Dining Out//Cover Story//Sekiya’s Restaurant & Delicatessen
Saimin (small $4.95)
The quaint neighborhood of Kaimuki is known for its red dirt, vast number of hills and small-town charm. Take a stroll through the neighborhood with any old-time resident and you’ll soon notice that Kaimuki hasn’t changed much over the years. In fact, you’ll continue to find many small businesses that have been serving the community for generations, including Sekiya’s Restaurant & Delicatessen, the place to go for all of your local Japanese favorites.
Located across from Kaimuki High School, Sekiya’s has been a staple in the East Oahu community for more than 75 years, and owner Joy Morihara attributes quality food and loyal customers as the secret to its longevity. “Sekiya’s opened in 1935, and this is our third location, to be exact. We started out on School Street as a tiny okazuya, then we relocated to Kapahulu, and eventually to Kaimuki in 1955, and we’re still here today,” she says with a laugh. “We offer the same local food that we’ve been offering for generations. Our customers have been eating here since they were kids, and we’ve generated quite a following. We’re very appreciative of their continuous support.”
Sekiya’s was founded by Morihara’s grandparents Taisuke and Katsuko Sekiya, and today, Morihara, along with her aunt Doris Hara, spearhead this familyowned business, which comfortably seats 88 diners respectfully and has 40 employees on staff. “All of our employees have been working here for ages, and even though we’re not related it feels like one big family,” Morihara says. “We have several chefs as well, all of whom have been employed here for a long time.” Well, Sekiya’s must be doing something right. According to Morihara, the menu hasn’t changed much since the beginning, with the exception of a few add-ons here and there. Sekiya’s classics include full-course meals
of the ever-popular Marinated Fried Chicken ($12.95), Oxtail Soup ($13.95), Beef Sukiyaki ($14.95) and Beef Teriyaki ($11.95), to name a few, all served with miso soup, rice, tsukemono and hot tea. “Marinated Fried Chicken will always be a mainstay on our menu and features tender chicken thigh soaked to perfection in a light Teriyaki sauce, floured and deep-fried. It also comes with a daikon sauce that’s very tasty,” she explains. “Beef Sukiyaki also is very delicious with shiitake mushroom, tofu, round onion, makina, green onion, gobo and itokonyaku.” But what always keeps customers coming back time and time again is Sekiya’s signature saimin.
Beef Sukiyaki ($14.95) 4 | DINING OUT | JAN. 29-FEB. 4, 2012
The soup base is made from scratch with dried shrimp base, konbu and chicken — so don’t be surprised if you slurp up every last drop. Sekiya’s accommodates all appetites with small ($4.95), large ($6.95) and extra large ($8.95) portions to choose from. Morihara says most people prefer to keep it simple, topping off their saimin with only char siu and green onions. Bean sprouts can be added for 70 cents and vegetables cost $1.20 more. And regulars to the eatery know that a bowl of saimin isn’t complete without a BBQ Stick ($1.95) on the side. Sekiya’s saimin repertoire also includes Fried Saimin ($7.15), Karai Saimin ($7.95) and Crispy Saimin ($2.25). “Our saimin is prepared the oldfashioned way,” Morihara states. “It’s local, home-cooked

