Creating harmony between

disconnecting rooms A

t some point, we've all been told to “go with the flow.'” And when it comes to great design, it’s definitely sage advice. This hit home for me during a recent redesign for my clients, Lisa and Randy. The couple recently renovated their kitchen into a sleek, contemporary gem, full of clean lines and beautiful finishes. But they had an adjacent family room that was a total disconnect. With its parquet flooring and clunky furniture — not to mention a giant giraffe statue — the family room looked like it belonged to another house. The couple wanted harmony between the two rooms, but didn’t know where to start. So, putting into play the principle of design flow, I set out to make the uninspiring family room visually relate to the gorgeous kitchen. The key to this type of design is getting the two rooms to speak the same language, and this is done with material, form, shape and color. To make this happen, I got rid of everything in the family room and started from scratch. I selected a color palette of the grays, charcoals, tans and browns used in the kitchen, and decided on the best ways to extend those shades into the family

I gave the third wall a dash of the unexpected. On onehalf of the wall, I installed a large-scale floral mural that relates to the kitchen's flowery chairs. On the other half, I hung a huge custom-made room. I painted the family room a light wooden door with exposed hardware, gray and installed new walnut hardwood flooring that picks up on the color of the which injects a bit of rustic character into the space. kitchen island. this project, details were a big part of establishing the flow. So, I brought in side tables, throw pillows, artwork and accessories in colors and styles that helped pull the rooms together. It’s one thing to create a beautiful space on its own, but in design, no room is an island. By using colors, materials and even a bit of the unexpected, I created visual flow between Lisa and Randy’s kitchen and family room. The rooms now speak a common language — and will be happily chitchatting for years to come.

Decorative

Concrete Flooring for All

E

nhance your exterior with designer looks created by Granicrete Hawaii’s concrete flooring overlays. Pool decks and patios can be given a makeover in time for you to enjoy outdoor living this summer. Or, you can wow your guests with handcrafted, custom designs that complement your landscaping and suit your lifestyle. Decorative concrete overlays are excellent for a variety of surfaces and are becoming increasingly popular because of their unmatched durability, versatility and affordability. Granicrete flooring is designed to resurface, rather than replace, existing concrete, tile and wood. Turn your moldy and discolored concrete slabs into a luxurious and inviting space. Existing flooring does not need to be level. Granicrete’s polymer-modified concrete is trowelled on by hand and follows the contour of your flooring. The Granicrete product line is used from start to finish and is formulated to endure the wear of high-traffic areas and all types of weather. The products have been tested for more than 12 years, producing great results for customers around the world. The flooring look of your dreams is possible with unlimited design, color and texture possibilities. Customers are able to achieve a custom look, tailored to suit their needs. Installers assist in the design process and create sample boards for customers, allowing them to see how it looks at their home and make any changes, if needed, prior to installation. Dramatic transformations are completed in three to five days. Installers thoroughly clean and prepare the surface first, to ensure the base layer adheres to it, leaving no air gap, and preventing peeling and lifting. If a stone look is desired, the pattern is taped out by hand, and no stamping is involved. Then, the texture layers are trowelled on. Coloring is done by hand to create an authentic stone look or decorative finish. The sealer is then applied and is dry within hours. Satin or gloss sealants are available for either a natural or wet look. Stained concrete finishes or natural stone looks like flagstone, slate and travertine are achieved, yet more affordable. Easy maintenance also yields savings for years to come. Flooring is completely sealed to resist stains and moisture, and will not hold mold and bacteria. Cleaning is a breeze — simply sweep, mop and pressure wash with low PSI. Sealers also are UV resistant to protect against fading. Re-sealing about every two years maintains the integrity of the color and texture.

GRANICRETE

Granicrete Hawaii’s concrete HAWAII overlays are great for resurfacing driveways, pool decks, patios, walkways and interior flooring. They also are excellent on vertical surfaces for creating custom barbecues, bars, fireplaces, walls and backsplashes. fter a parking lot has been paved and maintained with a product such as sealcoat, or has just been cleaned, re-appling pavement markings is highly recommended because directional arrows and lines for parking stalls wear down and fade over time. Re-applying these markings with Liquid Thermoplastic will ensure that they remain bright and last twice as long. Walker-Moody Construction is now installing Liquid Thermoplastic, a product from SealMaster Hawaii. Conventional parking lines are striped at a wet-film thickness of 15 mils; Liquid Thermoplastic, however, can be laid down much thicker at 30-35 mils. Glass beads also are recommended for optimum reflectivity and night visibility. This product is cold spray-applied, but features hot-

