A fruit that packs a powerful punch Own your ith summer officially in full swing, I can’t help but turn my eyes (and stomach) to summertime food and drinks: grilled meats and veggies, pies, cold beers and frosty lemonade. Lemons seem to find their way into a lot during the summer months. They flavor cold

beverages, add the perfect bit of acidity to seafood and freshen up summer sweets. But lemons shouldn’t be limited to edible fare. Their rich color, citric acid, fresh scent and antibacterial properties lend lemons to so much more. You can use them as cleansers, deodorizers and even polishers and stain removers. • Deodorize your garbage disposal. Cut the lemons into pieces small enough for your disposal to handle. Ours is new and quite sturdy, so halves or fourths work well for us. Run the water, stick them in and grind for about 30 seconds. Then, turn the disposal off and allow the water to continue to run for up to another 30 seconds to ensure any residual pieces go down. For an extra oomph of clean, add some ice cubes to the mix. • Make furniture polish. Combine 1 cup of olive oil with the juice from half a lemon. >>SEE PAGE 18

Two-in-one tools let parents tackle tasks while on the go A ny mom or dad will tell you there are never enough hours in the day to “do it all.” “I multitask from the moment the sun comes up,” said Brittany Bailey, busy mother, wife, DIY renovator and the blogger behind Pretty HandyGirl.com. “Shaving mere minutes off my day-to-day routine lets me cross more tasks off my to-do list and spend more time with my family.” Whether yours is a family of three or 13, try these multi-functional tools to keep up around the house:

Parents can end the debate with the Delta In2ition shower with H2Okinetic technology. This two-in-one shower system simultaneously offers the comfort of water streaming from a showerhead and a hand shower and uses an internal system to control the droplet size of the water to create the feeling of more water than a standard shower. The embedded hand shower offers the flexibility to accomplish other tasks such as bathing children, washing pets and cleaning the shower. When not in use, it easily slips back into place on the showerhead. Utilizing two-in-one tools around the house can help busy moms stay ahead of the curve and reserve time for what really matters: quality time with family. If she's lucky, maybe she can even carve out some of that precious time just for her. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint. “Serving Hawaii Since 1981”

Kitchen Any mom knows keeping the kitchen tidy is a formidable task, with snacks, baking ingredients and trinkets that don't make it into the junk drawer. Consider recycling heavy-duty glass jars for extra storage without adding clutter to your countertop. Empty glass jars look chic on display, but also are hard at work when filled with sugar, cookies or even knick-knacks like keys or change. Because you can see into the jars, you'll always know what's inside.

Today’s column will feature the winner of the Overall Grand Award in the Commercial Remodel division. The winner is Armstrong Builders, LLC for “Easter Seals at Kahului. This 8,000 square foot Easter Seals building was laden with hazardous materials, termite damage and code delinquent issues. The goal of this renovation was to stay true to the existing architecture of the old structure while creating an environment conducive for learning. Hazardous materials were “surgically removed while beams, roof trusses, concrete slabs and retaining walls with painted murals were sal-

vaged and incorporated into the design. New roofing, plumbing, electrical, acoustical ceiling, air conditioning and ventilation brought the building to current energy-rated standards. Natural light flows into the space with the addition of windows, solar tubes and skylights in each room. The removal of dividing walls created openness and harmony between the new commercial kitchen and the new expanded learning center. A new common area created a covered open space to allow larger gatherings and events. This remodeling project represents the Easter Seals’ philosophy to work with existing conditions and improve upon them.

