GSC opens Performing Arts Centre Gisborne Secondary College students staged Spooktacula: A Creepy Cabaret on November 13 and 14, the show doubling as the official opening of the new Performing Arts Centre for VIP guests and sponsors. The show, which followed a themed supernatural program from zombies, ghosts, vampires and witches to werewolves and angels, starred more than 50 students from

every year level. Producers Natasha Nielson and Narelle Cocks worked on the performance for five months, and had to adapt the show to take into account the much bigger stage space in the new Barcham Theatre.

Student cast and crew were involved in the full range of performance arts as musicians, dancers, singers, actors, makeup, sound and lighting and backstage crew.

Another win for young local tennis star Last month we congratulated Aidan Vaughan on winning the U12 NSW Tennis Championship in September. After that success Aidan won the School Sport Australia National Singles Championships (under 12s) in Hobart in late October. Aidan was part of the Victorian team competing for the State School Tennis titles (Bruce Cup) in which they went down to Queensland after a tightly fought battle in the final.

As we tumble towards Christmas in this busiest of months, there will be opportunities to take a break with the kids at the Gisborne Festival, the Film Night at Gardiner Reserve, the Antique Motorcycle and Car Show and the numerous Christmas Carols events. Student awards The Gazette congratulates all of the terrific school children in the district on completing another year of their studies. We pay a special tribute to those who have been selected by their schools to receive a Gazette Certificate and a cheque for $50 to mark a year of outstanding performance. You can see their happy faces and citations on page 22.

Thank you Karen This edition will have a sad note for many of us as it sees the final column of Karen Visagie’s Parenting Corner. Over the past six years Karen’s insightful and compassionate columns have brought great encouragement to so many in our community who are dealing with the demands of

parenthood amid lives that seem to be busier and busier.

We thank Karen most sincerely for her contribution and look forward to having her involved in the Gazette again when her health is back to its best.

Thank you John We also farewell John Horley, retiring careers officer at Gisborne Secondary College. John's valued columns have helped keep the community in touch with the opportunities available for students of all abilities and interests as they make the choices that will help set their paths in life. His dedication has assisted innumerable young people over the years he has been at GSC. We wish John all the best for the future.

Passing of former distributors The Gazette team were saddened to learn of the recent deaths of our valued former distributor Janet Hall and of Jim Paterson, husband of our distributor Anne Paterson and a former president of the Gisborne Football Club.

Thanks and Christmas greetings As we wind down another year I want to warmly thank all of those who contribute to the continuing success of the Gazette. To all readers of the Gisborne Gazette, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Remember your loved ones over this period as some will be here with you and others far away. Another very important message is to be safe on the roads and in whatever you may be doing over the Christmas period.

Whether you believe in climate change or you don’t, this time of year is hot and getting hotter and with this change in the weather pattern the possibility of a bush fire is quite high. Why I draw these messages to your attention is not for your edification – it is for the children. Roads, swimming pools, bushfires, sunburns and the like are dangers for children as they are the most vulnerable and the most precious. So this summer remember to Slip, Slop, Slap plus the Look and Listen message – sayings that are oldies but goldies – because prevention is better than cure.

Council will prepare its financials very soon in response to the public concern that has been expressed to me about rate capping, so watch this space as I am sure we will have something in the Gazette next year to advise and inform you.

Once again to all readers, be safe, enjoy the festivities but make sure you return in one piece.

Legislation to protect Macedon Ranges on the way Planning Minister Richard Wynne visited Gisborne on November 18 to announce the government would get the ball rolling on legislative protection of the Macedon Ranges before Christmas.

Speaking at a forum of about 130 residents at the Gisborne Golf Club, Mr Wynne said he would appoint an expert committee to guide new planning laws to protect the region from inappropriate

development and to preserve the area’s heritage and environmental values.

Thrilled Community Bank grant recipients gather at the awards night on November 16.

Community Bank grants reach $500,000 Grants and sponsorships totalling a record $150,000 were awarded to 20 groups at Gisborne & District Community Bank® branch of Bendigo Bank's Community Investment Evening on November 16. This brought the branch’s total community investment in the local area to over $500,000 since opening seven years ago.

The largest grant, $63,750, was to Macedon Ranges Health for a new passenger bus fitted with a wheelchair hoist. The bus will be used daily to transport elderly and disabled members of the community to the centre, and for aged-care resident outings. Cleo Olive, pictured, was the first student to complete an ‘Aspire’ project at Gisborne Secondary College. The ‘Aspire’ program comprises a series of challenging tasks; students voluntarily complete a task in their own time, and present their project to a panel.

Cleo delivered a 40-minute presentation on ‘The Amazing Brain’ to a panel which comprised the Principal, Assistant Principal and VCE Psychology teacher. Cleo used presentation software to describe the functions of the cerebral cortex; she provided insights into hemispheric specialisation, specifically researched ‘split-brain’ studies, and finally presented a cogent argument disproving the myth that ‘humans only use 10% of their brain.’

So impressed was the panel that Cleo was chosen as one of the students from the College to represent student views at a recent community forum on the drug ‘Ice’ held in Woodend.

Cleo participated with insight and confidence.

Gisborne Community Carols Come join us at the Gisborne Community Carols on Sunday, December 13. The night will start at 6pm with a sausage sizzle, drinks and music and at 7pm the carols will begin. The venue again will be Gisborne Church of Christ, 31 Saunders Road, New Gisborne.

Members of Gisborne RSL flank the war memorial at the Remembrance Day Service which drew a crowd of more than 60 residents.

RSL thanks supporters The Gisborne/Macedon Ranges Sub-branch wishes to thank all those who supported the RSL by buying poppies at Riddells Creek and Gisborne during the annual Remembrance Day appeal. By your generosity an amount of $3793 was raised.

Richard Peel of Baker’s Delight Gisborne has for many years supported RSL members by giving them a free loaf of bread each day. We wish to express our appreciation to Richard and his friendly staff for this donation, and we are aware of other community organisations he also assists in many ways. Our WW2 veterans are in their 90s and most carry injuries and they appreciate all the support they get.

Community Bank again offers uni scholarship Gisborne & District Community Bank® branch will continue its university scholarship program next year.

The branch will award one local student a scholarship worth $36,000 towards on-campus accommodation and study and associated costs for three years. Applicants must live in the Gisborne district and be first year undergraduate students in 2016 at La Trobe University Bendigo or its Melbourne campus in Bundoora.

Chairman Barry Mullen is delighted to offer the scholarship again. “Our young people are our most valuable asset and we consider this program an important investment in our community’s future,” he said. This will be the third year the bank has offered the scholarship. The bursary was awarded to Gisborne Secondary College student Moyra O’Donoghue in 2014 and to Sacred Heart Kyneton student Jessica Li in 2015.

Record year for Vintage Machinery Society

Service above self

The club has enjoyed another great year with a record number of members.

To cap off the year we have been awarded two generous Machinery Society grants from Western Water and the Gisborne Community Branch of Bendigo Bank, to assist with ongoing projects.

Members still continue to represent the club at various events with their displays throughout Victoria and a large contingent recently ventured to the annual event at Lake Goldsmith.

Our grounds proudly hosted Silvers Circus last month and in December the park will host the second Vintage Motorcycle Show organised by Gisborne Rotary.

The park is in top condition and is a popular spot for walkers. Please exercise caution as we have spotted snakes in both the short and longer grass areas!

Members have enjoyed a variety of guest speakers at our working bee breakfasts held in the clubhouse.

We have had insightful talks on a variety of subjects ranging from how to construct a straw bale house to mental health awareness. These breakfast events will recommence in 2016.

At our recent AGM new committee members and office bearers were elected and we look forward to continuing to develop and grow our club.

