This month’s front page features the magnificent mural that has been gifted to Gisborne by the management of The Village Shopping Centre. We have watched the continuing refurbishment works at the shopping centre over the past months but the creation of the mural on the Robertson Street wall with its subtly conveyed global warming message has come as a very pleasant surprise. In the lead-up to Christmas there is so much to enjoy, with the Gisborne Festival and Carols by Candlelight in Gisborne and Macedon as stand-out events for families. For the little ones, the Gisborne CFA fire truck will bring Santa around the neighbourhood to delight them. Another pre-bedtime treat for the kids will be to be taken on a drive around to see the Christmas lights and decorations that magically appear in our local streets. Oh, to be a youngster again! And so the Gazette winds down another year with many thanks to our advertisers and sponsors who continue to finance our publication. To our distributors, thank you for tirelessly getting the paper into your neighbours’ letter boxes each month, and to our reporters and columnists, thanks for filling the Gazette each month with your good news. Julian Clavijo is an internationally renowned artist, born in Colombia and living and working in Melbourne since 2008. A painter and sculptor from a very early age, Julian is interested in transformation of urban spaces and his work – from large public installations to intimate portraits – reflects a keen eye for colour, pattern and realism. Julian has painted several huge public murals in Melbourne, including the mural depicting joyful Julian in his children on the well-known Nylex studio silos in Richmond. He was commissioned by the management of Gisborne Village Shopping Centre to create the mural now gracing the Robertson Street wall, ably assisted by his fellow artist known professionally as Refuz.

Festival fun on December 13 The Gisborne Festival will be held on Friday December 13 from 4.30pm to 9.30pm. From 4.30pm on Gardiner Reserve there will be bands playing, free children’s activities, family entertainment, carnival rides and market and food stalls. The free children’s activities include a jumping castle, animal farm, face painting, henna tattoos, face make-up (for mums too), hair braiding and sparkles, miniature railway and junior sporting activities. A major attraction will be a Monster Truck. The street parade starts at 6pm and will include community groups, Monster truck: one of the features at this Maryborough Pipe Band, Stilt Walk- year's festival. er, a Monster Ball, Bendigo Chinese Lions and, of course, Santa. The Scania medium pumper will replace our Isuzu type 3 light pumper which has served the Gisborne community for around 13 years. Pumpers are designed for an urban environment including house fires, car accidents and gas leaks, to name a few. The new truck will allow firefighters to respond to fires and incidents more efficiently. Firefighters have undergone training over the past few months in the use of the vehicle and it is now commissioned and operational. It carries 2500 litres of water and has a pumping capacity of up to 4000 litres per minute. It has breathing apparatus stowed in the rear seats for rapid deployment, a light mast for scene lighting and other new equipment stowed throughout the truck. Bevan Moody 3rd Lieutenant

Carols by Candlelight Gisborne Carols by Candlelight will be held on Sunday, December 8 at 7pm at Dixon Field. Pre-entertainment by Jimmy & Paige will start at 6pm. There will be a sausage sizzle, ice cream vans, coffee van, candles and glow sticks for sale. Come along and listen to the choirs from the local primary schools as well as the Young Voices of Macedon and join in the singing of carols with the Carols by Candlelight Choir. Come and see who will be awarded the Bendigo Bank Local Hero for services to our community over many years. We look forward to seeing you there. No guarantee of water supply in bushfires, Western Water warns Western Water is warning customers in the Macedon Ranges that they should not rely on their mains water supply if there is a bushfire in the region. The water utility also says large bushfires in the region could affect the quality of its drinking water. The manager of community relations, Graham Holt, says that during and after a serious bushfire it is recommended that you boil your drinking water until Western Water confirms it is safe to drink. Western Water works closely with the CFA and has prepared staff and networks for extreme conditions. Mr Holt says residents can also help the community to be prepared for fire season by ‘adopting’ a fire hydrant. You can help by keeping fire hydrants near your home free of debris and vegetation. If residents think a hydrant needs maintenance, they can contact Western Water by calling 1300 650 422. Residents are advised to plan ahead and consult the CFA for information on preparing for a bushfire and recommendations for an independent water supply. Update on progress of works at heritage-listed Macedon House All items in a Heritage Works order issued last year by the State Government have now been completed at Macedon House. This was mainly relating to the underpinning of the property to prevent further deterioration as well as other items relating to that, and securing the property. The order has now been removed. Two planning applications have been lodged. Firstly to the State Government, which has subsequently been through public advertising. We are currently working with the government to take into account comments from submitters as well as feedback from the state and hopefully we will be able to work our way through to a suitable approval for all parties in the coming months.
Secondly to Council. This approval is required for both the Heritage-listed land and the balance of the parcel. Unfortunately this has not progressed very far to date so all works on site have now stopped. We have also been working with Regional Roads Victoria who have been helpful in coordinating where they are heading with the intersection upgrade at Hamilton/Kilmore Road. The property has also recently sustained some more vandalism, so it would be appreciated if anyone sees that occurring to contact police. We hope to provide another update in a few months. Troy Daffy
Free Christmas Toy Shop needs donations For the past nine years the Churches of the Macedon Ranges have organised a free Christmas ‘Toy Shop’ for families in the shire who might struggle to afford a Christmas gift for their child. The Toy Shop relies completely on the generosity of our community to donate gifts to stock the shop. Families are referred to us by local support and welfare agencies and are given a personal invitation to attend the shop and pick out toys for their children; there is no cost to the families for these gifts. We also offer gift wrapping and a café-style space to enjoy free tea and coffee and homebaked goodies. For families who are facing challenging times, Christmas can become an incredibly stressful, lonely and sad season. The Toy Shop gives these families the opportunity to choose something special for their child and be able to give it to them on Christmas morning. We need your donations to make this important initiative possible. We require donations of toys for children aged 0-18. Gifts need to be new and valued around $20. We also welcome donations of books, plush toys, $20 food-only vouchers and smaller items that would be suitable as stocking fillers. We particularly fall short in gifts for older children each year. Donations can be dropped into the offices of Cobaw Community Health in Woodend, Kyneton or Romsey or contact Georgina Harvey on 0404 442 891 directly to arrange pick up of donations. Gifts need to be received by Wednesday December 11 to allow time for sorting and setting up of the toy shop.

'Laps for Lachy' mental health awareness day Local Mum Melanie Jorgensen is raising money for and creating conversations around mental health, after her 15-year-old son Lachlan took his own life in 2017. On Sunday December 1 Mel is hosting the second Laps for Lachy Mental Health Awareness Day where the community completes as many laps around Tony Clarke oval in Macedon as possible in two hours. She will be hosting local services that support mental health and wellbeing, including massage on the day and access to local professionals. All money will be invested in sending young people to a group session at Path of the Horse – an equine therapy program

An interfaith event held at the Three Little Pigs cafe in October was well supported by a substantial crowd. They came to understand more about interfaith relations because our society, being multicultural, is increasingly multifaith. The Gisborne Uniting Church is presenting such evenings which are designed to explore issues that are of relevance to our community. The first one was on Voluntary Assisted Dying. It is planned that further such evenings will be offered next year, focusing on matters of wide interest. The aim of these meetings is to increase understanding of such matters. The meetings are structured so that antagonistic debate or partisanship is not encouraged. The Church does not push any agenda apart from an openness to engaging in understanding diverse views. With these aims in mind the speakers are always experts in their field. The first speaker in October was Dr Julie Rudner of La Trobe University who spoke about multifaith in Bendigo. She explored reasons for diverse community views and of ways by which mutual understanding and reconciliation can happen. Ms April Kailah, a community worker with Uniting Church, spoke of her engagement with such groups and ways to ensure social harmony prevailed. A lively question time followed. Watch for our next community discussion next May and be assured these evenings are open to the whole community.