applied thermoplastic performance. This is a high performance, highly durable, environmentally friendly, 100 percent acrylic water-based paint. Dry-to-no-pickup time is typically five minutes. New asphalt surfaces should be allowed to cure sufficiently, which is normally about four weeks’ time, to ensure that they are free of light oils on the surface. If sealcoat, such as MasterSeal Ready-to-Use sealer or OptiPave Plus, was installed, it should be allowed to cure for at least 24 hours prior to applying traffic paint. If new pavement markings are being applied to existing concrete or asphalt surfaces, they should be clean and free of all loose materials and dirt to allow for good adhesion. Walker-Moody Construction has

SEALMASTER the latest technology and training, and the company’s trained professionals are always willing to review your property, measure the asphalt, provide recommendations in a formal proposal, and deliver your project on-time and on-budget. Whether you want a quick fix or a long-term solution, give WalkerMoody a call because its professionals are able to fix it all. Total asphalt maintenance work for Walker-Moody Construction is now approaching 9 million square feet. right sun and abundant green — is that what comes to mind when you think of summer? The season of sunny skies and green outdoors has arrived. Why not take advantage of warm weather sun to "green" your home with improvements that deliver environmental, economic, emotional and physical health benefits? Solar power has been called the only truly clean energy because using it emits no greenhouse gases. Modern technology has made it easier than ever to harness the power of the sun for your home — and without the need for the big, unattractive solar panels that symbolized the solar power of bygone eras. You can use the power of the sun to create a bright, welcoming environment in your home — and save on energy bills at the same time. pane LoE3 insulated glass in the newest noleak skylights reduces heat gain by 64 percent compared to ordinary glass and by 35 percent compared to earlier LoE2 glass, providing more daylight and better heat control for yearround comfort and energy savings. Enhance your skylights with blinds or shades for even more control of natural light entering your home. And the accessories, as well as the units themselves, can be operated by remote control. Skylights also can provide passive ventilation for your home; other forms, such as exhaust fans, require electricity to vent stale inside air. The natural chimney effect of modern no-leak skylights vents volatile organic compounds (VOCs), humidity, odors and stale air from the home while allowing fresh air back in. On rainy days, an automatic sensor will close the venting skylight when the rain starts falling. These units also provide privacy, especially in baths and bedrooms. You can even bring the power of the sun into rooms without direct roof access through sun tunnel tubular skylights. A new flat-glass style provides the advantages of a sun tunnel, but replaces the dome-like roof profile with a sleek, low-profile roof glass.

Modern skylights can be installed in as little time as a day by a trained professional," says Ross Vandermark, national product manager of skylight manufacturer Velux. "Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, creating a natural light-filled environment, but they're also environmentally friendly in many ways. If you're having trouble envisioning a skylight in your home, the Velux Skylight Planner app can help you visualize how the improvement will look." You can download the free iPhone app from iTunes or the Android version from the Android Marketplace. Energy-efficient water heating Just as the sun warms a swimming pool in summer, you can draw on its power to heat water for your home use. Low-profile rooftop solar panels and the EnergyStar-qualified Velux solar water heating system use the sun's energy to heat water and help trim your waterheating bill. Solar water heating also directly benefits the environment. A solar water heating system can help lower your family's carbon footprint by reducing power usage without any greenhouse gas emission. Small changes mean

big style in a room refresh I

t’s the time of year when thoughts turn toward refeathering the nest. With more people choosing to stay in their houses, the desire to make “home” more desirable is stronger than ever. Most people are forgoing major renovation projects because of the economy, according to a poll of top builders and developers taken by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) for CBS Watch.com. However, that doesn't mean everyone is satisfied with status quo. There is a new trend among homeowners to opt for a room refresh in lieu of a major renovation. Smaller

projects such as updating flooring and wall color make a difference and won't break the budget. Small changes can translate into big style, according to Erinn Valencich, an interior designer and blogger for HGTV’s “Design Happens.” “If the bones of a room are good, you don’t need to renovate. You can create a big impact simply by updating a few key elements in the space,” says Valencich. “The application of styling tips, like adding colorful pillows or rearranging accessories, can start to transform a room.” She suggests trading secondary furniture pieces

