R

ecently, I’ve been eating like a mad woman on a rampage. And it’s not only what I’ve been eating (burgers, fries, bowls of pho, peanut butter shakes and scoops of ice cream) that’s a little fanatical, but the portion sizes of these glorious treats. I’ve been told “moderation is key” how many times, but you must understand, I’m not the type of gal that can have one bite of a heavenly dish and be satisfied. If I like something, it’s safe to say I’m going to eat it all! Last weekend, I demolished a 14ounce burger with all the fixings that quite honestly put some men to shame. So, don’t be fooled by my frame, because truth be told, I can eat like a pig.

So, let’s get down to it! What’s in store for my belly this week?

Well, my food frenzy is on a roll, so why not continue with spring rolls?

ith the comings and goings of lavish and “trendy” avant-garde cuisine, there’s a certain charm about local diners, such as Wailana Coffee House, that’s hard to come by — a lasting legacy, if you will.

As a legendary landmark in Waikiki, Wailana Coffee House is situated on the corner of Ala Moana Boulevard and Ena Road at what was once the original Kapiolani Drive Inn in the 1950s.

Fast-forward to 1969, the Wailana condominium was built, and soon enough Wailana Coffee House took the place of what was once a gathering place for locals who loved to eat.

Yet, according to Wailana Coffee House general manager Kenton Tom, the signature local flavors from Kapiolani Drive Inn have carried over to Wailana as well.

“We’re open 24 hours, and we 3 appeal to both the local market and visitors to the Islands. Here, we have good food at great values,” he says. Now, that’s a winning combination.

form more than Dad. This Father's Day (June 16), celebrate that special man in your life Wailana style, with a grand menu created especially for Dad. “We’re a family-friendly restaurant, so it’s only fitting that we celebrate the fam-

ily holidays,” Tom states. “You’ll find items on this menu that Dad will love.

We chose to feature dishes that are a bit more heartier and meatier to satisfy bigger appetites.”

Father’s Day at Wailana begins bright and early with Eggs Benedict Royal.

Priced at $10.50, this breakfast special is served from 6 a.m. to midnight and consists of toasted English muffin halves with smoked ham, turkey breast and poached eggs smothered with hollandaise sauce and served with crispy hash browns and glazed peach slices. A choice of coffee or tea also is included with the meal.

Then, as the clock strikes 11 a.m., the entire family can partake in creations from Wailana’s Father's Day special menu available until midnight.

According to Tom, New York Steak with Onion Rings ($16.95) is a definite crowd pleaser. This 8-ounce king of steaks is cooked exactly how Dad likes it and is accompanied by irresistibly savory beer-battered onion rings and sauteed mushrooms.

Next, Chicken Florentine ($13.50) is not your average chicken breast that Dad would cook up on the grill. Instead, this is a decadent presentation of tender boneless chicken breast laid on a bed of spinach and bacon, garnished with crab meat and drizzled with a rich and creamy hollandaise sauce.

If Dad prefers, a symphony of flavors from the sea, he’ll be a fan of Seafood Continental. Priced at $14.50, this mostrequested dish features a trio of shrimps, scallops and mahi mahi gently simmered in a sauce comprised of fine herbs and wine. Or, Dad may be partial to the catch of the day, which is Mahi Mahi ($11.75) served scampi style doused in a lemon garlic butter sauce and accented with a medley of mushrooms, tomatoes and onions.

All dinners include access to an allyou-can-eat salad bar, baked or mashed potatoes, french fries or steamed rice, corn on the cob, bread pudding, and coffee, tea or soft drink.

Father’s Day always calls for a toast, and Wailana does it right with a glass of Burgundy, Rose or Chablis for $3.25.

“We’ve offered our Father’s Day menu

in the past and have received a positive response from our patrons, so we're excited to see what this year has to offer,” Tom says. “We get a good mix of kamaaina families and families from out of town who dine with us on Father’s Day. It’s great!”

Service with aloha is what has made Wailana Coffee House a household name for generations, and Tom and his staff of close to 100 dedicated employees only plan to continue to offers their customers the best.

hether one stops in after an enjoyable round of golf, or simply swings by for breakfast or lunch with friends and family, Bay View Grill hits a hole in one for customers every time.

Bay View Grill overlooks Kaneohe Bay and the beautiful yet challenging Bay View Golf Course, a par-60 executive course that features three par-4 holes on both the front and back nine. The restaurant, which opened nearly a year-and-a-half ago, also is flanked by a miniature golf course as well as a zip line on the property.