The Gisborne & District Community Bank Branch awarded funding to 13 community groups on November 18, representing total new community investment by the branch in our community of $48,350. The largest grants went to The Gisborne Singers for portable choir risers and storage trailer and to Macedon Cricket Club towards their contribution to the redevelopment of cricket nets project at Tony Clarke Reserve. Chairman Graham Stewart said the volunteer board of directors of the local public company that operates the branch was proud to be delivering once again on its promise of returning local profits to the community. Swim for Live4Life an outstanding success Around 200 swimmers dived into the pools at Gisborne and Kyneton Aquatic Centres on November 10 to swim sponsored laps in an effort to support suicide prevention initiatives championed by Live4Life. More than $5000 was raised. Special mention must be made of seven-year-old Elliot who swam 80 laps, beating his record last year of 50 laps. The total laps swum at both pools was 9100. An amazing effort. A big thankyou to all the volunteers: lap counters, barbecue crews, Gisborne Gourmet Meats, Jellis Craig, Shout out Loud, Gisborne and Kyneton Aquatic Centres and all the swimmers — an amazing effort by our Macedon Ranges community; thank you everyone! Vision Australia friends raise $6000 for the year From our fundraising efforts and donations received throughout the year, the Gisborne Friends of Vision Australia have raised an incredible $6,000. These funds help to provide vital services and opportunities for adults and children who are blind or have low vision, enabling them to live independent lives. In October a successful raffle with five prize winners was held at the Gisborne Village Shopping Centre. Twenty-five of our members were rostered to sell raffle tickets and large print calendars, which are still available from the Secretary priced at $15 each. We especially thank IGA for their valued support towards the raffle. We will have a break now from activities until the new year, with our first meeting on Tuesday, February 25. Open Day at Gisborne CFA On November 10 the Gisborne Fire Brigade held its annual station open day. The day is an opportunity for people to tour the station, inspect our fleet of vehicles, view equipment on display and to meet our firefighters. There were plenty of activities to keep the kids occupied while parents and adults brushed up on fire safety information leading into this year’s fire danger period. Community Safety Coordinator Dawn Whittall said she was very pleased with the number of people who came through. “It was great to meet so many people in our community," she said. "It’s a fantastic opportunity to give fire safety advice as well as to showcase what we do in the community. The open day was a perfect opportunity to show the Gisborne community various other emergency response capabilities our firefighters are qualified in." Bevan Moody 3rd Lieutenant

Rotarians ‘Lift the Lid on mental illness’ Rotary Club of Macedon Ranges members are on a mission to ‘Lift the Lid on mental illness’ by raising money for mental health research. The club has had a successful fundraising event at Baringo Food and Wine Co where nearly $400 was raised. Macedon CWA update Now that the festive season is upon us, we wish all readers peace and joy at Christmas. We would like to thank all who supported us over 2019. We have had a busy year, and received great pleasure meeting members of the public. Some of the highlights included attending the International Associated Country Women’s conference, held in Melbourne. The Kyneton Daffodil Festival was a great success, and there were many opportunities to meet a diversity of people. As we head into summer, we hope you will enjoy the season’s bounty. Friends of East Timor wrapup of activities Macedon Ranges Friends of East Timor (MRFoET) recently conducted their AGM to review events Ranges of the past year, and plan ahead Macedon Friends of East Timor for next year’s activities and visit to our supported community in Turiscai, Timor-Leste. The committee warmly welcomed Cr Jennifer Anderson and Council Community Partnerships Officer Stephen Hiley to our meeting, and passed on our appreciation to Macedon Ranges Shire Council for its ongoing partnership and support. Major initiatives conducted during the year included the donation of two laptops to the Turiscai Senior Secondary School, as well as sports uniforms. MR FoET also distributed mobility walkers to a number of less mobile elderly Timorese, as well as delivering more than 90 'Days for Girls' hygiene kits. We assisted with funding for a health and nutrition workshop in Turiscai that proved to be very popular. The President and Committee members thank all members and supporters for their generous support throughout the year. We also thank the Editor and team at the Gisborne Gazette for their support. the Local choir The Gisborne Gisborne Singers finished the year with two successful concerts featuring British composers, John Rutter and Benjamin Britten. The choir, joined by soloists, a terrific children’s choir, and orchestra including harp, sang three Rutter anthems and his Mass of the Children. Also performed was Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, accompanied by Laura Tanata on harp. The choir also performed at the Gisborne Gazette reception for contributors and volunteers. Carol singing at nursing homes finished a very rewarding year for the choir. The program for 2020 includes The Armed Man by Sir Karl Jenkins in May and favourite Handel’s Messiah in November. A small group from the choir will be jetting off to New York in January to perform The Armed Man at Carnegie Hall. As always the choir is looking for new members, especially tenors and basses. The choir is a well organised, friendly and welcoming group led by musical director Stephen Brockman. Stephen brings the best out of the choristers by insistence on getting the music right in an enjoyable and supportive atmosphere. Review Macedon Music finale for 2019 Macedon Music hosted the final concert for the year at Lowlands Farm on November 10 featuring two members of the Streeton Trio, Emma Jardine (violin) and Benjamin Kopp (piano) Commencing with Lutoslawski’s Subito, the duo established an excellent rapport with the audience. Commissioned for the 1992 Indianapolis International Violin competition, Subito varied much in dynamic, tempo and timbre, and was beautifully mastered. Grieg’s Violin Sonata No 3 in C minor (1887), was written as a substantive work of chamber music. Emma’s tension-free technique for the violin brought to life the full range of the composition. The deep and rich accompaniment of Grieg provided a rich tapestry of sound. Poème Élégiaque by Belgian violinist Eugene Ysaÿe illustrated why he attracted the title “King of the Violin”. The Elegy required alternate tuning for the violin, adding to the challenge of performance. As the Elegy ended, the chamber was left in silence — too spellbound to break the well-woven depth of reflection. César Franck’s Sonata in A for Violin and Piano closed the afternoon with a feverishly beautiful but virtuosic final movement executed almost to perfection. It was a good way for Macedon Music to finish their 25th year, with two outstanding musicians.

Resonance String Orchestra: You get to vote for favourite performer
'Tis the season for festivities (and fireworks) Many of us look forward to sharing festive season, New Year and Australia Day celebrations and fireworks with our family and friends. Top Tip for great fireworks images: scout the best viewing spots ahead of time, think about incorporating water reflections or interesting skylines, arrive early to get settled, check “Mr Google” for ideal camera settings and for “clean” pictures, shoot early before the smoke haze builds. Recently, the Macedon Ranges Photographic Society nearly achieved the hat-trick in our annual Quad Competition with Bendigo, Castlemaine and Goldfields photographic clubs. Unfortunately we were pipped at the post by Bendigo, so congratulations to our northern colleagues. We’ll be back next year!

