See Spots Run How to remove unwanted stains from granite
ince graduation, I’ve found myself with more downtime than I’ve had in years. But unlike my high school and undergraduate years, I’ve had no trouble filling my recent days off with productivity. Maybe I’m finally getting older, but now I find it difficult to lie around and do nothing. I’ve entertained out-of-town guests, worked out regularly, planned my sister’s bridal shower and kept the apartment the cleanest it’s ever been. I’ve found ways to make everyday acts pull double-duty as well: empty the dish rack while the coffee maker gets going, take the trash out while meat’s defrosting and even brainstorm ideas for this column while talking with others. While my family and friends live in different regions and in very different homes, each has at least one challenge to deal with. One such challenge that has come up repeatedly is the dilemma of dealing with granite stains. Granite is a porous material that is usually polished and sealed when installed, making it stain-resistant. However, being stain-resistant does not mean it’s stain-proof. For instance, when water is left to sit on a granite counter it can potentially dry into and stain the material. And although granite is praised for its durability, you must use extra care when treating it. Fortunately, you probably already have all the necessary ingredients for removing the stain. First, blot as much of the stain as possible to remove any lingering liquid. Then, mix baking soda and hydrogen peroxide together in a bowl. The consistency should be paste-like, and the amounts will depend on how large your stain is. Make enough to generously cover the entire stain. Spread the paste over the stain, and don’t be shy. The paste should be at least ¼-inch thick. Then, cover the paste with plastic wrap and tape the edges down with painter’s tape. Let it sit

for 24 hours. This will allow the baking soda to pull up and dry out the stain. Next, scrape up the paste and wash the surface with water and mild soap. You may need to apply the paste and repeat the process if the stain is not fully removed. To help prevent future stains, clean spills as soon as they occur, and use coasters for drinks whenever possible. Also, remember to get your granite sealed at least once every four to five years. You will know it’s ready when water no longer beads up on the surface. If you are ever uncertain about treating granite, consult a professional.

Replace your jalousies with louver windows A
s many Hawaii homeowners can attest to, it’s time to start thinking about window replacement when your old jalousie windows start to leak and fail. Do you use an awning window that will block 50 percent or more ventilation while creating safety hazards sticking out over walkways close to your house? Do you choose a sliding window that blocks your air flow by 50 percent and cannot be left open in the rain? You are now challenged with a tough choice because changing your jalousies means you will lose the benefits you have grown accustomed to, like full ventilation, safer walk ways, the ability to leave them open in gentle rains and the ability to clean them from inside the home. Well, there is great news for you! High performance Breezway louvers have all the full ventilation benefits of a jalousie in the
open position, taking advantage of passive cooling designs, while having none of the drawbacks of a jalousie window when they’re closed. Breezway louvers seal tight, keeping out wind, water and noise, and also offer security screen and hurricane-protection options. Recently Breezway also added the Stronghold clip system that secures the glass blade internally so it cannot fall out. This is ideal for high-elevation windows and increased security at ground levels. There is a term used these days by architects and designers when designing a home suitable for Hawaii’s climate: passive cooling. Ironically, it’s not a new idea at all. In fact, Hawaii has been practicing it for generations using jalousie windows, which offer full, whole-house ventilation. The importance of passive cooling is to maintain a cool home without resorting to air conditioning unnecessarily.
Breezway features a newer design approach called “mixed-mode.” Many architects and design firms locally are moving away from fully air conditioning buildings and instead incorporating mixedmode systems into their design. “By using our louver windows, the architects are able to achieve all the benefits of using trade winds to passively cool the building,” said Breezway’s Hawaii territory manager Shawn Moseley. This is the first
requirement of a mixed-mode system. “Then, when the AC (air conditioning) must be turned on during those very hot days, the louvers seal tight, keeping the cold air in.” This mixed-mode approach Breezway utilizes on average saves a building more than 43 percent on energy costs when properly designed, and as Moseley pointed out, “increases the indoor air quality, creating a healthier living and working environment.” JUNE 9, 2013 • 3