“The restaurant is a foundation point for all the businesses that we have on the property,” explains Jerry Appleby, lead pastor of Windward Church of the Nazarene and executive director of Bay View Golf Park. “We really feel like it’s a great place for the community and families to enjoy. When people eat out on the lanai, kids can run around and it’s safe for them. You can enjoy the view, and it’s a very pleasant place.”

Breakfast is served from 6 to 11 a.m., and local favorites abound, including Kim Chee Portuguese Sausage ($7.35) and Ham Steak & Eggs ($7.65), which are accompanied by two extra-large eggs cooked any style and hash browns or toast, or Ono Fried Rice ($6.95) with two eggs and a choice of breakfast meat for an additional $2.95.

Diners also may reach for Pancakes ($5.95) or Blueberry or Banana Pancakes ($6.95), which include a stack of three hotcakes with an option to add three pieces of meat

for an additional $2.95.

Customers clamor for Portuguese Sausage Omelette ($7.95), Classic Ham & Cheese Omelette ($7.95) and Bay View Grill Hawaiian Omelette ($8.95), a hearty combination of Spam, Portuguese sausage, onions, mushrooms and green onions with three extra-large eggs and a choice of rice, hash browns or toast.

Bay View Grill offers satisfying sandwiches, including the one-third-pound Ground Beef Hamburger ($7.85) and Cheeseburger ($8.15) on a grilled butter bun with lettuce, tomato and special sauce. Burger fanatics also may choose from Ono Teri Burger ($8.45) and Kim Chee Teri Burger ($8.65), as well as

Get stuffed and spoiled on good eats

espite its location in bustling Chinatown and a cryptic name, HASR Bistro provides a charming oasis of food and wine. Its name comes from the acronym: Highly Allocated, Spoiled Rotten, which refers to the rare wines its wineobsessed co-owner, Terry Kakazu, is able to secure.

Kakazu is particularly interested in Napa Valley wines and receives wines directly from wineries.

She relates to the passion of boutique winemakers, for whom creating wine is more than a business. “That’s what we do here, we create food with passion,� Kakazu explains. “Chef Rodney is really passionate about what he does. He is the master of slow cooking, braising and sauces.�

Executive Chef Rodney Uyehara co-owns the eatery with Kakazu. “The beauty of everything is that you can buy wine from my wine store next door and there is no corkage fee,� says Kakazu.

So pick out a bottle, sit back with a nice glass and enjoy a full meal. Also get your fill of live music from some of Hawaii’s premier musicians six days a week.

Crabby Salmon ($25) features a fillet of Atlantic salmon stuffed with a creamy mix of Dungeness crab, mayonnaise, capers and seasonings. And while you don’t often think of paring red wine and fish, a Madeira demi-glace, made with a slightly sweet red Port-like wine, gives the dish its “backbone of flavor.� A drizzle of citrus buerre blanc balances the demi-glace and adds a touch of tang. The fish rests on a flavorful bed of lentils stewed with fresh herbs, basil, tomatoes and eggplant. The dish is gar-

nished with herbs grown right in the eatery’s window. For special occasions, such as Mother’s Day, the chef will substitute the crab with lobster. “Everyone has said it’s the best they’ve had,� says Kakazu.

Also for dinner, Roasted Stuffed Organic Chicken ($26) filled with kurobuta sausage blurts with juiciness and flavor. It’s served with the same rich demiglace and buere blanc as the Crabby Salmon, herbed pilaf and broccolini purchased right down the street in Chinatown.

eventy eight years is a long time, and in the restaurant business it's an eternity, if not a virtual impossibility. Yet through war, recession and changing food tastes, Sekiya's has survived to serve the grandchildren of the diners who first made this Kaimuki eatery an island staple of Hawaii-style comfort food.

Somewhere, enjoying either the in-house service or on-the-go okazuya, is the fourth generation of customers who may be bringing in the fifth. It's amazing, really.

There is nothing fancy about the food at Sekiya's, and that's just how the customers like it. Plus, appetizers can — and are — just about anything you like.

One of the most popular starters is Hash Tempura ($6.30 for six pieces). Made from corn beef and potatoes, this mixture is coated in tempura batter and deep-fried until crispy. How many of these dishes are ordered each day? No one seems to know, except to say, a lot!

Another best-selling item is Fried Chicken.

