JOANNE ROMERO
You’re never too old to antique your furniture t’s amazing to me how much my taste has changed over the years. When it comes to food, my taste buds have adjusted and things I used to snicker at, such as olives and pickles, are now appealing. When it comes to the home, my taste has gone from, “It’s expensive so it must be nice,” to appreciating simplicity and items with a story to tell. I prefer historical homes and plantation cottages over McMansions and over-the-top abodes, and I choose function over style (although something with both always wins). I’ve learned to take my time in filling a home and not to settle for things I don’t love. I’ve learned that if something comes a certain way, it doesn’t mean it needs to remain that way. Classifiedad finds can be just as treasured as a brand-new item from an expensive retailer. If an antique item is too expensive, it takes just a little bit of time and patience to fake it and make one yourself. First, start by roughing up your piece of furniture with medium-grit sandpaper. Wipe it down to remove any dust
I
or debris left behind, and then apply an oil-based primer. When it’s dry, use a paintbrush to apply a base coat of paint in the color of your choice. Satin finishes work well. Allow the paint to dry overnight. Next, use medium- and fine-grit sandpaper to distress the piece. Think about what areas might get the most contact if the piece was around for years, such as corners, and start there. Try not to go too overboard with the sanding. Alternate between the mediumand fine-grit sandpaper to create different levels of distress. Wipe the piece down with a damp cloth again to remove any dust and debris. You can stop here, or you can add more character with an antiquing glaze. Brush it on with a natural-bristle brush. Before it’s dry, wipe it with a slightly damp cloth. Wipe as much or as little as you like. Let it dry completely, and then you’re done. It’s hard to go wrong with this technique because flaws add character. Just remember to start small, perhaps with a picture frame, before working your way up to larger pieces. You might even want to test this out on some pieces of wood before moving on to furniture. If you are ever unsure of whether you will “ruin” a piece, err on the side of caution. Have a comment or question for Joanne? Email her at thefixisinhawaii@gmail.com.

American Electric
A guiding light in the solar industry
s Ray Hose, president of American Electric, will tell you, “Never before have homeowners had to make so many decisions about their electrical systems. Solar, energy conservation, emergency power, 21st century loads on 1970s wiring — the homeowner really needs a trusted expert like American to help them deal with these concerns.” The kamaaina firm has been serving Hawaii since 1946. If you’re thinking about solar electric (PV), you should understand the changes taking
A
place in the PV industry, and specifically in Hawaii. The “gold rush” has peaked; PV panel manufacturers have gone bankrupt by the score, and prices are rising. Retailers/installers — including every fly-by-night and Mainland firm looking for a quick buck — are fighting for survival in a shrinking island market. The grid is reaching the limits of how much PV it can handle, and is already at critical saturation levels in most of Maui and significant portions of the Big Island and Kauai. On Oahu, homeowners in some areas are
being required to do an expensive engineering study to see if their planned PV system can be accommodated. With such dynamic forces battering the market, one sure strategy is to work with a trusted, professional firm. American Electric is one of the largest residential PV contractors in Hawaii and among the oldest and largest locally owned electrical contractors in Hawaii. The company’s sterling reputation has enabled American to partner with solar power

service companies, including the nation’s largest residential solar service provider, to offer homeowners a new way to go solar. Not only are these systems more affordable, but because these solar power service companies also monitor, maintain, insure and repair your PV system free of charge, switching to solar can be easy and hassle-free. As a one-stop-shop for all your electrical needs, American also provides comprehensive electrical system inspections to ensure your home can safely manage its electrical loads. This sophisticated electrical inspection and maintenance program is offered for both commercial and residential application, with clients ranging from multi-billion dollar institutions to single-family homes and condos. For nearly 70 years, American has built many of the giant power plants owned by the electric utility companies. With this expertise and depth of talent, industry professionals often call American to restore power after a major electrical accident, injury or equipment failure has occurred. With branches on all Islands offering construction, service, maintenance and Solar PV, other firms cannot match American’s depth, expertise or longevity. “Generations of kamaaina trust American Electric as top-notch electricians,” said American’s CEO Tom Vincent, who has been with the company 47 years since starting as an apprentice. “Local people know we’ll still be here to take care of them when all the others have closed up or moved on.” JULY 21, 2013 • 3