On behalf of the club we would like to wish members of the Gisborne and wider community all the compliments of the Season and best wishes for 2016.

This month I want to reflect on a conversation with some people I met recently. While they had heard of Rotary and knew some Rotarians, they didn’t know what it did or stood for.

They asked what the club was about.

Was it an exclusive secret men’s club; is it only old peoBarry Wills ple; is it only for business people? In fact, none of that is true. Rotary’s motto is ‘service above self’. It is worldwide and made up of men and women from all walks of life, of all races and ages, just like you and me, who want to do something of value for others by using their skills and connections for no personal financial reward.

It is non-religious and non-political. Some of the best known global service clubs are Rotary, Lions, Apex, Zonta and Kiwanis. All of these share the same highly honourable values of giving and service above self.

Members are busily carrying out all sorts of projects, big and small, in our community and around the world. There’s nothing better for the soul than doing something good for someone else! So if you want to have fun, form great friendships and learn new things, join a service club – like Rotary. For more information, give me a call on 5428 4483.

Gisborne Library Summer Program Join us for a magical Christmas event at the Gisborne Library on Saturday, December 19. With a Christmas show for kids, scavenger hunt for teenagers, carols with the Young Voices of Macedon and heaps of craft, there is something for everyone.

All through January the Subha Simpson Summer Reading Club will continue, so join up and dive into an exciting world of adventures and mystery through books.

Pass Cyclists with Care campaign The annual Bike Safe “Pass with Care” campaign returns this summer. You will see our trailer out and about and billboards on the roads conveying a simple message that asks motorists to pass cyclists with care.

Before overtaking a cyclist please wait a few seconds until oncoming traffic has passed. If there are no double lines and when safe, move into the next lane and pass as if passing another vehicle. Cyclists ride at about 20 to 30kph, so allow plenty of room when pulling in.

If you drive too close, your vehicle causes a draft which can cause cyclists to crash.

Gisborne CWA On November 9, guest speaker Kate McCormack spoke on children’s welfare through the school system; it was very informative. Also our International Officer Chris Caddaye spoke on education in Cameroon which has been our country of study this year.

Our group has received an invitation from Macedon Ranges Health for morning tea in appreciation of our involvement with the Op Shop which has raised extra funds for their projects.

Our group has had a busy, enjoyable and satisfying year through our fundraising for local community groups as well as craft projects for various groups in the community.

Our last meeting for the year will be on December 7 which will be our Christmas breakup luncheon.

Memorial at Forest Glade A fine sculpture of the owner of Forest Glade at Mount Macedon, Cyril Stokes, with his life-time partner Trevor Bell was unveiled on a glorious spring day in October near the front entrance of the garden.

Cyril records that without Trevor’s tireless help, the restoration of the garden and the collection following the destruction of the Ash Wednesday fires, could not have been achieved.

Trevor died in April 2014.

Henry Howey: behind the monument Part 2

By Ian Boyd Henry Howey and his family reportedly perished when their ship foundered in 1838, and his extensive Gisborne station was sold off. But the tale may not be as simple as first appears. The story continues from November. owey’s will bequeathed his estate to his wife and children but as it was assumed they had all perished, the estate, estimated at £13,000, went to Henry’s brother Captain John Werge Howey. The majority of Howey’s stock and properties in the Gisborne district were bought by John Carre Riddell and Thomas Ferrier Hamilton, settler cousins from Scotland. The family retained most of the city properties.

The white woman of Gippsland

M

any stories circulated among the pioneering settlers of Gippsland regarding a shipwrecked white woman who lived with a group of Lakes Aborigines.

The discovery of the remains of a silk dress and some calico at a disused native camp gave credence to the rumours.

Extensive searches for the woman ended when it was learned from the Aborigines that she had drowned in a river crossing and human remains which appeared not to be Aboriginal were shown as evidence.

The searches for the woman had led to the killing of many Kurnai people by the Border and Native Police in a 31-day campaign in 1846.

It was also discovered that an Aboriginal group had in their possession a carved figurehead which was said to have come from a shipwreck. The figurehead was a roughly carved figure of a woman painted red with white eyes and a bonnet over her red hair. The Port Albert Harbourmaster, Captain Fermaner, identified the figurehead as being from

the “Sarah” – Howey’s brig that was carrying the family and household staff to Victoria from Sydney. If the tale of a white woman is true, it could have been Maria Howey, her governess Miss Gibson or her nurse Elizabeth Howard.

Between 1837 and 1840 five coastal trading ships were lost off the southeast coast of Australia and little if anything was heard of the ships, their cargoes, passengers or crew. The Ships were “Britomart”, “Britannia”, “Sarah”, “Australia” and “Yarra”, most of which were carrying adult female passengers.

An 1843 report that a white woman had been seen with an Aboriginal group revived interest, as it was supposed that the woman was one of the passengers of the “Sarah”, and parties of horsemen went out to search for her. Many years later, near the beach on Woodside Station, a tree carved with letters “H H” was cut down and taken to Melbourne for discussion.

The following are further stories of the white woman in currency in the 1840s.

ettler John Rhodes Wilkinson was expanding his land holdings near Lake Wellington and in driving off the Aborigines, captured a boy of eight or nine who used the name Taka-war-ren.

The boy said he knew the Lohan-tuka, as the Kurnai called the white woman.

The older of her two children was named Filong and was five or six years old. Taka said that three white women were taken to the native camp and lived with the Kurnai in different parts of Gippsland.

Angus McMillan wrote in October 1840 that, at a native camp on the Glengarry (Latrobe) River he found a dead white child about eight months old and saw a white woman with several Aborigines.

A medical practitioner, Dr Arbuckle, confirmed that the body was born to a European parent. Angus McMillan wrote on a piece of paper the location of his station and left it with a pencil in the hope that the woman would find it and make herself known to him. It was later learned that the woman had in fact found the note and was about to reply when her captor

stole the woman for himself. The boy reportedly said that long ago, a great many Aborigines were on the beach when 'Big One canoe carrying big sail' ran in a saucy sea. Holding up eight fingers he showed how many white men and women came ashore. The boy did not tell what happened to the men but it was assumed that they had been speared. The surviving woman was assigned to the chief and had a child soon after her arrival among them. She was a tall woman and had five children of whom three had died. The boy, Taka, reportedly recollected having spoken to the woman and having played with her children. One day she was discovered reading a large book which was snatched from her and thrown into the fire. Some time later, a black man was captured and in conversation with the boy, he indicated that the searchers had been in the very place that the white woman had been the day before. The expedition leaders wanted to continue the search, but the black police refused to stir an inch further as they had no provisions.

Following the disbandment of the expedition, news reached Melbourne that a native trooper had found the bodies of a white woman and child on the banks of a lake near Jemmy’s Point.

An enquiry was held by Mr McMillan and the bodies were interred on November 1, 1847, but no effort was made to establish the identity of the woman. It was later learned that following the arrest of Bunjilee-nee, the woman was passed to his brother but when a stronger man took her, the brother out of vengeance killed both the mother and her child.

The ill-success of the expedition was attributed to lack of equipment and a designated leader for the party.

A subsequent search party scattered knives, looking glasses and tomahawks engraved with the words “White woman, a government party is in search of you. Be careful of your safety but do everything in your power to throw yourself into the hands of Warrigals named Boondowal and Kerrowutbeet. If your captors give you up peaceably they will be rewarded but if not they will be severely punished."

Bunjil-ee-nee snatched it away saying that she wanted to “yabba yabba to white fellow”. He bound her legs to prevent her from escaping. She was described as having being scarred like a black woman.

An Aboriginal boy living with Europeans in Gippsland described a white woman and several children she bore to an Aboriginal chief. The boy pointed out the place where he had played with the mixed-race children. He said that the woman was kept hidden when white men were in the vicinity. The boy stated that some time before, the white woman had come from a shipwreck.

