hen is the last time you took a good objective look at your entrance? In feng shui, the entrance is a vital key to bringing positive energy flow into your home. The entrance is considered the “mouth of the property from which life force enters allowing those living in the home to thrive with new opportunities.
Basic entrance feng shui
Basic Feng Shui says that an entrance should be inviting, attractive, comfortable and unobstructed. It’s often advised that you have a welcome mat and portray life force in the form of color or plants. Items that block energy flow and create obstacles such as shoes and dead
plants should be removed. In addition, it is important to have your address in plain view, and your home easy to find. Having your name and address in multiple locations is favorable — on the building, the door, the mailbox, etc. The easier it is to find your home, the better of a job you are doing to direct the flow of energy to your entrance. All of these are basic “entrance rules and can be found in any simple feng shui book. However, I’d like to go one step further and explain why symbolically and energetically it is so important to pay attention to our entrances.

It marks the transition from that which is considered public, to that which is private and unknown. Making the entrance comfortable eases the subtle, yet very real discomfort in transition on a subconscious level. Entryways that are stark and empty create discomfort. Mystery at the entrance does not invite positive inward energy flow. The items and furnishings you place at the entrance need to create a link to the people within in order to establish comfort and familiarity. By taking

steps to do so you will “entrance the energy to more easily cross the threshold.
Create an identity Since the entrance is the first clue a visitor has of what lies beyond the door, it is important to create a clearly-defined identity. You can do this by using items that hint about the SEE PAGE 14

Any member of the C&C management and sales team is available to sit down with the customer at the showroom and work out a threedimensional design on the computer, if the plan or blue print is provided. Otherwise, they will meet with the homeowner at the jobsite and work out a detailed plan there. Customers planning a kitchen or bath remodeling project or building new are advised to start working on their cabinet and counter selections early since these
are the major built-in components of the rooms, along with flooring, and all should complement each other. C&C Cabinets Granite handles delivery and installation of the items purchased. They also can quote on remodeling, including carpentry, flooring, painting, windows and doors, if the customer does not already have a builder. At the C&C Cabinets Granite showroom, maple and cherrywood cabinets in a variety of classic designs are on display, as well as stainless steel sinks. The cabinets
are precision designed and include high-quality handles, pulls and runners. No particle board or other synthetic materials are used in the fabrication of the cabinet doors, shelves and drawers. Customers who wish to display their glassware or dinnerware can order cabinet doors with glass insets. Although these are high-quality products, C&C Cabinets Granite has kept costs down. The company’s pricing is competitive, even for customized cabinets and countertops.

relative newcomer to the window industry, fiberglass windows are some of the most energy-efficient windows, because they do not warp, shrink, swell, rot or corrode in varied climates. Because of their thermal stability, they are excellent for holding large expanses of glass. Pella Impervia windows and patio doors, made of patented fiberglass composite materials, are proof that energy efficiency doesn’t only come in the form of wood and doesn’t apply only to new homes. Pella Impervia products support the green movement and contribute to LEED projects in several major categories. Here’s how this highendurance product from Pella is the perfect solution for a home or business while supporting the green movement:

home was completed in late May. The New Hawaiian Home is a joint collaboration of the Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA-Hawaii), the Hawaiian Electric Company and the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, to take sustainable living to a higher level. The key components of this green home incorporate environmental considerations and resource efficiency into every step of the building and development process to mini-

Energyefficient qualities include the roof, windows and insulation to help the building shell keep hot air out and cooler air inside while the Energy Star appliances, renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic electricity and water heating systems decrease overall energy consumption within the home. Water-efficient fixtures and appliances enhance the
Resource-efficient design decisions in home size, lot orientation and floor plans that also reduce energy consumption. There also is an Energy Star tax credit for these windows