CV CONSTRUCTION
The smooth operators of home remodeling By KYLE GALDEIRA s its business continues to expand on a foundation of 15-plus years of experience serving Hawaii, CV Construction LLC remains dedicated to providing stellar customer service regardless of how big or small the job is. Chuan “Sam He and Victor Yeung make up the company’s “C and “V, and while the operation is growing after years of continued success, it remains just the right size necessary for helping local clients with their construction and remodeling needs. Victor, who is project manager for CV Construction LLC, explained the company is not so big that it loses touch with its mission of providing unsurpassed customer service, yet not too small to prevent it from handling multiple jobs at once — including new house builds, kitchen and bathroom renovations and commercial projects. “We’re definitely more of a family-oriented company. We consult the customer as opposed to dictating each job, said Victor. “We try to help our clients out, and that level of service really sets us apart from the competition. Recently CV Construction LLC opened a Kalihi office and showroom at 1095 Dillingham Blvd. #I7 to complement its original location at 1018 Smith St. in downtown Honolulu. “We’re here to stay, we’re not going any-

By not contracting all the jobs out, we’re able to keep costs down for our clients and give them that peace of mind.â€? Victor stresses that with every new construction project or renovation of an existing structure, communication plays an integral role in making the process run smoothly. Victor and his team of experienced builders and planners, who are all either related or close family friends, keep clients apprised through each step of the job. “It’s a tedious process to renovate a house, whether it’s something simple like remodeling a bathroom or flooring system all the way to building a brand new house,â€? Victor said. “We help our clients through the process by keeping them informed through each step of the way. “No project is going to go perfectly, but we try our best to communicate and keep our customers informed. Wasn’t the thought of coming home and taking a shower or bath comforting? The bathroom can be one of the most comforting rooms in your house. Nothing can make you feel more comfortable than relaxing in a newly remodeled bathroom. The bathroom can also be one of the most dangerous places in the house. There are more than 200,000 accidents in the United States that are bathroom-related every year, according to reports. BIA HAWAII
Avoid lawn stress this summer
• Water your lawn in the early morning to reduce evaporation so plants dry by midmorning. Letting the leaves stay wet for too long can lead to disease.
BY KAREN NAKAMURA are, patience and a little bit of knowledge can make the difference between a lush, healthy lawn and an arid brown eyesore. But proper lawn care is more complicated than setting out a sprinkler every once in a while. You can water or fertilize a lawn too little or too much, and even the time of day matters. Overwatering is the most common lawn care mistake homeowners make, according to the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. It can damage or even kill a lawn. Too much water leads to a shallow root system; it makes a lawn more vulnerable to weeds, insects and diseases. It also reduces tolerance to drought and other environmental stresses. Before you pull out the hose, though, you need to find out how much water your lawn is getting by measuring the irrigation and precipitation rates. You don’t need sophisticated tools to figure this out; all you need is a coffee can. Here are some tips from The Cornell Cooperative Extension Service:
C
• Don’t mow your lawn too short. Keep it about three inches tall to reduce stress and pest problems.
• Wait until fall to fertilize. If you fertilize in the spring, you will get fast-growing leaves, but weak roots, which will make the plants more susceptible to diseases and insects.
• Determine the irrigation rate by placing a can on an area that is being watered and taking note of how much water is in the can after 15 minutes.
your lawn for as many minutes a week as it takes to achieve precipitation plus watering that totals 1 inch.
• Calculate the precipitation amount by leaving a can in the yard for a week and seeing how much rainwater collects in it.
Heeding these few guidelines will go a long way in helping you maintain and enjoy your lawn, even through the hot, dry summer. Visit www.biahawaii.org for more tips and information.

SERVCO HOME & APPLIANCE DISTRIBUTION JULY 21 • 2013 9
Check out the latest innovations from GE S ervco Home & Appliance Distribution has provided Hawaii residents with the latest, premium appliances while offering superior customer and delivery services. This summer, Servco is introducing the latest innovations from GE, all of which will soon be on display at Servco’s showroom in Mapunapuna. One of the most recent introductions is the GE CafÊ Series French Door Refrigerator, the first refrigerator with a hot water dispenser, so there’s no more waiting for water to boil. This product allows you to make hot drinks and prepare hot foods easier than ever before. With four pre-programmed settings for the most common foods and drinks, hot water is dispensed at a perfectly accurate temperature every time. In addition to this, the refrigeration filter purifies water, removing 98 percent of five trace pharmaceuticals from water and ice.

