5 ways to love your kitchen come from the kitchen. But what you may not know may surprise you. Whether you are shopping for yourself or for your significant other, here are five kitchen solutions you never knew you needed: ust when you thought the gift giving, indulgent eating of the holidays was over, Valentine’s Day pops right up. If you’re like me, you’d rather get a sentimental card and a good meal than a gift. Then again, I’m not necessarily your typical girl. While I can appreciate the beauty of a designer handbag, I’ve never understood the reasoning behind spending thousands on one. I’d rather have an item for the home that I’ll use every day and even get a return on investment for in the future. We all know that the biggest returns
J
1. Pull-down shelving. If you are short like me, or if you just want to maximize your space, consider this option and get rid of your step stool. This shelving pulls hard-to-reach items down and out from the cabinet, allowing you to reach them with ease. 2. Garbage disposal air switch. Why switch your switch? Safety. Because it uses a puff of air to turn on the disposal, the air switch eliminates the chance for electric shock that traditional wall switches pose.
Plus, it is usually mounted directly into the countertop near the sink, so you won’t have to worry about leaning over to turn on the disposal.
5. Elevator oven. Say goodbye to burns from the side of your oven. This wall-mounted oven’s bottom drops down to counterheight, allowing you to access it from multiple sides. It lifts back up with the touch of a button and even doubles as a cook top when left in the down position.
3. Dishwasher drawer. If you have a small household or run your dishwasher infrequently, this scaleddown appliance is for you. It takes up less space than its traditional counterpart and allows you to run half-loads without wasting precious resources.
When shopping for your home, keep in mind that the best products provide function and style that you can appreciate every day.
4. Pot-filler faucet. This is one your back will thank you for. A filled pot of water can weigh up to 20 pounds, and this faucet will eliminate the need to lug it from the sink to the stove. It also frees up the kitchen sink, allowing you to multitask.

Buying your first PV system N
ow that we are well into the new year, it’s time for home improvement projects. Remember when you bought your first car? Think about all those questions you asked yourself and the all-too-eager car salesman. How much to spend? Is it safe? How is it on gas? It’s almost like buying your first photovoltaic system (except solar doesn’t burn hydrocarbons). With competition in Hawaii’s solar energy industry heating up, your choice for PV contractors has grown and will only become more confusing. And it’s not like you can take a PV system out for a test drive. But with the right questions, you can take the contractor out for a “test drive.” Don’t let your enthusiasm for getting rid of electricity bills get the better of you. Sunetric presents these questions for you to ask your PV system contractor so you can collect your thoughts and make the smartest investment for your home. Does the contractor have a C-13 license and other solar-relevant cer tifications? Sunetric holds a number of license classifications, including a C-13 Electrical Contractors license. This means Sunetric employees are licensed to install the systems they sell. More so, Sunetric employees are NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) certified, which means that Sunetric specializes in PV. Also, make sure that the company is an HSEA-approved contractor.

ON THE COVER
SUNETRIC contact // 262-6600 address // 905 Kapaa Quarry Place web // Sunetric.com Who provides the warranty on the system? It’s best to choose a contractor who takes full responsibility for the design, installation and warranty, so issues don’t fall through the cracks. It’s also good to ask whether the company has been in the PV business for as long as the current warranty they are offering. At a minimum, the contractor must have survived at least one full warranty cycle to prove it’ll be there after the sale should you need it. Sunetric offers a six-year warranty and has been in business for more than eight years. How does the contractor measure expe-
rience in the business? Many companies tout cumulative years of experience. If Sunetric were to measure itself based on cumulative years, it would have more than 400 years. Other companies tout hours of training, but that is no substitute for years of experience. Don’t be misled by companies that talk about open permits. A real measure of success is the number of closed permits a company has. Also, ask how many megawatts they have installed in Hawaii. Sunetric has installed more than 50 MW of PV, which is more than three times more than any other company. What’s the contractor’s history with customers? Check with the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Professional and Licensing Division. With Sunetric, every job begins and ends with safety as a priority and core belief. Putting safety first — for those on the job and for the customers and their home — is standard operating procedure at Sunetric. What is the company’s warranty on workmanship? Sunetric offers a six-year warranty on all work performed on its installations. Furthermore, Sunetric’s highly trained roofing crews allow the company to offer a five-year warranty on your roof, whereas most other companies only offer one year or none at all. Additionally, most of the systems Sunetric installs come with
a 25-year warranty. Is the system sized properly? Don’t fall victim to companies playing the bait and switch game. Many companies will say that their smaller-sized systems can produce the equivalent of another company’s larger sized systems just to acquire your business, leaving you with a large portion of your original bill to HECO. An improperly sized system will affect its efficiency and indicates poor workmanship. Sunetric’s proprietary design tool is the result of more than eight years of refined calculations. Sunetric specializes in determining your needs and providing you with near exact solutions, so you can expect to receive that zero dollar bill you are looking for. “Going solar can seem like a complicated process,” said Alex Tiller, Sunetric’s chief executive officer. “However, if you ask the right questions and choose a company with a history of quality, relevant certifications and years of experience, solar can be the simplest decision you can make.” FEBRUARY 10, 2013 • 3

