Happy new year!

We’re pleased to be back for another year after a good break over the holiday period and we hope that you and your children are refreshed and ready for the return to work and school.

My wife and I enjoyed a very relaxing cruise to New Zealand and were fortunate enough to view the fjords on the west coast of the South Island in brilliant sunshine.

I say lucky because the rainfall in that area is measured in feet rather than inches so the passengers on most cruise ships see the fjiords in miserable conditions, if at all.

The Gazette remains big Last November, because of the increase in the number of ads and the amount of copy received, the Gazette‘s size had to be increased from 32 to 36 pages. It stayed that way for December but I believed, because there would be few school reports and many groups would still be in summer recess, that this February edition would revert to 32 pages. Not so. We’re still at 36 pages

and if the trend continues we’ll be hard put to keep the paper at that figure.

Fire danger Despite dire forecasts of a very hot summer, January’s weather turned out to be surprisingly mild, but February is the month we know can bite us and we are sure to experience some very hot and dangerous fire days this month. So we need to have our fire plans ready and to have made a decision now whether or not we will stay or leave on extreme days. My wife and I will definitely be leaving our South Gisborne property on such days as we know that, although we have prepared the area

around the house as well as we can, there is no way we would be able to defend ourselves against the sort of fire that engulfed the Deverall Road area last February.

Readers will miss Emma’s fun and quirky articles; we thank her very much for her contribution and wish her well for this year and the years ahead when she aims to study journalism.

Angela Hryc and Jasper Carn Emma has retired but two other local young people have volunteered to join our team. Angela is a recent graduate and will help out on the editing side while Jasper is a photographer and you will find a number of his photos in this edition. I hope you had a great Christmas and summer holiday and got out and about enjoying life. At the time of writing this article we were gearing up for a hot January so here’s hoping that by the time this goes to print, we will be relatively fire free!

Thank you once again to our volunteers for their outstanding dedication and courage protecting us in a range of emergency roles in this area.

The Gisborne Festival was a great success in mid-December and for the first time in a couple of years the weather was perfect! This saw a huge crowd come out to line the main street and take part in the street parade, rides and entertainment.

I have always been a huge supporter of this event as I feel that for a commuter town like Gisborne and surrounds, it is a rare opportunity for everyone to take a breath and celebrate family and festivity together. This certainly proved to be the case at the Festival and Gardiner Oval was packed with families picnicking together with friends watching the fireworks and coming together as community.

However a contentious issue to me was the lack of Christmas decorations in Gisborne. Nothing is more exciting than a street lined with Christmas cheer. But apart from the decorations put up by members of the GREAT Association along the eastern side of Aitken Street, we had a very small Christmas display. I have been advised that if council were to fund Christmas decorations for all the major towns in the shire it would cost approximately $200,000. This is a large sum of money that, as you would agree, could be allocated to many other worthy projects. Conversely each town could endeavor to fund their own decorations through their community networks, or perhaps there is another solution?

I personally would like to see Christmas decorations or some other unique solution lining Aitken Street in 2015 and would love to hear your ideas on how this could be done. It could be as simple as reinstalling and extending the light network in the oak trees or it could be one fixed decoration like a Christmas Tree – similar but on a smaller scale to that of Geelong. Please have a think about it and let me or my South Ward colleagues know so we can investigate further. We love a little Christmas bling especially if costs don’t have an impost on the ratepayer.  More news next month on the comings and goings at council, but until then buckle up for the start of the new school year and some restored routine, as we forge ahead into a bright 2015.

Gisborne now has a Facebook page I’m a resident of Gisborne, and have been involved with social media – marketing, promotion and forum moderating for more than 15 years.

I came across the Woodend Facebook group called “Great Place Woodend” and saw how people asked for opinions, advice, and shared news of events for their area. I searched for a similar group in Gisborne and couldn’t find one. Gisborne is its own community and one that I’m proud of; it deserves its own representation, so I decided to create one.