Other features include a Hands Free Auto-Fill that lets you walk away while the dispenser automatically fills your container, TwinChill Evaporators, which separates climates in the fresh food and freezer section to help keep food fresher longer, and it is Energy Star Qualified. Lastly, the stainless steel and counter-depth design offers a professional, built-in look that fits nearly flush with surrounding cabinetry. Also coming to Hawaii this summer is the GE Profile Series 30 inch Built-In
Double Convection Wall Oven. Like the CafĂŠ French Door Refrigerator, this product is assembled in the U.S. Key features include True Convection, which bakes your food evenly in both ovens; a Ten-Pass Bake Element that allows large and small dishes to brown evenly with two, full-coverage elements; and Self-Clean with Steam Clean in both ovens, which makes cleaning simple and easy. What really sets this oven apart is
the new Notification Lighting feature that lets you know the status of your oven functions with a quick glance. The appearance of the Profile Wall Oven follows the new design that has been developed for the GE and GE Profile brands. The new style takes a contemporary approach and reflects high quality and durability with purposeful design touches that enhance ease-of-use. In addition, appliances with the new look blend beautifully with previous GE and GE Profile models.
The next generation of Dishwashers have arrived!
Bosch’s new and improved dishwasher line is 3dB quieter, 3 inches deeper and many models have 3 racks. It has been rated the quietest dishwasher in North America, has 30% more loading area and now comes with a recessed handle or a flush handle to give you a total of four designs available in black, white, stainless steel and custom panel finishes.

