I went down to visit one of my sons in Brighton a couple of weeks ago and as I walked from the station down Church Street through the lunchtime crowd I tried to make eye contact with the passersby. No success. Not a one. The next day I decided to try the same experiment in a much less busy Aitken Street and am pleased to report that of the five people I passed four of them caught my eye and returned my smile and “G’day”.

As we enter the ‘season of goodwill to all’ let’s remind ourselves of the importance of exchanging a smile and a greeting, particularly with people we don’t know. It’s one of the great things about being part of a country town, and once we lose this habit we will know, sadly, that our town has just become another outer suburb of Melbourne.

Thanks As I write this I am looking forward to the Gazette’s annual reception on Thursday November 27 (the day after this edition of the Gazette comes out) when I’ll have the chance to greet and thank many of the people who are part of the team that brings the Gazette to you each month. To them and to those who will not be able to make it, on behalf of the Gazette Committee I say thank you most sincerely to our sponsors and advertisers who keep us financial, to our columnists and reporters who fill our pages and to our small production team that puts the paper together each month. Councillor’s Column with Cr Russell Mowatt As I approach the mid-term mark of my term of office, it is my great privilege and honour to be your elected representative for so many new initiatives in the Gisborne District.

This year has seen the culmination of significant work and planning by our councillors, officers and community groups for the future growth and betterment of our local area.

Some of these initiatives for 2015 will be Services: We now have a permanent Gisbus service and will continue to advocate for a trial of all-day and weekend services for our area.

Infrastructure: The Gisborne streetscape revitalisation project will start in the early New Year to address a number of issues raised by local shop owners to improve amenities to encourage local shopping and visitation. Dixon Field redevelopment and the Early Year Hub are two notable inclusions for next year with council and state funding.

Roads: 2015 will see the start of the two roundabouts and dual lanes at the New Gisborne bypass with state and federal funding.

The long-awaited Rodney Street upgrade will be another signature achievement, funded with the assistance of local residents’ contributions through the Special Charge Scheme.

May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Xmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

I would also like to thank GREAT for the wonderful work they do in the community and the volunteers who support the production and distribution of the Gisborne Gazette every month and their continued funding contributions to worthwhile community initiatives.

Rotary exchange student heads home After spending the entire school year hosted by the Gisborne Rotary Club, 17-year-old exchange student Isadora Carestiato is heading back home to Brazil soon.

Having arrived in February after a 38-hour flight to the other side of the world as a wide-eyed, adventurous 16-year-old with little English and knowing no-one here, Isadora soon made friends with local Rotary members, with her host family, and settled in to classes at Braemar College.

Isadora comes from Nova Friburgo, which is in the mountains about two hours from Rio de Janeiro. Since she was 12 she dreamed of learning another language and travelling to

other countries; but English classes at school were boring so she stopped going. Now she surprises herself that she can confidently hold a conversation with any Aussie.

And what have been the highlights of her stay in a foreign country so far from her family? Travelling the outback with 39 other exchange students from 12 countries, making new best friends through Rotary and Braemar, eating Caramello Koalas and falling in love with every flavour of Tim Tams (but is not a fan of Vegemite).

Isadora reckons she’ll never have to pay to stay in another country anywhere because she now has so many contacts around the world.

“This has been the best year of my life. I would love to do it again if I could. Thanks so much to Rotary, to my best host parents ever, and to my great teachers at Braemar,” she said.

Isadora says Australians are fun and interesting people who have changed her life; so that now she feels Aussie by heart and Brazilian by nature.

Rotary offers the chance for local kids to have as much fun and personal development as Isadora did through its year-long overseas student exchange program. Students who will be 15-17 at departure are invited to contact Gisborne Rotary Club on 5428 4483.

Gisborne Festival Plans are now well in place for this year’s event on Friday December 12 at Gardiner Reserve, Gisborne. The Reserve will come to life at 4.30pm with many stallholders and The fireworks will be carnival rides, an animal on at 9.30pm. farm, highland dancers and many activities. With the Bendigo Pipers and the Newham Primary School Band, the Parade will start at 6.30pm from Fisher Street, travelling down Aitken Street into the service road along Hamilton Street and then into Gardiner Reserve.

Live bands will be on stage to entertain us during the evening, and at 8pm the winning entries in the parade will be announced. Tubby the Robot will mingle with the crowd, so have a chat – he loves meeting people. At 9.30pm a spectacular fireworks display will light up the skies so come along and enjoy.

Activities at Gisborne Kindergarten Gisborne Kindergarten children are excited about the activities they have enjoyed during term four.

Children have been able to watch the journey of life beginning as eggs hatch. Our pet hen Lulu was hatched in 2012 and currently provides us with an egg a day for cooking classes.

The children will be able to sing along to the Lightning Creek band who write catchy songs for young children. Several of these songs will be sung at the Graduation concerts to be held

on Monday, December 15. The older children are participating in transition to school programs over the final weeks of term where they can meet teachers for next year and learn about the school environment.

The committee organised a fun afternoon at the Steam Park, and families took the opportunity to end the year with a great social get together.

Thank you to our wonderful, hard working committee for their special efforts over the year. We wish all our families a relaxing, safe holiday.

Be prepared for coming fire season With the fire season now declared, Macedon Ranges Shire Council is urging residents to ensure they, their families and their properties are fire ready.

Council community safety officer Anne-Louise Lindner said a well prepared property reduced the risk of fire to residents and their neighbours.

Residents who receive a fire prevention notice are urged not to ignore it. If the notice is not complied with, Council will be forced to complete the work required and the property owner will be charged the costs as well as a $1,444 fine.

Anyone with concerns about a neighbouring property can call the Council on 5422 0333. Staff will advise when a fire management officer will be in their area.

Enjoy Macedon / Mt Macedon Carols night The Macedon/Mt Macedon Carols by Candelight will be held on Tuesday December 16 at Tony Clarke Reserve.

Hosted by Athol Guy, the program will include performances by Macedon Primary School, Mount Macedon Primary School and Macedon Grammar School as well as bands to open and close the evening.

Live music will start at 6pm and carols will start at 7pm. Come along and enjoy a lovely community event under beautiful Mount Macedon.

Sausage sizzles, coffee, and drinks will be available on the night. In the event of inclement weather, the event will take place at the Macedon Community Centre.

On November 9 “Zipper Chickys and Friends” – an auxiliary of the Royal Children’s Hospital – held a fundraiser for the hospital at the Steam Park in New Gisborne, achieving a total of $3496.

Our small auxiliary is made up of three heart children and four mothers of heart children.

With this fundraiser we are aiming to be able make up 3000 emergency back packs for the hospital to give to families that are rushed in without the time to pack a bag of basic needs such Emma Dwyer as toiletries.

Meet the cycle challenge The Rotary Club of Gisborne proudly announces the Macedon Ranges Cycle Challenge. This is a recreational cycling event that enables participants to ride one of two routes (75km or 130km) on Sunday, January 18.

It’s a great chance to challenge Mount Macedon and see picturesque Hanging Rock and the Macedon Ranges in all their glory.

Now in its seventh year, the event gets better each time.

You can expect a well-conducted event that ticks all the boxes for on-course support: marshalling, route signs, catering at rest stops, and topped off by plenty of great food at the finish-line barbecue. All included in your entry fee of $75.

This is a community fundraiser and a not-for-profit event so you can be certain you will be riding for a good cause. By participating, you will be helping research to find a cure for multiple sclerosis and raising funds to support emergency services and other community programs.

The Oxfam community lunches have grown in numbers and have made approximately $1,000 available for Oxfam programs this year.

