very now and then, the scrapbooking bug bites me. Sometimes I scrapbook to save memories, but I also like to clip and save ideas for the future. There’s something incredibly indulgent about dreaming and planning. A magazine hoarder at heart, I often clip and save articles and pictures for future holiday, wedding and baby shower presents, outfits, meals and, of course, my dream home.

My dream home isn’t without its indulgences: his-and-her bathrooms and closets, furniture I’ll probably never afford and a spacious, drool-worthy kitchen. But it’s not without its practical points, too: handwritten recipes featured as art, salvaged-wood tables and energy-saving features. Yes, my wish list includes a home that doesn’t tote a huge electric bill and that also doesn’t hurt the environment. Green home

Diamond Head Windows & Doors
Clarify your window options by going to one convenient place I
f you are looking to replace windows and doors in your home, where do you start? There are a number of window retailers and contractors in Hawaii to choose from. The majority of these companies carry one or two major brands or the brand they manufacture. The salespeople for these companies will then highlight what features their products have that they think are unique or better than their competitor’s. The problem the consumer faces when trying to decide which window to choose is what is best for their home. Which of these features or benefits is in fact needed, how do they compare to other brands, and which ones work best in Hawaii? Diamond Head Windows & Doors offers more than 25 years of experience in the window business. In that time, it has installed more than 80 percent of the window brands currently available in
Hawaii and is familiar not only with the features of each, but more importantly, with how they hold up in a coastal climate that has heavy salt content in the

atmosphere, high ultraviolet light (the light that destroys building materials as well as your furniture, window coverings and floors) and heavy rainfall.
HR COVER STORY APRIL 21 • 2013 3
Unlike most dealers, the company can offer you a selection of five different brands of windows, show you side-byside comparisons of how each differs and rate the variance in price and durability among them. In addition, Diamond Head Windows & Doors made contracts with many of these manufacturers to produce a special coastal package for Hawaii with stainlesssteel hardware, heavy-duty screens, Neat glass (for easy cleaning) and superior systems to keep heavy rain from getting inside your home. While window representatives can make whatever claims or assurances they want to, the proof is in the warranty. What is in writing — especially the fine print? And how stable is the manufacturer who is backing the warranty? After years of installing windows in Hawaii and meeting with customers, the company has come up with a system that allows you to make an informed decision. Call president Mark McKinstr y at Diamond Head Windows & Doors to set up a free consultation and estimate. He can determine what your needs are, survey the condition of your home and recommend brands and products that fit your needs as well as the demands of the environment in Hawaii. Take advantage of the company’s spring pricing and recycle rebates as well as its factory direct pricing so you get the best value. Call Mark at 799-8979 to set up a consultation. You can see for yourself why Diamond Head Windows & Doors is Hawaii’s choice for quality windows, doors and siding.

APRIL 21 • 2013 ESSENTIAL CABINET REFACING INC.
An ‘Essential’ facelift for your cabinetry I t’s time to give that kitchen — the most visited room in the house — a new look. Since you are spending so much time there, don’t you deserve a room that is efficient, modern and pleasant? Undoubtedly you want to make improvements that make sense and fall within your budget. You also want quality within a price you can afford. Most of all, you need an experienced licensed contractor who has proven to be capable of completing the job at an affordable price time and time again. Essential Cabinet Refacing Inc. (ECR) is in its 23nd year of business. For owners Ringo and Michele Pauly, the first advice they got as young entrepreneurs came from Lex Brodie, who encouraged them to run their business with integrity. To them, this meant listening to their customers, sharing their remodeling exper tise with clients to ensure the job performed was the right match for the customer and doing the job at a competitive, yet fair price. Since then, their mission has been to have satisfied customers at the end of every project. Over the years, materials and remodeling methods have changed a great deal. ECR has kept current in the industry and offers up-to-date styles, designs and materials. ECR has offered refacing as an economical option for upgrading cabinets since 1989. Refacing is the method of giving cabinets a “facelift without going through the time
and expense of ripping out existing cabinets and installing new ones. Since the doors and drawers are replaced, the exterior of the cabinets is brand new and gives a modernized look. The interior remains the same and a lot of money is saved. This gives customers the freedom to increase their budget and add features such as new countertops, appliances or special features like rolling pull-out drawers. As the customers’ needs changed, ECR has continued to expand on its scope of work to include new custom-built cabinets and countertops. Custom cabinets are locally built in ECR’s shop. Owners have their choice of materials in the cabinet structure, hardware and exterior finish. Countertops come in almost any material customers desire. ECR is located at 212 Mohonua Place. Showroom hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 847-7835 or visit www.essentialcabinetrefacing.com. Come see Essential Cabinet Refacing Inc. at the 2013 Spring Home, Garden and New Products Show from Friday, April 25, to Sunday, April 28, at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Estimates are always free. If you sign up for an estimate at the home show and choose ECR for your project, the company will give you 10 percent off your estimate. This offer will only be valid until May 20.