The best trip can be to your back yard t’s a widely known “secret that family vacations aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be. Traveling can be a costly hassle with too many negatives that overshadow the fun. That’s why a growing number of Americans are rediscovering the fun that can be had at home, and taking steps to make their back yards as inviting and enjoyable as any far-off vacation destination. Summer vacation travel costs the average American family about $1,180 per person, according to an American Express survey. Imagine if a family of four invested the cost of this summer’s vacation into upgrading their back yard with the addition of a swimming pool or hot tub. They could create an oasis of family fun that they’ll enjoy for years. There’s a reason why virtually every great hotel in a great location has a pool and hot tub: people love recreation and relaxation. When it comes to creating a resort-like vacation experience in your back yard, nothing fits the bill better than a swimming pool or hot tub. A swimming pool is one home improvement that pays for itself in multiple ways, from increasing your home value and reducing travel costs to improving relation-
I
ships with loved ones. The majority of pool owners (75 percent) say their swimming pool turns the back yard into an everyday vacation spot, according to research by the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals. Four out of five pool owners say it’s a great way to entertain guests, and nearly half say
it’s the perfect place to connect with family and guests. Hot tub owners feel the same way. Among owners, 57 percent consider the back yard their sanctuary and believe their hot tub promotes entertaining and fosters quality time with loved ones. What’s more,
77 percent of owners say time in their hot tub is one of the few things that truly relieves stress. Though the economy continues to be a factor for improvement-minded homeowners, swimming pools and hot tubs are a natural fit for those opting to stay put and improve their current homes. And while adding an installation can be a serious investment, a family of four that would normally spend the average amount of $4,750 per summer on vacation travel could conceivably pay for a pool or hot tub by foregoing those travel costs for a few years. If you’re considering adding a pool or hot tub to your outdoor living space, rely on APSP’s online member locator to find an APSP Certified Professional in your area. Demand for outdoor living spaces continues, with the American Society of Landscape Architects listing pools and hot tubs as hot trends for 2013. Refining outdoor living spaces with improvements such as built-in cooking facilities, composite or wooden decks, patios and natural landscaping can further enhance the usability and appeal of a swimming pool or hot tub. Surprising ways hot tubs heat up relationships O n average, working adults spend less than an hour per day socializing and relaxing, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistic's American Time Use Survey. Yet a host of research — and common sense — tells us that spending time together in a social, relaxing way is essential to building and maintaining healthy relationships. Recreating that spark or special connection with your spouse or significant other, free from the distractions of everyday life, isn’t as difficult as you may think. The answer can actually be found in your own backyard when you add a hot tub to your outdoor living space. The therapeutic benefits of hot tubs are well documented — 79 percent of owners say they value the therapeutic health benefits their hot tubs present, according to a survey by the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) — but many owners point to another significant benefit: the ability to spend more time with their partners. Seventy-seven percent of owners say their hot tub is one of the few things that can truly take them away from the day-to-day stresses of life and allow them to reconnect with their partner. Here are three surprising ways hot tubs can add some spice to your relationship: No distractions The relaxed atmosphere of a hot tub promotes mean-
ingful interaction, owners reveal. Hot tub owners typically say they use their hot tubs as a way to connect, and 82 percent say they are extremely satisfied with the level of relaxation it provides. Relaxing together outdoors, enjoying nature and each other's company without the distraction of ever-present digital devices, is a great way for couples to rediscover the things that drew them together in the first place. Stress soothing Life can be pretty stressful. Countless studies tell us that too much stress is harmful on a number of levels — physically, mentally and socially. Common stressors such as money are leading causes of strife in marriages and even lead to divorce. The warm water and effervescence of hot tubs relieve stress and soothe sore muscles, allowing couples to refocus on what's most important in their lives: each other. The vacation effect Something about vacation spells romance for couples; more than one getaway has led to a new addition to the family nine months later. While taking a trip more than once or twice a year isn’t always practical — the average American family spends about $1,180 per person on vaca-
tion travel according to an American Express survey — a hot tub can create the vacation effect in your own backyard, and allow you to experience that special feeling of romance every day.
Spicing up your relationship begins with the right tub, and finding the right hot tub starts with a professional you can trust. TENIBAC KITCHEN CABINETS & CASEWORK
Providing the quality service you deserve D esigning your kitchen involves more than just placing boxes on the wall, which is what many of the less expensive cabinet companies do. If you’re going to invest time and money into your home, then invest the time to learn about your kitchen designer. To start with, is your designer asking you what you want to achieve when remolding your kitchen? Are you looking for more space or a more convenient way to access the space in your kitchen? This is also known as ergonomics: the study of designing equipment and devices to fit the human body, its movement and its cognitive abilities. If you have a small kitchen, you’ll want more usable space that is easy to access, while allowing the design to flow well. Is your designer asking you about your budget? And what does it include or not include? Here are some tips on how to answer these questions:
• Make a list of what your budget includes like cabinets, pulls or knobs, appliances, etc. Just as important, make a list of what it does not like electrical work, plumbing, etc. • Let the designer know that you are going to get other quotes with this same list. He or she might try to match or be under your budget to get the job. Please take note: Is your budget reasonable and are you looking for low, medium or high end cabinets? A tip is to ask what kind of warranty comes with the cabinets, what kind of finish is on them and how long it will last in our humid, salty air? Then, of course, there is style. Are you looking for traditional, modern, contemporary and Hawaiian or island style? How is this going to complement your house and enrich the look of your kitchen? This will require showing you many different cabinet door styles and countertops. Tenibac Kitchen Cabinets & Casework has more than 300 door styles in its showroom. The company specializes in fusing custom cabinets with affordable pricing. The

