JOANNE ROMERO
Here’s a recipe for disaster readiness ommends having at least one gallon of water per person, per day, for at least three days on hand.
uesday afternoon I finally made my way back to Hawaii after being on the Mainland for a month. I can’t even describe my relief. Not only was I happy to finally come home, but I was also happy to have gotten there without delay. Leading up to takeoff, I found myself constantly checking the weather along with websites tracking flight statuses. Nearly every flight I checked the day before was canceled because of Flossie. My new brother-in-law mentioned how often these warnings and watches come and how often they result in “nothing.” I couldn’t help but think of how dangerous that type of perspective could be. I found myself thinking how much better prepared I was because I didn’t think that way. Unfortunately, when I got back and checked on our stock of disaster-kit essentials, I found that I wasn’t so prepared after all. Now I’m learning that letting go of certain habits may help me stock up, starting with some basics.
sible is usually the right way. However, if we were ever left with just the food in our cupboards to survive, we’d have only un-popped popcorn, crackers and tomato soup. Now I’m restocking and will start with protein-packed canned goods, along with veggies such as carrots and green beans. I’ll even sneak in some splurges that would otherwise throw off my healthy eating: Spam, SpaghettiOs and clam chowder.

Leading the way in design, construction services
very new remodeling project under taken by Homeworks Construction draws on the design/build firm’s 20 years of experience in serving local clients. Many of these projects, ranging from kitchen and bath remodeling to additions and new custom homes, have been recognized with awards, most recently four awards in the BIA Renaissance remodeling competition. The company has also been named BIA Remodeler of the Year and is ranked among the nation’s “Top 500” residential remodelers by Qualified Remodeler magazine. Homeworks CEO Jim Byxbee emphasizes, however, that winning awards has never been a motivating factor in producing quality work. “Our goal is to provide personalized service and high-quality workmanship for the best possible price,” Byxbee said. “Our designers and builders
E
invest the same relative amount of care and energy in ensuring that the small, low-budget job turns out to be successful and fills the needs of the client as they would with a high-budget project. A company’s reputation rests on the satisfaction of clients, whether the job is large or small. Referrals from clients is the best form of advertising.” Byxbee pointed out that many new clients became aware of Homeworks through its Build New Or ReDo Radio Show — which Byxbee co-hosts with Rick Hamada at 9 a.m. Saturdays on KHVH AM830 — or through the Build New Or ReDo free seminars held at the showroom in the Homeworks Building. “Our slogan, ‘All design and construction services under one roof,’ accurately describes what Homeworks offers,” Byxbee said. “From planning and permitting to demolition and excavating, founda-
tion work, framing, interior and exterior finishes, all the way to completion ... a project coordinator and selections specialist are assigned to every client, to meet with them regularly and make sure all terms of the contract are understood and fulfilled.” Sarah VanDeVanter, a member of the Homeworks design/build team, commented on a recent Hahaione Valley remodel. “The first step was a site visit with Jim Byxbee to evaluate the project and come up with a scope of work to match the client’s goals and budget. “We commandeered the carport area to create curb appeal with a covered lanai and railing. The added square footage provided space to expand the cramped kitchen, create a separate laundry room, office and foyer.” VanDeVanter noted that a new freestanding garage incorporating secured storage was constructed and the drive-
way expanded with new concrete. As requested by the client, stained concrete flooring was added in the new office. A specialty mason worked with the owner to create a floor that would be “durable, low maintenance and easy on the budget.” The mason hand-stamped the concrete floor of the new covered lanai to simulate natural stone. “The client was great about finding inspiration and had a binder full of ideas for her kitchen. She selected materials for beauty as well as function, including quar tz counters for the sink area and golden lightning granite for the range and custom circular bar. Our kitchen designer Sean Bradshaw worked hand in hand with her to customize every inch of space, including specialty glass doors on the pantry cabinet and a rounded column under the bar,” VanDeVanter said. PACIFIC ISLANDS SOLAR
The straight answers to solar energy questions P acific Islands Solar believes that there are questions the consumer needs to be aware of in order to make an informed decision when considering solar energy. Today, many companies offer various incentives to get consumers to call them, leading homeowners to believe they are getting a good deal. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and this trend stops the process of evaluating a system, which is so important in today’s solar environment. The inducements do not address the quality of the modules, construction methods, servicing of equipment or long-term service life of the equipment. Pacific Island Solar believes the customer comes first and aims to provide the best equipment with the best installation. Consider the following prior to purchasing or leasing a PV System. • The PV system will be installed on your roof. Good roofing practices need to be followed so the roof does not leak and the PV modules stay on your roof during high winds. • Purchasing, leasing and Power Purchasing Agreements are
three options to get solar energy. The latter two options contract you to an agreement of up to 20 years or longer, which may have some disadvantages. Purchasing also has its pitfalls if the wrong equipment is installed and problems occur. Pacific Islands Solar consultants can explain the pros and cons of each of these options.
PACIFIC ISLANDS SOLAR contact // 841-7756 web // Pacificislandsconstruction.net
• Few PV manufacturers are profitable, and as a result, more performance issues have come to light. Most solar contractors submit bids to consumers based on the lowest equipment cost they can get and are not concerned about future ramifications to the buyer. Pacific Islands Solar believes this is not right and cares about the customer’s future. • As more manufacturers are going out of business or leaving the industry, warranties are becoming worthless. There will be only about a dozen PV module manufactures left after the dust clears with the current consolidation.
Building To Your Lifestyle!
• Equipment warranties are written to protect the manufacturers and are not guarantees. Warranties exclude things like damage that occurs during shipping.
• Special offers being advertised can be misleading. The goal of advertising is to get you to buy a product, so beware that there always is something you need to know that might change your mind about what a great deal the special offer is.
Pacific Islands Solar is a part of Pacific Islands Construction, a general contractor, roofing contractor and solar contractor. The company advises you to make an informed solar decision.

