H

appy Sunday, Ono readers! If you don’t know it yet, I’m a fiend for the spicy. Yes, my palate prefers intense levels of heat, and when it comes to my favorite cuisine, the hotter the better. I’ve even been known to carry a mini bottle of Tabasco sauce in my purse from time to time, and I can eat jalapenos like candy. OK, maybe that last one was a bit of a stretch, but I do love ’em!

Where to find more of the burn? Right here. This week, I’ve decided to up the ante and bring life to fire-breathing fare at the following Ono, You Know establishments. They are dynamite!

Red House in Honolulu My first stop this week was to the newly opened Red House in Honolulu.

Conveniently located on Keeaumoku Street, this trendy and modern establishment entered Hawaii’s dining scene this past December and serves up the finest in Korean cuisine. Yet, what’s more is Red House’s unique take on your traditional Korean favorites.

“We offer a blend of Korean and American fusion,” says owner Justin Chun. “For example, on our menu you’ll find an appetizer of Korean Noodle on Garlic Bread ($6) and Bulgogi Rice Pizza ($12).”

This time however, Chun turned up the heat and presented me with the ever-popular Red House Boneless Moa ($17.99 grand opening special, $24 regular price) and Jjolmen ($20, serves two people).

Now, if you’re asking yourself, what is

Boneless Moa? Let me tell you. It’s the most tasty mound of chicken wings you and your taste buds have ever experienced. Served family-style, these chicken wings are finger-lickin’ good, featuring 16 to 22 pieces of bite-sized crispy fried chicken glazed with a blend of spicy Korean kochi jun sauce and Korean honey. Finally, it’s topped off with bits of chopped garlic. Next, Jjolmen is a vegetarian’s premier choice, consisting of thick buckwheat noodles surrounded by an assortment of vegetables including bean sprouts, purple cabbage and mixed greens.

“If someone requests a spicy dish, this is what we definitely recommend because it’s mixed with kochi jun sauce (Korean chili paste), and we can make it hotter if asked,” Chun states.

So, step into Red House in Honolulu and let the dulcet tones of K-pop music accompany your choice of food. And if you dare, raise the temperature for your taste buds — super-spicy food is standard in Korean fare, so you know it has to be good!

Wailana Coffee House At all hours of the day or night, Wailana Coffee House is my top choice for local grinds, and here at this landmark eatery in the heart of Waikiki, spicy is the name of the game.

“We’re not known for our spicy foods,

but we do have a couple on the menu such as Steak and Spicy Shrimp ($13.25) and Hot and Spicy Chicken Wings ($11.50),” says general manager Kenton Tom. Hot and Spicy Chicken Wings is the spicier of the two, and spotlights seven delectable pieces of marinated chicken seasoned with just the right amount of cayenne and white pepper. Served with a side of carrots and french fries, this meal isn’t for the faint of heart. You’ll notice a bit of a kick with the first few bites, but – See page 10

S

hore Bird Restaurant & Beach Bar takes flight as one of the most happening spots in Waikiki.

Located along the shore in Outrigger Reef Hotel, this top-notch restaurant known for its famous beachside barbecue serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily to locals and tourists alike. In fact, A-list celebrities such as Sandra Bullock, Justin Bieber, Nicolas Cage and Adam Sandler have been spotted enjoying a meal here.

Shore Bird opened its doors in June 1979, and ever since then, this awardwinning establishment has stolen the hearts and appetites of many loyal patrons in search of fantastic food and drinks within a vibrant and energetic atmosphere.

“Shore Bird offers a nice, beautiful outdoor dining experience,” says vice president and general manager David Nagaishi, noting that the restaurant has served more than 6 million diners over a span of five decades. “Shore Bird always has a fun vibe to it and the dining room resembles a patio

area as if you’re outside of Aunty’s house,” he adds.

Pay a visit to Shore Bird on any given day and it’s bustling with hungry diners whose lively conversations and laughter go hand in hand with the upbeat music permeating throughout the open-air restaurant. The all-youcan-eat breakfast buffet begins at 7 a.m., and priced at $13.95 per person it features a multitude of breakfast favorites including honey glazed ham, roast turkey, scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, hash browns, fresh fruits, sweet

juices and more.

