marlborough retains its status as one of the world’s foremost wine producing regions, the quality of wines from elsewhere in the country has also garnered international acclaim. By world standards New Zealand’s production capacity is tiny, accounting for less than

1% of total volume. Though the average price tag for a New Zealand wine is a reflection of its desirability, few would question its ability to deliver excellent value for money. In fact, it’s the unswerving commitment to quality over quantity that has won New Zealand its reputation as a premium producer.

This commitment is evident from the vineyard to the winery, along with sustainability leadership, New Zealand continues to pioneer advances such as canopy management, stainless steel fermentation techniques and screwcaps.

“For a small country with a relatively young wine industry (at least on the international level), New Zealand really has made a name for themselves over recent years. The wines retain an air of mystery that is somewhat unique in this ever-shrinking modern world of ours.” Gregory Dal Piaz, Snooth.com

/newzealandwinegrowers New Zealand is one of the world’s youngest nations. Maori created its traditional cultural expression, and just as Maori artists today are reinterpreting ancient craftworks — such as kahu (cloaks, typically of feather, pictured) in new forms and materials — so our grape growers and winemakers are innovating in the vineyard and winery.

WHAT DOES “SUSTAINABLE” MEAN FOR NEW ZEALAND WINE? For us, sustainability means delivering excellent wine to consumers in a way that enables the natural environment, and the businesses and communities involved, to thrive. Under our Sustainability Policy, wine must be made from 100% certified grapes in fully certified winemaking facilities, and certification must be through an independently audited programme. Central to our sustainability policies is a commitment to keep improving, as new research is undertaken and new technologies are developed. We have an ongoing leadership role in industry research and development projects and, as a result, we’re helping to raise the global bar for sustainability. Seven “pillars” represent our key areas of focus, and we provide guidance and support around each to our members.

PILLARS OF SUSTAINABILITY

Biodiversity

Without the wealth we’re able to harvest from animals, plants and microorganisms, humans couldn’t survive. New Zealand wine producers

Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand is integral to the ongoing success of New Zealand wine. Members are committed to protecting the unique places that make our famous wines by reducing the use of chemicals, energy, water and packaging, and reusing and recycling materials and waste.

cultivate and nurture diversity in the vineyard.

Soil, Water, Air

Blessed with an array of distinctive soils, abundant fresh water and famously clear air,  our wine producers go to great lengths to take care of these treasures.

Energy Auckland

Even though New Zealand draws most of its ENERGY

CHEMICALS

electricity from renewable sources, the energy demands of wine production sees the industry employing reduction strategies in all activities. The world expects a certain quality from New Zealand wine; to maintain standards we need to mitigate against disease and pests. Chemical use

One large wine operation finds energy efficiencies offer significant savings, so the winery employs heat recovery systems to store waste heat from refrigeration for use in winemaking. Night air cooling, and daytime illumination by natural light are two other successful initiatives.

on the vineyard, however, is the last resort.

BYPRODUCTS

PEOPLE

Reduce, reuse and recycle are the watchwords in New Zealand vineyards and wineries. Many byproducts are routinely diverted from the waste stream and turned to beneficial use. A sustainable wine industry is for the benefit of people, and its success depends on delivery by people. New Zealand wine producers take their community responsibilities seriously.

BUSINESS

Sustainable practices enable wine producers to add value in a number of meaningful ways, while also making long-term cost savings and are therefore critical to the legacy of our wine industry. Chemicals Gisborne

Each year, local ladybird populations boom in response to the numbers of the damaging pest mealy bug. “It takes some fortitude not to jump in and spray,” says one viticulturist, “but we endeavor to use no insecticides.” Planting cover crops to encourage ladybirds and other predators has significantly reduced use of chemical controls. Soil, Water, Air: Soil Central Otago

For a winery with vineyards on flash flood-prone slopes, soil health is vital. To sustain their fragile soils they’re increasing organic matter by allowing maximum sward growth before mowing; judiciously applying compostenriched bio-char, and balancing soil nutrient levels to preserve the low fertility that gives essential character to their wines.

Biodiversity: Wetlands Marlborough

Rich in indigenous biodiversity, wetlands have high conservation value. One winery began restoring 50 hectares of wetland in 2004 and has since planted over 3000 native plants — with the help of staff and local communities. Along with positive ecological outcomes, the project has yielded wide-ranging business benefits.

PREMIUM, SUSTAINABLE, DIVERSE As an isolated, cool-climate island nation, New Zealand enjoys an undeniable advantage when it comes to producing distinctive, ultra high quality wines.

flavours. This is the foundation of New Zealand wines’ elegance and power, and helps explain their famed balance, structure and food friendliness.

No place is more than 130km, or 80 miles, inland and the proximity of our vineyards to the ocean has a pronounced effect on the character of our wines. Mild, sunny summers and marked differences between day and night time temperatures in many regions slow the ripening of the grapes and allow them to develop pure, intense varietal

And with growing regions extending 1,600km (1,000 miles) — from latitude 36° in the subtropical north to latitude 46° in the mountainous south (the most southerly vineyards in the world) — regional diversity is dramatic, enabling a striking array of wine varieties and styles to flourish.