Here’s to the Real You If seeing your reflection has you cringing these days, don’t take your mirrors down. Instead, do some “inner feng shui” work that leads to a celebration of your inner beauty Judgment of self We are so critical of ourselves because we believe that beauty gives us the right to be loved and accepted. In reality, our appearance has nothing to do with our wor thiness, yet we learn otherwise from the media, our friends and family.
with
Alice Inoue
QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I read your article on mirrors, and I got inspired to put mirrors in my home to expand the space and bring in good energy. I love the effect. The problem is that I am overweight and unattractive, and I now find myself cringing internally when I see a glimpse of myself. What do you suggest I do?
he way I see it, only two options are available. One is to take down the mirrors, energetically reduce the spacious feel of your home and let the negative thoughts about your body and appearance rule your life. Or do some “inner feng shui” work, using this as an opportunity to move to a new awareness about your body. Of course, I suggest that you choose the second option. Keep the mirrors up, gain a new perspective and feel good when you see your reflection.
T
Who sees themselves as beautiful? Your question reminded me of a Dove commercial that came out a few months ago. It was geared toward women, garnering more than 100 million views. The commercial is a shor t film where an FBI-trained sketch ar tist draws portraits of women first based on their own self-perception and then based on the perception of a stranger. The strangers’ descriptions were regularly more positive, depicting how the subjects actually looked. The point is that women tend to be overcritical about their appearance, failing to see their true beauty. The ad sends the message to women viewers that we are more beautiful than we think and that the ideal the media bombards us with is not necessarily what others use to measure our beauty. Never theless, according to a recent survey, only 4 percent of women think they are beautiful.
It’s all in the mind
Accepting ourselves as beautiful is hard Many of us, even men, have a hard time feeling good when we stray from the physical ideal we have in our minds, but women especially have a hard time accepting themselves and seeing their true beauty, obsessing about how they look. When I look back on photos of myself from 10 or 20 years ago, I now see that I looked fine, but I distinctly remember not feeling good about myself at the time, seeing so many things about me as extremely unattractive. In retrospect, the way I thought I looked was at odds with the way I actually looked. My perspective was warped.
Our perception of beauty and how it relates to us physically is skewed by unrealistic images in the media. We buy into the perfect look, whatever that is, and measure our self-worth from that vantage point. We examine ever y perceived flaw, every deviation from the perfect specimen — too fat, too thin, too short, too tall, too hairy, not hairy enough and so on — until we no longer see our true beauty. This negates the qualities that really count like kindness, humor, generosity, compassion, loyalty and integrity, qualities that transform our outer appearance, which is why others may see us differently from the so-called perfect media image. Physical perfection is an unreasonable goal, and measuring beauty on such a superficial scale will always yield low self-worth. Inner feng shui It’s time to start changing your perceptions, or thoughts, of self so that you can keep those mirrors up. Train your mind to perceive beauty differently from the way
you have always perceived it. The truth is there, but you have to bring it from the subconscious mind to the conscious mind so that it becomes part of your reality. By doing the following exercise, you will create new, neural pathways to help balance your perception so that you can see the bigger picture, gaining a new perspective. Answer the following questions daily:
• Who praises you and shows you love, befriends you, and cares about you, even though you do not look the way you want to?
• Who do you love, admire and respect, even though that person does not fit the classic mold for beauty?
• Do you know someone who is physically beautiful, yet you would in no way switch places with that individual, because of the things you see in his or her personality that are a “turn off?”
Train your mind to look beyond the superficial to the substantive! It’s hard to do at first, because your mind will not want to go there, but trust that things can change.
Move toward the truth of who you are The “inner feng shui” exercises will help you create a belief system centered on who you truly are. We all have perceived flaws, but we can view them through the eyes of self-love, embracing our own uniqueness.

oday’s bathrooms are evolving into relaxing rooms with many benefits of a spa. Whether remodeling an existing bathroom or building a new one, nature-themed trends add comfort and style. Bathrooms are one of the three most remodeled rooms, along with kitchens and master bedrooms. Bathroom design trends take cues from nature — from environmentally friendly products and earth tones to installing bigger windows to add more natural light.

Incorporate natural design elements Earth tones, nature-inspired patterns, wood and stone materials, sustainable products and energy-efficient fixtures are staples of today’s top trends. “Adding comfort and efficiency to your bathroom can be as easy as replacing existing products with Energy Star-qualified options, said Kathy Krafka Harkema, Pella Windows and Doors spokesperson. “Today, you can have it all when it comes to incorporating new windows that are more energy-efficient than cold, old single-pane or clear glass options. Energy-efficient showerheads, motion-sensing faucets, water-conserving toilets, ambient lighting and high-performing replacement windows, like Pella 350 Series vinyl windows with double or triple-pane insulating glass, will help make your bathroom more comfortable and help save energy year-round. When it comes to bathroom design, go natural with a mosaic tile backsplash behind the sink or install a tile, stone or brick wall in the shower. Materials like ceramic tiles, wood cabinets, bamboo mats, stone countertops and natural fibers like cotton or sisal rugs help create a calming atmosphere. Brighten up with color Bold, bright colors can be overpowering in a small bathroom, but color accents of poppy red, nectarine orange or turquoise blue can breathe new energy and life into a drab bathroom. Accent with a splash of emerald green, the 2013 Pantone color of the year, or other bold colors in tiles, towels, bath mats, artwork or accessories.