Christian de Villiers, as leader of a private search party, learned that two white women and five men had survived a shipwreck and been found by a group from the Gippsland Lakes. One woman was abducted from the group but she was later killed and the five white men were speared. The surviving white woman was consigned to one of the tribesmen who died soon after and the woman became a chattel of an Aborigine named Batke.

At an Aboriginal camp, a pair of prunella shoes, a child’s dress, some sandy human hair and parts of a brass sextant and quadrant were also found.

It is always sad when a staff member leaves and Kay, who had worked for 16 years with the Life Enhancement Program (LEP), has recently left.

Kay was renowned for her love of animals but this lady could turn her hand to anything: driving the bus, taking folk to the Horticulture meetings, chair aerobics, dressing up and lots more. Residents thank Kay for all the work she has done for us and we wish her the best of luck for the future.

Lots has been happening at the Elms: the Colour Run was a success, Halloween was scary, Melbourne Cup was another success story and many of our staff wore pretty little hats.

On a more serious note, we had Remembrance Day in the LEP room. The room was decorated with a large Australian flag and lots of red poppies and beautiful books showing photos of our soldiers – just looking at these books makes you feel so proud to be Australian.

With the theme “You are never too old to learn”, while doing chair aerobics residents learnt to count to ten in French and Italian – of course if we go to either country I hope numbers can be casually brought into a conversation.

If I was asked to name the creek that runs through the town I would have to call it the “Friendly Creek”.

When walking through the park it is nice to have a chat and make friends with other walkers along with their little and big dogs.

It seems the time of the year has come for me to thank all the wonderful staff and friends who help to make the residents feel happy and safe. A special thanks to Brian, a resident who has brought colour and lovely plants into our gardens.

Gisborne Oaks Sunday Market The new MRH bus will transport elderly and disabled residents daily.

Bank donates bus to MRH Macedon Ranges Health was delighted to receive the keys to a brand new Toyota Commuter bus generously donated by The Gisborne & District Community Bank® Branch of Bendigo Bank at the Bendigo Bank’s Spring Community Investment Event in New Gisborne on November 16.

The bus will be used to provide much needed transport to people in Macedon Ranges Health’s residential aged care facility “The Gisborne Oaks” and for the community Lifestyle Enhancement Programs.

“The Gisborne & District Community Bank® Branch of Bendigo Bank is delighted to have funded a new bus for MRH”, said Graham Stewart a local Director. “Community Bank ® branches re-invest a large portion of their profits back into their local community, and profits generated by local customers will directly benefit a wide spread of the Gisborne and district population. Farewell from the Shed – but just to this year What a year we’ve had!

It started with us still operating out of the old Gisborne Court House while developing the plans for our new shed, and it ends with us being comfortably settled in and working away on our many projects.

Pictured at right is Gisborne’s newest letterbox, located in the LEP (Life Enhancement Program) room at The Oaks to enable all residents to easily send letters to friends and family. It is cleared daily by staff.

As a Shed we’ve met some challenges and end the year in pretty good shape.

This month some of us went to the Tongala Shed for the launch of a book by Barry Golding, The Men’s

Shed Movement. We were reminded that our core existence is to provide Shedmen somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to. We reckon we’ve got that nailed.

Thanks to everyone at Macedon Ranges Health for providing our Shed building and making us feel a valued part of the team.

Dog lovers unite at film society Who in the MRFS audience in November recognised their own behaviour up there on screen at the showing of Best in Show, a 2001 film from director Christopher Guest? From the discreet chuckles to the outright guffaws, it would seem that some recognition was going on.

This delightful mockumentary shows a group of disparate and eccentric characters travelling to Philadelphia for the coveted trophy in the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show. In the end, we were all asking ourselves the same question: whose behaviour was worse – the dogs’ or the humans'? There was a great deal to discuss over the delicious Christmas supper supplied by members.

The Macedon Ranges Film Society has enjoyed another successful year and the audience now looks forward to the playlist for 2016. The club meets on the second Wednesday evening of every month in Woodend and the audience receives film notes, has access to a significant DVD library and, after each film, enjoys supper and discussion of the film, or a discussion of whatever takes their fancy.

Quilters unveil some of their quilts made from men's shirts at the Halloween meeting.

An occasion for Quilters' treats Halloween was a fitting occasion for the Gisborne Quilters and friends to celebrate the unveiling of their recent quilt challenges.

Eighteen quilts in various stages of completion and based on two challenges were unveiled. The first was to make a quilt from men’s shirts, the second to create a quilt based on a pattern in a book by quilt designer Kaffe Fasset.

The fun in completing such a challenge lies not only in having a beautiful quilt, but also in the fact that no two quilts are the same, despite similar instructions and materials. The quilts ranged in colour and technique used and reflected the talents

of the individual crafter. They can be seen on the Gisborne Quilters blog (http:// gisbornequilters.blogspot.com.au/).

The Gisborne Quilters have completed several challenges over the seven years they have come together as a friendship group and their creativity knows no bounds.

The Quilters welcome anybody to their group who wishes to quilt, stitch, knit or crochet. They meet on Wednesday evenings at 7pm in the offices of the Maternal & Child Health Centre near the library. Come along if you want to be inspired, laugh and learn.

by ADFAS members. A visit to Ballarat Art Gallery in October to see the Archibald Prize finalists was followed by a tour of the Melbourne Arts Precinct in November. Resonance String Orchestra’s Senior Strings and staff will join forces with the Castlemaine Chamber Players to present a special Summer Recital on December 5.

Resonance String Orchestra has had a thrilling year and in 2016, Resonance is set to explore new territory with an exciting collaborative project with the captivating Travel Art Dance Company.

Resonance has enjoyed an injection of new blood this year with a number of accomplished adult amateur players joining the ranks and we have welcomed a new cohort of talented young students into the main orchestra. Resonance is still accepting members into both ensembles.

final engagement for the year, will feature works by Britten and Corelli and a number of soloists from the Senior Strings Ensemble.

The ’Rook Revisited with Shirley McKeown Every so often in the mail I receive a surprise letter from someone looking for help in researching their family in the lost archives of Bullengarook’s history. This was the case recently when I received a lovely letter from a member of the Caspar family. This lady is the daughter of Lillian Caspar (1888- 1956) and in turn is the granddaughter of Francis Charles Caspar and Mary Louise Ernestine Meier.

Francis Charles Caspar was born in 1848 in Switzerland and in 1859 arrived in Australia on the “Prince of the Seas”. Francis and Mary were married at East Trentham in 1873. When Francis was naturalised in 1882, he was listed as a saw mill proprietor and farmer. Following through the Post Office records we find Francis living at Bullengarook East from 1901 through until about 1919, when he ceased to be listed.

Francis Caspar’s land and sawmill was out through Fingerpost Road and in those days was quite remote; however the sawmill employed quite a few people and many of the men brought their families out to live near their work.

Francis Caspar was instrumental in getting what was known as ‘The Forest School’ up and running. I have a copy of a letter sent to The Secretary Education Department Melbourne, dated May 1889 in which there is an application for an uncertified school teacher at the 'Mills' school. It is stated that there are 14 school age children there, however they can guarantee an attendance of eight permanent students.

Francis also states that the building for the school will be ‘put in proper order’.

Although there were other sawmills in this area it would seem that Caspar’s was the largest and most successful.

Francis and Mary had eight children but the lifespan of five children was extremely short.

Lillian, the last born to Mary, was only about two years old when her mother died in 1890.

Francis remarried in 1893, to Christina (Ada) Boyce. Ada had been a teacher at the Forest School from 1891 to 1893. She bore Francis a further three children who it would seem lived reasonably long lives.