Starting at $1.65 per piece, the homestyle chicken is simply prepared with salt, pepper, dredged in flour and pan-fried. Pan-frying adds a dark, crispy exterior that just isn't possible with a deep frier.

Inari Sushi ($1.35), with moist vinegar rice, carrots and string beans, is another good way to begin a meal or to take with you to be enjoyed later. No surprise: The okazuya is a big draw — it always has been.

It's not possible to make a mistake ordering at this family-friendly diner, but if there is a way to look like a newbie, ordering a main dish without Namasu ($3.95) just might be it. It may be a simple dish of pickled cucumber and carrots, but a Japanese meal without this standard side is just ... well, weird.

ommitted to exceptional Cantonese fare, The Mandalay, located on Alakea Street, sure knows how to celebrate special occasions by whipping up feasts fit for hearty appetites. In fact, the restaurant boasts two stories, seating 320 people comfortably, and to top it all off, it features quite the spread of mouthwatering dishes.

Mixed Seafood with Curry in Pumpkin is a restaurant specialty and, according to owner Linda Chan, is a unique take on your traditional curry favorite.

“This dish serves 10 people and is great for dinner parties. It must be ordered at least three hours ahead of time,” Chan confirms.

A whole pumpkin is the foundation of this dish. Impressive in presentation, the seeds are removed and it’s steamed for 30 minutes so that the thick, bright orange pulp is tender and ready to enjoy.

“The cooked pulp is similar to squash, but even better,” Chan says.

“Our cook wanted to create a seafood curry for the health conscious, and this was the result. We use no MSG. The curry has been on the menu for about six months.”

A decadent seafood curry is served in the hallowed pumpkin and features morsels of shrimp, scallops and fish fillet.

Fresh vegetables, including round onions, carrots, celery, broccoli and green bell peppers, add color and flair to the dish.

The curry is mild, but can be made spicier upon request.

Chan says this dish pairs best with steamed rice.

The yellow curry is robust in flavor, consisting up coconut milk, curry powder and cornstarch for thickening, and accented with minced garlic, chili, basil, pepper, sesame seed oil and chicken powder.

hef Chai — just the name itself has a cool ring to it.

The new restaurant, named after its creator Chai Chaowasaree and located at Pacifica Honolulu on Kapiolani Boulevard, is, believe it or not, even better than the chef’s former Chai’s Island Bistro at Aloha Tower Marketplace, which closed on New Year’s Day. Chai’s Island Bistro already was an award-wining eatery with amazing Pacific Rim cuisine, service and entertainment.

So what’s different? At Chef Chai, the food is still exquisite, but the style of cooking is much healthier.

For example, dishes are prepared without butter (except for a few desserts), and with more herbs and spices. And longtime customers (Chai’s Island Bistro was open for 14 years), will be happy to know that the chef has brought over many of his signa-

ture dishes, but with slight changes that he says are better for you, such as replacing Atlantic King Salmon with Wild New Zealand King Salmon, and his famous Grilled Mahi with Thai Red Curry is now made with halibut.

“Chef Chai is Asian-fusion cuisine with an emphasis on being healthier, lighter and contemporary,” explains Chaowasaree. “To me, if all the chefs on the island cut out or reduce butter from their cooking, you would see a difference (in people’s health). It’s better for people and I think it’s the chefs responsibility. When people go

out and eat, they don’t know what they’re eating, they only know if it tastes good or not.”

According Chaowasaree, the inspiration to change the way he cooks came from his father’s passing about six years ago. His dad suffered from Alzheimer’s and as he started to lose his memory, Chaowasaree wanted to learn more about the disease and would research it online.

“It triggered the importance of a healthier diet and everything in moderation,” he says. “In the last

two or three years of my dad’s life, I don’t think he knew the difference (in his loss of memory), but it really affected the people who cared for him, and to see my family go through that was very sad.”

Everything on the menu are original creations by Chaowasaree. A popular starter is Spicy Garlic Gochujang Shrimp and Apple Kim Chee Summer Rolls ($14), featuring grilled shrimp marinated in the Gochujang Korean chili paste, and served with baby greens, radish sprouts, Granny Smith green apple kim chee in rice paper.

Stop in for happy hour from 9 p.m. to closing (the restaurant is open from 4 to 11 p.m. nightly), and enjoy a great happy hour menu with a great selection of pupu dishes that are served in the same portion as the regular menu but at half the price.