Putting Hawaii in the limelight once again I n the late 1800s, King Kalakaua introduced electricity to ‘Iolani Palace before anywhere in the entire Unites States was privileged enough to have it. Notable dignitaries would visit from around the world and marvel at how a small and isolated island kingdom could possess such innovative technology. More than 120 years later, Hawaii is in the limelight again as the first in the nation to introduce a new kind of technology to the residential solar market. Solar Frontier CIS (denotes copper, indium, selenium) thin film PV modules are completely

made and manufactured in Japan and combine economical and ecological solutions for the PV consumer. Hawaii’s very own Risource Energy is the No. 1 authorized dealer to install these premium CIS modules. Having the foresight to research and bring this latest technology to light, Risource Energy president Darren Furumoto said, “Consumers deserve the best and latest technology and that’s exactly what Solar Frontier CIS panels have to offer. Backing up Furumoto’s vision is lead installer Dave Serrao, who said CIS panels are “smaller and easier to design on your rooftop and allow for quick and easy maneuvering, which is required by various safety codes ... their esthetic construction is very sleek and attractive to incorporate a unique design in their circuitry that allows for efficiency, even in shadowy conditions. In addition to the advanced technology, Furumoto said, “Consumers can create the ideal sustainable lifestyle, taking responsibility for their own carbon footprint and saving money in the process. Solar Frontier’s eco-conscious outlook ships lead- and cadmium-free panels in reusable packing materials all over the world, with no special recycling requirements needed.

The smooth operators arage doors are available in galvanized steel, vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Most doors are available one-sided with insulation or twosided with insulation. Even a modest new one-sided garage door will allow a homeowner to recoup well above the door cost in added resale value to the house. Higher priced specialty aluminum and wood doors will add a modest amount to the house value above the cost of the door and well in excess of the cost recouped by other home-renovation projects. The hardest working part of the garage door system is the operator and Servco Raynor offers a wide variety of garage door operators. These products are included with new doors or can be installed on your existing garage door to replace your old, noisy operator. Liftmaster, Linear and Sommers garage door operators are featured and instock at all times.Traditional trolley style operators are belt or chain driven. Most home-

owners select the belt drive operator because it is quieter and the belt and internal motor come with a lifetime warranty. Operators are also available with back-up battery power to open and close your garage door during power failures. The latest technology features operators with a DC motor belt drive system that is ultra quiet, durable and maintenance-free.

Servco Raynor stocks the Liftmaster 8550 and Linear LDCO 800, which have the equivalent power of a 3/4 HP belt drive operator. The revolutionary design of the German engineered Sommer Synoris operators equal the quietest operators available and have only one moving part and no belt. REVOLUSUN APRIL 21 • 2013 9
A company that pays attention to detail A s George Playdon Jr.’s HECO bill approached $1,000 per month, he worked on various ways to decrease his electric bill: He changed his appliances, light bulbs, pool pump and so on. Finally, he decided to investigate solar as the ultimate solution, soliciting and methodically reviewing bids from several local vendors. “RevoluSun gave us a responsive, knowledgeable bid designed for our specific needs, Playdon recalled. “They installed the system on time, keeping us posted on all developments and recommending changes when appropriate. The team that worked with us had the highest degree of expertise and professionalism. Long-term investment Solar is an integral addition to the home that affects the roof and electrical system, and it must be optimized for the integrity of the

home’s structure. Since the solar system is installed on the roof and a roof is a long-term investment, it is important to use the least invasive installation method. A bargain price today may mean costly repairs tomorrow. Superior racking system To accommodate changes in weather, a roof will expand and contract about a quarter of an inch, so the movement can cause weak framing to come loose. An advantage of RevoluSun’s SunFrame racks
is that they sit low against the roof with just enough room to allow a cooling airflow, which optimizes module performance. “The racking runs continuously around your panels and will keep them in place throughout all changes in weather and your roof, explained RevoluSun’s director of operations Scott Rodgerson, “and with SunFrame racking there are 33 percent less pukas in the roof, which means fewer opportunities for leaks.
Professional installation RevoluSun only works with experienced electricians and highly trained specialists, and installations will be completed high above industry standards. One element to note in RevoluSun’s process is the continuous wiring, which protects against hot spots that can cause system efficiency to drop. In addition, the RevoluSun Power Production Warranty and NABCEP Certification guarantee the highest level of quality and service.

