t was two weeks before Christmas and all through the state, tummies were rumbling, we just couldn’t wait ...

Nothing says the holidays like morsels of my Christmas favorites, such as gingerbread, peppermint and eggnog — the list goes on! Well, guess what, Ono readers? I made my list and checked it twice to make sure I didn’t miss out on the sweetest of the season’s delights.

This week, let’s make it snow candies, marshmallows, cookies and more, and hopefully when Santa Claus comes walking through the door, this Christmas will be a merry one for all to enjoy — be sure to wrap the little one’s toys!

OK, so while I may not be an award-winning lyricist, I am certain that I’m full of holiday cheer!

Scrooge may be sickened by this sweet thought, but what’s even sweeter and more alluring is the village of gingerbread houses, populated by a bunch of gingerbread men at Larry’s Bakery.

“The holidays are such a busy time for us,” says Iris Yafuso, who owns and operates this Salt Lake bakery along with her brother Lance. “This year, for the first time, we’re offering fresh, homemade gingerbread houses in small and large sizes ($25 small, decorated/$35 large, decorated).

These decadent houses are extravagantly decorated with an assortment of candies and treats, including M&M’s, candy canes, marshmallows and even your favorite cereal. Larry’s Bakery can cater the decorations to what you desire.

A royal icing, which is like an edible glue, is used to construct the houses.

And when it comes to the art of gingerbread houses, constructing them is the most fun of all — the whole family can get involved.

“We also have plain houses available ($15 small/$25 large), where you can decorate it yourself. I know a lot of people are going to want to take part in that, and we’ll include frosting on the side,” she adds, noting that the gingerbread houses will already be built, leaving you with a blank canvas per se, to adhere your own candies.

Gingerbread is one of those things that is unique to Christmas, and it has that magical way about it that gets everyone into the holiday spirit! The aroma of gingerbread alone is delicious, and it’s a lot of fun to work with.

So, what exactly is gingerbread comprised of? Well, according to Lance, a baking expert, it’s all about perfect distributions of ground ginger powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, flour, molasses and honey, thus resulting in a tantalizing holiday treat.

Larry’s Bakery also offers a vast selec-

tion of gingerbread men that are readily available either decorated or plain.

Prices range from $1.50 to $4, depending on size and decoration of the cookie.

y now, the inviting aroma of fresh pine trees fill the air, Christmas shopping is well under way, and spirits are bright with holiday cheer. In the spirit of giving, Zippy’s Restaurants also gives to you hungry diners an elaborate selection of holiday delights to choose from. Dining Out most recently paid a visit to Zippy’s Waiau, where we met with Zippy’s marketing manager Jeanine Mamiya-Kalahiki who revealed just what puts that extra sparkle in the eatery’s holiday magic!

DO: Coming off a successful Thanksgiving, what does Zippy’s Restaurants have in store for the rest of the holiday season?

Mamiya-Kalahiki: The holiday season is always a busy one because of the many parties and gatherings; but Zippy’s has great holiday specials that can be enjoyed by everyone — some of them, we’ve offered for years.

DO: Zippy’s Pupu Platters are a convenient option that can easily be referred to as the “life of the party,” correct?

Mamiya-Kalahiki: Yes, our popular pupu platters are holiday favorites. We have four pupu platters to choose from including Zippy’s Local Favorites Platter ($26.95*), Chicken Katsu ($20.95*) Korean Fried Chicken ($29.95*) and Fried Noodles ($22.95*). The Local Favorites Platter is actually our bestseller and features good portions of teriyaki beef, mahi mahi, chicken katsu, hot dog and Portuguese sausage. People have been ordering these platters for tailgate parties — all parties in general — for years.

DO: Sounds delicious! Local comfort food at its best! And what’s a holiday party

without a variety of sushi? Can Zippy’s cater to all your sushi needs as well?

