The Friends of Daly Nature Reserve were delighted with the Council decision on July 23 to select 71 Robertson Street, Gisborne, as the location for the proposed Early Years Hub. The Friends thank everyone who has supported their efforts to retain the reserve in its present state and they look forward to working with Council’s environment team, the Wurundjeri Council and others to preserve and protect the reserve.

The Friends pledge to protect this land in perpetuity for the benefit of current and future generations.

MH17 The horror of the shooting down of Malaysian Flight MH17 has shaken us all. Even by the terrible standards of current conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East and Africa this event stood out for its barbarism. With 38 of the 298 victims Australian citizens or permanent residents, Australian families and their communities have suffered dreadfully and we particularly mourn with those who knew and loved Albert and Marie Rizk of Sunbury and Hans van den Hende and Shaliza Dewa and their three children of Eynesbury.

Last month the Gazette recorded the centenary of the Ross Watt Children’s Hall and this month marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Red Cross in Gisborne. The circumstances of their origins were far different. Gisborne responded to a nationwide call to set up local Red Cross units as Australia joined Britain in going to war in 1914 with the knowledge that this would be a catastrophic conflict that would require the support of every citizen. (See the editorial in the 100 Years Ago column on page 31.)

The Friends of Daly Reserve, with the support of the great majority of the Gisborne community, have fought hard to ensure that the integrity of the reserve is maintained and their efforts must be commended.

Councillor’s Column with Cr John Letchford For all those who live in and enjoy the surreal surrounds that Macedon Ranges provides, there is a consultation process currently being carried out on a policy document called the Local Planning Statement (LPS).

You will have undoubtedly read or heard of calls for submissions on this piece of policy that was formerly known as SPP8. For those who have an interest in town and urban planning the simplest way to describe this policy is: a vision and values statement directing the type and form of development across the shire.

Why is this important? SPP8, developed between 1973 and 1975, is being refreshed, revitalised and placed highly in planning prominence. If you wish to know more there is a link to the MRSC website and I encourage you to take the time to read it.

While LPS has broad brush strokes, the essential component is clause 22.01 of the Planning Scheme. What is the difference? LPS deals with vision and values whereas clause 22.01 is the local planning and application of policy. All sounds theoretical and boring, however once you read it you will know what is at the heart of our planning endeavours.

Rotary members were out and about at the Gisborne Football Netball Club community day on June 28.

Our farming life captured Keen photographers from across the shire recently celebrated the contribution that farming and rural landscapes make to our community by entering the Council’s first agricultural photo competition.

The competition was designed to acknowledge and promote the region’s first Agribusiness Plan and the newly formed Agribusiness Forum, which will be working in partnership with Council to implement the five-year strategy.

Four finalists were selected from the 125 images received and the winning shot was submitted

by Sequoia Weitman who received a $200 local produce hamper. Sequoia’s photo captured farm life in Romsey and will feature in the Agribusiness Forum’s promotional campaign.

The other three finalists were Helen Evans from Gisborne, Maree Cardinale from Romsey and Lisa Kimmorley from Woodend.

All finalists’ photos will be featured in community buildings between now and the end of the year.

This wonderful photo by Helen Evans of Gisborne was a finalist in the council’s farm photo competition.

You will be able to see them at the Gisborne Library July 29 to August 19 and at the Council Gisborne office August 19 to September 9.

Kyneton District Health: Palliative Care Support Footballers volunteer for Gardiner fundraiser Ken and Darren Ponton, the owners of the Gisborne Car Wash and sponsors of the Gisborne Football Netball Club, invited the footballers along to man the car wash on the morning of July 12. As a result of their efforts $650 was raised for the Gardiner Reserve Community Project. This fundraiser took the total funds the club has raised and donated to charities this year to over $4,000. Charities have supported include Gisborne RSL, Gisborne CFA, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House and the Gardiner Reserve Community Project.

Matilda, the Swinburne Avenue Wonder Bear There is someone very special at Swinburne Avenue Kindergarten. She is soft and cuddly, brave and adventurous and she stays somewhere new each week.

Her name is Matilda, and she is Swinburne Avenue Possum’s group teddy bear! Each week, one of the very lucky and hyperexcited students takes Matilda home with them. She shares all their experiences for the week.

Matilda has been bike riding, to the park, to indoor play centres and to the city. She cooks with her friends and has tea parties with their toys.

Matilda loves her new friends nearly as much as they love her. The children have shown amazing strengths of love and caring for Matilda and recognise what an honour it is to have their turn with her. Matilda comes with her own clothes, a basket and a cosy cushion to sleep on, but mostly she gets to cuddle in with her friends at night.

Matilda also comes Matilda was kind enough to take with a journal in which the Cooper to the recent Kinder Disco. children and parents can record photos, words and drawings to capture the memories of the visit. She has become a beloved member of the class, and an incredibly valued part of the curriculum.

Yoga at Gisborne Kinder Gisborne Kindergarten children have been introduced to the body movements and poses involved in Yoga through a parent, Bronwyn. She has shown them actions such as ‘happy cat’, ‘down dog’ and ‘snake’.

Leading environment figure to speak Professor John Thwaites, former deputy premier who now heads the Monash Sustainability Institute and ClimateWorks Australia, will speak at a special Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group event in early August.

Professor Thwaites was Victoria’s first minister for climate change and was responsible for a range of innovative environmental policies.

His topic is ‘Sustainability Under Attack — How Can Communities Respond?’

The president of the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group, Ralf Thesing, said it was a great opportunity for the local community to hear from one of Australia’s leading thinkers and policy makers on the topic of global warming.

The special event will be held on Wednesday August 6 at the Woodend Neighbourhood Hub, 47 Forest Street, Woodend, at 7.30pm.

East Timor Friendship Agreement signed On July 16, Macedon Ranges Shire Council and the Macedon Ranges Friends of East Timor (MRFoET) signed a Friendship Agreement with the Sub-District of Turiscai in East Timor.

The friendship agreement is intended to foster the exchange of ideas, knowledge, skills and resources, and will provide the basis for a long-term relationship between the two regions.

The agreement has three key contributors: the Friends group, who will take the lead in facilitating projects and initiatives from Australia; the Macedon Ranges Shire Council, who will support the activities of the Friends and assist with governance development; and the administrators of the Turiscai Sub District who will help deliver local projects in Turiscai.

The Timorese delegates participated in a twoweek study tour of council and community-managed services and facilities to see what ideas and services might be replicated back in Turiscai.

Kyneton birthing unit holds ‘meet and greet’ Kyneton’s birthing unit is to open its doors on Thursday, August 7, at 7pm to hold a maternity supper meet and greet.

The evening is to give pregnant women a chance to meet their local midwives and to talk about options for care during pregnancy and childbirth.

Kyneton Hospital provides a quiet and safe birthing facility for families from the Macedon Ranges and Hepburn shires and Sunbury.

Helping older people make the most of the digital world The Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre at Gisborne has received a grant of $40,000 to help older residents gain digital literacy skills.

The State Minister for Higher Education and Skills, Nick Wakeling, announced the funding during a visit to MRFEC in Hamilton Street on July 15. The grant will enable 150 seniors to learn or enhance their skills in digital activities such as internet banking, using mobile phones, tablet devices and Skype, Mr Wakeling said.

Local BlazeAid camp closes The Clarkefield BlazeAid camp pulled up stumps on July 25 after five months and the equivalent of almost 2,200 volunteer days helping landowners clear and replace fire damaged fencing. More than 110 properties received assistance through the BlazeAid effort, which saw 100km of fencing cleared and re-erected.

The whole Macedon Ranges community appreciates the wonderful effort of BlazeAid and its volunteers.

q New Gisborne Primary School’s dispute with the State Education Department over facilities for art teaching has escalated with the creation of a petition. q Mount Macedon resident Dominic Romeo will be one of the leaders of a “boot camp” this month to prepare an Aboriginal youth group for an Antarctic expedition with Peter Bland (see page 14). q Gisborne senior citizens celebrated Elsie Olerenshaw’s 100th birthday last month.

Rowland and Elsie’s 80 years of marriage makes them Australia’s longest-married couple. q An attempted break-in to the MYKI machine at Macedon Railway Station in late June resulted in the death of one person when the offenders fled. Fire Relief football match at Romsey

Bullengarook Community Dinner

A community football match held at Romsey Park on July 7 in aid of fire recovery saw a team of 24 volunteers playing against Robert DiPierdomenico joins volunteers and friends after the match.

28 community members from ‘the Rest of the World’ for the locally designed fire recovery trophy, which will go on display at CFA stations around the shire, along with thank you posters made by over 300 primary school children.

The match result was a draw at 5-4 each, but everyone was a winner with celebrity entertainment from Charlie Pickering, Tom Gleeson and Robert DiPierdomenico.