A busy schedule of October and November outings and workshops was enjoyed by a growing club membership. In 2020 we will launch our new syllabus of club activities, training and events as well as relocating our monthly meetings across the road to the more spacious Riddells Creek Community Centre. Next club meeting is Saturday December 7 with our end of year gathering (BYO food and drink for 6pm) and competition (at 7.30pm) at Riddell Neighbourhood House. On Monday December 2, nine local undiscovered vocal talents will perform with the Resonance String Orchestra and a backing band comprised of some of the region's finest musicians. International hits will be performed as contestants compete to win the attention of the event's judges, Opera Australia's Tiffany Speight and local music education specialist Joseph Bromley. The audience will also vote for their favourite performer on the night. The project aims to provide experiences for social and community connection for residents aged 55 and over in Macedon Ranges Shire. The engagement of older local residents with the mixed-age Resonance String Orchestra builds on our work to draw adults into community music-making, and provide a forum for intergenerational connection. The project has involved performances with the singers and musicians at BUPA Aged Care Woodend and Woodend Farmers Market. Mount Players launch new productions and wind up 2019 The 2020 season for The Mount Players was launched at the Mountview Theatre on October 25. Directors presented their chosen shows to the members and sponsors of the theatre. A diverse range of plays promises to appeal to a broad audience. The Mount Players' final production, The Graduate, was a wonderful success with a near sell-out season. Audiences loved it and we have had tremendous feedback on the standard of our actors and the creative set. Thanks to director Robert Wallace for bringing this iconic play to life on our stage. This year our Youth Theatre will be staging their productions across two weekends. On December 6, 7 and 8 The Trap by Stephen Gregg will be performed by our 16-21 years group, and on December 13, 14 and 15 The Golden Medallion by Keith Passmore will be performed by our 10-15 years group. These shows are a fantastic opportunity to come along to as a family and enjoy the super talent our youth theatre boasts. Our first production for 2020, Switzerland by Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith, has been cast and is already in rehearsal. This two-handed metaphysical thriller set in the Swiss Alps at the secluded home of author Patricia Highsmith opens on February 28. Santa will be riding the fire truck around the streets starting at 12 noon in the New Gisborne area. We will also be giving live updates of Santa’s location on Christmas Eve. DISTRIBUTOR'S COLUMN Debra Johnston and her husband, Gary, decided to buy the subdivided land next door to her parents in Gisborne, so she could look after them later in life. In 2008, they built their dream home on three acres with a wooden frame and straw bales, tied with wires, treated with lime and then rendered, all complete with a galvanised roof. They've kept a sample of the straw construction to show interested visitors (pictured below left). They have two cats – George is 11 and Essie 7. Debra is a registered nurse and has been studying psychology at Deakin University. Her interests include family history, having found her three-times-great-grandmother and three-timesgreat-grandfather buried in an unmarked grave in Creswick. Along with her father and a stonemason in Ballarat, they have been able to mark the graves with a headstone. She also enjoys gardening, cross stitch and knitting coats for the fairy penguins that live on Phillip Island and donating to animal charities. Debra has been delivering the Gazette to homes in Gisborne since 2016 and is pleased she is giving back to the community. She hopes Gisborne will continue to have a village feel to it even though it is expanding at a rapid rate.
This year’s reception was held at the Gisborne Golf Club on November 22 with more than 100 people in attendance. The annual reception is a time to congratulate and thank the many volunteers who distribute, sponsor and regularly report for the paper. Led by the Distribution Manager, Maxine Barker, a small team organised a very successful function at which guests were wined and dined as well as being entertained by the marvellous Gisborne Singers. Five-year certificates of appreciation were awarded to distributors Maxine and Peter Barker, Dom Cafari, Anne Ciesielski, Beverley Durham and Keith Hallett while 10-year certificates went to distributors Debbie Fleming, Noel and Betty Hemphill, Cheryl Millard, Lucy and Italo Padovani, Corinne Shaddock, Vicki and Emily Thompson and Richard Whiteley, and to regular reporters Debbie Fleming, Kellie McDonald and Graeme Millar.

Where has this year gone! We have had a huge year with lots of fun activities in the library. His secret's out: It's all to do with frogs Time to let the cat out of the bag, or at least the frog imitation fly onto the water. I began a journey fly fishing for Murray Cod on fly with few satisfactory flies on the market. They were either on inappropriate hooks, or did not imitate Murray Cod food. Researching cod food took me along rivers at night time where I saw large frogs, spiders, and mice; but only frogs really ventured into the water regularly. So, the fly had to look like a frog, make a good splashdown in the water, with back legs moving like a frog’s legs did when it swam. I tied and tried flies and when I was happy with them, I gave some away to friends to try. Their success was not instant, some had to learn to strip strike to set the hook. Club member Chris tried some and caught two Murray Cod off the surface the first time he used the fly; Simon missed one on the same trip. Then Chris invited Scott along on his next outing with spectacular results. The holy grail of Murray Cod, a metre-plus Murray Cod, was hooked by Scott and landed off the surface using my “Cod Popper”. Fly fishing for me is a journey filled with life experiences shared with good friends, a lot of whom are members of our great club. In October a pup dropped out of the sky into a back yard in Wandiligong, north-eastern Victoria. It turned out to be a rare alpine dingo and judging by marks on the pup's back, it had been taken (and dropped) by an eagle. The pup (pictured) was rescued by the homeowner and taken to a vet, and has now been transferred to the Dingo Sanctuary at Toolern Vale.

Recently the Red Cross Singers celebrated 30 years of visiting residents at The Gisborne Oaks and regularly delivering music therapy. Every month more than 40 residents attend this event, which brings such joy to their lives. We are so grateful to have such wonderful people volunteering at Macedon Ranges Health and we thank all the volunteers involved. A special thanks also goes to Jean Dixon who has been volunteering in this group since 1989, and Frances Wearne who has been volunteering since 1994. Thank you so much for such an amazing effort!
Thank you to our customers at the Cottage Op Shop at 80 Hamilton Street for your many and varied donations and purchases during the year. Our volunteers will be having a much deserved rest and will be closing the shop on December 19 at 4pm. It means we will be ready to welcome lots of donations following those post-Christmas clear outs. The shop reopens Monday January 6, operating from 9.30am to midday for that week. 20 years at TOWN Gisborne On November 11, the Gisborne TOWN (Take Off Weight Naturally) Club celebrated its 20th year. The club has gone through many changes but what has always stayed the same is that it is a weight loss club run by volunteers in a supportive and encouraging environment where we all strive together to attain a healthy lifestyle. The anniversary was celebrated by 30 present and past members including seven members from its first few years, some of whom are still in the club. It was a wonderful celebration and catch-up. The Gisborne TOWN club will take a short break over Christmas, our last meeting for 2019 being on December 16, and will return on January 6. We wish everyone a joyous and peaceful Christmas and New Year and thank everyone in our community for their support over the past year. Screen time for children A new study has found that pre-school-aged children had lower levels of white matter in their brains the more they deviated from professional recommendations on screen time. White matter is the type of brain matter that supports language, literacy and cognitive skills, and develops most rapidly in early childhood. Screen exposure may not be directly causing harm but rather taking time from activities that would help with brain development. Some helpful tips for families to consider include: Treat media as you would any other environment in your child’s life – set limits. Unstructured and offline play stimulates creativity so make it a daily priority. Playing a video game with your kids encourages social interactions, bonding and learning: a good way to demonstrate sportsmanship and gaming etiquette. Keep family mealtimes, social gatherings, and children’s bedrooms screen free. Organisations like Common Sense Media (www. commonsensemedia.org) provide guidance about apps, games and programs for your children.