ISLAND COOLING LLC
Here’s an innovative home-cooling product R unning quietly in the attic of Kumu Vasconcello’s Hawaii Kai home is a breakthrough technology in energyefficient home cooling. Unseen from the outside of the home, with no hole in the roof, the Whole House Fan quietly draws hot air out of the living space through a ceiling intake. The system cools both the home’s living space and attic at a fraction of the cost of air conditioning (A/C) systems. “I run my Whole House Fan instead of my A/C and save an average of $100 per month,” said Kumu Vasconcellos of Hawaii Kai. “It’s a great way to cool my home!” The popularity of this alternative cooling system is growing as homeowners discover how effective it is. Throughout Oahu, more than 400 homeowners have taken steps towards in-home comfort and lower electrical bills by having Whole House Fans installed. I call it my stealth air conditioner,” said Cliff Baptista of Kapolei. “It draws cool air into my house in the evening and sucks out all the hot air.” “Homeowners today are more aware of the need for energy efficiency and are actively looking for better ways to cool their

homes,” said Ivan Whitworth of Island Cooling LLC. “The Whole House Fan is a perfect fit for our island lifestyle. Rather than having to close windows and doors and hiding out with chilled air, the Whole House Fan takes advantage of natural airflow and allows us to live a more open life.” Founded in 2008 to bring energy-efficient cooling solutions to Hawaii, Island Cooling LLC is Honolulu’s distributor of Quiet Cool Whole House Fans. In addition to larger units for whole home cooling, the company also has bedroom-sized units for home offices and bedrooms. “The Whole House Fan is designed to provide on-demand cooling,” said Al Whitworth, a Certified Green Professional with Island Cooling. “You can use it just as you would a ceiling fan, but since it’s taking the heat out of a home, it’s a lot more effective.”
Ewa Beach resident Clayton Choi agreed. Clayton installed his fan in early 2012 and has been using it exclusively for cooling his home in the two years since.
“You gotta get one,” he said. Call 672-2300 for a free consultation, or visit www.islandcooling.com for more information.

The M250 microinverter has now become one of the most powerful inverters on the market. Coupled with Enphase’s technology and track record, the M250 is the standard by which all microinverters are measured. What the introduction of the M250 means is that consumers will now be able to take full advantage of higher power panels, thus producing more power with a lesser amount of panels.
Enphase products have always produced optimum results, superior service and outstanding support. Their Enlighten online monitoring system provides consumers with detailed information about their energy production and can alert them if a problem or situation occurs.