The group is open to anyone who lives and visits Gisborne; it’s particularly useful for new residents who need help in, for example, finding a tradesman, knowing where to buy firewood, looking for a running partner, book group, or the best pizza in town. I wish I’d had a place to ask all these questions when I first moved here. The group will be moderated to maintain its purpose and integrity.

Focus is on bushfire arson As Victoria moves through another bushfire season, Crime Stoppers Victoria is calling on residents to help stamp out deliberately and recklessly lit fires in the Macedon Ranges region.

Patrons wait for The Grinch to appear at the Cinema Under the Stars in December.

Cinema Under the Stars success The Cinema under the Stars fundraiser held on December 21 and organised by the Gardiner Reserve Community Project at Gardiner Reserve was a great success.

About 500 people attended on a beautiful warm night. People arrived with chairs and blankets and set up ready for the movie, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, which started at 9pm. The children were excited and so well behaved when they got to see Santa arriving on the Gisborne CFA truck.

The Gardiner Reserve Community Project

organised this event to showcase to the community what was possible on a regular basis in the warmer months when we reach our goal of having an electronic screen/scoreboard.

We are planning more events in the coming months and continue to work hard to raise the remaining money required to get the scoreboard up and working ASAP. Helen Grey

Australia Day recipients receive awards Macedon Ranges Australia Day awards for 2015 were presented at Kyneton and Gisborne on January 26. The recipients were as follows: Citizen of the Year: Adam Bourke – The owner of Bourkies Bakehouse in Woodend has made a huge contribution to the Macedon Ranges community over 25 years.

Young Citizen of the Year: Hayden Muir – Hayden completed a 752km ride to Canberra to raise awareness and funds for the Epilepsy Foundation. Through the ride, barbecues and community

talks, he raised over $20,000.

Community Achievement: There were three recipients: Shantelle Grant – For the past three years Shantelle has organised the Macedon Ranges ‘Light It Up Blue’ campaign which recognises World Autism Awareness Day. Tamara Wilson – a founding member of PS My Family Matters, a charity supporting carers and siblings of people with mental illness.

Community Event: O’Pig Newham Sculptural Pig Festival Arts Ambassador: Stephen Brockman – Stephen has been musical director of the Gisborne Singers since 2008. Under his baton, the Singers have grown in quality and numbers, and continue to perform works with guest soloists and orchestras. He received his award at the Gisborne celebrations.

Gisborne Kinder Children at Gisborne Kindergarten are lucky to have the new music wall installed last year. Designed and built by one of our very generous parents, it is made from recycled materials bought from a local Op Shop by another family.

We promote sustainability and encourage family involvement in our program. This project was a huge success with children choosing to use it regularly throughout the day every day.

The families last year, as in the past, were incredibly generous with both time and resources. Thank you.

Over the past few years we have been putting together an album of the history of Grant Avenue Kinder and in 2014 it came along in leaps and bounds thanks to one of our parents.

We need your bras! Why not donate them to Project Uplift, a scheme whereby bras are sent to third world countries for women who desperately need ‘uplifting’ but cannot afford to buy bras.

Some of the women’s stories from the Pacific Islands are very interesting and heart-warming. Two elderly sisters aged 80 and 90 years have been sharing a bra between them. Whoever gets up first gets to wear the bra. Only one of them can go to church wearing a bra. Their message described their tears of joy and how they kissed the volunteers who distributed their new bras.

At one village, the women walked for two hours to be fitted when a shipment of bras arrived. One lady had had the same bra for so many years that it was nearly falling to pieces. She kept it together with safety pins. She reserved wearing it only to church on Sundays. .

In a number of remote Fijian villages, 3000 women were fitted in seven hours. Please help if you can.

Historic pipe organ rebuild nears completion The project to restore and rebuild the historic pipe organ from All Saints Old Cathedral, Bendigo, is nearing completion. The restored organ will be installed into the Church of the Resurrection at Macedon in March and is eagerly awaited to support the growing music program at this venue.