With Betty Doolan I’m pretty excited to tell you where I have been. It was a Saturday afternoon Spring Fair in Errol Street, North Melbourne. The fair was being held in the lanes of Errol Street and we started between the Town Hall and Library. Police had a stall along with many more selling all sorts of things. There was a group doing folk dancing dressed in lovely costumes with small bells on sticks and as they jumped to the music they hit these sticks against their shoes, while we stopped to watch them. We were enjoying ourselves when a man stopped the group to let us pass. I was embarrassed so I said “I would love to have joined them but I haven’t brought my bells”. The wide cobblestone lanes were between factories in days long gone now. I might add that it was freezing cold. A drum started up when three young ladies dressed like Las Vegas show girls with lots of feathers and little else danced up and down the lanes. All along Errol Street were tables with white table cloths and takeaway food. We went to a small café for lunch — all the years I never knew about these lanes. We decided to walk to the Vic Market and on the way we passed St Mary’s Star of the Sea Church. My Mum and Dad were married there nearly 100 years ago. The market has changed since I went many years ago but I thoroughly enjoyed it and I will go again. Well it’s the time of the year that I thank you all for, I hope, enjoying this column. Maintaining your health and wellbeing over the festive season A column on general health by local resident Julie Ireland

Compliments of the Season from the Men's Shed Is there a male in your life who would benefit from some extra community contact? They don’t have to be over retirement age. They might just be between jobs with a bit of time on their hands. The Men's Shed has members of all ages, from 15 to over 90. The last Monday of every month (except December), the Shed runs a lunchtime barbecue open to the public — men and women — (for a gold coin donation). Perhaps that could be the ideal opportunity to bring or send that male to our Shed to see what we’re all about.
We’ll explain how they don’t have to use tools if they don’t want to or that we can teach them how to use them if they don’t already know. We’ll also explain how every morning starts with a cuppa and a chat and for some, that lasts until lunchtime! The only work they must do is wash their cup after using it. We’re open every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 12 midday. Why not make it a New Year’s resolution to pop in and see us? We might just surprise you.
Every year I look forward to the festive season when I can take extended leave from work (usually six weeks). I always have the best intentions to get more exercise, eat healthily and try not to stress about Christmas and all that it entails. I have visions of actually finishing a book by the pool at an island resort, sipping a cocktail… but that ain’t gonna happen! Sadly, the reality is very different to my expectations. By about day three of my holidays (if I make it that far), my good intentions have flown out the window and I am starting to hyperventilate at the thought of everything that I have to get done! Sound familiar? Fear not dear friends, I’ve got a few tips that may help you survive the festive season while maintaining your health and wellbeing. The first tip is to take a deep breath! Planning is paramount so start by making a list of what needs to be done. If there is no way you are going to be able to do something, leave it off the list. Be strong, you can do without it! You can’t do everything so accept that not everything has to be perfect. Remember the old saying, ‘perfection is the enemy of progress’. Be realistic! Try to keep a handle on your budget. Get creative with gift giving. It’s OK to splurge. Let’s face it, you’ve worked hard over the last year, but don’t let overspending cause you more stress. Appreciate the simple things at this time of year. Be kind to yourself. Get enough sleep, make time to exercise and take some time to relax. This is also the time of year to regroup for the new year ahead, so take advantage of the down time. Finally, make sure that you check in with friends and family and the older members of our community. The festive season can be a lonely time for many people and someone’s mental health and wellbeing is not always obvious on the outside. Take care of yourselves everyone. Julie

FOR THE GREEN THUMBS Garden Club winding down successful year Another enjoyable meeting of members and friends was held at an extensive and interesting garden in Gisborne where well over 50 members and friends enjoyed two hours of bliss, wandering among the flower beds, courtyard and paths, admiring the extensive views to the south-west over manicured lawns and native hedge plants. The weather was kind, as was the social atmosphere among friends who delighted in a sumptuous afternoon tea and donated plants generously provided by a number of members for the enjoyment of all. Special mention must be made of the effort put in by the owners in preparing their garden for our visit.
It was greatly appreciated by all who visited. This was the last garden visit before Christmas and we are all looking forward to Christmas lunch at the Masonic Hall in Gisborne on December 11. The program for 2020, to be handed out at the Christmas lunch, will kick off with a visit to another member’s garden on Wednesday February 12. The Gisborne Garden Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month (except January) between 1pm and 3pm and visitors are always welcome to come along. Open Gardens Victoria will open a garden designer’s inspirational garden where ornamental and productive plants are blended in a relaxed country style. ‘Melrose’ is a circa-1860s bluestone cottage where garden designer Deborah Hambleton has transformed a former horse paddock into a garden sanctuary with a mix of styles and elements. There is formality and symmetry, some romance and wildness, ornamental plants mingle with productive plants including pistachios, mulberry, and quince. Local recycled materials and artefacts from overseas add a sense of character throughout. We’ve had a very productive year and made new friends who have joined our team of volunteers at our monthly working bees. When we are weeding, observing and photographing the area, we often meet people walking through the Reserve who encourage us in our work. As reported through the year, we have worked with 1st Gisborne Scouts and Gisborne Primary School and hope to continue these associations. The youngsters are very environmentally aware, which has led to interesting exchanges of information during our nature walks. The council’s Bush Reserves Officer has been a ‘hand’s-on’ attendee at working bees, offering advice, workshopping and drawing up future plans. Our final working bee for this year will be on Tuesday December 10, 9.30am-till 11’ish. Come and join us if you can spare the time. Of square poo and disturbed mulch... This past month the Friends of Gisborne Botanic Gardens have been focused on some of the fauna that use the Botanic Gardens — and that doesn't just mean the dog-walkers and their friends! Many of you will know about the wombat and maybe even the echidna that call these gardens home. The evidence is clear if you know what to look for — square poo and disturbed mulch and soil in the garden beds close to Jacksons Creek. But what of other species? The Friends group used two of their regular working bees in October to identify the birds and frogs that use the gardens. The bird ID was done as part of the Aussie Backyard Bird Count during the week October 21-27 and the frog ID as part of Melbourne Water’s Frog Census. This latter activity is the first step in our aim to establish a long-term monitoring program for frogs in the Gisborne Botanic Gardens. As we work on clearing weeds and restoring the health of the water boundaries of the gardens we hope to see an increase in the diversity of fauna engaging with the flora of the gardens. New growth in the garden

Meet Ernie, the fig tree. Ernie arrived at New Gisborne Community Garden earlier this year and was planted next to our other fig tree (who shall remain nameless), to encourage him and hopefully to increase our fruit supply for jam making in the summer. We are delighted to see the new growth – that one large leaf waving in the breeze – it fills us with hope and anticipation for a future blessing. That’s one of the greatest joys of gardening: planting seeds and cuttings and watching them grow into fully productive plants that give us fresh and healthy produce that we can share with our community. Ernie was donated by a member of our community and has been named in his honour. Come along on Wednesdays from 9.30am to check him out (the tree, that is) and to join in the fun in working in the garden. There’s room for everyone and you are all welcome. The Macedon Ranges Shire Council is carrying out restoration on Gisborne Court House, Jail and Stables which are the home of the Gisborne & Mount Macedon Districts Historical Society. The works include but are not limited to the following: Court House: Replacement of guttering, repair of the slate roof, maintenance of internal and external doors, support columns and down pipes on the front veranda, painting of the exterior and eradication of elm beetles in the ceiling. Maintenance issues relating to gas heating and the alarm systems have been carried out. Jail: The roof structure and fascia on the north side of the jail have been replaced. Repair of the slate roof and other internal works are yet to commence. Stables: Repairs to the ceiling and new access to the east via the south wall will be carried out in the near future. The society is looking forward to the works being completed which will enhance all three buildings.
Birds of Macedon Ranges This beautiful photo of two tawny frogmouths was captured by Mt Macedon resident Barry Mullen a couple of Decembers ago when he found them beside his driveway off Zig Zag Road. Barry recalls that he was particularly pleased that the photograph was admired by the late Ron Weste as one of the photos "he (Ron) would have loved to have taken". Tawny frogmouths are night birds but can sometimes be found in the daytime, as in this photo, where you can see their distinctive yellow eyes. Sometimes they can be found perching without moving, giving the impression that they are a tree branch.

