n this day and age, who doesn’t need that occasional boost of energy to make it through the day? I know I do. International coffee chains and mainstream energy drink companies are raking in the bucks and making a fortune off of us just because we need that additional jolt. Yet, tell me why we solely rely on caffeine when there are other “super foods” out there that are just as beneficial? Take unagi, for instance. Unagi (freshwater eel) has been consumed in Japan for thousands of years — and has obviously captured the attention of people around the world in recent history not only for its great taste, but also for its richness in protein and vitamins, including vitamins A and E. Then, add the belief that unagi gives you great stamina and fights fatigue, and there you go! Yes, unagi has always been right up there at the top of my best seafoods list. I’ve grown up eating unagi, as Mom would always prepare it the typical way: filleted and deboned, glaze-grilled and served with steamed rice. The taste of unagi is clean and light, the meat tender, and always onolicious. So, this week, Ono readers, it’s time to get into full gear and get energized! There’s no time for sluggishness, as we’re in for an unagi marathon at the following Ono, You Know establishments. Let’s go!
Sakura Restaurant The best of Japanese-American fare is in full bloom at Sakura Restaurant on Waialae Avenue, which it now calls home after relocating from its previous space at Olomana Golf Course.

Born and raised in the restaurant industry, the Tsuchiya brothers, Junichiro and Ryojiro, now co-own the restaurant, where Ryojiro also serves as head chef. And blending their Japanese roots with local inspiration is what the Tsuchiyas do best. For a take on Sakura Restaurant’s fusion cuisine, patrons can enjoy everything from udon to pasta, and even Spare Ribs and Okinawa Sweet Potato Pudding. Yet, if you’re itching for a edible creation that consists uniquely of unagi and showcases an alluring culmination of Japanese flavors, set your sights on Unagi Avocado Donburi ($14.75), which features a bowl of vinegar sushi rice topped with a slab of tasty unagi and creamy avocado drizzled with kabayaki sauce, along with nori, tobiko and yamaimo (flaky Japanese potato), and served with miso soup. “Unagi Avocado Donburi is very popular and it’s unique,” Junichiro says. “If you like unagi, we also offer Unagi Tamago Donburi. It’s like your traditional oyako donburi (chicken and egg), but the chicken has been replaced with unagi.” Now, Unagi Tamago Donburi has my name (and fingerprints) written all over it as I have an eternal love

estaurants boasting hot new food trends — specialty ingredients, exotic flavor profiles and healthy “au natural” offerings — are at the forefront of today’s contemporary dining scene. Yet, Asahi Grill dispels the belief that these aforementioned characteristics are only associated with fads. This Ward Avenue hot spot, which opened its doors in February 2007, is a prime example that classic, highquality cuisine is here to stay. Local, island-style fare with bursts of Asian inspiration is the foundation of Asahi Grill, where loyal patrons and new food enthusiasts routinely pack this 50-seat restaurant, eager to diversify their palates. “Our goal is to make our customers happy with our great service and delicious food,” says manager Victoria Sayno. “There’s something for everyone here, no matter what you’re craving.” Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Asahi Grill distinguishes itself with an eclectic spread of signature creations. Oxtail Soup is one entrée in particular that has earned the eatery rave reviews. Asahi Grill’s Oxtail Soup was made famous since its beginnings at Kapiolani

to add a bit of shoyu to the ginger or Sriracha sauce to the soup for an added zest. Observe the array of diners who get their fill here on a daily basis and you’ll notice a wide spread of ethnic diversity. However, all patrons have one common goal: to chow down, big time. “Of course, we can always count on the locals — they love it here. But we’ve also noticed an increase in visitors from Japan, China and Australia

to the restaurant,” Sayno explains. “What makes us unique is our friendly service. It’s important that we treat everyone like family — it’s the top priority,” she adds. “The Brothers Cazimero come here often. “And all dishes are made from original recipes. Nothing has changed a bit.” During Dining Out’s most recent visit to the restaurant, breakfast lovers devoured the Asahi Breakfast ($9.50), which consists

