I

love having the opportunity to dine out numerous times per week as a part of my job. You know, it’s a tough task to make room in your belly time and time again for new food adventures, but someone’s got to do it — and this girl is not complaining!

Yet, because a good majority of my days are spent eating at some pretty fabulous restaurants, when I’m home, I often like to juice — throw some fruits and veggies into a blender and blend away! It’s healthy, easy and a lot of fun.

So, this week at work, I got down to business, ready to tackle a new Ono, You Know assignment, and guess what? Well, there was to be no monkeying around, because this assignment was like no other. I put the fork down, as no eating was involved. Instead, I traded my utensils for a straw, because it was time to drink up on bananas! However, I wouldn’t consider this “juicing,” as I was spoiled silly at the following Ono, You Know establishments with drinks I could never do justice to if I were to make them at home — a banana 2 | DINING OUT | APRIL 7-13, 2013

Himalayan Kitchen Since 2004, Himalayan Kitchen has reached the peak of perfection with its Indian and Nepalese fare. Its naan bread and lamb curry are off the charts, quickly making Himalayan Kitchen a fullfledged favorite on my list of superb restaurants.

As soon as I set foot into this quaint establishment, located on 11th Avenue, I felt as if I was transported to another part of the world — India, perhaps — enjoying a fabulous lunch on the patio of what to some may be a hidden gem of an eatery.

The food is spot on, and don’t get me started on the drinks, especially the lassi. Owner and head chef Suman Basnet knows his Banana Lassi. A lassi is a popular yogurt-based drink that traces its ori– See page 18

izzling hot, 678 Hawaii brings a new dimension to the traditional Korean yakiniku-style of dining.

With more than 250 locations in Korea, this contemporary and chic barbecue franchise has expanded to the U.S. and recently made its mark in the Islands last November. Since then, 678 Hawaii has been enticing patrons with its dedication to excellence.

According to restaurant general manager Steve Song, 678 Hawaii only utilizes meats originating from an exclusive collection of farms in California that use a combination of a superior breed of cattle and animal management techniques.

caught up with Song over morsels of meaty delicacies, and bowls of soups and noodles, not to mention sides of kimchi, bean sprouts, seaweed and more — ready to delve into a carnivore’s dream turned reality.

DO: With various Korean yakiniku-style restaurants on Oahu’s dining scene, what makes 678 Hawaii stand in a league of its own?

Song: 678 Hawaii is not your typical mom-and-pop Korean restaurant. Instead, we are a new and modern yakiniku-style restaurant with a dynamic, trendy and hip atmosphere — the décor has an industrial feel — that appeals to a younger crowd. What we offer is a more modern take on tra-

ditional Korean yakiniku selections.

DO: Everything here looks delicious. What are some must-trys for firsttimers to the restaurant?

Song: Being that 678 Hawaii is a yakiniku restaurant, customers enjoy cooking their meats on the yakiniku grills, and if it's your first time here, our servers will gladly assist in the cooking process. Popular yakiniku sets (main courses) include Premium Combo Yakiniku Set, Mixed Combo Yakiniku Set, Pork Combo Yakiniku Set and 678 Beef Combo Yakiniku Set. My favorite is the Premium set, which is offered all day. Priced at $59.99 (feeds two to three people) and $94.99 (feeds three to four people), this set presents you with thinly sliced brisket, prime rib eye and U.S. Kobe chuck flap tail. A lot of customers also like our Mixed Combo Yakiniku Set ($52.99 feeds two to three, $84.99 feeds three to four) because it includes a little bit of everything, from premium seared pork belly to prime rib eye and U.S. Kobe boneless short rib or outside skirt.

All yakiniku sets come with banchan (side dishes) and steamed egg, corn cheese, onion, kimchi, bean paste stew, kimchi stew or seafood soft tofu stew.

DO: 678 Hawaii only uses top-grade meats.

What are some premier characteristics of the yakiniku meats?

