hat a week! I’ve been under the weather, and this time I’ve got it bad. There must be some sort of virus going around, because I’ve caught it full-force. You name
it, I’ve got it — severe body aches, a fever, a runny nose that requires a box of tissues a day, an irritating cough and a throat that is so painfully raw. How pleasant, right? Well, I’ve complained enough.
It’s no fun being sick, especially when my workouts have been put on hiatus (major bummer), but life goes on! There’s work to be done and good food to eat! On the bright side though,
the best way to get better is with nabe, better known as soul food, in my opinion. Nabemono is a Japanese dining concept that refers to a variety of hot-pot or one-pot dishes. The dish is cooked atop portable stoves at the table where diners take the reins and cook a myriad of ingredients, from seafood to vegetables and meat, in a pot filled to the brim with a mouthwatering broth. So, this week, nabe is just what the doctor ordered! The soup soothes my throat and the steam clears my sinuses. Here at the following Ono, You Know establishments, I’ve come alive once again, all thanks to their delicious nabe!

ucked away in the heart of Chinatown is a place of solitude, where the palate becomes one with authentic Chinese cuisine beyond compare. Here, at Little Village Noodle House on Smith Street, patrons are welcome into a rustic, open atmosphere that is an escape from the bustling city life just outside the doors. The sound of chirping birds can be heard within the eatery as friendly servers quickly present plates of both exotic and familiar fare to tables, where diners can’t wait to dive right in.

Founded more than a decade ago by Kenneth and Jennifer Chan, Little Village Noodle House was built with uniqueness in mind. “We’ve always wanted Little Village to be different from other Chinese restaurants in Hawaii,” says partner David Chang. “There are countless Chinese restaurants in our state, so we wanted ours to stand out. Here, we emphasize Northern-style (Chinese) cuisine, but we also feature some Cantonese-style dishes because that’s what locals are used to.” According to Chang, Northern-style Chinese cuisine can be categorized as spicy, with little use of gravy, whereas Cantonese cuisine is renowned for its generous portions of gravy and flavors evoking a mild flair. “Everything on our menu is good, but our signature dishes — as indicated on the menu — are exceptional. We also have a specials board that’s
worth looking at,” Chang states. “Family-style dining is our concept, in which everyone can share many dishes and try a bit of everything. Family-style dining brings people together.” To begin, Chang recommends, Pot Stickers ($4.95 for four pieces, $7.75 for eight pieces), which are handwrapped with chicken, pork or tofu fillings and pan-fried or steamed to perfection. A dipping sauce infused with garlic, ginger and apple cider vinegar accompanies this appetizer. With 113 items on the menu, selecting a handful of entrees may seem utterly impossible, but Orange Chicken ($9.95) and Honey Walnut Shrimp ($16.50) are two must-haves. “We use a secret sweet and sour sauce, made out of real orange juice, in our Orange Chicken,” explains Chang, noting that the superlative sauce coats each tender morsel of boneless, deep-fried chicken.
As the restaurant’s No. 1 seller, Honey Walnut Shrimp presents a half pound of jumbo shrimp tossed in a garlic and green onion cream sauce, topped with candied walnuts. This seafood lover’s favorite is the epitome of sweet and savory. Next on the list of seafood specialties is Steamed Basa Fillet ($14.50), a flaky white fish doused in a homemade ginger onion soy sauce and garnished with fresh slivers of ginger and onion. “The taste of the fillet is very neutral and clean, and the sauce brings a nice flavor to the dish. It’s a healthy option,” Chang says. What’s in a name? Well, it’s only fitting that Little Village Noodle House dishes up an array of noodle classics, including Seafood Fried Noodle ($9.95). This best-selling specialty features a plate of crispy chow mein with gravy adorned with a medley of shrimp, squid, scallops, shiitake mush-