BREEZWAY
Check out a ‘Stronghold’ in the window industry I n our homes, some of our favorite places can be the most dangerous. A perfect example is the shower, where you can slip and fall on a glass shower door or window. Because of this, safety regulations have been put in place that require safety glass in showers, tubs, next to doors, stairways and even within 18 inches of the floor. These regulations are there for good reason, and they bring alive an age old saying: safety first. According to national building codes, all window types are required to have safety glass in these locations, except one: the jalousie window. Why is this the exception? Especially when it’s a matter of safety? Well, there are a several reasons, but here are the two biggest. Ovens capable of tempering jalousie blades have never been called for in the United States since most ovens temper larger glass pieces found on doors and picture windows. Another reason is once you temper glass, you cannot cut it. For the do-ityourselfer performing a custom cut to replace one broken blade of jalousie glass, it would be an inconvenience and possibly cost prohibitive to replace it. So what’s being done about it? Breezway’s Halawa factory provided some great answers to these safety questions. Breezway has officially “fired-up” its tempering oven designed for jalousie and louver blades. “As a company, life safety is our highest priority in our factory for our staff and our customers’ homes. It was an obvious choice to install a tempering oven,” stated a Breezway representative. “However there is much more to it than just safety. Tempered glass is four to six times stronger than annealed glass, which is what you buy off the shelf. This means it’s harder to break, or break in to, if you will.” While tempered glass is not a security product, Breezway does incorporate it in its new line called the Stronghold. “It’s a high-performance louver clip that utilizes a mechanical pin inserted through both sides of the tempered glass,” stated Breezway’s representative. “After the pin is installed in the Stronghold, the only way to remove it is with tools, providing a safer, more secure louver window ideal for all elevations. From outside you cannot tell it’s a Stronghold clip.”This impressive design is one you will never find on an ordinary jalousie window.

A Bedtime Story Creating the right space to rest and rejuvenate is as easy as changing your bed’s placement, or covering your mirrors before you turn in for the night
ment of vulnerability. By sleeping under a window, you are not as “protected” as you would be with a solid wall above your head. However, it is much better to have your head under a window, than your bed in an unfavorable position. If you sleep under a window, for protection close the curtains to symbolically create a “solid” wall or attach a headboard to your bed.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I am particularly interested in things I heard about the bedroom when I was growing up. Can you give me the “truth” about what I was told? For instance, “It is bad luck to point your feet at the door,” and other such beliefs. Are they true or are they just silly beliefs?
n my professional dealings for the past dozen or so years, when people find out that I practice, teach and consult on feng shui, they basically respond in one of the following two ways: “Oh my god! That is so awesome. You do feng shui? I totally believe in feng shui. I have a mirror by my door, a fountain in my wealth corner, etc.; or, “Oh, you’re into that touchy feely stuff…yeah, my wife/boss/friend is into all that superstition as well. You’d really get along with them.” In both instances, I just smile and go with the flow, but today I’d like to take the opportunity to address your question in more detail.
I
Feng shui is not a belief In my understanding and practice, feng shui is not a belief, religious or otherwise. It is simply a way to manage the energy in an environment so that it better serves and supports the people living and working there. The practice of feng shui has spread to many countries and cultures over thousands of years, and each culture has its own interpretation of the core principles.
Is there truth to what is said? Is it true that a wind chime will chase away evil spirits or that sleeping with your head pointed to the door will send you to your grave early, or that a mirror in the wrong place invites evil? These beliefs may have originated from a basic feng shui concept with a solid reason behind it, but not every interpretation is true feng shui wisdom.
Here are the top three beliefs about the bedroom and their explanations.
Energy is everywhere Feng shui is about living harmoniously by paying attention to the principles of nature and the energy in the environment. It doesn’t take a scientist to understand that energy is everywhere. It’s a life force in nature and all animate beings and inanimate objects. Do you remember learning in science class that when you break everything down, even a table, to its smallest component you will find molecules in motion? This means that everything in our world is energy, and just because you can’t see the energy, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Bedroom beliefs While some of the common beliefs about bedroom feng shui no-nos are true, they have little to do with potential bad luck.
1. It’s bad luck to sleep with your feet pointed at the door Due to Asian culture and influence, in Hawaii it is a common belief that sleeping with your feet toward the door is bad luck. However, this belief is a misinterpretation of the feng shui rule that you should not sleep in line with the door. Sleeping in the direct pathway of the door is unfavorable because the flow of energy into the room is strongest at the entrance and can measurably disrupt your sleep. Optimally, you should place your bed far from the doorway or out of line with the door, but still facing it so that when you are lying down you can see anyone or anything entering without turning your head. The placement of the bed is all about protection. You want to have an expansive view of the room at all times. 2. It’s bad luck to sleep under a window The theory behind not sleeping under the window is not about bad luck per se. Instead, it is that the window brings in an ele-
3. It’s bad luck to sleep facing a mirror It is not necessarily bad luck to sleep across from a mirror, but mirrors reflect active energy into an environment that should be peaceful and relaxing. Many people I know sleep fine with mirrors in the bedroom; but if you are a person who has a difficult time getting to sleep, having mirrors directly across from your bed could add to the problem. For those with mirrors facing the bed, prop a screen or hang some light curtains in front of the mirror at night. If you have mirrored closet doors, replace them with wood doors or doors made of some other non-reflective material.
There is no such thing as bad luck The way I see it, bad luck doesn’t exist, and it is up to us to create our own luck. If for some reason you are unable to or do not feel the need to change some of the bedroom situations mentioned above, don’t be concerned, you can still have a lucky life. Don’t believe everything you hear!

