Why 186 Million People Worldwide Choose Credit Unions
O
On October 21, credit union members worldwide will join together to celebrate International Credit Union Day and this year’s theme: Local. Trusted. Serving you. Do you remember why you chose your credit union as your financial services provider? It may be among many reasons shared by the 186 million people in 97 countries who have also chosen credit unions, but it most likely has something to do with the common philosophy of people helping people. Unlike other financial institutions, credit unions are not-forprofit, democratically controlled, volunteer-run, memberowned cooperatives. Credit unions exist to serve their members, and that level of service
remains high even during even the toughest times. Instead of issuing stock or paying dividends to outside shareholders, credit unions provide value to their members by returning earnings in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest on deposits, and lower or even no transaction fees. This year’s theme celebrates the advantages of credit union membership. Value, trust and service are just some of the many benefits of credit union membership. You are in charge of your money and your credit union. Hawaii’s credit unions are proud of our heritage as cooperative financial service providers and our connection to the more than 54,000 credit unions world-

redit union membership makes sense in a time when people are looking for the best value for their money. Members can save a substantial amount of money by using the products and services provided by their not-for-profit credit union. The per-member and per-household benefits delivered by Hawaii credit unions are substantial. These benefits are equivalent to $106 per member or $202 per member household. Financing a $25,000 new automobile for 60 months at a not-for-profit Hawaii credit union will save an average $270 per year in interest expense compared to what you would pay at a for-profit institution in the state.

CREDIT UNIONS: • Provide the same products and services— including surcharge-free ATMs, online financial services, and free savings and checking accounts—as other financial institutions • Return their profits to their credit union members by providing better services, better rates, lower fees, and special discounts • Operate under the philosophy of “people helping people,” allowing their members to pool their savings, lend to one another, and own the organization
• Follow conservative investment practices and lend responsibly Federal credit unions are chartered and supervised by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Through this federal agency, savings in federal and most state-chartered credit unions are insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), a federal fund backed by the United States government.

HACBED’s Program currently partners with four credit unions – Kekaha FCU, Valley Isle Community FCU, Hickam FCU, and Waialua FCU. Over the last four tax seasons, these credit unions have helped taxpayers claim $898,958 in refunds. not only their members, but the community as a whole. Through these VITA sites, many in the community have been able to claim Earned Income Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits, something these individuals either never knew about or did not know how to claim. “VITA seemed like a natural fit for our organization”, says Kekaha FCU Manager Scot
Tsuchiyama, whose VITA program was honored with a national first-place award in the Credit Union National Association’s Dora Maxwell Award for Social Responsibility in 2008. “In the three tax seasons that we’ve participated, we’ve brought over $413,000 in refund money back to the economy of the Westside of Kauai. This is grass roots economic stimulus that helps both merchants and residents of Kauai.” Valley Isle Community FCU Executive Vice President Trevor Tokishi explains, “Through the VITA program we are able to provide help to those in the community who need it the most. And we wouldn’t be able to do that without the help and support that we get through our partnership with the Family and Individual Self-Sufficiency Program at HACBED.”