“What’s special about our breakfast buffet is the assortment of pastries,” Nagaishi explains. “We have our own bakery where we make all of our pastries right on property, be it cinnamon rolls, sticky buns, bear claws and assorted Danishes.”

While taking in the exquisite earlymorning views of Diamond Head, sip on a mimosa from the bar and let time slip into oblivion. Before you know it, the lunch crowd starts shuffling in around 11 a.m. eager to bite into a premium Angus Shore Burger ($10.95).

“Our burgers are made with all of the trimmings from our steaks, including ribeye, sirloin and New York strip loin, and we grind those trimmings together,” says kitchen manager Brenda Roberts. “We also hand-press our burgers, and the Shore Bird logo is stamped onto all of our Hawaiian sweet bread buns.”

All burgers are served with your choice of sea salt seasoned fries, Mauistyle potato chips or a side of fresh

grapes (when available). You also may substitute organic mixed greens for an additional $2.50. According to Roberts, many patrons gravitate toward other items on Shore Bird’s Lunch Lanai Menu as well, whether it be Chicken Cobb Salad ($12.95), Cajun Ahi Wrap ($12.95) or a refreshing Pineapple and Papaya Salad with Cottage Cheese ($12.95). An all-you-can-eat lunch buffet also is available from noon to 3 p.m.

“Here at Shore Bird, you can either go healthy or you can splurge,” says Nagaishi with a smile. And if you’re going to splurge, why not go all out and feast your appetite on the eatery’s ever-popular “Thrill of the Grill” dinner theme complete with an all-youcan-eat salad bar. The grills are filled nightly with people from across the globe who dare to be their own chefs, grilling up beautiful renditions of hand-carved premium Angus steaks, which range from top sirloin to New York steak and rib eye.

“People love it (Thrill of the Grill),” Nagaishi exclaims. “I mean, where can

you go to barbecue on a 20-foot grill and not have to clean up? Your entree is served raw on a platter, and you go to our barbecue grill and you can cook it yourself, but there’s a chef there to guide you.”

Once your entree is cooked to your liking, top it off with an assortment of seasonings, which take your entree to the next level. Choose from salt and pepper, garlic salt, barbecue seasoning, seasoned salt, Montreal Steak seasoning, lemon pepper and roasted garlic seasoning, to name a few. For a cost of $2.50, add a side of Shore Bird’s homemade cave-aged Bleu Cheese Butter to your meal.

“The grill gets hotter than 600 degrees,” Roberts explains. “Threefourth pound Rib Eye Steak ($29.95) is a highly requested cut, and people like to pair it with Montreal Steak seasoning.”

“We have an extensive menu consisting of pork chops, ribs, lobster, fresh fish, shrimp kabobs, ahi kabobs and more,” Nagaishi adds. “Teriyaki Ahi Kabob ($24.95) and Half Pound

Teriyaki Beef Kabob ($22.95) seem to be favorites among our customers.”

Dinner is served until 10 p.m. nightly, and then Shore Bird’s late-night specials take center stage until midnight, featuring Premium Angus Sliders with fries ($8.95), Chicago Style Hot Dog with fries ($8.95), Mahi Sliders with fries ($9.95), Jumbo Soft Pretzels ($6.95) and Premium Angus Shore Burger with fries ($9.95).

“Free sing-along karaoke begins every night at 9:30 until closing. On the weekends and in the evenings, we have a great local following because they love to karaoke,” Nagaishi says.

A lot of patrons also take advantage of the restaurant’s nightly Happy Hour from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. featuring $3.50 all draft beers, $4.50 mai tais, house wines and standard cocktails.

(Happy Hour also runs from noon to 5 p.m. daily).

“Once you visit Shore Bird you’ll always come back because it’s so much fun,” Nagaishi states. “This is the place to be for your favorite American cuisine with local flair!”

umphai Denson brings years of experience in the local Thai cooking scene as owner and chef of Thai Town Cafe. In addition, Denson also has extensive culinary experience that extends to her youth in Thailand.

“My mom was a food vendor in Thailand,” Denson says. It was there that Denson began to learn to cook, and she aims to bring traditional, authentic Thai food to the table at her new restaurant.

Denson continued to cultivate her talent while working at a number of local Thai restaurants throughout the years. But she always wanted to have a restaurant of her own.