No-leak skylights When it comes to an improvement that brightens your home, enhances its indoor air quality and boosts energy-efficiency, skylights deliver. Unfor tunately, early skylights had a reputation for being leaky — a problem that simply doesn’t occur with modern, no leak, energy-efficient skylights like those made by Velux America. Pre-engineered flashing kits (the
metal shield that surrounds any opening in a wall or roof) work with all types of roofs, from shingles to metal, to ensure a properly installed skylight won’t leak.
Need fur ther low-maintenance points to make the case for adding a skylight? Not only do modern skylights keep water out, they’re energy efficient as well. Energy

inyl siding has proven to be a great way to maintain your home’s exterior.Wood, fiber cement, stucco, brick — there are nearly as many types of exterior siding as there are colors to paint it. When it comes to low- or nomaintenance siding, vinyl remains the gold standard. In fact, more new homes are built using vinyl siding than any other type of siding product, according to the Vinyl Siding Institute. Vinyl siding never needs to be painted, and when properly installed provides exceptional shielding from the elements. New technology has made modern vinyl siding look better and last longer without fad-
Lighting upgrade Older light fixtures not only look dated, they often use outdated, inefficient bulbs and are lacking in the energy-efficient emphasis that comes with newer fixtures. Upgrading lighting throughout your home is a great way to ensure you won’t have to think about it again any time soon. If a total lighting redesign is out of the question, you can still make your existing light fixtures lower maintenance simply by swapping out old, inefficient incandescent light bulbs with newer, electricity-sipping versions. Options like CFLs and LEDs provide all the light of incandescents while using a fraction of the energy. Energy.gov said Energy Star-rated LEDs use at least 75 percent less power than incandescent bulbs, and last 25 times longer. Imagine the time, hassle and money you’ll save not having to replace bulbs constantly — especially in lights that get a lot of use, like porch lights, or that are hard to reach, like chandeliers.

Remodeling Wisely Managing your budget when designing a space can be tricky. The following smart-spending tips, however, can help you keep the process fun and efficient
n last week’s column, I shared some photos and tips from the designing, remodeling and decorating of Sayumi Bridal at the Waikiki Beach Marriott. This week I have a few more tips you can apply to your own business space. The challenge with any remodel is knowing what to spend your dollars on. After all, most of us are on a budget. Unless you’re doing a complete gutting with all-new finishes, what do you touch and what do you leave alone? Last week you saw the reception area of Sayumi Bridal. For most businesses this is where customers get their first impression, so it’s definitely where you want to spend a major part of your remodeling budget. The ceilings in the reception area were dark and outdated. We wallpapered them, but did not feel it was necessary to spend the money to do the same in the makeup and dressing areas. So what to do with all the heavy molding, trim and paneling there? The easiest and most affordable solution was to make them disappear. We did that by painting all of it

we drew your eye downward with features we wanted to showcase: our beautiful new floor and the pops of apple green on the accent wall and in the drapes. Lighting can also make an impact, so use it to make a statement when you need to. We devoted a good part of the budget to beautiful new light fixtures that replaced the old halogen in the reception area. But in the makeup area we left the ambient ceiling lighting alone and chose to update the all-important task lighting with functional wall sconces. To summarize, it goes without saying that if you have a leaky roof or weatherworn flooring, obviously these need to be addressed in your remodel. But for updates, consider what areas and features will need to make the biggest impact and focus your budget there. Then look at features you don’t want to draw attention to. Think of affordable ways to make them blend in or disappear, and give people something to look at: a punch of color or texture, or an impactful piece of