saimin, and that’s hard to come by these days. “Most of the items on our menu are derived from family recipes which have been developed over the years, and they haven’t changed — the taste and quality remain consistent.” Sekiya’s is open daily, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Patrons also can take advantage of the okazuya from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day. “If you’re on the go, you can always pick up something from the okazuya. We offer everything from Inari sushi, nori maki, musubi, fried noodles, chow fun noodles, barbecue meat, butterfish, shoyu hot dogs, tempura and more,” Morihara says. “Prices range from 55 cents to $3, and things sell out relatively quickly because there’s something for everyone.” You could say the food speaks for itself at Sekiya’s. The atmosphere is comfortable, casual and unpretentious, in which diners can simply seat themselves. Yet, take note of the outdoor fishpond at the rear of the restaurant, because there’s more to it than meets the eye. “My grandfather always had a fishpond wherever he lived, so it was only fitting to also have one at the restaurant,” Morihara explains. “The kids who come by love to feed the koi in the pond, and the fishpond is believed to bring about good luck and good fortune.” Take it as you will, but perhaps the fishpond has played a role in Sekiya’s continued success.
However, Morihara says, more importantly, business sustainability has to do with the quality of the food. “We serve home-cooked food, there’s nothing instant about it, and people like the taste of it too. It’s good local-style food which everyone enjoys.” And we couldn’t agree more. There’s just something so comforting about a good old-fashioned hamburger served with a hearty bowl of saimin — a local take on the Americanized soup and sandwich combo. Add a side order of Hash Tempura ($5.70, six pieces; 95 cents for each additional piece) to that, and it’s a match made in heaven. Finally, why not end your meal on a sweet note with Sekiya’s Orange Freeze ($4.95) or Hot Fudge Sundae ($5.95). “I’ve seen generations of people grow up here. Some went to school at Kaimuki High School, and some customers will come as far as Mililani or North Shore to eat here. Our customer base is pretty amazing,” Morihara says with a smile. “We have some people who eat here every day; it’s very nice for us. And every so often we will get new customers drifting in, and they seem to like it, too.” At a place where continuity is key, Morihara has high hopes for the future of Sekiya’s. “I hope that we can keep on cooking for many more years to come, and keep on serving our customers as well as their children and grandchildren.” Simple comfort food is what it’s all about.

Pupus with a view at Tropics Bar & Grill

Tropics Bar & Grill Where: Hilton Hawaiian Village Ground floor, Alii Tower 2005 Kalia Road, Honolulu
f the idea of pupus on the beach is not enough to entice a trip into Waikiki, the appetizer menu at Tropics Bar & Grill at Hilton Hawaiian Village just may do it. Poke, shrimp, nachos, whatever, just taste better when the view includes the glittering ocean, smooth trade winds, bikini and surf short-clad beachgoers, and, at least for this week, a never-ending array of “is that who I think it is?” Pro Bowl invitees and alumni. Coconut Crusted Shrimp ($15) is a perfect accompaniment to the visual and audible pleasures of Waikiki. Big, crispy, sweet and juicy, with a side of lemon and a slightly spicy mango cocktail sauce — it’s not just great finger food but great food period. Ahi Tuna Poke ($14) is another seaside favorite. Made with sashimi-grade ahi that is brought in fresh each morning, the creamy fish is mixed with shoyu, Maui onion, hijiki, toasted sesame seeds, chili flakes and garnished with watercress to add a nice visual effect, and to
signal to others that the Island favorite has arrived. Not enough fish? Check out Furikake & Beer-Battered Fish & Chips ($17). The fish is light, the batter crispy and the seasoned fries, are, well, crazy good. Tropics Nachos ($15) made with fresh tortilla chips, sour cream, salsa, guacamole, jalapenos, Cheddar cheese and kalua pork is a popular choice, and sloweating enough to provide ample viewing time. 1 Waikiki is too often a missed treasure for many local diners, and that’s too bad. The views from Tropic’s lanai
are just superb and Brick Oven Pizzas delicious. Nice segue, huh? Tropics offers five thin-crust and tasty choices, including Hawaiian, Margherita, Italian Sausage and Pepperoni, and Bacon and Bleu Cheese. However, if I were to pick just one, it would be Fire Grilled Chicken & Mushroom ($16). This pizza features grilled chicken, Hamakua mushrooms, Big Islandmade goat cheese and a basil pesto, and it was almost enough to make me forget the coworkers I was dining with. Who am I kidding? I dismissed them the minute the first appetizer crossed the table. I ended up walking home. But it was worth it.

