And while nothing can beat the combination of savory chocolate and mac nuts, this week I had to expand my horizons and take on a taste for other magnificent macadamia nut creations. nuts, Chef prepared a delectable salad and entree showcasing this beloved nut. First came Shor’s very own Arugula Salad ($12), prepared with local arugula and baby bell peppers from ’Nalo Farms, carrots, locally grown tomatoes and fresh pear dressed with a zesty mango vinaigrette, and topped with crumbled bleu cheese and roasted macadamia nuts, of course. “This is a very fresh salad and macadamia nuts are just ideal for it,” Ullrich says. “Nothing has the perfect crunch like a macadamia nut has. It gives a really cool experience in your mouth — nothing beats a macadamia nut!” According to Ullrich, fresh macadamia nuts are brought in from the Big Island once a week, which is wonderful considering Mongchong Fish and Kauai Shrimp ($38) requires an essence of macadamia nuts to give it that pizzazz. This dinner entree consists of monchong and Kauai shrimp nestled on a bed of rice pilaf, served with a light lemon beurre blanc and macadamia nut pesto sauce. “Traditional Italian pesto is done with pine nuts, but we twisted it up some and prepared ours with macadamia nuts instead,” he explains. “The mac nuts are slightly roasted with some oil and seasoned with a bit of salt. It goes amazingly well with fish — it’s sweeter and has more crunch!” Shor American Seafood Grill Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa Diamond Head Tower, Third Floor 2424 Kalakaua Ave. 237.6145

doriko Japanese Restaurant opens up a world of possibilities. Located in King’s Village Shopping Center in the heart of Waikiki, this eatery — which was founded nearly 40 years ago — has become a gathering place for kamaaina and visitors alike, who wish to experience the authenticity of izakaya dining amid a traditional Japanese-style atmosphere. Dining Out recently paid a visit to this renowned restaurant and met with general manager Hiro Takei, who explained that the act of socializing over a delicious meal and soothing drink is just as important as the quality of cuisine.
2
DO: As one of Waikiki’s longest-standing Japanese restaurants serving only the best in authentic cuisine, this year, Odoriko celebrates 40 years of premier service. How did the restaurant come to be? Takei: When Odoriko first opened in 1972, we had a great connection with the local community, then the Japanese economic boom soon followed. Now, 40 years later, we continue to have the support of the local community, who we appreciate. However, 75 percent of our business is devoted to the Japanese visitor market. Odoriko is a family business founded by my parents Nobuteru and Akiko Takei. It’s actually the sister restaurant to their first restaurant, Maiko, which was originally located in the Ilikai Hotel. Currently all of our energy is focused on Odoriko. I took over as general manager in 2010.
DO: What is the concept of Odoriko? What can newcomers expect when they dine here?

Takei: What stands out about Odoriko is our dedication to providing our customers with the most authentic Japanese experience that we are able to provide — and that, of course, begins with authenticity of taste, service, ambiance and décor. Odoriko is an Izakaya-style restaurant, so we serve mostly smaller dishes that go along with drink. The environment here is really buzzing. We encourage loud laughter and the servers are taught to always display a high amount of energy. However, we’re a lot more comprehensive than the traditional izakaya-style restaurant because we offer set dinners, hot pot and a full sushi bar as well. Our restaurant is very family-friendly. We’re always mindful of presentation, but we’re not fine dining — our intent is to provide comfort food. We have a various assortment of Japanese beers and a large collection of Japanese sake as well. Sake pairs very well with sushi, sashimi and raw dishes, and we use topgrade sashimi here. Our tuna is purchased locally, often directly from the fish market. Everything is as fresh as it can be.
DO: At a quick glance the impressive menu selection is already quite apparent. What are Odoriko patrons’ top picks? Takei: For family-oriented customers, the favorites are the set meals such as the Odoriko Set, which comes with crab, lobster and steak. Our hot pot entrees also are very filling. Yet, typically our most popular items are our fresh sushi and sashimi, and our tapas-style dishes, including kalbi, poke, grilled squid, chicken skewers and fried chicken. Odoriko offers lunch specials from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and patrons love the Odoriko Special

