ur goal at the Building Industry Association of Hawaii is to design and build a new home that provides the opportunity to actively support an environmentally responsible, modern lifestyle that advocates for the values found in the Hawaiian ahupuaa. We believe each individual is responsible for the health and well-being of Hawaii and can contribute to a better Hawaii by the way they live. The New Hawaiian Home provides such an opportunity. BIA-Hawaii is offering this model prototype green home to any buyer who is looking to embrace these principles. BIA will post the buyer’s qualifications and responsibilities on our website after Aug. 6. Come see the elements of this home on display at the Remodel It Right, Remodel It Green Expo, Aug. 13, 14 and 15 at the Hawaii Convention Center.

Offers for this home will be received by BIA-Hawaii up to 1 p.m., Sept. 30. Qualified offers will be reviewed by the selection committee, and a site visit and interview will be scheduled between Oct. 1 and 14. The award will be made by Oct. 15. Construction is targeted to start after Jan. 15, 2011. The three months between the time of award and the start of construction, will be the time the buyer has to prepare the lot to receive The New Hawaiian Home. It will allow us the time necessary to get the building permit and to order materials. The construction will take approximately four months and the cost of this project is estimated at $600,000, including landscaping. The New Hawaiian Home is a two-story residence with a covered lanai, and a twocar garage with garage door. The first floor includes the master bedroom and bath, great room, kitchen, including Energy Star appliances; laundry center, including energy-efficient washer and dryer; walk-in

emember that sweet children’s song that advises us to “let the sun shine in” so we can enjoy life? Update it for today’s modern lifestyle, which gets lived in air-tight homes filled with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and maybe we should add “and let the volatile gases out.” Nothing adds beauty and charm to a room like escaping VOCs. And while a venting skylight adds visual drama to a room, it also helps remove gases, moisture, odors and other trapped VOCs through passive ventilation via the chimney effect it creates. Passive ventilation can help alleviate “sick house” symptoms that develop when a house doesn’t “breathe” —or exchange stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air. Many items in the home, from adhesives, upholstery and carpet to the furnace, fireplaces and even

Concrete Care:

Easy, cost-effective fixes for your homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s concrete

oncrete is so durable and dependable itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to take it for granted. But like any other surface around a home, concrete needs maintenance â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and sometimes repair. In fact, performing simple upkeep on concrete surfaces when problems are relatively small can spare homeowners the time drain, expense and aggravation of minor problems that have developed into major issues. Since economic conditions have made homeowners more vigilant about taking care of their homes, preserving exterior concrete surfaces, such as driveways, patios, steps and walkways, is a worthwhile investment. Fortunately, a number of the most common repairs are easy to do and can be accomplished in a weekend.

Surface renewal Resurfacing old, worn or spalled concrete is an economical alternative to removal and replacement. Replacement can cost $3.50 or more per square foot whereas resurfacing â&#x20AC;&#x201D; using a product such as Quikrete Concrete Resurfacer â&#x20AC;&#x201D; costs 25 to 30 cents per square foot. To use: I Thoroughly clean the old concrete to ensure the resurfacer will adhere properly. This can be achieved using a 3,500 psi high-duty pressure washer to clear dirt, debris, dust and any other loose materials from the concrete. I Use weather stripping to ensure the resurfacer doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t flow into the control or expansion joints. These are the clean lines that were cut into the con-

crete when it was poured to allow for the natural temperaturedriven expansion and contraction of the concrete. Without joints, concrete will crack. I Mix the resurfacing compound and the recommended amount of water in a 5-gallon bucket using a 1/2-inch drill and paddle mixer. The consistency should be lump-free and flowable. Sparingly add water to reach the desired consistency. I Saturate the concrete

surface and remove standing water from low spots. Pour the resurfacer and spread it with a long-handled squeegee. Use the squeegee to scrub the material into the surface. Within five minutes of com-

pletely covering the surface with the resurfacer, broom the surface, making sure all broom strokes go in the same direction. Cosmetic work Minor blemishes like small cracks can be re-

paired without resurfacing. Instead, try using a patching material such the Quikrete Patching Compound. Available in a ready-to-apply putty, the patching compound is ideal for minor repairs like small non-structural cracks and spalling less than 1/4 inch thik. Homeowners also can find polymer-modified compounds that bond directly to the concrete surface for a smooth repair. These compounds are self-bonding and -curing so no additives are needed. Another option for

cracks less than a half inch wide is Quikrete Concrete Crack Seal, which comes in a quart bottle that makes it easy to pour directly into the crack. Dry to the touch within 30 minutes, the sealant maintains adhesion through freeze/thaw cycles. Larger cracks may require a more flexible polyurethane sealant with increased bonding power and durability.