Cyclists campaign to Light Up the Road Bike Safe Macedon Ranges winter visibility campaign asks cyclists to Light Up the Road. The campaign is sponsored

by Gisborne & District Community Bank’s community grant and Macedon Ranges Signs. It was created in response to requests from both cyclists and motorists, following feedback from an online safety survey Bike Safe recently conducted.

Cyclists can increase their visibility by wearing clothing that stands out against the road during the day and by wearing reflective clothing at night.

clearly visible for at least 200 metres are legally required at night and in poor visibility: lights in these conditions significantly increase cyclists’ safety.

Bike Safe also encourages cyclists to use a rear red flashing light day and night. Motorists should expect to see cyclists on any road in our region: they could be in the next roundabout, at the next intersection and around the next bend.

Look for cyclists: their safety depends upon motorists being alert to their presence.

The annual dinner hosted by the Bullengarook CFA to say ‘thank you’ to the people of Bullengarook will be held on Saturday, August 9. Catering will be provided by Colour of Earth led by popular local chef Siggy Thiner.

The SAFARI Club (Social Activities Fun And Respite Integrated) is tailored towards enhancing the lives of people with disabilities and their families.

The program provides our members with the opportunity to engage in social activities, fun and respite in a unified atmosphere while affording families a day of respite.

The SAFARI Club is supported by ongoing volunteers who “find” the time in their busy schedules. There are no limits, restrictions or conditions placed on how many hours, days or months a volunteer can commit to — it is entirely up to every individual. Assisting on one to two outings a year is of tremendous assistance.

Sometimes “finding” the time is the hardest step but the results are most rewarding. No special skills are required. A caring, fun attitude can open the door to a new experience and chapter in your life.

Only four weeks of winter to go and it is always a joy to see the daffodils bloom in the winter garden.

Our members enjoyed the ‘Christmas in July’ lunch with a delicious choice of treats.

Travel broadens the mind and though we can’t travel everywhere, we can share our understanding and knowledge. Each year at CWA we study a country, its people, culture, food and industries.

Our country of study this year is Mongolia.

Christine Caddaye told us of the issues Mongolian mothers and other women deal with in their daily lives and the struggles these women face.

On behalf of all in our group, thank you Chris. Your research gave us all a greater understanding of their lives.

CWA meets again on August 11 at the Masonic Hall, Gisborne at 10am. As always, you are welcome to join us for a cuppa.

Free register helps people to feel safer at home

CWA distributes Pamper Packs to fire victims Pamper packs were prepared and sent off for fire victims during my visit to CWA Head Office, “Umina”, in late June. A big load was brought back to the Riddell CWA branch for local fire victims. Rugs, clothing, toys, baby and toddler wear and school books were also packed for the many charitable groups CWA supports, including Monash Hospital Children’s and Prems' Department, Berry Street Programs for babies and teens, the Asylum Centre, St Martin’s Fitzroy and Anglicare. At this time of year blankets, beanies, and gloves are in big demand by homeless services across the state.

Birthing kits are still being sent to island nations to give a better start to life for babies and to help new mothers. Children’s books are going to the Solomon Islands through “Schools Without Books”.

It is rewarding in itself but the letters of appreciation saying what a difference our help has made shows how valuable these (mostly hand-made) items are to the recipients.

The generosity of unheralded CWA ladies across Victoria deserve a big thank you, although they do not seek praise.

I am especially pleased when I can take goods donated by our Macedon CWA members and other branches in the district to add to the supplies.

If you live alone, are concerned about your personal safety or were to be involved in a personal emergency while you are away from home, the Macedon Ranges Community Register may be able to help.

The Community Register is a free service provided

by Macedon Ranges Shire Council and local police, and is available to older people, those with a disability or those who are frail. It offers a weekly or fortnightly phone call by a trained volunteer.

Members receive an identification card and are encouraged to carry this with them when they leave home. This will help emergency services locate next of kin if the member is involved in an emergency.

Being a member of the register does not guarantee evacuation in an emergency — members need to make their own plans with family, neighbours and friends. However, the register can help by providing resources to members, such as the CFA Fire Ready Kit. Throughout the year, the Community Register circulates a newsletter to members. This provides information about staying safe and comfortable at home.

The CFA also provides replacement smoke detector batteries free of charge to the Community Register for distribution to members on an annual basis.

Computer company sets up community notice board Changes are afoot at The Computer Company. Our exciting new website will soon host a local Community Notice Board.

This is a free service for clubs, charities, churches, schools etc to post a community notice on a website. Instead of sticking your notices on a shop window, you can have it up on the site.

Another significant change is that The Computer Company is now committed to donating up to 10% of its profits to local charities. Our first donation was to the brand new 1st New Gisborne Scouts who meet on Wednesday evenings at the Church of Christ, New Gisborne. The donation to this new troop was to support six cubs going to Cuboree this year at Gilwell Park near Gembrook.

Rotary Club President Phil Yarwood congratulates Mikaela Murray on starting a new Interact Club at Gisborne Secondary College.

Here’s how kids can become responsible community leaders If you’ve ever wondered how youngsters can get involved in and even lead local and overseas community projects, then you’ll probably be interested in the new Interact Club that started at Gisborne Secondary College in June.

Interact is a club for young people ages 12-18 who want to join together to tackle the issues in their community that they care most about. Students in Year 9 at the college have set up their own Interact Club, with 25-30 founding members. Each year, the club will take on an international project as well as a local or school project.

The new Gisborne Secondary Interact Club president, Mikaela Murray, said they were looking at fundraising ideas and planning what projects they would tackle, and welcome other students who want to join.

The club is having its charter night at the Gisborne Golf Club on August 26.

Interact (short for International and Action) is an offshoot of Rotary International that has a membership of more than 250,000 young people in more than 11,000 clubs worldwide. Their aim is to have fun while helping out in local and international communities, learning about other countries, developing leadership skills and making new friends.

The new school-based club is self-governing and will be supported by faculty adviser Heather Dear from GSC and Rotary adviser Patti Yarwood.

Shedmen: We're still here!

Due to some administrative slip-ups we’ve missed a couple of issues lately but fear not dear reader, we’re still here!

We continue to meet every Monday and Thursday morning at the old Court House thanks to the generosity of the Gisborne Historical Society.

The chat and the tea and coffee continue to flow as we discuss the layout of our equipment once our new shed is built. We’ve also been on some interesting visits thanks to the arrangements made by our Tour Director (and Shedman) Doug. More about our travels in coming issues.

One of our final projects from the old shed hasn’t been mentioned yet.

One of our hard-working volunteers, Pat Sutton, celebrated her 90 birthday. We had a cake, card and arrangement of flowers at the shop for her Thursday shift: a great day was had by all.

We would like to thank all our customers for their patronage and loyalty and to wish everybody a warm and safe winter. We will be looking forward to seeing you all and even though it is cold outside, it is lovely and warm in our shop, so come and enjoy.

Pain in your joints may make you want to hold them very still as moving can be painful.

However, not using your joints will, over time, cause the joints’ ligaments and muscles to lose their range of motion and weaken. Muscles may also shorten and tighten up causing you to feel more pain and stiffness and be less able to do the things you want to do.

Exercising in water is a gentle and effective way for people with arthritis, osteoporosis and other musculoskeletal conditions to be physically active and reduce pain. The buoyancy of

the water supports and lessens stress on the joints and helps you move more freely so you can do exercises that would otherwise be painful.

Water may also act as resistance to help build muscle strength. And the warmth of the water helps to relieve stiffness and pain.

The physiotherapists at Macedon Ranges Health run warm water exercise classes at the Gisborne Aquatics Centre five times each week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the middle of the day.

Each class runs for 45 min-

utes and costs just $6 which includes entry to the pool. There is a limit of 12 participants per class.

The classes are suitable for every fitness level and they are held in a friendly and supportive environment that encourages social interaction among participants.

‘Betty’s Boop’ with Betty Doolan Every day we hear of people’s bravery so I would like to tell you about my niece. Jennifer used to compete in triathlons and ran up the stairs of the Rialto Building. Now Jennifer is ill and her hubby, children, family and friends have surrounded her with love and care. Jennifer wears lovely scarves and hats made by her friends. Recently a friend asked Jennifer what she would like – her answer, “Cards, lots of cards.”

I decided that is something I could do, so I bought 20 cards and I will be ever grateful to the wonderful people that wrote on the cards, some with a message, some with a name; they sealed the envelope and I stamped them and posted them. I have bought another 20 cards. Although Jennifer has all this love and care, she alone goes through tests and treatment and to me this is being brave. Jennifer’s life is now with God and her doctors.

I haven’t told you about Jennifer to make you sad. I just wanted to share with you that bravery is all around us.

