Hotel and Travel Industry FCU staff at the Charity Walk on Oahu.

Walking the walk for local charity Hotel & Travel Industry Federal Credit Union raised $1,400 in donations for the 2013 Visitor Industry Charity Walk. This year’s event was held on Saturday, May 18, and began at Ala Moana Beach Park. In addition to fundraising, 35 walkers from the credit union took part in the six-mile walk.

“It brings us a sense of joy to be able to give

back to the communities we serve,” says Hotel and Travel Industry FCU President Cheryl Nakai.

This year’s annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk raised a record $1.67 million for Hawaii charities. A total of 14,736 walkers on Oahu, Maui, Hawaii island, Kauai, Lanai, and Molokai participated. The fundraising walk features food booths and entertainment.

The Oahu walk raised $452,000. The other islands held their charity walks earlier in May. Maui hotel workers raised the most money, $701,716.

Hawaii’s credit unions pledge $500,000 to Kapiolani’s Children’s Miracle Network After 15 years of successful giving, Hawaii’s Credit Unions are embarking on an ambitious project to benefit the children of our islands. The Hawaii Credit Union League announced on September 17 a pledge through Kapiolani’s Children's Miracle Network of $500,000 to the Campaign for Hawaii’s Children to rebuild and expand Kapiolani’s Medical Center for Women & Children.

Called "5 In 5", the program aims to raise $500,000 in five years. The pledge marks a new record for credit unions in Hawaii, a long-term partner of Kapiolani Medical Center and its Childraen's Miracle Network Hospitals Credit Unions for Kids program.

Co-chaired by Dee Jay Mailer and Bert Kobayashi, the Campaign for Hawaii’s Children has raised $28.4 million toward a $30 million goal

to fund the first phase of a multi-year master plan to rebuild Kapiolani Medical Center.

The Phase 1 renovation and rebuild will allow family-centered care with private rooms in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. This will allow families to participate in their child's care around the clock. The rebuild will meet critical care needs of Hawaii’s keiki, as the Pacific region's sole tertiary referral center and Level III-B Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The new facility will also provide teaching space to train Hawaii’s health care professionals in ObGyn and Pediatric care, via collaborative programs with the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and other organizations.

At the successful completion of the Five-In-Five project, the waiting room in the rehabilitation area in the new hospital wing will be named “Hawaii’s Credit Unions for Kids”.

CU Hawaii FCU raises funds for Special Olympics

A determined school teacher establishes the first credit union in Hawaii The story of how Hawaii’s first credit union was started is a lesson in one man’s passion and single minded determination. Archie Jackson was a school teacher on the Big Island who learned about credit unions through happenstance and who tenaciously pursued the establishment of a credit union to serve the financial needs of Big Island school teachers. This is how the first credit union in Hawaii came to be established in 1936, just two years after the passage of the Federal Credit Union Act. While attending the 1935 National Education Association Conference in Denver, Colorado, Archie Jackson decided to attend a break out session presented by the National Credit Union Association.

“I went to the meeting of the National Credit Union Association, not having the remotest idea of what they stood for,” Jackson recalled in an article he wrote before his death in 1980.“I came out of the meeting three hours later with the conviction that a credit union was something my local island needed, and

CU Hawaii FCU’s last fund raiser for 2012 was Mile of Quarters for the Special Olympics – East Hawaii. In just three weeks the credit union raised and presented Special Olympics – East Hawaii Area Director, Carey Uchida with a with a check in the amount of $2,051.58.

The mission of Special Olympics is to improve the lives of 170 million people worldwide with intellectual disabilities through sports training and athletic competition.

“Here in Hawaii Special Olympians from every island compete on Oahu each year. CU Hawaii’s fundraising efforts help Big Island athletes pay for travel to Oahu,” stated Cheryl Weaver, AVP marketing manager.

Over the last four years CU Hawaii FCU has raised nearly $22,000 for Mile of Quarters.

It took Jackson months to convince teachers on the Big Island they needed a credit union. He would visit local schools to pitch the credit union idea to teachers, sometimes driving 100 miles to get to the Kona side of the island. He wrote articles for the local education association journal explaining the need for a credit union. He sent out dozens of letters to school principals promoting formation of a credit union and asking letter be posted on school bulletin boards.

“I even wangled a position near the end of the program to speak to all the Hawaii Island teachers at their convention,” he remembered.

Jackson finally sent out a poll, asking, "Should we set up a credit union for Big Island teachers?" The response was favorable, though he suspected many didn’t know what a credit union was, but would go along with the idea he was so passionate about. He enlisted six teachers who pooled $30 to start the credit union. On April 27, 1936,

Big Island Teachers Federal Credit Union— the very first credit union in the Territory of Hawaii—was chartered.

At the end of 1936 the credit union has had 65 members, $2149.54 on deposit and 12 loans totaling $1,260 Serving members in the early months required a lot of patience and endurance.

Big Island Teachers FCU drew members from all parts of the island— some 4,015 square miles.

Sometimes a request for money would come from a member clear across the island. Mail service in those days was very slow. Jackson took many trips to Kona and Puna that first year to assist teachers in need.

When possible, he would pile the family in his car and make a picnic out of it, since it would be an all-day drive.

Even after Archie Jackson moved to Oahu where more credit unions were being chartered, he kept his account at Big Island Teachers FCU and secured his place in the history of Hawaii’s credit union movement.

Long before formal credit unions existed, Hawaii’s early plantation workers understood the concept of “tanomoshi” or money pool. Informal tanomoshi groups grew out of friends who would pool their money and make low-cost loans to each other, something banks would not do.

Credit unions were founded on this basic idea of trust and responsibility, rewarding members with longterm financial security.

In many cases, credit unions started with small circles of individuals bound by common interests, or similar jobs and ambitions.

Organizing the first credit union in Hawaii, for instance, involved six teachers pooling $30 to form the Big Island Teachers Federal

Credit Union in April 1936.

In October of that same year, the Hawaii Territorial Employees' FCU became the first to be chartered on Oahu.

the Lanai FCU in 1938.

On Kauai, it was a little different. Four credit unions were chartered on the same day in 1938. These were the Kauai Teachers FCU,

Today, it is known as the Hawaii State FCU, and is the second largest in the state, with assets of more than $1.2 billion.

Credit unions were formed on the other islands as well. The oldest on three other islands are the Maui Teachers FCU, which opened in 1936; First Hawaiian Homes FCU on Molokai, 1937; and

Kekaha FCU, Koloa FCU, and Lihue CU. The abundance of credit unions didn't stop William Fernandes and his friends from taking responsibility for their own financial future. In 1954, Fernandes and nine others pooled all their money, $595, to form` Kauai Community FCU with the help of the Hawaii Credit Union