Song: The meat that we use is some of the best. We provide American Kobestyle beef that has no

678 HAWAII added hormones, no antibiotics and no animal byproducts in the feed.

DO: 678 Hawaii also offers traditional Korean fare that is not considered to be yakiniku dining. Please explain.

Song: For lunch, we offer 678 Kalbi Jjim ($25.99).

This steamed entree can feed two people and features kalbi (beef short ribs) mixed with soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, peppers, onions, ginger juice and a bit of sugar simmered in a large pot.

The meat is tender and very tasty. Customers can request Kalbi Jjim to be spicy or mild.

We retrieved this successful recipe from someone who served this dish for more than 100 years at Jiri Mountain in Korea.

If you're in the mood for soup during lunch hour, try Beef-Rib Soup ($11.99), a beef broth soup complemented with beef short ribs, stewed beef, daikon, onions, dates and ginseng.

This is one of our most popular soups and a very healthy option.

Then, we have a dish called Black Cold Noodle, available for lunch, happy hour and dinner if ordered with a yakiniku set. Black Cold Noodle consists of long and thin noodles made from the starch of arrowroot. It’s served in a large stainless-steel bowl with a tangy, iced broth, julienned cucumbers, slices of boiled egg and morsels of cold boiled beef. Traditionally, the long noodles would be eaten without cutting, as they symbolize longevity of life and good

health, but our servers will gladly cut your noodles with scissors if you request.

Spicy mustard and vinegar also may be added for extra flavor.

DO: Happy Hour runs from 9:30 p.m. to closing.

What are some hot deals that patrons can take advantage of?

Song: During happy hour our Happy Pork Combo is priced at $33.99 and Happy 678 Combo is $38.99. You can order soup with these combos for $3.99, as well.

678 Kalbi Jjim is on special for $21.99, Spicy Pork Short Rib is $19.99 and Jumbo Kimchi Stew with Ramen and Mondoo is $19.99. As for drinks, Yogurt Soju costs $7.99 and Soju is $5.99.

DO: Cleanliness is an important aspect here, correct?

Song: Yes, sanitation is a priority at 678 Hawaii. The interior of the restaurant is very modern and clean. We even have a tin can-style chair where you can take the top off and put your belongings in the can, so you don’t have to put your bag on the ground. Also, there is a hose vent over every table’s yakiniku grill to clean the air. The design of the vacuum directly above the grill prevents the smell of meat to get on your clothes.

It’s important that we use high-tech, top-of-the-line grilling and vent systems because there is nothing worse than leaving a Korean restaurant smelling like barbecue and smoke.

DO: As general manager, it’s important to you that each patron experiences the ultimate dining venture

from the moment they set foot on the premises to the time they leave. Correct?

Song: Absolutely! I worked in the hospitality industry for more than 10 years, and I want to give our customers a great experience where they’ll want to come back again. Parking is convenient and free on Kalauolalani Way. Our servers are very attentive and friendly. They will replace your grill every time you cook meat, and they will always refill your water and replenish your side dishes. There also are call buttons at every table. If you want to place an order, ask for the bill or more water, just press the button and a server will be at your table in less than 20 seconds — a very quick response time.

hiro’s Saimin Haven honors its founder Franz Shiro “Mistah Saimin” Matsuo with a Founder’s Day special on Tuesday, April 9 — enjoy the Small Saimin with Garnishes for only 94 cents all day long.

The dish is normally priced at $3.85, but Shiro, who passed away last May would’ve turned 94 last month, so the promotional price serves as a special tribute to him.

In business since 1969, Shiro’s is known for its extensive selection of saimin combinations, as well as breakfast foods, plate lunches, sandwiches and “burga sandwiches.”

Some of Shiro’s original recipes that continue to be popular with customers include “Beeg” Shiro on Bun ($7.65), a triple-decker sandwich with teri beef, char siu, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato; and “Salute to Salud” Saimin ($8.05) with a whopping 15 pieces of fishcake in three variations, wun tun, vegetables and garnishes, and created for world champion boxer Jesus Salud.

As for the saimin, there are 64 different options or you can create your own, all with noodles made fresh daily from its own Five Star Noodle Factory.