The end of year lunch is always special and will be held on December 19 at noon in the Uniting Church Centre. Lunch costs $5. There is no need to bring anything, although we have enjoyed special contributions in the past that some have been happy to share.

Feel welcome to drop in and enjoy fellowship, a good lunch, and a community contribution to a wider world.

Oaks Day at Macedon CWA Oaks Day was celebrated with a garden party for 20 CWA members from across the Central Highlands Group at our Governors Drive home on November 6.

Ladies were invited to dress in an Op Shop outfit for the Fashions in the Field.

This provided sales for the op shop charities as well as providing an interesting twist to the outfits. Barb Talbot took out first prize, dressed by The Oaks Op Shop in Gisborne. Barb had the receipt to prove her outfit’s origin.

We were blessed with a perfect day to enjoy a barbecue lunch and entertainment provided by each branch in the garden.

As we wind down for the year, Macedon CWA wishes all the Gazette readers a safe, peaceful and happy Christmas and New Year season. We also thank all the people who work so hard to produce our wonderful local Gazette each month. We look forward to being with everyone again next year.

Iraq Appeal – Thank You Gisborne Uniting Church would like to say a huge thank you to the community and our sister churches in Gisborne who generously donated to our appeal.

A most gratifying total of $4056 has been raised and will be forwarded to the Act for Peace Program of the National Council of Churches in Australia.

This money will enable the purchase of Survival Kits, Hygiene Kits and Food Ration Packs for distribution to homeless people who are now in camps as a result of the destruction inflicted by ISIL forces in Iraq.

Gisborne CWA enjoys Mulwala trip Eight of our members enjoyed a few days away at Mulwala in October. We rented a beautiful five-bedroom house which was within easy walking distance of town. We discovered the area with visits to local outlets and went on a cruise on the lake.

We celebrated Oaks Day at Lorraine Tweddle's residence at Mt Macedon. Sitting under the shady trees in her lovely garden with members dressed up for the occasion was a good time for all of us who attended.

Our Christmas breakup will be held at the Masonic Hall on December 8 with a shared plate luncheon and a Kris Kringle.

Samaritan's Purse

I sincerely thank the many people from the local community who packed Christmas shoe boxes for the Samaritan's Purse project. We proudly delivered a trailer load – a record number of 190 boxes, all full of lovely gifts for needy children overseas.

I especially thank Gisborne CWA members for their valued contribution and to New Gisborne Primary School Elaine Millar who undertook this project for the first time. Their boxes were beautifully and thoughtfully put together.

Gisborne TOWN Club – be a survivor this Christmas The festive season is again upon us – for most of us the temptation is for excess in our eating and drinking – daily opportunities to indulge in chocolate, chips and dips, and celebratory drinks.

Why not make this year the one when you don't have to ask for the next-size belt in your Christmas stocking. This is

not the time of the year when we are going to lose weight, instead make it the time when we try to maintain our weight.

Exercise restraint, but let yourself have some of the nice little things that come around at Christmas, because if you don't you will feel deprived and unhappy and that's not how you are

meant to feel at Christmas.

Some party foods you may enjoy are: vegetable sticks, pretzels and rice crackers; hummus, beetroot, tzatziki or avocado dips; sushi, sandwiches or quiches. Limit alcohol and mix with soda or diet drinks. You will feel so much better afterwards.

2014 has been an exciting year at The SAFARI Club and we have had much to be grateful for.

To quote Courtney Carver from her blog Living in the Land of Enough, on gratitude: “Life moves so quickly that sometimes we forget to say thank you or even forget to be thankful at all….

Being thankful for something is like enjoying that something all over again.”

We are thankful to all our volunteers for their selfless spirit and happy disposition: wonderful individuals who have supported our program throughout the year, giving their time freely, so that others may enjoy a day of respite.

We are thankful to our members whose individuality adds to the enjoyment of the outings.

Along with the friendships forged, memories are made and treasured by all.

Lastly, we are thankful and grateful to local organisations and businesses such as Bakers Delight and The GREAT Association. We wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and a successful 2015.

Gisborne Library will be a “COOL” place to be in over the summer holidays. On Saturday December 20, there will a family Christmas celebration with a performance from a local children’s choir, Christmas activities and the Librarian return of JINGLE, the slightly naughty Georgina Smith Christmas elf. As a part of the Lego Brick by Brick program at Bendigo library, Gisborne library will host the 'Brick by Brick: On the road' kit from Tuesday January 13 to Friday 16.

We will again we will be running the Summer Reading Club – come in and join up for the chance to win some great prizes. Communities working together share in the results Earlier this year, outdoor tables and seats were vandalised at South Gisborne Tennis Club (SGTC). The “Community Partners” Group from Distinctive Options, Sunbury, who from the South use the reserve for an All Abilities tennis program and outdoor programs expressed their disappointment.

The group was looking for a project to work on and the suggestion was put forward to build another table.

With the support of Bunning’s Sunbury, the Men’s Shed Sunbury and Distinctive Options they were able to manage the project from start to finish.

A plaque has been placed on the table acknowledging those who donated materials, building skills and painting. Well done to all. Your table was greatly appreciated by the SGTC and all users of the courts.

Backyard blitz assists Peavey family Chris and Lisa Peavey would like to say a heartfelt thanks to friends, family and the wonderful Gisborne community.

From day one after Chris's accident in June, offers of help flowed in. Good wishes, flowers, hot meals, barrow loads of wood at the door each night, lawns mowed, picking up and dropping off the boys at school and sport, and in many, many other ways we received support.

Choir wins community award

The Gisborne Singers’ sell-out November concerts in Woodend and New Gisborne saw the choir reach new heights under the passionate direction of conductor and choirmaster Stephen Brockman.

The program was a challenging one that the choir - wonderfully supported by an orchestra of mainly young musicians and four professional soloists – met with gusto.

The first half of the program saw works by Schutz, Handel, Bruckner and Mozart nicely alternated between the choir and the soloists: Christina Russo (soprano), Tomas Dalton (tenor), Manfred Pohlenz (bass) and Kristen Leich (mezzo soprano).

It was good to learn that American born Kristen is now a Macedon Ranges resident and we look forward to hearing her beautiful voice again with the

ARTS in the RANGES BOOK WORMS with Natasha Boyd

Christmas reading The festive time is a fun time for family, friends, feasting and sharing gifts. Here’s some Christmas-themed ideas for big and little kids alike.

1. The best known classics are The Night Before Christmas by Clement C Moore and A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens which have a plethora of versions to choose from.

Don’t forget Best Christmas Book Ever by Richard Scarry or How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr Seuss.

2. Everything I Need to Know about Christmas I Learned from a Little Golden Book highlights favourite characters such as the Pokey little Puppy, Gingerbread Man and many others offering valuable seasonal advice for having a happy holiday.

Unique photos on show in monthly comp Our November 10 competition, Take 5, was an interesting night reviewing the diverse range of submitted images over the five challenges. There were some unique interpretations!

As an internally judged competition, members voted for the top three in each of the five topics. Following the vote each member had the opportunity to ‘critique’ an image providing some insights on the difficulties and delights of evaluating what and why a particular photograph works, or not.

Image authors also had the opportunity to explain how each image was conceived and created.

Our last meeting of the year on

December 6 will see the culmination of the year’s events and a great social event. This will be a barbecue followed by the end-of-year competition held at the club rooms.

We look forward to the 2015 program starting on February 3. There is an awesome collection of events and challenges being planned. New members are most welcome.

What is ADFAS and what do we do?