A wide variety of Rainbow Drive-In’s famous plate lunches.
hen Seiju and Ayako Ifuku opened Rainbow Drive-In just off Kapahulu Avenue in 1961, their goal was to offer up food geared toward the working class and beach crowd. The couples’ philosophy was to serve plate lunches featuring ample portions of simple but delicious food accompanied by two scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad — and all at reasonable prices. More than 50 years later, the tradition continues as kamaaina and visitors flock from around the island and the world to eat at Rainbow Drive-In. Fittingly, Rainbow’s Kapahulu location serves as a link between customers of multiple backgrounds. On a recent visit, the line at the eatery’s order window included tourists from Japan and Canada, visitors from the Mainland, a few construction workers taking a break from the sweltering heat, and former University of Hawaii turned Oakland Raiders football player Samson Satele, who was in town for Pro Bowl festivities. As Rainbow Drive-In vice president Jim Gusukuma puts it, “we have a great mix of customers, from construction workers to office workers, and look at the amount of tourists we have here. It’s a great mix, and it kind of represents all the colors of the rainbow, and that’s what we’re all about. We’re so proud that we can appeal to a great cross-section of customers.” Little has changed in the 50-plus years since Rainbow Drive-In began pumping out popular plates. After all, why mess with recipes that have been shared with multiple generations of diners? The only noticeable alteration to the iconic eatery can be found at its menu display, where digital screens have replaced the old static and hand8 | DINING OUT | JAN. 29-FEB. 4, 2012
written menu boards. But don’t worry, the menu items and recipes haven’t changed a bit, Gusukuma insists. “We just completed our 50th anniversary celebration in October, 2011, and going forward, we intend to be around for the next 50 years so we’ve modernized a little bit,” says Gusukuma, the son-in-law of the establishment’s owners. “If you come down to Rainbow Drive-In, you’ll notice that we have replaced our static menus with digital boards; we used to use hand-written dry erase boards for our specials, but now we feature a revolving digital board. Even though we’ve done some things to modernize, our food is still the same, original recipes, the Ifuku family still owns and operates the restaurant and we haven’t changed the food or its presentation one bit.” Following a brief absence because of a lack of supply and soaring prices, mahi mahi recently made its return to the Rainbow menu at the start of the new year. Customers may indulge in favorites including Mahi Plate ($8.25), which features tender, juicy pieces of fish with tartar sauce and Mahi Sandwich ($4.50). “I don’t know why there was a
shortage, but I do know that mahi mahi was difficult if not impossible to get,” Gusukuma says. “And, if you could get it, it was so expensive that we decided not to serve it because one of the things Rainbows is known for is good value. At the time, mahi was very popular, but the cost-per-plate would have been too high for us. So, we substituted ahi and katsu-ed it, and while customers enjoyed it, the majority of them expected mahi and wanted it back. After the first of the year, we were able to secure some mahi mahi at a more-reasonable price and we are offering it again. We’re happy to do it, too.” Mahi is also a major component of the eatery’s most popular plate, Mix Plate ($7.75). The heaping helping features mahi mahi, teriyaki barbecue beef and boneless chicken all perched atop the standard two scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. Boneless Chicken ($7) is another local favorite, and comes smothered with brown gravy. “Our Mix Plate is the most popular plate,” says Gusukuma as he offers advice to a first-time customer who was in awe of all the tasty offerings from which to choose. “It’s kind of a
sampler, so it has mahi mahi fillet, teriyaki beef and our boneless chicken cutlet. Boneless Chicken is our second most popular plate, and it comes with brown gravy. Although Mix Plate is the most popular, Boneless Chicken is not far behind.” Customers also return for other local favorites including BBQ Pork ($7.25), which features a marinade that has been used since the store originally opened, as well as Chili Plate ($6). Rainbow chili has become so popular that the restaurant now sells individual chili mix packets so customers can make and enjoy the dish at home. Hawaiian Style Chili Seasoning and Rub ($4.95) is available at the RainbowTiki store located next door to the restaurant, and Gusukuma suggests using the powder as both a seasoning as well as a dry rub for spicing grilled meat. The store also offers everything under the proverbial rainbow, from T-shirts and hats to bags and gift cards. And, as a special scoop for Dining Out readers, Gusukuma announced that customers will soon be able to purchase packets of Rainbow’s famous brown gravy and pancake mix. Stop by the RainbowTiki store after ordering a plate for more details. “We’re grateful that our customers have allowed us to be here for the last 50 years, and we really, really appreciate it,” says Gusukuma as he smiles while watching customers dig into their plate lunches. “If you’ve been here before, you know that we try to keep our prices as low as possible, and give quick service while serving good food. That’s the secret to our success. If we didn’t have the customers who continually support us, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.”

