T

he goal of the Building Industry Association of Hawaii is to design and build a new home that provides the opportunity to actively support an environmentally responsible, modern lifestyle that advocates for the values found in the Hawaiian ahupuaa. The feeling at BIA-Hawaii is that each individual is responsible for the health and wellbeing of Hawaii. The New Hawaiian Home provides such an opportunity. BIA-Hawaii is offering this model prototype green home to any buyer who is looking to embrace these principles. BIA has already begun posting the buyer’s qualifications and responsibilities on its website, and invites all to see the elements of this home on display at the Remodel It Right,

Remodel It Green Expo, which ends today, Aug. 15, at the Hawaii Convention Center. Offers for this home will be received by BIA-Hawaii up to 1 p.m., Sept. 30. Qualified offers will be reviewed by the selection committee, and a site visit and interview will be scheduled between Oct. 1 and 14. The award will be made by Oct. 15. Construction is targeted to start after Jan. 15, 2011. The three months between the time of award and the start of construction, will be the time the buyer has to prepare the lot to receive The New Hawaiian Home. It will allow BIA-Hawaii the time necessary to get the building permit and to order materials. The construction will take approximately four months and the cost of this project is estimated at $600,000, including landscaping.

Where to Go

Before the

Winds Blow

I

t’s getting to be peak hurricane season, and experts say we are overdue. But since it’s human nature to procrastinate, most of us develop “disaster amnesia” — in which we develop a “no worries” attitude because there’s no report of a coming storm in the news. Waiting until the storm is approaching is not only dangerous to our financial situation, but our family well-being as well. It is actually relatively inexpensive to take some proactive action, and every house can use some “hurricane/tropical storm hardening.” Some Hawaii homes are more vulnerable than others, and shown here are a few samples of the type of houses and conditions which are proven to be the most susceptible over the last 20 recorded storms in Hawaii, the Southeast, and Eastern Mainland. “It is wise for safety, peace of mind, and financially to invest the relatively modest amount it costs to better prepare your dwelling,” says Gerald Peters of HPS Hurricane Protection Services. “Check the fine print of your hurricane insurance policy. It is different than your fire protection terms. The average deductible is 2 percent or more of insured value, or

$6,000-$10,000 before they have to give you even $1 of claim money. They have doubled it the last few years, and blamed it on Hurricane Katrina. However, nearly all of them will give you yearly reductions of $200 all the way up to $600 per year for hardening your house’s wind resistance.” Here are a few things to consider if you have:

• Structuress with h roll-up garage e doors. Tracks are weakly connected to the garage posts or studs and

need additional original equipment type brackets, and deployable garage door tie-down kits. The cost is $120 to $600 per door.

Structuress with h carports. These are everywhere and look and act like giant wings. They are infamous for blowing off even in winter storms. They need to be doubled up in number of hurricane clips, and HPS also offers simple-to-deploy-roof corner-tie-down strap kits, which go directly from the roof tops down to concrete slabs or blocks

only during the storms. These cost $100 to $200 per car port. Wood d framed d houses/ townhousess from m 190 0 to early y ’90s.. These have roof systems basically just resting on the wall systems with the angled tips of “toe-

nails,” often barely still in position or rusted out. Over the years these roof structures expand/ contract/bend/move/dislocate, yet homeowners of old houses rationalize. “Well, it made it through Iwa and Iniki — even

though those storms may not have been near their area and also the structural dislocation from all those years and near destructions have put the SEE PAGE 12

I want to have my staircase done in hardwood. What are my options?

A: Stairs are one of the best places for wood due to the wear and tear caused by heaving ourselves up each step. You’ve seen those wear patterns in carpet. There are basically two different methods for tackling stairs. One is to use flooring to cover the riser and a majority of the tread, and to add a bullnose or stairnose to the edge of each step. It is advisable that all stair parts be glued and nailed for stability. The other commonly used method is to use whole fabricated pieces, call stair treads, and their companions, risers. Similar to a wooden cutting board, each piece is cut to fit and placed onto your step. Once again, a secure connection is very important to avoid possible injury.