For happy hour, Chef Chai recommends Rosemary 2 Garlic Pork Tenderloin with Hoisin, Scallions in Chinese Bau Bun ($7 happy hour, $14 regular) and Fresh Ahi Tartar in Mini Waffle Cones ($8 happy hour, $15 regular), which is six bite-size pieces of ahi poke made with onions, green onions, sesame seeds, Japanese shichimi and a variety of seven chilies and sea salt, served in a flaky waffle cone with an avocado mousse at the bottom.

The ambiance of the restaurant is very modern with indoor and outdoor seating, a full bar, and a private room that can seat up to 25 people. Valet parking

is available, as well as street parking on Kapiolani Boulevard after 6:30 p.m.

“We are just very pleased with this location and proud of what we pro-

duce,” says Chaowasaree.

“I hope everybody appreciates what we are trying to do, and I hope other chefs see this and also offer healthier options.”

t’s often said that the simple things in life bring the most joy.

When it comes to the pure elation a warm, yummy meal brings, Lisa Lum and Sang Chun are clearly on to something.

The co-owners opened Happy Day Chinese Restaurant in Kaimuki 12 years ago, only to watch their base of loyal patrons grow with time. In the spirit of sharing their blissful menu of Hong Kong-style cuisine, the duo opened another location on Liliha street in 2009, and named it Nice Day Chinese Restaurant.

Home to some of the best char siu, roast pork and roast duck around, Nice Day also is known for its dim sum selection.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, the expansive main dining room comes alive with the exciting hustle and bustle of dim sum carts weaving through huge round tables filled with hungry regulars.

The recipe for having such a “nice day,” according to Lum, is as simple as putting some love into the

food. “It’s all handmade. Every day, the dim sum cook comes at five o’clock (in the morning) to start preparing,” she says.

Among the bestselling items are Half Moon ($2.68) — delightful dumplings filled with vegetables, shrimp and pork — and absolutely

scrumptious Shumai ($2.85), a must for locals.

“My favorites are Half Moon and Shumai because they are very clean and they taste very good,” adds Lum. The eatery’s slew of friendly servers also will be pleased to drop off shrimp dumplings called Har Gau ($2.85) and Deep Fried Taro ($2.85) at your table.

Or there are Chicken Buns ($2.68), which offer the fluffiest of manapua-style buns filled with a mushroom and chicken mixture, and Custard Buns ($2.68), which sweeten up your palate.

In addition to dim sum, the restaurant brightens patron’s days with a menu of 171 a la carte items that are perfect for lunch or din-

ner. Lum and Chun recommend Sea Bass Casserole ($15.95), which is prepared in oyster sauce with mushroom, fried tofu, chinese peas and nearly caramelized pieces of garlic to dress up soft fillets of sea bass. Lum says the dish is served with a burner under the plate to keep the ingredients warm and fresh at the table.

Another great a la carte item is Huk Gin Tofu ($10.95), which presents a medley of chicken, vegetables, seafood and tofu in a bamboo steamed basket. Together with Sea Bass Casserole, these dishes are among the eatery’s most healthy options.

Put simply, Nice Day Chinese Restaurant is delicious. “We just want customers to be happy and comfortable, and enjoy the food,” adds Lum.

ack in 1960, patrons who flocked to Eagles Café in downtown Honolulu’s Blaisdell Hotel on Fort Street could sit down to a New York Cut Sirloin Steak with French Fries for just $2.25.

While times have certainly changed over the 50-plus years since, diners can still find the same quality food and affordable prices at New Eagle Café. The popular eatery currently resides in Nimitz Center, conveniently situated along Nimitz Highway in the heart of one of Honolulu’s bustling business districts. “I definitely want to continue the tradition of the restaurant, and carry the torch so to speak,” Im says, when describing New Eagle Café, which specializes in local comfort food made fresh to order.

Im and the friendly staff at New Eagle Café have extended breakfast service by an additional hour, from 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday until noon daily. Tasty new dishes also grace the breakfast menu just in time for summer, including Macadamia Nut Pancakes with Coconut Cream Syrup ($5.95 for one piece, $6.95 for two pieces and $7.95 for three pieces). The fluffy hotcakes are topped with rich, chopped macadamia nuts and smothered with sweet, savory syrup.

“It’s a trend now for restaurants to offer ‘off-the-wall’ breakfast items, so I wanted to switch things up,” Im explains. “We just introduced Macadamia Nut Pancakes a few weeks ago, and it’s been very popular so far.”

