H

appy Sunday and happy eating, Ono readers! For me, weekends are the perfect, most opportune time to eat to my heart’s content. Unlike weekdays with a long to-do list to conquer and deadlines to meet, weekends are all about relaxing, sleeping in, having fun, working out and really enjoying every bite of fabulous cuisine.

Now, if it weren’t for being able to visit a number of top-notch restaurants a week as part of my job responsibilities, it would be hard to find time to snag a delicious lunch — and a homemade peanut butter sandwich just doesn't cut it every time. That’s when I bask in the glory of an onolicious bento! Bentos could perhaps be one of the best culinary creations on earth — it’s a hearty meal, usually consisting of carbs, vegetables and protein, beautifully presented on a single plate. No hassle involved and extremely satisfying for the tummy.

So, this week, tremendously grateful for bentos, I visited some of my favorite restaurants known for their Ono, You Know bento masterpieces. Thanks to them, finding something to eat is absolutely stress-free. Go ahead, I say, bring on the bentos!

On the go?

Kozo Sushi has it all, especially when it comes to mouth-watering takeout sushi options. Yet, Kozo doesn’t stop there, instead this well-known eatery is making a name for itself with its delicious bentos as well. With many locations islandwide, Kozo Sushi Pearl City is just one of the many locations pleasing patrons with tasty bentos such as Fried Chicken Bento ($6.99) and Ebi Fried Bento ($6.99).

Fried Chicken Bento features morsels of

crispy fried chicken drizzled with Kozo’s signature teriyaki sauce, furikake rice, two pieces of shinko maki and two pieces of futo maki (consisting of tofu, kampyo, cucumber and egg) and a tossed salad.

For those craving shrimp, Ebi Fried Bento will quickly have your mouth watering and stomach growling in hunger, as it presents you with three irresistible pieces of fried shrimp topped with a savory teriyaki sauce. The shrimp takes the spotlight here, no doubt, but it’s paired with a serving of furikake rice, one piece of inari sushi, two pieces of shinko maki and a side salad to make for one scrumptious meal.

And we can’t leave out the classic Chicken Katsu Bento ($6.99) presented with thinly sliced chicken kastu served over white rice and doused in Kozo’s house-made katsu sauce. For a match made in heaven, the bento comes with two pieces each of shinko maki and California maki, one piece of cone sushi and a small tossed salad.

Perfect for a quick lunch or dinner, Kozo’s bentos are the cure all when you want to devour Japanese cuisine that’s just as delicious as it is filling, all at the snap of a finger.

y 9 a.m. on any given morning, Eggs ’n Things is already swamped with a swarm of hungry diners from across the globe who can’t wait to dine in casual island elegance and dig into the array of premier breakfast options available at this renowned Waikiki establishment located on Saratoga Road.

“There’s usually an average wait of 40 minutes just to be seated,” says general manager Michael Skedeleski, “so, I would suggest customers come early.”

Yet, there’s a quick solution for those on-the-go with no time to waste. Eggs ’n Things recently opened a second location on Kalakaua Avenue, which Skedeleski affectionately calls Eggs ’n Things Waikiki Beach Eggspress.

“We sell the same great food, but the setEggspress Yourself ting is much more fast-paced here at Waikiki Beach Eggspress,” he states.

Being that we call it an “Eggspress,” we don’t have servers, so people can get their food and sit down, or we also can prepare the food to go and people can eat on the beach or in their hotel rooms. Decadent pupus for gigantic appetites

E

ating pupus at Sam Choy’s Breakfast Lunch & Crab is not for the faint of heart, or stomach. The portions are large enough to require capitalization. Therefore, PUPUS at Sam Choy’s BLC are a tasty and belly-busting combination of fresh, local ingredients and ample value. That makes sense.

Dining on decorative and dainty pupus while being surrounded by warm and rustic hues as soft indistinguishable music fills the audio void just doesn't make sense when sitting among the towering vessels of blondes, ales and lagers. These are PUPUS that get up early, put in a full days work and still have time for pau hana good times.