The King Set also is available on the kamaaina menu and is served with ftwo pieces of sushi (shrimp and squid), three pieces of California Roll, sashimi, shrimp and vegetable tempurra, edamame, sweet egg omelette, fruit, miso soup and rice. The Spicy Tuna and Salmon Combination Don is found on our regular menu, and consists of spicy tuna fand spicy salmon served over rice. It’s very tasty, and kamaaina also receive 10 percent off.
options, Odoriko also features Chanko Nabe ($16.50), Shabu Shabu ($16.50) and Sukiyaki ($16.50). All come with a bowl of rice. Our standout hot pot item is Ikenabe ($45, minimum of two orders required), which features live Maine lobster and a bit of everything else — chicken, oysters, shrimp, clams, an assortment of vegetables and more. The lobster is still alive when it’s presented to you and it cooks right in front of you at your table! The broth that comes with this hot pot is amazing — it’s a shoyu-based broth.
DO: Odoriko is bustling with diners come dinnertime. What are popular dinner options? Takei: We’re very busy during dinner, and popular dinner entrees are Kaisenmori ($45), a seafood sampler, which consists of half a steamed lobster, poke, cocktail shrimp, edamame, oysters and sashimi, to name a few. Kaisenmori is perfect for the indecisive diner. Then, Matsu Sushi ($36) is our most popular nigiri assortment, featuring 11 different types of seafood such as tuna, salmon, ikura, sea urchin, mackerel, shrimp — all fresh.
DO: Are there some exciting plans in the works that Odoriko patrons can look forward to? Takei: Yes, starting next month we’re going to be promoting our Odoriko rewards card. For every dollar you spend, you get one point, and when you reach a certain amount of points you receive a discount off of your bill. Also, a plan for Happy Hour is in the works and we intend that Happy Hour will start in the next couple of months.
DO: Many customers are huge fans of the restaurant’s various of hot pot options. What are some of your hot pot recommendations? Takei: Our Nabemono, or hot-pot dishes, are offered for lunch and dinner, and some favorite options include Shabu Shabu ($35 per order), Sukiyaki ($35 per order), Chanko-nabe ($38 per order) and Live Lobster-nabe ($45 per order). A minimum of two orders is required and come complete with an appetizer, pickled vegetables, miso soup and rice. For quick nabemono lunch
DO: Odoriko has reached a 40 year landmark this year. What do you attribute to the establishment's success? Takei: The 40th anniversary of Odoriko really crept up on us — time really flies. Our family is just so grateful that we were able to do business here for this long. Our success is thanks to our customers, and we just hope that we can thank our regular customers through our promotions and by offering a rewards card. Also, we hope to bring in more of our local friends to dine here and experience what we have to offer.

Seafood Village Serves Up the Best Lunchtime Deal In Town
O
n one recent evening at Seafood Village Chinese Cuisine, general manager Johnson Ma was visited by a couple who used to dine at the restaurant many years ago. Although they used to frequent the eatery, this particular visit was the first time they had been in a while, and they were delighted to see that their old haunt was still around. And Ma was just as happy to see them, too. “I always like to see customers come back,” he says. “We just really want to take care of people. We want you to have a good time.” Located downstairs in Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort & Spa, Seafood Village has been drawing in customers — visitors and locals alike — for nearly 20 years with its traditional Hong Kongstyle cuisine. “What makes Chinese food great is that it’s best to it eat family style, and is good for celebrations with friends and family,” Ma says. “And Seafood Village is a great place to gather … It’s the best place to celebrate anything. We’ve had baby showers, retirement parties, graduations and anniversaries. “And the star of all of these (events) has been our $10.95 lunch,” Ma adds. The meal is $10.95 per person and is for parties of 10 or more. It includes Minute Chicken Fried Noodle, Stir-Fried Assorted Vegetables, Kalua Short Ribs, Beef and Broccoli, Chicken Salad and four types of the restaurant’s most popular dim sum:

host up to 80 guests. For larger parties, the entire restaurant — which holds up to 210 guests — also can be rented out. The lunch special and dim sum are the most popular for lunch hours, but the nighttime dining at Seafood Village certainly should not be overlooked. And if you’re going to dine at a place called Seafood Village, you’d better be sure to try a few of the items for which the restaurant is named. “We like to feature the freshest in seafood,” Ma says. All of the lobster, crab, prawn and fish dishes are among the most popular. Some of these include Tea Leaves Smoked Jumbo Kahuku Prawns ($23.95), which is made with black tea leaves smoked into the shrimp, and Honey Glazed Walnut Kahuku Prawns ($22.95). And now, the same great flavors that have been pleasing customers for years recently got a fresh, contemporary revamp. Award-winning Chef Michael Au visited Seafood Village last month. For two weeks, he collaborated with the restaurant’s kitchen staff to reinvent some of their classic flavors, while also coming

