Final bids for energy-efficient ‘Hawaiian Home’ due this week By y Karen n Nakamura
ow do you live green in a green home to maximize cost savings? Many times we are victims of old habits and when we live in a green home we must change those habits and attitudes to achieve the greatest benefits of comfort and cost savings. This is done through user or owner education, the last of the series on 6 Elements of Green Building. The New Hawaiian Home is a m o d e l demonstration prototype built to the greenest level of design and construction certified to achieve the highest level of green home building in LEED and the silver level of the ANSI National Green Building Standard. The new owners will be coached and monitored on all of the systems and products that have gone into this home. Bills that can be cut through a willingness to live green are:
H
Food. Eat fruits and vegetables grown in your yard through edible landscaping. Eat fresh fish, herbs and spices from an aquaponics garden.
Energy. Use energy star appliances like the refrigerator, washer and dishwasher. Also, use electricity from photovoltaic panels and by using natural lighting and compact florescent bulbs. Refrain from using an air conditioner and clothes dryer; turn off all machines, electronic equipment and lights when not
in use, including extension cords. Finally, insulate all walls and the attic. Waterr and d sewage. This can be accomplished by, one, composting food wastes and not running the garbage disposal; two, capturing and reusing rainwater for irrigation; three, using low flow faucets and shower heads; and four, using water saving toilets, dish washers and washing machines. Maintenance e bill. This can be done by using sustainable and low maintenance building materials that will last through proper maintenance in-

cluding; counter tops, floor covering, wall covering, siding, roofing, and paint. Aside from the savings, you can also live comfortably by using the house fan to draw out hot air and draw in fresh outside air for natural ventilation in a healthy environment. Additionally, you may utilize ceiling fans to keep fresh air circulating. Making these life style changes will give the owner of the New Hawaiian Home the maximum savings of all operating costs and living costs. The Building Industry Association of Hawaii in collaboration with the Hawaiian Electric Company and the Department of Economic Development and Tourism are working in partnership to promote green building by educating contractors, trades workers and consumers to improve the quality of life for the people of Hawaii. The deadline to submit bids for the New Hawaiian Home is 5 p.m., this Thursday, Sept. 30. Visit the website biahawaii.org for more details.

Alternative Electric:
ooking for an electrician, but don’t know who to call? As you open the yellow pages, there are about 50 different electrical contractors to choose from. But who do you call? To satisfy its customers, Alternative Electric stands by its customers through all phases of the job. Customers can always expect a free estimate and a detailed explanation of what Alternative Electric suggests should be done. The company always takes the time to explain every situation to the cus-

Cool your home naturally with Tradewind Windows
radewind Windows are designed for Hawaii’s abundant tradewinds that cool our islands naturally. The windows are built right here on Oahu at a facility in Halawa Business Park. The benefits of having custom, made-to-order windows manufactured locally are: customers receive their windows faster than from abroad, with less risk of damage; products like window parts/components and accessories, are readily available; and most importantly, helpful local customer service is always available. Tradewind louver jalousie windows are available in aluminum or vinyl surround frames, and they deliver in style and functionality to island homes. Vinyl surround frames can be made with ei-
T
ther inside or outside screen features and continue to be the frame of choice among homeowners. The inside screen feature makes screen removal easy for quick cleaning and is especially convenient for multi-level homes. Window corners are fusionwelded to create a single piece of durable, scratch-resistant vinyl. This greatly reduces the risk of leaks at the corner joints. There is no need to paint or worry about wood rot, rust, or corrosion with vinyl surround frames. The product is available in two colors: white and almond. They also are available with a 2-inch decorative vinyl exterior trim option to accentuate the window profile. The aluminum surround frame provides a rigid, durable, sleek profile with
mechanically fastened corners. Aluminum also requires a minimum amount of maintenance with occasional dusting, washing to remove dirt and salt buildup from the frame. Again, there’s no need to worry about wood rot or rust. The Tradewind aluminum surround frame is available in three colors: bronze, satin anodized and white-painted finish. The Tradewind louver jalousie window hardware is made of corrosion-resistant components that are housed in aluminum or vinyl channels. Though the demand for 4-inch blades still rules, the 6-inch louver blades are gaining popularity in Hawaii as they provide a different window profile for the home. Jalousie blade options include:
clear, opaque, gray, bronze tint, low-e glass as well as redwood, aluminum and PVC. Tradewind louver windows enable maximum airflow through window openings unlike sliding and single-hung windows. No other window system enables maximum natural ventilation throughout the home like louver jalousie windows. A major advantage of louver jalousie windows over other window systems is the ability to regulate airflow through the window opening, even when it rains. You can’t do this with a sliding or single hung window. RMA Sales is a locally owned and operated company that has been providing quality win-

Q: Does wood flooring make financial sense? It’s not cheap! A: Putting wood flooring in your home is one of the best home improvements you can make to your property if you understand that it is an investment and not an expense. The right wood floor (not laminate or carpet) will add permanent value to your home, value that will increase with the price of your home in the future. And what other wise investment (stocks, CDs, gold) can be used and enjoyed so much, every single day of the year? You will love what a new wood floor does for your lifestyle, your health and your real estate investment. Please visit our showroom for some investment advice very soon! Please email questions to shilton@piiwood.com. ALOHA!

