ut of all the questions I get these days, the most popular remains, “What exactly is feng shui?” I answer simply that it is a body of knowledge that can be used as a tool to positively “manage” the energies of your environment. By consciously arranging your environment to your best possible advantage, you create a space for your life to unfold in the highest possible way. When you are supported by your environment, you feel more energetic, you are more productive, things seem to flow better, the people in the environment get along better, and you don’t have as many distractions. Are you financing your environment with your precious life force, or are you gaining energy by being there? The following are some simple concepts used in feng shui that you can put into practice immediately to create more positive energy in your life.

Here’s to investing in your ideal kitchen C

lose your eyes and imagine your dream kitchen. Imagine it exactly how you want it. Imagine the way your new floor feels under your feet, and how your perfect countertops feel under your fingers as you move through your kitchen. Imagine the way your drawers and cabinets open and close smoothly, and the way the beautiful wood grain almost glows under the perfect lighting. Imagine the soft reflections of the warm accent lighting on the brushed stainless steel of your appliances. Imagine yourself standing there in your dream kitchen, for the first time after your renovation, and feeling the satisfaction of finally making your dreams come true. Seven out of 10 Americans consider the kitchen to be the center of the home. It’s where we come together as families in the mornings and evenings of our lives, to cook and to eat together at the kitchen table. It’s why we put so much inspiration into creating our ideal spaces for our families to live in together. It’s why we should create our ideal kitchen the right way the first time. Most Americans expect their kitchen renovations to have a life of at least 15 to 20 years. Many expect their kitchen renovations to even last the lifetime of the house. Custom redesign and renova-

tion are worth the investment considering the long lifetime of everyday use expected of the kitchen. Many homeowners shopping for kitchen renovations believe the myth that custom renovation is out of their reach. The truth is, in many cases custom renovation work does not cost significantly more and even represents a better value — especially when considering the lifetime

of your kitchen. Ask yourself this: Is it worth investing a considerable amount of money to renovate your kitchen and not end up with exactly what you want? Or is it worth investing a little more to ensure you end up with your

dream come true for the lifetime of your kitchen and not with something you may not be happy with later? Jenny Lee is just one of many homeowners who share the buyer’s remorse of not doing their renovation the way they really wanted the first time. When she did her first kitchen renovation, she based her decisions on the absolute lowest price and compromised not only on getting the look and feel she wanted, but also on the quality of the materials and workmanship. “I should have trusted my gut instinct,” Lee remarked, remembering her doubts at the time about the quality of what she was purchasing. “One year later, my cabinets and drawers were falling apart, and I was tired of living in the kitchen I had bought for the lowest price when I

FACTORY ADDRESS: 220 PUUHALE ROAD, B-1 CONTACT: 847-8711 / www.stonefactoryusa.com

knew it wasn’t really what my dream was.” Lee then turned to The Cabinet & Stone Factory for help on the recommendation of a friend. She loved the idea of a one-stop shop to handle her entire renovation. Her previous renovation was a headache because of having to find, work with and coordinate all the vendors, contractors and designers to work together. And when there were problems, everyone would point fingers at one another and not take responsibility or accountability for those problems. The Cabinet & Stone Factory has been built on the reputation of quality service as a one-stop renovation shop that takes homeowners through the entire design/build process, from creating the initial design concept all

the way to the final touches, with a single point of contact and accountability to make their renovations more streamlined and easy. The Cabinet & Stone Factory prides itself on its quality of service to making sure homeowners are taken care of during the entire process of their renovation; making sure homeowners get their dream renovations done right; and making sure homeowners are truly happy the first time they step into the renovated kitchen of their dreams. “Knowing that we helped someone make their dreams come true is one of the best reasons we are in this business,” says co-owner David Chang. “Come in for a free no-obligation consultation, and take the first step toward making your own dream come true.” JULY 31, 2011 | HAWAII RENOVATION | 3