LEAKMASTER ROOFING
New technology means roofs last even longer R oofing products are constantly evolving as traditional materials, such as asphalt, are improved by using cutting edge science to create fantastic new hybrids. LeakMaster Roofing installs all major systems and is constantly on the lookout for the latest technology that address the problems of the past. Most new benefits fall into one of two categories: they either last longer than previous products or they make your home
cooler — preferably both. A cool roof is a happy roof because it doesn’t degrade as quickly from “thermal shock or UV damage.
Energy Star-rated asphalt shingles Most of the roofs in your neighborhood are probably asphalt shingles (also called “comp shingles). They are still the most popular sloped roofs in Hawaii and there are many good reasons for this. They are moderately priced and perform very reliably when properly installed. If you have to walk on them, they are more forgiving than many other roof types. In short, they are a safe bet. However, traditional comp shingles get very hot with surface temperatures often exceeding 170 degrees in the Hawaiian summer sun. This can make your interior home temps about 5 to 12 degrees hotter than they need to be. The latest Landmark Solaris shingles from CertainTeed are Energy Star rated. LeakMaster
LEAKMASTER ROOFING address // 575-G Cooke St. web // www.leakmaster.com
Roofing is finding a definite move towards cool roofs in general, and the Solaris is a solid performer. This type of roof also has an increased mildew resistance warranty of 15 years and a wind warranty up to 130 mph when properly installed. These are both huge features in Hawaii. Cool roof coatings: acrylic vs. silicone Leakmaster Roofing has been a leader in innovative roof coatings since 1990. The company has pushed for installing “full fabric reinforced systems at 4 to 5 gallons per 100 SF, instead of the more common unreinforced 2-3 gallon systems that inevitably fail. It also pioneered roof coatings, such as the Cool Roof Store Ceramic, that keep you cool in the summer. Leakmaster Roofing has been met with an enthusiastic reception here in Hawaii.
Lately, there has been a big surge in silicone coatings due to their ability to withstand ponding water indefinitely. The newest silicones are now 95 percent solids vs. 69 percent, so you end up with a thicker membrane — 40 mils vs. 22 mils — when the roof is finished. Because silicone is considered “non-sacrificial, meaning it won’t chalk off over time, it’s lifespan is very long. GacoRoof and Apoc warrant their coatings for an impressive 50 years. When applied properly by an approved Installer, labor and warranties of up to 20 years are available on qualifying jobs.
If you are interested in discussing the latest roofing technologies with LeakMaster Roofing, call 591-1900 or visit the showroom at 575-G Cooke St. in Kakaako. Visit www.leakmaster.com for more information.

Feel calm before the storm with a safe window option H urricanes are one of nature’s most powerful forces and pose the greatest threat to life and property in Hawaii. As we have experienced in the past, the Hawaiian Islands are not safe from the destruction and harm caused by these deadly storms. Our tropical waters and warm, moist atmosphere are a lethal recipe for disastrous hurricanes. In fact, the chances of a hurricane hitting Hawaii are rapidly increasing as the ocean temperature escalates because of global warming. Unfortunately, even with technological advances, there is no way of knowing when a hurricane will hit and how much damage it will cause. The history of hurricanes in Hawaii In 1992, Hawaii was hit with the most devastating hurricane it had ever experienced, Hurricane Iniki. An estimated 130 mph winds hit the coast of Kauai, causing nearly $3 billion in damage. More than 14,000 homes and apartments were damaged or destroyed and six deaths were recorded. A decade earlier, Hurricane Iwa caused $250 million in damage. More than 7,426 houses and apartments statewide, and 30 percent on Kauai alone, were affected or destroyed. Quality workmanship for good measure A n important part of any kitchen or bath remodel is taking measurements and drawing a visual map. Measuring the existing cabinets will give you sizes for replacement cabinets. Walls The first step is to measure the walls of where the new cabinets will be placed. The best way to measure a wall is from one corner to the opposite end. It is always helpful to have someone else hold one end of the measuring tape when measuring large areas. Next, measure the ceiling height, starting from the floor. Measuring the ceiling height
will determine the general height of the wall cabinets for proper counter space. When taking measurements, sometimes there are spaces that will make taking accurate measurements difficult. In these situations, it is better to round down to the nearest inch rather than round up. Cabinets for a kitchen design with measurements rounded down will be sure to fit; the extra space can always be hidden with a filler piece. Whereas when rounded up, a whole cabinet may have to be changed to a smaller size to fit. Openings and obstacles It is important to jot down all openings or obstacles, such as windows, doorways or ceiling beams. Measure the placement of the obstacle from one end of the wall and the sizes (width and height) of the obstacle. Appliances Plan on keeping the existing appliances? Take measurements of their sizes to ensure the cabinet design will allow space for them to fit. Similarly, when getting new appliances along with new cabinets, take note of the new sizes.
With existing or replacing appliances, measure their placement from one end of the wall to one side of the existing appliance. If the plan is to relocate appliances to a different area, however, make a note of where.
DA WING TRADING LLC contact // 847-3288 web // www.dawingtrading.com
Sinks and plumbing fixtures Measuring from the center of the sink to one wall will give a reasonably accurate idea of the existing plumbing and which cabinet sizes may work. Also, take the measurements of the existing sink or new sink so the sink cabinet size will be able to fit the sink. Although plumbing can always be
moved, using the existing setup is most cost effective.