ISLAND STYLE FURNISHINGS
Giving your lanai a look that’s stylish and durable W hen it comes to choosing outdoor furniture for your patio or lanai, there are several choices available at Island Style Furnishings in Kaneohe. There are synthetic woven products with aluminum frames, powder-coated aluminum furniture with fabric seats and glass-top tables, low-cost plastic deck furniture and solid wood patio pieces, namely teak furniture. All these choices have advantages and disadvantages as well as differences in price. Most folks prefer the classic look and feel of solid wood outdoor furniture. There are many things to consider when choosing the right solid wood lanai furniture such as cost, wood type, hardware quality, finish, warranty and maintenance requirements. Island Style Furnishings has teamed up with a company named Australis Leisure headquartered in Brisbane Australia, which designs and manufactures solid wood allweather furniture. It has been producing merbau wood furniture to survive harsh conditions across Australia and the world for more than 30 years. Island Style Furnishings has been tailoring this high-quality furniture to meet the specific and demanding conditions found here in Hawaii. Merbau wood (also known as kwila) is regarded as one of the most durable and stable timbers in the world. It grows in Northern Australia and across Southeast Asia. It is well known as the wood-of-choice for building docks, decks and flooring. Perfect for outdoor furniture, it is twice as hard as teak, which makes it resistant to

Got Inspiration? Getting motivated to make positive changes in your life may require a kickstart by finding the inspiration from within
and are still not “feeling it,” you haven’t written enough. Keep envisioning the potential benefits and writing until you reach a point where you are inspired. You will know when that happens because you will take action, and it will not feel like a chore.
with
Alice Inoue
QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I love reading your positive guidance-filled articles each week and enjoy the insight and stories. I really value what you say and it makes so much sense the way you explain it. However, I feel increasingly frustrated with myself because I just can’t get motivated to make the changes, even though I know I should create a better environment for my family and me. If knowledge is power, I wonder why I am so powerless when it comes to this. What is your take?
ou are not truly powerless. You simply lack inspiration and a strong enough reason to make the changes you want to make. Even though what you read sounds desirable and makes sense, in reality, you are not inspired to act. Our human nature is to change only when we have to, because change is uncomfortable.
Y
We always do what we want I make a distinction between motivation and inspiration. Motivation requires external prodding, but inspiration is internal, coming from the heart. When something appeals to your emotions, you tend to be inspired. Ultimately, we always do what we want, what we feel. That philosophy goes along with a core concept I teach — that people always have the time, money and energy to do the things they want to do, or are inspired to do. For example, if I invited you to a concert with musicians you were not crazy about, you would likely respond to my invitation with something like, “Oh! Thank you, but I can’t. I’m so busy these days, and we are watching our spending, etc.”You are neither motivated by the offer nor inspired by the musicians. However, if I asked you to spend $100 of your own money to attend a concert with me involving musicians that you absolutely loved, you are more likely to accept the invitation. In your case, when making feng shui
changes to your home, the effort to get out of your comfort zone and make the changes you read about is just not inspiring enough. To be inspired, you have to feel it in your heart. Getting stuck between motivation and inspiration Many people get stuck, not taking action, even when they say and think they want to. You can address this in two ways. One is to find the inspiration in the advantages you would receive by making changes to your home. The other is to make peace with your lack of inspiration. The key is to come to balance, and let go of the frustration and judgment about your inaction. When you are inspired to change, you will. Stack up the benefits of taking action If you resist taking action on something you feel you want to do, stack up the benefits and shift your perspective from external motivation to internal inspiration. When you are inspired to do something, external motivation is transformed into heart-centered action.
Writing down the benefits of what you stand to gain will change your perspective and lead to inspiration, making the achievement of your goal more likely. Title the page, “The benefits of making feng shui changes in my home.” Your list might contain some of these reasons. “I will feel better, have more energy, be less grouchy, feel as if I have accomplished something, be part of creating a better energy at home for my family and refresh my spirit. Then take it one step further. “If I have more energy, I will be more patient, snap at my children less often, avoid senseless bickering and create increased peace in the home. In a peaceful environment my children will thrive and I can be more productive.” If you have written down the benefits
“I just want to drop it” If writing down all the benefits feels like too much work, strive toward getting “should” out of your vocabulary and reframe your mindset, viewing your situation as perfect for where you are in your journey at the time! No one says you “have to” do anything! When you hear yourself using words like “should,” you are probably living by someone else’s rules, an outside authority showing up as an illusory inner voice, telling you what you should do. Your true inner voice never uses the word should. Coming from a more balanced space, you will feel the lightness when you hear it. Perhaps someone in your past told you that a good mother or wife does everything she can to create a good home and you bought into that, subconsciously believing that you have to make changes to your home to prove what a good homemaker you are. Nonsense! Take a step back and question that “inner voice” when you hear it. If it is inspiring and light, void of judgment, it is probably genuine; but, if it is filled with “shoulds,” admonitions, and fear, it is probably your ego speaking, leading you somewhere you don’t want to go. When you learn to discern your inner voice from your ego, you will find change less burdensome, as your life transforms in positive ways.