gy earned.” We start by providing a free energy audit using state-of-the-art technology. Energy gobblers such as old refrigerators, air conditioners, hot water heaters and electric stoves can cost $40-$50 a month. After EnergyPro Hawaii has pinpointed all the energy-saving opportunities available to you, we design your energy plan and put the money you save each month toward a solar power system. EnergyPro Hawaii’s second principle is “Energy produced is energy earned.” We are happy to announce the Power Kit. The Power Kit is a 2.25 kWh system that can help you save up to $100 per month and only costs $4,995 after tax credits. Most small families can cut their electric bills substantially through the Power Kit. Our Power Kit is a great way for homeowners to start taking control of their energy liability. The Power Kit will pay for itself in about five years and will generate power for 25 years. This translates into hope for Hawaii! We can afford to live here and do it responsibly as well. EnergyPro Hawaii is proud of the fact that we do not subcontract our work, but are a local team of skilled plumbers, electricians and builders under the same roof. We install solar hot water, tankless gas, solar power, solar fans, skylights, variable speed air conditioners and many other conservation technologies. Let us design a long-term energy plan with you. The Way to Beautiful

Walk-In Bathtubs W

hile most of us enjoy soaking in a bath, it is not a luxury the elderly or the disabled are able to take advantage of. The simple task of stepping over the 19-inch bathtub is not all that easy. When our movement is impaired, keeping oneself clean means spending thousands of dollars to modify a bathroom or having to relocate to a care facility. Walk-in bathtubs provide an affordable solution to this problem. As its very name implies, walk-in bathtubs allow you to “walk in” to the tub, much like you would into a shower. Walk-in bathtubs have a door at one side, with a water-tight seal, providing easy access and exit, with-

out the risk of slipping and falling. While access is a key component, there are other benefits as well. You can select models that come with whirlpool jets, custom seats, neck rests and contoured backs.

These features not only make the tubs more convenient, but offer therapeutic benefits as well. Our walk-in bathtubs allow you to enjoy a com-

Now’s the

Best Time to Purchase a Photovoltaic System PACIFIC

ISLANDS CONSTRUCTION CONTACT: 841-7756 / pacificislandsconstruction.net

C

onsumers who have had reservations regarding the purchase of a photovoltaic system (PV) may not have a better time to do so than now. Because of discontinued financial support or subsidies in Europe for PV, there is an oversupply that has caused the market to lower prices (more than a 10-percent reduction in cost) on modules. The cost savings when applied

directly to the purchase price reduces the time it takes to pay off the system. This article will provide additional reasons why today is the best time to make your purchase of a photovoltaic system. The existing tax credits that are available will not be here forever, which means now is the time to take advantage of them. The state of Hawaii tax credit of 35 percent of the system cost with a limit of

$5,000 per system may not be around much longer because of financial pressure to keep government on a sound financial footing. The federal tax credit of 30 percent of the total cost should not go away soon, but anything can happen with the way government has been working. The important thing to remember is that these incentives make a PV affordable and when they are discontinued, the sys-

tem cost will be greater to you. The cost of energy that we pay per kilowatt hour has increased from under 26 cents per kilowatt hour at the beginning of the year to over 31 cents per kilowatt hour this month. The January rate of 26 cents per kilowatt hour reflected a rate increase that was approved by the PUC. If you have seen an increase in your energy bill from last year to this year, you are well aware of the sizeable increase to your electric bill. It was recently announced that HECO has filed for an additional rate increase and, if approved, will increase the prices you pay for electricity even

further. The escalating energy cost will only be greater in the future when the world economy improves and the demand for energy causes oil prices to rise again. A short time ago after the tax credits were applied, the average time to pay off the remaining cost of a photovoltaic system through a reduced electric bill was seven to eight years. As a result of rate increases from escalating energy cost, competition in the market place, and lower cost for PV modules, the average payback time has been shortened to five to six years, once you have a system installed. The shorter time it takes for the system to pay for itself also means the sooner the future savings will be realized. The future PV savings can be spent on other items or just be saved for future expenses. The purchase of a photovoltaic system is not

only a price issue, however. The quality of the module, the installation/flashings used on the roof, manufacturers’ track records, and contractors, attention to details should all be considered. Pacific Islands Construction believes that an informed consumer will make the best decisions, and the company strives to provide customers with the best information available. The company also provides third-party reports, shows the differences in the module construction, and provides details on all phases of installation or construction. Contact Pacific Islands Construction by calling 841-7756 for a consultation or visit the website at pacificislandsconstruction.net. The company’s goal is to provide complete satisfaction now and into the future by providing customers with the best constructed and installed solar energy system.