ince Sakura Terrace opened on South King Street in November, it has already become a local hot spot known for fresh seafood and affordable yet upscale Japanese fare. Its name references the sakura, or cherry blossom, which blooms each spring for a fleeting moment, leaving many eager to catch a glimpse of the flower’s immense beauty. Holding an array of symbolisms, the sakura brings new beginnings, just as its namesake ventures into new culinary frontiers with irresitable hot items — all served on hot plates and available briefly, like the blossom itself. Locals fell in love with the eatery’s instant hits such as Sakura Chirashi Sushi Don and Spicy Ahi Don. And before long, you

lue Hawaii is not your average sushi place. In addition to head chef Bronson Lizares’ delicious Japanese creations — including Sixty-Nine Roll ($15), Rainbow Roll ($15) and Chirashi Bowl ($11.95) — the friendly Pearl City spot recently added internationally inspired menu items. Sink your teeth into the Party Platter ($21), a remarkable deal with two bacon-wrapped asparagus spears, two ebi fry, two kaki fry, three mussels, sautéed mushrooms, and sweet chili and katsu sauces. Stuffed Chicken Wings ($7.95 alone) steal the sharable platter’s spotlight with a perfectly seasoned Thai filling of ground pork, long rice, carrots, fish sauce, garlic and spices. Management partner Emerson Ribao’s inspiration for expanding the menu stems from his desire to give customers the dining experience they want. “I go around the tables and

will delight in Sakura Steak ($15) as well, featuring 8 ounces of sautéed USDA Choice Steak. Marketing director Marilyn Cariaga suggests dipping the succulent meat into a mixure of ponzu sauce and grated daikon with a touch of Japanese pepper for a twist. The dish also comes with asparagus, shiitake mushrooms, red and yellow peppers, rice, miso soup and wasabi. As tasty as the spring bloom is beautiful, Sakura Nimono ($7) is a hard-tofind appetizer including boiled daikon, shaped into a cherry blossom and filled with chopped shrimp. The mixture is simmered in a soy, mirin and sake sauce along with a medley of Japanese fishcake, konnyaku, shiitake mushroom and quail eggs. The comfortably modern dining space, complete with indoor and outdoor seating, as well as chic interior design, serves up other sizzling appetizers such as Broiled Ika (whole) and Japanese Barbecue Ribs, both priced at $9. Black Tiger Shrimp ($9) is sautéed in a butter sauce, and topped with garlic chips and a side of broccoli. For an elegant lunch or romantic dinner, take in Sakura’s flowering menu before the season changes.

Paesano Ristorante Italiano Indulge in the vast flavors of Italia at Paesano Ristorante Italiano. With a location in Waimalu Plaza Shopping Center and another in Manoa Marketplace, this cozy establishment has made a name for itself within both communities. “Many people celebrate special occasions here, such as birthday parties and anniversaries,” says owner Billy Rattanasamay. And I couldn’t agree more. I’ve celebrated many of lifes precious moments at this renowned establishment, and Paesano also has been my go-to restaurant of choice whenever a craving for authentic Italian cuisine strikes. Therefore, in the mood for elaborate pasta adorned with an abundance of mushrooms, I knew Paesano was my best bet, with more than 80 pasta dishes gracing the menu. Imagine Mushrooms with Peppers Saute, Linguine served with a savory garlic mushroom sauce, and an alluring entree of Chicken alla Saltimboca Romana. Is your mouth
watering yet? Mine is! Vegetarians will love Paesano’s onolicious appetizer of Mushrooms with Peppers Saute ($10.90), a blend of button mushrooms, mixed bell peppers and grilled slivers of onion sauteed with garlic olive oil. Then let the mushroom magic continue with Chicken alla Saltimboca Romana ($18.90 small, $22.90 regular). This entree consists of a mound of fresh linguine pasta served with breaded chicken thighs, spinach, mozzarella cheese and proscuitto ham doused with a tasty white wine, light butter, button mushroom sauce. Or, if chicken isn’t your cup of tea, and you’d rather let the fungi shine through on its very own, why not opt for your choice of pasta with mushroom sauce ($15.90 small, $18.90 regular)? Choose from linguine, fettucine or rigatoni topped with a succulent marinara or garlic sauce, enhanced with button mushrooms and sauteed in a light butter and white wine sauce.

