Ready to make your home

Greener with solar power?

Take these steps to ensure it’s done right

ctober is National Energy Awareness Month, and people nationwide are doing things to make their homes more energy efficient. Installing photovoltaic (PV) panels is one important step homeowners can take to lower energy costs, reduce their impact on the environment, and help create a sustainable energy future for Hawaii. Taking a few simple steps before making the investment, however, will ensure that you maximize your savings and have the peace of mind of knowing your system will be running smoothly for years to

come. Do an inventory of your home. Are there other steps you can take to maximize your energy savings? Consider buying a solar water heater, Energy-Star appliances, compact florescent light (CFL) bulbs, and heat-reducing window shades or film. These steps can make a big difference by themselves, or in combination with a PV system. Learn about new technologies and incentives by attending an open house, seminar or workshop. The Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative (hawaiicleanener gyinitiative.org) is a great source of information on

new technologies, energy policies and solar energyrelated events. Many companies, such as American Electric, often hold open houses at customers’ homes so you can get all your questions answered by the pros. Do some research on companies before making a decision. The PV/Solar industry is booming right now, and there are new companies launching every day, hoping to make a quick buck. Make sure the company you select will be around in the years to come to honor its warranty and service your

PV/Solar system. Ask a potential PV installer the following questions: How long have they been in business? Can they show you customer referrals? How quickly will your project be scheduled and completed? Do they offer financing incentives? Finally, get your current electrical wiring thoroughly examined. Is it up to code? Have you added air conditioning or room extensions that might be stressing your system? PV systems are essentially mini power plants, so you want to be sure your existing wiring can handle the

utilize infrared and ultrasonic equipment to detect hidden weaknesses in your electrical system. They also provide advice on how to fix potential issues,

such as a flickering light fixture, before they become hazardous. While most companies may suggest just changing the fixture, American Electric’s CurrentSAFE technicians go deeper, getting to the root cause of the problem. Going solar is a great way to quickly reduce your home’s energy consumption and costs. Making sure it’s done right means fewer headaches and ongoing savings for years to come. “We’ve been in business for more than 65 years, and we’ve noticed the recent rapid growth in PV companies,” says Ray Hose, president of American Electric. “Not all of them have the track record or expertise to ensure that your system is installed and maintained correctly. It’s a good idea to get to know the company you’re going to trust to install your system.” To learn more, call 4405098 (toll free 877-4405098), or visit American Electric’s website at Amer icanElectricHomes.com.

ow is the time to start planning your kitchen remodeling by getting rid of the old and taking hold of the new! With the end of the year fast approaching, wouldn’t it be nice to start off 2011 with a fresh, new look in the kitchen? There is a remodeling company that can do the job and fit your budget.

N

Essential Cabinet Refacing Inc. has more than 20 years’ experience in satisfying customers. The company, for example, can save you money by refacing your cabinets. This gives the kitchen a new look without ripping everything out. The doors and drawers are replaced, and the faces of

job will be to reorganize the inside by getting rid of duplicates and kitchen gadgets that are never used. In the process of remodeling, you can declutter your kitchen and bless a charity with your donations.

Essential Cabinet Refacing also can supplement other areas you need help in. Need more cabinet space and have room for a new pantry? ECR can build it. All of the company’s cabinets are custom made in its shop so the price is very affordable. Need to replace your dishwasher with a cabinet? ECR can build it. Need some roll-out

Building homes that stand the test of time n this day and age of synthetic materials and quick fixes, it’s comforting to know that there are construction companies that still adhere to traditional methods to ensure your home lasts forever. Huaxia Construction is one of those companies. “In China and Japan, we see many historic buildings that were built 1,000 years ago, but are still

I

solid,” said company owner Xiang Feng Cao. “Our company would like to help our customers build or remodel their homes like that.” According to OVID Home’s Craig Wong, who has been so impressed with Huaxia Construction that he still sends referrals to them, the company’s owner doesn’t use any substitutions, like plywood

with a wood face, when it comes to constructing homes. “When (Cao) builds a home, the materials are 100 percent solid all the way through,” Wong says.

“He wants to do the job right — the first time.” While Huaxia Construction, a name that represents China or Chinese civilization, does general construction residential

projects from the ground up, the company also provides repairs, remodeling and additions. In fact, the company’s vast experience enables it to support customers with selecting the right cabinets, flooring, light fixtures and colors to match individual style and living needs. “Mr. Cao will look at a project and make suggestions to create a more beautiful living space and more efficient buildings,” Wong explained. “Crown molding, special tile from China and custom work on curved spaces. We have been in awe of some of the

creative solutions he comes up with. “It’s amazing that he is both creative and extremely precise,” Wong continued. “If you tell his crew to show up at 7:10, they are there at 7:10. It’s comforting to know that they are so reliable and will meet your deadlines.” Huaxia Construction is based in Honolulu, but is able to work on projects throughout the state. For more information, contact Huaxia Construction at huaxia.hawaii@gmail.com or 636-1888, or visit the website at huaxiaconstruc tion.com.