upgrades extend beyond photovoltaics (which use the sun to create electricity) and can be found in every area of the home.
In the bedroom Ceiling fans work wonders. They’re more efficient at cooling a room than a standing fan, and they use drastically less electricity than A/C. If A/C is a must, opt for ENERGY STAR® units.
In the kitchen ENERGY STAR® appliances are a must, but an induction cook top doesn’t hurt, either. Unlike traditional cook tops, induction varieties heat only the pot or pan. This means there is no heat transfer from the cook top to the pot, which also means the air around the pot remains cool. This cuts down not only on potential burn injuries but also on cooling costs. In the bathroom On-demand water heaters can cut down on both water and electricity use. A traditional water heater heats a large supply of water, holds a reserve
In the living room Skylights brighten up any space. Natural light costs nothing and can enhance physical wellbeing. Have a second story above your living room? No problem. Tubular lighting uses reflectors and a tube to carry natural light into rooms without direct roof access. (and uses electricity to maintain its temperature) and then releases the water to faucets around the home. An on-demand heater on the other hand, is installed under the sink. It heats

Freshen up with fabulous colors fresh coat of paint can give any room an instant lift, making it a great solution for converting a space from drab to fab. Though neutrals reign as America’s most popular paint choices, the National Home Color Survey from SherwinWilliams shows people are becoming bolder with color. “Colorful paint is an easy and inexpensive way to stylishly transform a space,” said David Bromstad, HGTV® star and
A
celebrity interior designer. Bromstad offers the following tips for anyone looking to add color to their home: • Identify a colorful object as the focal point of the room. Select bold items to build your room around, such as a piece of artwork, rug or chair that really makes a statement. • Use a color palette to guide design choices. HGTV® HOME by Sherwin-Williams takes the guesswork out of choosing colors with coordinated collections of color, paint
and wallpaper designed to flow beautifully throughout your home. Mix and match the colors to help guide your wall, furniture and accessory color choices.
• Coordinate your color transitions. For high-impact transitions, combine bolder shades with their more neutral counterparts, and for a more tranquil transition, stick to softer or lighter shades that are from the same color family. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

don’t know about you, but the rainy, voggy weather we’ve had lately has got me feeling the blues. So for this column, I want to talk about a color that’s anything but blue. Let’s talk about yellow! Yellow is the color of happiness. Of course it is — it’s the color of sunshine. It’s a positive, cheerful color that can’t help but brighten any mood. When it comes to decorating, yellow has always been popular because it not only brightens a space and makes it feel bigger, but also makes it feel cozier and more relaxing. There are hundreds of shades including butter cream, saffron, lemon and neon yellow. Picking the right one can either flood your interiors with brilliant sunshine or add just the right sophisticated glow. Yellows are said to improve memory and inspire creativity. So why not in a home office? How about the kitchen? And yellow is absolutely perfect for kids’ rooms. Yellows, blues and whites make for awesome nautical or sport themes for boys. Yellows, lavenders and pinks can be either super-feminine or diva-ish when paired with sparkle and shine. This color can be a little tricky, however. In certain lighting, some shades can take on a greenish tinge. Try out a swatch of paint (or paint a sample on a large board) and put it in the room at different times of day to see how it looks in the light. As with any color, you have your warmer and cooler shades. For warm combos, think of sunsets: Warm, muted yellows work very well with bronze and brown tones, as well as golds and terra cottas. Cool yellows combine very well with apple greens, sky blues and charcoals and silvers. Yellow is also very hot in conjunction
Let the Sunshine in There’s no better way to add a fun pop of color to your home design, not to mention brighten your mood, than to let yellow light up your space

