Why I Love My Credit Union Our credit union is simply the best! They started as Aloha Airlines Federal Credit Union, but now we know them as ‘our Aloha.’

When we first arrived to the islands in 1999, we did what most newcomers would do: We opened accounts with the biggest bank in town.

But after learning from co-workers the benefits of joining a credit union, we jumped from that big bank to Aloha Federal.

And what a great decision that was!

With not a lot of money, and the cost of living in Hawaii so high, we depended on our credit union to help smooth

what would sometimes be our “rough financial edges.” When we encountered unexpected issues with our accounts, someone at the credit union would call us to help us understand and fix things. Credit unions continue to support LifeSmarts Four Hawaii credit unions supported Oahu and neighbor island schools in the LifeSmarts State Championship.

Free tax help from credit unions benefit low income consumers Each year, the need for free tax assistance grows for those who most can benefit from Earned Income Tax Relief Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC).

These refunds help qualified taxpayers ease the burdens placed on them by the challenging economy.

A small, effective group of committed credit unions from Hawaii Island, Kauai, Maui, and Oahu have taken up the call to provide Volunteer Income

Tax Assistance (VITA) sites to members and non-members in the community.

Hawaii Alliance for CommunityBased Economic Development (HACBED) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) have partnered with Hawaii credit unions to train, certify, and equip credit union managers and staff to support preparation and filing of these tax returns.

Credit unions and the Kids Savings Project were featured in the 2012 Hawaii Family F i n a n c i a l E m p o w e r m e n t Symposium on June 27 – 29 at the Waikiki Beach Marriott on Oahu. The event was an opportunity for participants to learn how to empower families and communities to be selfsufficient. The event was sponsored by the H aw a i i I sla nd Hoowaiwai Network, whose mission it is to empower families and communities in wealth and asset building, and the Hawaii Alliance for Community-Based

Economic Development [HACBED].

In 2010 this symposium launched the Kids Savings Project across Hawaii Island. This year’s symposium featured Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi who focused his remarks on the Kids Savings Project which has expanded to 22 schools on Hawaii I sla nd.

Hawa ii Community FCU Youth Coordinator Kenneth Shaw also spoke about the credit union’s involvement in the Kids Savings Project.

Hawaii County Resource Center has embraced the Kids Savings Project created

says League Member Relations Manager Kathy Morris. “Often tax preparation companies will charge high fees and push refund anticipation loans to unsuspecting consumers at outrageous rates.”

Morris notes the efforts of eight participating credit unions during this year’s tax season generated over $1.8 million dollars in returns, of which over $660,000 were in EITC claims alone. Other federal tax credits resulted

in an additional $1 million dollars placed back into the hands of those who need it the most.

The most poignant was third grader Sean Kobayashi, who said he has saved over $700 but could have saved more had he not spent so much, which drew a collective laugh from the audience. Sean’s innocent comment made it obvious the concept of financial sustainability has been learned.