6 JUNE 9 • 2013 ESSENTIAL CABINET REFACING INC.
The affordable way to an updated, stylish design K itchen remodeling can be a daunting task, but cabinet refacing makes it easier on many levels. Refacing actually can save you money because it keeps the existing cabinet boxes in place. With refacing, only the exterior of the cabinets — doors, drawers and hardware — are replaced. This means you can change the entire look of the cabinets by choosing a new color and style.
Refacing also is an easy way to update your kitchen at about half of the cost of buying brand new cabinets. By not ripping the cabinets out of the kitchen, you save on labor and materials. Many kitchens have that one problem area: the pantry that seems to have 10-year-old expired cans in the back, the corner cabinet that you haven’t explored in years or the wast-

ed corner cabinet that you know has storage space somewhere back there, but you just can’t get to it. Essential Cabinet Refacing Inc. can help you find solutions to these problems by doing simple carpentry modifications or adding some cabinet inserts or special hardware. Best yet, the job need not cost you thousands of extra dollars to do it. If a new kitchen is what you desire, contact Essential Cabinet Refacing Inc. immediately. The company builds new custom cabinets in its shop. Everything is made to order by a team of skilled staff members. The company has been in business since 1989 and prides itself on high-quality work offered at reasonable, competitive prices. Roofers with everything under the sun t seems like no matter where you go, people are talking about “PV” or “solar energy,” and for good reason. More and more Hawaii homes and businesses are looking into solar installations to help fight rising energy costs. The number of homes and businesses installing solar panels has been on an enormous upswing over the past few years for both residential and commercial properties statewide, and even worldwide. Why not? In today’s solar energy boom, homeowners are experiencing great deals alongside state and federal tax credits. These are definitely things to be excited about. Before installing a solar panel array, it is important to assess the condition of the existing roof the panels are going to be mounted to. By ensuring the integrity of the existing roofing system, you will avoid future problems such as leakage, repair or the need to remove panels to re-roof. Certain types of roofs, such as tile and wood shingle or shake roofs, can present challenges like cracked tiles or loose shingles to the solar contractor. By having your roof inspected and getting the necessary repairs done prior to solar installation, you can ensure that your roof is in proper condition for solar and less likely

to cause problems. Your existing roof ’s warranty is another important factor to consider. Knowing the warranty of an existing roof is vital when deciding to go solar. If the warranty will expire soon or a homeowner has experi-
enced persistent leakage, it is a good idea to install a new roof before making the investment in solar. Removing solar equipment to make repairs to a damaged roof can be quite costly. Therefore, it is important to know your warranty: what it covers

and when it expires. With this information, you will be able to make the right decision concerning your home and roof. After the new roof, energy efficient coating or roof repair is in place, you are ready for solar. Surface Shield Roofing offers all-inone solar roofing combo packages. Having a licensed roofer install the panels on your new roof is a sure way to prevent leaks caused by improper solar penetrations. The company is a one-stop shop for all your roofing and solar needs. GOLDEN CABINETS & STONE
Putting an artistic spin on home design BY KYLE GALDEIRA olden Cabinets & Stone offers its customers multiple elements of customization, which in turn allows clients’ creativity to run wild. Those building from scratch or remodeling an existing space have the choice of including 30- and 40-inch wall cabinets as well as featuring glass panels as an added artistic element. Special orders are welcomed, and if customers provide the measurements for their desired cabinetry, Golden Cabinets & Stone can create a 3D computer rendering of what their project will look like upon completion. As pending home improvement projects command the attention of property owners, customers will be pleased to learn that Golden Cabinets & Stone recently added 10 new granite and three quartz countertop varieties to its extensive inventory. Owner Wayne Cao explained that the fresh, new countertop styles are available for those looking to build a kitchen or bathroom, or simply spruce up an existing space. Reservations for the new counter-

tops are being accepted now to aid in the planning and design process. The company is also offering a huge sale during which customers can take advantage of savings ranging from 40 to 50 percent off the entire stock of cabinetry and countertops. Cao encouraged customers to stop in and check out Golden Cabinets & Stone’s new selection of porcelain tiles. Multiple varieties of the tile are available, and the covering resembles travertine — a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs. “The porcelain tile really provides the look of natural stone, modeling travertine, Cao explained. Golden Cabinets & Stone has gained a reputation for offering quality, affordable cabinetry and countertops to meet the needs of Hawaii’s consumers for more than five years. Cao noticed how expensive it had become to purchase the products in Hawaii and sought to bring more affordable options to local residents. Cao notes that Golden Cabinets & Stone is fully stocked with inventory, and “a wide range of choices are available for

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I get distracted a lot, even though I have so many things I need to do for my family and at work. At the end of the day, I run out of time, and am not as productive as I want to be. What can I do in my home and in my life to support my productivity?
• Color. In your home, use colors that
strongly believe that if you love the life you are living and are living the life you love, distractions are not a big issue and productivity is a by-product. However, even as “responsible” adults, we are often uninspired by things we “have to” do. Let’s take a different perspective for a fresh approach.