Different is Good When it comes to creating a unique space in your home or office, think outside the box by using your furniture in unexpected ways
ptions, options! As a designer I’m always looking for more options for the spaces I create for my clients. Some spaces are small and cozy, others are large and spacious, and no two clients want the same colors and decorating styles. The pieces I need are rarely exactly what I want, so I’ve trained my eye to see things not for what they are, but what they could be. I love to use pieces of furniture in unexpected ways. You’ve seen many times the multipurpose ottoman that can serve as additional seating, storage or a coffee table. This is exactly what I’m talking about: Why not look at other pieces to see how they can make your space more unique? This column is all about tips to train your design eye. With my Cathy’s Marketplace showroom and reStyle, our second location in Kakaako, I have two fantastic playgrounds full of furniture and home accents to play with and get inspired by. Take these two tables. Some may see them as very limiting because of their size or style. I see endless possibilities. This marble dining table from Italy seats six. Before it came to us on consignment, the owner paired it with very traditional chairs. This table may speak to someone with a larger home who would be attracted to its style, but someone with a more formal dining area may want a table that can seat eight. If you use it for dining, I would mix things up a bit and pair it with vintage chairs or fully upholstered dining chairs with a large graphic pattern. Either would be hot! But what else could I do with this table? How can I think outside the box? What about using it as an amazing statement desk? This would be a great piece for a man or woman and would fit in

an urban, modern, Asian, island or Mediterranean setting. In fact, it would look good with just about any décor — all you have to do to blend it more seamlessly is accessorize it in your chosen style. Or how about as a conference table in an office? A large buffet? A display table for a store? The possibilities are endless, especially because the style of this table is at once traditional and contemporary and will stand the test of time.
Next we have a beautiful Mediterraneaninspired accent table that is 32-inches in diameter. It could create a challenge as it’s definitely too big for a smaller space. But how would you use it in a larger space? In an average-size home, this could be perfect in a foyer under a beautiful vase of flowers. In larger homes, it could be a wonderful accent table used to display a piece of art alongside larger furniture pieces. But a trained eye wouldn’t rule this table out even for a smaller setting. Why not use it as a small bistro table, as we’ve done at the showroom? In an apartment or as part of a sitting area in a bedroom, this could serve as a beautiful accent table where you could have your coffee or tea, or in really small spaces, even as your main dining table. As I’ve always said, small spaces don’t have to be small in style!
Keep looking for inventive ways to use pieces in different ways. You’ll create a more unique space — and each time you look at the piece, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing it was your trained eye that found the perfect spot for it.

A construction project that’s built to last W hen it comes to construction, standard materials can differ from one contractor to another. The selection of materials can make the difference not only in the cost of construction when it comes time to build, but also in the cost of maintenance and the lifespan of the products in your new home improvement project. Atlas Construction Inc. believes that building designs should be low-maintenance and have a long lifespan. The variation in building materials not only lies in the material itself, but also in the different levels of quality within each item. One example is granite countertops. You have probably seen them offered at a low price in the classified ads, but did you know that there are different levels of granite and that the grade of the material highly influences the cost? Atlas Construction uses

When you use an inferior grade of a building material for your standard components, the initial construction cost is lowered. When you do this throughout the
whole project, the overall contract price becomes lower as well. Problems arise over time, however, and maintenance costs will increase as the lifespan of your project decreases. This means that each component made with a sub-standard grade of material needs to be either repaired or replaced. The overall cost becomes higher

This gives homeowners the added value of knowing that their construction project is built to last, low-maintenance and made with building materials that will have a long lifespan.

RISOURCE ENERGY
Award-winning solar company heats up BY MELANIE MEI ess than one year from introducing a new Japan-made, thin-film PV panel to Hawaii residents, Risource Energy is now recognized as the “Top U.S. Residential Installer in 2012” by Solar Frontier. A small team from Risource Energy paid a very brief visit to Miyazaki, Japan, to accept the award, which was present-

While in Japan, the team toured the Solar Frontier factory and trained on-site at the corporate Solar Frontier Training Facility in Miyazaki, Japan. Solar Frontier is currently the No. 1 CIS thin-film producer in the world and was even mentioned in a July 2013 online article as a “solar stock to

watch.” A link to the article can be found on Risource Energy’s Facebook page. That makes Risource Energy the top US Residential 2012 installer of the world’s No. 1 CIS PV manufacturer. And for a small company out of Honolulu, Hawaii, that’s quite an accomplishment. To say it’s been an eventful year would be an understatement for Risource Energy president and founder Darren Furumoto, and his solar team. And yet, the Risource Energy team has managed to pull it off in its inaugural year of re-branding and building the company from being the CIS division of Alternate Energy to its current, independent “Risource Energy.” “(Risource Energy) was founded to uphold the quality standards (we) wanted