of tossed salad, miso soup, rice and a choice of mahi mahi, salmon/saba or opakapaka, and Banana Hotcakes ($6.25, $4.75 half order). For lunch, Chopped Steak also ($8.50, served all day) appears to be a popular choice among patrons. This local favorite features tender beef stir-fried with vegetables in a savory sauce. “Our fried rice also is a standout,” Sayno says, “It’s made from an original
recipe, and we have Kim Chee Fried Rice ($7.25, $5.75 small order), Lup Cheong Fried Rice ($7.25, $5.75 small order) and Portuguese Fried Rice with Two Eggs ($6.75).” Chicken Katsu Curry ($9.95), katsu-style chicken fillet doused in savory curry sauce served with white or brown rice and mac or tossed salad is a proven winner as well. And Spicy Ahi and Shrimp Don ($12.75) is a hearty classic, which presents a bowl of rice topped with spicy ahi with tobiko, shrimp and sweet egg roll drizzled with a special sauce. If you’re in the mood for more than one of Asahi Grill’s classics, opt for a Combination Plate, which can include shrimp and vegetable tempura and saba, seasoned and grilled to perfection. Rice, tsukemono, tofu, soup and tossed salad complete this sumptuous meal. With a multitude of
choices already gracing its menu, Asahi Grill is everexpanding its cuisine. In fact, according to Sayno, Special Steamed Fish ($9.50) Bulgogi Don ($9.50) — Korean-style teriyaki beef — and Oxtail Ramen ($9.95) have recently made their debut. “We want customers to be aware of our daily specials as well,” Sayno says. “For instance, on Monday we have a choice of Pig’s Feet Soup ($10.95) or Spaghetti ($7.95), Tuesday we feature Baked Short Rib ($10.95), Wednesday is Roast Turkey ($8.75) or Tripe Stew ($8.50) … we have specials for every day of the week. “Everyone is like ohana here … family. We want you to feel as if you’re at home at Asahi Grill.” With plans for expansion supposedly in the works, Asahi Grill will continue to serve up timeless classics for generations to come.

ung Hee Fat Choy! Just in time for Chinese New Year (Feb. 10), Happy Days Chinese Seafood Restaurant in Kaimuki is selling its popular Gau ($5) now through early March. Gau (also called niangau) is one of the many traditional Chinese foods that are eaten during Chinese New Year with a symbolic purpose for a year of good luck, health and prosperity. The name translates to “moving up in the year,” while the sticky texture (similar to mochi) represents the family sticking together. It's also topped with sesame seeds for

For example, Jai ($9.95) is available all year-round but is commonly eaten as the first meal on the first day of the year as a way to start fresh. Also known as monk's food, this vegetarian dish is a delicious stew of vegetables, including various types of mushrooms and long rice noodles, which represent longevity. Veggie power T here’s been so much talk about equality these days — whether it’s women in the military, same-sex marriage … people want equal rights. But what about equal eats? A lot restaurants out there still don’t have anything to offer non-carnivores. How hard is it, really, to come up with just one meat-free plate? But just like the aforementioned military and marriage, times are changing for vegetarians, too, as more and more people are concerned about their weight and overall health, and consequently what they put into their bodies. Well, keep The Mandalay in mind, as the spacious, elegant Hong Kong-style restaurant on Alakea Street always has vegetarians in mind, and owner Linda Chan recommends a few customer faves from the extensive menu that

contain no meat or fish at all. Vegetarian Lettuce Wraps ($12.95) is a fun-toeat dish that presents six lettuce cups to fill with stir-fried minced vegetables including water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, carrots and celery. There’s plenty of food, yet it’s light and won’t weigh you down. For something a bit more hearty, try Braised Tofu with Mixed Vegetables ($9.95). This appealing combination of textures and flavors features braised deep-fried tofu with black mushrooms, baby bok choy, baby corn, Chinese peas, broccoli and more. With Chinese New Year coming up next month (gung hay fat choy!), traditional Jai ($10.95) is not to be missed. The Mandalay’s impressive “monk food” recipe contains 18 different ingredients, with the ubiquitous long rice mixed with black mushrooms, black fungus, lotus seed, red dates, water chestnuts, bean curd, carrots … and so much more. It’s a good luck dish for the new year with a whole lot of goodness packed in. Equal eats at The Mandalay — and power to the (vegetarian) people.