Everything you need to know about composite decking H ave you ever considered composite decking but disregarded the idea because you felt like you didn’t know enough about it? Maybe you’ve wondered how composite decking is made? Or what kinds of materials make up composite decking? Although composite decking is not new, lack of familiarity with the product may lead you to be confused when making a decision about the type of product you should choose for your deck. To make this decision-making process easier, it often helps to go back to the basics. So what is composite decking anyway? By definition, composite decking is a woodlike product that is created by the mixture of wood fibers, or sawdust, and virgin and recycled plastics. The combination of these elements along with color pigments and other protective additives, form a traditional wood-like decking profile that requires less maintenance than traditional wood decks. Many composite decking products are manufactured through a process called extrusion. This is defined as a forming process in which melted plastic and wood materials are forced through an opening to produce a product that maintains a relatively consistent size and shape. Weather resistance The density of a composite decking board helps protect the board from rot and decay caused by prolonged exposure to moisture. By keeping moisture out, this helps reduce mildew, insects and bacteria. Complementary colors The composite boards are also manufactured in a range of colors to perfectly complement any home. Instead of needing stain or paint, the colors are already added to the boards.

Durability Composite decking boards are manufactured to be stain resistant against certain common food and beverage stains, including mustard, ketchup, barbecue sauce, canola oil, fruit punch, wines and coffee. This stain resistance will preserve the life and beauty of the deck. Maintenance Composite decking does not require paint, stain or a sealer, reducing the overall maintenance of the deck. The best way to maintain a composite deck is to keep it swept, hose it off at least twice a year and attend to stains promptly. Overall, composite decking is a low maintenance product that has become a desirable alternative for outdoor living. Some composite deck products, like TAMKO’s Envision, add an extra layer of protection against weather, staining and scratching to preserve the natural beauty of the composite decking board. A home office that fuels productivity ne of the biggest mistakes businesspeople make is assuming that working from home will automatically result in a higher level of productivity. Unless you carefully construct your home office environment, you may find that working from home is less productive than you anticipated. The right office furniture, equipment and supplies Once you have decided whether you’re going to segregate an area of the living room, convert a spare bedroom or set yourself up in the basement or garage, you should start thinking about home office furniture. The type of office furniture you pick and the way you organize your space will significantly impact your productivity. Whatever your preferences are, investing money up front in the style of office furniture that makes you comfortable will naturally lead to greater productivity. The cost of outfitting a home office A basic home office setup can cost you under $500 if you already have a computer that you can relocate to your new space. The ideal working environment Home office setup is an exercise in knowing yourself. Before you make any decisions, make a list of the things you need to spur productivity. Some people can work at a desk in a common area of the house with the television running. Others want a closeddoor environment where distractions are minimized. For some people, a home office is a place to finish up work from a regular day job. For others, a home office is a primary workspace where they spend eight or more hours of the day. Before you start rearranging the furniture, decide what you need as an absolute minimum to encourage you to use the space as intended.
can round out a basic home office setup. A more advanced home office setup would include a fax machine and a photocopier. Fortunately, there are 3-in-1 office machines that combine a printer, fax and copier all in one piece of equipment for less than $300, saving you money and space. Keep in mind, however, that a machine that does many things often offers fewer features for each specific function. For example, if your work at home requires more than the occasional photocopy, it can be more efficient to buy a dedicated copy machine that has special functionality to handle a heavier workload. Don’t forget to set aside money in your home office budget for office supplies. From paper to paper clips, you will have to buy all of the little things that you took for granted when you worked for an employer.