between rooms to get a fresher vibe without investing in new furniture. Shop secondhand furniture stores and junk shops for unusual pieces that will add a little something extra to the setting. When Valencich approaches a room refresh, she often begins with the floor. “Most people may not realize how much a floor adds to the ambiance of a space. A dull or scuffed floor can make a room look tired,” says Valencich. Many people try hiding worn floors by layering in rugs, but Valencich warns that too many rugs become clutter. Rather than purchasing area rugs to solve

the problem, she suggests when paired with deeper putting those dollars into a toned walls. new floor. • For a more intimate “A floor can become a real hero in a room look, select a darker floor. refresh,” says Valencich. “It can help in addressing chal• Rich, dark floor colors lenges within a space.” also create a nice balance For example: with bolder walls. • A small, dark room will feel more spacious with a lighter floor and either a soft or bright wall color. • Light floors can also create a dramatic impact

When adding floors to a space, Valencich prefers hard surfaces such as wood or laminate for their depth of tone and natural feel. She says that lami-

nate is often overlooked as a solution, but its durability and ease of installation make it a solid choice. “Laminate floors have come a long way since they were first introduced. In fact, it’s pretty hard to tell the difference between premium laminate such as Quick-Step and hardwood floors,” says Valencich. There is a wide range of styles available in laminate, from satin furniture

finish to hand-sculpted, from painted oak to highly textured surfaces like Quick-Step's Rustic Cottage Oak. “I like the look of the warm, smoky gray cottage oak floor. Its highly textured grain looks and feels like distressed barn board. It works well in both a traditional decor or as a nice contrast to sleek modern lines,” says Valencich. Another alternative is the look of exotic wood. If you prefer the elegant graining and unique color of rare African and Brazilian species, laminate is definitely the way to go. If you are considering purchasing a new floor, quickstep.com offers a floor configurator that allows you to choose both wall color and floor styles to see how they work together. To make floor selection even easier, Valencich has curated her own collection of Quick-Step “Designer's Choice” floors, which can be viewed at quickstep style.com.

with Shirley Pai Hilton, Pres. & CEO, PII A necessary step in gluing wood flooring down to a concrete slab is the need to also seal that slab beforehand with a vapor barrier. Extra labor, more cure time, and higher materials cost. But our new TITEBOND 771STEP does both in one easy step. Seal your slab while you glue down your floor. You will save time and money. And best of all, it’s easy clean-up and a GREEN product.

• Inspect interior and exterior finishes around windows and doors. Look for peeling or chipped finishes. Refinish if necessary. • Check windowsills and tracks for dirt and debris. Clean out the area with a dry paintbrush. Do the same for patio doors.

‘Dream Kitchen’ begins with

Right Cabinet Choices C

abinetry is the most prominent feature of a kitchen. It’s the first detail that catches your eye when you walk into the room. So it makes sense that cabinets should be the first choice you make when remodeling the kitchen in your present home or designing a kitchen for a new home. The finishes and colors you choose will set the style and standard for the other components of your kitchen, such as countertops and flooring. But because there are so many types of cabinets on the market today, homeowners typically find it difficult to make a decision. Golden Cabinets, home of Hawaii’s largest inventory of cabinetry for kitchens and baths, simplifies the decision-making process by creating settings in their showrooms where you can see virtually every type of cabinet and consult with a cabinet specialist — even obtain design assistance at no extra cost. Golden Cabinets carries the highest quality hardwood cabinets which are always affordably priced. The finely crafted cabinets, shelves, moldings and drawers are available in rich cherry wood, warm maple, classic oak, and white finishes. No particle board, plastic, or laminates are incorporated into these solidly built natural wood products. All are fitted with handsome, heavy duty, stainless steel fixtures and precision hinges. The cabinet doors come in a variety of styles, including solid wood and wood with framed glass insets to show off your fine crystal and dinnerware. There is also a choice of glass panels — clear, frosted and etched. A variety of designs to accommodate all kitchen layouts, such as corner cabinets with fold-out doors and lazy susans, and cabinets with roll-out shelves, plus vanities and vanity accessories for the bath, can be viewed in the showrooms. Golden Cabinets owner Wen Wen Cao noted that there’s no long wait between ordering and installation — one week after you place your order, the cabinets will be delivered or can be picked up by your contractor. “We also offer free assembly and design services ... just provide the rough dimensions of the room and we can lay out a cabinet design and configuration for you on the computer in a matter of minutes,” Cao said. “Then, 16 | HAWAII RENOVATION | MAY 1, 2011