We try to give a taste of Hong Kong right here in Waikiki,” Seafood Village general manager Johnson Ma says, General Manager explaining that the restaurant serves up Johnson Ma traditional Hong Kong-style food. The with Beef restaurant’s dim sum options have and Broccoli always been one thing that keeps customers coming back. Seafood Village strives to maintain a high level of authenticity when it comes to its dim sum. “If you went to Hong Kong for dim sum, you actually wouldn’t see too many places still using a cart,” he explains. And as authentic Hong Kongstyle eatery, Seafood Village adheres to that standard as well. “When you order it, that is when we start to make it. In China, that is how they want it. They want it fresh, piping hot, right out of the steamer, so that is how we serve it.” Ma explains the Chinese characters for dim sum mean “touch of the heart.” “It’s a staple for daytime,” he says, “kind of like a Chinese sandwich.” But nighttime diners need not worry. Ma assures that the restaurant also offers some dim sum at night. In addition to the dim sum delights that are featured in the $10.95 lunch special, another customer favorite is Xiao Long Bao (six pieces for $8.99). It’s a broth-filled dumpling dipped in vinegar. And the made-to-order format is status quo for Seafood Village’s entire menu, not just its dim sum. “Our food is always made fresh,” Ma says. And in large part thanks to Ma, no matter how many times regulars frequent Seafood Village, they always will have something to look forward to. Ma is constantly working to tweak and improve the restaurant’s dishes. “Every day, I try to create a new dish. I work with the chef, and together, we create a lot,” he says.
up with some new concoctions. “They came up with a variety of new, unique dishes,” Ma says. New dishes include Golden Pumpkin Egg Tofu. And older dishes such as Hot and Sour Seafood Soup ($5.50) are back with a kick. “Chef gave us some good ways to really season the food, and make it even more flavorful … He looked at all of our dishes, and just how to make the flavor really jump.” With new dishes, new twists on classic dishes and some of the best deals in town, there’s never been a better time to check out Seafood Village. On top of all of that, a large part of the restaurant’s charm is its unwavering desire to serve its customers. Perhaps that notion is best exemplified the night that the couple of former regulars visited. Before they left, they told Ma how pleasantly surprised they were that Seafood Village was still around. Things in Waikiki, after all, are always changing. “Yes,” Ma responded to the couple. “We always are here for you.“ Contact Christina O’Connor at diningout@staradvertiser.com

nytime Cafe is doing its homework when it comes to pasta sauce. It is now using the Italian authentic and produced La Rustichella white truffle pate in a few of its dishes, including the new Trio Shrimp Spaghettini with white truffle sauce, priced at $15.95. This dish’s foundation is in the sauce and it cannot be missed. The creamy truffle sauce blended with La Rustichella delicately brings out a fantastic flavor with each bite, and it doesn’t leave you lumbering toward the door on your way out. “When we start cooking this one, customers can smell it from the kitchen, it smells delicious. I like tomato sauce usually more then white, but this is so good, I really love it,” says Anytime Cafe owner Cindy Wong. As a classic Tuscan tradition, the white truffle pate is made from fresh white truffles, extra virgin olive oil and a touch of salt. Served with spaghettini pasta, you also will find three types of scrumptious shrimp — bay shrimp, tiger shrimp and large crab meat stuffed shrimp — in Trio Shrimp Spaghettini. With La Rustichella being so expensive, the white truffle sauce is available on a first-comefirst-served basis. Other options on Anytime Cafe's specials menu that have become popular are Cheese Ravioli and Chicken Piccata, both priced at $12.95. Though you may get strange looks if dining alone, there is nothing wrong with tackling the House Special Appetizer Platter ($25.99) all by yourself. That being said, you will have more room for other dishes if you share, but that’s up to you. The platter is a weighty helping of egg rolls (done with an interesting curry-style spice), cold jellyfish, salt and pepper pork chops, roast duck and char siu pork. You won’t find the platter on the regular menu, but ask for it. If you’re looking for something lighter, Boiled Shrimp ($11.99) will do the trick. The sweet shrimp is boiled, chilled and served head on with a house special soy sauce containing pepper, ginger and green onion. Other tasty items are DeepFried Tofu ($8.99) or Stuffed Tofu with Shrimp ($9.99) The deep-fried tofu is a crispy snack perfect for noshing while sipping an ice cold beer. Stuffed with shrimp, it is a moist and fluffy treat with a clean flavor that does not carry over to the next item. And the next item could be Clams with Wine Sauce ($12.99). If you didn’t share the appetizer platter, you can mend fences with the steamed clams that are chilled and topped with a Chinese white wine sauce containing parsley, red pepper, onion and green bell peppers. One final recommendation is Fried Sliced Squid ($11.99). The squid is moist, tender and packed with a clean, natural flavor. A garnish of green onion and red peppers add just the right subtle accompaniment to the dish.