with its popular partner of the moment, gray. You’ve seen me use this combination in several design projects lately. The yellow and gray pairing definitely adds a modern element, especially when you can tie in reclaimed wood and metal elements. As you can see in this page’s photos, I wanted to remain neutral when I staged a model apartment unit recently. An ikat fabric combining charcoal, white and yel-
low presented just the right touch of urban chic that would appeal to a man or a woman. I threw a bit of that yellow on the opposite wall to reinforce the color, and added a little spark of whimsy — a rotary-dial yellow telephone — to finish it off. Even in my showroom, the color I chose to ground the center stage space was yellow. The yellow pebble wool rug grounds a seating area and gives it a fresh, modern feel. So if you’re looking for a color to paint on a wall or to just bring in a little accent, take another look at yellow — and let the sunshine in!

Remodeling tips to help you celebrate life in the kitchen T own & Country Builders LLC is a licensed general contracting design build firm that has been serving Oahu for the past 32 years in the construction industry. It specializes in custom homes, remodels, additions, designer kitchens, bathrooms, Americans with Disability Act (ADA) modifications/improvements, construction of package homes and offers full construction services. Spring is a great time to plant a garden so that you can have an abundance of fresh herbs and vegetables to cook in your newly renovated kitchen. Here are some remodeling tips to make the most out of your kitchen:
TOWN & COUNTRY BUILDERS LLC contact // 737-7766 web // www.townandcountrybuildersllc.com
Tip No. 1: Select cabinets Choose kitchen cabinets with care. So many varieties to select from can make your head spin, so hone in on one style that suits your tastes. Contemporary design to Asian bamboo styles and white cabinets are ever so fashionable. Solid plywood boxes and hardwood frames also are a great choice. There are cabinets fabricated with engineered wood with laminate overlays for a modern, sleek look. Tip No. 2: Choose countertops Countertops can be ever so difficult to decide upon. Corian, which is manufactured by Dupont and is well known in the industry, stands out as a favorite. One of its advantages is that sink bowls may be integrated into the countertop so it becomes seamless with low maintenance, and it’s germ-free. Silestone Natural Quartz is a compound made of crystallized silicon dioxide and is extremely hard and resilient. This is the one and only countertop made of quartz with bacteriostatic protection, giving it hygienic properties. It comes in a variety of colors as well. Granite is a common type of rock used for countertops that consists mainly of quartz, mica and feldspar. It polishes to a beautiful finish and installs quickly without delays.
Tip No. 5: Have a clear vision Provide a clipped photo of a kitchen design style that you like for the contractor so he or she can reference it when designing your new kitchen. Enjoy your renovated kitchen with good food, good times and family. Reach Town & Country Builders LLC at 737-7766 for a free in-home consultation or visit www.tow nandcountrybuildersllc.com. The company has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and is a certified remodeler.
Tip No. 3: Get your appliances Choose appliances such as combination microwave and wall oven units. Build them into a tall cabinet at eye level for ease of operation and a comfortable height. Tip No. 4: Choose flooring Color coordinate floor coverings with cabinets, glass tiles and countertops. Make certain that items are in stock and available for the contractor to install before work begins.