he kaiten-style sushi served at Genki Sushi has long been a local favorite in the islands, but did you know that the restaurant also has an array of desserts that everyone from keiki to kupuna will love? The Cupcake Red Velvet ($3.80), Cupcake Peanut Butter ($3.80) and bitesized Sesame Balls ($2.20 for three) have been seen on the rotating belt, but there also are desserts that you can order from your server. The Pumpkin Crunch ($4.80) is a featured item that combines pumpkin and vanilla ice cream with a caramel center all coated with a crisp crust. This hearty dessert makes you feel at home and is big enough to share.
“We just decided to try something different and people seem to like it, so we’ll probably bring it to the menu as a permanent item,” says director of purchasing David Moon. That’s good news, as it adds more selection to the sweet treats list. Ice cream goodies also are available for purchase and include the Hawaiian Style Sherbert ($2.20), Green Tea Ice Cream ($2.20) and Oreo Ice Cream ($2.80), which is a hit with the kids. The ever-popular Mochi Ice Cream ($3.80 for two) is available in strawberry, chocolate 5 and vanilla.

ver wonder what goes on behind the scenes at your favorite restaurant? Well, much of the credit goes to the many chefs, owners and managers who work diligently day in and day out to make sure Hawaii’s diners enjoy a memorable experience. This week, Dining Out talks story with Atlantis Seafood & Steak’s executive chef Almario Betiong, who gives us a little taste of what fuels his culinary drive.

What is your favorite dish on the menu? Why? Kona Coffee Lamb Chops. I enjoy the taste of Lamb and think the way I do it is a unique way to flavor the dish. I use Crushed Kona Coffee to crust the pieces and it is an interesting Pacific twist to the dish.
What is your favorite ingredient to work with? Why? Any fresh herbs. Especially island/Pacific-grown items. The aromas, freshness and flavors really accentuate the looks and flavors of any dish. Is there a dish that you create that's not on your menu, but available upon request? Just about

We get many vegetarian, vegan and allergy requests, and I am always happy to come up with something, using what we have in stock, that I believe customers would enjoy. What are your culinary goals? $25.95 at dinner, while children ages 4 to 8 receive discounted rates of $13 and $15, respectively. “When you say Yakiniku, it refers to the Japanese term for table-top cooking, but we offer a wide range of traditional Korean-style dishes,” explains manager Kelly Park. “Some people like their meat cooked a certain way, and with the grills at each table, you go to the buffet, pick what you want and prepare each item the way you like it. And, you can keep going back for more — eat as much as you like for
one price. You really get your money’s worth.” More than 50 selections grace the buffet line at Camellia Buffet, including Kalbi Short Ribs, Barbecue Beef, Barbecue Pork, Spicy Chicken, Korean Pancake, Teriyaki Chicken and multiple Kim Chee varieties. The dinner buffet also includes Flat Steak, Fresh Shrimp, Spicy Fried Chicken and various desserts, including ice cream from the eatery’s self-serve machine. Camellia Buffet also serves