Francis Charles Caspar died in 1922 at Oakleigh in Melbourne.

Facts for this article have been obtained from family members and research into Bullengarook’s schools.

Last week to see Waiting in the Wings The Mount Players are currently presenting the Noel Coward comedy/drama Waiting in the Wings, directed by Cherry Servis.

Set in 1958 in ‘The Wings Charity Home for Retired Actresses’ just outside of London, this charming play covers a year in the lives of the residents, who find they still have a lot of living and learning to do while trying to see out their days in respectable contentment.

Central to the tale are Lotta Bainbridge and May Davenport, two elegant ladies who have a deep long-time personal feud and find themselves facing the rest of their lives under the same roof.

Coward’s penultimate play is full of wit and sharply drawn characters. A standout is a particularly hilarious turn by Margaret Muehlheim as the dotty Sarita Myrtle, who has an unfortunate obsession with matches. Wearing another hat, Margaret also created the set’s impressive artwork.

Waiting in the Wings closes Saturday 5 December.

New accreditation system and technology combat rising skin cancer Two out of three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. The frequency of melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer – has increased dramatically in recent decades.

More than 2000 Australians are projected to die from skin cancer by the end of this year, with melanoma causing about three-quarters of those deaths, said Dr Peter Dawkins, from Ranges Medical in New Gisborne, who holds a Diploma in Skin Cancer Medicine.

"But better doctor training, new technology and good habits should reduce this frightening number in the future," he said. "Ask if your GP is accredited by the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. This new accreditation system tells patients whether their doctor has proven skills and knowledge in the diagnosis and management of skin cancer."

Dr Dawkins is accredited. Ranges Medical uses a MoleMax scanner for mole mapping and monitoring. This technology is not available anywhere else in the Macedon Ranges. The MoleMax allows highly magnified inspection of skin lesions.

It stores a detailed body map with the high-resolution images of the lesions, making it easier to spot any critical changes.

"Get regular skin checks: early detection and treatment increases your chance of survival and reduces pain and scarring," Dr Dawkins said.

Be a festive season survivor this year As Christmas approaches we are tempted by too much drinking and eating, as we have lots of opportunities to indulge in chocolate, treats and drinks at our various end of year celebrations.

Research has shown that the festive season accounts for 51% of annual weight gain and unfortunately this is weight not Di Egan often lost. We are not probably going to lose weight, so let’s make it time to maintain rather than put on. Exercise restraint but still enjoy yourself by choosing foods from the bottom of the healthy eating pyramid e.g. dips and quiches, and limit your alcohol by making each alternate drink soda water or diet drinks.

Breathtaking performance from joint chorale REVIEW: The Gisborne Singers and Ballarat Chorale at Woodend, November 22. Four songs by Rutter and Karl Jenkin’s The Armed Man (Mass For Peace) Jenkins’ Mass for Peace is a musical representation of war and its aftermath.

It critiques the physical horrors but also the politics – the incitement to conflict. At its zenith it is breathtaking and terrifying.

Consider the Sanctus, in which militaristic brass and drums drown out

the hopeful voices of humanity. Charge! is an incitement to attack, ending in chilling screams and a rendition of The Last Post. Even the horrible fate of animals burnt alive is acknowledged via a Hindu text set to Torches (‘They breathed their last as living torches.’)

But the Mass also offers a beautiful balm in the restful Agnus Dei, the desperately sad, Now the Guns Have Stopped, and the lonely, defiant, Benedictus.

The power of the choirs’ delivery,

Holy Cross reflects on big year As the year draws quickly to a close and we prepare to farewell our grade 6s, it is also important to take time to celebrate the achievements of the year.

There have been many personal achievements and lots of those have been acknowledged at school assemblies with parents, teachers and peers feeling very proud of individual efforts.

2015 has also been a year of big achievements and after years of planning our excited principal can move on with our master plan after drainage works were completed. (Not many people get excited over drainage but this has been a major issue at the school and we don’t need gumboots in the playground any more!)

We saw 18 months of planning and hard work come together with our school mural. We have a talented art teacher who, with her special group of volunteers, showcased the children’s precious work that will be admired for years to come.

It has been an exciting year with big events including our first ever Car Raffle that enabled us to put in a new playground! The children were running as they got off the bus on the first day of this term to see the new addition. Our new families for 2016 were also able to enjoy the new surroundings at our opening barbecue this term. It was lovely to see the new Preps enjoy the playground with their families.

We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and look forward to more exciting events next year!

Young people reflect on Remembrance Day

An Apple for teacher ... and students too Gisborne Primary School Grade 5/6 children for next year are eagerly anticipating the school’s introduction of iPads as the main one-on-one electronic learning device in the senior school. The start of the 2016 school year will occur precisely six years since Apple’s revolutionary tablet was first announced, back when those soon-to-be Grade Sixes were taking their first tentative steps in Grade Prep – confirming the speed at which this technological masterpiece has become central to our lives. Students in younger year levels will continue to use netbooks that have been in existence for just a little bit longer.

Recent community support of our school has included line repainting of game and sporting areas by Ryan Izzard, plus Grade 1/2 Physical Education guest appearances from Steve van Emmerik (Gisborne Little Athletics) and Jessica Yeend (Carmel Amelia School of Dance). Meanwhile, a big thanks goes out to the parents and families of our students, who volunteer and assist our school in so many different ways.

Jack: “I’ve come to realise that the older people I see down the street were once my age, being shipped off to war. I am very grateful for their sacrifice.”

Daniel: “I’m proud of older Australians, as I realise what they have given up for us.”

Laura: “The ceremony was very moving. I’m proud to have laid a wreath.”

Andrew: “I’m proud to be school captain and represent our school on such an important day.”

Shannon D: “During the minute’s silence, I felt very sad for all of the young men and women who have lost their lives and wish we could find an end to wars.”

A wonderful year at St Brigid’s

One of the quieter activities enjoyed on the camp.

Excitement greets New Gisborne camp There was a lot of excitement about New Gisborne Primary School’s Grade 2 camp. We set off first thing Monday morning to the sound of fun and laughter on the bus. We were headed to the Lady Northcote Camp in Bacchus Marsh for two action-packed days. The students were extremely engaged in all the activities which ranged from a flying fox, hut building, archery, giant swing and yabbying. They were even able to con a couple of teachers to ride the flying fox and giant swing, much to the teachers’ horror.

Sitting around the campfire on the first night while sharing songs and jokes was thrilling. Possum spotting proved quite a challenge, but one group managed to catch a glimpse of one of those cute little critters. The students found sleeping in a dormitory a great experience and listening to snoring teachers was even better!

We finally returned home exhausted but exhilarated and keen to do it all again!

We have had a wonderful year of learning and fun at St Brigid’s, and an even better end to term four.

The Year 6s visited Holy Cross Primary School for a Miki, school day to learn all about life at reporter secondary school, and later got to experience it for themselves as they began the transition program which consists of moving around the school to different classes and developing organisational skills to prepare for Year 7.

The juniors enjoyed an excursion to three farms to learn about how farms meet our needs, where our food comes from and some of the processes food goes through.

Several students held fundraisers to support various organisations to buy tents for homeless families and to raise money for the Alopecia Foundation.

The whole school participated in a twokilometre fun run at Dixon Field. Students aimed to raise $22 of sponsorship money each to reach a total of $3500 to buy new sports equipment.

To conclude the year in style, students have been workshopping with Sam Menzies (singer-songwriter, performer, choir leader, dance meditation facilitator, music educator) and rehearsing their songs with their homeroom teachers to prepare for the St Brigid’s Concert of 2015.