I can’t tell you about the Masquerade Ball because it hasn’t happened yet. Residents are busy making masks. One resident asked me how will we know each other — I have got a feeling it won’t be hard to guess who I am.

At the moment I am on the trail of the person who put the shredded paper and newspapers on top of the recycle bin, so it could blow all over the garden, I will find you, I am better than Miss Marple.

Sadly Peg our resident doll maker passed away this week. This gifted lady made many beautiful dolls, Peg could make a dozen dolls and paint each face differently. Peg did oil paintings and many of her paintings adorn the walls of The Elms. We are sad Peg has gone, but happy she has been.

Gisborne Bushwalking Club July saw the club walking on the banks of the Barwon River near Geelong, a walk through historic Woodlands opposite Tullamarine Airport and walking the O’Keefe Rail Trail at Bendigo.

We have four walks planned for August: on Wednesday August 6 we will probably walk the rail trail from Lyonville to Trentham and return through the forest, and on Sunday August 10 Nigel is going to set us a challenge, probably in the Lerderderg. On Sunday August 24, we head up to Mt Disappointment and hope that the walk there does not reflect this name.

To help ensure the safety of walkers, we have arranged to refresh our first aid skills with the Red Cross in the evening of Thursday August 28.

Shopping and cooking with our dietitian Macedon Ranges Health's new dietitian, Susan Whitelock, will have two wonderful events up and running in August – Cooking for One or Two and Healthy Supermarket Tours. ● The Cooking for One or Two program will be conducted at the Gisborne Bowls Club on Tuesdays at 11am (starting August 19 and running for six weeks).

This program involves learning how to cook quick, healthy meals, eat on a budget and try new recipes, in addition to having some fun and meeting new people.

The tour is a fun way to learn how to make healthier shopping choices for you and your family. The tour will meet at Foodworks Gisborne at 10am on Tuesday, August 5.

Caring for someone with a mental disability?

PS [Parents and Siblings] My Family Matters is a newly incorporated not-for-profit organisation focused on the needs of those caring for people with a mental disability in the Macedon Ranges.

Our aim is to build a community-based care model of practical and empathetic support for families and carers in our region.

We have three primary objectives: 1. To provide support for parents, siblings and carers of those suffering with mental illness.

2. To provide information and practical help assistance in navigating the complexities of the Mental Health system and accessing available resources.

3. To mobilise the local community to provide practical assistance to families and carers.

We have already established a monthly carer support group. The next one will be on August 19 at 7pm at 31 Saunders Road, New Gisborne. Please contact us if you wish to attend.

We will also be holding a launch function on August 26 when we will announce our plans for the future.

What’s in your diary?

TOWN Club Having difficulty remembering how many calories you consume each day?

Try keeping a record each day and see where the calories are being consumed. A diary makes for accountability and awareness of where those extra calories are Dianne Egan coming from.

Use whatever diary works for you. Try using an app on your phone, ipod or computer, write in a notebook or even on a piece of paper. What matters is that you use it. Write as you go, don’t trust yourself to remember later.

Cook at home. You’ll have more control over what you consume, and you’ll know what the food contains which makes for a more detailed entry in your food diary.

Perhaps you would like to share your ideas and weight loss journey with like-minded people who are interested in their health and wellbeing. Kyneton Antique Fair During the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival, the annual Kyneton Antique Fair will be held at the Kyneton Town Hall over the weekend of September 5-7.

Some help along life's learning journey Morally and socially children learn to develop from what they see and experience around them. There is a wide range of picture books that use simple language and with Natasha Boyd clear, bright pictures to assist with these important skills.

One of the hardest jobs a parent or carer has is to make their child aware of ‘stranger danger’ or inappropriate touching from anyone they know. Naomi Hunter’s A Secret Safe to Tell sensitively tackles this vital issue so that children know their own personal boundaries and, despite pressure from the perpetrator, that they must always share their uncomfortable feelings with those they trust.

Visiting special places like the dentist, doctor, the hospital, going to a party or staying overnight at Gran’s can be explored through Vivian French’s Buttons Family picture book series or Anna Civardi’s mini-sized paperbacks.

Lucy Cousins’ Maisy character is another one that perfectly depicts first experiences for 3+ children as they go camping or visiting the library or cinema.

Film Society to gather amid French umbrellas What really happened to Harry Lime? That’s the question asked by Holly Martins in the 1949 film The Third Man. In Allied-occupied Vienna, he looks for Harry only to find that he had been killed by a speeding car days before Holly’s arrival in the city. When it is suggested to Holly that he leave town, his suspicions are aroused. Splendid performances by Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Orson Welles and Trevor Howard add to the tense atmosphere of this film that was our July feature.

Some 15 years after The Third Man was made, a French musical film called The Umbrellas of Cherbourg — our August screening — lit up the screen.

Directed by Jacques Demy and starring Catherine

Deneuve, the story revolves around Madame Emery and her beautiful 16-year-old daughter who sell umbrellas from their tiny boutique in the coastal town of Cherbourg in Normandy. Of course, there is a hero and he is young and dashing and handsome, but the path to happiness for our lovers is not always smooth. The film’s music was written by Michel Legrand and all the film dialogue is sung.

The Macedon Ranges Film Society meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 7pm in the Woodend Community Centre. Film notes are provided and there is supper kindly supplied by members.

Macedon Ranges Art Group Beginning on Friday August 1st, 23 members of the Macedon Ranges Art Group will be holding a month long exhibition of paintings, ceramics and textile sculptures at the Black Anther Gallery in Woodend.

Entry is free and you are invited to drinks with the artists between 1pm and 4pm on Sunday August 3.

The title and theme of the exhibition is ‘Diversity’, with artworks in all mediums illustrating the range of talents possessed by members. The exhibition is open Thursdays to Sundays from 10am to 4pm and finishes on Thursday, August 28.

With the membership of MRAG doubling over the past few years, we have found it necessary to move our Melbourne Cup weekend art show to a bigger venue for 2014. This year the show will be at the Woodend Community Centre and feature a number of initiatives, including greater interaction between the artists and the viewing public. Further details about this show and upcoming workshops will be published in the September and October issues of the Gazette.

With spring approaching, our thoughts turn towards plein air painting, a time when we can get out into the fresh air and enjoy the great scenery not only in the Macedon Ranges, but also with weekend visits to the many great seaside locations a few hours’ drive away.

Enrol to vote says Member for Macedon According to a recent survey on political engagement, Australians believe in the principles of our democratic system but they are mostly not engaged in politics. Thankfully Joanne this disengagement was not Duncan evident at the recent Q&A style debate at Gisborne U3A. I was fortunate to be part of the panel that discussed “Is the present method of voting for the Australian Senate the best, or even the only way to ensure a fair democratic outcome for the whole community?”

It was a lively and entertaining event, with more than 100 people attending. Questions were put from the audience about the complexity of the Senate ballot paper, where preferences go, how to determine who the candidates are, the general political process and was compulsory voting the best way forward for democracy?

What became evident at the forum, and this has been borne out by surveys, is that while we hold the ideals of the democratic political process in high regard, we have a healthy degree of scepticism for politicians and the major parties!

The U3A group is obviously politically aware but what is of concern is the lack of interest in the political process by young voters. The oldest age group of voting age, those 65+, is about twice as politically active as the youngest age group, those 18-24.

While there are pockets of political activism among this age group, they are strongly values-driven and their attachment is to issues rather than traditional political organisations.

Young Australians are failing to enrol to vote. This is not a new problem, but the gap appears to have widened in recent elections.

In an effort to boost young enrolment the Victorian Electoral Commission is targeting young voters with candidate forums and an online forum for first-time voters to prioritise questions and share their views using social media. RMIT-CFA researchers seek assistance The CFA has asked RMIT University to conduct a small research project on the potential uses of social media to assist the public in fire preparedness and risk reduction.

We would like to explore the question through a focus group and ask people about their preparedness and risk-reduction activities, and the actual and potential role of social media as an additional information tool regarding fire risk reduction.

From outback to icecap Gisborne resident and polar explorer Peter Bland is heading off on another world first.

In 1998 Peter became the first Australian to have adventured to both the North and South Magnetic Poles. Later this year, he and a group of mentors will take eight young indigenous people from the Northern Territory to Antarctica.

Peter was born and bred in Gisborne. He attended New Gisborne Primary School and later Gisborne Secondary College. He was active in local football and scouting and attributes his love for the outdoors and exploration to his country upbringing.

Using the experiences of his polar expeditions, Peter raised more than $14 million for Australian charities and has produced three documentaries, his most recent being turned into an ABC miniseries. His biography, A Step Too Far, became a bestseller.

In recent years he has been running leadership development programs at his farm at New Gisborne.

The year of 1897 was the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria and was celebrated with much enthusiasm throughout the British Empire.