up local favorites including Fried Rice, Orange Chicken, and Mandoo — all of which are made fresh and in-house, and have grown in popularity, especially among children. “The fried rice and mandoo are very popular with the kids, and you can taste the freshness because it’s all homemade, not store bought,” says Park. “We also make our sauces with traditional Korean recipes and flavors that we pass on through many generations. We use high-quality meats. Customers will tell me
that they can taste the difference, and they say, ‘You guys are the best,’ and keep coming back.” The buffet lineup also features an array of side dishes that add unique flavors and textures to the dining experience. Customers may select from fresh and hot soups, including Seaweed Soup, Miso Soup and Red Bean Porridge, as well as a host of additional offerings such as Pickled Onions, Cucumber Kim Chee, Soybeans, Green Salad, Seaweed and Macaroni Salad.
The eatery also offers beverages from its full bar, and customers can indulge in Korean Sweet Tea, a popular after-meal drink made fresh and served daily. “If you’re looking for a different kind of dining experience, I would ask customers to come in and give us a try,” Park says. “If you haven’t been here in a while, we have some new items on the buffet in addition to the original favorites. We’ve been able to keep our prices low without sacrificing the taste — that is very im-
portant to us and our customers.” In addition to its vast assortment of buffet selections, Camellia Buffet also offers a takeout menu. Diners may choose from an assortment of local favorites, including Kalbi ($11.95), Bulgogi ($9.95), Spicy Pork ($9) and Bibim Kooksoo ($10), a popular spicy cold noodle dish. I
f you’re a big-time fan of local grinds with an American twist, then a paradise on earth is at your fingertips at Big City Diner — your one-stop shop for all of your mouth-watering favorites. Dining Out recently visited the restaurant at Ward Centers, and brought along award-winning vocalist Starr Kalahiki for this week’s Dining with the Stars. “Big City Diner is a gathering place for everyone. My friends and I often come here after shows,” says Kalahiki, who’s been singing for as long as she can remember. “What I love about Big City Diner is that there’s a wide selection of dishes for people to choose from and I love the local feel. If you have guests from out of town then this is the perfect place to ease them in to American-local cuisine.” Big City Diner initially jumped into Hawaii’s culinary scene back in 1998, when it opened a restaurant in Kaimuki. Four other locations soon followed —
in Kailua, Ward, Waipio and Pearlridge. A diner theme is prominent at the restaurant, as patrons settle in to red vinyl booths ready to take on the enormous portions of food that’s served. Sure, your typical diner cuisine of burger, fries and a shake is a given here, but in honor of Kalahiki, Big City Diner’s accommodating staff presented us with a slew of items that were most assuredly of five-star status. First there was Fire-Roasted Portobello Mushroom Salad ($10.99), which featured savory sliced Portobello mushrooms nestled on a bed of organic greens and chopped romaine tossed with diced Roma tomatoes and sweet red onions. “BIG” croutons, imported Parmesan cheese, red onion rings and fresh lemon topped off the salad, which was then splashed with Ancho-Chili dressing. Then, we were presented with Grilled Tequila Chicken & Portobello Mushroom Stack ($12.99), an herb-marinated chicken breast topped with Big City Diner’s tequila cream sauce, grilled Portobello

mushroom and jack cheese on a bed of fresh sautéed spinach. “I love Portobello mushrooms, and I love how the mushrooms are in a variety of dishes here. Everything is so good!” Kalahiki exclaims. “Who needs meat when you have these mushrooms?” Let’s not get carried away, Starr. After all, Baby Back Ribs with Big City’s Famous GuavaBBQ Sauce ($22.99, big slab) is a force to be reckoned with. This signature entrée is slowroasted for five hours until the meat literally falls off the bone. Next up: Grilled Asian Fish Oriental ($10.99) This weekly special brought out the fish lover in us as a flavorful piece of swai, breaded and grilled to perfection, and served with a sesame oil and shoyu sauce. “It’s a very sweet and light fish,” observes Kalahiki. “I love fish. I grew up eating a lot of fish — fresh fish and fried fish. “I wouldn’t say I have the most diverse palate, but offer me something and I’ll be blown away and very grateful. I look forward to educating myself on all kinds of food. But Big City
Diner’s Old Fashioned Bubbies Chocolate Shake ($5.99) is awesome,” she adds of this little slice of heaven in a glass. In between hearty laughs and forkfuls of superlative cuisine, Kalahiki shared her musical journey with us. A natural-born talent, Kalahiki was immersed in the music scene at a young age. The daughter of a Pentecostal minister, Kalahiki was raised with musical fellowship and influenced by her father’s collection of jazz and bossa nova LPs. Throughout the years, the University Lab School graduate spread her wings and sang in six operas with Hawaii Opera Theatre, performed the role of the fairy godmother in Diamond Head Theatre’s Cinderella and landed a job working with the cast of Ulalena on Maui. Kalahiki returned to Honolulu thereafter and fronted the modern alternative rock band Missing Dave for a year prior to securing a gig as the jazz headliner on the Star of Honolulu dinner cruise.

