YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

JOIN THE FUN!

The program involves working with children in the recreation environment. You will gain work experience over the summer while building leadership and employment readiness skills in a fun supportive way. A $500 honorarium is awarded per candidate upon successful completion of the program. Deadline for applications is May 2022. YES AWARDS

The District of Oak Bay Young Exceptional Star (Y.E.S) Committee is proud to host the Annual Young Exceptional Star (YES) Awards. These awards recognize the accomplishments of youth from grades six and up in the Oak Bay area. The goal of the awards is to emphasize the positive achievements of Oak Bay’s young people by recognizing those who have distinguished themselves in such areas as volunteerism, arts, citizenship, academics, athletics and/or who have overcome obstacles to achieve their goals. Nominations must be submitted to Caroline Lawrence, Sports Coordinator. YOUTH WEIGHT ROOM ORIENTATION 13–16 YRS

This two hour orientation for youth ages 13-16 years will provide youth with an introduction to safely use the weight room. Etiquette and basic workout parameters will be covered and upon completion of this course, participants will be permitted access to the following weight rooms: Oak Bay Recreation Centre, Esquimalt Recreation Centre, City of Victoria Recreation Centre, Saanich Recreation Centre, and West Shore Recreation Centre. After completing this course, youth can enter the Oak Bay Recreation weight room with a parent present or when an attendant is on duty. Specific rules may apply at different recreation centres.

GETTING THE LEADING EDGE: LEADERS IN TRAINING 13-17 YRS

Thinking about getting your first job? This course will concentrate on basic job preparation skills but also focus on the roles and roles and responsibilities of a Spring Break camp leader. Course outline includes completing your resume and cover letter, as well as learning interview skills, behavior management strategies, lesson planning, and how to work with children. Students will complete the course during the first week of Spring Break Camps. Upon completion of this course, students will have the opportunity to complete 10-15 hours of volunteer work in the second week of Spring Break camps. This is an invaluable opportunity to gain actual work experience to add to your resume!

Neighbourhood Learning Centre - Youth Centre

Mar 21–Mar 25 M–F 1:00–3:30pm $116/5 124288 This fun and interactive Red Cross certification course teaches the basics of child care including: the business of babysitting, caring for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children. You will learn how to create safe environments and how to handle basic first aid situations. The Red Cross manual is included in the course. 100% attendance is required. Pre-requisite: participants must be 11 years old by the first day of the course or completed grade 5.

ELI PASQUALE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS ACADEMY FALL SKILLS - U15 & U18 13–17 YRS

Presented by Eli Pasquale Basketball this team program is focused on developing the skills and physical performance levels required to play basketball effectively. We will incorporate all the basketball skills with conditioning in order to emphasize an overall athletic lifestyle for each participant.

YOUTH BIKE SKILLS COURSE 11–15 YRS

The youth bike skills course teaches traffic safety, cyclist responsibilities, and bike handling skills to develop safe cycling behaviours that make biking fun and safe. Participants will leave the course with the skills to ride to school or around their neighbourhood. The course is delivered in alternating 45-minute segments in-class and on-bike, followed by a guided road ride on quiet roads and pathways where they will practice the learned skills. Please note that participants should already be able to ride independently and continuously on their cycles before the course begins.

A music program, now in its 17th year, which offers a unique chance for students to play in a coached, small ensemble, jazz combo setting, supporting the development of knowledge and skill in improvising, theory and arranging, and playing by ear. Periodic guest lecturers, and public performance opportunities will be arranged throughout the term.