Investing in your home’s future he recent BIA-Hawaii show was a great place to see a variety of home improvement products. It seems the interest level in the show has increased if you take the size of the crowd into consideration. There was also an apparent theme: If you want to save money, you have to spend money. This makes sense, right? There’s a well-known phrase that says if you buy quality, you buy once. If you buy price, you buy twice. Investing in home improvements is an essential part of homeownership. What happens if you never invest in your home other than just paying the mortgage? Ten years go by quickly and that leaky faucet is still leaking. Oftentimes, investing in one project per year insures that your investment will be more valuable than when you first purchased your home. One of the best ways to save money is to make your home environment more

BIA-HAWAII
The impact of Hawaii’s GET law on construction costs BY KAREN NAKAMURA n 2011, Act 105 became law and disallowed the exemption of Hawaii’s General Excise Tax (GET) on subcontractor work by the general contractor. This law is scheduled to be discontinued this summer. Act 105 causes the GET to be charged multiple times on the same GET already paid. This practice is called tax pyramiding. Since the inception of Hawaii’s GET, pyramiding was cautiously avoided by exempting services that triggers tax on tax situations. In Hawaii, the number of subcontractor licenses continues to grow with every new product or new way of work, due to a current state law. We have two types of general contractor licenses: “A” for general engineering contractors; and “B” for general building contractors, and more than 168 subcontractor licenses. Each type of license identifies work dedicated to a specific jurisdiction. For example there are different licenses for fencing depending on the type of fence: wood, vinyl, stone, glass and more. There are different licenses for roofing depending on the type of roof: wood shake, asphalt shingles, hot tar, metal, tile and more. Each type of license can be subject to multiple taxing of the GET depending on if a subcontractor uses
I
other subcontractors. Here’s an example: When a cabinet maker sells to a cabinet installer (first tax), and the installer sells the same cabinet with installation to a general contractor (second), and the general contractor sells the total job with cabinets and the installation to you, the consumer (third), the state Tax Collector gets the 4.5 percent GET three times on the same cabinet, which is ultimately passed on to the buyer. By allowing Act 105 to sunset June 30, contractors will be allowed to pay the 4.5 percent GET at the first level,
just once, and not continuously add the tax at each level. Contractors identify the amount the previous subcontractor has paid and deducts that from the amount due on the total sale. This practice lowers the cost of construction to you, the buyer. The state tax collector favors allowing this law to sunset. Rep. Sharon Har introduced HB 1194, which allows for the sunset of the subcontractor exemption. The Committee on Consumer Protection & Commerce had scheduled this bill for hearing earlier this week at the State Capitol. Rep. Sylvia Luke has introduced HB 1360, which would make permanent the suspension of the subcontractor exemption. It has a single-referral to the Finance Committee, of which she is chairwoman, and no hearing has yet been scheduled. Please write to your state representative to tell them to allow this law to sunset so construction costs can remain affordable in Hawaii. Karen Nakamura is executive vice president/CEO of the Building Industry Association of Hawaii.

An energy solution that’s just right ome homes have too much shading, others may have roofs that face the wrong direction. But for homes that fit certain criteria, installing a PV system is a really good idea. RevoluSun understands that every home is unique, just like the family that lives in it. This understanding is at the core of how the company approaches each customer when helping them with their solar system needs. It is RevoluSun’s goal to do “what’s best for the homeowner” every time. Jazz up your life with a Jacuzzi n today’s rigorous world, finding time to wind down and de-stress becomes more challenging. Sure, we live in Hawaii and we have a natural abundance of sunshine and water to play in, but sometimes after working all day, enduring a grueling drive home, picking the kids up and putting a meal on the table, whatever scrap of energy we had diminishes to negative numbers. Good luck with getting to the beach. Rather than quietly waiting for your weekend or next vacation, give yourself a few minutes to unwind every day by sliding into a Jacuzzi® and let the multitude of jets soothe your aching muscles and revitalize your mind. The Jacuzzi® was invented with healing as its intent. The Jacuzzi® family, with its background in engineering, created the first submersible pump to treat an ailing family member. From there, the Jacuzzi® has evolved into a household name known for its therapeutic baths and hot tubs, emerging as a leader in hydrotherapy. So what is hydrotherapy and what are its benefits? Hydrotherapy is the use of water to relieve pain and to promote well-being, and there are numerous benefits. The heat helps open blood vessels for increased circulation, and the therapeutic jets help relax