The Association of Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (ADFAS) is a group of 34 societies stretching along the eastern states of Australia.

Central Victoria is one of these societies, with its own chairperson, committee and currently about 170 members.

ADFAS is a non-profit organisation and is entirely

administered by volunteers.

During the year ADFAS Central Victoria organises art classes, speaker lunches, visits to museums, collections, and galleries and monthly lectures at the Kyneton Town Hall.

Lectures are followed by a generous supper and local wine to enjoy. Lecturers are experts in their field and often

curators of galleries.

Anyone with an interest in the arts can join ADFAS. One of its main features is a social focus: to meet friends, make friends, and renew acquaintances with people who have similar interests and experiences.

stories of two local men who fought in the Great War of 1914-18. Robert Gartside was killed at Gallipoli; Archibald Macpherson survived the conflict but

Young Voices continue to shine Young Voices of Macedon continues to be a thriving group of young singers reaching ever-increasing standards of excellence. This was especially evident in their recent concert 'Songs of the Isles' presented at the Church of the Resurrection on October 26.

The program encompassed songs in varied styles from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland with representation of major composers such as Handel and Vaughan Williams and poets such as William Shakespeare, Alfred Noyes and R L Stevenson.

Guest artist Lucy Forrest delighted the audience with songs accompanied by the celtic harp and choristers Lily Flynn and Dante Romeo also performed impressive solos.

In addition to songs performed by the whole choir, each group had contributions; the Vivos, comprising the youngest singers demonstrated the importance of Solfa in British choral music, the Cantabiles offered

Musical magic at Woodend market Woodend-based Resonance String Orchestra is running a free community music day in Woodend on Saturday December 6. Come along, get involved, and be inspired!

From 11am on, there will be impromptu musical performances at the Woodend Farmers’ Market.

Between 11.45am and 12.30pm, a free percussion workshop for primary school children will be held with Bec Matthews (Circus Oz, Musica Viva) at Woodend Children’s Park.

At 1pm, Resonance String Orchestra will present a free concert at the Woodend Community Centre.

‘Betty’s Boop’ with Betty Doolan This year has gone so fast. Looking back we have had sadness at the loss of a loved one and much joy when we welcome new babies into the family which will happen before Christmas and in the New Year.

The Life Enhancement Program staff have done a remarkable job, I thought it could not get any better after the Masquerade Ball but they came up trumps with Halloween, Melbourne Cup, beautiful Memorial and Remembrance Day Services, singing, dancing, a visit from the Op Shop ladies and Christmas in July.

There was the ‘Colour Run’ (it seems people like to get messy while enjoying themselves); another successful ‘Relay for Life’ for a very good cause and, yet to come, our Christmas party and my annual kiss (I wait in anticipation) from Santa Claus.

I have said it so many times: the effort that goes into looking after the residents makes for a happy home. Don’t kid yourself, there is no place like home, but if for some reason you can’t be there then this is definitely the place to be. So if you have a loved one who is considering going into aged care, this would be the perfect place.

Thank you to all those wonderful people that make Gisborne Oaks such a good place: carers, nurses, LEP staff, volunteers, Op Shop ladies, cooks, cleaners and those folk who work hard and raise money for special equipment at the Oaks, Red Cross singers, the school children and you folk out there who in many ways help to support Gisborne Oaks.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this column as much as I have enjoyed writing it. I wish each and every one of you a safe and happy Christmas. If this year has not been a good one I sincerely wish that next year will be better. So happy New Year and God Bless.

In the blink of an eye it’s already our last column for 2014 and what a mixed bag the year was for us.

Our first activity was moving out of our shed so it could be demolished!

Despite not having our new one yet, as many of you already know, we’re a resourceful bunch and not only have we survived our “shedless year” but we’ve flourished.

Historical Society for providing us with a meeting place and to the Gisborne Gazette for the column space to let you all know we are still rolling along. A bit closer to home, thanks to fellow Shedmen Gunther, Doug, Bill Mac and Tony for all those special arrangements which have kept us together.

Things are looking good for 2015 and we hope to give you some very positive news in our first column next year. In the meantime, to get the unofficial news, drop in for a chat at the old Courthouse any Monday or Thursday morning. We wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.

Colour Run to be bigger and better

More than 170 deaths have been attributed to the heatwave that occurred in January this year. The Department of Health will again issue heat health alerts this summer on days that pose a high risk.

Follow these simple steps to staying safe during heatwaves: ● drink plenty of water ● stay out of the sun ● look after yourself and others.

Beat the heat at libraries Chill out on days of extreme heat at our libraries in Gisborne, Kyneton and Romsey. The key to staying healthy in the heat is to keep cool and stay hydrated.

Macedon Ranges Health’s Colour Run in October was a spectacular success with nearly 700 people participating in the event and 85 wonderful volunteers contributing their help.

Thank you to all those involved in this event whether you were volunteers on our colour pits, handing out T-shirts, setting up, packing up, exhibiting or financially sponsoring the event – without the enthusiasm and support of our wonderful community the day would not have been the colourful, uplifting event that it was.

Gisborne Primary School was delighted to receive a $250 voucher from Gisborne Sports awarded to the school with the most registrations and Envie Fitness were very

generous in handing out two entries into their Summer Bodies Fitness Challenge valued at more than $250 each.

For Macedon Ranges Health, our primary aim is to engage the community and encourage health and wellbeing – we achieved this and had a lot of fun doing it!

To enable more people to participate in this fantastic event in the future we will be extending the registrations next year, but are mindful of keeping the course safe for participants and in particular children.

There will be a new extended course – a one-way course for the 5km run (with a 7.5km option). Colour pits will be even bigger and brighter with lots more colour sachets for the children and teens afterwards.

2014 has seen numerous achievements for Macedon Ranges Health. The new Health Centre is on track for completion by early next year and we will hold a Public Open Day to showcase this wonderful centre to the local community.

Our new CEO Don Tidbury started on November 10 – at the same time as groundcompacting began at our building site next door.

The office vibrated and shook – you could say the new CEO “Shook things Up” on his first week!

Gisborne FNC names new U-18 coach The Gisborne Football Netball Club has appointed Damien Slater as Under 18 Coach for the 2015 season.

Damien has been a member of the club since 2008 as a player, administrator, and as the 2010 Reserves coach and 2011 Reserves premiership player.

Damien represented Wodonga, Eaglehawk, Mitta United and Colbinabbin football clubs before coming to Gisborne in 2008.

He was the 1993 Bendigo Pioneers captain and was a Rookie Listed Melbourne player in 1994 before returning to carve out a 20year career in country Victoria.

Joining the club as player welfare

manager is Rob Bretheton.

Rob will act as a sounding board for players, working through any on or off-field issues to ensure players are in the best possible shape to develop personally and represent Gisborne.

Season’s Greetings After spending several months recovering from multiple surgeries, complications and hospital admissions following an ankle fracture in July, I am back to write my final column of 2014.

When I first started writing this column five years ago, I had no idea the direction it would take or how it would evolve over time. It has never been about dictating to parents about how to raise their children; it has been more about presenting a range of suggestions, practical skills, resources and tools to consider adding to the proverbial parenting toolbox.

It has also been about highlighting and acknowledging the highs and lows of the parenting journey and the need for mindfulness, reflection and self-care along the way.

Parenting can be a tough gig with huge social pressure to be a “perfect parent” with “perfect offspring” which inevitably sets parents up for failure, especially when they fall short of their personal and parenting goals and values. The reality is that life is complicated and messy and challenging. We all do the best we can with what we know at the time. However, there is always room for improvement and personal growth.