If you don’t schedule it, it’s not “real” When you fail to schedule a task, it does not feel real to you. Deciding that you will do a task when you have “some extra time” is like deciding to quit before you get started. To make yourself accountable and prompt yourself to take action, note your “to do” items on a calendar so that you have a concrete timeframe in which to act and a solid reminder when frivolous distractions entice you.
Have a productive day I use the following methods and achieve great results:
• Early morning is an opportunity to plan ahead. Either before getting out of bed or just before you turn on your computer, ask yourself what the one thing is that you can do to make your day highly successful. What is it that you can realistically accomplish that will further your focus and leave you feeling that you were productive and successful at the end of the day?
• Define your boundaries. With the advent of Smartphones, computers and wireless Internet, life lacks the natural boundaries of the old days when home and work were
geographically separate. We believe we accomplish more, given the time saving electronic age, but we also spend a great deal of time “playing” on our gadgets, being far less focused, at the cost of the quality of work we produce. Clearly define when it is “work” time and when it is “play” time, diminishing the opportunity for one to interfere with the other. • Set your intent and hold that boundary. Not having a plan for the day is akin to being caught in a whirlwind. You risk spending more time running off course and trying to get back on course and getting distracted by all the stimuli around you. Ask yourself what you care most about accomplishing that day and in the near future. That simple question is an excellent and gentle way to keep you on track.
• Stay connected with yourself throughout the day. Set an every-two-hour alarm on your watch or phone. At the sound of the alarm, pause and ask yourself if you are doing what you need to be doing at that time. This is not a lifelong solution, but try it until you develop a habit of checking in with yourself without an alarm. • Stand firm. Only you know what you care most about accomplishing; so communicate that when others try to lure you off course. Say “no” politely but firmly. Instead of thinking, “Why not,” think “Why?” Having a plan for the day that instills confidence, simplifies your life and eliminates distractions makes it easier to graciously say no. In addition to the above tips and tools, use any of the following feng shui energy-
inspire you. Energy boosting colors are bright colors that pop, such as reds, pinks, oranges and purples. • Mirrors. Mirrors of all shapes and sizes generate energy, which is why you should avoid large mirrors in the bedroom, where calmness is preferred. Use mirrors in dead areas to instantly add energy. • Lighting. Candles and lights naturally raise the energy level, so make sure your home is well-lit, even the hallways. Use spot lighting to illuminate your artwork or light up a dark corner. • Artwork. Make sure your artwork anchors no unwanted emotions and instead represents only what you feel is positive or want to keep or bring into your life. • Sound makers. Pleasant sound wakes up the energy. Chimes can be used inside and/or outside the house at the front door to greet and welcome the energy or in a window to energize a specific room. • Living things. Live things, such as pets, plants, flowers, and animals, that are well maintained and cared for bring lively energy into the home. • Water features. Well-maintained and clean water features, such as fountains or aquariums, are excellent energy enhancers. • Mobiles. Mobiles or flags moved by circulating air can serve to bring energy into the environment in a subtle yet powerful way.
Make your life interesting! Make your life as entertaining as a wellwritten adventure novel and you will be the queen of productivity. How often have you picked up a book that was a pageturner? Your life can be just as engaging.