The Waikiki mainstay has been serving up American classics as well as local favorites at the corner of Ala Moana Boulevard and Ena Road since 1969. Design Center, the restaurant offers AsianAmerican cuisine, and is currently undergoing some changes to its menu. Starting sometime next week, Stage Restaurant will offer its very own Surf & Turf ($40), which will feature Big Island lobster tail and grilled beef tenderloin, seasoned with Hamakua mushrooms, asparagus and a lobster cream sauce. Executive Chef Ron de Guzman has high hopes for Stage’s new Surf & Turf because “seafood and beef dishes are pretty popular among customers. “I think customers will love it also because of the local mushrooms, and the Kona lobster is really tasty,” he says. Just because de Guzman is revamping the menu doesn’t mean everything must go. Stage Restaurant’s popular Ahi Poke ($13 dinner and $9 lunch) will remain on the

s Happy Day Chinese Seafood Restaurant approaches its 11th anniversary in August, owner Lisa Lum still finds delight at the sight of satisfied customers enjoying a great meal.
And, judging by the bustling restaurant where dim sum carts whirl around the room and a frenzied kitchen buzzes with excitement, loyal diners continue to bring their appetites and leave with smiles on their faces. “The food is good, and people leave smiling — they always come back,” she says. “They’re so nice, they’re like family. They feel very comfortable when they come here.” Lum and co-owner Yung Sang Chan have been in the business locally for more than three decades, and the pair also runs Nice Day Chinese Seafood Restaurant in Liliha. The duo started and operated the old Sea Fortune restaurant in Chinatown for 22 years, and after it closed, they opened Happy Day in 2001. “We get old customers coming to this location now, as well as new customers,” says Lum of her loyal diners. “The people are so nice, from the aunties to the grandparents, they come over and over again.” Located in Kaimuki at the corner of Waialae and 11th avenues, Happy Day offers a host of Hong Kong-style Chinese cuisine in a relaxed, family-style setting. The restaurant is arranged as an open dining hall, and is decorated with bright-red lanterns, large chandeliers and the

Assorted Dim Sum iconic fish tank that greets customers at the front door. Happy Day is synonymous with stellar dim sum selections, with most offerings starting at $2.68 for three pieces, including pork hash, taro, baked manapua, shrimp with spinach, beef balls and sesame seed balls — a popular dessert treat, especially during Chinese New Year. After choosing from selections on the dim sum cart, order up an entrée or two to share, including Seabass with Ginger and Onion ($11.95), Orange Chicken ($9.95) or Capital Style Pork Chops ($9.95). The crispy yet juicy pork is smothered in onions and covered with a tangy barbecue-style sauce that tantalizes the tastebuds. House Noodle ($9.95) is another longtime customer favorite, as the bed of cake noodle is topped with seafood, chicken, pork and vegetables then bathed in an oyster sauce that brings all the flavors together. Similarly, the Bah Chun Style Tofu Casserole ($12.95) incorporates large pieces of tofu, seafood, char siu, chicken and vegetables. Happy Day is home to a host of regular customers stopping in for a quick lunch, birthday celebration or family get together. The eatery is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., making it the ideal location for a great meal anytime the mood strikes. Happy Day offers popular daily specials, including the Lunch Special ($8.95), which comes with chicken salad, gon lo mein and five assorted dim sum selections. A dim sum carry-out special also is available daily from 8 to 11:30 a.m. when customers receive 15 percent off orders when paying with cash, and 10 percent off with credit card transactions. “Every time you’re hungry, you can come and enjoy!” says Lum.