rooms, carrots, won bok, baby corn and water chestnuts. “Customers always compliment on the fresh taste of our dishes, and that’s because we use only the highest quality ingredients, and we use absolutely no MSG or artificial flavors,” Chang states. “It’s all about our special cooking techniques. There’s a unique wok cooking style that brings out the natural flavors.” f Finally, a show-stopper lies in Vol-
Volcano Pork Chop ($12.75)
cano Pork Chop ($12.75), in which deep-fried pork chop is beautifully battered and topped off with cloves of roasted garlic, wrapped in foil and ignited at your table. Small flames bring about a flair, and it’s ready to be devoured. Little Village Noodle House caters to eclectic diners, with a broad range of its customer base kamaaina and visitors from the Mainland. “We firmly believe that it’s our food
and clean environment that keeps customers coming back for more. We cater to the customer,” Chang adds, mentioning that a vegetarian substitute is available for all dishes. “I hope for continued success for the restaurant. For those who have yet to try Little Village, I would like them to dine here, and for our longtime, loyal customers, I want them to rediscover the restaurant and try new items.”

Are you a chocolate lover? The Oreo Cake and Chocolate Fountain will do the trick. Trying to eat healthy? Pick up some fresh fruit (and dip it in the chocolate if you

ho would think Shiro's Saimin Haven would have appetizers? But, the fact they would have awesome homemade noodle dishes? Of course. Since 1969, the family-friendly eatery has dished out more than one million bowls of steaming broth and tender noodles, and with a massive menu of local favorites, the inclusion of pupus is obvious, but hidden. The appetizers are not segregated onto their own menu section, but rather grouped with “sides” ranging from poached eggs to tofu. So, if your

pleasure is pork belly, mochiko chicken or even a large plate of noodles to share, this is the section to ponder. Most popular, and perhaps best, is Crispy Pork Belly ($4.35). The baked and fried slices of pork began as a special, but customer demand forced its inclusion onto the main menu. No surprise there. The meat is slow roasted for three hours to remove most of the fat and to begin the crisping process. Upon order, the pork is fried, leaving the meat wonderfully crunchy, almost like a crispy pork rind, and the fat remains sweet and chewy. Homemade ponzu sauce completes the flavor. Country-Fried Noodles ($7.95), available eight different ways, is a dish as old as the restaurant and is often the first item requested for larger groups. Made in house, the noodles are mixed with pork, chicken, cabbage, white onion, green onion, char siu, luncheon meat and eggs to Mochiko Chicken ($3.95) create an item that catering manager Bryce Fujimoto says will create a small riot if taken off the menu. It's that popular. Another large plate to share is Maki Sushi Roll ($4.15), in which rice, tuna, seasoned egg roll and fish cake are rolled in a seaweed wrap and served in a portion not usually permissible for the price. That shouldn't be too surprising, as everything on the menu is fairly priced. Mochiko Chicken — tender, tangy and sweet — is just $3.95 and French Fries with Gravy is $2.70 for an appetizer that begins with beef and pork drippings reduced with carrots, onion and celery and served on top of crispy fries. Tasty, convienent and affordable, what more could you want?

t’s best known as the home of world-famous Max’s Fried Chicken, but Max’s of Manila is quite accommodating when it comes to meeting customer demands and expectations, and vegetarians are welcome. The dishes are cooked to order here, and several of them can be requested sans the meat (just ask your server), so you can just let the chickens go home to roost. Asparagus and Tofu ($8.95) complement each other quite well, and at Max’s they’re sauteed with wood ear mushrooms (black fungus) laced with ginger and

sesame oil. It’s a colorful, appetizing yet simple preparation that lets the fresh, tasty spears take center stage while the mushrooms and cubes of tofu shine in their sup-
VO porting roles, making this a sure bet for an encore the next time you visit the eatery. A cool, crisp salad fits the bill anytime, and Max’s Ubod Salad ($6.95) is a popular concoction. It’s made with coconut heart of palm, which is crisp like bamboo shoots but sweeter (without that
sometimes unpleasant odor bamboo shoots can emit, which some people don’t care for). The heart of palm is cubed, mixed with raisins, tossed in a very light, creamy sauce (which contains mayonnaise), topped with pineapple and served on a bed of fresh lettuce, so it’s crunchy, a little sweet