Hamilton Esq. took the Chair, Messrs Hussey and Dixon occupying the vice-chairs." The following original poem signed by James Stanley Carmichael 1867, has recently been donated to the Historical Society archives and celebrates the above match.

Looking scary was fun at the Guides Halloween night.
Guides get into the Halloween spirit Gisborne Lightning Guides celebrated Halloween by organising a variety of activities around the theme of ‘Harry Potter’, the books and films of this series still being of interest to many of our members. Some of the activities included creating our own version of quiddich, making wands and creating potions. Many girls earned their Emergency badge by discussing what they would do in various scenarios and learning first aid procedures. We are currently working on the Girls badge discussing issues related to girls around the world. Guiding encourages females to advocate for a better world for all. We will finish off the year with our annual Christmas party then will take a break until February next year. If you are aged 8 or older and would like to try Girl Guides in 2020 or are interested in helping in the Unit, please give Deb a call on 0409 542 619. 1st Gisborne patrol group takes Cohen Shield Cohen Shield is a competitive patrol activity for Scouts held at a number of locations throughout Victoria at which patrols compete in five Scoutcraft activities. They were assessed on Navigation, Construction, First-Aid, Cooking and Environmental knowledge and skills.

When we arrived on November 2 we set up camp at Borough Huts campground and prepared for our hike. Over three days we would walk two parts of the Grampians Peak Trail and do some other walking around to travel a total of 30 kilometres. On Day 1, after we had set up camp, we explored the river running through the camping ground. During that day, and our whole camp in general, we saw loads of wildlife including emus, ducklings, lizards, eagles and even a bee swarm — which we steered clear of. On the second day, we drove to Mount Rosea car park and hiked up to the peak then continued to our campground. The views on this walk were definitely worth the effort of walking up more than 350 metres in elevation then going down over 600m. On the third and final day of our adventure, we packed up camp and headed off on the track towards Halls Gap. This day was surprisingly challenging, walking along a fire track that just kept going up and down. We made it to Halls Gap in about three and a half hours and were all happy to get some lunch and head home.

New Gisborne’s Year Two campers Last month all the Year Two students from New Gisborne Primary School went to Lady Northcote YMCA Camp in Bacchus Marsh. We spent two days and one night there. We had lots of fun doing our activities. The activities were the giant swing, canoeing, yabbying, archery and last but not least, bush cooking. Some of us were a little nervous at first but we took on the challenges and faced our fears. The food at camp was delicious. We had spaghetti bolognaise, carbonara and vegetarian pasta. We also had ice cream. We had the best time Emily, Year 2 and were sad to leave. reporter

United Nations Day at Montessori
Senior students enjoy Socktober celebrations.
Sunshine, socks and soccer at St Brigid's The Mini Vinnie committee organised the annual Socktober celebration on October 18. The students were required to wear a pair of crazy socks, donate some preloved socks and donate a gold coin. As a result of the coin donations, we raised $149 and the money went towards Catholic Missions. Near the end of the day the entire school had an assembly regarding the history and meaning of Socktober.
Afterwards, in our classrooms the students collaborated and made a sock ball which they took outside to play soccer with. The sock ball was made out of recycled items such as plastic bags, donated socks, bubble wrap, t-shirts and rope. The fundraiser was a great success and we all enjoyed wearing crazy socks for a good cause. By Lucie Cousins, Grade 6
Healthy breakfast for all at Gisborne Primary On October 30 Gisborne Primary School held a healthy breakfast to celebrate the end of ‘Walk to School’ month. There were lots of scrumptious options to choose from and some nice cold drinks as well. Later that day was the annual walkathon. The year twos and under ran around the oval whilst the upper levels of the school ran around the outside of the school. At the end the children that ran the most laps were awarded a certificate and a choice of many prizes such as a scooter, a bike helmet, knee and shoulder pads, a Hoyts $50 gift card, drink bottle, rain coat and much more. On November 24, Gisborne Montessori School hosted three other schools for GISBORNE United Nations Day. MONTESSORI SCHOOL The Montessori Model United Nations Day is held annually overseas, with delegates coming from around the globe to present and find solutions to global and local issues within developing countries. This year, it was decided that we would hold a local United Nations event. A total of 130 students from Melbourne Montessori, Mitcham Primary and Plenty Valley International school arrived in busloads to join Gisborne Montessori in what proved to be a memorable day. The children first displayed their research around the hall before a welcome to country and flag ceremony was held. The committee sessions were made up of groups discussing their research findings. Our keynote speaker, Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas, shared her thoughts about the significance of this event, after which speeches were made by the children, highlighting the problems and solutions of countries from around the world. Mary-Anne was most impressed by the quality of the speeches and has since mentioned this event, along with the speakers, in an address in Parliament. The day was very special and memorable for the children. We look forward to the 2020 United Nations Day.

An accessible Changing Places facility and two unisex public toilets at Jacksons Creek Reserve in Gisborne are now available for public use. The new facility is within easy access of the Gisborne Aquatic Centre and the reserve’s adventure playground. Changing Places facilities are larger than standard accessible toilets, and have extra features and more space to meet the needs of people with a disability and their carers. The facility can be accessed with an MLAK (Master Locksmiths Access Key). This type of key enables entry 24 hours a day, seven days a week to certain toilet facilities across Australia. An MLAK key can be obtained through Master Locksmiths Australia (masterlocksmiths.com.au/mlak). People who do not have a key and wish to use the Changing Places facility will be able to obtain a key at the Gisborne Aquatic Centre during opening hours. The project was jointly funded by Council ($150,000) and a Victorian Government grant ($100,000).

A Gisborne dog breeder has been fined $7000 and banned from keeping or selling dogs for 10 years following court action taken by Macedon Ranges Shire Council. The case involved charges from June 2016 to March 2018 in relation to an unregistered dog business. It was mainly whippets being bred, reared and sold at the property. Council officers attended the property several times and observed up to 20 whippet and pharoah-houndtype dogs housed in collapsible wire cages. Twelve charges relating to breaches of local law, the Domestic Animals Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act were issued. All charges were proven with conviction in Kyneton Magistrate’s Court, and the breeder was ordered to pay a portion of Council’s legal costs.