Is your roof ready for PV panels? t seems like everywhere you go, people are talking about solar energy, and for good reason. More and more Hawaii homes and businesses are looking into solar installation to help fight rising energy costs. The number of homes and businesses installing solar panels has been on an enormous upswing during the past few years for both residential and commercial properties statewide, or might we say worldwide. And why not? With solar energy, homeowners receive great deals and tax credits and have their own mini power plant; these are definitely things to be excited about. Before installing a solar panel array, it is important to assess the condition of the existing roof the panels are going to be mounted to. By ensuring the integrity of the existing roofing system, you will avoid future problems such as leakage, repair or the need to remove panels to re-roof. Certain types of roofs, such as tile and wood shingle or shake roofs can present challenges to the solar contractor such as cracked tiles or loose shingles. By having your roof inspected and getting the necessary repairs done prior to solar installation, you can ensure that your roof is in proper condition for solar and less likely to cause you problems.
tegrity of the substrate (roofing surface) on your flat or low-pitch roof is through the installation of a coating system. This watertight system ranges in price from roughly $3 to $5 per foot and holds material warranties ranging from five years to the lifetime of the structure. Coating your roof prior to solar installation creates a watertight membrane that will not allow water to penetrate and cause leakage in the future.
I
Standing seam metal For steeper roofing surfaces, Standing Seam Metal is the roof of choice when installing Solar. The seam allows the solar installer to fasten the panels to your roof using a special clip and therefore little to no penetrations into your new roof. The price range is $8 to $10 per foot.
SURFACE SHIELD contact // 396-9599 email // surfaceshield@hawaii.rr.com web // www.surfaceshieldroofing.com Your existing roof ’s warranty is another important factor to consider. Knowing the warranty of an existing roof is vital when deciding to go solar. If the warranty will expire soon or a homeowner has experienced persistent leakage, it is a good idea to install a new roof before making the investment in solar. Removing solar equipment to make repairs to a damaged roof can be quite costly. Therefore, it is important to know
your warranty. What does it cover? When does it expire? With this data, you will be able to make the right decision concerning your home and roof. Here is some information regarding roofing options from coatings to metal that Surface Shield Roofing Company offers. Coating system An inexpensive way to enhance the in-
RE-ROOFING REPAIR INSPECTIONS
Asphalt shingles Asphalt shingles also are a great option. They are cost-effective and have many great warranty options from 20 years to the lifetime of the structure. Pricing for this roofing system ranges from $3.50 to $5.50 per foot. Whichever option you choose, the staff at Surface Shield will help you from start to finish and ensure your roof is in perfect condition for solar installation.

CITY CONSTRUCTION INC.
A variety of building options under one roof I ntegrity earned through quality construction, diligence and life-long fellowships with owners and their construction teams have been the hallmarks of City Construction Inc.’s longevity. Since its inception 34 years ago in March of 1979, City Construction Inc. has had to change itself several times to be in tune with the demands of the economy.
Overall, this fortitude required both flexibility and creativity, which soon developed into the strengths of City Construction Inc.To summarize the company’s history, its founders started as termite repair carpenters. Next, it grew into a subdivision carpentry subcontractor. After proving its competence and quality, City Construction Inc. blossomed into a luxury custom home builder and has completed more than 30 projects on Hawaii Loa Ridge and Waialae Iki V, including several architect’s homes. Then the company took on the identity of a design-build contractor, walking homeowners through steps A to Z. While City Construction Inc. still does design-build projects, it also builds pre-packaged, steel panelized homes. Packaged homes lay claim to lower costs and less material waste, and steel panelized walls feature green building methods, resistance to termites and faster construction time.