How to dress your home to impress buyers this summer Y our home is a place to kick off your shoes, relax and enjoy precious time with friends and family. Nothing quite tops the feeling you get when you walk through your foyer, close the door behind you and forget the day’s troubles. But as families expand, promotions require unexpected relocations or a coveted residence down the street goes up for sale, you might find yourself looking for a new oasis to call home. Your tastes and personal style have created a beautiful setting for your home until now. But as you prepare for house hunters visiting the space, it might be time to let go of emotional attachment and transform your home into a stunning showpiece that any potential buyer would love.
A touch of color If your walls need painting, applying a neutral color is usually recommended. But don’t be afraid to have some fun with a color that will leave a lasting impression on people searching for the perfect, stand-out home. A bold color like Azalea married with the soft subtle hue of Chiffon and Swiss Coffee, all from Pratt & Lambert Paints, can create an energetic
atmosphere while still giving your home a comfortable and relaxing vibe. Apply the bolder colors to an accent wall or on minor architectural elements throughout the home, to breathe fresh life into otherwise dull walls. Painting is a small project that can create the most impact when selling your home. But if your home is large and the thought of taking on a painting project seems overwhelming, never fear. Skilled painting contractors in your area can offer the talent and know-how to get any painting project done quickly, without sacrificing on quality.
Take your space from aged to staged Another way to inspire potential buyers is by showing off a beautifully decorated and elegantly styled home. To get an expertly polished palace, hire an accredited staging professional who will assess the space and plan a design that will have homebuyers stopping in their tracks. In fact, homes that

are professionally staged spend 83 percent less time on the market, according to a survey conducted by The International Association of Home Staging Professionals and StagedHomes.com. The first thing the stager will do is de-clutter your home. Prospective buyers don’t want to be reminded of the home’s current owners, so removing personal photographs, over-the-top decorative items or over-sized furniture is an essential part of the process. They might also reconfigure furniture to improve the home’s flow and function. Lighting is an important factor when showing a home as well. Stagers will find a way to warm up the space and highlight focal points of the room using strategic light sources, creating an unforgettable space. And since more than 90 percent of potential buyers are searching online prior to visiting a home in person, professionally staged spaces are better able to communicate through photographs than generic shots. If you’ve already moved out of your house and into your new home, the stager will bring in key furniture and accessories to help house hunters envision themselves living there. Just like a too-cluttered home might turn off some buyers, a blank ho-hum
Curb appeal can make your abode irresistible

prucing up your property’s curb appeal brings new energy and life, not only to your property, but also to the entire neighborhood. It creates a welcoming and appealing environment, while also making it a better candidate for resale. Here are two curb appeal projects you can take on this summer to highlight the wonderful qualities of your home:
look can give off a lackluster vibe, so staging an empty house can help any buyer see its true potential. By investing some time and money into the right kind of home improvement and staging projects, you can be confident knowing you’re a step ahead of the competition.
• Green and growing beauty. By incorporating beautiful flowerbeds in strategic areas — like around the mailbox, next to the driveway, along the sidewalk to the front door and around the front of the home — you have a great way to add beautiful curb appeal. Continue to rotate new flowers into the flowerbeds as the seasons change, allowing you to vary the accent colors in your yard frequently.
• A fresh new color. Everyone loves the look of a new coat of paint and whether used on your front door, shutters, trim or siding, it can really impact the look and feel of your home’s exterior. The Home Depot carries 64 unique new Behr colors that can be tinted to any color in Behr’s existing palette of 2,000 hues or custom color-matched.

CATHY LEE
ince we live in Hawaii, decorating our homes in island style is not only easy, it’s sometimes expected. But that doesn’t have to mean a lot of palm tree prints. Whether I’m designing for myself or a client, my preference is to lean toward “modern island,” and the easiest way I know to incorporate that flair is to look for a modern weave. Why? Woven images are reminiscent of lauhala mats, baskets and other tropical implements. This texture has been used in island-style furniture for years. The reason it’s so timeless and works in modern interiors is because it’s geometric. It’s not overthe-top tropical, it’s more textural than a floral print, and since bigger weaves look more casual, you can choose smaller ones for a more refined look. Here are some examples I’ve pulled from my showroom, Cathy’s Marketplace. They’re meant to help you think a bit outside the box. Let’s start with this coffee table. The tray that sits on top is in a brushed aluminum, so it screams modern. But the beautiful tight weave points in an island direction. All you need is a glass vase and some greenery to accentuate it, and placed on your existing island-style rug or next to your island-style furniture, voila —
Catch the Weave Want something that says island flair for your home decor? Choosing spunky woven furniture will keep your tropical look nice and modern left Geometric patterns and organic materials give this wood weave rug a modern island feel. below A tightly woven aluminum coffee table portrays island style in a sleek way.