It prompted many Australian local councils to issue commemorative medals.

The medal pictured was issued by the then Shire of Gisborne and named Thomas Ross Watt as Shire President.

He represented the Bullengarook Riding as a councillor for the Shire of Gisborne.

The obverse of the medal, pictured right, shows two busts of Queen Victoria, as a young and older woman. The reverse of the medal has at the centre the Royal Arms with the lion and unicorn supporters and the words: "1897, Shire of Gisborne, Thos. Ross Watt President".

I have no idea how many of these medals were commissioned and awarded within the shire but would be very interested in hearing from anyone who owns one.

Born in Gisborne — at the old hospital — Rhett Aquilina has spent most of his life in Macedon and now Mount Macedon.

He confesses to a fascination with the flora and fauna of the Macedon Ranges and this decided his future.

After leaving school, Rhett saved up some money doing gardening and property maintenance in order to travel to Latin America and several Asian countries for a backpacking adventure.

Upon his return, Rhett focused more and more on trees and their ills, removing the property maintenance and gardening from his regime.

After some years of study, he holds a Level II certificate in arboriculture and is progressing to Level III at Fairfield NMIT. He is committed to work that is affordable and reliable, concentrating on tree removal, pruning and tree health and care. In our local seasons of high

and persistent winds, his services are much in demand to protect against falling trees and branches. Needless to say, autumn and spring are his busy periods.

Rhett developed ‘Tree Legged Men’ as the catchy name for his business.

Originally it was ‘Man’ but the demand for his services grew so that he has had to draw in up to five casuals to help out.

August is National Family History Month.

This event was initiated by the Australasian Federation of Family History Organisations (AFFHO) Lyn Hall in 2006 as a week of activities but this has now expanded to a whole month. It is sponsored

by AFFHO, Ancestry.com, Family Search, My Heritage and the National Archives of Australia.

The Gisborne Genealogical Group will hold a full-day seminar on Saturday August 16 in the meeting room at the Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre in Hamilton Street.

The morning session will be from 10am to noon. There will be refreshments followed by a talk on ‘DNA in Genealogical Research’ by Warren Power. This will be followed by a Q&A session then BYO lunch from noon to 1pm. (Tea and coffee available all day.)

The afternoon session (1pm-3pm) will be a talk by Louise Wilson on ‘Writing Family History Stories'. There will be time again for Q&A before a delicious afternoon tea. Group members free, non-members a gold coin donation please.

We will have volunteers on duty each Thursday afternoon as usual, but during the week Monday August 11 through till Friday August 15, volunteers will be available to help each day between 1pm and 4pm. So whether you are just starting out or have a specific genealogical query, feel free to call in at the Family History Room of the Gisborne Library. For visitors a gold coin donation is requested.

Tips on time management 'Time management' is one of those hyped up phrases that is often associated with being disorganised and out of control; it seems to be the problem of the century.

It can be overwhelming. We live in a society where we are so obsessed with controlling everything that we often ignore an important concept of time, and that is, we can’t manage it —time happens, we can’t stop it nor can we manipulate it. Did you know that we all have 86,400 seconds available to us in a day? OK, now that we have clarified that we can’t stop time, let’s focus on what we can do.

How about managing self? I would like to share some simple steps that you can implement over the next 30 days.

1. Get your mindset right: Before you start your day visualise what you would like it to look like, incorporating all you need to do. Whenever you feel out of control, stressed, overwhelmed, stop and take a step back and ask yourself: “How would I like it to be?”

2. Change your posture: Every time

you feel you are slipping into a negative mindset, change your posture; sit up straight and confidently. This will help change your state of mind and how you feel internally.

3. Create a routine: Be clear on what you want to achieve and what you need to do to get there. Create a weekly table, like a calendar, listing all the things you must do. This will help you to stick to a routine and not get distracted. Make an effort to follow the table and make sure you have some me time in there and make it fun!

4. Create a plan: Set clear goals and break them down into sections so you can achieve them effortlessly. This creates clarity.

5. Focus on the positive: If you think negative thoughts, it is more than likely that these will eventuate. Focus on the positive even though you feel panicky or stressed.

6. Take action: Having a desire alone is not going to give you the results you want. To achieve results you need to take action. You are in control.

HE Gisborne Cricket Club is one of the oldest sporting clubs in Australia, founded in 1858, not long after the township of Gisborne was established.

Early games were played on matting pitches and were “social” games only as there was no suitable competition to play in. Travelling teams from Melbourne and Kyneton also came to play in Gisborne and then enjoyed the hospitality at the local pubs before making the long journey home.

The 'friendlies' did not always go to plan. At a match at Gisborne between Gisborne and Riddells Creek in January 1869, the visitors walked off the ground after a disagreement with the umpire and refused to return.

Chris Humfrey’s visit to Macedon

The school choir travelled north for the Bendigo Eisteddfod at the end of last term. They performed three songs — ‘Yonder Come Day’, ‘Give Me a Kite’ and ‘Bumba Hunting’ — and placed second in the competition.

The administration building and Grade 5/6 classrooms were a hive of activity on the final few days of term and during the holidays, as mountains of furniture had to be temporarily relocated.

Builders replaced flooring, repaired David McCall roofing and upgraded toilets in these areas. A new double portable classroom building also arrived, to accommodate increased enrolments.

While the aforementioned renovations were funded by the State Government, Grade 5/6 students stimulated the school economy with the creation of their small businesses.

Offerings t o staff and students included the current craze of loom bracelets, as well as hacky sacks, scented candles, temporary tattoos, bookmarks, pencil holders, stationery supplies, stress balls, sporting memorabilia, posters, hand-crafted toys, jar-guessing competitions and raffles.

On the final day of Term Two, we farewelled Grade Prep teacher Leisha Jamieson, who is moving to Canberra. In a seamless transition, on the first day of Term Three we welcomed Felicity Purcell to the role.

Chris Humfrey from Wild Action Zoo visited Macedon Primary School on June 3 to help the Grade 5 and 6 students locate animal feeder boxes throughout Middle Gully Reserve as well as the school grounds.

First, Chris showed us some native Australian animals including the squirrel glider, a boobook owl, a kookaburra, a koala and a ring-tail possum. With each animal Chris showed, he talked about how we can help that species survive, how and what it eats and where it lives.

Next, Chris gave some students tags with pictures of animals that live in this area. We then walked around Middle Gully and placed the tags in a suitable place for us to locate the animal boxes that we had previously made.

During this walk, we were lucky enough to see a koala up high in a tree.

After we had finished finding suitable locations in Middle Gully, students who had left-over tags put them up at school.

Macedon Primary goes ‘Mathedon’

Victorious and very happy New Gisborne Primary School football team with proud coach Mr Goodyear.

On the second last week of term the World of Maths Roadshow rolled into Macedon Primary School. Our presenter, Marion, came to our school with fun activities that used volume, weight, area, perimeter and much more.

Activities took place in our school’s fantastic John Curtin building where each task was set up on tables which we rotated around. Marion had a lot of activities. ‘Mos - Ache’ was where you had to make shapes out of triangles like a star, hexagon and an equilateral triangle.

‘Zoo Trip’ challenged us to light up lights to a ◄ Zoe and Sinead work on their powers of estimation!

New Gisborne’s big win On May 23 the New Gisborne Football team went to Gardiner Reserve to compete against five other local school teams. New Gisborne played against three of the teams starting with Mount Macedon Primary School and we had a good win by 35 points.

The second team we played was Holy Cross in our closest game of the day; it was an intense battle for the whole game. They got a few early goals on us but through team work and good play, we got them. In the end it was close — we only won by three points!

The next game was the biggest of the day; it was the grand final against Gisborne Primary School and we knew it would be a good game. As the siren blew, New Gisborne went in hard and got the first goal in

under two minutes and we were off to a good start.

At half time New Gisborne was in front with a big lead. We believed the game was ours.

Our coach and PE teacher, Mr Goodyear, was quite calm before the match and told us to stay calm too so that’s what we did. We didn’t get nervous.

As we were walking back to our positions we all knew that we had to go hard and give every inch of energy and determination that we had.

As the siren blew we won first possession and we were off!

We kicked a few goals in a short amount of time. We needed to be consistent with our game and we won! It was an amazing game. We had won the grand final by 51 points!

We all enjoyed the day and everyone learnt something about volume, numbers, weight, area, perimeter and problem-solving strategies.

Macedon Grammar School news Term three has started really well.

The Year 11 and 12s are off at ski and study camp near Mt Buller, learning to ski and snowboard while also having some study time. The Year 10 students had work experience for the first week of school and really ernjoyed it!

The Parent in Partnership group is hosting the Father’s Day stall at school during this term.

We welcome the new students to our school; we hope they enjoy the wonderful learning opportunities here.