I wish you and yours a blessed and peaceful Christmas and a New Year filled with grace and wonder where you embrace the precious gift of family in whichever shape and form that comes.

Life is short. Here’s to being more present, telling and showing loved ones just how special and valued they are and creating memories that capture the true spirit of the season.

Our Year Six School Leaders share their favourite New Gisborne Primary memories.

Macauly: In Year Five I went to Somers Camp. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Johnno: This was my third year taking part in the RACV Energy Breakthrough Challenge. I love it and will never forget it.

Indiah: I enjoyed dressing up in the style of the 1850s and going to the Costume Schools on our Year 6 camp to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat.

Patrick: In grade 4 we had a Biggest Morning Tea. We had the best time and raised money for charity.

The December Young Achiever is Jamie Paull, a Year 4 student at New Gisborne Primary School.

Jamie is a quiet achiever with excellent people skills who volunteers to assist other students.

It is Jamie’s quiet, gentle manner that students like and they are confident to ask her for assistance.

She offers to demonstrate and instruct the class on many of the activities she has done in Maths extension classes.

Tia: I have loved representing the school in netball. I loved playing my favourite game with some of my very best friends.

Yasmin: I participated in Tournament of Minds in Years 3, 5 and 6. It was challenging and fun at the same time.

Kate: I really enjoyed participating in the Milo T20 Cricket Day with all the Year 6 students. We played against schools from across the area and it was a lot of fun.

Congratulations and good luck to all of our Year 6 students. We will always remember you and hope you have a wonderful time making new memories at high school next year.

St Brigid’s students feel the reality of poverty A few weeks ago the Year Six class at St Brigid’s experienced what it is like for many people living in poverty-stricken environments.

The students built shelters out of cardboard and slept on the floor at school with only a few blankets. Dinner was a small bowl of plain rice and one cup of water. We were privileged to listen to a special guest speaker who explained how money we raised was allocated and

how wisely it was being spent. The Social Justice Sleepover was a wonderful success, and it was definitely an eyeopener to all students and teachers who realised just how lucky we really are.

Many students are now completing their primary school experience. The grade six pupils are looking forward to their graduation, and preparing enthusiastically for secondary school.

The last term means we look forward

to our school production (this year “A Big Green Adventure”), the annual parish fete, graduation and Christmas!

It has been a pleasure writing about my amazing school in the Gisborne Gazette. I have loved every moment writing my articles. I would like to thank Bryan for his patience and support on this fantastic journey.

Macedon Primary students colour the world The parents and families of Macedon Primary School were treated to a dazzling show of drama, dance and music in the final week of October as the Grade 3-6 students put on the school’s biennial production.

The John Curtin Building was transformed into an intimate theatre for 200, allowing students to showcase skills developed through the year in the school’s outstanding performing arts program.

School captains lay wreath at service The year 12 class from Bullengarook Secondary Campus attended the Remembrance Day Service in Gisborne on November 11.

School captains Rachael Spencer and Adam Furey Rachael Spencer and represent Bullengarook.

Adam Furey laid a wreath on the memorial during the service along with a number of other community groups and schools. The students observed a minute’s silence before showing their respects during the playing of the last post and the Australian National Anthem.

I am always impressed with the respect shown by our students during these solemn occasions and congratulate them on their attendance and maturity.

Preparing for exciting final week at Mount Macedon Our final week of school at Mount Macedon Primary is jam-packed with exciting activities.

On the Monday we have our Grade 6 Graduation at the Trading Post which is sure to be fun.

On the Tuesday night we will be rocking away at the local Carols by Candlelight at Tony Clarke Reserve. Wednesday sees us at Hanging Rock for our whole school picnic which is always very enjoyable.

The final assembly is ever looming closer on the Thursday and it is an exciting and sad time for the grade 6s as we are going to high school and we have to leave our old primary school.

On the Thursday we also have our Christmas Celebration at the church and after our final assembly back at school we have our parent helpers’ morning tea to thank all the parents who have helped throughout the year.

Our last day of school is the Friday when we clean up and say goodbye. We would like to thank everyone who has made it such as great year at Mount Macedon Primary School and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Another big year winds down at Gisborne Primary

Grade Four students embarked on a brand new camping experience. They explored the Royal Botanical Gardens, experienced a cacophony of nocturnal animal sounds at the Melbourne Zoo Snooze program, traipsed around the CBD and visited the Shrine of Remembrance and the Aquarium.

Grade Threes had Reptile Encounters of their own. Year Six students attended the YMCA camp at Anglesea, with the school seeing if summer scheduling would generate brighter conditions than last year. Year Fives attended a Supreme Incursion about team building.

A polling day barbecue, cake stall and raffle was set up to enhance the senses of the voters at our school, while other fundraisers and special events included an allergy awareness crazy hat day, photographic portraits, shopping tour and school disco. Much of this was organised by our wonderful PFA. T20 cricket brought another big sporting year to a close.

The ‘house full’ sign is precariously close to appearing, as the Education Department implements an enrolment ceiling of 450 students at our now densely populated school.

As we say goodbye to 2014, I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to another successful year in our long and proud history.

Drivers urged to Pass cyclists with Care

The senior year at Holy Cross: setting out on new challenges.

Year of achievements at Holy Cross As the year draws to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on the achievements of the past year. However, it is also important to acknowledge the people behind these achievements, encouraging, supporting and making them happen: the excitement of a Prep child recognising a word in a book; the coming together of an idea that results in positive changes in the school; students showing leadership and speaking in front of their class.

It is exciting to think that every person in the school has an achievement that they can be proud of.

There have been creative minds producing incredible clay works, mathematical achievements, sporting

achievements (too many to mention) and writing pieces from every child that have shown just how much they have grown over the year.

All of these require parents listening to home readers, over and over, lots of dirty hands in the art room, creative ways to make maths fun, inspiration that gives ideas for writing and lots of sport practice at lunch times.

Mrs Ritchie and our school community thank our year sixes for their great leadership this year and wish them well for the next part of their journey. We look forward to celebrating their primary school life at Graduation with a special evening planned for December 9.

Drivers are the focus of a summer campaign aimed at keeping cyclists in the Macedon Ranges safe.

Bike Safe Macedon Ranges is set to launch its second major on-road summer campaign which asks drivers to watch out for cyclists and pass them with care.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council and Road Safe Central Victoria are both campaign partners.

President of Bike Safe Macedon Ranges Margaret Douglas explains: “This campaign is about education and awareness; it is targeted at both motorists and cyclists. They both are legitimate road users but the cyclist is more vulnerable. We want both to get home safely to their families.

We are most grateful to the council for recognising the importance of this safety initiative and for providing funds to make the campaign a reality.”

A simple message will be promoted to motorists to allow sufficient safe space when overtaking cyclists.

Cyclists will be reminded to ride with commonsense and courtesy towards

motorists.

“Waiting until it is safe before passing a cyclist takes just a few seconds out of a driver’s day but those few patient seconds could save a life,” Ms Douglas said.

GREAT gives $50,000 to community activities The GREAT Association has donated $50,000 back to the community in the past financial year.

The Treasurer told the association’s AGM recently that this included funds for the Amphitheatre planned for the John Aitken Reserve in the not-toodistant future, and funding much of the setting up costs of the shop at 23 Hamilton Street, Gisborne.

The following office-bearers were elected at the Association Annual General Meeting – President: Graeme Millar, Vice-President: Patsy Smith; Treasurer: Dorothy Murray; Assistant Treasurer: Ian Boyd; Secretary: Graham Dickinson. Committee: Re-

For many students and their families there will be happiness and relief when they find out they have the ATAR score and meet the prerequisites to get into the course of study they have worked so hard for. For some students who have also worked very hard, there will be a natural reaction of disappointment as their score will not be high enough for direct entry.