If you attended Geobunga’s April 13 composting workshop and are planning to attend this Saturday’s workshop, we’re convinced we’ll help convert even the blackest thumbs to green. This Saturday’s workshop will focus on the fundamentals of organic gardening including:
G
• Practical skills and solutions to common garden problems using organic techniques • Helpful dos and don’ts of organic gardening, as well as its benefits Turn food waste into black gold Organic gardening begins with compost-
ing, which eliminates the need for synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. When done right, organic gardening can be cheaper than store-bought groceries, less damaging to the environment and give you a better understanding of food production. Every day we throw away the ingredients needed to produce quality garden compost. Compost will increase both plant nutrient uptake and soil water retention (meaning less watering). Flowers bloom more profusely, trees produce more fruit and gardens yield better, quality vegetables and herbs when treated with compost. Fresh food “Hawaii residents can grow fresh produce year-round, thanks to the islands’ mild climate and sunny weather. I love the convenience of having herbs and produce just steps away from my kitchen, said Andrew Dedrick, executive director of Geobunga.

CV CONSTRUCTION APRIL 21 • 2013 17
Getting the job done BY VICTOR YEUNG here are so many things to consider and do before, during and after a renovation. Having a contractor control the flow of the project will help make sure the project goes according to plan and finishes within the time promised. CV Construction LLC is just that type of company. A recent project involved a homeowner and serviceman who, just before he was deployed, inquired about our services. When I went to complete the free estimate, he had already been deployed, so his wife walked me through their renovation request. I then drafted an estimate on site and sat down with the homeowner’s wife and explained the estimate from beginning to end. After a few email exchanges between the deployed husband and I, the couple settled on what they wanted to complete in their renovation. I had the wife come to our showroom to look at some samples and finalize the contract. Then we went shopping for their appliances.

CV CONSTRUCTION
Contractors always know where to get the right-priced materials for your project and help you with buying the right appliances to fit your budget. While shopping, I gave her my ideas of items that would fit her budget. We settled on what she wanted and had the items delivered. As with all renovations, there were bumps along the way. I helped the couple by maintaining contact with both the husband and wife. After the project was completed, I found out that her father did a similar renovation (not in Hawaii) and was amazed at the speed and quality of the project. CV Construction LLC strives to exceed the expectations of the homeowner with each project. We maintain an open line of communication so there are no surprises, and we always strive to save time and money. We have a special going on right now for a brandnew house build ($115 per
square foot minimum for a 2,000square-foot build). This includes Hardie Board Siding/Bamboo Flooring and Standard Plumbing fixtures (restrictions apply). Call to inquire more about the special. Victor Yeung is a project manager at CV Construction.

NANO TEK-ON LLC
The trick to eliminate shower spots o matter where we live, we are subjected to April showers. And they sure mess up our cars as we get splattered and our windshield wipers streak the window, and the headlights are suddenly dimmer at night. Cleanup is easy, though. Just drive the car through the carwash! Wouldn’t it be great if we could drive our house or bathrooms through a “house wash or “shower door wash? “The truth is, we can, said Harald von Sydow, director of Nano Tek-On. “Well, it’s not exactly a carwash. However, at Nano Tek-On, through the use of nanotechnology, we clean the windows on your house and then coat them with an invisible sealant that makes these surfaces nonporous. The surfaces will then repel the rain and all the contaminants that streak and stain windows in Hawaii (see photo). And all you need to do is wipe down the surfaces to keep them clean. Water simply rolls off — no spotting. And, we can do the same with your shower doors. The white streaks, splatters and spots on your shower doors are caused by calcium deposits. Everyone in Hawaii has water that leaves calcium deposits. Every time you take a shower — and it doesn’t have to be in April — the calcium deposits will stick around on

the shower doors, sinks and tub fixtures. That is, unless you have the little powerhouse unit called HydroFlow. Once Nano Tek-On installs HydroFlow on the plumbing in your home (installation is free), the calcium and limescale buildup inside the plumbing will start to break up. Soon, most of the spotting will stop. And,
if Nano Tek-On has cleaned and coated your shower doors first, the limescale and calcium deposits won’t stick. Nano Tek-On attaches the little HydroFlow unit to the outside of your plumbing (no cutting of pipes) and then it goes to work to rid the pipes of corrosion
and limescale. HydroFlow is silent, doesn’t change the taste of your water and is environmentally safe just like all the products. Nano Tek-On uses to clean and seal glass, granite and concrete surfaces, protecting them from being attacked again by contaminants. Shower doors with no spots are just a side benefit of having a HydroFlow unit working in your home. What the HydroFlow unit really does is breakdown limescale from the inside of your plumbing so that it washes away down the drain. The resulting benefits are that your water-using appliances will last longer without the corrosion caused by limescale and calcium deposits. The water coming out of the faucets in your sinks, tubs and showers will flow easily and you will save money on your water and electric bill. Your hot water heater will also work more efficiently and have a longer lifespan. For more on how you can dance in the rain knowing that streaks, spots and stains won’t stick to your windows and shower doors, call 395-2996 or visit nanotekhi.com. Nano Tek-On specializes in environmentally friendly surface treatments including sealants for glass and natural stone, antimicrobial coatings and self-cleaning surfaces. It is the exclusive home of HydroFlow in Hawaii.