Shedding Old Skin, Habits Renew yourself through the following feng shui tips and make 2013 a year to remember
with
home with black, navy blue or dark green colors. 2. Besides the usual clearing and purging, as soon as possible clear outstanding debts and any misunderstandings between friends and family. Avoid brining this energy too deep into the coming year. 3. Set the intent for maximum wealth for the coming year. It always feels good to have lots of money in your wallet, so fill your wallet with cash today, making it appear stuffed and full, symbolizing the abundance you expect. 4. Wear something new today, representing a new outlook, a new you, and new beginnings. Red, the color of fire, symbolizes passion, joy and happiness, so, if you have no new clothes to wear, at least wear something red! 5. When you finish this article, open all the doors and windows and let the energy of 2012 move out so that new, inspirational, and fresh opportunities can be welcomed in for 2013. Then, take a few deep breaths, inhaling the new and exhaling the old.
Alice Inoue QUESTION OF THE WEEK: The Year of the Snake is coming up and I would like to know what you forecast for this year and why it is called the year of the “black” snake. That doesn’t sound very good! Also, I’ve always been curious as to how Chinese astrology and feng shui relate to each other as one is about the stars and the other about the home. Finally, what are some feng shui specific things I can do to best prepare for this year? appy Chinese New Year! Today, New Year’s Day in Chinese culture, is the perfect time to answer your questions! First, a “black” year has nothing to do with anything dark or ominous. Rather, it relates to the element associated with the snake this year. This year is the year of the water snake and, in Chinese art and culture, black represents water.
H
Understanding the year Understanding the animal provides insight into the energy and unique opportunities the upcoming snake year offers. The snake, powerful and ambitious, knows to shed its skin when it is time to renew itself, symbolizing intelligence, intuitiveness, gracefulness, wisdom and new beginnings. So, for many of us, this year can be transformative, a time to “shed the old,” letting go of anything that is holding us back — stagnant friendships, deadbeat situations and even bad habits. Things to keep in mind This year, like a snake, use your intuition to decide what is best for you; plan for what you want, rather than jumping into any situation that comes along, and seek peaceful surroundings, where you can be your most productive self. Subtle actions to take to maximize the year Chinese astrology, based on astronomy,
has a close relationship with the Chinese philosophy of feng shui (yin yang theory and the five elements). Ancient feng shui masters relied on astronomy to find a correspondence between the universe and the best positioning of energy for humans on earth. Astrologically, today marks the beginning of the energies of the year of the snake, pushing out the year of the dragon. Below are some emotional and mental perspectives you can adopt to help you enhance the energy of the snake year and some feng shui changes to prepare you for this new energy: New emotional, mental perspectives 1. Release any fear about the future and what the year will bring, as the year of the
snake will bring you everything you need. 2. To make the best of the snake energy year, be cautions in dealings with others and do your homework before you sign or get into anything. 3. The water snake is black like deep water, symbolizing a need for personal reflection, so make sure to schedule time with yourself and avoid getting caught up in the chaos that can take over your life. Feng shui actions to take in your home Take these feng shui actions to optimize your home and get ready for the year of the snake: 1. Welcome the incoming year with water energy in the form of colors, adoring your
Your year is up to you Celebrating a new year is about celebrating the change from the old to the new. What you do on New Year’s Day sets the intent for the rest of the year, but it is up to you to keep the momentum going. Don’t let this year be one in which you do the same old thing. This is a magnificent year for new awareness and inspired change! Let go of anything outdated, and, like a snake, shed your old skin!