Benefits of

Going Gas

here are a number of ways to finance remodeling projects. At the next Build New Or ReDo seminar — slated for Tuesday, Aug. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Homeworks Construction showroom — you’ll have an opportunity to find out about the latest programs being offered by First Hawaiian Bank. Personal bankers Terri Tanaka and Hope Okimoto of First Hawaiian’s University Branch will provide information on how you can utilize construction mortgage financing or home equity lines of credit to upgrade your home — from a kitchen and bath remodel to room additions. Tanaka and Okimoto, as well as other personal bankers at First Hawaiian, have the knowledge and expertise to assist customers with financing needs. Homeworks president and CEO Jim Byxbee, who launched the popular seminar series 10 years ago, noted that the majority of attendees are planning either

kitchen and bath remodels or additions to an existing home in order to create space for a growing family or a multi-generational household. “We’ve structured these seminars in order to give attendees an opportunity to sit down with the presenting professionals in a casual, one-on-one format ... with no obligation, just exchange of information,” Byxbee said. Planning a kitchen remodel or designing a kitchen in a new custom home? Brian Yee of The Gas Company will give a special presentation and host a discussion on the advantages of using gas in your home. Cooking with gas is generally considered the preference of most professional chefs and at-home gourmets. Yee will explain how gas is supplied to a home, whether by connection to a gas line or by using propane cylinder tanks in areas without gas line access. He will also demonstrate the economic benefits of gas

dryers and gas water heaters and explain how The Gas Company can help you design outdoor living spaces using gas in everything from grills and cook tops to tiki torches. Then, there are the appliances that need to be considered by those planning to use gas — primarily ranges, clothes dryers, and water heaters. John Banquil of Ferguson Kitchen and Bath will be on

hand to offer information on the latest models of energy-saving appliances available, with an emphasis on those powered by gas. The Build New Or ReDo Seminars are presented in the Homeworks Construction showroom, located on the ground floor of the Homeworks Building at 2111 S. Colorful Trim

A

dvanced, colorful exterior trim is conquering several roles, distinctly benefitting time-squeezed homeowners and letting them lock away the paintbrush. Trim has historically provided homeowners with a basic solution, delivering a cleanly finished look, often with white accents. Now, innovations are increasing both the aesthetic and functional value of trim, bringing more appeal, durability and home protection to areas such as windows and doors, and corners and fascia. From welcoming porches to distinctive gables, IQm Trim brings added flair, in a wide spectrum of 17 colors that leads the way with the cellular PVC trim industry’s only comprehensive color selection. The curb appeal also comes without ever having to paint, giving homeowners more quickly completed projects and maintenance-free exteriors. While most other trim manufacturers are limited to white and a version of beige,

IQm’s animated shades such as Dusty Blue, Sagebrush and Cabernet can add attractive personality. Colors like Castle Grey and Antique

ond-story trim. Such maintenance-free color liberates busy families and baby boomer homeown-

ers from tedious, costly tasks. IQm does offer realistic wood graining along with a low-gloss finish. Backed by a limited lifetime warranty, it has a protective acrylic cap to resist scratching and fading. It won’t peel, flake or blister, whereas painted wood can flake within a year. When it comes to water management, IQm also has a unique feature. Its AquaFlex fin helps protect a home from moisture damage, channeling water down and away so it can’t intrude behind siding panels and cause potential problems like mold and rot. A deep J-channel helps deliver clean looks and fast installation, keeping cut panel edges and excessive caulking hidden from view. IQm is also color-through, ensuring uniform color even with imperfect miter cuts. “We wanted to give both design integrity and real choice to homeowners who know there’s a world of color possibilities to match their style,” says Jonathan Wierengo, director of marketing for The Tapco Group, maker of IQm. “Whether a homeowner may want a second color for a warmer facade, or a fifth one for more expressive style, IQm instantly provides nofuss, enduring curb appeal.” IQm Trim Boards is a division of The Tapco Group, a U.S. Green Building Council member. Home Decor Giving You a Backache? I Get a good bed. The support provided by the bed and mattress at night are key to alleviating back pain. Ensure you have a good, firm mattress for proper support. If a new mattress is out of the question, use a memory foam topper. And for severe back pain, adjustable beds can make getting in and out of bed easier and less painful.