There is a lot of work being done to protect the health of our waterways. Council is working on Integrated Water Management in the south of the shire which is part of the Maribyrnong Catchment. This is a collaboration between many council departments, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), Melbourne Water, Western Water and consultants. Melbourne Water’s Healthy Waterways Strategy was recently completed; monitoring and implementing this strategy is now progressing. I am looking forward to a brighter future for our precious waterways. I would like to acknowledge the younger members of our community, who are doing great things for the natural environment. I have been impressed with their caring attitude and knowledge of environmental, sustainability and biodiversity issues including topics such as animal habitat and waste. US experience good example to follow I was lucky enough to spend some time in the US recently. It was the end of the summer and on the wide flat streets of a seaside town, many people rode or walked everywhere. It was holiday time for most people and the mood was relaxed. As a result, all road users just learnt to get along safely and it worked! Bike Safe Macedon Ranges has just launched our ‘Share with Care’ campaign aimed at encouraging all road users to be careful when interacting with other vehicles on the road. It’s simply about leaving plenty of room and time to pass safely. It’s particularly relevant to new users of our country roads which present different challenges to the urban environment. Who knows what is around that corner? All it takes is a little impatience or lack of concentration and someone’s dad or mum, brother or sister, son or daughter could end up in hospital or worse. Nobody wants that kind of outcome. Look out for the mobile trailer and banners across the Ranges to remind people of this simple message. OBITUARY Neville John Smith 1952 – 2019 Born in Woodend on July 6, 1952, Neville was the third of four children to Neville and Eva Smith. He had two older sisters, Valerie and Yvonne, and had a younger brother Ian, better known as Percy. The family lived in Gisborne and Neville attended the New Gisborne Primary School, Sunbury High School and later completed a degree in Engineering at RMIT. Following this, his first position was with mining company Metals X. He played football well into adulthood and was a three-time premiership player for Gisborne. He worked to support himself through his study by hay carting with Mick Deverall. In 1975, Neville worked in the mining sector in Kalgoorlie, WA. He enjoyed the outback and the social life of the mining town, but not so much working underground. After a couple of years in WA, Neville returned to Gisborne and soon after he met local girl, Leanne Edwards. They married in June 1979 at St Paul’s, Gisborne. Their first home was a little cottage at the
OBITUARY Michael Albert Martin 1949 – 2019 Michael was born on 29 March,1949, in Cape Town, South Africa. From age 4 to 8, he lived in England. It was in Southhampton that his brother Richard was born. After returning to Cape Town, Michael began his long association in the Church. He was a choirboy, then an altar boy and then a server at St Paul’s Rondebosch, a traditional Anglican community of more than 180 years' standing. There he was privileged to serve Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and to meet the love of his life, his fellow server, Alison. They married in 1981, not long after Michael had graduated from the Technical College with a Diploma of Business Management. Three daughters, Monique, Kira and Greer were born, interestingly all in January. Over the next few years, Michael immersed himself in family life, music, band and teaching at home. In 2001, the family moved to New Zealand where they lived for 11 years and in 2012 they moved to Melbourne.

The family enjoyed many camping and fishing weekends, Christmas holidays in Tocumwal, and in their camper trailer in 1999 they travelled around Australia. Neville and Leanne celebrated 40 years of marriage this year. In their early married life Neville worked at the SEC head office in Melbourne. A move to the Shire of Romsey followed in 1985 as Engineer/Planner, then later he was promoted to Assistant Shire Engineer and to Deputy Shire Engineer in 1989. In May 1994, he was promoted to Director of Technical and Planning Services. When the local shires amalgamated to form the Macedon Ranges Shire Council in 1995, Neville gained the position of Group Manager for Resident Services. In 2001, Neville became CEO of the Shire of Melton and finally CEO of Moonee Valley Shire in 2010. Neville and Leanne travelled extensively, to
In 2016 they moved to Riddells Creek and, after three years, to Gisborne. Michael immediately became part of the church community and his sense of duty and devotion saw him involved as a drumMichael Martin mer, volunteer with the CFA, Kyneton Brass Band and Gisborne U3A of which he served as President. Michael was also a volunteer at St Paul’s Op Shop and a member of the Gisborne Anglican Parish Council. His sporting interests included rugby, cricket and tennis. He and Alison travelled extensively including to South Africa, Namibia, England and Canada. For Michael, music was everything. He loved to drum, to teach, to sing. His involvement in the life of the Church around the world was massive. Michael and Alison have three grandchildren, Hayley, Mila and Dakota. Michael passed away on October 9 and a funeral service was held at the Anglican Church of the Resurrection on October 14.

Neville Smith Ireland, Scotland and Europe. They also travelled to New Zealand and went on the Ghan and Indian Pacific trains. Neville was known for his fairness and honesty and was well liked by all. A funeral service was held at the Valley Room, Macedon Ranges Hotel & Spa on October 18.
Gisborne Probus Club The Gisborne Probus Club has had a busy end to the year. Members recently visited the Benetas Nursing Home in Heidelberg, which is similar to the home that will be built in Gisborne in the near future. A tour with plenty of time to ask questions provided an excellent opportunity to find out more about nursing homes. Dawn Smith and Helen Thompson represented the club at the Remembrance Day Service in Gisborne. Helen laid a beautiful hand-crafted wreath of poppies that was made by the craft group. Members of the Gisborne Garden Club joined us on an outing to Musk Farm. A garden tour was followed by lunch at the Daylesford Cidery, ensuring an enjoyable day for all involved. At the November general meeting, The Shed Men from Gisborne Men’s Shed entertained with renditions of many well-known songs. This was the final meeting for the year. Meetings resume on Thursday February 6. The final function for 2019 will be the Christmas Lunch at Gisborne Golf Club on December 5.

Remembering those who have ridden on… On November 11 Macedon Ranges Ulysses Branch (MRUB) joined other motorcycling colleagues on the annual Ulysses Victorian Memorial Ride remembering those Ulysses members who have ridden on during the year. About 100 bikes participated in the run from Centennial Park to the service at Mt Macedon’s Memorial Cross. Our branch lost four valued members in 2019: Christine Cameron, Wilfred Erben, Lucy Freestone and Ron Weste. May they rest in peace. Our next en masse ride will be the annual Christmas Toy Run on Sunday December 15, leaving Sunbury at 9.30am and finishing up near Keilor Park Drive. So join our great club and come

Older folk: Help the shire become more age-friendly Macedon Ranges Shire Council is developing a Positive Ageing Plan, and would like your thoughts on how to make the shire more age-friendly. The council would especially like to hear from residents 65 years and over about their needs, aspirations and priorities and what residents think the council's role should be in supporting ageing people in the community. Many elements contribute to healthy ageing, such as living independently for longer, remaining socially connected and having access to information, services and age-friendly public spaces. The Positive Ageing Plan 2020-2025 will consider all of these factors. It is essential that the shire hears from older people. Community workshops were held in November. You can still submit your ideas via Council's website, www.mrsc.vic.gov.au, or fill in survey forms available at the Gisborne Library or at the council offices in Robertson Street, until December 13.

Remembrance Day in Gisborne Sunny weather saw a good crowd turn out to honour the nation's service men and women at the cenotaph on November 11. RSL President Rob Funston conducted the service and Cr Helen Radnedge gave the address. After the laying of wreaths and the Last Post, Rob
was joined by former naval service woman Carly Prictor in unveiling two plaques bearing the names of WW2 service people who were Gisborne residents at the time of their enlistment as well as the names of those who served in subsequent conflicts.

Kinder year winds down Term four is rushing by for the Swinburne Avenue kinder children, families and staff. With Christmas and the New Year approaching, we have many activities and events to keep everyone busy. The children have enjoyed a number of cooking classes, which were funded by a generous grant from Bendigo Bank. While focusing on sustainability, the children made their own beeswax wraps and enjoy using them for their lunches. The wraps were made from donated fabric and supplies bought with the grant. The children also visited Essendon traffic school where they got to ride their bikes around and learn about road rules. They have also visited the local primary schools in preparation for next year. The Christmas raffle has opened with the main prize being a $1750 photography session voucher with Maple Gallery in Ascot Vale. There are many other prizes to be won as well, so grab your tickets over the coming weeks. The Christmas family picnic will be held on the kindergarten grounds on Friday December 6. The raffle will be drawn on the night and Santa will be dropping by to see the children. The committee wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and hopes the transition to primary school next year is smooth and enjoyable for everyone.
Mount Players win prestigious awards The Mount Players are celebrating a great result achieved at the Victorian Drama League’s Awards on November 24. The Players' performance of 12 Angry Men not only won best production for 2019 but it scooped the entire pool, being named Victorian best drama, best leading actor, best supporting actor, best director and best set. Congratulations to the Players!