table or side table. You can also mix dark and light colors, or smaller and larger weaves. The woven textures will make the pieces look tied together, but not as if you bought them in one pack.
Tip 2. Don’t overlook window treatments. The more loosely woven your shades or curtains, the more tropical and casual they’ll look. A very thin weave can feel sleek and modern but still have an island base. you have an instant update. Next, this McGuire full-sized bed has a headboard and footboard in a woven material. So why doesn’t it look like Tommy Bahama? It’s the clean lines and geometric shapes, both characteristics of modern décor. This sassy blending helps give McGuire pieces timeless appeal. And finally, veering from weaves a little bit, you can go modern island with geo-

metric shapes and organic tropical materials. This area rug of interconnected ovals is made of natural wood that’s lightly stained and polished. It creates an instant island foundation for a space with a funky, fresh perspective. Are you getting the general idea? Now I’ve got some practical tips for you. Tip 1. You can mix your weaves. All-weather wicker is all the rage in outdoor finishes and has been for a while. But you know me, I hate matchy-matchy! If you’re going to get a seven-piece set, consider breaking it up with a different coffee
The other great thing about weaves? They can work in modern, Asian or any sort of eclectic decor. So go ahead and give it a try. Go to any discount store and look at the baskets. Notice the detailing in the weave. Pick out what you think looks more modern, and you’re already on your way.

Simple tricks to take PV m e t s care of clogged drains Sy in T Lesse Tim hese words strike fear and loathing into a homeowner’s heart: “The bathroom sink drain is clogged!” Nothing can ruin a pleasant day faster than the thought of shutting down a crucial room in your home until the plumber arrives. But it’s a fact of home-owning life: At some point, the drains in your home will become clogged. The question is, will you be caught by surprise, or be prepared and possibly avoid the problem altogether? A little preventive maintenance now can go a long way when it comes to drain-related problems. Plan ahead, and you’ll avoid the alltoo-common clogged drain frustrations: waiting for the plumber, a bathroom floor covered in water, etc. What’s the key to preventing a clogged drain? Choosing the best preventative products that allow you to live your life while minimizing those pesky drain issues for you. Here are few easy ways to avoid clogged drains. For the kitchen disposal, you can run hot or cold water through the drain. Cold water run liberally through the sink will loosen stuck items, while hot water will help get rid of food residue. Instead of pouring hot grease down the kitchen drain, pour it into another container and then throw it away. Don’t forget to clean the drain pieces regularly to keep them in good working order. If long hair or pet hair is a problem, consider strainers over every drain in the house. While many companies offer drain-clearing products, we recently came across one with a completely different approach to addressing the issue. PF Waterworks focuses on eliminating the problem with a line of clog-prevention products that reduce the
with
s Lese y n Mo build-up of clogs and the need for drain cleaning products, thereby reducing frustration and saving time and money for the homeowners. For more information, visit www.pfwaterworks.com. PF Waterworks will be introducing a new product in 2013: the FlushSAVER Dual Flush Converter reduces water usage by 30 percent or more, even in already low-flow toilets. A unique patented design converts single-flush toilets to dual-flush with easy installation, no tank removal and no tools required. The FlushSAVER could save up to 15,000 gallons of water per year for a family of four. You can free yourself from the frustration of clogged drain hassles, expensive plumber visits and schedule-shattering plumbing issues by choosing safe, effective products . KAHALA PACIFIC FLOORS
The benefits of hard flooring surfaces H omeowners are eliminating carpet in at least part of their homes in record numbers. Hard surfaces, such as wood flooring, have become extremely popular for their good looks as well as practicality, and many of them are made for a lifetime of use. Carpeting is probably the most budget-friendly floor covering, but many find that it is not a practical surface — especially in highly used areas such as dining rooms and family rooms — and works out to be more expensive in the long run. Many of us know the situation well: Something spills on our carpet or we find phantom spots that someone has left behind. Additionally, everyday soiling from our feet starts to grind into the carpet, and we can never quite get it out. Carpet cleaning is good, but never great, and even with diligent care, carpets begin to break down after a number of years. Dust from carpet fibers and the deteriorating pads below them (which can dry-rot and turn powdery with age) can contribute greatly to allergies and irritate asthma sufferers. With wood and stone on the other
hand, the surface can be cleaned thoroughly to avoid these irritants. Shirley Pai Hilton of Kahala Pacific Floors recommends Bona Kemi products to keep wood and other hard surfaces clean with minimal work. “Often, the main thing is to clean up sand and other small granules, which can scratch your flooring. That does the most damage over time. A roving vacuum is ideal for this as well as normal dust and pet hair. Then all you have to do is do some light wiping with the Bona microfiber mop,” said Hilton. Hilton has also heard customers say that their homes feel a lot cooler with a hard surface. One customer felt that the carpet seemed to retain heat, while wood flooring did not. But Hilton is not ruling out carpet altogether. “We have wood and stone throughout our home, but we wanted the coziness in our bedrooms and opted for a deepertoned, textured carpet so as to camouflage some of the inevitable soiling, especially when our daughter Sophia was just 4 years old at the time,” said Hilton. Suffice it to say that the consumer has