Students have been working hard on this year’s production. Rehearsals are going well and the cast will hit the stage at the Kyneton Town Hall on August 2 and 3.

Careers Chatter

In term two, Gisborne Secondary College students made the trek from the classroom to the McDonald’s in Gisborne with the aim of improving their Indonesian speaking skills.

Year 7 Indonesian students had learnt in class how to greet someone, order a meal, discuss food preferences and exchange money. This language was put into practice at McDonalds (or ‘McDees’ as it is known in Indonesia). Their teacher stood behind the counter and took each student’s order in Indonesian and passed this information on to a helpful McDonald’s staff member.

Students performed their task beautifully and impressed many of the locals with their language skills and polite manners.

Students of course appreciated the food and the chance to use their new skills in a real world Jenny McCarthy setting!

After a much needed holiday break, Term 3 is up and running. The junior school students have begun their new electives for semester 2 and it’s down to business for the senior school as there is virtually no break now until exams.

Aside from academic matters, the sports captains held a general assembly in which they awarded medals to age group champions for all our sporting carnival events. Along with the medals for outstanding sporting achievement, the house winning trophies for swimming, athletics and cross country were awarded. The overall house winner has not yet been decided as points for house debating and other competitive house events have not been announced. We are very proud of our interschool debating team who only have one debate left until the debating season is concluded.

As a leadership team this term we have already begun discussing election processes for the candidates for our school leaders next year.

New building work has just started on our new gymnasium and sporting facilities. This is very promising for our sports pathways in the near future and looks to be running to plan.

There have also been a lot of university representatives coming to school in past weeks to talk to Year 11 and 12 students about universities and the course options they have available. We are rapidly approaching the end of the year and there are mixed emotions among all the Year 12 students, but overall the third term holds promises of excitement and productiveness.

During the school holidays Douglas McCoag on Saint Stifle represented Gisborne Secondary College as part of its equestrian team at the State Interschool Championships in Show Jumping. Doug finished in sixth place, which is an outstanding achievement. The jumps were big and the standard of competition very high. There were 36 competitors in Doug’s age group and jumping height group.

Holy Cross Grade Six pupil Patrick Barham is August’s Young Achiever.

Patrick decided we needed to store our brand new laptops in a safe and tidy way. He suggested a design and set about gathering materials and tools. He built four computer banks to hold the 22 laptops and each of the four 5/6 rooms received one, much to the delight of the teachers.

Patrick used his maths measurement skills and a variety of tools to complete the project.

Red Rock Christian College We have officially passed the shortest day of the year and from here on in, we can look forward to more light and hopefully more sun and warmth!

The students continue to love getting outside, playing in the cold and often the mud as they stretch their legs and “get their sillies out” during lunch and recess.

This term we will initiate some self-development programs with the Year 5 and 6 students. These programs are aimed at helping students identify their strengths and qualities and use these to help them face their challenges both in and out of school.

We will continue with our basketball training on Tuesday mornings before school, which the students have enjoyed and, unbeknown to them, puts them in a great zone for learning.

A committed group of parents and staff have been working at designing a new uniform to clearly identify the students of Red Rock and this should be completed by the end of the term. We tip our hats to those individuals who have worked hard at managing the factors that come with designing a new uniform — style, comfort, durability and ease of cleaning.

This term at our school is production time!

Students are auditioning for roles in the upcoming show and there are roles for all ages. This year’s production is called ‘Making Waves’ and is about keeping our oceans clean.

The production will include people fishing, rainbow fish, seahorses, starfish, jellyfish, sharks, tuna, sardines, whales, a dolphin and octopuses. There will be lots of singing, dancing and acting as the whole school is part of this annual event.

The script and lyrics have been written by exteacher Marillian Jackson and the music by Catherine Hutchison, the parent of a former student.

We are also starting chess club at our school for our forthcoming chess tournament.

This is a club that the grade four, five and sixes can join and compete against each other.

We also have the district athletics coming up on August 13 in Coburg. Our students will try their hardest against the other schools.

On August 29, Rupertswood will celebrate the 140th year since its foundation stone was laid. On that day in 1874, schoolchildren in the area were given a halfday holiday to mark the occasion. Around 1000 people were in attendance.

The foundation stone was a solid piece of bluestone weighing more than three tonnes and on that day a bottle of champagne was broken over the bluestone and officially christened the mansion ‘Rupertswood’.

Underneath this foundation stone was placed a jar containing the Melbourne daily papers, a collection of all the English coins of the day, a biography of the late William John Turner Clarke, and a paper containing all the information of the estate and signed by all the members of the Clarke family.

Rupertswood Mansion was built for WJT Clarke’s son Sir William Clarke at Sunbury from 1874-76. It was one of the largest houses built in Victoria in the 19th century.

pleted in 1876 and described at that time as being in the “Byzantine order of architecture”. A ballroom was added in late 1881 and completed in 1882. The elaborate gates and lodge were built at the same time as the main house.

The gardens and parkland, including the artificial lake, were designed by the leading landscape architect of the time, William Sangster. The lake was originally built in the shape of Australia (minus Tasmania) and covered an area of almost three acres. (This oversight may have irked the first Mr Clarke if he had still been alive since it was in Tasmania that he built the basis of his enormous fortune.)

Sir William Clarke spared no expense on the property. Even a Venetian gondola once floated on the lake’s surface!

Rupertswood was sold in 1925 to Hugh Victor McKay, the inventor of the Sunshine Harvester, then passed in 1927 to the Salesian order to become first a boys’ boarding school and then today’s coeducational Salesian College.

Bring out the clippers, it’s pruning time GARDENING Column with Chris Williams

Hi Everyone, August is upon us and the winter pruning is well under way at Bolobek. It has been a reasonably frost-free season so far, so we have been able to make an early start with rose pruning. There are very many roses in the garden and it takes quite an amount of time to get through them all. It is always rewarding to see the rose garden pruned, tidy and ready for the flowering season ahead.

Four new rose varieties have been selected for planting in the new productive garden. We will have beds of “Apricot Nectar”, “Just Joey”, “Belle du Seigneur” and “Valencia”. These

varieties have been chosen for their disease resistance and perfume; the colours will complement the décor of the house at Bolobek.

The reflection pond at the foot of the poplar walk has been dredged and repaired. It was quite silted and had a leak as well. It is gradually refilling now and soon we will plant water lilies and later in the year some lotus.

Each winter for the past several years, many hundreds of trees have been planted in the farm paddocks and laneways surrounding the garden at Bolobek. These new plantings are very important as they will eventually provide shelter for livestock and significantly decrease the impact of strong winds we experience in the garden. Hundreds of eucalypts, acacias, conifers and oaks have been planted by the owners of the property and most are well established now. In years to come there will be some

grand oak avenues on the farm. It takes great foresight to plant a tiny acorn. It is a very real investment in the future.

August is daffodil time at Bolobek where there is a beautiful daffodil walk under a row of ancient Lindens enclosed by a holly hedge. In this

protected part of the garden there are literally thousands of daffodils of many varieties. The colours are soft pinks, creams, lemon and very few of the more glaringly yellow types that we are all so used to; the effect is soft and feminine. It is a magical spot in late winter.

Happily indoors out of the cold, Garden Club members Margaret Jones and Ivanka Sucher get some tips from specialist bulb grower Gary Reid.

Garden Club heads indoors for July As has been the custom for the past several years, the Gisborne Garden Club organises its July meeting at an indoor venue. This proved to be a particularly good decision after the very cold and blustery weather the day of our June meeting.

There were 44 present at the Masonic Hall in Gisborne for a “soup and sandwiches” lunch which preceded a talk and visual presentation by Gary Reid. Gary and wife Sue are bulb specialists from Yackandandah and they brought with them a large selection of potted bulbs for sale.

To complete the afternoon there was a demonstration of self-watering, low maintenance pots by a retailer, “Green Smart Pots”. These were also available to buy and created quite a great deal of interest. Having come all the way from Drouin for the demonstration, the retailers must have felt very rewarded that quite a number were sold on the day.

The August meeting will be at a private home in Gisborne which is a change of venue from that on the program. Every effort has been made to advise members of the late change. For further information please phone Kerry on 0408 115 759.

Have your say on Macedon and Mount Macedon The views of residents and landowners are wanted on the draft town centre studies for Macedon and Mount Macedon.

Protecting the character and scale of development is important for each of the village centres. The draft studies released by the council present distinct visions for the future of both commercial centres along with a framework plan setting out actions that will inform future use and development.

The studies examine the amount of commercial development required to meet future needs and provide directions for managing bushfire risk.

The Mount Macedon Village Centre Study also examines four potential options for the zoning of the village centre including retaining the current Rural Conservation Zone.

The study explains how the four zoning options may change or constrain the future of the village.