Customers also can

choose how they want their saimin — rare, medium or well-done, and the dashi which is clam-based can be substituted with Hot & Spicy or Miso Broth for an additional 95 cents.

Along with his food and flamboyant personality, Shiro also was known for his inspirational poems which he did for about 40 years. “He never missed a week,” remembers Matsuo. “About a month be-

fore he passed, Bryce (Shiro’s grandson who serves as restaurant manager) asked him, ‘Grandpa, do you mind if I take over writing the poems?’ And grandpa was so excited and said, ‘I would be honored if you took over. I would be so happy.’ For him that’s his legacy, his poetry.”

Grab-’n-go delights that are dynamite

The traditional Japanese bento is one such example; it’s still relevant in our day and age with its perfect blend of flavors and convenience.

Mamaya understands the value of the bento, in fact, the entire restaurant is founded on the same principals of convenience and customization.

“People don’t need to wait. They can just graband-go,” says operations manager Monette Lastino of the offerings at Mamaya.

And, as an added bonus, customers have the option of customizing their bentos, substituting multi-grain rice for white rice or changing up sides and garnishes simply by telling the cashier. “People don’t need to buy the stuff they don’t like.”

Jun says a most-coveted entree on the menu is Sashimi Donburi, which features a vibrant array of maguro, salmon, unagi and more on a bed of vinegar rice.

Here at Sakura Restaurant, presentation and taste are essential elements evident in all of its exquisite creations.

Maguro ahi is a local fish that the restaurant retrieves from the fish market on a daily basis.

“We use bigeye ahi and it’s very tender,” Jun says.

Morsels of avocado, chiso, cucumber and a hint of wasabi add texture and substance to the dish.

While obtaining the freshest of local fish is integral for Sakura Restaurant, hamachi is shipped in from Kumamoto, Japan, twice a week.

“It’s a beloved fish by locals in the Islands and it has a strong flavor.”

A Japanese delicacy of ika (squid) is brought in from Kyushu, Japan, and topped with tobiko.

“Our customers really take a liking to ika and we’re happy to offer it,” Jun says.

Warm vinegar sushi rice is ideal for Sashimi Donburi, as Jun says it pairs perfectly with raw fish.

Unagi (eel) is grilled and glazed with a sweet kabayaki sauce.

Fish favorites of Atlantic salmon and ikura also accompany the dish, and are must-haves when it come to sashimi creations.

“The calamari is slow-braised, which brings out the flavor while it remains really tender, and serves as a nice addition to our menu,” says owner and general manager Roy Nakamura. “We’ve also made the salads a little smaller and lowered the price accordingly, so they go better with dinner or pupu items.”

The lounge opens at 5 p.m., 30 minutes prior to dinner service, and features a daily happy hour that runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The specially priced menu includes a host of deals including 20 percent off sushi, $3 standard cocktails, $3 domestic beers and $4 wine specials.

Additionally, the lounge offers up nightly drink specials within the happy hour window, such as: Flavored Sakes ($4, available Mon-

day) including peach, lychee and apple; Heineken and Heineken Light “Green Bottles” ($4, available Thursday); 5 Mojitos ($5.50, available Friday) including coconut, lychee, pineapple, passion fruit, mango and melon; and Martinis ($5.50, available Sunday) including apple, lychee, cosmopolitan, lemon drop and chocolate.

Pupus also play a prominent role on the lounge’s menu, which includes local favorites and “East meets West” appetizers such as Sweet Potato Fries ($7), Kobe Scallops ($11) and Garlic Pork Chops ($14). The succulent pork chops are brined, gently fried and served with a special dipping sauce infused with more garlic to enhance the tender, juicy pork’s flavors.

“It’s a nice added touch where customers can enjoy a round or two before heading into dinner,” says Nakamura of the happy hour and lounge specials. “Diners can also avoid the rush-hour traffic, kick back and enjoy the calm, casual atmosphere.”

Those craving sushi may look forward to a wide array of freshly prepared selections, including Rainbow Roll ($14). The colorful creation has stood out as a customer favorite for years and features a California roll base topped with avocado, salmon, hamachi and maguro, which produce an ar-

ray of appeasing flavors and colors.