Another belly-rubbing option is Hukilau Pupu Platter ($25.95). The threepart seafood collaboration offers Fried Poke, Island Coconut Shrimp (which also is offered as a stand alone PUPU item for $12.95) and a pile of Calamari. Served with a wasabi cocktail, and a pineapple sweet and sour sauce, the mound of food 2

makes a great centerpiece. The shrimp are big and sweet, the calamari crispy and the poke retains the butteriness of raw poke with the texture change of fried fish.

If you prefer your poke prepared in a more traditional manner, Shoyu Ahi Poke ($14.95) is worth investigating. Tossed with green onion, shoyu and ogo, each plate is made to order so it arrives at the peak of freshness. Paired with a Big Aloha Blonde ($3.95 for a 10 ounce and $5.75 for 16 ounces), Ehu Ale, or anything that comes from the stainless steel vats, and you’re bound to leave happy.

Being one who is often a bit protective of what’s on my plate, The BLC Crabcakes ($12.95) is a tasty option that also is easy to defend from encroaching forks. Made with blue crab, coated with a crispy covering and served with a basil aioli, the crab is light, creamy and an unquestioned favorite among diners who have been making the Nimitz Highway restaurant a regular stop for 15 years.

urry King celebrates the opening of its second location at Chinese Cultural Plaza Feb. 22 with a dine-in special of free house miso soup and gyoza with each purchase.

“We make our curry on the spot, it’s not something we stock 1 overnight,” says manager/chef Shane Yang. “We make it fresh and it’s affordable.”

In addition to its traditional curry and ramen dishes, including udon and cold noodles, Curry King recently added two new menu items — Tofu Curry Salad ($5.95) and Hawaiian Fried Rice ($6.25).

“We introduced a tofu vegetarian dish a couple of months ago, and a lot of customers asked if I could make it with salad instead of rice,” explains Yang. “For people who are watching their diet, this is a healthier option with no starch.”

For Hawaiian Fried Rice, Yang uses two of the island’s most popular food items: pineapple and Spam. “A lot of tourists come to our Ward Warehouse location, and I wanted to offer something different — something that they can remember about their trip here, and Hawaii is about

A must-try is the signature Paitan Char-su Ramen ($7.88), which comes with a milkywhite pork-based soup that is cooked for 10 hours, Japanesestyle noodles that are on the firmer side, seaweed and a corn topping, a sprinkle of sesame seeds, one slice of shoyu pork, and an egg on top (with the white cooked and the yolk runny).

Yang, who has been in the restaurant business for nine years, says he plans to continue to introduce new items to his menu in the future. As for the curry, it’s a Japanese-style sauce that is on the sweeter side. Ramen dishes can be substituted with udon noodles, and brown rice can be substituted at no extra charge.

Located at Ward Warehouse, Curry King opened last September and is located near Dairy Queen.

hile the curtains at the historic Waikiki 3 Theater have remained closed since the iconic building ceased operations in 2002, the show goes on for fans of surf ’n turf.

Head down to the Kalakaua Avenue location today, and one may catch some of Waikiki’s freshest seafood and succulent beef at Atlantis Seafood & Steak.

As its name suggests, Atlantis is a hidden treasure nestled in the heart of Waikiki surrounded by numerous retail establishments that help make the trip into Waikiki worth the while. According to the restaurant’s executive general manager Steven Matsuno, “Waikiki is still Waikiki. It’s right in our front yard, and it’s an awesome place. Come check it out!”

“The garlic steak is one of our top sellers,” Bennett says. “It comes out on a sizzling platter and once we bring one out, everyone looks around. And usually tables sitting next to it end up ordering one too. It’s a great sharing steak, one whole pound, so two people can eat it. Or, if you’re adventurous, one person can go for it.”

Bennett also takes pride in Atlantis’ pasta dishes, which as one might expect, come chock-full of delectable seafood and other fresh ingredients. Ocean Seafood Pasta ($28.95) offers diners a mountain of premium pasta smothered in a rich basil tomato cream sauce and brimming with fresh island fish, Manila clams, tiger shrimp and leeks. Whole Maine Lobster Pasta ($49.95) reels in diners with a perfectly cooked

crustacean served over premium pasta with a creamy lemon butter sauce and fresh asparagus.

“Ocean Seafood Pasta has tons of shrimp, clams and mussels, and it’s also one of our best-sellers,” says Bennett.