I have enjoyed sharing our experiences at St Brigid’s this year and wish everyone a Miki Merry Christmas.

Project activities popular at Gisborne Secondary As part of GSC’s new Year 7 Project course, all students participated in a variety of activities based around the principles of self, others and environment.

Students learnt about animal adaptations, team work and leadership and outdoor pursuits.

Highlights were making hot chocolate with the camp stoves, tying the monkey fist knot, cycling skills and climbing the rock wall. Students are looking forward to learning about sustainability and human impacts over the coming weeks.

News from Mt Macedon Primary The Grade 6 exhibition was amazing! We had a session in the day and a session at night.

All the groups were so busy working and consulting with all their peers and parents. Lots of people were surprised with how much work we have done.

This year the grades 4, 5 and 6 will be participating in the Williamstown Bike Ride. We will enjoy the ride to Williamstown from Maribyrnong and get to have pizza halfway along.

As usual our school will be taking part in the local Christmas Carols and will also be holding our own Church Service.

The Arts Centre renovations are almost finished! By the time you read this it might be finished and we will have a proper school Arts Centre.

Farewell from a dedicated educator It is with a mix of feelings that Career I write my last Chatter column for with John Horley the Gisborne Gazette. I am finishing my time at Gisborne Secondary College this year after 10 years. It’s time to reflect a little on the changes I have seen.

Probably the biggest is the continuing growing awareness of GSC, students, families and the broader Macedon Ranges community of the critical role that good subject choices throughout school plays in assisting young people along the pathways to achieving their career aspirations. For every student this pathway is different. The Macedon Ranges community can take great comfort and security knowing that GSC is a school that consistently demonstrates and is recognised for its approach and commitment to young people’s futures.

The release of ATAR scores this month gives our VCE students the chance to revisit their 2016 VTAC applications. Both Ms Huke and myself are available to talk with students and their families at this time.

Finally, thank you to the many, many families that I have had the pleasure to get to know and work with over the last 10 years. I take away wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.

On October 30 we had our second Wellbeing Day this year.

We had lots of great activities like Body Balance, Orienteering and Cooking.

In the second and third weeks of term we had our intensive swimming program.

We all learnt lots and our school is now considerably more water safe.

Montessori Cycle one (Preschool and Prep) students discuss Diwali and Rangoli.

This month we learned about “Diwali” – the Festival of Lights – one of the largest and brightest Hindu festivals. The main festival coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu Lunisolar month “Kartika”.

Students displayed “Rangoli” (floor art thought to bring good luck) using flower petals, and cooked an Indian lunch for everyone to share at school.

Cycle 2 and 3 (Grades 1 to 6) had an amazing time at school camp at Campaspe Downs. Camp was three days of pure adrenalin adventure challenges, including giant

swing, archery, flying fox, low ropes, raft building, canoeing and abseiling. Confidence and pride skyrocketed as students realised what they had just done, what fear they had conquered and how much fun that was.

Camp staff were particularly impressed with our students, especially the way they supported and encouraged one another and cared for friends who were scared to attempt some of the activities. They were so impressed that they have since visited the school just to see how we work.

Up, up and away! Bullengarook at the coast Year 12 students from Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School travelled to the Gold Coast in Queensland as the culmination of months of planning and preparation.

Students studying VCAL at Foundation level completed all of the planning and preparation for this trip as the main focus for their learning this year.

Students booked accommodation and flights, using a budget they had earned by running the school canteen the year before.

Caitlin Thomas Caitlin is a Grade 6 student. She began at Holy Cross in 2015 and immediately made an impact in her new school environment.

She established friendships quickly due to her warm and encouraging nature. Caitlin was nominated as an SRC Rep and she excelled in the role.

She has a passion for learning and an aptitude for presenting her learning using multimedia. She extended this creativity while participating in the school’s photography club.

Antony El Hitti Antony is an active participant in class discussions and applies himself to all learning tasks with excellent concentration, producing admirable academic results. He demonstrates leadership skills, initiative and organisation. He has strong written and verbal skills and he shows a passion for maths. Antony has a positive rapport with people of all ages. He shares his academic ability through peer-tutoring classmates who may be struggling in different subject areas.

Matt Spargo Sarah Edward Sarah Edward and Matt Spargo have added significantly to the status around the role of College Captains. They are exemplary students, high achievers and great role models. Finbar is a talented and popular member of the school community. He has a fantastic sense of humour and gets into the spirit of all activities he is involved in. Finbar has overcome some significant health issues and done it all with a smile and an amazing degree of determination.

Emma is an excellent role model. She works extremely hard on classroom and homework tasks.

The presentation of her work is outstanding and she goes above and beyond the required task. She is an inquisitive student who asks interesting questions to improve her learning. Emma is an outstanding writer who uses very descriptive language and ideas well beyond her years. She is a very likeable class mate and takes on an informal leadership role. Danell makes a great contribution to our school community and is a very enthusiastic young lady. She is keen to volunteer for jobs and has put her name forward to be in the Live4life crew in 2016. She works extremely hard in the horticulture program and is a great role model for our younger students with her behaviour both in and out of the classroom. Danell is clearly a student leader in the making.

Connor is a caring and respectful class member who achieves excellent results in all curriculum areas. He focuses on his learning at all times and strives for personal success. He is considerate towards his classmates, showing compassion and equality for everyone.

Bill He Bill is an excellent student who excels academically. He works very hard at his school work and is also involved in both sport and language classes outside of school hours.

Easy-care spring flowering shrub Hi Everyone, In my garden, Shepherd’s Bush at Mt Macedon, I have a few specimens of the spring flowering shrub called Weigela florida. It is a native of eastern Asia and is very easy to grow. with Chris Williams Mine have been in for about six years now and they are really starting to look good. Weigelas come in many different forms: there are varieties with variegated foliage, or bronze foliage; flowers can be pink or sometimes white. They flower in late spring, just as the azaleas and rhododendrons are starting to fade.

Weigelas don’t seem to suffer from any pests or diseases and they don’t really require annual pruning.

If you grow one and it gets too big after a while, you can just cut all the canes back to the crown and it will regenerate in no time at all.

They are great for adding a splash of colour to the garden in early summer.

In the vegie and fruit garden Make sure your nets are secure on all fruit trees, fruiting bushes and over the strawberries. ...on garden jobs Pear and cherry slug, a slimy black slug about 4-5 mm long, may appear with Rosemary Davies on pears, apples, plums and cherries over December and early January.

These can be controlled by hosing off with a hard jet of water, dusting the leaves of the plant with any dry dust, even vacuum cleaner dust, diatomaceous earth, or you can use a pesticide such as Derris dust from the nursery. These slugs have no protection from dry dust and quickly shrivel.

Sow some lettuce, carrot, parsley, chives, basil, coriander and dill to add to summer salads. Keep moisture up to vegetables or they will go to seed in hot weather.

In the flower and ornamental garden Hanging baskets will need regular checking as they dry out quickly in windy and hot weather.

Liquid feed flowering plants especially flowering pot plants every fortnight.

Pot up some flowering plants into decorative containers and tie with a red or gold bow to give as Christmas presents.

Trim dead flower heads off everything including roses so you encourage more flowers to appear. Repot fuchsias and take stem cuttings now. Enjoy bunches of scented White Christmas liliums.

In the native garden Choose Christmas-themed native plants to add to the garden. Include Ceratopetalum - the New South Wales Christmas bush, Prostanthera lasianthos - Victorian Christmas bush or Blandfordia - Christmas Bells.

In the family garden Choose from Picea, Norfolk Island pine or even have a fresh large branch of pine as your Christmas tree so you can enjoy the spicy scent indoors!