T

hose with aching backs might want to look at their home decor to help ease the pain. When decorating, most homeowners consider their personal style, color schemes and price range, but many don’t take time to consider products that can actually benefit their health. “More than 80 percent of adults will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives, and

treating back pain is often very time-consuming and costly,” says Dr. Dave David, a board-certified physician. “I encourage my patients to explore treatment options they can incorporate into their homes.” Some easy decor solutions that can help alleviate back pain include: I Use reclining furniture. Seven in 10 doctors are likely to rec-

ommend sitting in a reclined position to help alleviate back pain, according to a survey of primary care physicians conducted by the L.C. Williams and Associates Research Group for La-Z-Boy. And, the American Chiropractic Association endorses La-Z-Boy reclining furniture for its back and lumbar support. Reclining offers total support, taking the strain away from the back in a way that sitting up straight or lying flat cannot.

I Choose tables of traditional height. Stay away from the trendy bar-height tables that don’t allow you to anchor your feet. These can put added strain on your back while sitting and require extra effort to get in and out of the seated position. I Find a deep tub. Soaking in a deep, warm tub is a great way to get a dose of the moist heat that is so often recommended for back pain. Whirlpool jets can also provide soothing relief for aching

back muscles — just keep the setting low for gentle massaging action. I Select carpet or decorative padded rugs. Hard floors can be beautiful, but many lack shock absorption beneath the feet. Selecting carpets or rugs can provide another measure of comfort for back pain. If hard floors are a necessity, consider a substance like cork, which is firm but flexible. I Organize for little reaching. Store heavy items and those you use most often at arm-level to avoid the strain that comes from lifting or bending.

“There are many little things that sufferers of chronic back pain can do for relief at home, from sitting in a recliner to getting a firm mattress and taking a nightly soak in a deep tub,” says Dr. David. For more back pain relief tips from Dr. David or additional LaZ-Boy product information, visit la-z-boy.com/PrescriptionRe cline. Courtesy of ARAcontent

Home Decorating : The Cool, Clean Whites of Summer

T

here’s nothing like white to add a cool, clean look to your home. From linens and pillows to china and cabinetry, a splash of white not only adds light to your interiors, but can lighten your mood as well. The kitchen is one of the best spaces to go wild with white. White is the perfect backdrop for a kitchen no matter its style, as the color creates a sense of simplicity, cleanliness and calm. Summer is the perfect time to free up your mind and your living style with these simple home improvements that incorporate the beauty of white in your kitchen’s design.

A breath of fresh air We are living in a freer time in terms of design and style, according to a report by Iconoculture, a leading global consumer research company. Homeowners are continuing to seek new ways to personalize their homes, blending different design elements and incorporating home accessories that are as individual as they are. “As the economy softened, status turned from consumption to personal identity,” says Cathy Hitz, brand manager for Diamond Cabinets. “People realized that it wasn’t such a bad thing and this sense of embracing individualism has transpired into all aspects of life, including decor.”

Start with a blank canvas in your kitchen with white cabinets. This provides you with space to add pops of color and per-

sonality by showcasing your own favorite treasures, such as a bold tapestry, glass vase or your child’s finger painting. For

example, Benson PureStyle Laminate doors from Diamond Cabinets are a crisp white that cleans up quickly and

plays nicely with a wide range of other home decor elements, from creative wallpapers to unique lighting fixtures. The doors feature a nonbeaded panel that has a traditional appeal yet requires minimal effort, displaying the precision styling of paint and the durability of laminate. Personalize it further with glass cabinet door inserts which allow you to show off your favorite dishes, glassware and collectibles. Decorative glass brings the added benefit of creating more reflective light in your home, helping you make the most of summer’s sunshine coming through the windows by day, or the flickering of candles on the dinner table by night. Choose something visually interesting — either with texture or color — for the floors or countertops. This will keep the kitchen from looking too stark. And whether you