It is really important in these circumstances to remember that an ATAR score will only tell you what your starting point is – you have many options. For example you can begin your studies through another course and transfer later.

Uni arranges a sweet excursion

Gisborne Secondary systems engineering students took part in a program in October put together by La Trobe Uni for students interested in studying engineering.

The federally funded LEAP (Learn Experience Access Professions) program began at La Trobe with an introduction into the world of engineering and the possibilities

that it opens up.

After trying out some robots, we took a bus to Mondelez International Food Innovation Centre. This company owns many food brands including Cadbury.

We were shown around some of their vast facilities to get some insight into some of engineering’s practical applications.

Engineering is used everywhere in food design, from the moulds

to the machine components that process and dispense the chocolate.

The very generous people at Mondelez International gave each of us a massive bag of chocolate.

Engineering is global and opens many pathways; it is a versatile and worthwhile field to study. Thank you to Mondelez International and La Trobe University for creating this opportunity for us.

Biology students head to Werribee Zoo

Twenty-four Year 11 biology students, with teachers Angela Narayan-Butler and Tracy Lee, travelled to the Werribee Open Range Zoo in October to complete our work on ecosystems.

It was a fun-filled day during which we were able to experience parts of the natural world we normally wouldn’t be able to. For example, on the safari we saw both a baby hippo and a baby rhino. The rhino, Kipenzi, has been hand-reared by the keepers to ensure its survival after its mother proved slightly too heavyhanded with her previous young.

Because of this, little Kipenzi likes to follow cars and people. We were lucky enough to see her at feeding time and had the delight of watching her run along next to our safari bus for the majority of our tour.

This amazing experience was, for many, the highlight of the trip.

Year 11s complete their biology program with an excursion to Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Keeper Jen guided us through our outcomes and talked about the importance of conservation, especially with regards to native flora and fauna.

She told us about Zoos Victoria’s pledge to save 20 native animals from extinction and we were able to look at one of the animals they have pledged to save, the Eastern Barred Bandicoot.

It is now more than a century since the beginning of World War 1. The Historical Society is sharing with readers a series of stories about the contribution of local families to the war effort.

The McDougalls of Macedon

Duncan and Jessie McDougall produced two daughters who served as nurses in Europe during World War I. This is the family’s story.

Duncan Peter McDougall born 1851 and Jessie nee McRae born 1850 came from Fort William in the highlands of Scotland (Inverness) and settled at Macedon in the home built by Duncan they called “Ardentone”.

Duncan, who had been an agricultural labourer in Scotland, was employed as a gardener at Macedon State Nursery.

Their family of four were enrolled at Macedon State School: Mary Isabella in 1891, Flora in 1892 and twins Catherine Agnes and Alexander John in 1896.

Sadly Alexander died in 1906 at the age of 16 and was buried in Macedon Cemetery.

Catherine Agnes McDougall 1889-1976 On April 25 1917, Catherine, known as Kitty, enlisted as a Staff Nurse and embarked from Melbourne on the “Karoola”.

Kitty wrote home in May 1918 describing the conditions at her ‘hospital’. They had had tinned milk when she arrived but as that ran out they had only powdered milk – “simply awful stuff, just coloured water” she wrote.

She said the nurses had been on half rations since Christmas. “What I wouldn’t give for just a pat of butter, or one good sound, square meal of bacon and eggs!”

While they had to work in tents, “frozen almost to tears”, she went through it willingly because “I have seen what our men ... are going through for us. In your wildest imagination you could not picture what they endure during the cruel months of winter.”

Kitty returned to Australia on February 6, 1919, and in early April was one of three returned locals honoured at a special Welcome Home ceremony held at Jubilee Hall. The Gisborne Gazette of April 25, 1919, reported:

“Welcome Home at Macedon “On Wednesday April 9 a welcome

After her return from the war, Catherine joined the Good Shepherd Order of Nuns. She died at Fitzroy in 1976 aged 87 years.

Nurses Mary and Catherine (Kitty) McDougall both served in the war. Kitty later became a nun. Mary entered religious life for a time but did not remain in the convent.

home social was tendered in Jubilee Hall to Private Roy Goodear, Private Charles Irwin and Nurse C A McDougall, all of whom having recently returned from the front. A large attendance was present to do honour to the workers who had helped to fulfil a noble cause.

Sir Henry Hodges presided, delivering a very eloquent and impressive speech.

Mr Lister MHR assured the audience that the returned soldiers were alive to the interests of the community.

“Cr J A Beattie, President of the Gisborne Shire Council, presented each of the guests with a beautiful illuminated

certificate. The recipients returned thanks, Nurse Kitty McDougall humorously relating one or two incidents on the cheery manner which some of the soldiers she had come in contact with had borne their injuries; so much so that it helped to make the onerous duties of a nurse a more pleasant function than could be imagined.”

The Woodend Star of June 19, 1919, recorded “The formation of Returned Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League at Macedon. Members of the Victoria League were present at the Empire

Mary Isabella McDougall 1885-1974 On July 25 1917 Mary enlisted as a Staff Nurse and embarked from Melbourne on the “Somali”. After her return she also joined the Good Shepherd Order but she did not remain, and for a time she became Matron of Xavier College.

Mary then returned to Macedon and was listed as a ratepayer on the voter’s rolls from 1917 until she sold land in 1956.

Mary was active in the district as an Infant Welfare Nurse from 1952, operating from the CWA Hall at Mount Macedon. Mary died in 1974 at the age of 89 at Nazareth House and is buried in the family grave at Macedon with her parents Duncan and Jessie and her brother Alexander.

Trees in Honour Avenue Macedon recognise the contribution of Mary and Kitty McDougall in serving their country.

Like Kitty, Flora McDougall became a nun with the Good Shepherd Order in Melbourne where she remained all her life.

From the Woodend Star of November 16, 1918, we read, “Peace celebrations were quiet – business on as usual. School children at Macedon marched round the town headed by Mr Duncan McDougall and his concertina – patriotic songs were sung on the march and a holiday announced in honour of the occasion.”

Historical Society News

The 20 photographs of stereographs created

by J H Jones c.1861 and subsequently donated to the Historical Societies in the Macedon Ranges Shire by Bendigo Art Gallery following an exhibition in 2013, are currently being framed alike so that the collection may be shared in various locations within the Shire.

Thanks to Bendigo Community Bank, a grant will go towards assisting Gisborne & Mount Macedon Districts Historical Society with their share of this project.

The Society will celebrate the beginning of a well-earned break over the festive season with a luncheon at the Gisborne Court House on Wednesday December 10 at a cost of $5.00.

Research and working sessions will resume on Wednesday January 14 at 10.00am, with the first activity for the New Year planned for Sunday February 1.

The evening of Wednesday, November 12, saw the last film screening of the year for the Macedon Ranges Film Society.

Animated discussion followed the film, the question on everybody's lips being – which was the best film of the year?

Was it the first film of the year, The Sapphires, that all-Australian favourite? The Israeli gem, The Band's Visit, had popular support. Mary and Max, Adam Elliot's claymation film, was remembered fondly. Or was it that last one, that one on November 12 - the hilarious Bienvenue chez les Ch'Tis (Welcome to the Sticks)? Could people agree? No. But all agreed that the suppers following the films were wonderful!

2015 will see a pleasing variety of films again, taking into account members' tastes and including many genres.