Ask children to help make Christmas wreaths using pine and fir cones collected from local gardens and streetscapes and wire them on to a wreath base or cut a donut shape from firm cardboard and glue the cones on, adding a red or green bow. Wire cones onto fine chain to make a long garland.

Make a Christmas present for children of a basket with garden gloves, hat, book, seeds, pots and tools.

Adults could have a similar version with hand cream, liquid plant food, seeds, kneeler, bulbs and new tools.

Small but devoted band could do with help The creek area is looking fantastic which is a credit to the efforts of the small group of volunteers who give up a small amount of their time on the third Sunday morning of each month to spruce up the creek environs for the enjoyment of others.

This year for Christmas we hope Santa might bring some extra hands to make our ongoing work in the new year that little bit easier. A big thankyou to all involved and to those who otherwise supported our cause over the year.

A vision for growing up and growing older Input is sought from residents and community groups to assist in the development of a vision for those growing up and growing old in the Macedon Ranges. Two new plans – a Municipal Early Years Plan and a Positive Ageing Plan – will identify priorities and look at how best to support children, families and older residents.

Tribute to Russell Best: champion of environment Field botanist and passionate local, Russell Best, lost his fight with cancer on October 14. Macedon Ranges Shire Council would like to acknowledge the extensive contribution Russell Best made to the community in an effort to conserve and protect the local environment. Russell was central to the flora survey work undertaken as part of Council’s bushland reserve management Russell Best plans. Russell’s passion, positive attitude and expert botanical knowledge will be greatly missed.

Wednesday December 2 sees the start of the annual Macedon Ranges Summer Orienteering Series, starting opposite Macedon Primary School at 7pm.

The following Wednesday events will be held in Riddells Creek on December 9 and Kyneton, at the Botanical Gardens, on December 16. The series then resumes after Christmas-New Year on February 3 at Sunbury, February 10 at Woodend and February 17 at Gisborne.

The series is run by Central Highlands Orienteers based in Macedon.

Free instruction is available and the map is provided within the $4 entry fee.

Celebrating International Day of People with Disability As part of festivities being held across the nation to celebrate International Day of People with Disability on December 3, a dinner dance will be held in Kyneton on Saturday December 5.

The dance, hosted by Macedon Ranges Shire Council in partnership with St Luke’s, Windarring and Haven, will be held at the Kyneton Bowling Club, starting at 6pm.

Tickets are $10 and children under 8 are free. The evening includes a twocourse meal, DJ, MC, open air vintage photo booth, prizes and giveaways.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is seeking comments on a new planning scheme amendment — Amendment C110 — that seeks to manage rural living opportunities in the shire to 2045.

The amendment proposes changes to the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme, including a reduction in minimum lot sizes for nominated land in existing Rural Living Zones around Gisborne, Gisborne South and Riddells Creek.

Residents are encouraged to view the amendment at www.mrsc.vic.gov. au/amendmentC110 or at one of Council’s service centres. A fact sheet is available to explain the key changes.

Fire prevention inspections and roadside slashing programs are well under way. More than 470 fire prevention notices have already been issued. Gisborne Thunder swims up a storm Our members have been “swimming up a storm” over the past month at various events and venues across the state.

On November 7, five of our juniors qualified to represent District 15 at the Victorian 7-10 Country Competition at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Trea Harkin and Charlotte Matthews brought home a second placing in the freestyle relay and Kiera Cooper achieved third. Charlotte also won a third

in the medley relay. Aoife Harkin and Hudson O’Rorke achieved personal best times.

Fourteen of our swimmers competed at the Bendigo East Annual Open Sprint meet on November 15. Nine-year-old Kiera Cooper was unstoppable, winning all of her individual events. All swimmers either achieved personal best times or came home with placings.

November was a busy month with a successful social day at which we had guests from Castlemaine, Maldon, Kyneton, Western Ballarat and Brimbank, all playing with new members from our own club too. It has been exciting to welcome new members and to see them enjoy our game. I thank each of you for becoming part of this great club.

Gisborne Cricket Club is rolling along nicely as we get right into GISBORNE DRAGONS the season. Numbers are strong across www.gisbornecc.com all grades and each weekend there are over 300 people of all ages enjoying playing cricket in Gisborne.

Our senior team is near the top of the McIntyre Cup and at the time of writing was locked in battle with Sunbury, which has been a very strong team for the past few years. Our boys bowled them out for a relatively small total with left-arm dynamo Tahir Afridi again the destroyer, taking another six wickets, pushing him to 18 in four games so far.

All the other grades are making good progress, with some mixed results along the way as we provide experience to our many young players. There are about 25 junior players who are playing regular senior cricket, which is a great thing for all concerned. The future of the cricket club looks bright when we look at the talent and potential in our younger players.

Scuola di Italiana Pesca a Mosca (SIM) “Italian Fly Fishing School” – that’s right, there is a distinct Italian method of fly fishing with light (2 - 3 weight) short rods known as “twigs” used to cast light lines with long leaders (five metres or so) to fish small streams in Italy. CFFA member Ian ‘Koala’ Mitchell, accredited SIM instructor, demonstrated the method at our October general meeting.

The method uses fine rod and line control to enable the skilled “twigging” fly fisher to cast ahead under logs or branches lying over the stream and to cast a fly low around a boulder or large snagged log to a trout in the quieter water behind. It is especially suited to streams with overhanging branches where accurate, tight, low casting is required. Ian also Ian Mitchell, SIM instructor. showed how to cast curves into the line and leader to eliminate current-induced line drag.

The club held a most successful Open Day and barbecue at Riddells Creek Lake Park in November with members demonstrating fly fishing materials and methods. Visitors young and old and prospective members tried their hand at fly casting.

Once again the season has come to an end and Gisborne has had a great year, both on and off the park. We managed to field two competitive teams and finished as one of the top clubs in the competition. The social aspects have also been a highlight with the usual mid and end-of-year functions going well. One last event to come is the Christmas family day where we expect all the families to get together and enjoy the festive season.

We would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped run the club during the season. Special thanks to Matty Mudge, who is stepping down as President after a few years at the helm.

The season is now over but there is still plenty of activity going on down at Masters footy. We train every Wednesday over summer at Sankey Reserve at 6.30pm, followed by a Richard Perkin barbecue and refreshments. Anyone interested, regardless of past footy experience or fitness level, is welcome to come down and enjoy the social and health benefits associated with Masters “Footy for Fun”.

More great walks to finish fabulous year Twenty Gisborne Bushwalking Club members recently enjoyed seven days in a fully catered picturesque group of cabins in the Tumut Valley in NSW. Activities included walks along sections of the Hume & Hovell Track, visiting local galleries, museums and craft centres followed by a variety of entertainment each evening after dinner.

The club is finishing off the year with walks at Anakie Gorge, Warburton Rail Trail, Mt Alexander, Coliban Falls and finally a morning walk followed by Christmas lunch at Elphinstone Hotel with special thanks to our Social Secretary, Shirley.

We had more than 30 walks plus social events during the year, all arranged by our members. Our walkers are mostly aged over 50 years and our activities help us to maintain good health and fitness as well as to have a lot of fun.

Although not finishing among the winners, the experience for Bridie was immeasurable.

Lindsay, Danny and Shirley returned from Perth after finishing in sixth place out of 19 teams from South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia.

Several Victorian tournaments will be attended by club members over the next few months. All are welcome to call in and see how petanque could be your sport or pastime, or if your group want to experience a challenging but fun sport.

The members thank the Gisborne & District Community Bank and staff, along with Macedon Ranges Shire Council for their continued support.

All Abilities a very special day The SGTC hosted the annual “All Abilities Tennis Challenge Day” on Thursday November 12.

More than 40 participants brushed off the flies and the heat and took to the courts to show off the talents and skills that they had learnt over the year.