For dessert, Nakamura recommends Red Velvet or Double Chocolate Cupcakes ($5 each).

The tasty morsels are loaded with flavor and serve as a sweet finale to a hearty meal enjoyed with family and friends. Diners also can deck out the dessert by adding vanilla or green tea ice cream to make it an a la mode endeavor for just $1 more.

“Everything is presented before you and cooked to order, so you know you’re getting a fresh product,” says Nakamura of the Kobe experience. “It’s a concept that’s always been present with us, but is becoming more popular with other restaurants. As far as freshness goes, it shows in all our items.

You get really good food along with an entertaining presentation.”

hen scouting out a dose of comfort food in a friendly setting, Hawaii patrons tend to flock to places like New Eagle Cafe. There’s something about the quiet charm of a local-style diner filled with regulars that hits the spot

like nothing else.

Despite its name, New Eagle is actually an old-favorite with roots going back to the 1960s, when the Teruya family took over downtown’s former Eagles Cafe. After a location change in 1976, the restaurant settled into the Nimitz area in 1988.

Even with a new owner and an updated look in tow, the eatery’s warm atmosphere and menu maintain a certain feel from the past — a piece of older local culture that has remained amid today’s constantly changing dining scene. For that reason, it continues to be cherished, as do many of its classic eats such as oxtail soup or prime rib.

Owner Tae Im suggests trying something really old-school, such as Beef Liver ($11.75).

“I know people would think its not exactly the most popular item,” he says with a laugh, “but we actually sell a lot of liver because we’re one of the few places that has it on the menu.”

Love it or hate it, the incomparable menu item is popular among older patrons who grew up eating it. At New Eagle, thin pieces of liver are grilled and served with a string of bacon and onions. Its flavor is so distinctly liverish that the only way to understand it is to try it yourself. AliCarte can convey, though, that when combined with some bacon and onion in one bite, the liver dish is slightly, sort-of reminiscent of meatloaf in taste and texture.

To complete the meal, each entree is served with a choice of white rice, brown rice, mashed potatoes or fries, and hot vegetables.

After acquiring the diner last November, the new owner decided to dress up the menu with a few additions as well. Spicy Pork ($12.75) has taken flight among customers who love its thinly sliced pieces of pork marinated in a spicy Korean-style sauce. The dish is generously presented on a hot plate with onions, which allows the pork to take on a glorious sizzle.

So when it comes to local comfort food, New Eagle Cafe’s menu soars.

Hightail it to Hy’s for April menu

ax season, by its very nature, inhabits a gloomy segment of the calendar. Filing deadlines and changing tax laws can deter even the most optimistic diner from enjoying a night out.

That’s a shame because there are deals to be found and it doesn’t take much effort.

One such affordable option is Hy’s Steak House’s April Menu. The threecourse meal is satisfying and favorable enough to get even the most conservative photographer dancing with kitchen delight.

Sitting among the aromatic smell of Hy’s kiawe wood broiler, the course begins with a choice of Hy’s Mixed Garden Salad or the Soup du Jour. The salad is a wonderful mix of ’Nalo greens, red and yellow tear drop tomatoes,

shaved carrots, red onion and corn sprouts topped with a light champagne vinaigrette. The soup option rotates between Lobster Bisque, Cream of Asparagus with crab and Clam Chowder.

Six-ounce beef medallions are broiled, topped with naturally sweet panseared scallops, coated with a béarnaise sauce and served with red peppers, carrots, and yellow wax beans. The combination is spectacular. The beef is smoky and buttery soft, the béarnaise sauce is creamy and the vegetables provide a necessary texture

change. If you’re more surf than turf, the fresh catch is equally as flavorful.

The fresh catch depends on availability, but is prepared with a white fish (usually onaga or opakapaka) that is coated and fried, and served on a bed of stir-fry vegetables of carrots, onion, broccoli, baby bok choy, spinach, Hamakua mushrooms and won bok. Delicious. The combination is crunchy, sweet and fresh. In other words, it’s what one would expect from a such a refined dinning establishment.