Your views are invited on the studies, including comments on the vision statements, proposed design guidelines and zoning options for Mount Macedon.

Katrina grew up and went to school in Gisborne and she and James have made their home here.

Katrina is the daughter of Glen and Karen Evans of Gisborne. Glen worked for many years at Gisborne Railway Station.

James was originally from Ouyen.

I know the frosty mornings of late do not please all residents (most of those not happy have been holidaying in exotic locations such as Fiji and Vanuatu!), but I personally think Macedon is prettiest during winter when greenery abounds. The very wet conditions this winter have certainly taken their toll on Tony Clarke Reserve, so it’s a relief that junior football has now finished and the ground can start to find its feet for the cricket season.

Good luck to the U16 and U12 Macedon Junior Football Club teams which will see finals action this year. It has been a wonderful season for the club and culminated recently in a hilarious evening of Bogan Bingo as the major fundraiser. Locals were decked out in themed outfits and partook in amusing competitions of air guitar and the other frivolities.

News from Macedon Ranges Shire Council Walking, cycling key to liveability Access to shared trails or joint walking and cycling routes will be the focus of the recently adopted Walking and Cycling Strategy, which aims to promote healthy lifestyles in the shire.

The strategy includes feasibility studies for a Hanging Rock to Woodend shared trail and a Gisborne to Riddells Creek off-road shared trail.

Farmers, wool producers and winemakers were among a crowd of 90 business people who celebrated the future of agribusiness in the Macedon Ranges at a launch of the region’s first Agribusiness Forum on June 26.

$30,000 for youth development Council has obtained $30,000 from the State Government to promote youth engagement and participation in the community. The funds will be used to implement parts of the four-year Youth Strategy, which was adopted last year.

Actions include: ● Development of a Youth Charter to provide ways to include young people in Council decision-making. ● Establishing a group of Youth Ambassadors who will represent young people in the community. ● Development of a DVD promoting youth engagement, with the involvement of the Youth Ambassadors.

The creation of the forum is the first action in the five-year Agribusiness Plan.

It recognises and promotes the industry’s contribution to the local economy and community.

Dying to Talk: a conversation everyone should have A seminar designed to help people start thinking about what matters most to us as we approach the end of life will be held on Friday, August 8.

‘Dying to Talk’, will combine information from experts in death and dying, including palliative care health professionals. It will take place from 9.30am to 12.30pm at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute, Mollison Street, Kyneton.

“The aim is to encourage people to talk about dying, make appropriate plans and share their wishes with others, particularly family,” said Cr John Connor. “We all need to be better informed about end of life and death care options, not just for ourselves but so that we can support others experiencing bereavement.”

Reduced registration fee for adopted dogs and cats Macedon Ranges residents who adopt pets from registered animal shelters in Victoria are now entitled to a reduced initial registration fee of $10 for their first year of registration.

The standard registration fee is $42, so this will result in a saving of $32.

Adopting a pet not only gives the animal a second chance in life, but also gives the owner a long-term companion, which has many health and wellbeing benefits.

Council is seeking community comment on a draft planning statement which will recognise the Macedon Ranges as an area of special significance in statelevel planning policy.

The statement will be available on the website www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/ planning-statement and in Council service centres until August 8.

The final statement with community comments will be considered in September. The statement will form part of Victorian Government policy within the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme and will guide planning decisions.

As with any community, there is a diversity of views, however the overwhelming response has been that our green spaces and natural assets are highly valued by both residents and visitors. Public submissions on the draft planning statement will be accepted until 5pm on Friday August 8. They should be addressed to Sophie Segafredo and sent via email to mrsc@ mrsc.vic.gov.au or by post to PO Box 151, Kyneton, 3444.

Call for health and wellbeing representatives Council is seeking expressions of interest from members of the community to join a new advisory committee to help promote health and wellbeing in the shire. The committee will comprise 12 community representatives and three councillors, and will provide input and advice on a range of programs and services.

Nominees must live or work in the Shire, be actively involved in their community and have a good understanding of local and regional issues.

Council is particularly interested in hearing from people who have knowledge and experience in ageing, disability, youth, families, health, mental health, sustainability and the environment, recreation, education, business and economic development, community development and indigenous communities.

An information evening will be held at 7pm on Wednesday, August 6, at the Gisborne Administration Centre.

‘Compleat Flyfisher’ to speak this month

Gisborne Cricket Club

August will bring our beginners’ fly tying course to an end and see the beginning of “Fly tying techniques” the following month. This will cover different methods of fly tying to cater for all fly types. It is an intermediate fly tying course but is open to any member.

August’s speaker is none other than Andrew Fuller of the Flyfisher, also known as the Compleat Flyfisher.

The Flyfisher caters for beginners to experienced fly fishers so expect Andrew to answer questions on the latest and greatest to modest everyday tackle. Andrew’s presentation will be on Wednesday, August 27 at 8pm at the Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre in Gisborne.

Trout will be feeding hard on smelt (small baitfish) this month so expect plenty of action in our local lakes.

Members who attended John Guljas’ talk will know when, where and what type of fly to target the trout with in August.

Big month ahead for GFNC It has been a hectic month for the Gisborne Football Netball Club with functions and a tight playing schedule keeping all facets of the club busy.

On the field and court, our Senior football and A grade netball teams recovered from mid-season slumps to again challenge the top of the ladder.

In football, strong wins against Kyneton, Maryborough and Castlemaine have them two games clear of fourth after round 12. Our Reserves sit fifth on the ladder, while under 18s continue their strong year at third on the ladder heading into the final six games.

In netball, the reigning A-grade premiers continue to build nicely towards September with a string of highprofile wins. The girls have moved to second on the ladder after a big win against arch-rival Kyneton, and will be eyeing off top spot with wins in

significant games in the run home.

A-Reserve sits fourth, B-grade fifth and under 17s second with only our Breserve girls looking like missing the finals.

We have three remaining home games, taking on Eaglehawk on August 2, Sandhurst on August 9 and Kangaroo Flat on August 26. We would love to see as many people as possible at these games as all our sides head towards finals in September.

Finally, fundraising efforts continue to gain momentum with the Gardiner Reserve Community Project in full swing. If you would like to buy a paver to help raise money for this important project please don’t hesitate to contact Paul Doolan, who is coordinating the project, on 0437 840 989.

Gisborne Cricket Club held its AGM on June 25 at the GISBORNE DRAGONS Victorian Tavern. www.gisbornecc.com A good crowd of members attended to wrap up a successful 2013-2014 season which saw the Dragons win the B Grade premiership in a titanic clash with Diggers Rest. The win enables the c lub to gain promotion to the top level McIntyre Cup competition.

Members were advised at the meeting that the club was in good shape overall, with an excellent junior program, healthy women’s team and very solid financial basis.

The club’s Junior Co-ordinator, Alicia Vernon, was awarded the prestigious “Cliffy Dean” Award for Best Club Person.

The Gisborne Cricket Club is a partner in the Gardiner Reserve Community Project which will provide an excellent boost to the ground and its surrounds. The main improvement from a cricket viewpoint will be the installation of a large LED screen scoreboard which will be a fantastic addition to Gardiner Reserve.

In addition to the financial support provided by council and the state government, the project requires community funding. Works under way World Cup drives at Mt Macedon new interest Members have enjoyed surprisingly benign weather in recent weeks, particularly for Saturday competitions, despite the occasional foreboding prediction.

The course is in marvellous condition with winners posting very respectable scores.

Works continue on the new 9th tee for our par 5.

Volunteers have been building a retaining wall which will quadruple the size of the tee and make it a real feature. Works under way to build second and third tiers on the 10th tee in front of the clubhouse will add another exciting new dimension to golf at Mount Macedon Golf Club.

The keenly contested New Gisborne Electrical Cup, a two-person Stableford aggregate, was won by Rob Devereux and Aaron Edmunds with 76 points. In other notable results Matt Willis won the June monthly medal and John Dawson took out the May medal in a playoff after having tied with Phil Thomas.

What a great time to be involved with soccer (football).

The season is past the halfway mark and after many sleepless nights of the World Cup, Germany finally came out victors. What an amazing competition, with Australia showing that we are catching up with the best in the world.

It was nearly as amazing as the competition we hold at Gisborne, with our youngest teams through to our senior teams showing great development and success. The World Cup has also seen many more people want to try this great sport for themselves with numbers increasing through the season. We allow for additional members when there is room or provide training-only membership where teams are full.

We have increased female membership by 5%, with women now totalling 32% of membership. With two senior women’s teams, a 12 girls team, a 9 girls team and extra girls attending Saturday morning sessions, we plan to expand further next season with more opportunities for girls and women to participate.

We will offer soccer throughout the off season with holiday programs and five a-side competitions.