A fun day was had by all and congratulations to the award winners from the Bullengarook senior campus of Macedon Ranges and Sunbury

Specialist School, SJOG and the DO Tennis team.

Ho. I can’t quite summon the festive spirit to do the “Ho trilogy” – to me it still seems like midMay. Perhaps I got hit in the head with a racquet and have spent a few months in a tennis-induced coma? Anyway Coles tells me Christmas is here; I trust them implicitly.

The club finished off its tennis year in style with a gig at the Gisborne Colour Run on October 18. We ran the Pink Colour Station. It was a great morning with lots of laughs and lots of “pink”. Relying on our elite tennis Lisa Fowler skills we managed expert colour delivery into the bodies of the runners.

The Senior Club Champs played on the same glorious day with the Women’s Singles being toughly fought out and won by Jen Svendsen.

The Men’s Singles is still to be played. Tuesday ladies are in finals, Thursday Night Open have two rounds to go and Juniors and Saturday Open are mid-season.

Martial arts group pulls in 16 state titles The club established itself as the premier club in Victoria at the recent AMAC State Championships, producing 11 Victorian Champions with a massive haul of 16 state titles between them. Building on last year’s debut success at the championships, the club has gone from strength to strength and now looks forward to challenging for National Titles at the Australian Martial Arts Championships.

In the running for community award Macedon Ranges Running Club is pleased to be a finalist in the community-focused Fire Awareness Awards, a venture by Victoria’s fire agencies. The running club was selected from 85 entries for its hydrant inspection project in collaboration with the local CFA and Western Water.

In other club news, the 10km milestone run took place on November 29 at Woodend, celebrating the completion of the Spring Start Running program. The event saw, as expected, strong numbers with support from the club’s members, their families and friends.

The club has also begun preparations for its 2016 Australia Day celebrations on Tuesday January 26 at Sankey Reserve in Gisborne.

The event is a free community 5km run/walk for families, who are all

of 16 victories at the Victorian Championships. The athletes’ development has been remarkable over the past two years and there is now a very real prospect of producing national champions.

Gisborne's 2015 Victorian Champions are Dominique Lopreti, Henry Wilson, Arky Ventouras, Nicole Pliatsiaris and Connor Hall, all of whom claimed two state titles each. Completing Gisborne's list of newly crowned state champions are Hannah Monk, Brayden Cysani, Hamish Campbell, Daniel Beinat, Matt Campbell and Dean Monk.

Macedon Cricket Club Under-14 bowler Hugh Millar took a hat-trick in a recent match and contributed to an awesome win for the team against Riddell’s Creek.

Coach Bruch Brown was thrilled with the whole team’s effort throughout the two-day match, capped off by Hugh’s achievement to finish the game. Hugh took a total of six wickets.

Golfers – and others – enjoy wamer weather The warmer weather with occasional rain has made Gisborne golf course a wonderful place to play and Gisborne ladies plus many visitors from other clubs have been enjoying the conditions.

A field of 72 recently contested the Presidents and Captains day with excellent golf played followed by lunch.

Winners were members Betty Glover and Wendy Ralph with 49 points, member/guest Margaret Barker and Jenny Merriman (Medway) with 47.

The Gisborne Melbourne Cup Week Tournament began with the Ladies Stroke event. This attracted 54 ladies who played in ideal conditions. Kathy Richards, continuing her good form, won the Perpetual Trophy and Jo-anne McPhee was the gross score winner.

B grade was won by Marg Power and in C grade Judy Trimble was the runner up to Joan Gibbs from Kyneton.

Lady members, particularly Suzanne Velk (Vice-President) have combined to produce a wonderful 2016 calendar that highlights the incredible scenery and wildlife encountered at the course. It was with great sadness that we recently lost another of our long-time Life Members, Teresa Millett, aged 75, a Sunbury identity who was an energetic golf club member

Gisborne Girl Guides wrap up for the year The Guides welcome Monique and Lizandrie to the Unit. The girls will work on their commitment to the Promise this month and will say their Promise in front of their family.

The Guides will finish the year with a party and Kris Kringle.

Members Kaetlyn and Madeline are moving to Bendigo and we wish them well for the future.

Guides will take a long break and resume in early February. Girl Guides is aimed at girls 8-13 and we will be pleased to welcome new members in 2016. Phone Deb on 5426 1931 for details.

Obituary: Elaine Joy Chaplin Elaine Joy Chaplin October 28, 1938 – November 5, 2015 Elaine was born in Maryborough to George and Roberta Adams and she had four sisters and two brothers. She attended Talbot Primary School and Maryborough Technical College. She

worked in the Post Office at Talbot after leaving school.

In 1959 Elaine married Ray Chaplin in Talbot. Their first home was in Maryborough but due to Ray's employment with the State Rivers & Water Supply Commission, they lived in various towns where dams were being built – Ballarat, Warragul, Stawell and Bacchus Marsh. In

1974 they moved to Gisborne and lived onsite at Rosslynne Dam, eventually moving to Lyell Street in Gisborne.

Elaine's sporting interests were netball, tennis and squash and she was a member of the Gisborne Tennis Club.

Gardening was also one of her interests along with knitting and crosswords. A Carlton supporter, she was proud to be

related to footballers Graeme and Lance Whitnall, legends at Carlton. For over 25 years, Elaine worked at Flexdrive Industries in New Gisborne. Elaine is survived by her children, Terry, Darren and Helen and their families.

A service was held at St Paul's Anglican Church on November 11 followed by burial at the Gisborne Cemetery.

Local Scouts take to the skies

New Gisborne Cub Scouts wait in anticipation for their light plane flight at Kyneton.

1st New Gisborne (Church of Christ) Scout Group The Scout Air Activities Team recently visited Kyneton for a Macedon Ranges Cub Scout Flying Day. Sixteen Cub Scouts from 1st New Gisborne enjoyed making model aircraft, learning the theory of flight, inspecting an aircraft and, finally, getting airborne in a Piper Cherokee. Many smiles despite some nerves!

The Scouts at New Gisborne are busy planning a hike to Mt Feathertop, a paintball excursion and, to close 2015, a canoeing evening.

Planning for next year’s launch of the Joey Mob is well under way with children (5 to 7 years) and parents meeting each week to learn the excitement of Joeys. Also coming next year on Founder’s Day (February 22) is the opening of the Venturer Unit (15 to 18 years) with the presentation of the Unit’s flag to the Group’s first Venturer, Rebecca Barker (known to Cub Scouts as “Rikki”).

The New Gisborne Scout Group extends best wishes to all for a Happy Christmas and thanks to the local businesses and groups for their support this year.

1st Gisborne Cubs 1st Gisborne Cubs were among 90 Cubs across the Macedon Ranges attending a District Flying day at Kyneton Airfield on November 14. Members of Scout Air Activities Victoria flew from their base at Moorabbin Airport to help facilitate the day.

The day began with the team briefing Cubs on the safety aspects of flying before responding to the many burning questions from their excited Cub

audience. In groups of three, Cubs and leaders joined pilots and took to the skies in small fixed-wing planes. There were many oohs and aahs as Cubs gazed over the landscape below, recognising landmarks such as Hanging Rock, Mount Macedon and Kyneton racecourse. Many of the Cubs enjoying their first experience in a small plane.

Reflections on assisting your children All parents have hopes and dreams for their children and their futures.

We wish them happiness, success, independence, peace, resilience, joy, love, respect for self and others, kindness, wisdom, hope, accountability, authenticity, perseverance, responsibility, tolerance, humility, integrity, courage, spirituality, honesty, a sense of compassion, empathy, belonging and purpose in this world.

We wish them the ability to make a meaningful contribution to society; to have a social and moral conscience; meaningful, healthy and respectful relationships and social interactions; good physical and mental health.