AKAMAI ENERGY JUNE 23 • 2013 7

Finding the perfect solar system for your home W ith literally hundreds of solar companies to choose from, it’s very difficult to find a solar company you can trust, let alone get a fair deal from. Look no fur ther than Akamai Energy to make it easy and affordable to go green with photovoltaic solar energy. The company has earned accreditation from the Better Business Bureau of Hawaii, so you know that it’s a company you can trust for all your photovoltaic solar needs. “We make it very easy for our customers,” said Richie Aqui, Akamai Energy’s managing director. “Give us a call and we’ll be happy to answer your questions. There’s never an obligation to purchase. The estimate is free and we’ll offer you a great price on your first phone call or visit with us. We have a highly experienced electrical and racking team to give our customers the peace of mind that we will install your system as we would on our own home.” Plus all Akamai Energy systems come with a 10 year installation guarantee and free semi-annual cleaning and maintenance check up for the first two years. Akamai Energy carries all major brands of solar panels

and will customize a system perfect for your home. Along with Akamai Energy’s attractive residential and commercial PV solar systems, the company is proud to offer an exclusive nanotol cleaning solution that will ensure your panels are clean and efficient for years to come. Many solar operators believe that naturally cleaning solar modules through rain and wind is sufficient, and therefore no additional manual cleaning is required. This is an outdated perspective, however. Not cleaning your solar panels will often result in irreversible damage to the modules, a reduction in efficiency and a shortened lifespan of the equipment. Keep your panels at their highest efficiency with a nanotol sealant and protectant from Akamai Energy. Akamai Energy is proud to introduce the Kill-A-Watt box power-saving device, which allows you to save up to 25 percent or more on your electric bill with no solar panels! It’s perfect for homes with limited roof space,

limited budgets, commercial buildings, condos, rentals and business owners. And for the summer, with every complete Akamai Energy PV system purchase (20 panels or more), receive a free vacation package to Las Vagas for two, or cool yourself down with a brand new split AC. The company also will coat the PV system purchases with its special nanotol solution.

Turning on electrifying services for your home BY JACKIE M. YOUNG f you want the very best in electrical and solar contracting, look no further than Ron D Electrical Service LLC in Waipahu. “I really take pride in providing honest, reputable service,” said owner Ron D. “I’m not one to shy away from challenges, and I always try to ensure that the customer is happy when I leave a job. That’s why a lot of my original customers from when we first opened still call me back for new projects.” Ron, 41, opened his own business in 2005 after working for another electrical firm for 13 years. “I’d gone through the electrician’s program at Honolulu Community College and attained journeyman’s rank at work (given only after five years and 10,000 hours of experience), but I’d always wanted to be an electrical contractor.” The Waipahu High School grad first opened his business out of his own home, working alone. “Those days I was working from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” he recalled. “We’re unionized, licensed and bonded,

It’s Time to Recharge You don’t have to wait until New Year’s to give yourself a reboot. Take a personal day to dedicate to moving, donating or buying new items that will renew you rug or mat that you step on immediately as you open the door.

with

Alice Inoue

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I need a fresh start. I feel that my life is old and stale. I just don’t know what to do. Do you have any suggestions?

• Plant. The new plant, placed so that it is immediately visible outside your entrance or just inside, can be any size, but should be full, luscious and abundant looking, representing new life entering into your home. If you do not do well with live plants, choose an authentic-looking silk plant.

es, I do! You can do a lot to get a fresh start. We don’t always have to wait until the beginning of the year to make changes and new resolutions. Mark a day on your calendar to take off from work, designating it a personal “renewal day.” Implementing feng shui by first setting an intention can be a great way to transition to a new start, and the payoff is worth the effort.

Y

Preparation for renewal day On your calendar, mark the day you choose for renewal. Set aside some money and put it inside an envelope with your name on it and “gift yourself ” with it on your chosen day, spending it on something that symbolizes your intention for renewal. Treat it as a sacred day Treat the day as a sacred one, taking it seriously and dedicating it to yourself. Plan ahead by turning off your phone and turning down all social and business appointments. Create an email auto-responder, indicating that you are unavailable and will respond “tomorrow,” as if you were going on vacation. Plan your errands for another day, and have others step in to care for the kids. General symbolic cleaning Begin by setting aside a given amount of time to clean your room or your home, and stick to it. Basically, make the space as tidy as you can, paying special attention to dusting shelves and objects. First, set your intention that this cleaning represents a fresh start for you on all levels of your being — body, mind, heart and spirit — and when finished, add light to your home by pulling up the shades or blinds.