Lighting makes a splash in the bath n an era when going away on vacation is not in the budget, many homeowners are finding it makes fiscal sense to turn the master bath into a spa environment with high-end amenities such as soaking tubs, saunas, whirlpools, granite countertops, double sinks, marble and tile flooring and his and her dressing areas. The finishing touch to a redecorated bathroom is complementary lighting that is highly functional and attractive.
I
“Everything in the bath has been upgraded except the lighting,” said George Chandler of lighting manufacturer Hubbardton Forge. “The right lighting will make the room. Without it, everything you purchased won’t look half as good.” Kellee Hollenback of Savoy House agreed. “People are making an investment and creating a retreat reminiscent of a hotel room at their favorite vacation spot,” Hollenback said. “Redoing the bathroom is an economical way to do a home makeover. Even simply installing a UL-listed shower light or a chandelier or spotlight over the tub can enhance both comfort and ambiance.” (UL-listed products have been tested and evaluated for safety by Underwriters Laboratories.) There are two must-haves for proper bath lighting: an ambient light source and task lighting. There has never been a better time to buy a decorative ambient fixture than right now. Lighting manufacturers have designed some truly elegant and highly functional fixtures that will set a luxurious atmosphere for the room and make your guests envious. “When selecting a decorative fixture, make sure you’re getting good light from it,” said Todd Phillips of lighting manufactur-
er Quoizel. “Overall, soft contemporary styles are leading the pack. We’re seeing the importance of a bronze finish on clean designs. There’s been great growth in vanity sinks, which often have matching hardware. This has led to a desire for lighting fixtures in a complementary bronze finish,” said Phillips. “We’re also noticing a trend in faucets with an antique or brushed nickel
finish.” Chrome is also a popular finish choice that will always be in vogue. “Today’s homeowners are looking for something unique and not the same thing they can find everywhere else,” added Ron Henderson of lighting manufacturer Varaluz. “They are carbon footprint-sensitive, and we use a lot of reclaimed and recycled materials in our bath fixtures.” The most critical area for proper lighting is at the mirror, where the majority of grooming tasks — from make-up application to shaving — takes place. Although many builders and interior decorators install one recessed light over the sink, lighting experts say this is not ideal for putting your best face forward. “The best scenario at the bathroom mirror is a lighting fixture at the top and two smaller wall-mounted fixtures located on either side of the mirror,” explained architect Joe Rey-Barreau, education consultant for the American Lighting Association (ALA), and an associate professor at the University of Kentucky’s School of Interior Design. “It is possible to add a recessed light over the sink as a supplementary light source, but it should never be the primary light because it will create shadows on the face. complement the over-the-sink light will evenly illuminate both sides of the face. Rey-Barreau recommends a minimum of 150 watts of incandescent lighting per sink, or 40 watts of fluorescent. “An alternative to a compact fluorescent is the halogen IRC by Osram, which is low-voltage and provides 28 lumens per watt. It gives a lot of light and gives good color so that skin doesn’t look washed out,” said Paul Eusterbrock of lighting manufacturer Holtkoetter International. “People need energy-efficient light that helps them look good.” And don’t forget a dimmer. Dimmers are essential for creating a soothing and comfortable environment. Installing a dimmer in your master bath is one of the easiest, least expensive and mood enhancing techniques you can do. “The reality is that the amount of light provided by typical vanity fixtures gives much more lighting than we need for the majority of times that we are in the bathroom,” said Rey-Barreau. “Once you have a dimmer, being able to adjust the light levels for different situations is amazingly practical.” A lighting specialist at any American Lighting Associationmember lighting showroom can explain all of the many options available for beautifying your bath.To find your closest ALA-member showroom, visit www.AmericanLighting Assoc.com. Trash vs. treasure: Hunting for authentic garage sale finds C ollecting relics isn’t a hobby just for Grandma and Grandpa any more. With the explosive popularity of TV shows centered around unearthing historic memorabilia and valuable pieces of Americana, searching for knickknacks and artifacts that make one-of-a-kind home decor is now a popular pastime for people of all ages. But how do you know the difference between what’s really treasure and what’s simply trash? Larry Singleton, decor manager at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Inc., is an expert when it comes to collecting historic relics. Singleton and his family have been collecting for more than 40 years, providing real American artifacts, memorabilia and signage to the more than 600 Cracker Barrel Old Country Store locations nationwide. He offers these insightful tips for the next time you’re on the hunt at a garage sale, flea market or thrift store:
1. Research and learn Research and learn as much as you can before you shop. Watch TV shows, search on the Internet, visit local collector’s stores. Discovering what’s valuable and knowing what’s currently in-demand helps guide you in making that “big discovery.” It’s important to be willing to invest the time and never be afraid to ask questions. 2. Know your interests If you have an interest in a particular type of item — such as vintage advertise-

ty of monetary value, other historic relics might be valuable simply because of the story they tell. Seeking historic artifacts and memorabilia provides a piece of decor that is more than just pretty; it’s a conversation piece when guests visit your home. ments, folk art or children’s toys — familiarize yourself with what makes a piece authentic and what might indicate a reproduction. Plus when you have a personal interest in the item you’re seeking, the hunt becomes that much more fun. 3. Keep a smartphone close A smartphone can be a treasure
hunter’s best friend because you can conduct research quickly while on location. You can also research similar items to compare prices and see if the price is reasonable or inflated. 4. Know an expert Keep an expert’s number on hand — every collector runs into questions and having a knowledgeable contact you can call or to whom you can send a picture is invaluable. Good resources include community associations, historical societies and friends or family members.
These expert tips are what Singleton follows to find the authentic memorabilia that decorates all Cracker Barrel locations. Each store has about 1,000 artifacts displayed, giving patrons a taste of American history. You, too, can create an interior space that pairs modern comfort with the panache that only unique historic relics can bring to a home’s decor. Start your own treasure hunt today. 5. Network One of the best ways to learn about items as well as where to find them is to talk to like-minded people. Treasure hunters and collectors love to share info on what they collect, buy and sell. Use this information (and camaraderie) to your advantage. 6. Know the story While some items might have plen-