Monthly social for LGBTIQ+ adults Cobaw’s Community Health's new Country LGBTIQ+ Inclusion Program (CLIP), is encouraging LGBTIQ+ adults to get together for a cuppa and chat on a monthly basis. Meeting on the third Thursday of every month at 11am, Social@ will offer a regular opportunity for members of the LGBTIQ+ community across the Macedon Ranges to get together and make new connections. Flashback to winter These photos are from the Gisborne Bushwalkers four-day base camp at Falls Creek in early November. The snowy picture was taken on a minus-fourdegree day during a 14-kilometre, up and down trek in the Mt Nelse area – a chilly experience, but so rewarding for the spectacular views over the snow-laden Victorian Alps. The sunnier picture is two days later, taken at the lunch stop at Cope Hut during a 12km walk following the Wallace Hut circuit.

Macedon Ranges Croquet Club
Champion bowlers make their mark
It’s been a busy month at the Croquet Club. On October 28 we welcomed players from Ballarat Western, Maldon, Brimbank, Kyneton, Beaufort and Castlemaine to our Social Day. Terry Brown from Brimbank won the day and Robyn Gould from Ballarat Western was runner up. Over a lovely afternoon tea we all agreed that it had been a great day. Our first in-house tournament was held on November 4 with Gill Punshon the winner. The winners on our dress-up day on Kyneton Cup day were Lesla Handley, the Bookie from the Dodgy Betting Agency and Stablehand Ken Anders. There were many glamorous croquet players in their fascinators and finery who enjoyed two games after the general meeting. Jean Bedwell won the play-off for the aggregate and Beverley Winnell was runner up. It’s been a great Faye Armstrong experience for those who have played pennant this year. Although we won’t make the finals they are already looking forward to next year. Our croquet year will end on December 11 with our Christmas Lunch. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Congratulations to Gisborne bowler Kevin Jarred who on November 7 won the Central Highlands Bowls Division over 60s singles competition. Kevin played extremely well on the final day, defeating Kyneton player Wayne Turner in the semi-final with a score of 21 to 10, and Terry Kelly in the final with a score of 21 to 9. This was an outstanding achievement as the event is open to players over 60 years of age from clubs within the Division, which includes Bacchus Marsh, Diggers Rest, Kyneton, Kyneton Golf, Lancefield, Macedon, Romsey, Trentham, Wallan and Woodend, so there are a lot of contenders, making it a challenging title to win. Also, while the event is open to all players over 60 years of age, Kevin is on the cusp of turning 80 and is the oldest player ever to win the event. On the same day Teresa Wylie achieved runnerup in Teresa Wylie and Kevin the Ladies’ Over 60s singles. Jarred Teresa narrowly lost against state player from Kyneton, Desma Budd, with a score line of 18-21. Congratulations also go to Marg Ivory, Teresa Wylie and Louise Ball on winning the Central Highlands Bowling Division ladies’ triples final on October 20. Well done ladies! Dragons in great shape As we near the Christmas break in our 162nd year, the Gisborne Cricket Club is in good shape in all areas. Our senior club is firing, with record numbers at training and some standout performances through the grades. Our juniors are well under way, with lots of kids participating on a Friday night or Saturday morning. Our fantastic Blasters program for little kids is back and better than ever and also our very special All Abilities sessions have been a great success and demonstrate the community values of our club. A big thanks to all our fantastic volunteers who make all this happen. Have a great, safe Christmas!

All Abilities cricket launched in Gisborne Gisborne Cricket Club is breaking down barriers to inclusion with the launch of its All Abilities junior clinics following a highly successful pilot program last year. Specifically for children with a disability aged between 5 and 16 years, the clinics provide one-onone coaching and assistance from club volunteers and are a fun mix of music, cricket activities, agility courses and games. Participants can do the activities that suit their abilities at their own pace with plenty of support. “We just want to see all children given the opportunity and support to get out and play cricket,” said program coordinator Scott Vernon. “Whether it’s just for fun, or if kids really love cricket, we can link them up to the pathways that are available to take them further in the game”. The program recently won a Victorian Health Department grant which has provided for the purchase of specialised sporting equipment and augmentive and alternative communication aids, allowing the club to more fully cater to participants’ diverse needs. Orienteering – Summer Series November 27 at Tony Clarke Reserve Macedon saw the start of the Macedon Ranges Summer Orienteering Series. This was a popular introduction to navigation sports for the family and for fitter people looking to add interest to their regular walk or training run. The events take up to an hour (all in daylight) and use a map of each local town. One can participate individually or in a group in short, medium or long courses. Power walkers have the added interest of a score course, in which control points are of different values. Beginners’ course and coaching are available. They came from near and far to play Mt Macedon Mt Macedon Golf Club was delighted that so many of our Dalhousie District partners were able to attend the annual 27 hole Open event sponsored by Drummond Golf-Niddrie, which was staged in November. Players from Strathbogie, Avenel, Broadford, Kilmore, Romsey, Lancefield, Seymour and Euroa Golf Clubs were treated to a course in an excellent spring time state, weather conditions conducive for good golf and partook of a delicious lunch. At the end of the day E. Carracher took the major Scratch trophy with 102 strokes. Patrick Doyle (8 handicap) was the A grade handicap winner with a nett 100. Marcus Ward (12) took the B grade handicap event also with a nett 100 and Bob Close’s nett 99.5 (handicap 21) saw him a comfortable winner of the C grade trophy. The previous day’s two-person ambrose event was won by Jeremy Clare and Matt Salter with a combined stableford total of 71 points. Sixteen happy Gisborne Thunder competitors at the Optus Junior District Competition at MSAC.
Sixteen Gisborne Thunder junior swimmers competed at the annual Country Junior District Competition held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on November 9. The club's junior swimmers, aged 8-12 years, were selected to represent the District 15 region of Victoria. This was a fantastic opportunity for all of the swimmers involved, particularly Dylan Campbell-Quigley who was selected as the male captain for the day. Well done Dylan. Many swimmers achieved amazing results during this competition including Dylan Kelly and Kobi Comerford, who both swam in the 8-9-years boys'
medley and freestyle relay, placing first in both events. Dylan also came third in his individual freestyle event. 10-year-old Caitlin Greed was third in her relay events and Tess Kelly came third in the individual 11-years girls' butterfly. Congratulations to the other swimmers who competed: Flynn Acott, Sophie Griggs, Catherine and Seamus Mahony, Aysha, Yasmin and Billy Masood, Charlotte and Jasmine Matthews, Shelby Morgan and Matilda Owens. 'Come and Try' at Mt Macedon Petanque Club The Petanque Club would like to help you entertain all your family over the Christmas holiday period. Most families have a set of shiny boules, either six or eight. Club members will be able to show you how you can all enjoy playing petanque. On December 8 from 10am, we are holding a ‘Come and Try Day’ of petanque (French boules). We want to encourage people of all ages to play this low impact but skilful sport. Whilst doing this we will be supporting the Peter Mac Foundation cancer research. All equipment and tuition will be provided. You will need covered-in footwear and a gold coin for a donation. Macedon Ranges Badminton happy in Hobart Macedon Ranges Badminton Club (MRBC) competed in the Atalanta Jamboree in Hobart in late October. It was a great tournament with nearly 400 women from Australia and New Zealand competing. Day one began superbly with Kerry and Janine winning the doubles. Two of our teams made it to the grand finals: Macedon Mudslides and the Macedon Mojitos. The Mudslides were the winners in B2 after going through the week undefeated. Well done Rebecca, Michelle, Debbie, Fiona and Melissa. The Mojitos won in their section, beating the Hobart Blizzards who had beaten them during the
week. Congratulations Ruth, Janine, Jan, Kerry, Carol and Donna. The other MRBC teams, Phoenix, Macedon Mystics, Phoenix Fire and Macedon Cats, had a great competition, just missing out on the finals. Golfers in the pink for Cancer Council The Gisborne Golf Club ladies organised a very successful Long Pink Lunch on October 16 and raised $1100 for the Cancer Council. More than 60 members and guests enjoyed the golf and delicious lunch. We even managed to escape the rain which cleared shortly after the hit off time, and everyone looked wonderful wearing various shades of pink. On October 19 there was great excitement on the fourth hole when our lady president Adrienne Fievez scored