Mamiya-Kalahiki: Yes, Zippy’s Restaurants has a special Holiday Sushi Platter that’s available during the entire month of December (all orders must be placed 48 hours in advance). Our sushi platter is enough to feed the whole family, presenting you with 40 pieces of maki, 12 pieces cucumber, 12 pieces takuan and 10 pieces of inari sushi. These sushi platters also are a hit for the new year, so select locations (Ala Moana, Kahala, Kaneohe, Kapolei, Makiki, Mililani, Pearlridge, Vineyard and Waiau) will be open Jan. 1 for pick-up.

DO: Speaking of the new year, does Zippy’s plan to ring in 2012 with any tasty dishes?

Mamiya-Kalahiki: Of course! We have many wonderful treats made especially for the new year that our customers love. For example, we have the sushi platter, (mentioned above), in addition to other local Japanese favorites such as Konbu Maki (six pack, $7.15) consisting of pork, carrot and gobo wrapped with konbu and

kanpyo, and our Namasu. Namasu is highly requested and sold as a Zip Meal (2 pounds, $11.95) or a barrel (7 pounds, $36.95) with Japanese pickled vegetables, including cucumber, carrots and daikon. We also take away the hassle of making Nishime at home.

Now, our Chicken Nishime (2 pounds, $11.95) or a barrel (7 pounds, $36.95) is great for New Year’s Day — this Japanese stew is simmered with chicken, konyaku, carrots, sataimo (taro balls), renken (lotus root), gobo, bamboo shoots and shiitake mushrooms, simmered in an Osaka-style broth.

These items can be pre-ordered, and pick-up is scheduled for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day at select locations (Kapolei, Vineyard, Makiki, Waiau, Ala Moana, Pearlridge, Kaneohe, Kahala and Mililani).

DO: That in itself is a great start to the new year! What is the process for payment and pick-up for all of these delicious holiday items?

Mamiya-Kalahiki: Payment is required to place your order, and the last day to pre-order our New Year’s items is Dec. 26 for Oahu. You can

order online by clicking on the “New Year’s Specials” link on our website zippys.com. Online ordering is available for Oahu pick-ups only.

For your convenience, you also may pre-order with a credit card by calling 973.0880 — orders will be taken from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through Dec. 26. Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted. You can pay in person at the various locations, as well, where New Year’s items will be available for pick-up (Kapolei, Vineyard, Makiki, Waiau, Ala Moana, Pearlridge, Kaneohe, Kahala and Mililani).

eneral manager Katie Nguyen has a recommended must-try for new customers to Shakey’s Pizza Parlor — the chicken. That’s right. The boss at the family-friendly pizza restaurant wants everyone to know how good its chicken is.

Pizza? Everyone knows Shakey’s pizza, but the chicken appetizers are tasty, juicy and burdened with too much sauce that hides flavors and make the joysticks in the game room hard to handle. She may be on to something.

The wings come in four-, eightand 12-piece sizes and range from $5.99 to $15.99. Topped with ranch dressing and a Dr. Pepper barbecue sauce, the wings are crispy and a little sweet. If tempted, you can turn up the heat with a dip into the Budweiser Hot and Spicy Sauce. The combination wings fit perfect with the restaurant’s patrons. Keiki will enjoy the sweet coating, and with just a dunk it becomes an adult-themed meal starter that will have you sweating.

A nice selection to go along with the wings is the Mojo Supreme ($9.99), a potato version of nachos that has everything a spud needs. Bacon, Cheddar and mozzarella cheese, olives and onions are placed on the bountiful slices, with salsa and sour cream on the side. Nguyen says the potato and wings partnership has been strong since they opened.

“A lot of families like to come in and order the wings and Mojo Supreme,” she says. “They taste great and are fun to eat.”

If you like your pupus comparable to a complete meal — and who

doesn't? — the Golden Fried Chicken with Mojo Potatoes ($9.49 for four pieces and $18.99 for eight) is a good choice. Not only is the serving size large but the chicken is delicious. Seriously.