Entrees come with a choice of baked potato, garlic mashed potatoes (yes!), potatoes O’Brien (begosh and begorrah!), steak fries, or white or brown rice.

The meal concludes with palate-cleansing HaagenDazs Ice Cream or Mango Sorbet.

illion Restaurant has been a go-to spot for Korean eats since 1989.

With its friendly staff and welcoming dining room, the restaurant seems to exude a family-like atmosphere. And there is a good reason for that: The five siblings of the Paik family run the establishment.

Million Restaurant manager Diana Paik explains that she and her three sisters and brother are originally from Korea. Diana was the first of the siblings to come to the Islands about 30 years ago.

Eventually, all of the siblings were reunited in Hawaii — and now all work at the restaurant.

Along with the friendly atmosphere that this tight-knit family has cultivated, their cohesiveness also is responsible for the food at Million. The Paik’s family recipes make up much of the menu.

Boasting authentic, traditional Korean cuisine, Million Restaurant often draws inspiration from the Paiks’ trips back home to Korea.

alking into Million Meat Jun and Teriyaki Chicken Plate ($14.95) Restaurant feels a lot like Lawrence Tabudlo photos walking into a friend’s dining room for a casual dinner gettogether. With its cozy dining room filled with spacious booths and a friendly staff, Million certainly is a relaxing place to enjoy a tasty traditional Korean meal.

Among its most popular menu options is the yakiniku — which includes about a dozen selections to choose from. As far as yakiniku goes, Bul Go Gi ($23.95) has been a favorite for many customers. The dish recently has undergone a tasty tweak.

“We are making it with a different sauce,” Million manager Diana Paik explains. “It Yangnyum Kal Bi ($26.95) is a special sauce that is popular in Korea. In Korea, there is a barbecue place that is really, really famous for its sauce.”

Here at Million, Paik says, they have used this well-known sauce as an inspiration to create their own similar sauce. And so far, it has been a hit.

At 808 Yong’s BBQ, daebak can be applied to its entire menu.

Open since 2011, the eatery offers a broad range of dishes featuring authentic Korean food with a local flair.

Lovers of kalbi rejoice. For a very affordable price ($9.95), you not only get a generous portion of the restaurant’s Boneless Kalbi, you also get rice and four banchan (side dish) choices. Marinated for one to two days in a secret sauce (owner

and chef Yong Tom won’t divulge the details), every tender bite leaves you wanting more.

The most memorable dining experiences include friends and family.

Regardless of the time you stop in, the food will have you screaming “daebak” with every bite.

The chefs at Million Restaurant must have been particularly inspired recently, as the last few weeks have been all about changes for the eatery. In addition to unveiling the new sauce, the restaurant also has introduced a new combo plate — Meat Jun and Teriyaki Chicken Plate ($14.95). This is the first time that Million has offered teriyaki chicken, and customers have been loving the combo plate so far. The meal also is served with seaweed soup and rice.

Another recent menu addition is Spicy Chicken Feet ($15.95).

There is only one way to see what else Million has been cooking up and to try some of these new flavors — stop by the Sheridan Street restaurant during its new hours: Monday–Saturday, 5 p.m.-2 a.m., and Sunday, 5–11 p.m.

yu-Kaku in Windward Mall puts its own spin on traditional desserts that will make everyone at the table a happy camper.

Roasted Black Sesame Ice Cream ($4.75) with caramel is a heavenly mixture of salty and sweet.

“There’s sprinkled arashio (sea salt) on top, so it brings

out the flavor of the sesame ice cream,” explains assistant manager Bailey Kanae.

The arashio also brings out the nutty flavor of the ice cream, so there’s no doubt that the flavors in this dish are paired well.

“Sesame seeds are normally meant for savory dishes, but it’s a little bit sweeter because of the caramel,” Kanae says.

Gyu-Kaku’s Bread Pudding Bites ($7.95, add $4.25 for vanilla bean ice cream) might look to be a dish

meant for sharing. But one bite of this dish will have you hoarding it all for yourself.