• Mailbox numbers. If you have a mailbox with barely visible or worn out numbers on it, get some new numbers. Your mailbox, where opportunities arrive, represents the connection you have with the world outside your home. Of course, if you live in a condo, you can skip this step.

Move 27 things Next, a classic feng shui cure for getting unstuck is to move 27 things in your home. In feng shui, “27” is a powerful number. Without going too deeply into the details, “3" is considered a good luck number, and if multiplied by itself, the number becomes 9, the feng shui number of ultimate power, change and supreme good luck. If you times it by 3 again, it equals 27, the number of items to move to change and shift energy. The Chinese often think “more is better,” especially when it comes to luck and positive change. This is an easy and fun exercise. Walk around your home and move the 27 items, putting them into either their proper place, the trash, a donation bag or another position in the room or house. The items need not be huge, like a piece of furniture, although you can do that as well. Move whatever inspires you: significant and noticeable items such as a plant, a large figurine or an item that has been fixed in one spot for a long time. This is a great way to

While you are out, look for some art — images, figurines — something that inspires hope and joy within you, speaking to your intention for and signifying renewal. Even buying a new wallet can signify the beginning of a new focus on abundance in your life. Finally, if your home is lacking light, which brings in energy and fosters feelings of greater possibilities and opportunities, add a new lamp, candle grouping or lighting fixture.

Go shopping It’s time to buy a few things to grace the entrance of your home, where all energy enters. To bring in new energy, purchase the following: a new welcome mat, a plant, fresh flowers and new numbers for your mailbox.

Place your new items End the day by placing your newly purchased items in your home, knowing and trusting that in a very short time you have made some significant energetic changes that will continue to help you bring forth the intention you have set. On another note, if you, your husband, child or family wants to do this together, plan it as a couple or family renewal day. The main thing is to put your heart into it. Finally, congratulate yourself on taking action!

• Welcome mat. The welcome mat can be any thickness, color or design, but its width should be at least as wide as your door, signifying a new and inviting landing place for fresh energy. If an outdoor mat is not feasible, get a small indoor decorative

Extending your living space outdoors into your backyard T he backyard is more than just a lawn to mow or a place for the pooch to run around. Many homeowners are turning their backyards into an extension of their homes, bringing the indoors outside for additional living space. Upgrading or building a deck is the first way to incorporate an outdoor living space into the backyard. Some homeowners build an outdoor cooking space with their grill in mind, while others prefer a relaxing, living-room environment with comfortable seating and potted plants. “Your backyard should be your sanctuary,” said Janette Ewan, a Los Angeles-based interior decor stylist. “I’m all about multiple outdoor spaces. It’s really about looking at your outdoor space as an extension of your home.” Here are some tips to building your outdoor living space in your backyard:

A gathering space Patios and decks are perfect for sitting around and enjoying visits from friends, especially if the spaces are decorated for the occasion. A few key pieces of furniture and wellpositioned accessories are all that is needed. For example, a flat surface, like a patio, would look great with a Moroccan-style rug, combined with a small sectional. However, decks made out of natural material like Western Red Cedar are best left uncovered, to showcase the warm, distinctive look. Whether the cedar wood is left

without a huge commitment of time,” said home improvement expert Mark Clement, co-host of “My Fix It Up Life.” These structures support climbing plants and vines, and help to separate your outdoor space from the surrounding area. This also creates a sense of enclosure, while still being open and letting in plenty of sunlight and fresh air. Western Red Cedar is a good material choice for an arbor or pergola compared to composite materials, because it is easy to work with, rot-resistant, and has natural oils that emit a wonderful aroma.

Decked out for summer

S

ummer means time outside for many homeowners. Imagine a cookout with friends, snuggling with your sweetheart watching shooting stars, or having a backyard camp-out with the kids. A deck is an ideal spot for this. Are you dreaming of deck time, but dreading the construction and maintenance required? Whether you are a doit-yourselfer or plan to hire a contractor, remember these tips to help make your new deck a breeze.

Whether you’re extending your home onto your lanai or creating a new area on the lawn, the bottom line is to trust your eye and think about separating each space with a structure and grouping of elements. You’ll get years of enjoyment from your new favorite outdoor living space.