esigning and building for your present and future lifestyle has become a hot topic on Homeworks Construction CEO Jim Byxbee’s popular interactive Saturday morning radio show, “Build New Or ReDo.” Byxbee is now devoting a regular segment of the show to discussions on the subject with co-host Mike Buck and answering related questions from listeners on the air. Byxbee, who is serving as 2011 president of the Building Industry Association of Hawaii, is shown in the photo (right) with Buck at the Clear Channel radio studio where the show is broadcast live on KHVH AM830 Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. Byxbee explains that “universal” or “lifestyle” design is sometimes confused with ADA design, which is regulated by the codes of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). “Designing for accessibility and convenience of people at all life stages could take disability into account, but shouldn’t be equated with just creating extra wide doorways or wheelchair ramps,” he says. “When we build or remodel for people who intend to continue living in their home, ‘aging in place’ as it’s called, or for people with young children, or families with older members, there are many different design features to

For families with elderly members, we often build a second bathroom with a walk-in shower and grab bars, which require special blocking behind the walls. Non-slip flooring should

always be installed in bathrooms, regardless of the age of the users. “For clients who have concerns about accessibility in the future, which is the case with owners of hillside houses or houses with two or three floors, we actually create a space where a lift or elevator can be added later. “When a couple planSEE PAGE 15

• The door is the entry point for all energy. Make sure the key doesn’t stick, the door opens effortlessly, there are no squeaky hinges and there is no clutter stacked behind the door.

Wood costs a bit more than carpet but it’s a lifetime product and a better use of your renovation dollars. Secondly, you can never get carpet as clean as you can wood. Just wipe it and you can eat off that floor! Third, breathe easier. Imagine, no more dust or allergens that can get your whole family sick. Fourth, it’s easier on your body than stone as it absorbs the shock as you walk and it’s a lot warmer on your feet. ALOHA!

When upgrading

technology, don’t forget your everyday items

T

echnologyhas changed so much, so quickly, that it might be difficult to remember how you lived life prior to carrying around a cell phone, having a table computer or, for that matter, multiple remotes to turn on all the electronic devices at home. But many homeowners, who have integrated technology into other aspects of their lives, still ignore one everyday object that is very likely completely out of date — their toilets. Flushing technologies have made great leaps and bounds over the past two decades — improving water efficiency, flushing performance and even a user’s comfort. And if you haven’t considered replacing your toilet with one that is equipped with

advanced flushing technology, you might be surprised at what is available, and how much it could help your water savings. The average family of four uses about 400 gallons of potable (treated) water each day, and bathrooms represent more than 50 percent of all home indoor water use, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. In the past, less water usage usually meant a less reliable flush. But technology has improved so that toilets with low water usage ratings are more efficient and hygienic than their water-guzzling predecessors. If you don’t know about high-efficiency toilets and all the options that are available, here are a few

water-saving flush options to help you upgrade the technology in your bathroom: • Dual flushing. Liquid waste doesn’t require nearly as much water for flushing as solid waste, which is where dual-flushing technology comes in handy. You can select which volume of water flush you want; which will help you save water and money. Because users may not be fully educated about the difference between the light flush and the bulk flush, these toilets aren’t recommended for high-traffic areas, or public places. But in your home, your family could easily save water by using the lighter flush when appropriate.