This fine instrument – the first pipe organ to arrive on the Bendigo goldfields in 1867 – now has new bellows and a new wind system recently imported from Germany. Over 1,000 pipes have been cleaned and restored. Additional ranks of pipes have been included to bring the organ back to its Victorian specifications.

New casework to enclose the organ has been designed and will be built in blackwood wattle to complement the interior of the Church.

Apart from supporting local choirs, organ recitals are planned as the restored organ will attract internationally acclaimed organists. Macedon Ranges residents will soon have a fine music resource for their enjoyment and for attracting music lovers to our district. Ulysses riders deliver toys The Ulysses Macedon Ranges Branch held their 27th annual Melbourne Toy Run on December 21 to deliver toys to sick children. Riders came from all over the state to rendezvous at the Thunder Dome on the Calder Freeway.

Local police participated in a campaign over the summer holiday period which began in November with a heavy focus on drink-driving offences. Over 11,000 drivers were breath tested with just 22 offences detected.

Local Area Commander Inspector Ryan Irwin praised the many drivers who heeded the drink-driving message.

What was concerning to police, however, were the 515 other offences detected during the first stage of the campaign. These included speeding, failing to wear seat belts, unlicensed driving and using phones while driving.

The key messages from police are: Stay alert / Stay within the speed limit / Stay awake / Stay sober ... and Stay alive!

Crossing guard named our Local Hero Congratulations to Cheryl Wilkinson for being presented the 2014 Local Hero Award at the Gisborne Community Carols on December 14.

The award is given to community workers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

For 32 years Cheryl has worked as a lollypop lady at the New Gisborne school crossing where she makes an effort to know the children by name. She has also done community work with the Shire.

Cheryl was proud and honoured to receive the award. She loves her job and finds it very rewarding.

“I love working with people and doing something important, like keeping children safe,” she said.

Bluelight donates to suicide prevention

The Macedon Ranges Bluelight committee, as part of its commitment to young people and community, has donated $700 to Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Live4Life program.

“We hope that this goes some way towards assisting such a worthwhile program for the young people of the Macedon Ranges,” said Senior Constable Joe Grbac, Youth Resource Officer for Victoria Police, a partner organisation in the Live4Life program.

Live4Life is a mental health promotion targeting young people in the Macedon Ranges.

It was developed in 2009 as a community-wide response to a reported increase in depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide in the shire. Live4Life takes a coordinated, collaborative local community response to youth mental health.

These funds will go towards the delivery of Teen Mental Health First Aid Training to Year 11 students at Kyneton Secondary College.

friendly local group of volunteers! We will make you very welcome and you will become part of a team helping to support a broad range of essential services provided by Vision Australia to adults and children who are blind or have low vision.

We are sad to lose two of our faithful and active members who are shortly moving from Gisborne. We extend our appreciation to Jean and Terry Poor who have given outstanding support over many years. We wish them every happiness in their new endeavours.

The last lunch was a Christmas lunch and was enjoyed by a substantial group who gather for fellowship and make a contribution to the work of Oxfam. The group contributed over $2,000 last year to developmental projects. This is not a lot of money in Australia, but to a community where $1 a day would be considered good earnings, this is a significant contribution.

We meet in the Uniting Church meeting room on the third Friday of each month, but not in January, for a simple lunch and shared fellowship. The first such gathering will be on February 20. Feel free to join us. We charge $5 – all proceeds to Oxfam.

CWA takes up the reins for 2015 The Gisborne CWA club started the year with a picnic in the park at Gisborne, a pleasant informal day that was enjoyed by all. Our members Dulcie Sharp are looking forward to a busy and productive year with community projects, art and craft days and social events.

Our last meeting held in December was our Christmas breakup and the raffle was drawn for the hamper. The raffle, which raised approximately $1200, was won by a local lady. Thank you to the community for your support.

All proceeds will go to Bullengarook Specialist School.

A social outing is planned for February 4 to see the live show Strictly Ballroom.