If you would like to join in, come down to Dixon Field on Saturdays from 10am for 4+ non-competition and for those new to soccer, Thursdays from 5pm for competition players aged 7-12, Thursdays from 5.30pm for 13-16, Thursdays from 6.30pm for seniors.

The son had an Industry Super fund account which I discovered had a linked Death and Disability Benefit. I contacted the super fund and the client’s medical team to complete the required forms to make a claim for his ‘Terminal Illness’.

Within days, the claim was approved and the payment from the super fund was forwarded for $412,000!! Making the phone call to tell him the news was without doubt the most emotional moment of my career.

Since then, he has enjoyed taking the financial stress off his family and can now consider overseas treatment options which were otherwise financially out of reach. Best of all, the tumour at last scan in December has reduced by 75% in size – has removing the financial stress helped??? Who knows?

It was an honour to be able to help him access the funds that may well save his life and to handle the claim process which he and his family had little energy to contend with.

This case reiterates the importance of appropriate insurance and the HUGE difference it can make to a persons’ medical prospects in the event of a serious illness, or for those left behind in the event of death. Sadly these events do happen and we aim to make sure it doesn’t devastate a family or business’ financial situation as well.

Winter golfers go Pink During these cold and wintry months sometimes the last thing you want to do is go out and play golf ... but not the ladies at Gisborne. They are still out and about playing this sometimes glorious and sometimes very frustrating game.

We have just had our annual Pink Breakfast raising money for Peter McCallum Foundation, an event the ladies take part in with great enthusiasm. The winners were Fran Crimmins, A Grade, Margaret Barker, B Grade, and Emma Brown C Grade, and the raffle of a club jumper donated by Pro Matthew Duncan went to Pat Gilchrist. $310 was raised from the raffle.

In other news Anne Allen and Leigh Lindberg won the Doris Chambers event and represented the club at Long Island. Marg Power with partner Peter Buttigieg won the Bert and Doris Storey trophy, while Marg Ivory won the Order of Merit competition.

The L&W Brady Mixed Knockout was recently contested with 19 pairs playing a Canadian Foursomes qualifying round. The winners of the qualifying round were the formidable duo of Kathy Richards and Rob Daly. Seven other pairs joined Kathy and Rob in the next round where the competition changed to Foursomes Matchplay. However, they were upstaged

by Simone and Patrick Morrison who ultimately played new member Sue Baker and Luke Saunders.

A high standard of golf was played, with the match going to the 18th hole where Sue and Luke were victorious. This event is becoming a highlight on the Gisborne Golf Club calendar.

Come spring, Matthew will be holding a few beginners’ courses for those interested in playing golf: keep an eye out on future issues of the Gazette for more details.

The outdoor netball complex at New Gisborne has progressed well and the contractors are now waiting for some warmer, rainfree days to lay the asphalt for the new courts.

The design of the pavilion is expected to be completed within a couple of months, with construction starting later this year. Macedon Ranges Netball Association would like to thank the Gisborne & District Community Bank for its donation. The association is also grateful for the support of government, council and the local community who have rallied together to make our dreams a reality.

Meanwhile, construction of the stadium at Gisborne Secondary College has started. Games will continue to run at the college over the final weeks of the season on a reduced number of courts.

After our recent chilly school holidays, it has been great to see many of our members back on the courts at New Gisborne Tennis Club.

Despite the cold conditions, numbers have increased steadily with youngsters keen to enrol in weekly coaching lessons with our professional club coach, Rob McRae. Many of our junior members are braving the wind and rain to represent our club with much success on Friday nights and Saturday mornings.

Our section 2 Ladies, who play on Tuesdays, are enjoying their tennis and are hopeful of playing finals.

June and July have disappeared in a flurry of cold weather and it is hard to believe that Cold? Me?... Beverley Winnell a new season is only a month away. arrives ready for wintry weather.

Well done to those of you who have managed a few games either at home or away.

We are fielding two pennant teams again this season and competition begins in September. We begin early when we are still feeling cold in order to avoid the hot weather. Victorian Croquet is celebrating its centenary this year, starting in August at Cairnlea.

A few members are going to the official dinner later this month. Vic Croquet is updating the history of this wonderful game and we have contributed our own history – ‘From a dream to a reality’.

The news from our district is good with our club being involved on the district committee once more.

Congratulations to Penny Krstev on accepting the role of president and delegate to VCA. Heather Strano is undertaking the role of alternative delegate. Thanks also to Wendy Black who regularly attends both VCA and NDCA meetings. These efforts are truly appreciated as distances can vary from Maryborough to Maldon, Bendigo and Cairnlea.

Well yet another month has rolled around. Not without significant events though!

We have seen the emergence of a great new talent on the tennis front with the Canberra teenager, Nick Lisa Fowler Kyrgios beating Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon. He later went down in the quarter finals but nonetheless it was an amazing debut on the world stage.

Closer to home our Section 3 ladies team comprising Margi, Jenny, Kay, Wendy and Faye won the grand final. Congratulations girls, you did us all proud.

Our Thursday night comp has started up again for an exciting season. The Juniors have also started after the holiday break.

The Macedon Tennis Club would like to thank the Macedon Ranges Shire Council for the grant we were awarded of approximately $1300 toward our club house refurbishment. The funds are greatly appreciated and will be put to very good use.

Our junior film night was a great success with kids having fun on the tennis court then relaxing to watch a movie on the “big screen” afterwards.

Here are a few tips for those running in winter.

The first thing is please be visible; it’s so hard to see runners, especially as it gets dark so early. The next thing is to stretch and warm up. Our bodies are in hibernation at the moment, so doing these things before a run is essential.

Also, check the tread on your shoes. I nearly fell over on a muddy track today. So plan the route you are going to use as some tracks are no good at this time of year. Oh, and don’t forget to have fun. The feeling you get after a great walk or run is what it is all about.

Ist Gisborne leads the way in rogaining The Victorian Rogaining Association Winter Solstice results are in, and Gisborne Scouts shone again.

The event was held in Linton and the weather though cold was favourable and the rain held off.

There are separate Scout and Venturer trophies and the top Scout team with 800 points were Luke, Christopher, Jacob, Ethan and Casey of 1st Gisborne; second were Sarah, Isaac and Hayley, also from 1st Gisborne, with 530 points.

Thanks to the parents and leaders, Anne and Paul, Adrian and Ron, who supported the team.

The winning team mapped a hard course that saw them covering 21 kilometres in five hours to gain the 800 points.

There was no time for a leisurely stroll through the bush or a relaxing lunch break!

The second team which consisted of younger scouts (aged 11 and 12) training for the event covered 16km in the same time.

Overall placings among all the scout, school and cadet teams had Luke, Christopher, Jacob, Ethan and Casey from 1st Gisborne in fourth place — an excellent effort as the top school teams (Year 10 and

Red Cross celebrates 100 years with a national ‘Aussie barbecue’ Red Cross will host a national Centenary Fundraiser BBQ Day at Bunnings stores around Australia on Saturday August 9 to help raise the vital funds needed for Red Cross to continue its everyday work helping Australians in need.

Members of the Friends of Red Cross Gisborne will be firing up the burners and sizzling sausages at the Sunbury Bunnings Warehouse.

The national barbecue is part of the centenary celebrations of Australian Red Cross, bringing together thousands of Red Cross supporters.

"We are delighted to team up with Bunnings to celebrate 100 years of helping people and we hope the community will come along on the day, have a sausage and learn more about the incredible work of Red Cross in our community and further afield," said member Liz Preston.

"The barbecue is a great way to not only raise much-needed funds but also to build community support and to thank people for their contribution to the first 100 years of Red Cross in Australia.

“Our branch has been actively engaged in the Gisborne community almost continuously since 1914 and we are thrilled to add this milestone event to our list of achievements."

Guides move indoors for winter Guides return for a winter term of indoor activities to keep warm. This includes running games, cooking, making equipment with ropes and having fun with friends.

We will be discussing issues that affect girls and working out how we can best handle them. Girls will continue to work on their Debbie chosen badge challenges.

Fleming This term we also welcome back Michelle from her overseas trip that involved visits to Guide units in Canada, USA and England. The girls will be introduced to new activities observed on her visits.

I have just returned from a two month trip overseas with my husband Leon. We started off in South Africa where we were taken on a wonderful safari at Kruger National Park. We then spent a week in Sussex staying with a nephew. From England we went to Belgium and France where we toured several World War One and World War Two battle fields. We spent about a week in Paris before heading to Barcelona. After Spain we flew to Munich and from there went on an organised tour into the Czech Republic, the Republic of Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland and back to Germany. We left Europe and headed to New York for our final week. We stayed in Harlem which is a very exciting place. Apart from doing the usual tourist things we attended a happy chappy, clappy church service, which is real toe-tapping stuff. In fact Leon said that the drummer would give Ringo Starr a run for his money.