and a little tangy. So, there’s much more here than fried chicken and crispy pata. Let’s give Max’s a round of applause. ne of the best things about Hong Kong is the food, so when I heard Anytime Cafe owner Ken Wong speaking Cantonese, I had to ask if they are a Hong Kong-style restaurant. He said yes, and I immediately became excited. But the restaurant offers more than just Hong Kong-style cuisine. There also are burgers, sandwiches, and local favorites such as Loco Moco ($11.95) and Oxtail Soup ($11.95), as well as a variety of Italian dishes, including Pizza, Spaghettini and Risottos. My personal favorites on the menu are French Toast with Peanut Butter Filling-Hong Kong style ($6.95), Rice Soup or Jook ($4.95-$8.95), Green Onion Pancakes ($3.95) and Hai-nan Chicken Rice ($12.95). Also popular is Shrimp Wonton Noodle in Broth ($8.95), which can be substituted with shrimp noodle ($9.25) or served lo mein-style (add $2). "The noodles and wonton peel are from Canada," says Wong. "It's more of a traditional Hong Kongstyle dish. I'm Chinese, I'm from Hong Kong, I know what kind of noodles it should be and this is the closest I've found and good quality, so we don't mind the extra cost to bring it in." Some must-try new specials include Bone In Pork Chop ($14.95), which features a juicy pan-fried pork chop in a mushroom cream sauce served with vegetable and pasta; and Squid Ink Linguine with Calamari ($16.95), which is a fresh squid ink pasta tossed with calamari rings in a house marinara sauce. For dessert, Snow Ice is amazing, and available in mango, strawberry, green tea, milk, honeydew and taro flavors. And the beverage options are a great reflection of a Hong Kong cafe, with Hong KongStyle Coffee, Milk Tea and Mixed Coffee/Tea; as well as Tea with lemon, Honey Lemon, Soy Bean Milk and more. "We are a casual, family-friendly restaurant, and our prices are affordable,” says Wong.

he charming cafes of France collide with paradise at Brasserie Du Vin. With a full indoor bar and seating area, in addition to a quaint outdoor patio, this Bethel Street establishment boasts a plethora of French-inspired fare, including Pan Roasted Jidori Chicken Breast. Executive chef Marco Elder plans to add this dinner favorite to Du Vin’s lunch menu early next month, and highly recommends this rustic spread of ratatouille and tender chicken.
“It’s called airline chicken breast because the drumette and breast resemble a tail of an airplane,” Elder explains.
A free-range, organic airline chicken breast is the focal point of the dish, and Elder reveals that the majority of the flavor is derived from the red wine brine that soaks into every crevice of the meat. “We boil red wine with salt, sugar and sage and let the chicken sit in that concoction overnight. This results in moist and well-seasoned meat. We then pan roast it, and the sugar brings about a nice caramelization to the chicken.”
Ratatouille, a classic French side dish, is a gorgeous medley of locally grown diced vegetables, including fresh onions, yellow and red bell peppers, zucchini, eggplant and cherry tomatoes seasoned with white wine, thyme, garlic, salt and pepper. The earthy flavors of the ratatouille and chicken are infused with a lavender balsamic reduction, which presents an essence of tanginess that brings everything together. Fresh baby arugula also adds some spice to the dish.
“This dish was a playful inspiration off of a special I ran about a year ago, and we slowly perfected it to what it is today. It’s a great lighter fare for summer,” Elder says.
“The trick to ratatouille is that you have to slowly layer your ingredients and sauté them separately,” Elder explains. “With a good ratatouille, all the vegetables should be crunchy, nothing should be over-cooked. It’s served warm, not hot, so that the taste of the vegetables can permeate throughout your taste buds.”