KEY VARIETIES (Planted hectares, 2013)*

REd blends

2,012ha* CHARDONNAY

3,253ha*

The classic New Zealand Chardonnay is mouth-filling, with concentrated citrus & tropical fruit, balanced by crisp acidity & refined minerality. The warmer NZ regions typically yield full to medium bodied wines with round, rich flavours, whilst the cooler South Island regions tend to produce medium to light bodied styles with greater acidity, minerality & fresh citrus flavours. As a wine, Chardonnay strongly reflects New Zealand’s unique terroir and the huge diversity within its regions.

Syrah Distinguished by its bright, spicy flavours and elegant texture, akin to elegant Northern Rhône style, New Zealand Syrah is crammed full of plum and savoury black pepper flavours and sometimes even a hint of violets. Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot blends By augmenting the structure and finesse of Cabernet Sauvignon with the vibrant, ripe fruit of Merlot, winemakers in New Zealand’s warmer northerly regions are creating elegant, yet powerfully intense, red wine blends. These blends are notable for their purity of fruit expression and are known for being rich and well structured, showing characters of plum, blackcurrant and chocolate.

AROMATICS

3,617ha* Riesling The South Island’s bright days, cool nights and long, dry autumns create the perfect climate for Riesling. Style ranges from bone dry to lushly sweet. Pinot Gris Grown throughout the country, New Zealand Pinot Gris is more akin to Alsace in style than the drier Pinot Grigio, with notes of apple, pear, honeysuckle, spice and bread. Gewürztraminer New Zealand Gewürztraminer is extremely fragrant, with rose petals, lychee, cinnamon and ginger characters commonly seen.

Sauvignon Blanc

20,429ha*

Pinot noir

5,425ha* Native to Burgundy and notoriously fickle (it thrives only in the most optimal of environments), the Pinot Noir grape has found in New Zealand a home away from home. New Zealand Pinot Noir shows fine tannins and elegance with the added excitement of vibrant, intense fruit and secondary herbal, spice and game characters. The huge diversity in climates and soils in New Zealand enables a wide range of styles from the Pinot producing regions.

In 1973, as Marlborough’s first Sauvignon Blanc vines were being planted, no one could have predicted that their yields would attain superstar status within a couple of decades. The explosive flavours of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc have dazzled wine critics throughout the world, setting the international benchmark for the style. Pungently aromatic, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc assails the senses with green capsicum (bell-pepper) and gooseberry characters through lush passionfruit and tropical fruit overtones. Other notes include freshcut grass, tomato stalks, melons or limes.

Riedel: The Key to Wine With over 250 years of experience in glassmaking, Riedel revolutionised simple glassware when Claus J. Riedel, 9th generation, designed the first collection of varietal-specific stemware in the 1970s. Working with experienced tasters and winemakers, Riedel discovered that wine enjoyed from his glasses showed more depth and better balance. He laid the groundwork for stemware that was purposefully designed as well as beautiful, and made according to the Bauhaus design principle: form follows function. His masterpiece “Sommeliers” set the precedent for a range of series, designed specifically to enhance the wine’s harmony. Each Riedel in the family’s history has contributed to the company’s success and driven the brand forward, with new ideas and daring design concepts. Riedel is renowned for quality and purpose, and offers products that are not just glasses but tools for wine enjoyment. AUCKLAND AND WAIHEKE • Spread across a large, geographically diverse area, the Auckland wine region encompasses the distinctive vineyard island of Waiheke, the historic West Auckland sub-regions of Henderson, Kumeu/Huapai/Waimauku and stretches north to the coastal enclave of Matakana, and south to Clevedon’s rolling hills. Award-winning Gewürztraminer is even crafted next to Auckland’s International Airport.

• Whilst difficult to generalise across such varied terroirs, the sub-regions are united by a few common factors: volcanic, clayrich soils, a temperate maritime climate and significantly, proximity to NZ’s largest, most economically important city. • Home to powerful, intense reds – Bordeauxblends in the north and on Waiheke (which also has thrilling Syrah) – plus world-class Chardonnay and fine aromatics, the modern Auckland wine industry continues to shine.

Located at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, in the beautiful Hauraki Gulf, Man O’ War boasts a beautiful spread of coastal hillsides with high cliffs and stunning beaches. This rugged coastline was ‘discovered’ in 1769 by Captain James Cook, today we take responsibility for maintaining its beauty and integrity for future generations. We first introduced grapes to Man O’ War in 1993, firm in the belief that world class wines could be produced here. Since then we have carefully selected and developed 76 individual pockets of hillsides, each chosen for the unique and exceptional qualities they bring to our wines.

Te Awa SYDNEY

Te Awa (River of God) is reference to the mystical underground rivers beneath the property. These rivers are thought to follow the course of the old Ngaruroro River bed which changed its direction in 1867 after a massive flood. Our vineyards (est 1992) are located on the exposed river bed and original banks of this river. Beautiful free-draining gravels, the famed Hawke’s Bay climate, and viticultural vigilance deliver exceptional fruit. Pockets of silt, sand and clay deposited by the ebb and flow of the old river provide good variation in fruit for the winemakers to blend and balance our wines.

