It’s finally the first Saturday of the month. That means the streets of Old Kapaa Town will be brimming with musicians, artisans and foodies as shop owners keep their doors open well into the evening. Every month, shop owners lining a mile-stretch along the Kuhio Highway, host 1st Saturday in Old Kapaa Town. The event, which lasts from 5 to 9 p.m.,
features art, food and shopping. The original Art Walk Event was the rainchild of Anelique Ell & put into creation with the help of a small group of art-related businesses and launched in 2009. “I have been working in the Old Kapaa Town area since 1999 and have always thought it was such a gem of an area — the local mom and pop shops, artist studios and the best island eateries overlooked — passed by tourists and residents heading to Hanalei,” Ell said. In 2011, a solid group of downtown Kapaa businesses joined forces and created the event as we know it now. The art night broadened its reach and invited other businesses and organizations
to join in the fun. The name changed to 1st Saturday in Old Kapaa Town, and a triangle of businesses stretching from “canal to canal” have welcomed the idea of a Saturday event. One of the key components to this event is the strong participation from street vendors and musicians who add a multicultural vibe and a festive atmosphere to every corner of the event, according to Neill Sams of Orchid Alley. “There is always something new to see and experience, walk down another block and you are certain to experience an altogether different set of sights and sounds,” Sams said. There are more than 100 vendors, musicians, restaurants and shops that participate at this event, and the layout of event varies month to month, but you are sure to find skilled crafters, photographers, jewelry makers and food vendors. The event’s mission is simple: Establish Old Kapaa Town as a destination and creating a network of small businesses that support and promote each other as well as community events. In the last few months, a subcommittee of the Kapaa Business Association (the Downtown Kapaa Economic Development and Beautification Committee) has

stepped up to partner with the organizers of 1st Saturday in Old Kapaa Town. The committee, which is comprised completely of downtown Kapaa businesses that are members of the Kapaa Business Association, formed a partnership in order to help support this family-friendly event and see that it is prosperous in the future. Visit www.kbakauai.com for details. So, what types of places should you check out during the next event? Glad you asked. Note: Parking is available at Kapaa Beach Park and the canal near the Kapaa Public Library. Public restrooms are available at Kapaa Beach Park.