PACIFIC ISLANDS WINDOW TREATMENTS JULY 21 • 2013 25
A company that has your windows covered P acific Islands Window Treatments is a full-service company that opened for business at the beginning of 2013. The success of the company thus far is due to the combined knowledge of its window covering consultants and expert installers. When it comes to purchasing window treatments for your home or office, they will do everything for you. The company can help you select the type of treatments that will fit your windows, then measure and install them. In-house installers and an electrician install all of the manual and electric window treatments without needing to subcontract work. Whether it’s a bay window, 20-foot window or a skylight, Pacific Islands Window Treatments has a custom solution for it. The staff will try to look at any job, big or small, and give advice on which treatments would work best in the long run. This is valuable advice, since getting a low-quality product that will last for a year is wasteful and will end up costing more than doing it right the first time. While motorized window treatments are a luxury, sometimes they are a necessity. If you have a double-height window, motorization is the way to go. We are able to offer a large selection of Electric Window Treatments that include battery, low voltage and high voltage window treatments.

TOWN & COUNTRY BUILDERS LLC JULY 21 • 2013 27
Simple upgrades for your next condominium project W e live in an age where acronyms and abbreviations are considered normal and there are no dictionaries to turn to for help in deciphering them. They speed up communication time when you are texting or emailing because we live in a hurried society. On some occasions, they actually slow communication channels because it takes additional time to try and figure out what is being conveyed. LOL (lots of luck) in figuring them out. With that being said, K.I.S. stands for “keeping it simple” when you are considering options for remodeling your condominium unit for a great R.O.I. (return on investment). All of us realize that the best places to put our remodeling dollars are kitchens and bathrooms. Many renters are searching for units that are modern and they are willing to pay top dollar for the effort. It does not need to be elaborate to transform the space from 1978 or so into a current unit that is eye-catching and loaded with appeal. You will be able to recap the expenditures in a short period of time. It will most certainly make you proud to show the remodeled space to others. How attractive is that two bedroom/one bath unit that has an outdated look to it anyway? It is probably very difficult to rent. In the course of 30 days, it can be transformed into a dynamic, desirable space that prospective tenants will be falling over themselves to rent at market prices. Simple upgrades like kitchen cabinets with stainless-steel, barrel-type handles, new countertops, sink, faucet, under cabinet puck lights and installation of clear glass in some of the upper cabinets yields an attractive look. For flooring, install click-and-lock luxurious horizontal vinyl planks throughout the unit for a continuous look, or choose Armstrong’s Alterna, which captures the timeless look of stone. For the bathroom, keep it simple with white tubs and white-onwhite, cultured-marble wall surrounds and matching brushed-nickel finishes. Town & Country Builders LLC is a licensed general contracting design build firm, which has been serving Oahu for the past 32 years in the construction industry. It specializes in custom homes, remodels, additions, designer kitchens, bathrooms, Americans with Disability Act (ADA) modifications/improvements, construction of package homes, demolition, and it offers full-construction services including planning and permitting. New Great Name, Same Great Company “HAWAII’S BEST FLOORING”
Let’s Talk Flooring Good Sunday Morning to you! This week I would like to talk about proper subfloor preparation and its importance in achieving a quality flooring installation. As licensed wood installation professionals, we follow the guidelines of the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA). One of the first things you have to consider is level of moisture in the subfloor. The ASTM standard calcium chloride test should be conducted to determine the level of vapor emission from concrete subfloors. The “pounds per 1000 sf” number will indicate what needs to be done next. Another important issue to address before the floor goes down is the flatness of the floor. The NWFA recommends that the floor be flat to within 3/16” in 10 feet. We grind the highest spots and pour leveling compound in the lowest. To learn more, call HAWAII’S BEST FLOORING COMPANY or attend our next seminar. Don’t be daunted by drywall projects hether you’re finishing a basement or adding space, many home improvement projects require you to replace or add drywall. These days, many homeowners are considering hanging and finishing drywall themselves, giving their projects a complete doit-yourself flair and helping to cut expenses. As you plan your summer home improvement projects, consider adding the drywall portion of the task to your to-do list. Nearly 80 percent of homeowners who remodeled their home, or built a new one in the last two years, did all or a portion of the construction themselves, according to a survey by Priority Metrics Group. Anitra Mecadon, host of DIY Network’s Mega Dens, is working with National Gypsum, the maker of Purple drywall products, to help homeowners install and finish their drywall during this summer’s home improvement season. She provided some easy tips to ensure their projects look professionally done when finished:
7. Using joint compound and paper joint tape, apply a coat of joint compound to the joints and firmly embed the tape to ensure a good bond, then let it dry.
W
1. Choose the right drywall product to ensure your walls are built to last. For example, Purple products are fire resistant, provide unparalleled resistance to mois-
8. Apply joint compound over the taped joints and fastener heads — feathering out further with each coat — then let dry.
9. Using sandpaper, sand excess joint compound to create a smooth surface, making sure you don’t damage the drywall face paper.
10. Make sure the finished wall or ceiling is free from dirt, grease, dust or anything that might affect your primer or finished paint. ture, mold, mildew, scratches or dents, and can even help reduce the noise heard between rooms.
4. Cut the back paper so it separates, using a utility knife or keyhole saw to cut around electrical outlets, windows and doors.
2. Measure the wall and ceiling space twice to determine the amount of drywall needed. You only get one cut, so double check your measurements. Using a utility knife, score the front of the drywall deep into the core.
5. Trim rough edges using a rasp or utility knife until the edges are clean and smooth.
3. Snap the board so it’s connected only by the back paper.
6. Hang the drywall horizontally against the framing and attach using fasteners such as screws or nails. Remember to hang and attach ceilings first. Ask a friend for help.
“If I can install or finish drywall, anyone can,” said Mecadon, who has hung plenty of drywall. “Whether you’re building a new home, adding a media room or remodeling your kitchen or bath this summer, Purple products give you what you need to get the most out of your walls.” To learn more about drywall techniques and the benefits of using high-performance Purple products, visit AskforPurple.com. Local company embraces government initiative to bring solar to the masses A
s a leader in Hawaii’s clean-energy movement, Bonterra Solar has helped thousands of people in Hawaii make the transition toward solar power. In the process, the locally owned company has become Hawaii’s most trusted solar installer and has played a pivotal role in securing Hawaii’s clean-energy future. Now, with the help of a new government initiative, the company is excited to bring the power of the sun to even more families in Hawaii. Recently, the state took new measures to ensure that solar power remains attainable for all its citizens when Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed SB1087 — a bill aimed to make solar affordable to the masses — into law. The bill has been met with applause from green-energy advocates and leaders in the renewable-energy industry like Bonterra Solar’s Andrew Yani. “We’ve been following this bill very closely and are very excited to see it signed by the governor,” said Yani. “This bill will make solar power even more attainable to all of Hawaii’s citizens.” 32 • JULY 21, 2013
Here’s how it will work: Families in Hawaii will be eligible to pay back the upfront cost of solar power through a charge on their monthly electric bill with a special low rate secured by the government. The bill is tied
to a larger initiative undertaken by the state known as the Green Energy Market Securitization (GEMS) program. “We’re doing truly great things here as a state to ensure that Hawaii is leading the
country in renewable energy. If you look at the 65 percent tax credit that’s currently on the table, and the GEMS program that will open up solar power to the masses, it’s a very exciting time for Hawaii. As a locally owned leader in the solar industry, Bonterra Solar is thrilled to help extend the promise of solar to more of our neighbors,” Yani added. Gov. Abercrombie trumpeted the positive impact that affordable solar power will have in shaping the stability of Hawaii’s future. “This new measure allows us to bring clean energy improvements within reach for a broader segment of the community. More of Hawaii’s residents will be able to take advantage of green devices that will ultimately lower electricity bills and contribute to the state’s clean energy growth,” said the governor. “I’d have to say that we’re looking at a really bright future for solar power and renewable energy in Hawaii,” Yani said. “I’d urge anyone who’s been on the fence about solar before to call one of our trusted solar experts today to learn more.”