What about the ease of cleaning different types of window coverings? Cleaning these shutters is easy because they are soil- and dust-resistant. Although these shutters are extremely durable, you still have to care for them properly to make them last longer. You’ll want to avoid cleaning with bleach or scrubbing with a rough sponge. One of the best ways to clean these kinds of shutters is to wash them with warm soapy water. Use a soft cloth or soft sponge along with a mild detergent that is suitable for cleaning vinyl. Since the shutter panels are easily removable, you can decide whether you want to remove them from the window and wash them in the sink or on the ground, or leave them on the window and wash them using a hose or sponge. It is best to take them
down, especially if they are installed in your home’s interior. You do not want your furnishings or carpeting to get soaked in water while you are cleaning your shutters. Just make sure that you know how to properly remove and reinstall them. To dry your shutters, it is best to allow them to air dry rather than to dry them under the sun because sun drying can cause fading. If you want to dry them faster, you can use a clean dry cloth that will not leave lint to wipe them down. Palm Beach™ polysatin shutters can also help you reduce your electric bills. This is because they are great insulators. They can effectively keep the warmth or coolness inside your home, which lessens your energy consumption when your heater or air conditioning is turned on. In a nut shell, Palm Beach™ polysatin shutters provide an attractive look, are low maintenance and they’re an elegant choice for timeless beauty that will last a lifetime.

ALUMINUM SHAKE ROOFING
Protecting your roof so you can forget about it C ountry Manor Aluminum Shakes (CMS) may be Hawaii’s most forgettable roof — in a good way! Forget about high winds and blowing rain. The CMS roof was originally engineered and developed by Alcoa in 1974 with a unique four-way interlock and fastening system that actually holds tighter as wind speeds increase. The system efficiently sheds wind-blown rain right off the roof. CMS is now made in Ohio by Classic Metal Roof Systems.
Forget about fire Your aluminum CMS roof is fire-safe. It won’t burn or support combustion, so it will offer the protection your home needs against air-born embers. It is light-weight so it won’t burden or collapse your home’s structure in the event of an interior fire. Forget about termites Swarming termites that land on wood roofs can eat their way into its structural members. They can’t eat aluminum shakes though, and FoamGuard inserts, made from Performgard, kill termite and ant colonies.
ALUMINUM SHAKE ROOFING contact // 847-8885 web // fredrehm@hawaiiantel.net Forget about high utility bills In Hawaii, where temperatures rarely get above the mid to high 80s, you want a roof that will keep your home cool. Well, CMS is finished with a Kynar 500 infrared reflecting coating that keeps the surface temperature of the roof about 50 degrees cooler than conventional roofs. Plus, the free-floating FoamGuard, which is about 40 percent denser than anyone else’s inserts, has a built-in thermal break to keep your attic and room temperatures cool enough to eliminate the need for air conditioning.
Forget about shoddy workmanship Aluminum Shake Roofing (ASR) specializes in the installation of CMS and our workers are not paid piecework. The company doesn’t cut corners so it can get a larger paycheck. It only uses the highest-quality materials, such as polypropylene Sharkskin Ultra underlayment, all stainless steel fasteners and high density FoamGuard. No one installs an aluminum roof better than ASR.
One thing you will never forget about is the unsurpassed beauty and durability the CMS gives your home. To learn more about the CMS roof system and the manufacturer’s lifetime warranty, call Fred Rehm of Aluminum Shake Roofing at 847-8885. You can also inquire about a free detailed estimate. Aluminum Shake Roofing has installed thousands of CMS roofs throughout Hawaii since 1989.