Strawberry Belgian Waffle ($6.95) satisfies the senses as the large, golden brown waffle is topped with a hearty portion of whipped cream and fresh strawberries. For an extra $2, diners can make the meal a 4

combo with the addition of an egg and choice of link or Portuguese sausage, smoked ham, luncheon meat, bacon, Spam or homemade hamburger patty.

Another breakfast mainstay, French Toast ($5.75), also is popular among loyal diners.

A host of local favorites grace the breakfast menu, including Breakfast Loco Moco ($8.65).

f you're craving sushi, but don't have the time to dine at a sit-down restaurant, Kozo Sushi provides a convenient combination of sushi and speed, without compromising taste. While the quality might be right on par with sit-down establishments, the prices are different.

“We have quality items at reasonable prices so that anyone can buy our sushi,” explains Kozo Sushi owner Mika Niwa. “Customers tell us that they love Kozo Sushi because we offer good sushi in a short amount of time at a low cost.”

While there are plenty of sushi establishments to choose from, Kozo Sushi sets itself apart by coming up with a range of interesting recipes. Niwa says that the chefs at Kozo are constantly creating new dishes.

For a sample of Kozo's creative concoctions, try Dynamite Maki ($7.25), which features shrimp tempura, lettuce, teriyaki sauce, sesame seeds, ahi, masago, green onion, barbecue chips, chili sauce and wasabi mayonnaise.

Another popular option is Hurricane Maki ($7.25), a combination of jumbo fried shrimp, salmon, lettuce, green onion, sweet

Niwa says that one of Kozo's most popular items is the Kamaaina Plate ($43.99), which has an impressive array of 98 pieces of sushi. Its items include

Owner Mika Niwa says that the restaurant has created the menu based on traditional Japanese fare, as well as local influences.

“We use both Western and Japanese ingredients to create items that we think would taste good,” Niwa says. “Also, we often are influenced by both the fusion style and the traditional style in order to appeal to all of our customers.”

According to Niwa, another thing that makes Kozo Sushi stand out is its recipe for one very crucial part of good sushi — the rice.

“We have been constantly improving our rice vinegar formula,” Niwa says.

A

visit to Larry’s Bakery is like visiting a family member or friend — you look forward to sampling their best baked goods and, in this case, receive customer service that makes you feel like part of the family.

Which makes perfect sense, since Larry’s Bakery, in business since the mid’60s, has remained a family operation, currently run by Iris Yafuso-Toguchi and Lance Yafuso.

“Of course, our almostto-be-81-year-old mom still comes everyday to help us,” says Iris.

“Every day” begins at around 3 a.m.

A popular item on the menu is Manju ($1.30 each).

Okinawan sweet potato

and azuki bean filling are the classic flavors offered, paired with a homemade crust. The newest flavor, lima bean, is quickly gaining fame as well. This unique flavor has been well received, as it is lightly sweet, but not overpowering.

Another memorable favorite is Blueberry Cinnamon Bread ($6). Plus, it’s

perfect for breakfast.

“The great thing about Blueberry Cinnamon Bread is that you can slice it up and dip it in egg batter, and then make French toast with it,” says Iris.

And, of course, no one can ever forget Butter Roll Sticky Buns ($1.35 each).

This renowned item was created as a fun (and deli-

cious) way for the employees to use extra butter rolls and caramel glaze.

“Now, we can’t keep it on the shelf,” she adds.

One thing to keep in mind: You’re going to want to arrive early. Larry’s irresistible eats — especially for those with a demanding sweet tooth — draw a crowd, which sometimes leaves the bakery with empty shelves by 10 a.m.

Once you’ve had a taste, you’ll understand why.

preparation of the pork.

“We rub the pork shoulder with our 16spice rub, which has some paprika, fennel, garlic powder, cayenne, cumin, onion powder and other great spices in it,” he explains. “Then, we let the pork absorb the rub for a day and finally we smoke it for about eight hours.”

It’s a long process, but the end result is absolutely gratifying. The taste is perfectly salty and sweet — it’s like a vacation for your mouth — and the zest of the cayenne pepper is nicely revealed.

“To finish off the spring rolls, I pair it with a sweet chili sauce,” Chan says.

The flavors are bold, adding to the already “epic” dining experience.

In fact, when I mentioned to general manager Gary Chan that it was spring rolls I was after, he, along with his staff, not only presented me with the renowned Imperial Rolls with Taro & Chinese Sausage found on the menu, but Jade Dynasty also created two delectable “offthe-menu” spring rolls especially for Ono, You Know! Aren't we lucky?