ith a large brick oven stoked with kiawe wood and its resulting sweet, smoky aroma ready and rearing to go, Inferno’s Wood Fire Pizza has ignited Hawaii’s hunger for quality pizza pies. Each pizza at Inferno’s is hand-crafted and prepared with the finest, freshest ingredients, and baked to crispy perfection at 800 degrees in the distinctive dome-shaped oven dubbed “The Beast.” The business concept started as a mobile wood-fire pizza operation, and the pizzas’ popularity produced the permanent Ward Center location. “The pizzas are really just based on what people like here, and feature whatever local ingredients we can get,” says owner Kyle Okumoto. “We
make the dough fresh daily with flour from Italy. We use kiawe wood in the oven to create that flavor from the smoke, and the pizza cooks really fast so the crust is nice and crispy.” One of the distinctive pizzas offered up at Inferno’s is Guava Smoked Pork ($16), which features fresh mozzarella cheese, local Shinsato guava-smoked pork, fresh mushrooms, Maui onions and a locally crafted Kilauea barbecue sauce available in both spicy and mild. The sweet and savory pork coupled with the tangy barbecue sauce and crisp onions create a musttry assortment of flavors. For those diners who prefer a hearty helping of fresh vegetables, Inferno’s serves up a Veggie ($15) pizza, which includes fresh mozzarella, fresh mushrooms and Maui onions,
local tomatoes and olives. Margherita ($14) features a classic blend of fresh mozzarella, and local basil and tomatoes. Similarly, Spinach Garlic Tomato ($14) produces plenty of flavorful garlic, fresh mozzarella, spinach and local Roma tomatoes. Those diners craving an extra level of heat can reach for Chicken Ranch Jalapeno ($16) pizza, which features jalapenos, spinach, mushrooms, olives and roasted chicken. “It’s a way different pizza, a much better product than what you get at other pizza establishments,” says Okumoto. “You’ve got to try it. It’s an authentic, Neapolitan style pizza,” which is heralded for its hand-kneaded dough that bakes crispy on the outside while remaining tender and aromatic.

Prior to picking one’s favorite pizza, Infernos’ also satisfies diners with an array of appetizers including Potato Skins ($8 with Bacon and Cheese, Pepperoni or Sausage) or French Fries ($6 for plain, $8 for Bacon and Cheddar). Fresh salads also are available as the House Spring Mix ($4 for small, $8 for large) is accompanied by house-made pomegranate or strawberry vinaigrette. The multiple pizza selections at Inferno’s pair perfectly with the locally brewed beers crafted and served at the eatery. Hawaiian Islands Brewing Company has partnered with Inferno’s, tapping into a host of local flavor profiles that come through in the freshly brewed beverages. The Lei O’ Mano IPA, HI Brew Lager, Diamond Head Gold Ale and Akamai Amber Ale ($5 per pint) flow from the taps as do
Mac Nut Brown Ale and Kona Coffee Stout ($6 per pint), which have drawn rave reviews from customers thus far. The latter features hints of authentic Kona coffee that provides a bold, full-bodied flavor that truly embodies one of the state’s most popular exports. Mango Wheat Ale ($5 per pint) puts a local spin on the Belgian wheat-style beer that is both flavorful with hints of sweet fruit and easy to drink, while newly added Imperial IPA and BarleyWine ($10 per pint) please the palate one pint at a time. The ice-cold brews are available from Inferno’s full bar, and diners can order them by the glass as the piping hot pizzas are brought to the table. The beer also is available to go in the form of 64-ounce growlers ($18), which can be refilled over and over for $12 — a delicious and cost-effective option for
tailgating and large gatherings. Inferno’s also serves up happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m. daily, and includes $3 pints of most beer selections. The special drink menu also includes specialty dinks and cocktails for $3 apiece, including SakeTinis with fresh citrus and cranberry juices, Sriracha Bloody Mary and Margarita of the Mayans. The eatery recently introduced live music performances every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night from 5 to 9 p.m. by various local artists. Just in time for graduation season, Inferno’s is ready to help with hosting parties and large get-togethers for all occasions. The restaurant even features a special in-house catering menu, and those interested are encouraged to call 375-1200 for more details and information. ocated in Waikiki, Monsoon India enjoys a customer base from all over the world. “They give us the best compliments,” owner and chef Imran Khan says. “They tell us that it is the most authentic Indian food they have ever had.” And the food maintains its authenticity for good reason: Khan moved to the Islands from Pakistan in 2006 to attend school. But he soon found that his passions were elsewhere. When he first arrived in the Islands, Khan says that his cooking skills were limited. But he got hired at an Indian restaurant, where he learned the ropes from notable chefs. “Over time, I grew to love it,” he recalls. Before long, Khan was creating his own recipes drawing on inspiration from the foods he knew growing up. “I was raised eating the same type of food,” he says. With his creativity and experience in working all parts of the kitchen, Khan decided to start his own business. After owning another Indian restaurant previously, Khan opened the first branch of Monsoon India in Kihei, Maui. “After about two years, we expanded and opened a Monsoon India in Waikiki,” he explains. The restaurants have been so popular that, soon after, the Waikiki location opened its doors in 2010, another one in Lahaina soon followed. “We are looking forward to expanding even more,” he says. Owner/Chef Khan says that one of Imran Kahn the things that sets Monsoon India apart from other restaurants is its dedication to using fresh ingredients. “We do not use any frozen items here.” Monsoon India purchases all of its produce from local vendors to ensure that it’s serving fresh, quality vegetables. “It’s about healthy cooking, and it adds more flavor to the food,” he explains. “To keep the flavor in the food, you use fresh ingredients.”