anaki Restaurant in Manoa has been a local favorite since 1996, and since introducing its shabu shabu options, the restaurant has become a haven for foodies looking for quality do-it-yourself dining. “We have liked shabu shabu for many years now, and we have wanted to do something like this for a while,” says Hanaki general manager Mark Mitsuyoshi. Wanting to share its love of shabu shabu, Hanaki began offering shabu shabu two years ago. One of the best parts of shabu shabu is that each individual can cater the dish to their own preferences. “You can create exactly what you you want to eat,” he says, adding that the most popular ingredients include sliced prime rib, pork loin, lamb, fishcake, stuffed aburage, pork tsukune, udon noodles and enoki mushrooms. “Shabu shabu is a fun and easy way to have a great and healthy lunch or dinner,” says Mitsuyoshi. Additionally, Hanaki tries to use fresh produce from local vendors when possible. Not only is Hanaki’s shabu shabu healthy and tasty, but it’s also convenient. “Shabu shabu is great for a quick lunch,” Mitsuyoshi explains. “Pick your soup, choose your food — it just takes a few minutes, and you’re ready to eat. No waiting. It’s easy.” With its spacious dining room, Hanaki also is perfect for family gatherings, as well as quick lunches. “It’s a very good place for family meals,” Mitsuyoshi says. “Kids can easily get all their nutrition in a meal, while having fun doing it.”

lthough tucked away in quiet Manoa Valley, Hanaki Restaurant has been drawing in the customers with favorites like Chicken Udon ($11.95) and Shrimp Tempura Donburi ($11.95) and, of course, shabu shabu. Located in Manoa Marketplace, Hanaki is a great place to stop by for a lunch break or enjoy a family dinner. “We specialize in shabu shabu meals, but we also continue to provide our Shrimp Tempura ($4.50 for a side order), Chicken Karaage ($4.50 for a side order) and Misoyaki Butterfish ($4.50 for a side order) that everybody loves,” explains general manager Mark Mitsuyoshi. These dishes also are available as options for Combination Plates (two-choice plate for $9.95; three-choice plate for $12.95). One popular Combination Plate is the two-choice plate with Shrimp Tempura and Chicken Karaage. All Combination Plates are served with rice and miso soup. Other popular a la carte items are Teriyaki Chicken ($4.50 for a side order), Crispy Gau 18 | DINING OUT | JAN. 29-FEB. 4, 2012
Gee ($4.50 for a side order), and a variety of ramen, udon and donburi dishes. Try the new Spicy Beef Ramen for $12.95. The shabu shabu option provides an array of soups, herbs, vegetables, meat and seafood to choose from — and an opportunity to cook up everything yourself. Customers can select any combination of ingredients. The cost of a shabu shabu meal depends on individual selections, but Mitsuyoshi says the average price per person is $13 or more, adding that prices for shabu shabu meals tend to be lower per person with larger groups. First, diners start by choosing a soup. Soup flavors include Miso, Beef, and Seafood, which is a light, shio-based soup with an onion flavor. Other options are Curry, which is a heavy, creamy soup flavored with coconut milk, and Spicy, which is a strong, beef-based flavor. There’s also Konbu, which is a light soy sauce-based udon soup, and Sukiyaki has a strong soy sauce and sweet sugar flavor. You also can choose from a variety of herbs, including goji berries, dried dates, gin-