She also continued to develop her craft as a member of the R&B group Eight-o-Eight as well as funk band Toyz of Pleasure. Most recently, she also was a featured singer and back-up vocalist for Roberts Hawaii’s Return to Paradise Starring Lani Misalucha. Last year, Kalahiki experienced a monumental moment in her career when she took home not just one but two Na Hoku Hanohano awards for Most Promising Artist and Jazz Album of the Year in honor of her debut album titled Salt. “I was totally blown away when I won. I didn’t know that anyone was paying attention,” she admits. “Salt features jazz arrangements of songs that I just love to sing. The songs aren’t necessarily jazz standards; there’s a lot of R&B tunes, and I even did a cover of the song Popular from the musical Wicked.” Kalahiki now performs every Monday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Tropics Bar & Grill at Hilton Hawaiian Village. During her performances, she takes audiences on an amazing musical adventure with every song. “I’m also working on several musical projects this year spanning the musical genre landscape, from new modern Hawaiian music to big band and hot new alternative tracks. “Music is always everywhere, all around, ever moving, ever healing,” she says. Talk about “Starr” power. Kalahiki has it all.

he menu at Violets Grill is as simple and down to earth as the people who have made this restaurant a Kalihi staple for 60 years. Whether it's the popular oxtail soup, saimin, big egg breakfasts, miso soup, garlic ahi or mochiko chicken, everything is unpretentious and fittingly represents the generations of diners who keep the business thriving. Violets serves local food for local diners who appreciate its version of Japanese and Okinawan dishes. I have it from a reliable source that the Okinawan Soba is delicious! The appetizers are no different. The Potato/Mac Salad ($6) is simply prepared with common ingredients, just the way customers like it. Ahi Katsu ($10) begins with

It's as simple and tasty as the Chicken Katsu ($10), which is prepared in the same manner. Looking for more fish appetizer options? The Ahi Belly ($12) just might do the trick. It’s salted, peppered and grilled until flaky. That's it. Easy and simple food is good food. That's exactly what Violets has done for six decades. 3

t’s often said that one never forgets an evening spent at Kobe Steakhouse & Sushi Bar. From the excitement of teppanyaki dining, in which culinary masters fire up alluring entrees on flattop grills in front of patrons, to the warmth of this cozy Japanese inn-style eatery, Kobe offers more than just a meal — it’s a dining extravaganza. Once settled around a table, customers will be taken care of the whole night as they are whisked away to a world of prime steak and divine seafood. While the restaurant has been an oasis of eats for more than 35 years, it continues to roll out new flavors regularly. This year, Kobe’s chefs have had an insatiable craving for
calamari, which led them to create their Calamari Specials filled with succulent squid filets like you’ve never experienced. “The calamari’s really tender,” says owner and general manager Roy Nakamura. “I don’t think it needs much seasoning, but you can dip it in our ginger sauce for an additional taste. It’s a really flavorful menu item.” As all good calamari should be, these plump filets are nowhere near rubbery. They’re offered in the Steak & Calamari Combo ($35.95) with 5 ounces of sirloin steak and the same amount of calamari, or the Seafood Trio