HAWAII HARDWOOD FLOORING
A complete package in hardwood flooring BY KYLE GALDEIRA s is the case with most renovation and remodeling projects, when one buys a pre-finished hardwood floor, it needs to be accessorized. Hawaii Hardwood Flooring brings more than 30 years of experience to every flooring project it takes on, and President Chris Brenna makes it a priority to offer customers a multitude of residential and commercial flooring options. As it continues to transition from the original Kalihi location to a new home down the road at 1727 Republican St., Hawaii Hardwood Flooring is offering up to 70 percent off a wide range of flooring products and accessories. So, as the company moves into its new digs, customers can move some high-quality flooring upgrades into their homes and still have enough money left over to tackle other home improvement projects. Customers are shepherded through the pre-planning and consulting process by the friendly staff at Hawaii Hardwood Flooring. owners can refinish an existing flooring system for just $4.75 per square foot. The company features three installation teams and three sanding and finishing teams that take the worry, stress and mess out of the installation process. Brenna explained that with each flooring project, certain accessories are needed to complete the overall look and feel of the upgrade. “When you buy a new, pre-finished hardwood floor for your home, there are accessories needed to finish the job, Brenna said. “In Hawaii, sometimes it’s hard to get a hold of the right molding for your floor, but we’re stocking them now. Hawaii Hardwood Flooring offers moldings for a variety of different floors. We have them in stock, and they can be used with any engineered floor. One of the more popular types of molding is the T-Molding, which are used to transition from wood to tile, and also in doorways where wood flooring is added to an existing wood floor style, or if there are directional changes in different rooms. It allows for different surfaces on the same

End caps, which are also referred to as square noses, are used for wood-to-carpet transitions and doorways, and also for sliding glass door-to-wood transitions. Baby thresholds and thresholds do the same thing, only they are usually wider and have more of a gradual slope from the raised surface to the lower one. Reducers are used in situations where the flooring style goes from wood to vinyl, wood to concrete, or wood to sliding glass door tracks that are lower than the floor — basically anything
lower than the floor that’s being connected to. In this case, one needs to “step down gradually, and this type of molding provides the appropriate transition. Hawaii Hardwood Flooring also offers trim molding to go around walls, including quarter round, which provides a smooth, rounded edge at the point where floor meets wall, and baseboards which give some “bling and pop when matching walls with a hardwood floor. Small energy improvements to help you save big money T he beginning of the year is a great time to make positive changes in your home. While many will wait a while before embracing “spring cleaning” and making home improvements, a few simple changes can be made now to help you conserve energy and start saving money right away. Here are some steps that can help lower energy consumption — and associated costs — in your home this month and throughout the year: Turn your house into a “smart home” From cooling to ceiling fans, lighting and security systems, homes can now be wired for a number of automated functions to optimize the energy consumed by the systems they run. “Smart home” technology, like the ADT Pulse home automation system, can help
save homeowners money by allowing customers to remotely manage thermostats and lighting controls. In addition to helping protect homes against intrusion, fire, flood and dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, integrated home automation systems can help users plan ahead to create schedules to turn off lights when they’re not needed, or decrease cooling settings when no one is home. In fact, according to ENERGY STAR’s website, using a programmable thermostat alone can save up to $180 a year in energy costs. Users can control their home automation system either through in-home panels, or through smartphones, tablets and computers. Don’t forget the basics Every home requires sealing, which is well within the abilities of most do-it-yourselfers, but you can also hire a professional to:
• Seal air leaks around windows and doors to prevent drafts. • Replace old, inefficient, wornout or damaged windows. • Seal cooling system air ducts. Lower your light bills If your home is like the average American household, a significant portion of your energy bill each month could be attributed to lighting costs. Since you need a basic amount of light to function in your home, reducing the number of light sources is probably not an option. Instead, look to reduce the amount of energy needed to power the lights in your home, or increase the amount of natural light that enters the house. Start by replacing incandescent bulbs — which are energy inefficient — with energy-saving bulbs. Energy.gov says replacing
just 15 incandescent bulbs could save you about $50 a year. Energy efficient bulb options include halogen, CFLs and LEDs. And while some homeowners may balk at the higher initial cost of these types of bulbs, keep in mind that CFLs last 10 times longer and use a quarter of the energy of traditional incandescent bulbs, according to Energy.gov. LEDs are even more energy efficient, lasting 25 times longer. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

CV CONSTRUCTION
Catering to your renovation needs BY VICTOR YEUNG here are so many things to consider and do before, during and after a renovation. Having a contractor control the flow of the project will help make sure it goes according to plan and finishes within the time promised. CV Construction LLC is just that type of company. A recent project involved a homeowner and serviceman who, just before he was deployed, contacted me about our services. When I went to complete the free estimate, he had already been deployed, so his wife walked me through their renovation request. I then drafted an estimate on site and explained it to the homeowner’s wife from beginning to end. After a few email exchanges with the deployed husband, the couple settled on what they wanted in their renovation. I had the wife come to our showroom to look at some samples and finalize the contract. Then