This is perhaps the juiciest chicken I’ve ever had. Each order of the proprietary chicken — meaning the birds are found only at Shakey’s — is individually cooked, so there is no heat lamp to sap flavor and moisture.

One final pupu suggestion is something customers themselves have created. Pizza and football just go together, and thoughtful fans have figured out that bite-sized pieces of their favorite Italian pie just work better in party settings. So they ask for an alteration.

“We have a lot of people who come in and ask us to cut their pizza into small pieces, which we are happy to do,” says Nguyen.

There ya go. Finger food just for the asking and the smiling faces of keiki.

e all dance to a different drummer — and that goes for hungry Dining Out readers as well. Not to sound like a broken record, but the trick for restaurateurs to keep business humming along is to meet or exceed customers’ expectations by tuning in to their dietary preferences.

“We understand people who don’t eat meat,” replies Kaew Anuttsara, owner-chef of Kaew’s Thai Villa, when asked if there are any meat- and fishfree options on the menu.

She’s playing our song.

Her menu touts “Healthy Thai Food,” which means using only the freshest ingredients, light oil and no MSG. Anuttsara’s commitment is apparent, as she offers brown rice, which is cooked up fresh every day, and she sings the praises of “a very healthy rice noodle” in her soups (but, alas, uses chicken broth).

But stay tuned, because there’s so much more than soup here.

The curry, served with Thai jasmine or brown rice (add 50 cents for sticky rice), can be ordered mild, medium or hot, and, in this case, includes sliced tofu marinated in green curry sauce made with non-sweetened coconut milk, as well as kaffir lime leaf, basil, peas and eggplant.

Since the tofu option comes with more vegetables, those can be included as well.

So this Green Curry is not only packed with flavor, but it’s good for you, too. And at $7 for lunch, $8 for dinner, you’re getting it for a song.

“When guests first arrive, we do pass appetizers,” says Chaowasaree. “We walk around with small, bite-sized appetizers, and then they (guests) sit down and have a salad, entrée and dessert.”

Patisserie La Palme D’or Christmastime is here at Patisserie La Palme D’or! Located at Ala Moana Center, this classy pastry shop intrigues my sweet tooth with its full-fledged philosophy to blend French flavor and Japanese craftsmanship, which in my mind truly equates to impeccable taste. This is all thanks to owner Hiromi Tanaka and her dedicated staff, including head chef Akiko Kimura.

Upon my most recent visit to La Palme D’or, it was as if it was Christmas morning, when chef Akiko presented me with her newest Chocolate Mint Cake ($4.50 per slice, $45 for whole cake). I guarantee you that this cake is Santa-approved and will save you from waking up to a stocking full of coal this year. Imagine a

smooth peppermint mousse atop a light combination of chocolate sponge cake filled with decadent chocolate mousse and chocolate pearls. And if this isn’t enough, chef Akikio has adorned this masterpiece with chocolate macaroons as well, while topping it off with a hot chocolate spread on the cake’s outermost layer. Oh, night divine!

And especially made for the holidays, the establishment’s Bouche de Noel features a delicious chocolate cream wrapped in a fluffy vanilla chiffon sponge cake ($44 small, $50 medium). Eggs ‘n Things Waikiki Beach Eggspress, which opened its doors last week, serves up the same quality food in a fast-paced setting. Located on Kalakaua Avenue, the Eggspress is right across from Waikiki Beach and has a spectacular view of the ocean.

“The idea is that it is an express-style,” explains general manager Michael Skedeleski of the new venue.

ggs ‘n Things has been a mustgo destination for decades, reeling in droves of tourists and locals alike with a varied menu that features traditional American breakfast foods with local favorites.

The restaurant was opened in 1974 by Jerry and Jan Fukunaga, a husband-and-wife team who had a passion for making tasty food with fresh ingredients. Jerry was a fisherman, and he started out by serving the fish that he would catch. Both Jerry and Jan were very health-conscious, which influenced the way they created their dishes.