4) Tropical can re-roof your home with a variety of metal roofing products.
Metal roofs are the most hurricane- and high windresistant roofs made. And since Hawaii is way overdue for a hurricane, this is reason enough for having a metal roof installed. But homeowners forget that metal roofs also have dead air space that will help cool the roof. This dead air space also gives space for insulation to be installed. Today most homeowners look to roof coatings to cool roofs; however, many homeowner associations will not allow white roofs. This means that metal roofing, insulation and radiant barriers are the only ways to cool these homes’ roofs. So now that summer is here, maybe it’s time to go cool and green? Declare your Energy Independence A
s Hawaii residents prepare to celebrate the United States’ independence, now is the time for homeowners to strive for energy independence, especially since the state’s largest solar company RevoluSun is offering $500 off solar installations for those who sign contracts in July. In addition, there are multiple opportunities for Hawaii homeowners to learn more about solar, join in a day of fun during the RevoluSun-Surfrider Foundation Sandy Beach clean up, or just celebrate our nation’s independence with the RevoluSun team. “As a locally owned company, RevoluSun is committed to helping Hawaii become a cleaner, smarter place to live — through beach cleanups, community education, or just supporting our various community groups through sponsorships,” said Eric Carlson, RevoluSun principal. “We look forward to introducing more Hawaii homeowners to solar energy with a variety of fun community events this July. In addition, anyone who wants a free bumper sticker can visit one of our open houses or our web page to show your support of a cleaner, smarter Hawaii.” Hawaii residents can learn more about renewable energy or just help clean up our
state at one of the following events: • July 4 – Kailua Fourth of July Parade, 10 a.m. It will be hard to miss more than 50 orange hard hats as the RevoluSun team and friends walk during the 65th annual Kailua Fourth of July parade! The fun begins at 10 a.m. traveling south along Kainalu Drive from Palapu Street to Kailua Intermediate School. Also making a special appearance will be local cheer squads, the RevoluSun Segway Guys, and a variety of RevoluSun vehicles. Meanwhile, the RevoluSun walkers will hand out “cleaner, smarter” bumper stickers. Also joining RevoluSun will be Blue Planet Foundation with its Tesla electric vehicle and Kanu Hawaii, two organizations committed to creating a more sustainable Hawaii. • July 16 – Sandy Beach Cleanup hosted by RevoluSun and Surfrider Foundation, 10 a.m. to noon For the second straight year, RevoluSun is partnering with the Surfrider Foundation to invite the public to help clean up Sandy Beach. s electricity costs continue to increase, so does the popularity of photovoltaic systems. By utilizing sun power to generate electricity for household needs, other than hot water, photovoltaic systems can be large and powerful enough to bring your electric bill down to the basic minimum charge for service. He is highly qualified in the installation of both solar water heating systems and photovoltaic systems, and he can claim a long roster of satisfied customers.
“I’ve found that many new customers are unaware that you don’t need to install the maximum amount of photovoltaic panels at the outset,” he said. “You can continue to add to these systems over time. Downsize in space, S
upgrade in quality of life
maller homes equal better quality of living these days. Many homeowners are downsizing the space they occupy, but are upgrading and customizing that space to make it better fit their lifestyle. Most homeowners today prefer an energy-efficient home with lower utility bills, rather than a cheaper home without energy- and water-efficient features, according to a recent National Association of Home Builders’ survey. One way to refresh your home and make it sustainable is to upgrade your bathroom fixtures. Comfort is still key in these downsized but upgraded bathrooms. And it can’t get much better than a lavish shower. TOTO’s Aimes CeilingMount Showerhead with LED Lighting gives you this luxurious shower experience with water gently cascading down on you from the ceiling. But since the LED light doesn’t require any electricity or batteries, you can enjoy the experience even more. Kinetic energy created by the moving water powers the candlelight-toned light,
keeping the brightness gentle on your eyes and flattering to your skin. But don’t stop with just electrical savings in your bathroom. If you haven’t replaced your toilet in several years, there’s a

very good chance that it uses way more water per flush than needed. On average, toilets account for about 27 percent of a home's indoor water usage, making them the biggest water hogs. High-efficiency toilets can help your family significantly reduce your water consumption. TOTO’s Carlyle II One-Piece High-Efficiency Toilet uses only 1.28 gallons of water per flush — and it’s high performance, which means you only need to flush once to completely remove waste from the bowl. With an attractive design, this is a great upgrade to your home, both in water efficiency and aesthetics. Quality is very important to homeowners these days, and developing a beautiful, energyefficient bathroom — especially in today’s downsized and upgraded spaces — is a growing trend among homeowners that's helping them improve their quality of life.