It would be an unusual person who would be bored with what is shown on the second Wednesday of the month at the Woodend Community Centre.

But for now the committee and members of MRFS are taking a break. But don't go away because we'll be back and going into our sixth year.

Two Gisborne teams fight it out The summer has started well with all teams showing some great tennis.

Gisborne Junior Tennis Club’s two A2 tennis teams faced off against each other recently. On a near perfect spring day the Vipers came out on top with a six-game advantage over the Mustangs.

With only 25% of the season played, teams doing well on the ladders are the A2 Vipers, B2 Bandicoots and the C2 Crocodiles who are all second. The C1 Cobras, C2 dragons and C3 sharks are all in contention for finals.

In the player rankings, Luke Hudson is doing very well, leading the A2 ranking. Well done Luke, keep it up!

Cricketer makes state Under-17 squad Gisborne’s Matt Underwood, who now plays with the Footscray-Edgewater Cricket Club, is one of six representatives from country Victoria to make the squad announced by Cricket Victoria for the Under-17 National Matt attends Championships to be held in Hobart from December 1 to Braemar College.

Netballers realise a dream The Macedon Ranges Netball Association (MRNA) held its Annual Representative Tournament on 12 October only two days after receiving the keys to their new courts so it was all hands on deck to ensure they were ready for the 600 netballers and their entourages.

There were more than 1,000 people onsite and it was thrilling to see the new courts in action for the first time.

President Lisa Russ could not take the smile off her face as she watched the games and would like to personally thank all the volunteers from the association for making the day such a huge success.

To add to the excitement of the day, the MRNA was visited by representatives of Bendigo Bank who presented a cheque for $50,000. This money will contribute significantly to the development of stage two of the netball complex which will include additional car parking and a pavilion. The association, together with Macedon Ranges Shire Council, are completing a detailed design of their pavilion which will incorporate a meeting space, control room, office, first aid

Happy winners at Gisborne Ladies Annual Open Sixty golfers recently ventured onto the Gisborne Golf Club course in near perfect conditions both weather and coursewise to compete in the Ladies Annual Open Tournament. The top two grades competed for both Gross and Nett trophies, while C Grade was a Stableford event.

Club Captain Jo-anne McPhee, playing on a handicap of six, blitzed the course with a magnificent score of 71. She is now planning a visit to some wineries courtesy of Wine Tours Victoria who once again sponsored the Overall Gross Winner Trophy.

There were also very happy winners of the A&B Grade Stroke and C Grade Stableford events when they were presented with GPS Rangefinder watches by Kay Atlas of Atlas Conveyancing Services.

Kay, a long-time member of the club, has been a keen and generous supporter of this event over the years. Glenda Woods of Seymour and Marg Power and Judy Trimble of Gisborne were the lucky recipients.

Croquet players enjoy days at other clubs November was busy with many members enjoying the fellowship of other clubs. Some ventured to Brimbank for a Cup Day celebration while others visited Kyneton for a social day.

Our own social day filled up very early and we had a waiting list for those hoping for a spot. We can only accommodate 32 players in this competition. This means that we have two games happening on each court and that during the day no one plays with or against the same players more than once. Thanks to our tournament organiser Jean for a great day.

1st Gisborne takes a bike hike to Queenscliff Twenty-three Scouts from 1st Gisborne Mitch-ell and Ross Watt Scout troops travelled to Queenscliff over the Melbourne Cup weekend for a bike hike.

The group travelled by train from Gisborne to Southern Cross Station then on to Geelong South for the first part of their adventure. They collected their bikes then rode 35 kilometres to the Queenscliff Sea Scout Hall, carrying day packs and repair equipment in case of bike emergencies.

For the next three days the group fished, swam at the beach, visited Fort Queenscliff Museum and took turns in cooking and

cleaning as part of their patrol duties.

One of the activities involved a photo scavenger hunt where Scouts had to have a photo taken of their patrol visiting locations or doing tasks around the town.

One of the tasks involved doing a random kind act for another person, while another involved having a photo taken with the Australian flag in the background.

– Daniel Scouts were kept busy with challenges at Queenscliff.

Ross Watt take on Cohen Shield Ross Watt Troop attended the Cohen Shield this year at Treetops with four patrols and 26 scouts.

Cohen is a weekend patrol competition where you complete set tasks and score points. Some of the tasks were construction, first aid, codes and signals, navigation and cooking. We also get to do fun activities such as canoeing, games, archery etc.

You are awarded with a participant, Bronze, Silver or Gold award. This year Ross Watt was awarded Four Gold Awards. Congratulations to the Patrol Leaders, Rowena Campbell, Jacob Stewart, Ethan O’Neill and Amy Oliver for a job well done and, of course, to all the patrol members who worked so well as a team.

Colin Rodgers had to share out the treats to the monsters who came calling on Halloween night.

Halloween fun for Gisborne Guides Can you eat a donut swinging from a rope with your hands tied behind your back?

Gisborne Girl Guides can but it is not an elegant look!

This challenge was taken as part of the Halloween theme dress-up program organised by the Group.

Each Patrol was given the challenge of lighting a campfire to melt marshmallows for a favourite treat – s’mores. For non-guiding families, this is when you melt a marshmallow and place it between two chocolate wheaten biscuits with the chocolate facing inwards.

They are sickly sweet but you always want more!

Several of our Girl Guides are also members of the Mount Players Youth Group so we had the opportunity to enjoy a performance of Suessical the Musical.

The girls will end the year walking in the Gisborne Festival parade as support to the Family Day Care float.

Girl Guides will take a long Debbie summer break and return on Fleming Thursday February 5 when we will plan our camp to Ocean Grove booked for March.

Well, it is everybody’s business...

Ross Watt Scouts go for a flight.

Gisborne Scouts take to the air Ross Watt troop took to the air at Kyneton Airfield with the Branch Air Activities Team. First they undertook training to gain their Pioneer and Explorer Air Activities badge and then they went for a flight.

They flew over Kyneton and down to Hanging Rock and near Mount Macedon. The scouts all enjoyed the experience and are now completing their badge work for their much-deserved badges.

Wow! What a morning we had at the Melton water treatment plant. Our guide Ryan took us to the primary number one section where a machine separates all the rags and other things that shouldn’t be there from the sewage.

We saw all the fats and oils being separated to the top of the tanks. They use a sprinkler to keep the smell down. After that we saw the air ration tank that was used to put air and bugs into the water – the bugs ate the poo!

Then we saw the methane tank where there was a lot of pipes and a sign saying FOUL AIR (the air was already foul and we didn’t need the sign).

The last thing Ryan told us was that they collect the methane gas and recycle it to run the plant. As well, they use the left over material to make fertiliser after it has dried out in the paddocks.

We went inside the building and looked at the computers and some of the cables. We also saw all the toys, teeth and phones they have collected that were flushed down the toilets.

So that’s what happens to the poo when you flush the toilet.

Cubs visit Treetops Riding Academy On November 8 both Hamilton and Jackson Pack Cubs met at Treetops Riding Academy at Toolern Vale to have a go at riding a horse.

The Cubs learnt some of the skills of riding and how to take care of a horse.

Then we got split into groups from tallest to shortest and had a go at walking and trotting a horse.

Each rider had a go at grooming and feeding their horse. Some of the horses that were ridden were Buddy, Spirit, Dexter, Coco and Charlie.

At the end of the visit everybody was exhausted so we had some fruit and lemonade. As a treat we also got an icy pole to cool down.

It was a great visit and now Cubs are getting ready for our next adventures; camp cooking, canoeing and the Gisborne Festival Parade on Friday December 12.