After the project was completed, I found out that her father did a similar renovation (not in Hawaii) and was amazed at the speed and quality of this project. CV Construction LLC strives to exceed the expectations of the homeowner with each project. BIG ROCK FEBRUARY 10 • 2013 19
Unique cast stones will ‘Rock’ you ig Rock is an exceptional store in Honolulu that manufactures and sells various products that are not available anywhere else in the world. It specializes in making copies of our Hawaiian stones and has been doing so for 30 years. There is no other business like it! You can’t imagine how many rocks, boulders and pieces of stone the owners, Bonnie Cooper and Brian Joy have accumulated throughout the 30 years, and they are always adding to the collection. Some of the beautiful stone bowls and unusual boulders have been lent by homeowners who have seen and appreciated the quality of the copies and want to contribute to the collection. Molds are taken from the original pieces they find, and then reproductions are cast in a lightweight concrete. There is unquestionably no way a person can tell the difference between Big Rock and the real thing, and just think of how much of our islands’ natural stone has been conserved through Big Rock’s method of casting copies. Even after 30 years here on Oahu there are still many people that may have heard about Big Rock, but have never taken the time to visit its showroom, and Bonnie and Brian confirm this each time they participate in one of Oahu’s many trade shows. “The

people are always excited and impressed with the few things they see at our show displays, but admit they have not been to the store. Once they come, they are happy they did and always spread the word to friends and neighbors,” the owners said. Why would you use Big Rock? Well, it is much lighter in weight than real rock. For
example, the boulders do not have to be dug into the ground as they already have a flat bottom. The moss rock stepping stones are 3-inches thick and ready-to-place, but they look as though you have miraculously found natural rock for a pathway that is flat. The stone items can be used to dress up lanais too, surrounded with a bit of river rock and
perhaps a small fountain. Big Rock stone veneer is used to cover any and all wall surfaces, giving you a natural stone wall appearance, but it’s only about 1 1/2inches thick, lightweight and easy-to-install. Actually, all Big Rock stone products are easy to use, and Brian and Bonnie always try to encourage homeowners to consider doing the work themselves, whether it’s a rock wall or garden project. But if you’d prefer someone else do the job, landscapers use Big Rock with the assurance that they are not using rocks taken from a sacred heiau. The masonry contractors love to install the easy-to-use stone veneer, too. Big Rock has stone veneer, stone benches and tables, boulders, stone bowls of many sizes, bridges, garden edgers, ponds, waterfall boulders, garden ornaments, Buddhas, tikis and much more. Of course, not everything at Big Rock is made there. Some garden accent pieces and other goodies are brought in, such as a variety of rain chains, Japanese-style lanterns, bamboo fountain kits, pond pumps, liners, filters, underwater lighting, birdbaths, decorative fountains and more than a dozen pre-cast waterfalls. See how 30 years of being Hawaii’s “Rock Stars” have made Big Rock famous for the quality and uniqueness of its products.

Accessibility issues spark innovation D riven by a growing senior population, soldiers returning home injured from war and the ongoing obesity epidemic, mobility and home accessibility issues are becoming more commonplace in America. In response, companies today are creating innovative home solutions that focus on both improved form and function, and serve to create welcome alternatives to traditional solutions for homeowners with mobility and home access challenges. Because many of these new solutions are designed to blend into one’s everyday life and complement nearly any style, the functional benefits they provide can be easy to miss. The home improvement experts at Lowe’s offer tips to enhance the look and accessibility of nearly any home. Function hidden in plain sight Once only found in public buildings such as offices and schools, lever-style door handles have become a standard option for residential homes. But it’s not just the look of these handles that makes them a desirable alternative to standard knobs — it’s
the function. Lever-style handles are easier to grip than standard doorknobs making them a preferred alternative for anyone that’s ever tried to grip a standard knob from a seated position in a wheelchair, while juggling an armful of groceries, or while suffering from arthritis. Delta has taken things one step further with the introduction of touch faucets that feature classic designs with updated technology to make turning water on and off more effortless than ever before. Looks do matter Traditional aluminum ramps may be functional, but they hardly blend into the overall look or style of a home. In the past, the only way to achieve a stylish and custom look was with a specially designed and constructed wood ramp, but a solution has been found that makes a custom look easier to achieve and install. Lowe’s Gatehouse Custom Access Ramp System, for example, allows professionals and do-it-yourselfers to install the system in less time than a custom wood ramp, and the modular ramp can be con-
figured with right, left or u-turns to fit the accessibility needs of users and the style of the home. Coordinating caps, balusters, post sleeves and railings give the system a
pleasing, custom look. The system also allows owners to remove, relocate and reuse the ramp if they move to a different home.