In addition to its extensive menu, Atlantis also offers Early Bird Special items priced at $12.95 and are available for Kamaaina all day and night — the dishes are discounted for non-residents from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. The Early Bird dishes include Sautéed Mahi with Lobster Sauce, Steak and Shrimp, and Chicken Alfredo Pasta. Each entrée also comes with a choice of vegetable as well as either mashed potatoes or rice, and makes for a perfect combination of quality and value.

While Atlantis has established a loyal following with tourists, Matsuno hopes that Kamaaina will make the trip into Waikiki to enjoy the ambience and electricity emanating from a revitalized Kalakaua Avenue and, especially, some of the eatery’s surf ’n turf.

“For local people, if you haven’t come down to Waikiki in a while, a lot has changed,” Matsuno says.

“You can get a little bit of everything right here at Atlantis. While you can’t catch a movie here anymore, you can catch some excellent, fresh seafood and steak.”

uy Fieri would love this place.

Big City Diner has everything that makes a diner a diner: eggs, pancakes, French toast, burgers and fries, wings, salads, chili, ribs, happy hour, a late-night menu and lots of local faves.

But there’s something about this particular diner that elevates it above the norm: owner Lane Muraoka.

“We’re really healthconscious,” he says. “We were one of the first to put brown rice on the menu. If there’s a starch, you can have white or brown.” (He warns that there is a bit of furikake sprinkled on the rice, and that does contain fish, so remember to ask your server to leave it off.)

Of course, Muraoka’s healthy attitude goes

beyond rice. In fact, if you don’t eat meat or fish, you can order tofu as a substitute for meat in many dishes, such as the popular Paniolo Chicken Salad (Big $11.99, Not So Big $8.99). Or just ask and they’ll omit the meat, fish, egg or cheese from just about any dish.

If you’re a bit shy to ask, it’s no big deal. There’s plenty on the menu to please vegetarians.

For starters, Our Famous Soybeans Made With Hawaii Spice Sauce ($7.49) is a popular pick.

In fact, Muraoka says that there’s one customer who orders it for her dinner along with a glass of wine.

A

lthough Hinone Mizunone is the Hawaii progeny of a Japanese food chain, operations manager Eiki Tamaki doesn’t consider the restaurant’s cuisine to be standard Japanese fare.

Instead, he says it’s homestyle Japanese cooking — and that the King Street eatery is more of a mix of authentic Japanese food and local-style eats. The result is a tasty fusion-filled menu that attracts Japanese visitors and locals alike.

“It is comfort food, everyday food,” Tamaki explains.

Some customers, it seems, have taken Tamaki’s description of Hinone’s cuisine quite literally — a few regulars frequent the restaurant almost every day. And as of recently, the restaurant is now open seven days a week, so Hinone loyalists don’t have to dread Sundays anymore.

For diners on the go, Hinone’s bentos are a must-have. Bentos are available for pick-up Monday through Saturday.

Bentos with a variety of options, including Salmon, Tonkatsu, Butterfish, Chicken Katsu, Unagi and Hamburger, are made fresh each day. Prices vary, and the selection changes day-to-day. The bentos make a perfect to-go lunch, but you better hurry — Tamaki warns that bentos are often sold out by 1 p.m.

Each bento includes gobo, pickled 2 vegetables, egg and croquette.

One popular teishoku selection is Tempura ($13), which includes shrimp, squid and vegetable tempura. Other popular teishoku options are Butterfish Misoyaki ($14.75) and Chicken AmaKara Age ($11), which is crispy fried chicken with daikon and ginger sauce. All teishoku dishes are served with rice, miso soup, two side dishes and pickles. For lunch, teishoku meals include one main dish selection. For dinner, you can choose two main dishes — all for $17.75.

“The udon and the curry are also popular,” says Tamaki.

Udon dishes include Shrimp Tempura Udon ($8) and Kitsune Udon ($6.50).

Curry selections feature Karaage Curry ($8.50) and Chicken Katsu Curry ($9.50).

Tasty side dishes such as Japanese Style Omelette ($4.50) are a great addition to 3 any meal.

inone Mizunone is the first U.S.-based restaurant of Fujio Foods Systems — a prolific food chain that owns hundreds of restaurants and cafes in Japan.

The restaurant gets its name from the way it makes its famous rice.