Get the most energy out of your solar panel production O ne of the most frequently asked questions by prospective solar electric system purchasers is: How many panels do I actually need? Oftentimes people will choose the lowest number of panels feeling confident that they will be enough. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t. Results from companies can vary. Amounts can differ depending on where you live, how much electricity you actually use on a daily basis, what type of inverters are being used and, of course, the photovoltaic (PV) panel’s production, which is measured by the number of watts that are delivered to your electrical system. EnergyPro has remained consistent in that all of its systems use Enphase microinverters. Enphase has established itself as the leader in microinverter technology and it offers outstanding support in the rare event that a problem occurs. The company’s 25-year warranty is top in the industry and its inverters produce power at a very efficient rate. Enphase also offers an advanced monitoring system that enables users to see how its systems are working at any given moment. It produces real-world results and even offers email alerts if an issue arises. Currently Enphase’s M215 microinverter is the strongest inverter and can be paired safely with up to a 260-watt panel.
Through the Enphase monitoring system dubbed “Enlighten,” viewers are able to track individual panel production. This tool is invaluable in helping EnergyPro Hawaii calculate the perfect amount of panels a prospective customer might need in a specific area to completely offset their electrical usage. By studying previously installed systems all over Oahu, EnergyPro Hawaii has found a very powerful combination utilizing Enphase’s M215 AUO/BenQ’s 260-watt, monocrystalline panel. In certain areas the company has seen an individual panel’s production reach 1.7 kW/H in a single day. Compared to other panel manufacturers that are installed — Samsung, Sanyo/Panasonic, SolarWorld, Solar Technologies, Trina, etc. — AUO/BenQ has proven to be one of the highest producing panels sold by the company. EnergyPro Hawaii can install almost any microinverter and brand of panel, but highly recommends AUO/BenQ. AUO/BenQ may be an unfamiliar name to some, but it is one of the largest TFT-LCD manufacturers in the world, and produces TFT panels for companies such as Samsung, NEC, LG, Dell, Apple, Viewsonic and Acer. The plant is located in Taichung’s Central Taiwan Science Park and has been named the largest green plant in the world, according to the United States Green Building Council.