Small spaces, big innovations Most in-home falls occur in the bathroom and, especially amongst the elderly, are one of the leading causes of hospitalization. At the same time, bathrooms tend to be the smallest rooms in a home making these spaces especially challenging to navigate for those with mobility challenges. With these challenges in mind, bathrooms have become an especially rich area of innovation in recent years. The emergence of multifunctional and fully integrated solutions leads the trend in bathroom accessibility improvements. One of the simplest solutions has been the introduction of “chair height” toilets, which, because of their higher bowl height versus standard toilets, provide better leverage when standing from a seated position. Grab bars are also evolving to include designs that seamlessly integrate two products into one stylish solution, such as Moen’s grab bars that dually function as a towel rack or toilet paper holder. Standard tubs and vanities, which tend to create barriers to use for those with mobility issues, have gotten their share of atten-
tion too. Wall-mounted sinks, which can be accessed from a seated position, have benefitted from style updates and easier installation than past models. Retrofitting tubs to create easier-to-access shower enclosures has also become simpler with new innovations in factoryinstalled shower seats, grab bars and shower valves. Home accessibility improvements can help you enjoy your home safely for as long as possible and new products and solutions are making accessibility easier to enjoy than ever before. ALL ISLAND BATH REMODELING LLC Over 20 Years Experience Locally Owned & Operated
Weekend projects for DIYers that add value, curb appeal W eekend warriors rule as 2013 is proving to be the year that the do-it-yourself trend reaches full momentum. If you have a weekend to spare, you have plenty of time to make some home improvements that add value and curb appeal. The key is to choose projects that have a big impact, but only take a few days to complete. The first step in preparing for any home improvement project is ensuring you have all the right tools and supplies. If you need project-specific tools, it may make sense to rent them rather than buy, depending on how many times you plan to use them. Next, head to a home improvement store for supplies. An invaluable tool for weekend warriors is the Adarac Truck Bed Rack System. This removable rack is compatible with most inside-the-rail tonneau covers and can be quickly added to your specific truck model within minutes. The system provides a sturdy framework that carries a 500-pound load with ease — perfect for ladders, boxes, lumber, pipes and more. Consider these projects that can be done in one weekend — each will add impressive curb appeal while enhancing your home’s overall value: Garage door upgrade One of the largest focal points of a house’s exterior is the garage door, yet it’s often overlooked when it comes time to consider home improvements. An old garage door with dings, scratches and dents can be an eyesore that dates a home. A new garage door can give your house’s facade a stylish facelift, revamping the home’s look instantly. Modern options are convenient to install and operate, and are sure to impress neighbors, guests and potential buyers, if you are selling. Create a grand welcome Many people use their garage entranceway as the main way to enter their home, so it’s easy to forget about the experience of entering through the front door. That’s why it’s important to take a moment to walk to your home .EW (OME #ONSTRUCTION s .EW !DDITION s 2ENOVATION s (OLLOW 4ILE 7ALL s $EMOLITION

through the main entrance, like a guest or potential buyer would. Is the experience warm and welcoming, or drab and dated? If the entrance path to your home is less than stellar, a few upgrades will improve it tremendously. Trim overgrown hedges, paint stairs or railways and consider replacing your entry door — a new steel entry door has an impressive 85 percent return on investment. Use your Adarac Truck Bed Rack to move all the supplies, which is simple with the multitude of tie-down points that run the entire length of the system. Reseal the driveway A cracked, faded driveway can make your property look older than it really is. If you have an asphalt driveway, it’s easy to refresh it without a complete replacement or upgrade to concrete. Sealing, while messy, is achievable for even modest DIYers, helping to extend the life of your driveway while adding an attractive cohesive black appearance. Visit your local home improvement store for all necessary supplies. Remember to fill cracks and holes before brushing the sealer over the surface of the driveway. Keep in mind that older driveways that have not been resurfaced may require two coats This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

quality cabinetry, granite countertops and stainless steel sinks. “We have a lot of products in stock and are ready to assist with all sorts of construction and remodeling projects, including kitchen and bathroom upgrades.” C&C Cabinets Granite offers seven cabinetry color choices — available in both framed and frameless construction — including Burgundy Cherry, Wheat Maple, Cinnamon Maple and Sunset Cherry.