It uses an an old-fashioned pot over fire.

“Hinone means ‘sound of water,’” Tamaki ito Server Hajime Sa explains. “And Mizunone means ‘sound of fire.’ We got this name because when you cook the rice in this old-fashioned pot, that’s what you hear — the fire and the water.”

Tamaki adds that they carefully watch each batch of rice to ensure that it’s cooked perfectly. The result is tasty, fluffy rice that has all the customers raving about it.

“We are known for our rice,” Tamaki says.

“You can taste the difference. It has a sweetness to it.”

The kind of careful attention that Hinone Mizunone gives to its rice is the same type of treatment that customers can expect. Servers are friendly and attentive. As diners walk in and out of the restaurant, Tamaki greets them warmly.

“I want to make them feel at home,” he says.

pon entering YuZu, customers will immediately notice the uniqueness of the Japanese eatery/bar. For starters, three subdivided sections make up the eatery, designed to provide different dining experiences for its customers.

Lotus Root Pizza ($8.95)

“Customers can drink at the bar, eat dishes made with fresh ingredients in the dining section or relax, drink sake and eat sushi at the sushi bar,” explains manager Tats Otake.

Besides the atmosphere, the concept behind creating YuZu is the eatery’s distinguishing factor. YuZu — a citrus fruit resembling a small grapefruit often found in East Asia — can be found in a variety of foods, seasonings and beverages. iSam Kubota, president and owner of YuZu, decided to open the eatery last November and features foods infused with the citrus flavor.

“He (Kubota) named the restaurant ‘YuZu’ because he wanted to make dishes using the citrus,” says Otake. “In our sushi, we use citrus vinegar instead of sushi vinegar, so you Temari Sampler can enjoy the ($14.95) taste of citrus. It’s quite different

from other sushi. It’s a light citrus taste; it’s not too strong.”

The YuZu menu comprises many unique dishes, including Lotus Root Pizza ($8.95) — a popular appetizer — and Zelda Choco Banana Crepe ($6.95), and Acai No Dairy Rare Cheesecake ($3.95), two of the most popular desserts.

“For the Lotus Root Pizza, we cut up the lotus root really thin, put five different cheeses on top and grill it,” says Otake.

“It looks like pizza, but it’s actually not; we don’t use bread. For our dessert, the Acai Cheesecake and the Green Tea Ice Cream with Sweet Bean ($4.95) have no dairy, so vegetarians can eat it.”

When it comes to YuZu’s signature dish, Otake names the unconventional Temari Sushi (two pieces per order).

The sushi earned its name from temari balls, explains Otake, which are made from leftover scraps of kimono fabric and used by Japanese school-children (“te” = hand; “mari” = ball).

“Although Temari Sushi has a ball shape instead of rectangular sushi, the size is about the same as the regular sushi,” Otake says. “A popular dish is Temari Sampler ($14.95) that comes with seven pieces of sushi —

Shrimp Tempura (10 pieces for $13.95) is a popular request at YuZu because of the quantity and price. Another YuZu classic is the Veggie Sampler ($14.95).

“The Veggie Sampler comes with seven pieces also — eggplant, carrot, eringi mushroom, tomato, shiitake mushroom, lotus root and yuba,” Otake says. “We try to make the vegetables look like fish … for example, tomato looks like tuna (in the sushi); the lotus root looks like eel.”

YuZu also offers Yakitori dishes and udon, of which the most popular are Kakiage (shrimp and gobo fritter) Udon ($10.95) and Spicy Sukiyaki

“It’s (the udon) freshly made and we cut the udon up after you order, so it’s very fresh,” Otake says.

YuZu provides different lunch and dinner specials every day; a different menu is provided for Late Night Specials (10 p.m.-1 a.m.). Customers can expect to pay an average of $25, including drinks. Popular cocktails include Guava Sake Martini ($8), YuZu Mojito ($10) — shiso, yuzu and ginger — and the Coco Ginger Splash ($10), a combination of lime, coconut water and ginger.

While the eatery is enjoying increased popularity, another YuZu location is coming soon.

“We are going to open a new restaurant in Ko Olina,” states owner iSam Kubota. “It’s going to be pretty similar to this (Ala Moana location). We should open in the summer.”