a hole-in-one. This hole is sponsored by Sports Physio & Active Rehab and Adrienne was presented with a generous massage voucher by Sue Cautley, director. Congratulations Adrienne. THE CHURCHES The Advent of our God It’s sure getting busy as Christmas speeds towards us. Each year there is a rush to complete what needs to be done and to prepare for what is, for us here, a long and hot summer holiday period. One of the traditions that have been growing in commercial aggressiveness is the need to give gifts. This tradition has its origins mirroring the gift, Jesus, to all of us and for our salvation. Sadly, marketing hides the reason why we are giving. During the year, I noticed many of my friends on social media (Ah, Boomers, I say, giving away my vintage) ask that people donate to a cause rather than a personal gift. I like that in many ways as it enables the charity to use the financial gain more creatively. What is essential though to remember is that it is the intent of giving that matters. For those of us who celebrate Christmas in church, it is the gift of God that keeps on giving. And that gift is priceless. That gift is love. Fr Dennis
St Paul’s Op Shop jottings St Paul’s Op Shop management and volunteers would like to thank the many customers for their patronage and those who have donated goods throughout the year. Call in during December and you will be greeted with Christmas cake for the adults and lollies for the children. We will have a great range of Christmas stock which is topped up each day. Our ever popular annual Almighty Book and Brica-Brac sale will again be held next year on Saturday January 18. We are asking you to help another worthy cause at the moment. We are a drop off/collection point for the Gisborne Food Bank. At the moment they are asking for toiletries – soap, adult toothbrushes and toothpaste, cleaning products, laundry powder, tissues, toilet rolls, UHT milk, spreads, custard, children’s snacks, tinned fruit and tomato sauce. For the holiday season, we close at 1pm on Saturday December 21 and reopen at 10am on Tuesday January 28. However, we still accept good quality clothing, books and bric-a-brac over the holiday period. They can be left in the three receptacles near the front door of the shop. Our volunteers wish their many valued customers a happy and holy Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. This month we feature long-time volunteer, Kath Vilips.

St Brigid’s Parish Catechetics Enrolment 2020
There is a Christmas Day service at 9.30am. Two billion Christians worldwide will also be celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Some may say ‘Bah, humbug’ to going to church — letting oneself get involved with some baby born in turbulent times 2,019 years ago, a man crucified 33 years later as Jesus Christ. And yet Almighty God who is Love says that He gifted Jesus Christ to the world. A part of Christianity happens weekly here at St Andrew’s with the 10.30am Sunday services, Bible passages are read out. The Bible tells about Jesus. Two of October’s readings were Mark 14:1-11 and Isaiah 6:1-8. Hymns are sung. October’s hymns included Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, My Hope is Built on Nothing Less than Jesus’ Blood and Righteousness, Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah and Who is on the Lord’s Side? There is a sermon. In October one such sermon was ‘Choose this day whom you will serve!’ There are prayers. Sunday School happens weekly. Our quilters lovingly made quilts in 2019 and nearly 100 were given to the Children’s Hospital. Contact: George McConaghie 0434 734 488.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 This is a scripture that gets used a lot at weddings, but I think it is relevant and a good challenge for all of us. Let us BE the person who is patient and kind, BE the person who keeps no record of people’s wrongs, BE the person who doesn’t dishonour others, who always protects and who always hopes. GAZETTE STUDENT AWARDS GISBORNE SECONDARY COLLEGE Laura Crozier Laura has excelled as School Captain this year and has made a great contribution to the life of the school and has been an excellent role model and leader. In addition to this Laura has been a strong member of the Gisborne Secondary College SRC, the Victorian SRC and a Macedon Ranges Youth Ambassador. William Holmes William has been an excellent School Captain and has demonstrated maturity, energy and leadership William has also been active in both the SRC and the wider school community, and has made valuable contributions to decision making at both the school and year level.
GISBORNE PRIMARY SCHOOL Olivia Harry Olivia is a kind, compassionate and well-mannered student. In the classroom, she demonstrates creativity and is very focused on her work, always performing to her personal best. She contributes to the extracurricular program as an enthusiastic Italian captain and dedicated member of the school choir. Logan Ireson This year, Logan has demonstrated maturity as a learner and as a member of our school. He lives out the school’s value of Responsibility as demonstrated in his role as Sustainability Leader. Logan is a welcoming student who has modelled exemplary behaviour as well as a strong work ethic.
Each year the Gazette presents a $50 award and a certificate to two outstanding students from each school that has contributed regular reports to the paper over the year. Congratulations to our 2019 recipients!
Scarlett’s passion for student voice and agency has allowed her to make the most of her role as School Captain. She has been a brilliant leader in our school community and has represented MMPS at a very high standard. It has been wonderful to see her make the most of this wonderful opportunity. She has taken on her responsibilities with positivity and enthusiasm and has developed leadership skills that will serve her well in the future, a future that will be fantastic to see unfold. Sara has been such a positive, energetic and hardworking student in all areas this year. She gets along well with everyone and has been an outstanding leader and support to her Prep buddies. Sara has been heavily involved in our Social Justice Group this year, as well as participating strongly and representing us well across all interschool sporting events.

DECEMBER 1919 A very heavy storm was experienced on Wednesday last. Terrific thunder and vivid lightning, accompanied by torrential rain, kept residents in a state of alarm for several hours. Starting about 6 o’clock it provided an unpleasant home-coming for the children and friends who had been spending the day at Wooling at the combined Sunday School picnic. Most of the picnickers reached town in a limp state. 255 points of rain were registered. Macedon C.C. had a very enjoyable trip to Romsey on Saturday last, when they met and defeated the Romsey C.C. by 36 runs on the first innings. A meeting of the Gisborne Fire Brigade was held in the Mechanics’ Reading Room on Tuesday night. The Captain, Secretary and Mr. T. Grant were empowered to purchase a new hydrant and a length of hose. The Secretary was directed to write to the Council and ask permission to move the fire station forward so as to allow the doors to open directly on to the footpath. A practice will be held next Tues. evening at 7 o’clock and members and intending members are urged to roll up and help make the brigade a live organization. The Macedon branch of the League of Honor, of which Lady Hodges is President and Miss E. Scott Secretary, gave a concert on Friday evening to mark the close of the work for which it was organized. Miss Lang, general secretary of the League, addressed the meeting, pointing out that as the League of Honor was a war-time organization, it could carry on no longer. Its work had been not only that of helping the Red Cross, the War Savings Movement and other patriotic work, but was also an appeal to the spiritual side, and by prayer, purity and temperance, to keep high the standard among the young women of the Empire. The residents of Couangalt forwarded through the State School 270 eggs and two pairs of fowls to the Military Hospitals to help in the Christmas festivities. The teacher (Miss Olive Horner) desires to express thanks to all those who so kindly contributed. A large gathering assembled at the Jubilee Hall, Macedon, on 13th inst. at a valedictory social to Mrs. E. and Miss F. Henderson, who are leaving the district. In presenting an illuminated address and a cheque, the chairman Mr. T.W. Scott referred to the great respect and esteem which Mrs. Henderson had won from all during her long residence in the district. For over 64 years she had lived in Macedon and had reared a large family, who were a credit to her and to the district.