“It was my dream, actually,” Denson says. “It's my dream from a long time ago. Finally, my dream has come true.”

oodies who can’t get enough Thai food will be happy to know that there is a new Thai restaurant in town. Thai Town Cafe, which recently opened in Kalihi, serves up tasty Thai cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. The venue has the feel of a comfortable corner diner.

On one recent weekday, a couple of families leisurely enjoyed a meal together while a few workers from the area stopped by to grab a bite.

Owner and chef Lumphai Denson describes Thai Town Cafe’s cuisine as traditional Thai food, featuring a wide array of appetizers, curries, soups and salads, and noodle dishes.

Popular dishes include Tom Yum ($7.50) with a choice of beef, pork, chicken or tofu with vegetables, and Chicken & Garlic Rice (Kao Man Gai) ($8.50).

The restaurant offers many Thai favorites, such as Pad Thai and Cashew Nut StirFry. Both are priced at $7.50 with beef, pork, chicken or tofu, or $8.50 with seafood shrimp or calamari. In addition to these dishes, Denson says that Thai Town Cafe is striving to go beyond the basics to offer a number of more unique creations. One example of such offerings is Shushi Pla (fish), a deepfried fish with special sweet chili sauce ($8.75 for a fillet, or $22 for a whole fish as pictured).

As Dining Out recently discovered, though, there’s something special about Saigon Cuisine, located on the corner of Liliha Street and Vineyard Boulevard.

“They’re so friendly here and the food is good,” says regular Kimberly Makahashi. “It’s close to home and affordable, so it had everything I look for.”

Manager Jennifer Tran attributes the delightful Vietnamese spot’s growing success to its unique, meatfilled eats. Oxtail Pho ($9.75), for example, is a new take on oxtail soup.

“We cook it a long time.

It’s a pho technique, but

we put different ingredients inside,” describes Chan.

The richly flavored oxtail broth is sensational with pho noodles, mushroom, onion, cabbage, parsley and cilantro.

Perfectly charred grilled meats are perhaps the oneyear-old eatery’s biggest draw. Vermicelli Noodles with Sliced Sirloin Pork and Spring Rolls ($7.99) features sizzling pork atop noodles, fresh vegetables, roasted peanuts, pickled daikon and house special fish sauce.

Ert’s Grill, childhood friends and co-owners Stephen Ichioka and Clyde Higa don’t skimp on the skillful preparation of their localstyle creations.

The friendly spot has only been open for eight months, but the Wahiawa boys have had a lifetime of practice in the kitchen. “I’ve always liked to cook, I cook for my family. I learned from my mom and ran with it from there,” says Ichioka.

There’s no doubt about it as soon as you taste Pulehu Chicken Plate ($7.50), full of boneless, skinless chicken thigh goodness. “What makes it taste good is that it’s on the grill for the whole time,” says

Ichioka. “It’s very lightly seasoned, so the smokiness from the grill, that barbecue flavor, comes out.”

Deep, smoky flavors also enliven Ert’s Smoked Meat and Eggs ($7.50) breakfast plate. Flavorful pork is marinated overnight, then smoked in house for five-and-a-half hours, resulting in a rich, woodsy flavor with a teriyaki flair. “We had comments that (people) thought we bring it in from the Big Island, ’cuz Big Island’s known for its smoked meat,” says Higa.

Customers can choose among Kobe Set A ($34.95) — supreme tasting Kobe Style Beef Washugyu and prawn shrimp combination set — and Kobe Set B ($34.95), a supreme tasting Kobe Style Beef Washugyu set (large portion available for an additional $9).

The Kobe (Washugyu) Beef Sukiyaki Set ($38.95) and the Beef Sukiyaki Set ($14.95 lunch, $18.95 dinner) also are popular.

Besides the addition of sukiyaki to the menu, a larger selection

of sake and wine also has been added. The sake and wine selection available to customers include Plum Wine ($4), Crane Lake Wine ($4.50), Sho Chiku Bai ($5.75), Fuji Apple Sake ($15.95), Okunomatsu Ginjo ($16.95) and Okunomatsu Junmai ($16.95). Shabu Shabu House now offers Iced Coffee ($3.50) as well.

Although Shabu Shabu House recently added more to its menu, further menu changes may debut this summer, according to Murata.

“She’s (Makita) looking to add more things to the menu and thinking of working on a takeout menu because the location of the restaurant is by business buildings and offices,” Murata says.