Great tips gained in lake-craft talk The full group at the Police Air Wing.

Scouts visit the Police Air Wing 1st Gisborne scouts went to the Police Air Wing and learnt about what the police do to protect us. It was for our Air Activities badge and it was a great night and we learned lots.

We learned about what the police planes and helicopters do. This includes day and night watching, using night vision goggles, thermal imaging and more.

We went to the hangers to see the helicopters, the air ambulance and the police/ambulance helicopter.

I thought that the police that worked there had to be extremely dedicated to do all that training and stay for so long in their job. I would love to do it again. Ben

John Guljas, our highly experienced “Oz Trout Hunter” (Google it!), gave an interesting and informative talk in October.

His focus was on nearby lakes, detailing the best littoral locatiosn for various weather conditions, some seasonal entomology (for the selection of flies) and the appropriate gear and techniques to use.

Council proposes to better integrate its consultation framework with project planning, and use new technologies to coordinate and manage consultations.

A number of upgrades will be undertaken in Gisborne and New Gisborne over the summer. ● Aged picnic settings at Ross Watt Reserve, Jackson Creek Reserve and Aitken Street Reserve will be replaced by mid-February. ● Hamilton and Kemp Roads, New Gisborne, will be resealed. ● New footpath on Howey Street, Gisborne, between Worcester Road and Keily Roads. ● Resheeting of parts of the unsealed McConnell Road and Waterson Roads, South Gisborne. ● Upgrade of Rodney Street, Gisborne, to bring it up to standard incorporating kerb and channelling, drainage, car parking, footpath and asphalt surface. ● Streetscape works along Brantome Street and Fisher Streets; works scheduled to begin in January. ● Works including pavement and sealing repairs, resurfacing and kerb and channel renewal will take place in Aitken Street, Brady Road, Dalrymple Road, Emmeline Drive, Ferrier Road, Fersfield Road, Fisher Street, Greenvale Drive, Mount Gisborne Road, Panorama Drive and Willowbank Road.

Residents and landowners are invited to review In the Rural Living Zone, a draft strategy on managing land in this zone. The Rural Living Zone is the council’s preferred location for rural-residential style development and hobby/ small farm activities.

The paper presents the preferred approach for managing rural living in the shire to 2040.

Council held local drop-in events where residents could discuss the strategy in person with the planning team. The Gisborne session was held on November 24.

Barringo Road bridge gets upgrade The Barringo Road bridge at New Gisborne is currently being upgraded. Works include a new concrete deck overlay and the upgrade of the roadside barrier. It is expected to finish in midDecember. The road is open but traffic is limited to one lane.

Preventing violence against women: it’s everybody’s responsibility The Council is taking a stand against domestic violence in support of White Ribbon Day. White Ribbon Day on November 25 signalled the start of ‘16 Days of Activism to Stop Violence against Women’, which ends on Human Rights Day, December 10.

White Ribbon Day Ambassador Cr John Connor said Macedon Ranges Shire Council was committed to preventing violence against women and reducing any stigma around the issue.

Animations will be projected on to key buildings around the shire on the evening of White Ribbon Day and during the following 16 days of action. Created by artist Freya Pitt, the animations will explore attitudes and behaviours that contribute to domestic violence.

Another enjoyable day for the Gisborne Garden Club! November’s meeting saw nearly 40 members and nine newcomers appreciate two suburban-size gardens in Kyneton.

The weather was perfect, which always enhances a garden visit, although I’m certain both venues would have been just as superb no matter the weather.

Every garden displays its own special qualities that makes it unique, but a common feature of both these gardens was the absolute generosity of plantings – though quite different – creating both a calming and welcoming effect in each.

Many ideas for combinations Kerry of plants species and the Langmaid placement of ornaments and artefacts offered inspiration to be taken away and maybe utilised by some of those visiting; our thanks to the hosts of both venues for allowing the club to visit.

The final meeting for the year will be the Christmas Lunch on December 10, after which we will have a break over January, and meet again in the New Year on Wednesday February 11.

The program for 2015 will be distributed at the December lunch.

The Friends put on morning tea for the guests.

Bird search on Mount Gisborne Five members of the Woodend Bird Observers group joined the Friends of Mount Gisborne Reserve on November 1 to track down the birds present at the site of a windy and wintry morning.

The visitors were quick to detect birds through their calls and the Friends were impressed by their expertise in locating the following 21 birds within an hour of exploring the reserve: Australian Magpie, Black-faced Cuckoo-

shrike, Brown Thornbill, Crimson Rosella, Eastern Rosella, Fan-tailed Cuckoo, Grey Fantail, Grey Shrikethrush, Horsfield's Bronze-Cuckoo, Little Raven, Nankeen Kestrel, New Holland Honeyeater, Red Wattlebird, Shining Bronze-Cuckoo, Spotted Pardalote, Striated Pardalote, Striated Thornbill, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Superb Fairy-wren, Yellow Thornbill and Yellow-faced Honeyeater.

Hi Everyone, Summer is here once more, I hope it is kind to us this year and that we get some rain to make life easier in the garden.

I have been enjoying the roses at Bolobek over the past few weeks.

Some of the old-fashioned climbing roses are among my favourite plants.

We have an arbor with a huge specimen of “Wedding Day” and a couple of the lovely dusky pink, perfumed rose called “Albertine”.

I have been keeping an eye out for the onset of black spot on the rose foliage; the drier than normal spring has kept most fungal problems at bay so far.

The roses that were planted this winter in the picking garden are establishing nicely now and are covered in buds. Soon we will be able cut some flowers, providing the rosellas don’t discover them first!

Arborists have been dead-wooding the huge old oaks and we have removed a copper beech that had died. A replacement beech has been planted nearby.

In an old garden such as Bolobek, we must always plan for the replacement of trees that have reached the end of their lives.

It is very rewarding to see the next generation of trees establishing themselves; one day they will make a valuable aesthetic contribution to the landscape.

Well, that is it from me for 2014. I do hope that everyone has a Happy Christmas and a great New Year.

We’re wormy... in a good way Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Green Team has started using worm farms at the three main offices in Gisborne, Woodend and Kyneton.

The worm farms are to help us to reduce the amount of organic waste going to landfill.

Worm farms have many benefits and are easy to use.

The historic sign from the days of the Shire of Gisborne states “Foot traffic only” to protect the flora and fauna in the Nature Reserve.

Changes start to benefit Daly Reserve biodiversity Friends of Daly Nature Reserve news It has been another busy and rewarding month for the group, working both in the reserve and behind the scenes.

Council has begun removing some of the pines that are growing in the otherwise pristine areas of bushland, while preserving the historic pines and cypress around the boundary.

In Victoria, less than 1% of native grasslands continue to exist. The native grasses in Daly Nature Reserve are being allowed to grow to enhance the

biodiversity of the site, and this is already having a positive effect on the grasses.

As well, many acacia and eucalyptus seedlings are regenerating naturally. The Friends are continually reviewing the environmental management plan to keep it up to date as work progresses and new information is discovered.

Obituary

Marian Ciopicz

(November 17, 1944 – October 9, 2014) Marian was born in Hedendorf, Germany, to Polish parents Aleksy and Wiktorja Ciopicz. He and his parents migrated to Australia in 1949 along with an older sister and younger brother, and were placed in accommodation in Maribyrnong.

Aleksy bought land at North Sunshine and slowly built their home in Sandford Avenue.

Marian’s younger sister was born in Australia.