Updating windows crucial for Island homes T he most common windows in Hawaii homes today are Jalousies. This trend has been around since the ’50s in Hawaii because the window style suits our year-round beautiful weather and constant trade winds. Only in Hawaii is the weather so great. However, many developments have been made in the window industry around the world and in Hawaii, and there are a number of reasons to upgrade your home with better windows.
Reason No. 1 If you can remember, there was a time in Hawaii not so long ago when we didn’t have to lock our doors or windows. But today the world has changed and home burglaries have become out of control. Locking doors and windows is now mandatory. The real problem is with jalousies: Even when they are closed, there is not much security. Last year the Olomana area of Kailua experienced 60-plus burglaries alone. The main reason was nine out of 10 homes had jalousie windows. They are just too easy to break into. Here’s the solution: Change those old jalousies with Simonton Lifetime windows. Just order our impact-resistance security package and know you have the best security available in Hawaii. Simonton windows are rated No. 1 by J.D. Power and Associates because they are the best in customer satisfaction as well as builder satisfaction. That’s security. Reason No. 2 The trade winds and salt air that come with the trades cause wood rot, paint erosion and damage to drywall products. Nothing is worse than looking at ugly, beat-up windows. And if we really think about it, we live in Hawaii, so we spend a lot of time looking out our windows enjoying the natural island beauty, so it’s preferable not to look at old, shabby windows.
Here’s the solution: Fix those tired old windows with Simonton Lifetime windows. Order our special finish and trim package TROPICAL WHOLESALE and we will fix those windows contact // 263-1252 • 292-2942 and make them look beautiful web // www.twoahu.com forever. With seven different custom patterns and nine decorative finishes, you’ll always enjoy your windows and our beautiful island view. SUMMER Reason No. 3 Homeowners think that the best windows, like Simonton Windows, will cost too much or be too fancy for an older home. Or homeowners hear about friends who have installed windows, but got “a bum job” from a fly-by-night company. Here’s the solution: Call Tropical Wholesale, a local familyowned-and-operated company that has been around for 30 years. When you call Tropical, you won’t get a salesman. You’ll get someone who will treat you like a family member pricing your job. This means no sales commissions, no sales talk, no high pressure or Mainland sales techniques — just local people serving local people giving the best job, products and prices in Hawaii. The company has thousands of customers to prove it. Plus, Tropical is the Hawaii-approved contractor for Costco and Sam’s Club, so members should call and ask about their programs.

ISLAND BATH WORKS
Better solution, far less money or some people, getting into a bathtub can be such a perilous trial that it can result in injury or avoiding the bath. But it doesn’t have to stay that way, thanks to Island Bath Works. Some people simply aren’t agile, sturdy or strong enough to safely step over a typical 14-inch bathtub wall to get into or out of their bathtub. The difficulty might stem from age or injury. It’s even more difficult in tubs with higher walls. One answer is replacing your bathtub with a shower stall, a project that can easily cost $12,000 or more and take a week. Island Bath Works has a better solution, for far less money out of your pocket: a walk-in bathtub conversion. The Honolulu firm will remove a section of the bathtub wall, leaving a curb 4 inches high, while the rest of the tub — and its associated plumbing and wall covering — remains undisturbed. Bathtubs are commonly made of cast iron, fiberglass or steel. Island Bath Works has extensive experience modifying all of them. A portion of the tub wall up to three feet wide is removed. The remaining edges are custom fabricated with an industrial polymer material and color matched, leaving a seamless surface that looks as good as new. Island Bath Works can also refinish the

entire tub if needed. Grab rails and non-skid surfaces can be installed to complete the safety improvements to your bath. Island Bath Works can accomplish all of that for a fraction of the cost of a tub replacement, and complete it a lot quicker. “We want to minimize disruption to the household,” said Eric Thompson, chief executive officer and owner of Island Bath Works.

“Most of our jobs take a single day, and the tub is ready to use the following night.” Thompson, a Kaimuki native, noted that many Island households include several generations of family members. “It is unfortunate that many homeowners only consider a walk-in bathtub conversion after Grandma or Grandpa has an accident,” said Thompson. “Our goal is to help people take the

necessary preventive measure before then.” Elizabeth Wong of Kaneohe said, “Our bathtub was too high and not having handlebars made it easy to slip. After receiving a quote from several places, it was clear that Island Bath Works would provide the highest quality work within a reasonable budget and time frame.” Island Bath Works also offers bathroom refinishing, an option that Wong and her husband James chose. “After doing our bathtub conversion, Eric also refinished our tiles, the bathroom walls as well as the tub itself,” said Wong. “We were both in awe because of how new and luxurious our bathroom looked afterward.” Island Bath Works provides a lifetime warranty on labor and materials and a fiveyear warranty on refinishing. The firm can convert bathtubs not only on Oahu but also the Neighbor Islands. For more, call Island Bath Works at 9279228 or see www.IslandBathWorks.com.