• Pressure assistance. Flushing performance can’t get any better than toilets with pressureassist technology. This technology pressurizes the water, giving your home’s toilet commercialgrade flushing capabilities without the commercialgrade noise. • Gravity flushing. Gravity flushing is the most typical technology found in residential

homes. The innovative Class Five flushing technology combines gravity with a powerful flush that also addresses bowl cleaning. The Kohler Wellworth toilet family uses this technology, and one new model flushes just 1.28 gallons, saving a family of four up to 16,500 gallons of water a year.

bines technology, comfort and style into one universal, stylish package. If you’re looking for a toilet with an interactive LCD touch-screen interface, bidet and deodorizer, dual-flush technology with .6 and 1.28 gallons per flush, built in music system, heated seat and foot warmer and intuitive auto open and close lid, • NUMI Flushing check out the Kohler Technology. The ultimate Numi toilet with bidet flushing experience com- functionality.

refinishing becomes necessary.

What About Dust? This depends largely on who is doing the work. Hawaii Hardwood Flooring cares about your indoor air quality so we have invested in dust extraction systems. Some companies may just have a bag attached to their sanding equipment, which is not a good way to keep airborne dust out of your house. Our dust extraction systems help to minimize an enormous amount of dust and older finish materials that would have lingered in your home for months after the finisher leaves. This process is 95 percent to 98 percent dustless, which means clean air for you and your family to live in. When other companies just use a bag, you’re likely to incur extra costs, having to call in someone to clean your home or invest lots of time and money cleaning up after them. Dust can find its way anywhere in your home, and those with allergies and breathing

problems should avoid this at all costs. Hawaii Hardwood Flooring specializes in installation of all types of flooring and offers various services including sanding and refinishing, staircase fabrication, slab prep and leveling. Give us a call at

pany can save you money by refacing your cabinets — a method that gives the kitchen a new look without having to rip everything out. The doors and drawers are replaced and the faces of the cabinets are resurfaced, but the rest of the cabinet box remains intact and in place. Your kitchen will have an entirely new look! Refacing saves on cost and makes everything more convenient for you.

ECR also can make problem areas more efficient and accessible. Need more cabinet space and have room for a new pantry? Need to replace your dishwasher with a cabinet? Need some roll-

out drawers in the pancabinet for easier access? ECR can build it. All the company’s cabinets are custom made at its Sand Island shop so the price is very affordable (no middle man or sales commission).

And if you’re ready to have all your cabinets replaced, ECR can build new cabinets — made to order. Owners Ringo and Michele Pauly have their office’s shop at 212

The Great Outdoors: Homeowners embrace ceramic tile for unexpected outdoor spaces

ning a family builds a house, they should childproof it at the same time, particularly with specially designed gates and fences around decks and lanais. People with dogs also need to consider what types of fences, gates and walls will secure their pets, and hardwood floors in the house will probably not be a good idea. “A lot of this is simply a matter of common sense and good advance planning with the project coordinator you’re working with. It’s much more cost-effective to build these lifestyle features into the new or remodeled home now, rather than later.” Since Byxbee founded Homeworks Construction 15 years ago, the company has designed, built or remodeled hundreds of homes ranging from affordable to luxury throughout Oahu and won many awards. Homeworks has been consistently ranked as one of the nation’s Top 500 Remodelers by Qualified Remodeler magazine. Multigenerational homes have become a Homeworks specialty and account for a high percentage of the company’s projects. “We invite anyone contemplating a multigenerational home or interested in learning more about designing for their future as well as present lifestyle, to call us at 9552777 with their questions or call me direct at 8645519. Names will be kept confidential if we answer the question on the air,” Byxbee said.

M

any homeowners are finding new ways to embrace ceramic tile in their outdoor living spaces, choosing the time-proven material for uses that traditionally have called for wood, stone or even concrete. Numerous advantages draw homeowners and designers to choose ceramic tile. You may already know that ceramic tile is beautiful and durable, but it also inhibits mold, mildew and fungus — problems that can arise in a damp environment. It withstands pool chemicals and direct sunlight without fading. It’s also slip-resistant, making walking safer

in areas where swimmers will be leaving a pool. While ceramic tile’s appeal for pool areas may be obvious, it’s also useful in other outdoor settings such as sunshades and outdoor enclosures.