• Use free online design tools. The websites of home improvement stores like Lowe’s host their own deck designers, and an online search for “deck design tools” will turn up many other free options. • Talk to a local building department. You don’t want your project to face being shut down by the building inspec-

tor for not following building codes. This can mean a costly and time-consuming break down and rebuild of your project. Stick to code to ensure a safe deck. Decks often can be completed in a weekend or two of work, so start making plans now for a summer of enjoyment. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

A Magic Carpet Ride From an exotic Persian rug to a vintage Japanese ceiling lamp, global design elements are your ticket to a cultural journey right at home, and a modern look

n past columns I’ve talked about my new favorite decorating style: modern global chic. This week I’m taking a closer look because I’ve come across some cool things at Cathy’s Marketplace that illustrate how to bring this into your home. Obviously if you’re well-traveled, you can incorporate pieces you’ve brought home to create an eclectic space. Whether you have a lot of stamps in your passport or simply want to add a colorful, exotic flair, here are some tips.

I

Tip 1. Layer rich, exotic textures. As you can see, this hand-knotted Persian runner has beautiful, saturated reds and browns. Layering in a variety of textures and patterns from ikat to animal hides to sisal will frame it in a global context and enrich the whole look. Ideas for things you can layer in? Try rugs, pillows, upholstery and window treatments.

Tip 2. Mix furniture styles. This smaller-scale lotus armoire is Moroccan-inspired with hand-etched

more is more in global design, and you can certainly use more colors than with other decorating styles, your space will look more coherent if you have a color palette guiding your choices.

Tip 6. Find a focus. If you want a more designer-looking global space, you need to have focal points that are not competing with each other. Need inspiration? Google “global design” to search for rooms with styles that inspire you, and get ideas from the focal pieces you see.

sheets of blended metal on wood, which make it perfect for a global style. Start with a piece like this, then incorporate traditional, vintage or Asian pieces in the same setting for an edgy, contemporary effect. Tip 3. Bring in modern lines. Modern spaces are amazing backdrops for eclectic furniture and accents, but if you don’t have great lines in your architecture, add some in with modern art or furniture. This cantilevered vintage cane chair by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is from the 1920s, but it still exudes modern. Its great texture and amazing lines would juxtapose beautifully against more ornate global pieces. Tip 4. Infuse light. Global design is all about creating a warm, eclectic space. Natural lighting is great, but candlelight and accent lighting can also add to the atmosphere. Can you

picture this mid-century Japanese ceiling lamp hanging in a corner next to modern furniture pieces? The shadow pattern this will cast on the wall is just the ticket for a global space. Tip 5. Use restraint. It’s not about throwing a whole bunch of colors, textures and pieces together. Remember the basic guidelines I’ve talked about: Choose a color palette with a dominant color or two, and layer and repeat those colors. Though some people feel that

Although modern global chic is the very definition of eclectic, you don’t want your space to look like a hot mess. With just a few guiding tips, it can be a great way to leave your passport behind and go global at home!

High-tech ideas for making your home more luxurious I t is easier than ever to create a home environment that pampers you each and every day. To create your luxurious lifestyle, begin by incorporating fixtures that blend functionality, aesthetic appeal and innovative design into your whole home — expanding beyond general living areas into practical rooms like the kitchen and bath. Today, the humble faucet boasts highquality features that focus on sustainability, ease of use and, of course, high-end appearances. When exploring the myriad faucet options available, keeping the following aspects in mind can help you create a

lavish space that will leave you feeling pampered and guilt-free.

Design aesthetics Today, faucet designs range from traditional to ultra-modern, classical to futuristic, or even intricately embellished to minimalistic and sleek. This variety of styles allows you to use the fixture as a key design element in the space. For example, when creating an opulent bath space, details like Swarovski crystal accents on faucet finials can enhance the lavish feel of your bath instead of simply blending in.