($42.95) with 4 ounces of Nova Scotia scallops, 5 ounces of calamari and 3 ounces of Tristan lobster tail. Like all of Kobe’s entrees, these sizzling specials come with a teppan shrimp appetizer, tsukemono, 2 shabu shabu soup, assorted grilled vegetables, beans sprouts, steamed rice and hot green tea to enjoy throughout the meal. New menu items extend to the eatery’s lounge as well, where a smoked version of the tender squid debuts in a Calamari Salad ($8) complete with avocado, mixed greens, tear drop tomatoes, cucumber and homemade sesame-shoyu dressing. The calamari’s smoky flavor isn’t too overwhelming, and the in-house smoking process lends a delicate sweetness to this unbelievably good seafood. Diners may request the salad in the main dining room as well. If you’re looking for a dinner filled with just as many memories as flavors, it’s got to be Kobe.

falls off the bone, so you can debone it yourself and mix it up with the ramen. It mixes very well with the mustard cabbage,” says David Chang, vice president of Little Village. “This is not a traditional Chinese noodle, but personally we feel the ramen is the best fit. The texture is nice and very smooth and it goes well with the broth.” Flavored with special fish stock, the broth imparts a rich flavor that pairs up perfectly with the main feature — a duck leg braised for two hours. The combined flavors prove irresistible and are best summed up by Chang himself: “I find my-
self wanting to eat more.” But, if for some reason the tender, fall-off-the-bone leg isn’t your style, order the ramen instead with a duck breast for an additional $1.50. Another item worth looking up for is Jai ($11.95). Kick start your Chinese New Year with this traditional dish that is only served during this time of the year. The vegetarian dish is designed to nourish in more ways than one. “You are what you eat in Chinese tradition and Jai has so much symbolism. It brings good fortune and good health,” Chang says. Mushroom, bamboo shoots, snow peas, water chestnuts, Chinese cabbage, red dates, fried tofu, won yee fungus and black moss are stirfried together with long rice and red bean paste for a smoky, earthy and hearty meal.

O
ne recent afternoon when Dining Out dropped into Panya Bistro in Ala Moana Center, a woman at a nearby table approached us. Looking at one of the dishes on our table, she says, “I have never seen that one. It must be new.” This scenario is a perfect example of two truths about Panya — that it often is coming up with new dishes, and that it has cultivated a dedicated following of regular customers. The restaurant, after all, does have something for everyone. “It is a fusion style where East meets West,” explains operations manager Kiana Huang. “The menu has a lot of

variety and a lot of different choices. We are trying to satisfy all of our customers, no matter what background you come from.” A good place to start is with appetizer Grilled Steak with Ginger Green Onion Sauce ($15.95). “We grill the steak until it is medium rare and we serve it with our homemade green onion sauce. It is very juicy,” she says.
One great thing about Panya is that many of ingredients are homemade, including its breads. For a taste of one of its homemade sauces, try the White Wine Seafood Spaghetti ($19.95), which features tiger shrimp and clams sauteed with bacon, onion and garlic in homemade white wine sauce. In honor of Chinese New Year, Panya is offering a special dish for cus-

ow an elegant restaurant with a varied menu, Panya Bistro first started as a bakery in McCully. “We started from just making only the pastries. We were more into just desserts, sliced cake and birthday cakes,” explains operations manager Kiana Huang. Customers liked the food so much that they started requesting other things from Panya. “They started asking, ‘What about some coffee, soup and salad?’ As we built up our clientele, the customers started having more requests,” Huang recalls. The restaurant soon opened a second location and expanded its menu to include light meals. Over the years, it continued to expand menu selections based on customer feedback, as well as what the staff wanted to eat. “Once in a while, it will pop up in your head, ‘What if this goes with that?’ Or, ‘What if we use this with that sauce?’” Huang says. “We kind of create our own menu from our own dining experience here. “We always eat here, too,” she adds, “so we have to make sure that we are eating healthy. And we want to serve healthy food to our customers, too.”