Marian attended St Teresa’s Primary School in Albion, Our Lady’s Primary School Sunshine Marian Ciopicz was a and finally Sunshine Tech. He familiar figure around the worked in a local delicatessen after community school and weekends.

At 16 he started his first job at Taubmans Paints as a junior clerk, stopping a bus to apply for the role after seeing it advertised on the front of the office building. He attended night school to study accountancy and later became a registered Tax Agent, running his own successful taxation business from home after hours.

He left Taubmans and joined Armstrong York as their accountant, then continued his accounting career with Frozo Foods, Taubmans (for the second time), McKenzie Truck Lines, Sands & McDougall, Zerak, Flexdrive Industries, Denso and MHG Plastic Industries, eventually retiring in 2006 at age 62.

In 1969, he and Carolyn bought an acre of land at Macedon and built their own home with the help of his father, brother and friends. They married in 1971 and had three children – Letricia, Stuart and Tamara. They were blessed with two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, and eventually six grandchildren, whom Marian cherished.

Marian was always very community minded. On moving to Macedon, he became a volunteer of the local CFA. Over the years, Marian was also treasurer of the Macedon Primary School Council, Jubilee Hall (becoming a trustee of the hall and overseeing its rebuilding after the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires), Macedon Junior Football Club and Sacred Heart College.

After retirement, he joined Probus in Gisborne and held the position of Secretary. He was the financial adviser of St Brigid’s Parish, an official auditor for many local sporting clubs and groups, as well as a Justice of the Peace. Marian also managed to fit in a cooking course of 10 weeks in which he perfected peeling carrots, later upgrading to peeling potatoes!

Marian’s life revolved around family and friends. He was at his happiest when he was surrounded by his grandkids, and loved any excuse to see them or spend time with them. Marian was a ‘people person’, often striking up conversations with strangers wherever he was and somehow managing to get their whole life story in a matter of minutes! His face was a familiar one around the community and one that will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A note from Rob Mitchell MP It’s hard to believe how quickly this year has passed and that Christmas is just around the corner. However you spend your time this holiday season, whatever your traditions are, I hope you have a safe and wonderful time.

This is a good time to remember that not all of us will be fortunate enough to spend this time with family and friends. I understand that Christmas and the holidays can be the loneliest time of the year for some. If you are without family or companionship this year, please reach out and our community will be there to help you.

For some of us, work doesn’t stop at this time of year. The days of Christmas past . . .

My husband and I together with one toddler and one newborn moved to Bullengarook in 1970. Our daughter began her education at Bullengarook in 1972 starting a whole new era for our family which had increased by then with another child. It is hard to come to terms with the fact that it means we have lived here for 44 years. Where has the time gone?

What made me reminisce on days gone by was the fact that the shops are gearing up for Christmas again and I began looking back on Christmases past. When Helen started school and the end of the year came around the school children, after much rehearsal, would put on a concert for the parents at the Recreation Centre Hall (which was only half the size in those days). I clearly remember being asked to dress Helen in an ABBA outfit and Damien as a shepherd or something for the nativity play.

We would all dutifully arrive at the hall about 7pm on the night in question with the kids in costume. While we parents renewed acquaintance with neighbours we hadn’t seen for some time, the children would run excitedly around, the boys using costume props as

weapons to attack the girls. Finally the concert would begin and we would be treated to a wonderful variety of singing, dancing and acting as only children can produce.

At the end of the evening’s performance Santa would make his grand entrance and each child would receive a present from under the Christmas tree. (These gifts of course were supplied secretly by the parents to the monetary value set by the Mothers’ Club).

Supper was then enjoyed by the grown-ups whilst the children adjourned outside to enjoy their gifts. About 10pm we would gather up our very tired kiddies and head for home having congratulated the teachers on the success of another wonderful Christmas production.

Gosh I really miss those wonderful days when our major worry was, “please don’t let (who ever) get stage fright and forget their lines…”

This year we’ve decided to try out something a little different at Christmas by replacing the Christmas Morning service with a Christmas Eve service.

We’re planning the evening service to be a really meaningful and special time of worship, while allowing families to have more time on Christmas morning to spend together before the busyness that often goes along with Christmas Day. The Christmas Eve service will begin at 9pm at the Church – 31 Saunders Road, New Gisborne – and will run for about an hour. There will be “goodies” afterwards for those

who can stay. All are welcome.

Here’s how the organisers describe what they have planned: Come sing with the angels and worship at the manger as we celebrate the significance of Christmas.

Join us in this old-fashioned Christmas service, complete with candles and carols, concluding with mulled wine and traditional delights.

All little angels, shepherds and wise men are welcome, be they in dress-ups or in their pyjamas – and there will be treats for them too, after the service.

100 Years Ago From the pages of the old Gisborne Gazette December 1914 The State Elections – Owing to the war and the drought, there was a falling-off in the State elections which were held on Thursday last, with the result that, though the rolls, which now include the women’s vote, were larger, there was a reduced poll. Owing to strong organization, Labour led in Gisborne, New Gisborne and Riddell, but there was a falling-off in Sunbury, Werribee and other places.

Cricket – A district cricket association has been formed, comprising Gisborne, Riddell, Macedon and Woodend.

Competitive matches will, however, not commence until after the New Year. The Gisborne club will open its season on Saturday, with a scratch match amongst those who assemble, and lovers of the good old game should turn up in numbers to support its revival in Gisborne.

Progressive Gisborne – Letter to the Editor. “I notice that since the council decided to allow horses, as well as cows, calves, sheep, etc., on the streets, Gisborne township has quite freshened up. One good effect of allowing the horses out is that the trees will not require so much pruning this year, and the hedges in the gardens are being pruned in the same way. One fine young mountain ash or rowan tree has had all the bark pruned off. Some of the horses may breast the fences if the hedges are too far in, but householders should see that the fences are sufficiently strong to bear this. On the whole, Gisborne is greatly improved since the Progress Association got to work.”

The Telephone – Arrangements are being made to have all the wires from the New Gisborne railway station carried underground from the street to the post office.

The duplication on the main trunk line will shortly give the people of Gisborne an improved service.

Business in Gisborne – Though our business people feel the effect of the drought and the war, there is no cause to give way to despondency, as we are in a very different position from that of our allies, whose territory is occupied, or partly occupied by the enemy. Business, which is the life of the Empire, must be attended to, hence it is only right that the local shop-keepers should display their wares, especially at this season of the year. Starting from the bridge, there is every sign of the Xmas season. Mrs. Haines’ refreshment rooms present a bright and inviting appearance. Mr. Moffitt’s drapery establishment is attractive to old and young, with the two large plate glass windows showing millinery, costumes, and blouses, men’s clothing and hats.

There is also a large stock of fancy goods, and toys, a figure of Father Christmas presiding over the latter.

Mr. Barlow has a good display of fruit, plants and vegetables. Mr. C.F. Swinburne’s boot emporium comes next, where there is an exceedingly large stock. At the two corners, facing the fountain, there are the two general stores, Sansom’s and Finnigan’s, where everything from a needle to an anchor may be bought and where the season is marked by large well-dressed windows, showing all kinds of delicacies. Crossing over to Hamilton street, we pass Power’s Telegraph Hotel to Miss Bartlett’s drapery establishment, where Miss Bartlett is holding the annual Christmas cash fair.

Extract from “The War News”. The Australians, as we anticipated, have been landed in Egypt, where under mild climatic conditions, they will complete their training and escape the rigours of a winter in the trenches in northern Europe. With the opening of spring, they should be prepared to go to the front. It is however more than likely that they will receive their baptism of fire in repelling the attack of the Turks.