Escarpment Vineyard SYDNEY

One of New Zealand’s most famous winemakers, Larry McKenna is the man behind Escarpment. Larry’s name goes hand in hand with the best quality Pinot Noir from New Zealand. The vineyards are situated above a natural escarpment above the Huarangarua River on ancient gravels. Overlooking them are the Aorangi Ranges where Maori legend has it that the Polynesian voyager Kupe abandoned three canoes - hence the shape. Kupe’s image is on the label.

Clos Marguerite, clearly a very small vineyard by NZ standard, is perched on a North-facing, free-draining terrace of the Awatere River. At Clos Marguerite, “old-world” viticulture and “newworld” winemaking techniques are artfully combined by Jean-Charles, an experienced œnologue, agronomical-engineer and soil-scientist, who started his career in Bordeaux Chateaux before moving to NZ, to create unique, age-worthy wines. Marguerite and Jean-Charles grow their fruit on narrowly spaced rows of manicured vines. Handpicked, the grapes travel to the onsite gravity-fed winery. The resulting wines are a true reflection of the terroir, producing subtle yet intense, food-driven styles. The name refers to this “enclosed” and all-inclusive wine-growing concept.

Isabel Vineyard SYDNEY

Isabel Estate Vineyard is a family owned winery producing estate grown and estate bottled wines. Established in 1982, we harvest from some of the oldest vines in Marlborough. We offer 5 varietals, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Dry Riesling, Chardonnay & Pinot Noir, and produce only one bottling of each under our Estate label. It is our aim to make inspired wines with a strong expression of their individual style and character, as determined by the vineyard soil and site. The Isabel ‘family recipe’ embraces the tradition of minimal intervention winemaking - harnessing the power of good fruit without making fruity wines.

The company is owned by Konrad and Sigrun Hengstler. The Hengstlers originally migrated from Germany to Australia and having decided to become involved in the wine industry realised New Zealand and specifically Marlborough was the place to plant Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir. The company’s two vineyards in the Wairau and Waihopai Valleys were first planted in 1996. The Wairau Valley vineyard on Foxes Island presents a warm site producing early ripening fruit. Waihopai Valley is typically cool climate; consequently fruit from the two sites are blended to achieve an optimum balance between ripe and juicy fruit flavours with fresh and complex acid structure.

When Yugoslavian immigrant Ivan Yukich planted his first vineyard in 1934, the New Zealand wine industry was still in its infancy. That vineyard - Montana, meaning mountain, after its location in the Waitakere Ranges west of Auckland - sowed the seeds to make it one of New Zealand’s leading wineries. Today Montana is known as Brancott Estate, the pioneers of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Through Pernod Ricard Winemakers we have gathered under the one roof many of New Zealand’s leading wines brands, including Brancott Estate, Stoneleigh and Church Road.

Sherwood Estate Wines Ltd Sherwood Estate Wines was founded by Dayne and Jill Sherwood, with the first vines being planted in 1987 and first wines made in 1990. Sherwood Estate’s wines are produced from company owned vineyards in the Waipara Valley and on the Wairau Plains in Marlborough. All wines are processed at Sherwood Estate’s own winery in the Waipara Valley, the grapes being transported from the various vineyards directly for crushing, pressing and fermentation. Bottling is also undertaken with their own modern bottling line. Sherwood Estate believe in controlling all aspects of the wine making process themselves, thereby ensuring greater quality control.

CENTRAL OTAGO AND WAITAKI VALLEY • Historically noted as ‘pre-eminently suitable’ for winemaking (Bragato, 1895); indeed, the region’s first Gold Medal was for ‘Burgundy’ in Sydney in 1881, from vines planted in 1864 by frenchman Jean Feraud. • A spectacular landscape and sophisticated tourist culture also home to some of the world’s best Pinot Noir; not to mention impressive, vivid white wines.

• The extreme climate has rewarded careful site selection with wines of great intensity and finesse and there is increasing focus on sub- regional expression. • The main sub-regions lie within close reach but the distinctive mountainous terrain means each occupies a unique niche of climate, aspect and altitude. Soils can vary considerably within each sub-region though a stony free- draining base is common to all.

Located in Central Otago, the world’s southernmost winemaking region, Akarua was established in 1996. Austere, arid hills and valleys characterise the Bannockburn sub-region where Akarua has its 50 hectare vineyard and winery. Intensely hot dry summers are born from a close leeward proximity to the Southern Alps, stifling much of the inclement weather arising from the west. Soil condition is perverse, a combination of fragmented schist rock and light sand. Yet it is these extremes that extract the best from our vines and give rise to an amazing array of flavours and other qualities in Akarua’s range of stunning wines.

NOTES

Maori whakairo (carving) was not only a source of identity and a record of events, it was also used in decoration. The presence of a beautifully crafted work, that takes what nature offers and improves it, can augment any experience. Much the way a glass of beautifully balanced New Zealand wine can augment any dish—from the lightest to the most lavish.