Functionality Beyond aesthetics, innovative enhancements, such as touch activations, add convenience and a sense of ease to both the kitchen and bath space. For instance, the Brizo Charlotte electronic lavatory faucet brings more to the bath experience than just its flowing lines and classical elegance; it also increases ease of use through SmartTouchPlus Technology, which enables both hands-free and touch-sensitive operation. Additionally, TempIQ Temperature

Control Technology senses the temperature of the water before it leaves the spout. An LED light built into the top of the faucet changes color from blue to magenta to red, letting users know exactly when water has reached the desired temperature. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

S. TANAKA CONSTRUCTION JUNE 23 • 2013 17

A contractor that puts the ‘S’ in style B uilding a new home or renovating your existing one can be an intimidating process. Sometimes just coming up with ideas and concepts can be confusing and wearisome. S. Tanaka Construction is a design/build company that can help you with your home construction projects from start to finish without any upfront costs. The company will listen to your project ideas and help you turn them into a reality. It will also assist you with alternative ideas or brainstorm concepts if you are struggling with a vision. Started by Shinya Tanaka in 1984, the business is now owned by his son, Ryan Tanaka. Together, the two of them have established a reputable company with loyal clientele. Most jobs that filter in are referrals from previous customers, and many of them are repeat customers. Common testimonials from previous clients reveal the ease in working with Ryan and Shinya, and the quality of service received during the building process and final outcome. S. Tanaka Construction focuses primarily on building new homes and does so from the ground up.What does this mean to you

as a client? It means the company takes care of everything from attaining permits to creating plans to demolishing, building and finish work. For those of you who may have tried to complete your home projects on your own, you know that just starting the permitting process can be a tedious endeavor. If it’s a home renovation or addi-

tion you are interested in, S. Tanaka Construction specializes in those as well. Perhaps you want to upgrade your kitchen or bathroom to a more modern concept or extend your living room. S.Tanaka Construction will assist you through the whole process just as effectively as if it were a brand-new home. If you’re interested in receiving an estimate from S.Tanaka Construction, it’s good to know that estimates are free, all-inclusive and, as long as the job remains within the scope of work, firm. However, do not expect a quote from the company based on

the amount per square foot alone. S.Tanaka Construction does not come to a final price based on square footage, but rather on the specifics a client wants for the end result. For example, adding laminate flooring versus carpet or installing PV and central air will affect the final cost, so it is unrealistic to come up with a figure based only on square footage. This is how the company avoids price discrepancies and ensures that customers know exactly what they are getting. To contact S. Tanaka Construction, call 848-5010 or email info@stanakaconstruction.com.

MURAKAMI’S ROOFING JUNE 23 • 2013 21

Keeping ‘cool’ with roofing solutions t’s summertime and the living is easy. However, the summer heat may encourage some people to look for ways to cool off their home without cranking up the air conditioning. According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Guidelines for Selecting Cool Roofs, homeowners can reduce energy costs related to cooling by as much as 15 percent by using cool roof solutions. Using U.S. Mainland examples, a roof can be up to 100 degrees hotter than outside temperatures, and in turn, heat up the inside of the house. Don’t worry, Murakami’s Roofing has solar reflective solutions that will solve the “cool off more without costing a lot more quandary. Owner Clinton Murakami is a secondgeneration roofer who has seen a lot of roofs damaged by Hawaii’s intense sun. He highly recommends including solar cooling solutions in your reroofing plan. Murakami recommends cooling roof materials such as solar reflective shingles or roof coatings that absorb up to 50 percent of the sun’s heat so your roof and home stays cooler. Coatings also reduce UV and chemical damage and offer protection from water damage,

Kitchens and hallways are good candidates for a solar tube or skylight, and either will instantly provide light where it is installed.