Focus on the
Faucet D
o you tend to lean toward traditional designs, but like the convenience of modern technology? If you do, you’re not alone. Keep your kitchen pretty and polished with a faucet that packs a modern punch. In one year alone, the average consumer washes 11,680 dishes — quite a bit of time spent in and around the sink. So why not make the faucet the focal point of your kitchen? Fortunately, you can do so with style
and state-of-the-art technology. While it may feature classic, elegant styling on the outside, it’s the advanced technology on the inside that makes the new Brantford high-arc pulldown faucet from Moen stand apart from the rest. This traditionally designed faucet is the first to offer the new Reflex pulldown system — for unmatched performance that offers smooth operation, easy movement and secure docking to keep the spray wand in place. In fact, Reflex makes Moen
pulldown faucets at least 40 percent easier to extend than any other pulldown system — all while offering warm, traditional charm to your kitchen. Another hidden benefit in the Brantford faucet is its consumer-preferred, multi-function pulldown spray wand. This unique feature has a button, concealed on the backside of the wand, which allows users to switch between several water-flow patterns, including aerated spray, stream or Moen’s unique pause button.

personality and uniqueness of those living within. It can be a distinctive welcome plaque, a unique fixture, blooming plants, or friendly figurines of items that represent you or your family — be creative!
Supportive entryway Use hip-height items around the entryway to offer stable energetic support. Why? Because hip-high items energetically represent “cane” energy — what people use when they are unsteady on their feet to support them as they move from one location to another. Items and furnishings at hip height promote stability and offer a subtle sense of safety. Entrance ways that have the feeling of support are less stressful to cross.
Making changes to invite energy If you follow these concepts when creating your entrance, you are not only establishing a sense of safety and connectivity for those who walk through it, you are issuing an invitation for beneficial energy to enter. Neutral Base is a selfpriming 100 percent acrylic water-based emulsion designed for high durability pavement color coatings. Its unique crosslinking technology provides durability similar to hot melt thermoplastics and epoxies. ColorPave HD 500 is fortified with sand to provide slip resistance and added traction for both pedestrian and vehicle traffic. It is supplied in a neutral

New technology to make your
roof last longer
LEAKMASTER ROOFING

R
oofing products are constantly evolving as traditional materials, such as asphalt, are improved upon by cutting-edge science that creates fantastic new hybrids. LeakMaster Roofing installs all major systems and is constantly on the lookout for the latest technology that addresses the problems of the past. Most new benefits fall into one of two categories: they either last longer than previous products, or they make your home cooler. A cool roof is a happy roof because it doesn’t degrade as quickly because of “thermal shock” or UV damage.
Energy Star-rated asphalt shingles Most of the roofs in your neighborhood are probably asphalt shingles, or “comp shingles,” and there are many good reasons for their success. These shingles are moderately priced and perform very reliably when properly installed. Additionally, they are more forgiving to walk on than many of 16 | HAWAII RENOVATION | JULY 3, 2011
the other roof types. In short, they are a safe bet. However, traditional comp shingles can get very hot during the summers, when surface temperatures often exceed 170 degrees in the islands. This can leave your interior home temperature about 5 to 12 degrees hotter than normal. The latest Landmark Solaris shingles from CertainTeed are Energy Star-rated and qualify for a federal tax credit of $500. LeakMaster Roofing is finding a definite move toward cool roofs in general, and the Landmark Solaris is a popular new addition. The product has a mildew resistance warranty that’s good up to 15 years, and a warranty for damages caused by winds of up to 130 mph.
Acrylic vs. Silicone Leakmaster Roofing has been a leader in innovative roof coatings since 1990. The company has pushed for installing “full fabric-reinforced systems” at 4 to 5 gallons
per 100 square feet, instead of the more common unreinforced 2-3 gallon systems that inevitably fail. The company also pioneered Hawaiian SunGuard Ceramic Titanium roof coatings that keep you cool in the summer. Lately, there has been a big surge in silicone coatings because of their ability to withstand ponding water indefinitely. Past problems, such as the noxious smell from solvents that pollute the ozone, have been solved. LeakMaster’s new Hawaiian SunGuard Silicone is 95 percent solids and qualifies as a low VOC roof. That also means you get more coverage from our bucket versus the old solvent-based coatings. Because silicone is considered “nonsacrificial” — meaning it won’t chalk over time — its life span is very long. When applied properly by an approved installer, labor and warranties of up to 20 years are available. Call LeakMaster Roofing today to discuss the latest in roofing technology.