Outdoor chores are a cinch with these tips S ummer brings everyone outdoors — grilling on the deck, playing on the lawn and savoring beautiful gardens. To create these beautiful outdoor spaces, the experts at Lowe’s offer four easy, affordable projects you can do yourself. Follow these tips to make sure your outdoor spaces are in tip-top shape by summer’s end.
and down when using a riding mower and across when using a walk-behind mower. Lowe’s offers a wide assortment of power equipment to help maintain your lawn with less effort. Keep your landscape green and healthy A healthy, actively growing lawn uses a great deal of energy. Natural soil supplemented with fertilizer will help your lawn stay healthy all season. Fertilizers promote new leaf and plant growth, reduce and control weeds, and replace nutrients lost to leaching. Look for a mixture of fast- and slow-release fertilizers that will green up your lawn quickly and then feed it over time. Remember, more is not always better. Nitrogen is the most important ingredient in a fertilizer, but if you put too much on your lawn, you’ll burn it.
Maintain a lovely lawn Most lawns will grow well with about 1 inch of water a week. Water in the early morning, so the sun will help dry the grass. Nighttime watering can result in prolonged moisture on the blades and can open the door to disease. How do you know if you’re watering enough? Try the “soup can test.” Set an empty can next to your lawn sprinkler. When there’s about a half-inch of water in the can, it’s time to turn off the sprinkler. When you’re mowing, never cut off more than one-third of the grass blade. Leaving the grass longer shades the roots and encourages a deeper root system. To better protect your lawn on hills, mow up
Create beautiful gardens Mix annuals and perennials for a “pop” of color to create season-long beauty. As you decide which flowers to purchase, pay attention to the labels that state how much
sun or shade they like. The wrong amount of sun exposure can hinder growth and beauty. Find the perfect spot for your plants by marking where the sun tracks across your yard, then put plants that need the most sunlight exactly where they need to be. Turn your deck into an outdoor room Extend warm-weather enjoyment by sprucing up your deck. Drizzle water on the boards to see if it’s time to reseal. If the water beads up, the wood is still protected, but if it’s quickly absorbed, it’s time to seal
it again. Your deck might just need a good cleaning with a pressure washer. When pressure washing, always work with the grain of the wood to avoid splinters and to keep the deck smooth. Attach a rotating surface cleaner to your pressure washer to clean your patio four times faster. Extend the look of the indoors into the outdoors by adding durable, aluminum outdoor furniture that can be customized to fit your style preference with mix-andmatch fabrics. Smart improvements that work for all ages M ost Americans over 50 want to stay in their home as they age, but few are making the renovations they need to ensure easy and comfortable living for years to come. In fact, 80 percent of people older than 50 say they would prefer to remain in their home indefinitely, according to an AARP survey. The Hartford and MIT Age Labs found that while 96 percent of baby boomers are aware of the changes they could make to their current home to make it more comfortable as they grow older, only 26 percent have made such modifications. Consider some of the following functional, yet beautiful, touches that help make a home safer and more comfortable for residents of all ages. Hardwood floors Replacing carpet with hardwood floors can help accommodate difficulties ranging from respiratory problems to decreased mobility. Unlike carpet, hardwood flooring doesn't trap dust, pollen or other particles that cause problems for those with allergies and respiratory issues. Wheelchairs and other mobility equipment can glide more easily over a hard surface, and hardwood floors require far less maintenance. New furniture Changing out furniture can make a huge difference in the comfort and style of a home. Enhance maneuverability by
allowing ample room between furnishings, and by picking accessible pieces such as counter-height dining tables and chairs. Likewise, it's easier to sit in and stand from firmer sofas and chairs than deeper, softer options. Kitchen improvements Kitchen shelves that pull out make utensils, pots and pans, and ingredients much more accessible, and do not require a kitchen remodel. A wide range of products and kits enable homeowners to easily install sliding shelves themselves, or they can hire a contractor to do the job. Also, consider swapping out knobs for handles on cabinets and drawers to make them more accessible and easier to use. More lighting Make sure all areas of your property — inside and outside — are well lit. Pendant lamps, inset ceiling lights and track lighting help illuminate a room from above, preventing glare that can cause temporary blindness. Opt for switches to turn lights on and off, and locate them at the entrances of each room. If a home’s wiring isn’t set up this way, the homeowner may need to contact an electrician.

Interior Design & Custom Cabinets offers an array of services uniquely tailored to provide every home with a personalized finish. In addition to custom-built cabinets, the company also provides fabrication and installation services for countertops, tile and flooring. As a business with local roots, Interior Design & Custom Cabinets recognizes the value of supporting Hawaii-manufactured materials. “Everything we use is built on this beautiful island,” said Duncan Graham, manager of Interior Design & Custom Cabinets. “It allows for quality control and helps keep prices reasonable.” To initiate a project, the process is simple. Customers are invited to call and arrange an estimate in which a team of qualified engineers will take measurements. Designers will then work with the homeowner to create a blueprint and select materials, styles and finishes.