Simple, clean and uncluttered Maintaining the clean look of white in the kitchen is simple — the key is avoiding clutter. One literally out-of-sight solution is a Base Recycling Unit, which lets you hide four 27-quart removable bins for recyclable papers, jars, glass and plastic items discreetly behind a cabinet door. This smart addition not only helps to de-clutter your kitchen, but it also allows you to live a little greener and a little simpler. Tips for Quick and Easy

Wallpaper Removal

T

he lilac print wallpaper in your bedroom may not be your style. And if your house is on the market, that lilac print wallpaper is probably not your prospective buyer’s style either. Removing wallpa-

per is easier than you may think and it has a big impact on a home’s appearance. In fact, removing aging, sagging wallpaper is one of the least expensive ways to improve a home’s resale value and shorten its time on the market, ac-

cording to a survey of real estate appraisers. “While many people dread removing wallpaper, it’s one of the simplest ways to give a room a fresh, updated look,” says Rust-Oleum brand director Andrea Topper. “And, with a little know-how and the right tools, it’s easier than most people think.” Topper offers this advice for “painless” wallpaper removal in three easy steps:

Step 1 — Score the wallpaper. Most wallpaper has a waterproof sur-

face, so it’s necessary to score it so the wallpaper stripper can penetrate and loosen the glue underneath. Use a wallpaper scoring tool like Zinsser PaperTiger, a palm-held tool that perforates the wallpaper without damaging the wall. Move PaperTiger in a circular motion to make as many holes as possible, using light pressure. The more holes you make, the faster and easier it will be to remove the wallpaper.

stripper like Zinsser DIF Quick Wallpaper Stripper, an environmentally friendly wallpaper stripper that removes wallpaper in just two minutes. DIF Quick loosens the glue underneath the wallpaper to make wallpaper removal quick and easy. Simply spray the readyto-use solution on the scored paper starting at the top and working your way down, making sure the wallpaper is thoroughly wet.

Step 2 — Apply a wallpaper stripping solution. Next, apply a wallpaper

Step 3 — Remove wallpaper. Use a tool like the Paper Scraper to remove

the loose wallpaper without surface damage or hard work. If any glue remains after the paper has been removed, spray the area with more stripping solution, wait a few minutes and remove the glue with the scraping tool or a sponge and rinse with clean water. Before you know it, you will have removed all the wallpaper, and your room will be ready for redecorating. For more project ideas and product information, visit zinsser.com. Courtesy of ARAcontent

Luxury Bathroom are worth Upgrades that the investment Kohler recently integrated its BubbleMassage technology into three of its most popular cast iron bathtub lines. The technology uses 40 air jets positioned around the bath to deliver a fully customizable air massage; users can opt for heat or no heat, and vary the intensity of the massage by adjusting the speed control. ew room renovations return as much on your investment — in terms of resale value and enhanced enjoyment — as refurbishing a bathroom. Maybe that’s why many Americans, who have tightened their belts when it comes to other areas of home improvement, still seem to be willing to spend more for luxury bathroom upgrades. Bathroom remodels traditionally return more on investment at resale time — often 70 or 80 percent, or even more. The trend toward spalike baths continues to appeal to both potential buyers and renovating homeowners. While homeowners may still be

willing to spend on luxurious bathroom products, they’re also looking for upgrades that give them the most return for their investment. Here are a handful of upgrades that can help elevate a common bathroom to a luxurious home resort: Massaging bathtubs The bathtub has become a symbol of modern luxury in the bathroom. Whether you prefer a placid soaking tub experience or an energetic massage from whirlpool-style bubbles, adding an upscale bathtub can greatly enhance the luxury quotient in any bathroom. For strength and beauty — as well as durability — cast iron has

long been a material of choice when designing a luxury bathroom. Now, you can even find castiron tubs that provide those lovely, fizzy bubbles that shout “luxury.”