HAWAII HOME EXPO JUNE 23 • 2013 23

Shedding light on lower energy bills M ost home renovations these days have three objectives: to make a space more open, to add more natural light and to update fixtures, finishes and equipment so that the space is efficient and looks good. What better way to meet all three criteria than to incorporate a skylight into your home design? A skylight lets in natural light, which lessens your dependence on lights to illuminate a space. This abundance of natural light will ultimately make the space feel more open and airy, and eliminates the claustrophobic confines many spaces in Hawaii struggle with. When it comes to choosing the right product, consider Ciralight, which is not your ordinary skylight. Its design and technology maximize the natural light intake and greatly deplete the need for normal overhead lighting. Ciralight uses a solar powered GPS system to track the sun throughout the entire day, adjusting its array of mirrors down a highly reflective lightwell and into the interior space via a prismatic diffusion lens, thus resulting in maximum light collection and effective dis-

tribution throughout the space. Compared to normal skylights, Ciralight delivers more natural sunlight for more hours throughout the day. Ciralight can illuminate building interiors with up to 63,000 lumens of sunlight for up to 10 hours a day, or more. Ciralight immediately saves

money through reductions in electric light usage during peak utility hours; cutbacks in air conditioning to counteract heat created by light fixtures; and decreased repairs to lighting fixtures, bulb replacements and maintenance labor hours. Another benefit of Ciralight is that the light utilized is natural. Natural sunlight is better for human eyes, includes the full UV spectrum, prevents illness and disease associated with “Mal-Illumination and is completely free. Compared to artificial lights, natural light increases sales and return visits

in retail. It also improves learning rates and test scores in schools, promotes higher productivity and morale in the workplace and can speed up recovery in health care. Do you have a skylight already? No worries, Ciralight can easily replace your existing 4 foot by 4 foot or 4 foot by 8 foot skylights. To learn more, call 695-3976 (EXPO) or come down to Hawaii Home Expo and talk to a friendly sales associate. Located at 2933 Koapaka St. in Honolulu, Hawaii Home Expo is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.4 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

RISOURCE ENERGY

Windward homeowners can ‘see the light’ R

ecognized for its lush beauty — as seen at Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens and Kahana Valley State Park — as well as its magnificent views from sights such as the Koolau mountain range at Nuuanu Pali Lookout or Oahu’s No. 1 beach, Lanikai, the Windward side of Oahu is a wonderful place to live. Though with fewer peak sun hours than the rest of the island and frequent overcast conditions, this pristine area along the east side of the Koolaus may seem less-than-ideal for installing a photovoltaic (PV) system. But with the introduction of Japan-made Solar Frontier CIS panels found exclusively at Risource Energy, Windward residents can now “see the light.” The technology and design within the Copper Indium Selenium panels allows for optimum output in low-light conditions by capturing and converting solar energy even during morning hours, afternoon hours and overcast conditions. PV is a huge investment and homeowners should make sure they are getting the most for their money in terms of dollar per watt. Distinct from other solar companies out there, Risource Energy offers homeowners a system that can still be efficient even in overcast conditions and keeps their electric bill low every month throughout the year. Customers will be pleased with a system and their savings from Risource Energy. Some Windward customers have seen their electric bills drop from $285 to practically nothing, saving nearly $3,400 a year. And with state and federal tax credits, they’ll be paying off 24 • JUNE 23, 2013

their systems in three and a half years. In an ideal PV system, one of its features should be that it can produce energy in the broadest range of environmental conditions. Darren Furumoto, director of operations at Risource Energy, knows that the climate in Hawaii can range anywhere from sunny to overcast, dry to wet, salty air to damp air. That’s why Furumoto wanted to offer Hawaii residents PV panels that can perform well in all types of conditions. Another common type of low-light

condition is caused by shadows, and Solar Frontier has managed to minimize this kind of power loss. Taking a look at the CIS panel, homeowners will notice it is comprised of 175 vertical lines versus other panels, which are comprised of a patchwork of squares. Because of this, when a shadow is cast on a portion of the CIS panel, it will not affect the output of the entire panel as it would on other patchwork-design panels. Furthermore, because the CIS panel is smaller in size, it

allows for more flexibility in its orientation, overall design and wiring of a homeowner’s system when taking into account any type of rooftop shading like chimneys, vents, second-story structures or even nearby trees. So don’t let less-than-ideal conditions dim your outlook on solar PV panels. Come find out what Risource Energy has to offer you, your home and your lifestyle. Call 843-8100 to schedule your free consultation.