Designs work for you
hen looking for someone to build your home, make sure you settle on a general contractor you’re comfortable working with. To qualify that statement, after interviewing potential contractors, you should base your final decision on the con-
W
tractor’s quality of recent projects, as well as his knowledge of building, relationship with sub-contractors and references. Steven Wong of Island Home Designs is a general contractor you can trust. He’s on time for meetings, honest, communicates well and finds solutions to problems.
Family and friends say it was a brave task taking on a recent project of tearing down an old house and rebuilding it from the ground up. The house was a virtual buffet station for termites, with its foundation blocks literally floating over the dirt. But Wong had no fear and was determined to get things done. He has a calm demeanor and is patient with customers. If he doesn’t know about a product, he researches it and provides feedback. The relationship with your general contractor is a partnership. Like a maestro in a symphony, general contractors orchestrate the subcontractors’ every move. Many residents don’t have the
experience to coordinate home construction from the ground up. Let Island Home Designs be the
one to help you get started. For more information, call Island Home Designs at 383-4663.

decor fresh?
ooking to freshen up your home décor? While it might be counterintuitive, a great way to do this is by using items you might not otherwise have a need for — or to put it bluntly, junk. You may have already heard about a growing
L
trend called “junking,” which involves incorporating junk in your home decor. This allows for imaginative self-expression, endless possibilities for original design, and the ability to make your interiors stylishly green. Another plus is that you’ll
save a little green too, since you won’t be buying as many new items. Sue Whitney knows a thing or two about breathing new life into things some would consider junk. She’s been leading the trend for the last decade, founding the pre-
miere junking website www.junkmarketstyle.com and appearing on NBC’s The Today Show as the
junking expert. Whitney has also written three instructional books on the topic.

Revolutionary SmartTrack technology, one of the product’s greatest benefits, allows your home to breathe so that moisture vapor doesn’t get trapped in the walls and cause mold or dry rot. And for homeowners in Hawaii, that can mean peace of mind. Craneboard has been testing this product for seven years, and the products are already installed on more than 100,000

Can you use junk to keep your home decor fresh? FROM PAGE 7
says Whitney. “I love flea market shopping, but there are countless other spots sweet on junk. Salvage yards, used restaurant supply stores and farm sales are just a few of the many alternatives. The right products and tools are essential for crafting unique junk projects. Hammers, nails and super glue are good essentials to start with, in your junker’s toolbox. Gorilla Super Glue is the perfect adhesive if you are looking to embellish your finds with other objects. For creating projects and other project fixes, the original Gorilla Glue works well. As Whitney says, “Create your own style - one piece of junk at a time.
Here are a few of her suggestions on how to cozy up your cottage for the cool weather season: • A little repositioning of furniture and accessories, a change of accent color, and a few new junk acquisitions or creative projects will take you down the transition highway quickly and easily. For example, tightening up your conversation pits will make your rooms seem cozier. You can achieve this by simply moving your furniture a bit closer and adding a few extra accessory junk pieces. When it’s cool outside, the closer, the better. • Vintage pillows and throws are staples in the junking world. Trade in
your light and bright cotton throws for ones with autumnal colors and cozy wool. Accent pillows with contrasting vintage textiles on either side will take you
directly from summer to fall with a single flip. • Thoughtfully combining colors and textures is a key element in cultivating

he days are getting shorter and seemingly busier with kids back in school, fall activities kicking off and — although it seems hard to believe — the holidays on the horizon. The long, carefree laissez-faire days of summer have turned a bit more regimented with the change of seasons. Now is the time to get organized and back into a routine that is tailored to

The truth is you don’t have to favor one over the other. Great kitchens can perform this balancing act when they are designed using innovative products and ac-
your lifestyle. Begin with an organized start to your day in the hub of all home activity: the kitchen. A kitchen n fix-up p — striking g a balance With kids constantly searching for snacks, adults on the go, lunches to pack and meals to prepare, a workable routine needs an efficient kitchen with great organization and a superior utilization of space. If
spent in kitchens, there is a dichotomy that pulls at people when thinking about a kitchen fix-up,” says Cathy Hitz, brand manager for Diamond Cabinets. “Is it style over function or function over style?
cessories that give you both.” A kitchen fix-up does not have to be bothersome or too costly. The best place to start is probably with what you have the most of, use the most, and spend the
most time looking at: your cabinets. Cabinetry manufacturers, like Diamond, have an assortment of door styles, expanded wood choices and finishes, decorative glass options and an array of architectural elements and customization products that fit all kitchens, tastes and budgets. The cherry on top is that inside the cabinets for every room in your home, you can find smart and useful organization features. A place e forr everything and d everything g in n itss place In a cluttered kitchen, valuable time can be lost looking for car keys, important mail or even measuring cups. When choosing products to fit your kitchen fix-up, it is as important to understand the utility and unique needs of the people who use the kitchen every day. Do you do a lot of
cooking or baking? Or is your kitchen the repository for all things? And not just typical kitchen items, but things such as coats, backpacks, keys and phones? Diamond’s Logix line has plenty of organization elements and flexibility. One time-saver is the “dropzone” cabinet, which features a pullout charging station for small electronics that can clutter up a kitchen table. In addition, it has other essential organizational features for the family kitchen, such as key and coat hooks, a white board for messages and a spot for backpacks, briefcases or purses. As the season unfolds and you work your life into an organized routine, don’t let panic set in as you get back into the swing of things. With an eye on your lifestyle and a few smart kitchen cabinet fix-ups, your kitchen will be ready.