Flat screen TVs LCD TVs are showing up in upscale bathroom designs. The trend that started in top-end hotels in cities like New York and Las Vegas, has found a willing, loving audience in homeowners seeking ultimate luxury in the bathroom. With manufac-

turers offering LCD TVs in a wide range of colors, sizes and configurations, it’s possible to find one to match virtually any decor. Plus, mounting manufacturers have created wall mounts that address one of the LCD’s most common issues — viewability from an angle. Adjustable wall mounts, many of them motorized, make it possible to adjust the TV for viewing from several points in a room — whether it’s the soaking tub or the shower. Lovely lavatories Even one of the most utilitarian items in the bathroom can enhance the overall luxury of the setting. One of the hottest trends in lavatories is to

go beyond commonly used materials. Kohler’s Nature’s Chemistry and Artist Editions collections incorporate glass and bronze to create a more dazzling marriage of form and function. Materials and design touches are all intended to evoke a sense of grace, luxury and harmony with the natural world. Showers that show off People spend, on average, 10 minutes a day in the shower, according to one study conducted in the United Kingdom. In America, especially, showering isn’t just about getting clean. The shower is also a favorite spot to relax, decompress and SEE PAGE 12

LaminateAFloors: ‘Real’ Wood Alternative

ou love the look of natural wood flooring but are afraid to install hardwood because you know the floor will take a beating from the kids, dogs and the heavy day-to-day traffic all too common in modern family life. But you don’t have to sacrifice high style looks for boring sensibility when considering a new flooring option in your home — not if you choose laminate, that is. Today’s best laminates combine the realistic grain and texture of wood with high durability and scratch and indentation resistance that “authentic” wood floors don’t provide, according to Jeff Katz, director — laminate for Tarkett Residential, a leading

provider of innovative and sustainable flooring. And not only are today’s laminates available at a fraction of the cost of real wood floors, but they’re right in sync with the latest designs. “There’s always a new decorating trend around the corner,” Katz says. “It’s imperative for manufacturers to respond to market demand, keeping up with the most up-to-date trends to ensure consumers are getting the latest in style and design, as well as technology.” One such line is Tarkett’s Trends laminate, a durable new collection featuring eight of the hottest flooring designs, including Old World-inspired antique-stained planks and soft, hand-scraped wood

grains. Colors and styles in this line will continually rotate out with new introductions to give homeowners the newest, most popular looks in flooring, ultimately providing them with the high style of premium wood floors without the fuss. “That’s the beauty of laminate products,” Katz says. “They’re the new normal — great-looking products that deliver great performance at a great value. When shopping for laminate products consumers should look for flooring that is engineered with sturdy inner core board layers — preferably ones that deliver high impact resistance (at least an IC3 rating). This type of rating helps provide excellent in-

dentation resistance, and when combined with highly rated top surface protection (AC3 or better) kids and pets can run and play freely on laminate floors without making a dent or marring up the surface’s good looks. As a result, laminate flooring is so durable versus real wood products that some laminates come with up to a full lifetime warranty. What’s more, creating a laminate flooring transformation in your home is a relatively simple DIY project. Many of today’s new laminate floors come in easy-to-install planks that simply snap together without the need for messy glue or nails to pound. Laminates can even be used over several types of existing flooring, often eliminat-

nate flooring solutions keep up with their day-today life. That’s something we know will never go out of style.” For more information about the latest trends in laminate flooring, visit www.tarkettna.com. Courtesy of ARAcontent

perhaps even practice your karaoke style. Multi-jet showers and multiple showerheads are becoming soughtafter improvements in upscale baths. Steam showers are another popular trend. A self-enclosed unit uses a steam generator to turn the water from the tap into steam. Occupying about the same size as a traditional shower, steam showers allow you to control the temperature of the steam and often come with a range of upscale features, including massage jets and voice activation. Fancy faucets Faucets are no longer just a way to get some water for washing your hands or brushing your teeth. Today, they’re a style statement, as well. Whether you opt for traditional or modern, classic or contemporary, two-handled or handsfree, you can find a faucet design to fit

virtually any decor. And manufacturers continue to expand the range of options available, introducing new designs and extra touches. Kohler’s new Stance faucets feature refined angles and edges with a softened cubic flair to create functional faucets that also look beautiful in contemporary baths. While it may be your dream to incorporate every upscale touch possible into your bathroom design, if your budget allows for only one or two, you can still greatly enhance the room’s luxury by adding elements that offer the most enjoyment and value for your investment.