Kitchen remodeling 101: Brush up on the basics I n this economy, taking on a kitchen remodel can be a scary proposition. You’re probably asking yourself plenty of questions. How drastically should you change the room? Do you need to hire a professional? Can you still recoup money spent on remodeling if you sell the house? Have no fear — these six tips from Summer Baltzer, interior designer and former host of HGTV’s Design on a Dime will get you remodeling like a pro without losing your mind or breaking the bank.
Breathe in. Breathe out. Break it down Before starting, take a deep breath and know that your project is going to turn out great. The key is to break your remodel down into manageable steps that you can wrap your head around: cabinets, counters, floors, paint and accessories. Although it can seem like a daunting process, there is no need to freak out. Identify the function of the room Take a second to think about how you use your kitchen. The best outcome is a kitchen that’s both beautiful and functional, so make sure you’re not getting caught up in just color swatches, paint samples and tile styles. Ask yourself a few simple questions: Who primarily uses the kitchen? How much foot traffic will there be? What are the main tasks occurring in the space? Pausing to think about how the space will be used helps you create a kitchen that works for your life. Make the space work for you If you are considering a new layout, first think about how you move around the kitchen. There’s nothing more frustrating than furiously trying to get dinner on the table for a group of friends when you can’t find anything or move around your kitchen with ease. Determine the types of stations you always use and what you need in each station. Add drawers or containers for utensils or herbs, anything you might need to quickly grab while standing in that place. If you can’t recreate your floor plan, sometimes it’s simply a matter of reorganizing. Don’t
assume you’re stuck with what you’ve got. Understand the scope of your work Is this kitchen makeover going to involve a partial or complete demolition, or are you going to be implementing simple fixes that you can pull off in a weekend? The work you’re looking to do will determine whether or not you need to hire a contractor and apply for permits or, if it’s just you, bribe your friends and buy that bucket of paint. It’s often smartest to look to a trained professional to handle the trickier parts of a kitchen makeover. Hire contractors who carry insurance to deal with your electrical and plumbing issues, use a professional installer to replace that new countertop and keep in mind that you may void the warranty on items if you install them incorrectly. Make a budget Though not as much fun as picking colors and fixtures,

you’ll be less stressed and can complete the project without a hitch. Finally, consider eco-friendly and durable materials that can be more affordable, including reclaimed wood, low-VOC paints, and countertops made from recycled fibers such as Wilsonart HD High Definition Laminate that can give the look of granite at a fraction of the cost. They’ll keep more of the green in your kitchen and in your wallet. Learn more at www.wilsonart.com. Keep track of paperwork It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of remodeling a kitchen, but the business end of a makeover is just as important. Keep track of contracts, warranties, manuals and receipts. Numbers used to identify paint colors and finishes are important too. Having everything accessible in a “kitchen makeover file” will make it easy to call for repairs or even simple touch-up if need be. Armed with the basics, you’ll be well-prepared to create a kitchen you love. This article Brandpoint.

DA WING TRADING LLC
Find the perfect combination of products for your kitchen, bath T
here’s a new kid on the cabinetand-granite supplier block, and its name is Da Wing Trading LLC. A family-owned-and–operated venture, Da Wing Trading opened its doors two years ago at 2006 Republican St., offering solid wood cabinets with plywood boxes (no MDF, particle board or pressed wood) and granite countertops out of its 8,000 square feet of warehouse and showroom space. “We own the property where we store in-stock cabinets and granite, thus we don’t have to pay rent, which enables us to pass the savings on to our customers,” said Harry Kwan, manager. “We sell (our products) at affordable prices, which are the people’s prices,” added Kwan’s uncle Tommy Chan, who works in the sales department. Kwan goes on to note that the family decided to invest in the 10,000-square-foot property rather than renting it out because they saw it as a good long-term investment
for future generations. Additionally, the property has ample onsite parking, a scarcity in the industrial Kalihi area. “That’s something very important to have,” Chan stated. Though Da Wing Trading only deals in cabinets and countertops at the moment, Kwan explained that they carry those made of quality materials. For example, countertops are made from granite imported from China, while cabinets are made using alder and maple woods. “These are solid woods, the good woods,” said Chan of the cabinets, which come standard with soft-close hardware and are available in four different color variations, including light cherry, maple, white (maple) and dark cherry (alder only). “Cabinets and countertops go hand-inhand,” Kwan said. “We chose to focus on granite for countertops because it is a unique, sturdy, natural rock, and a high-quality addition that can enhance the look and
feel of a kitchen or bathroom.” And for home-improvers looking for a little advice on their next kitchen or bath renovation, Da Wing Trading’s staff of professionals — which, in addition to Kwan and Chan, includes Kwan’s father, Yue Fung