foodiefare seng and more for $9. “Each soup has a pretty strong fan base,” Mitsuyoshi says. The next step is to choose some vegetables, meat or seafood — or all three — to add to the soup. These are grouped together in different containers. Green bowls cost $2.50, red bowls $3.50, and plates cost $4.50. Customers can choose tasty ingredients such as beef, squid, tofu, lobster, shrimp, shiitake mushrooms and more. Plus, rice, tea or desserts, including cake, are priced at $1.50. Apart from shabu shabu, Mitsuyoshi says that the udon dishes are customer favorites. “Many customers enjoy these dishes. They have the traditional soup flavor, with a variety of types to choose from. These are big bowls and they taste great.” Udon options include A wide array of
Fishcake & Egg Udon or Ramen ($11.95), which includes different types of fishcake, egg and vegetables, and Chicken Udon or Ramen ($11.95), which features thinly sliced chicken with fishcake and vegetables. Other options include Beef Udon or Ramen ($11.95) and Shrimp Udon or Ramen ($11.95). Reservations are welcome, and there is plenty of free parking in Manoa Marketplace. Please note that prices are subject to change without prior notice.

L
ooking for a familyfriendly restaurant with a homey atmosphere, serving up some of Hawaii’s most sought-out local favorites? Check out the recently opened Ert’s Grill, located in Aiea Town Square. The eatery, which opened last August, is co-owned by Stephen (Steve) Ichioka and Clyde Higa, who highlight its originality. “The main thing that we emphasize is the way we cook and serve is with love or aloha,” Ichioka says. “Everything is homemade. This restaurant is named for my brother Robert, who passed away in 2010 … he used to tell everybody, ‘My brother can cook.’”
Prior to opening Ert’s Grill, Ichioka and Higa were partners along with some other individuals in Blazin’ Steaks. Opening their own restaurant was an accomplishment, in a sense, as being a part of Blazin’ Steaks “fueled the fire” to start their own company. “It (being partners in Blazin Steaks) was a small taste of what we could do, so after that, we opened up this place,” Ichioka says. At Ert’s Grill, customers can choose between breakfast entrées (meat choices include bacon, Spam, Portuguese sausage, Vienna sausage and hot dog), sandwiches and plate lunches (served with two scoops of
Ert's co-owner and chef Stephen Ichioka
white or brown rice and a choice of corn, macaroni salad or tossed salad). When it comes to the eatery’s signature dishes, Ichioka says the most popular would be Homemade Hamburger Steak ($5 mini; $7.50 regular), in which the patties are homemade. Smoked Meat with Onions ($8), currently a Friday special, also is popular. Another highly requested entrée at Ert’s Grill is Eric’s Homemade Chili ($4 for bowl, $7.50 for Chili with Hot Dog, $7 for Loco Chili Moco), named for Ichioka’s nephew, Eric. “Eric helped me make it (the chili) so he got credit,” Ichioka says with a laugh. “Our chili is different because we put bacon and sausage in it.” One of the eatery’s newest items, Keiki Sports Pack ($3.25) — featuring a scoop of rice, hot dogs and teriyaki chicken — is becoming a favorite, as numerous customers have ordered it ever since it was introduced about three weeks ago. “It’s pretty recent; the teriyaki chicken can be substituted for any meat we have on the menu,” adds Ichioka. Ert’s Grill is not only a favorite because of its plate lunch selections, but also because it serves breakfast all day. “Ert’s Big Breakfast
($7.50) — three eggs, two scoops of rice and two meat choices — is really popular, as is the Steak & Eggs ($7),” says Higa. “Our steak is popular because we always use a good cut of meat,” adds Ichioka. “Our Breakfast Bento ($6.75) is really popular. It has steak, two eggs, two scoops of rice with furikake and a hot dog.” Specials change daily at Ert’s Grill, featuring dishes such as Smoked Meat with Onions. The eatery originally featured four specials a day, but has since reduced the number of specials to two entrées. “Every day we try to make something new, like a stir fry, chicken dish or salad,” Ichioka says. “We want to have something that we consider original. We almost always have homemade baked goods, too.” In the near future, upcoming changes for the eatery include looking into an Ert’s Grill lunch wagon and introducing a new menu, to which favorites like the Smoked Meat with Onions will be added, as well as additional chicken and fish items. Ichioka also notes that Ert’s Grill has been doing fundraisers for different sports teams, in which select menu items, such as Breakfast Bento, are sold for lower prices.