BY KYLE GALDEIRA immy Suh and his courteous, professional staff make it a point to stress quality and integrity when it comes to assisting customers with a wide range of painting projects. “My main goal is to produce a quality job — that’s the most important thing,” said Suh, owner of Deep Purple Painting, who brings 25-plus years of professional painting expertise to each project. In early 2010, Suh moved to Hawaii to be closer to family and friends and brought his successful painting business with him to the Islands. The contractor spent nearly 20 years in San Francisco building his business and cultivating a sterling reputation for producing quality results. Whether the job involves painting a home’s exterior, or a few walls of a commercial space, Deep Purple Painting has it covered. >> After Prior to each job, Suh meets with the owner to determine the necessary steps involved in refinishing the desired surfaces. The painter and his experienced crew consider many factors, including the relationships between colors and how they complement one another, and present the owner with the viable options. Suh also considers include the texture of certain surfaces, and what variety of paint will coat them in a way that protects and beautifies for years to come. Suh has accumulated a host of positive referrals from satisfied customers — a direct result of his respect for his clients and their needs. When meeting with Suh, customers are encouraged to view the completed jobs in person to fully understand the stellar workmanship that goes into every Deep Purple project. After the look and feel of the project is determined, the client is presented with a written estimate detailing both the cost of the job as well as a timeline detailing the work. “The word-of-mouth referrals that I receive come from the extensive preparation and excellent results from numerous jobs, both residential and commercial,” said Suh of many notable projects in both Hawaii and San Francisco. “That’s why people like how I do business.” Suh has honed his craft for more than a quarter century and

can quickly diagnose problems with paint jobs that have resulted in unsightly chipping and peeling. Suh explained that the tedious tasks of priming and smoothing surfaces and filling in any cracks or imperfections with quality patching materials go a long way in ensuring a paint job’s effectiveness. “A painter needs to follow the proper procedures,” Suh said. “That’s why there are so many problems here in Hawaii with painting projects. You need to prime the area and prepare it properly. It’s worth the price for a premium paint job that’s done right the first time, saving time and money in the long run.”
BIG ROCK
One of the main reasons I started my monthly seminars was because of all the misunderstanding with engineered flooring. Folks would take a look at my beautiful Kahala Floors engineered product and literally say “Ick, I don’t want that cheap stuff”. As you can see, engineered wood flooring consists of a top wear layer of the actual species you are selecting and sublayers of plywood. Instead of a solid piece of flooring whose cellular structure makes all 3/4” of it want to twist and buckle in the same direction, the criss-cross ply layers below the useable wood keep every other layer in check. A kind of cross tension is established which helps the wood stay still without having to be tethered down. And 75% of the solid flooring is unusable anyhow. Some brands might be doing this to be stingy with the wood but not ours! We max out what we can include as the useable top layer without overwhelming the ply layers into behaving like solid once again. We offer you a lifetime product with as much usable wood as a solid! To learn more, call HAWAII’S BEST FLOORING COMPANY or attend our next seminar. Aloha, Shirley Pai Hilton President and Licensed Wood Installer (C-32692)

W.G. CONSTRUCTION LLC
Laying the groundwork for a great home project BY WENDELL GUIEB
uality work, satisfaction and good prices are the priorities at my company, W.G. Construction LLC. I started contracting concrete in 1990. Our company does any amount of work, from small to big projects. We work with everything from flat grounds to the hardest areas of your project, and we still provide a reasonable price. I will make sure before starting the work that both parties understand the scope of work when installing a concrete slab. Also, I’ll make sure to explain what the contract price is. When installing a concrete slab, I will install base materials, compact the base correctly, install wire mess or rebar for reinforcement and pour the right pounds per square inch (psi) of concrete. What is important about installing concrete is to follow the right procedure of finishing the concrete. I have worked with different general contractors as their sub-contractor doing concrete work for both commercial and residential projects. I have also built retaining walls for new homes and

perimeter walls. We build any area of your project, which can include compaction, rebar installation, CMU (concrete) blocks installation or fully grouting the area. We specialize in building new homes, renovations, additions, “jack up” homes or the smallest project in your home. We also build new or renovate commercial offices. As the owner, I fully supervise the project to make sure the job will go according to plan. My crew will always keep the job site clean and safe. I play the role of quality control when building to make sure we only use quality materials. My goal is to make sure we finish the job in the committed time given to the customer. Quality work and satisfaction at the end of the project is important. We work with our clients by meeting with them first to discuss what type of home and design they want. If they don’t have an architect, we have some architects that we work with to design their home the way they want until they are satisfied with the design. We can also process the permits for our clients. Most of our new clients are referred to us by our existing clients, which shows they are satisfied with our work.