hile diners might not necessarily associate Waikiki with quality Indian food, that’s exactly what Monsoon India, located in the Discovery Bay building, serves up. “Not too many people on this island know about Indian food,” says owner and chef Imran Khan. “Indian food is something very new here,” he says. “But the trend is changing and the word
is getting out.” Monsoon India specializes in authentic Indian cuisine from the Northern part of the country. To begin your foray into Indian cuisine, a popular appetizer is Vegetable Samosa ($6.95), which is a deep-fried vegetable turnover with a potato and green bean filling. “It is one of the most popular Indian appetizers,” Khan says. One of Monsoon India’s most popular entrees is Coconut

Chicken ($17.95), which features fresh coconut cooked with curry and is served with rice. “It’s rich, it’s thick and it has a lot of flavor to it,” he says, noting that it is not too spicy. “The chicken has been added to the sauce and it has been cooked to perfection, so all the flavors blend really well.” Khan also says Palak Paneer ($15.95), which is a combination of spinach and cottage cheese, is not to be missed.

least one day in advance because of the preparation that takes place. Unlike other roast duck, Tee Par Duck is made with different ingredients, which complete the marinade. “With the roast duck, we roast the whole duck, we don’t open it,” explains owner Calvin Wong of the cooking process. “With the Tee Par Duck, we open it completely and marinate the duck.” This process allows for a duck with full-bodied flavors. Depending on the size of the duck, it can take anywhere from 35 to 40 minutes to roast. Wong says Tee Par Duck
can feed anywhere from five to 10 people. The second special is Chicken Won Ton Soup and Casserole ($15 with the promotion, $30 regular price). A rich chicken broth is combined with half a chicken and 10 pieces of won ton — also making it a good dish to share around the table with friends or family members. Royal Garden, which has been open for more than 28 years at its Ala Moana Hotel location, continues to pride itself on its traditional offerings. “It is traditional Cantonese food, Hong Kongstyle,” says Wong.

these items are tried-and-true, this Nimitz eatery stirs up the pot with its one-of-akind Lobster Nabe. Priced at $27.95, patrons are presented with a whole Maine lobster served with tofu and vegetables in a savory broth, comprised of a shoyu base infused with seaweed. “Won bok, button mushrooms, tofu and the nabe broth are all very good,” says restaurant cook Gary Taguiran. “However, you don’t see many nabe offerings with a 1 pound lobster!” As Taguiran presented me with Lobster Nabe, I was beyond impressed. Once you pick the meaty morsels out of its shell and the chunks of lobster meat submerge in the broth, the taste is unbelievably ono — the pieces of lobster soak up all the flavors of the broth. Lobster Nabe comes complete with rice, miso soup, tsukemono, tossed salad and a beverage of your choice. Bite after bite, slurp after slurp, I started to feel better in no time! Ichiriki Japanese Nabe Restaurant The home of all things nabe is none other than Ichiriki Japanese Nabe Restaurant, where robust flavors and quality fresh ingredients stand in the forefront. Co-founders Issei Kazama and Riki Kobayashi opened the doors to Ichiriki’s original location on Piikoi Street in 2006, and to this day, the Piikoi store is my goto pick when I’m craving boiling pots of nabe or Japanese hot pot. According to Kazama, nabe is generally consumed in Japan during the cold winter months to provide warmth. Yet, a thought entered Kazama’s mind: “Why not serve nabe all year long in Hawaii?” That simple inquiry broke the stereotype of nabe solely being a winter dish. With a slew of nabe selections to choose from, it’s hard to decide on what to order. Although, when I’m congested, Angry Goma Nabe ($23.95) is the cure-all. As the restaurant’s spiciest nabe, hints of jalapeno, habanero peppers and a bit of sesame swim in the broth. It’s time to clear the sinuses! Add your choice of meat (it’s usually paired with pork, but I prefer ribeye) and the assortment of vegetables, salmon, shrimp, chicken and homemade meatballs to the mix and what you get is a filling feast with fantastic flavor and a zestful kick.