Prawn Salad Spring Rolls (two rolls, $6.50), a traditional spring roll filled with diced prawns, carrots, egg whites and a bit of mayonnaise, along with Imperial Roll with Soft Shell Crab (one roll, $8.95), a unique spring roll that consists of taro with soft shell crab, are so ono and only available for a limited time.

“Our Imperial Rolls are not your average spring rolls,” Chan explains. “The spring roll wrap is not smooth, it’s flaky and fluffy, and fun to eat. Surprisingly, this new wrap is not too oily either. It’s very light.

“Imperial Roll with Soft Shell Carb and Prawn Salad Spring Rolls will be available upon request for a week starting today,” he reveals.

Thankfully, I’ll always have my fill of Im-

perial Rolls with Taro & Chinese Sausage.

Priced at $4.50 for two rolls, these rolls present morels of salty and sweet Chinese sausage (my favorite) and pieces of taro wrapped in a deep-fried, flaky crust. Simply amazing! The blend of textures and flavors is on point.

All spring rolls are available daily during dim sum hours from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Pagoda Restaurant Pagoda’s recent makeover is spiffy. Step into the Rycroft Street eatery and you’ll be met with new carpet, décor, a fresh paint job and a bar. Known for its local fare and American favorites prepared by executive chef and owner Jason Takemura, Pagoda lures in a crowd of creative diners who love dishes with extra pizazz, such as Kalua Pig and Shrimp Spring Rolls ($6) and Kalua Duck Spring Rolls ($7).

A popular appetizer among the lunch crowd, Kalua Pig and Shrimp Spring Rolls are the talk of the town, as two enormous rolls of deep-fried goodness are stuffed

with shredded kalua pig and shrimp sauteed in sesame oil and ginger. Carrots, cabbage, cellophane noodles and wood ear mushrooms are flavored with a special sauce and added to the spring rolls as well. A splash of Mandarin chili sauce composed of hints of orange juice, ginger and sesame seeds give the dish a nice kick.

You really can’t go wrong with a sweetand-sour flavor profile.

Then, come back for happy hour and dinner, and relish in Kalua Duck Spring Rolls, a succulent take on the aforementioned lunch starter.

“I’d consider this to be an upscale spring roll,” Takemura says. “We roast the duck kalua style, shred it off the bone and season it with fried garlic and hoisin sauce. I also add bean sprouts, carrots, cilantro and green onions to the roll.”

My favorite part of this dish lies in the kimchee hoisin sauce, which complements the already superb creation. Voila! It’s time to eat!

Tropics Bar & Grill has been known for its breakfast, lunch and dinner menus that feature locally made products.

With the recent unveiling of the new local-friendly menus, the establishment now is looking to revamp its dessert menu as well.

“With this menu, like all the rest of the menus at Tropics, we do try and push to use local flavors and local products,” Kealoha explains.

“The mascarpone we add in there adds a little a bit of air, it’s a little lighter, so it doesn’t sit quite as heavy,” explains chef Kapolanialaimaka Kealoha.

In celebration of the eatery’s seventh anniversary this month, Kahai Street Kitchen welcomes diners to try several new dishes on its updated menu.

Using creativity and a genuine love for cooking, the staff at Kahai Street Kitchen works hard to create dishes that are not only nostalgic, but innovative as well.

“Anyone can easily identify with our menu,” says Nao Iwata, owner of Kahai Street Kitchen. “We make food that people have been eating all their lives, but we make it taste extremely good.”

What started out as a private catering company quickly turned into a fullservice restaurant within six months.

“People would always walk by as we were prepping for events and ask us to open up, saying the food smelled

“The chip crust gives the sandwich a really nice texture and depth of flavor we know our customers will enjoy,” says Iwata.

Other popular menu items such as Panko Shrimp Stuffed Ahi Roll (market price) and Crab Crusted Opah (market price) showcase the restaurant’s dedication to using only the freshest, most flavorful ingredients.

“We don’t skimp out on quality,” he states. “We make our sauces completely from scratch and use real crab.”

Referred to by the public as the “best place for a plate lunch,” Kahai Street Kitchen continues to cultivate its natural love for cooking and making customers happy through high-quality comfort food.

“We put our heart and soul into what we do and it shows up on the plate,” says Iwata. “More than anything, that is what sets us apart.”