“This is our most popular dessert,” says Kanae. “We like to serve it with vanilla bean ice cream on the side.”

The pairing of the ice cream is the perfect play of temperatures. But this is no traditional bread pudding.

Think malasadas — soft on the inside with a crunchy crust on the outside.

Everyone loves a little deep-frying when it comes to dessert, and Gyu-Kaku understands this innate need deep within all of us. Its Deep Fried Cheese Cake ($8.50) is paired with vanilla bean ice cream.

“We like to add chocolate sauce, but people have choices of chocolate, caramel or cinnamon,” Kanae explains.

Exclusive to Gyu-Kaku in Windward Mall is Wasabi Ice Cream ($4.50) and Homemade Strawberry Cream Pie ($5.95), which is coming out this summer. The latter is the owner’s special recipe and will feature other local fruits, atop a graham cracker crust, cream cheese filling and balsamic vinaigrette sauce.

Gyu-Kaku is known for its excellent quality of meat and yakiniku-style dining, but many times we fill up our carnivorous sides and neglect our sweet tooth.

But the desserts at Gyu-Kaku in Windward Mall are no joke, stop in and see for yourself.

or many generations, Hawaii has fostered and embraced a strong Portuguese influence on the Islands. So, it comes as no surprise that Adega Portuguesa, a restaurant dedicated to serving traditional Portuguese and Brazilian cuisine, would fare quite well.

Approximately two years after Trigo Da Silva, the owner of Adega, moved to Hawaii, he began to feel homesick.

“I really loved living here, but I started to miss some things about Portugal, such as the culture, dance and especially the food,” says Da Silva.

Rather than return to Portugal, Da Silva decided to combine the best of both worlds and open a restaurant true to his homeland’s heritage.

Over the past year, Adega has secured a loyal fan

base of diners who appreciate the cuisine’s rich depth of flavor and simple, yet ingeniously uncomplicated cooking techniques. In addition to food, the restaurant regularly hosts daily live music and dance performances.

“Like Hawaiian culture, Portuguese and Brazilian culture is all about sharing what we love with others,” says Da Silva.

Favorite dishes at Adega include Caldo Verde (starting at $5), a delectable soup composed of potatoes, onions, kale and chouriço sausage. Filetes De Feixe Recheados (starting at $17) also is a popular option, a fresh fish filet with crabmeat stuffing topped with a tomato cream sauce.

Last month, Adega introduced Brazilian rodízio to the menu. Available every Tuesday through Sunday

from 5 to 9:30 p.m., the unique barbecue experience allows customers to choose from an unlimited amount of different cuts of meats for a fixed price of $29 per person.

“Rodízio offers a true Brazilian dining experience,” says Da Silva. “The meat is expertly grilled to bring out each cut of meat’s most rustic and succulent flavors.”

Meaning “rotisserie” in Portuguese, rodízio involves the grilling of meats including chicken, pork and beef, which are cooked on top of a powerful grill oven, specially ordered from Brazil. The meal comes with an assortment of sides including rice, beans and fries.

“We are very excited to bring rodízio to our restaurant,” says Da Silva. “It is a very traditional part of Brazilian cuisine.”

Popular meat cuts for rodízio barbecue include Picanha, a lean, juicy cut of sirloin steak, as well as Fraldinha, said to be one of the most flavorful and tender cuts of beef. Diners also may enjoy poultry options such as Frango-style Chicken, cooked with a special Brazilian seasoning rich with herbs and garlic. Pork lovers can find comfort in Lombo-style Pork, a delectably marinated pork loin, or Linguica, a mild yet flavorful Brazilian sausage.

In addition to the main menu, the restaurant also sponsors a “Taste of Portugal” event the first Saturday of each month from 5 to 7 p.m. Adega invites customers to enjoy five traditional Portuguese dishes, which vary month to month. After each meal, diners may rate each dish on a score sheet. A similar event for Brazilian cuisine called “Taste of Brazil” occurs every third Sunday.