patrons who keep coming back for more. I’ve been a fan of Eggs ’n Things for a while now, and just when I thought things couldn’t get any better, they do! The grinds here are always ridiculously onolicious, but you haven’t seen nothing until you’ve set your taste buds on Eggs ’n Things Mac Nut Lovers Pancakes ($12.95) You’ll savor the taste of macadamia nuts with each and every bite, as this perfect pancake creation is a macadamia nut fanatic’s dream come true. “This dish isn’t always on the menu, but we’ll be running it as a special July 14 and 15,” says general manager Edwin Ohta. Mac Nut Lovers Paradise features macadamia buttermilk pancakes topped with a homemade macadamia nut whipped cream and then sprinkled with a generous amount of … you guessed it … more macadamia nuts! 1 4 | D I N I N G O U T | J U LY 8 - 1 4 , 2 0 1 2
“It’s an overkill of mac nuts, but people love it,” Ohta says with a laugh. “You have macadamia nuts in your pancakes, on top of your pancakes and in the whipped cream. We use 100 percent macadamia nut paste to combine with the whipped cream. “Mac Nut Lovers Pancakes is unique to us here at Eggs ’n Things,” he adds, attributing the creation of this dish to general manager Michael Skedeleski. “He envisions what will go well together.” Well, after the first bite it’s a fact that pancakes, homemade whipped cream and a mound of macadamia nuts are a match made in heaven. Seriously, these have got to be my favorite pancakes ever! And the whipped cream? Don’t even get me started on that. I could eat mountains of it solely on my own!
3660 on the Rise
Raising the bar on Pacific Fusion cuisine is 3660 on the Rise. Located at 3660 Waialae Ave. on the corner of Waialae and Wilhelmina Rise, the restaurant opened its doors in September 1992 by partners chef Russell Siu and Gale Ogawa. Since then, this award-winning restaurant continues to stand in a league all its own, thanks to its superlative edible masterpieces and divine customer service. 3660 on the Rise serves dinner nightly Tuesday through Sunday, closed on Mondays, and diners find the restaurant’s signature dish, Ahi Katsu to be exemplary. New York Steak Alaea also is a top pick, but since it’s all about the magnificent macadamia nut this week, it’s time to shine the spotlight on 3660’s own Roast Rack of Macadamia Nut Crusted Lamb. Priced at $36, this flawless dish features Eggs ’n Things a superb rack of lamb grilled to perfec343 Saratoga Road tion, and crusted with a blend of Dijon 923.3447 mustard, panko and macadamia nuts. accompanied by a Cabernet Mint Sauce that is made in house, and served with a side of mashed potatoes and steamed asparagus. “Roast Rack of Macadamia Nut Crusted Lamb is one of our most popular dishes and has been on the menu for a long time,” says 3660 banquet chef Tony Laihipp. “It has a really, really nice subtle flavor. The macadamia nuts give the lamb a nice sweetness and the crust adds a nice crunch as well.” And if there’s a special occasion approaching, 3660 on the Rise has four private dining rooms accommodating groups from 20 to 200 people. Special banquet menus also are available for private parties, offering the same outstanding cuisine.

t would be pretty hard not to spot a Korean restaurant on “Koreamoku” Street, as it’s a mecca for the popular cuisine.
I Red House WHERE 835 Keeaumoku St., Honolulu CALL 944.0088 HOURS Open Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-midnight
But once you step into Red House, you know you’re going to have a unique dining experience — Korean fusion food and a hip, youthful ambience, with entertaining K-Pop videos playing continuously in a modern, red-and-white decor. And while you can find traditional Korean fare here, like bibimbap, the fusion dishes, such as the interestingly named “Bulgogi Rice Pizza,” are drawing a crowd. Of course, bulgogi (marinated barbecue meat) won’t rock your world if you don’t eat meat or fish, but how does Korean Style Spicy Soba ($10.99 lunch only) sound? For the noodle lover who likes just a light touch of heat, this lunch special will sing. The noodles are topped with a special sauce, lemon slices, spring mix and seaweed. According to owner Justin Chun, it’s new to the menu, and was created to satisfy the local palate by turning down the heat a bit. So although it may not be as fiery as Red House’s Jjolmen, it’s spicy and full of flavor. “It’s a little bit sweet,” Chun explains, “and we add mild kim chee juice.” Mmmm. A bowl of soba — a little hot, a little sweet — sounds like the perfect dish to enjoy while rockin’ out to K-Pop.

Dear Hearts, Life is full of messed up stuff; Some things you cannot control. The only thing you can control is the way you react to a crappy situation. So before you fly off the handle, Allow some time for contemplation. Filling your mind with frustration, Leaves no room for elation.

“It was limited at the beginning but we just did renovations — we made our kitchen bigger so now we do salads, entrées and waffles. We’re also doing appetizer specials on Fridays and Saturdays.” While Yogurstory is busiest during the weekends for brunch, the eatery is hoping to attract more customers for dinner. Salads, as well as “Breakfast at Night” dishes — including the popular Classic Eggs Benedict ($10.95) — are available for dinner, and entertainment is featured on Fridays from 9 to 11 p.m. “We have three different singers who rotate,” confirms Dalan. “They roam around the restaurant with a wireless mic every Friday during dinnertime.