“Angry Goma Nabe has been on our secret menu for about a year now, with almost a cult following. We thought it would be a good time to add it to the regular menu, since so many people have been asking for a spicier nabe,” Kazama states. Mushroom Nabe ($24.95), with a grand assortment of seasonal mushrooms, along with Seafood Nabe ($28.95), a shoyubased nabe served with Madagascar shrimp, calamari and scallops, are my other Ichiriki favorites. The list goes on, but to make it easy for any Ichiriki firsttimer, know that you can’t go wrong here. Everything is delicious! The interactive dining experience of cooking nabemono never gets old. Fresh ingredients, an amazing broth and a portable stove at your table are all you need. And just when you think you’ve filled up on everything in your hot pot, think again. Ramen or udon is brought to the table at the end of your meal to enjoy with every last drop of soup! Ichiriki Japanese Nabe Restaurant 510 Piikoi St. #102 589-2299

Well, Tan Tan Nabe will bring you back to life, as this hot pot dish features a thick, sweet and spicy tan tan broth composed of sesame oil and a blend of secret spices. Then, tender strips of pork belly and ground pork, along with king, shiitake and enoki mushrooms, bean sprouts, tofu and cabbage are stirred into the broth for added flair. According to manager Aki Hirose, Japanese Restaurant Aki is the only place to obtain your tan tan nabe fix. “Nabe is quite popular nowadays, so we were inspired to present this dish to our customers,” he says. Grab a Slice of Boston’s Greatness STORY BY KYLE GALDEIRA PHOTOS BY NATHALIE WALKER

fter 19 years, Boston’s North End Pizza Bakery continues to serve as Hawaii’s original home of the 19-inch, three-pound pizza in the heart of Kailua. President Mike Bianchi built the pizzeria two decades ago on the “three pillars” of quality, quantity and price, and the same values serve as the foundation of the business today. Boston’s North End Pizza still serves up “Hawaii’s Largest Slice,” which constitutes one fourth of the massive pizza pie. While others have attempted to capitalize on the “Boston’s” moniker, the Kailua locale has remained true to its original recipes and fresh ingredients. “Over the last couple of years especially, we’ve really made an effort to inform our customers that Kailua is the one, only and original Boston’s North End Pizza Bakery that’s out there,” Bianchi says. “On the positive side, our original product has not changed. We use the best flour, fresh tomatoes — nothing from concentrate — the veggies are sliced fresh every day and the whole-milk mozzarella cheese is fresh, we don’t open up a frozen bag.” The original Cheese Pizza ($20) can be supplemented with additional toppings ($1.75 each) including pepperoni, sausage, meatball, bacon, ham, chicken, mushrooms, spinach, garlic and pineapple. Those clamoring for more melting cheese may choose to add extra cheese for an additional $2.50. Customers rave about
Boston’s most popular pizza, Spinach & Garlic ($23.50), a bold flavorpacked combination that is synonymous with the original Pizza Bakery. Three months ago, Bianchi revamped the menu to include even more specialty pizza options. Boston’s North End Pizza introduced an assortment of Chicken Pizzas ($28.95) including Buffalo Hot Wing Chicken Pizza, Chicken Alfredo Pizza, Chicken Cacciatore Pizza and even BBQ Chicken Pizza, a flavorful combination of juicy white chicken meat coupled with red onions, fresh mozzarella cheese, cilantro and