Turn your cluttered garage into a neat storage solution E very time you walk into your garage, do you find yourself asking, “How did this garage get away from me? Are you tired of tripping over that stuff on the garage floor that you’ve been meaning to move as soon as you can find some storage space? If so, Advanced Overhead Storage of Hawaii can help you take that first step by providing the additional storage space you need. Advanced Overhead Storage of Hawaii does one thing, and does it very well. The professionals install heavy-duty storage racks that are fastened to the ceiling, freeing up your limited and valuable floor space. Installations can be done in finished or unfinished ceilings, including concrete. Each installation is custom-designed to fit your storage needs and available space. The distance they are suspended from the ceiling is specifically sized to accommodate your ceiling height and clearance needs. These heavy-duty, industrial-strength steel “SmartRax come in a variety of sizes to accommodate many storage needs. Standard sizes include 2-foot and 4-foot widths, and 4-foot and 8-foot lengths as well as a versatile mobile rack which can be raised and lowered with a hand crank or your cordless power drill. Units can even be hung in layers like shelving. They are powder-coated to inhibit rust and can hold up to 700 pounds of weight.
The most popular 4 foot by 8 foot rack creates 32 square feet of new storage space you didn’t know you had. More often than not, installations end up with multiple units that create even more valuable storage space. Many customers have opted for two 4 foot by 8 foot units and two 2 foot by 8 foot units netting a whopping 96 square feet of previously non-existent storage space in a standard sized two-car garage. These racks can be used to store frequently used items such as spor ts, camping and beach equipment, or longterm storage items such as business supplies, holiday decorations and building supplies. They work exceptionally well with storage tubs and boxes. Advanced Overhead Storage always offers free, noobligation consultations and estimates. The friendly staff will help you design a ceiling-hung storage system you can be proud of. Go with quality, not quantity for solar power T
he best way to explain the quality crisis in solar is this old adage: quality, not quantity. It’s not about the quantity of solar panels installed on a roof that creates the most power, it’s about the quality of the panels. RevoluSun is educating Hawaii about the new SunPower® X-Series Solar Panel (XSeries), the world’s most efficient panel on the market today. Made with third-generation SunPower Maxeon® solar cells, which are built on a solid copper foundation delivering unmatched performance and reliability over the lifetime of the solar energy system, XSeries solar panels deliver 44 percent more power per panel than conventional panels. That means more power is created with fewer panels, thus a smaller footprint. The same size as a standard 240-watt panel, the X-Series produces a mammoth 345 watts in the same footprint — ideal for roofs where space is at a premium or where future expansion might be needed. Also, XSeries panels are designed for demanding conditions such as Hawaii’s salt mist climate, partial shade or hot rooftop temperatures. SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR), a 32 • AUG. 4, 2013
needs to be repaired or replaced, an identical or functionally equivalent panel will be provided or the cost of the panel will be fully refunded. The associated labor and transportation costs for customers whose solar panels were installed by RevoluSun, an authorized SunPower dealer, are covered. The new warranty is also written in plain, simple terms that detail the coverage.
REVOLUSUN contact // 748-8888 web // www.RevoluSun.com global solar energy and technology provider headquartered in San Jose, CA, recently introduced its X-Series solar panels, a new product line for the residential market. The X-Series delivers more energy, higher reliability and superior aesthetics than conventional solar panels. The new world-record efficiency of this product line has received third-party validation by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). “As a SunPower Elite Dealer, we’re honored to be among the first solar companies to offer this ground-breaking technology to homeowners in Hawaii and Massachusetts,” said Eric Carlson, RevoluSun principal. “Customers have already ordered more than
400 of the X-Series panels and RevoluSun project developers will begin installing them in the next few weeks. More power per panel means fewer panels to purchase, a smaller roof footprint, quicker installation time and lower mounting hardware cost. The big picture: X-Series panels will deliver consistent, trouble-free energy over the lifetime of the system.” X-Series panels produce more electricity than conventional panels by producing 75 percent more energy per square foot over the first 25 years. SunPower’s straightforward 25-year product warranty is 15 to 20 years longer than traditional solar warranties. In the unlikely event a solar panel
Expanding to the Empire State RevoluSun has opened a new office in Nyack, N.Y. Led by owners Nicholas Grisanti and George Landi, this is the solar integrator’s fifth office in three states. As the third RevoluSun franchise, the New York office serves homeowners primarily in Rockland, Westchester and Orange counties, a hot market that has more than doubled the amount of solar installed last year. “We’re pleased to expand again, at a time when New York homeowners are just beginning to realize the value of solar energy,” said Todd Georgopapadakos, RevoluSun principal. “New York is a booming solar market and our system will allow our New York par tners to grow quickly to meet the demand.”