A lady popped into the GREAT Shop and wished to thank “the kind lady who stopped me on the Calder Highway on Thursday last to tell me that there was smoke coming from the engine of my car. She is the only one who bothered about it. All is now well again, but many thanks.”

Margaret Lowman is also very grateful to a good Samaritan. Margaret had a nasty fall at dusk on a bleak July day on the bridge to the Gisborne Botanic Garden and without the help of a lovely gentleman she may have lain there for who knows how long.

Probus members became convicts for a day on Norfolk Island.

Probus group enjoys visit to Norfolk As tourists we experienced a genuine warmth in the welcome from the many locals who were keen to share their island with us — and there is much to share.

The island is a remote volcanic cone — from the sea bed higher than Mt Everest. It supports 1,800 locals, many wandering cows (as they have the right of way on the roads) and a rich diversity of flora and fauna. We were told that if you fished on the reef a catch of one fish every 15 minutes was common. The island also supports a diversity of shopping with many fashionable brands at prices that made the ladies take serious notice.

The island is rich in history. Settled within a year of Australia’s first British settlement, there is much to explore including a cemetery which was established in the 18th century and the remains of the secondary punishment gaol from the 19th century.

South Gisborne resident and Group Leader of 1st Gisborne Scouts, Jayne Guilmartin, has retired from Victoria Police after 37 years but has no time to rest: she has immediately taken up other offers.

Op Shop Jottings

During my absence local man Bill Cartwright spent 10 days very sick in the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Bill is recovering slowly and expects to have a very long recovery period. He told me that he has nothing but praise for the medical staff at the Royal Melbourne Hospital who literally saved his life.

I was in the dry cleaners last week and Matthew Hyde told me his business has received a prestigious award from the Australian Dry Cleaners’ Association in the category of Solutions and Innovation.

A reminder that as a Justice of the Peace, I am available every Tuesday afternoon from 2 to 4pm at the GREAT Centre in Hamilton Street, Gisborne, to witness documents and certify copies. – Carmel

Kate Fitzpatrick collected the ‘Track the Dinosaur’ sheet from the library to amuse her boys during the school holidays. Liam was excited about searching for a dinosaur at the GREAT office but younger brother Aidan was not at all happy about the prospect of finding one.

The Singers in need of more voices The Gisborne Singers are now rehearsing for their next major concert — the ever popular ‘Mozart’s Requiem.’

This will be performed on Sunday November 16 at St Ambrose Church Hall, Woodend, and on Sunday 23 November at Church of Christ, New Gisborne.

The Church has had a busy year so far. At the beginning of the year we held a food nutrition course giving people the opportunity to learn delicious vegetarian recipes. We ran another successful foodhandling course with more planned in coming months.

In May we held our first ‘Concert for a Cancer Cure’ at the Mechanics Institute with local artists and a special guest performance by the Adventist Brass Band. Local businesses donated goods and services and these were auctioned, with all the money raised going to support the Australian Cancer Research Foundation. We would like to thank everyone for their support and look forward to next year’s concert.

We have just finished running a Depression Recovery Program and have just begun a discussion series on “The New World Order” — what is it and what does it mean to us?

The first Thursday of each month at 1pm there is a Vegetarian Recipe Club.

August is a busy month of the year at St Brigid’s. We have baptisms on Sunday 10 at 12 noon, Marriage Sunday on Sunday 17 at 11am and First Eucharist on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24.

Baptisms can and do occur most months of the year and are by appointment. The tradition at St Brigid’s is for the parents with their child or individual to make a commitment to the baptism by attending regular mass. Then the baptism is done with a shorter ceremony to which family and friends are invited. The individual is anointed with the holy water and oil.

The Marriage Sunday is a celebration and a reminder of our commitment to loved ones. We observe and pray for couples everywhere and their relationships with one another.

Those making First Eucharist sacrament, have made a special journey, reached an understanding, made a commitment and will take the communion for the first time. In our Catholic tradition, the children of grades three and four will first make their first Reconciliation.

Usually this occurs earlier in the year and in some places the year before, followed by a commitment mass, and lastly their First Communion which is when the family and friends will also attend.

Gay Wilding We are currently hoping for an October or November moving in day! ● Homelessness is a growing problem in the community and the cold weather is particularly trying for people ‘sleeping rough’. A number of “Ugly Quilts” were delivered recently to the homeless in Melbourne; this will make approximately 50 quilts having been made and distributed over the last two years. Thanks to those women who faithfully assist me in producing these items. Ring me (Gay) if you would like to be involved. ● Young Adults meet fortnightly in Woodend, Youth meet weekly (sometimes twice a week) in Gisborne and surrounds, Small Groups meet fortnightly in varying locations, Prayer Group meets every Monday at 7.30pm at Manaaki, Spirit Shaped Life (ladies’ group) meets fortnightly on Fridays at Church of Christ.

We continue to meet at the Gisborne Church of Christ in Saunders Road, New Gisborne, at 3pm on Sundays. We thank the Church of Christ for the use of their lovely facility.

Gisborne Uniting Church Thank you to all who came to the Choristry Concert in June — it was a lovely afternoon and we were able to send $800 to the Chaplaincy Fund.

The working bee made a big difference to our premises and we are now squeaky clean.

The Friends Group held a Christmas Dinner in July on the 14th. It was good fun with much swapping of presents from under the tree.

Thank you to Janet and D’Arcy for opening up their lovely home for a soup lunch on July 6. Not only was the soup delicious but we all experienced great fellowship.

On October 19 at 2.30pm we are having the Welsh Male Voice Choir at the Church. This is another fund-raiser for the Gisborne Secondary College Chaplaincy. Tickets are $25 or $20 for concessions. Do put the date in your diary — the choir is always very popular.

We are having another Car Boot Sale on October 25. It will be on the land next to the Church. It’s not too early to register an interest by calling Noel on 5428 2624. It is $15 for a pitch.

We have rooms to hire at the Church — a carpeted hall and an adjoining kitchen and a small meeting room. We are opposite the Village Shopping Centre in Brantome Street. For further details please contact Norman on 0408 592 609.

100 Years Ago From the pages of the old Gisborne Gazette August 1914 Death of Mr. James Birss — Although Mr. James Birss had reached the great age of 104 years, his death on Saturday morning last came as a shock. The deceased was quite a celebrity, for much has appeared in the press concerning him. Locally he was a great favourite, especially with the children. He often acted the role of “Father Christmas”, for which part he was typical in appearance. Born in Aberdeen Scotland on the 17th June 1810, he came of a long-lived family, his grandfather reaching 106 years, his father 98, an aunt 102 and he had a sister still living at 97. Over 80 years ago, he settled in Victoria [1841] and for a long time was in the employ of the late Mr. Thomas Watson of Gisborne Mains, and remained in the employ of that family long after Mr. Watson’s death.

Editorial — Europe at War The declaration of war on Russia, and the almost simultaneous invasion of France by Germany, has inaugurated, when the forces engaged are considered, what will probably be the greatest war in the history of the world. When the number of trained soldiers available and the destructive weapons and engines of death that will be used are considered, it will be seen that never, in the history of mankind, was war entered upon on such a gigantic scale as during the past few days.

The Patriotic Fund — An Enthusiastic Meeting — The meeting convened by the shire president, with the object of raising funds in connection with the war, was largely attended and enthusiastic. Dr. Daly said they were all agreed as to the necessity of subscribing to a patriotic fund to assist those dependent on the men who were about to fight for Australia and the Empire. He understood that the fund, started by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for the purpose, had already totalled £43,000. That was very satisfactory but much more was required Red Cross Society — A meeting of the Society, recently formed in Gisborne, was held on Friday night last, there being a fair attendance. It was decided to ask every woman in the district to contribute 6d per week for 6 months to the funds of the Society, also to make up garments, which will be cut out and ready for distribution.

Spraying the Trees — During the week, the work of spraying the street trees to destroy the green oak scale, has been in progress under the management of Mr. D. Stephen, the expert from the Vacuum Oil Company.

The material used is a red oil which is diluted with about 25 parts of water.

Football — The Grand Final match of the season in connection with the Riddell District Football Association was played at Woodend on Saturday — the competing teams being Riddell and Woodend — and a most exciting game resulted, which was witnessed by a large number of spectators. A friendly feeling tempered the spirit of antagonism all round and, although the game was keen and vigorous, it was perfectly clean. Crawford was the central umpire, and was impartial but somewhat undecided for the control of so important a game. Most peculiar is the situation now created by Saturday’s game. Both teams have met each other four times, and there have been two draws and one win each, and by the exact number of points – viz. 5. It is now necessary for a grand grand final to be played on Saturday next.