Shrimp Scampi ($28.95) is another new popular specialty creation, and just like its iconic pasta counterpart, the pizza boasts garlic, butter, olive oil sauce, mozzarella, parmesan and pecorino Romano cheeses surrounding juicy shrimp topped with fresh basil. It’s like taking a trip to Italy without leaving Kailua. Bianchi and his friendly staff are constantly looking for new ways to satisfy customers, including
adding flavorful Calzones ($5 apiece) including Italian Meatball Parmesan, Chicken Parmesan and the ever-popular Spinach, Garlic & Cheese. Boston’s North End Pizza also serves up fresh, healthy options such as Garden Salad ($2.99) and Chef Salad ($3.99), which is composed of hearts of romaine, cherry tomatoes, carrots, ham, cheese, black olives and mushrooms. The eatery even offers a special combo deal that provides customers with a calzone,

The service allows customers the opportunity to enjoy freshly-made pies delivered right to one’s door without having to fork out any delivery fees or charges. Boston’s North End Pizza delivers hot, fresh pizza seven days a week, and as Bianchi says, “You want pizza, you call us.” Back by popular demand, diners can take advantage of a special encore Hot Deals Hawaii offer that affords customers $35 worth of food and beverages for just $20. The deal is available Thursday, May 30 through Sunday, June 2 and is valid at the Kailua location only and does not apply to delivery orders. Once purchased, the deal may be redeemed through Oct. 26, 2013. Keep an eye out for new Boston’s North End Pizza Bakery innovations, including outdoor barbecues every weekend. Also, in the near future, the eatery will offer new meat-filled Italian-style sandwiches and a network of satellite locations featuring temperature- and humidity-controlled warmers from which loyal customers may pick up their favorite pizza selections.

Ige’s New Lunch Wagon at the 19th Puka
STORY BY MICHELLE LEE • PHOTOS BY NATHALIE WALKER
or years, diners from all across the island have been coming to Aiea’s famed Ige’s Restaurant & 19th Puka. Popular for its local-style, comfort food, the eatery now welcomes its customers to stop by for lunch Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Ige’s new lunch service offers a multitude of benefits for its diners. “True to what a lunch wagon is all about, the process is completely hassle-free and easy,” says Ron Ige, owner of Ige’s Restaurant & 19th Puka. “Instead of having table service, customers can come in, order their food, pour their own drinks and we will call them when the food is ready.” Equipped with multiple television screens and wide-open tables that can hold upward of 300 diners total, the restaurant serves as the ideal place for gatherings, small to large. “Our customers can pick up their food while watching television or among friends within the comforts of a spacious, air-conditioned setting,” says Ige. Similar to the dinner menu, Ige’s lunch menu features an impressive variety of express menu items with daily specials. Local favorites include Shoyu Pork ($9), a teriyaki-style roast pork glazed with a shoyu marinade, as well as Sesame Chicken Salad ($8.50), served on a bed of fresh greens and vegetables with tender grilled chicken breast in a special house-made teriyaki sauce. In addition, with the presence of a new chef, the restaurant now features fresh fish such as Fish Tofu Patties ($10), made with Aala tofu and water chestnuts. Many customers also enjoy Ige’s special Furikake Ahi ($12), which is coated and grilled to medium in a spicy teriyaki oyster sauce. “We constantly monitor the fish auction and go at least twice a week,” explains Ige. “We get the freshest catch available, and nothing is ever frozen.” In addition to self-service lunch, those interested also may use the restaurant Sesame Chicken Salad ($8.50)
to host private parties for up to 100 people. “Right now, we have a lot of calls coming in for graduation parties or work events and fundraisers,” says Ige. “We have lots of space to entertain as well as a full bar, so the restaurant works as the perfect venue for any gathering.” In harmony with the restaurant’s relaxed, easygoing attitude, Ige’s regularly hosts live entertainment and music for patrons to enjoy while dining. On Wednesdays, diners may participate in open mic night as well as listen to jazz. The eatery also features Flashback Fridays, with music and dancing from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Customers may view the entire entertainment schedule online at igesrestaurant.com. With its new lunch wagon service up and running, Ige’s hopes to open its doors to even more members of the local community. “We are a family-run operation that is dedicated to quality and customer servChef Reggie ice,” says Ige. “In all that Ramos with Shoyu Pork we do, our main focus is to serve delicious food and have a good time.”