For reasons beyond our control, not all of the wishes for our children will come to fruition as envisaged.

Nevertheless, it is still imperative for us to plant seeds early on in the fertile hearts and minds of children about positive mindsets and value systems, and gently nurture the ensuing delicate growth and development.

Saccharine sentimentality aside, it is vital to consider the ways that we can instil positive values and life-skills in our young people that can help shape their futures in a positive way. Part of our work involves helping children to identify and use their strengths to mitigate their weaknesses so that they can make positive progress and navigate life’s challenges.

So how can we imbue our children with meaningful values? It is important to engage in reflective, responsive, proactive, deliberate parenting and to

I hope to be back later in 2016 in some capacity as a columnist.

Many thanks to the loyal readers and supporters of “Parenting Corner” over the six years and to Bryan Power and the rest of the Gazette team for their terrific commitment to community development. I wish all of you and your loved ones a peaceful and blessed Christmas and New Year. have a clear understanding of the kind of values that one would like to cultivate in one’s family. Here are some suggestions: Make a concerted effort to maintain connectedness with your children through setting aside regular quality time for family meetings and outings; for touching base at meal-times; for fun, relatively inexpensive, family rituals and activities like family movie night, sport, or cooking a meal together.

Keep the communication channels open and use everyday experiences (social interactions, media reports, movie storylines and so forth) as springboards for conversations. Discuss and role-play various scenarios with your children, asking them what choices they could make if faced with a particular situation or moral conundrum.

Choose a monthly theme to focus on as a “value of the month” such as honesty or courage.

Creatively allot awards such as an “Honesty of the month award”, a “Courage to try new things award” or a “Not following the crowd award” to reinforce positive efforts and choices.

Guide your children to learn from their (and your own) inevitable mistakes.

Encourage reflection on how words and actions have consequences on one’s self and others. Brainstorm ways to make up and show restitution when you or your child may have made poor choices; emphasise the importance of taking ownership for one’s individual contribution to problem situations and making reasonable, appropriate, constructive amends.

In addition to reflecting with children on what they think they may have done wrong, also reflect on what they have done right, what they have learned from their experiences and could perhaps do differently when next faced with a similar situation.

Validate, cherish and be kind and respectful to yourself and each other.

International organist to perform at Macedon Friends of Music at Resurrection are delighted to host an organ/piano recital by visiting Czech organist Pavel Kahout on Friday January 15 at 6 pm.

This concert represents a wonderful opportunity for local people to hear the recently installed memorial organ at the Church of the Resurrection.

This concert will be followed on Sunday February 21 at 2.30pm by a performance by the Seraphim Trio, which (with participation of additional performers) will feature the much-loved Trout Quintet by Schubert.

St Brigid’s Parish Be thankful this Christmas I’d like to share a story of a friend, Daniel. Daniel and his family lived in Iraq.

As persecuted Christians they fled to Turkey as Desiree refugees in 2005. After two Chambers years, and losing all their money, they were granted asylum in Australia. Life in Iraq had been terrible. They would go to work, school or the market, not knowing who would return. Seeing so much destruction and so many family, neighbours and friends dying around them, they lived in fear and were even more victimized as they were Christians.

Daniel is so grateful to live here in this country.

This Christmas don’t get caught up in the glitter and perfection of presents. Be thankful for the people around you and the country in which we live.

Like most people, I ask myself this question - "where has 2015 gone?"

This is a perfect time to reflect on the past 12 months of our lives. A year of overwhelming joys, sorrows, successes, challenges, births, deaths and generally the highs and lows of human life, while being embraced by the love of our church, our family and friends.

Twenty of our children are rehearsing, with excitement, their annual children's musical. The children will perform "Welcome to the Welcome Inn" at our church service at 10am on Sunday, December 20, and again that evening at 6pm. All members of the community are invited to a sausage sizzle/supper prior to the evening performance – bring your family, friends and neighbours and be enthralled by the voices and acting of the House of the Rock children, as we throw open our doors to celebrate Christmas with what we expect to be a "full house".

Anglican Parish Christmas – juggling act in getting balance right!

So much of life is striving to maintain some sense of balance amidst the competing demands of family, work and community. The picture of a clown masterfully throwing balls or skittles in the air and catching them is something to admire because it sure is a skill if you have ever tried it.

I could not help but think that this picture of trying to juggle everything fits the demands of the Christmas season with its end of year events, including school graduations, community events and family gatherings. When it all comes crashing down, as it can in any juggling act, and we fail to get the right balance, perhaps the lesson is that we have tried to juggle too many balls or skittles. So I wonder if this Christmas we need to let go of one or two things, and thereby not only make the juggling act more manageable but hopefully the season a whole lot more enjoyable as well.

After all, what we believe is that Christmas is a time of celebration of God’s gift of love in the birth of the Christ child and so this is a time of all times to celebrate and to really enjoy!

100 Years Ago From the pages of the old Gisborne Gazette December 1915 Riddell Enterprise – Our little town has been much livelier lately than for some considerable time. This is mainly in consequence of the shearing operations by Mr Michael Honan, who has recently erected a large shearing shed in close proximity to the railway station. It is a large commodious building, with machinery and all accessories, yards, etc. Mr Honan has secured a fine, efficient staff, and has put through close on 14,000 sheep on his own account and is at present doing the shearing for several local sheep-owners. It is Mr Honan’s intention to further enlarge his scheme of operations and he has greatly added to his property by recent purchases.

Gisborne Shire Council – Ordinary Meeting – Correspondence received from the Secretary of the Automobile Club stating they were supplying signposts for the main roads in the shire. The President said the signs sent were not what they wanted at Upper Macedon. What they wanted was danger signals to protect the public.

New Bridge – The concrete bridge over the Gisborne Creek near Riddell is now nearing completion and a suggestion is to be acted upon whereby an opening ceremony will be held. This bridge has been erected at the joint cost of the Bulla, Romsey and Gisborne Shires.

Fishing – All persons interested in the reformation of the Gisborne Angling Club are requested to meet at Power’s Telegraph Hotel, on Wednesday evening, December 15th, at 8 o’clock – E. A Christening – The christening of the infant son of the Governor and Lady Stanley took place at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Macedon Upper, on Sunday morning; Rev. H.F. Miller officiating. The church was nicely decorated with white lilies and maple leaves by Capt. Conant, ADC, and friends from Government Cottage.

Bush Fire Precautions – The following instructions have been issued to all inspectors (working under the auspices of the “Vermin Destruction Act, 1915”), and we have been asked to publish same. Owing to the luxuriant growth of grass over practically the whole of the State, there is, to a greater extent than usual, the danger of grass and bush fires sweeping through and devastating tracts of country during the coming summer months. It will therefore be necessary for men working on Crown or private lands under the Act to exercise the greatest care and under no circumstances must fires be made in the open. Even if fires are made on grassless, barren places, or in holes with the excavated earth forming an embankment around them, there is always the danger of heavy winds or whirlwinds scattering or carrying the fire into grass fields.

Eco-cottages win silver in state tourism awards Gisborne Peak Winery has been awarded the Silver Trophy Winner of the Unique Accommodation Category in the 2015 RACV Victorian Tourism Awards.

The award was announced at a dinner held at the Melbourne Convention Centre on November 16.

Gisborne Peak owners Bob and Barbara Nixon said they were delighted and proud to be given this award for their eco-cottages and for the recognition it gave to the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges tourism region.

“What a great result! We have put so much effort and thought into these cottages and sometimes, effort and persistence pays off,” said Barb.

She replied, ‘Awe dear heart, that’s nice – are you taking me tae pub with you? “‘Nay,” Fraser replied “I’m turning the heat off while I’m out.”