tomers to take home to celebrate the occasion. Jai ($22 for a small, which serves four to six people; $45 for a large, which serves eight to 10) features mushroom, bean curd, chestnuts, seaweed and ginkgo, and will be available for pre-ordered take-out. “We custom made this for the new year,” Huang explains. “For the Chinese tradition, during the new year, we only eat Jai. We only eat vegetables, we don't eat meat. The idea is to cleanse your body to start the new year.” Customers must pre-order the Jai. Pickup will take place Feb. 8–10. In addition to Jai, customers can also check out some special desserts for the new year. These include the Gau Mochi Dessert with Brown Sugar ($6), Red Bean ($6.50) or Coconut Cream ($6.50). “They are very sweet,” Huang says. “And you can just eat them cold as a dessert, or you can pan-fry them a little bit to serve it hot.” Another dessert special is the Deep Fried Sesame Red Bean Ball ($1.50). Finally, for some good luck in the new year, don't miss the Panya Fortune Shortbread Cookie ($3.95), which is modeled after the red paper that is typically distributed for the holiday. The cookies feature Chinese writing that say things like “Happy New Year” or Good Luck.” “They can buy that to give to their family and friends for good luck,” Huang says. As Panya Bistro approaches another year, Huang says that they are reminded to thank the people who have helped them garner success throughout the years — their customers. “We want to thank our customers for their support and their loyalty throughout the years,” Huang adds. “We could not do it without them.” Contact Christina O’Connor at diningout@staradvertiser.com

Honeydew Smoothie with grass jelly ($4.95)
fter spending more than 25 years cooking a variety of tasty dishes at home for her family, Kim Nguyen decided to share her passion for food with the general public. The restaurateur opened Hi Sandwich & Drink in the Waimalu Shopping Center about a month ago, and customers are raving about what Nguyen describes as Vietnamese fusion food. “I really like to cook at home, and I decided to open the restaurant so that I can share that passion with my customers,” says Nguyen, who also owns the popular eatery Pho Five-O in the same shopping center. Freshly made French bread, which is gently toasted so the bread remains soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside, and buttery croissants set the stage for the more than 20 sandwich varieties available at Hi Sandwich & Drink. After just a month, customers are already developing a following for the freshly made sandwiches, including BBQ Chicken Sandwich on French Bread and Smoked Ham Sandwich on Croissant Bread. All sandwich selections, including the aforementioned favorites, start at $6 and vegetarian options are also available. The Vietnamese Special Sandwich ($6.75, noted on the menu as the Hi Special) brings together pate, char siu pork and steamed pork that are then topped with vegetables. Other sandwich varieties include Meat Ball, Tuna, Ham & Cheese, Turkey Cheese and Turkey Breast ($6 each). Nguyen explains that she utilizes fresh vegetables in her sandwiches, including cucumber, carrots, white onions and Chinese parsley. The veggies are prepared with a special blend of seasoning to enhance all the flavors. The restaurant also specializes in real-fruit smoothies, and features 22 varieties of the flavorful beverages. With each selection, including Honeydew Smoothie and Thai Tea Smoothie ($4.95 apiece), diners may also add their choice of black jelly pearls, grass jelly or colored fruity jelly. Customers may

also add an additional jelly flavor to the 24ounce smoothie for just 35 cents more. “Before I opened this restaurant, I visited some other places that served smoothies using powdered flavoring,” explains Nguyen. “I wanted to use real fruit, because it tastes much better and is healthier for you.” The vast beverage menu at Hi Sandwich & Tea also includes Bubble Teas ($4.95 for each 24-ounce serving), which are available in a host of flavors such as Vanilla, Café Latte, Strawberry, Green Apple and Mocha Coffee. The Bubble Tea selections are crafted with a blend of black and green tea, which Nguyen brews daily in house. Nguyen also recommends Condensed Milk Iced Coffee ($3.50), a Vietnamese java drink that offers a cool rush of bold flavors. “Our customers can enjoy some of the same food that I love to cook at home,” says Nguyen of the Hi Sandwich & Drink experience. “The real-fruit smoothies are delicious, and you can really taste the difference.”