“They always put a healthy spin on many of the dishes,” says general manager Michael Skedeleski. “Their goal was to serve quality food with the spirit of Aloha.”

Those founding ideals have carried over through the years, as the restaurant continues to use fresh ingredients.

“Pretty much whatever we get delivered that day goes out that day, including our eggs and produce,” Skedeleski says.

While keeping in touch with its roots, the restaurant also strives for innovation, as well. Currently, Eggs ‘n Things chefs are in the process of creating new dishes, including seasonal fish dishes and a chicken dish for dinner. Plus, Eggs ‘n Things has a set of rotating specials, including the Fresh Papaya Sour Cream Crepe ($12.95).

Today, in honor of the Honolulu Marathon, Eggs ‘n Things offers protein shakes available in a variety of flavors, including Banana Peanut Butter, Pineapple Banana and Strawberry Banana ($5 each). Today’s special is a Tofu Vegetable Omelet ($11.95).

ooking for a hot, delicious and healthy dinner to warm you up on a cool December evening? Hanaki Restaurant, located in Manoa Marketplace, provides the perfect solution for you with its shabu shabu dining options.

“Shabu shabu is a great wintertime meal that’s healthy but tastes good,” says manager Mark Mitsuyoshi. “The soups are nice, hot and healthy for you.”

Although Hanaki Restaurant first opened in 1996 and was famous for its buffet menu, the eatery has since changed to shabu shabu dining last May. Although the majority of customers choose the shabu shabu dining option, Hanaki still provides an a la carte menu, featuring popular items from its buffet menu, such as shrimp tempura, chicken kara age and misoyaki butterfish.

The goal behind Hanaki’s change to shabu shabu was to provide family-friendly, healthy dining for customers.

“We wanted to have a family restaurant and to

have good-tasting food that’s affordable (at Hanaki),” says Mitsuyoshi. “Hanaki provides a great environment for both a family dinner and for a fast lunch too, as shabu shabu dining does not take very long. Our shabu shabu has a great variety of different, fresh, locally grown vegetables, sliced meats and seafood.”

The shabu shabu dining option is perfect for families with children, as Mitsuyoshi states that the restaurant provides a family-friendly dining atmosphere, and shabu shabu itself provides children with nutritious meals.

“Your family can receive all the vegetable servings they need and the average price (per customer) is $12 to $13,” Mitsuyoshi says. “Each stove can do one soup or two at the same time. If you can’t decide which one (soup base) to choose, you can get two.

Hanaki provides a complete shabu shabu experience,” he adds. “We have many types of soup bases, starches, meats, vegetables and even desserts to choose from.

There’s always something for everyone.”

An additional bonus: Shabu shabu dining does not result in the bloated feeling one usually experiences after overeating at Christmas buffets.

“It’s (shabu shabu) a healthy, balanced meal,” Mitsuyoshi explains. “You won’t have to worry about holiday overeating (because shabu shabu is nutritious).”

Upon choosing the shabu shabu option, customers must first select the soup base of their choice ($5). Soup flavors range from Miso (medium, traditional, Japanese soybean paste) and the Konbu (a light, seaweedbased udon soup) to the Sukiyaki, a heavier soup

with sugar and shoyu.

Customers can choose a variety of ingredients to add to their soup once they select the base. Each of these ingredients — a variety of vegetables, meats and seafood — are located in plates or bowls color-coded by price.

“We list our prices by container because it’s easy to understand; we have such a large variety of items,” says Mitsuyoshi. “Our green bowls are $2.50, our red bowls are $3.50 and plates are $4.50.”

Among the most popular vegetable choices are baby bak choy and Chinese cabbage. Clams, baby octopus and lobster balls are popular seafood choices among

customers, and prime rib tends to be frequently chosen among the different meat dishes.

“We have more than 40 different kinds of vegetables and more than 35 types of meat and seafood to choose from,” Mitsuyoshi says.