Our next meeting will be held on February 9, 9.30am for a 10am start.

Our meetings are held at the Masonic Hall and new members are always welcome to join our happy group. The competition for the day will be 'A bloom from my garden’.

New year at Macedon CWA brings focus on Cameroon Hello and happy New Year to all; may 2015 be the year you join Macedon CWA and meet some lovely new friends, study the country of Cameroon, address challenges, public speaking and lots more.

Our first meeting for the year Lorraine is on February 17; we meet on Tweddle the third Tuesday of each month at Macedon CWA Hall, 662 Mount Macedon Road, Mount Macedon. Meetings start at 1pm, with afternoon tea and a chat to finish. Children are welcome.

Macedon is one of the few CWA branches to have its own hall. The original hall was burnt in the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires. The community and generous donors had built the original hall and rebuilt it after the fires.

Macedon is the oldest branch in Victoria, starting in 1926 as the Women's Institute and changing over following the founding of CWA in 1928.

We are looking forward to the State Conference in Bendigo in May and the national CWA conference at Port Macquarie in NSW in August.

Friends of Red Cross welcome new year Our monthly meetings resume on Friday February 6 at 1.30 in the Senior Citizens rooms.

Blumes winter fashions on March 5 will be our next fundraiser and we look forward to welcoming our usual supporters (and new friends!) to this event.

It starts at 1.30pm in the Seniors rooms. Door entry, which includes afternoon tea and a lucky draw, is $10.

Red Cross Calling comes around again in March and we are seeking additional volunteers to give a couple of hours or more to cover Gisborne and New Gisborne. Interested individuals and service groups are invited to contact our Red Cross Calling coordinator, Jean, on 5428 2396 before March to allow time for planning.

There will be no meeting in April as the first Friday falls on Good Jean Dixon Friday.

We’re all bright and breezy and ready to go It’s going to be an interesting year, with several retirements from our previous committee and new people taking on the responsibilities of leadership. We are looking forward to building on the great foundations of our previous hardworking office bearers.

One of our major aims is to build up the membership numbers.

The past few years have seen

something of a decline, as losses of various sorts have caused some gaps. We think U3A is a terrific place to come to meet people, share ideas, learn new things, and maybe teach other people new things. This sort of sharing is in essence the origin of universities.

One thing we don’t have in our University – perish the thought! – are exams! But we do have lots of discussion including some jokes, and a chance for everyone to express their own ideas.

There will be guest speakers each morning, and later in the year we will try to organise some more structured sessions with ongoing topics, while those who stay on for lunch can share in the broader range of chat about matters important and not so important.

Our first day back is Monday February 2 at 10.30am, and on that day we will be spending quite a lot of time on the subject “Where to from here?” PLEASE, COME ALONG, and join in. Everyone is welcome!

Gardiner Reserve project needs you The successful Cinema Under the Stars Family Picnic night on December 21 demonstrated the huge possibilities and value of the screen for all our community and sporting clubs.

The Gardiner Reserve upgrade project is now in its final stages but desperately needs you to raise the final funds required.

Tenders have now been awarded for both the lights and netball court and works for these began on January 12 with an expected completion date of the end of March.

Musical magic at Macedon and Mt Macedon carols

Macedon and Mt Macedon Carols by Candlelight on December 16 was a wonderful community evening and featured an exciting range of talent.

Local secondary school bands Ex Marks the Spot and José and the Coffee Mugs kicked off the night with great sounds.

SAFARI's end of year celebrations The SAFARI Club finished 2014 on a high.

We held the Over 15s end of year dinner on December 5 at the Victorian Tavern in Gisborne and our Under 15s experienced fun and exhilaration at Luna Park on December 13.

There is an adage that a picture speaks a thousand words and we feel the pictures above speak volumes.

Cemetery gets $10,000 towards memorial

Woodend Probus welcomes new members

The Gisborne Cemetery Trust is celebrating the announcement of $10,835 in funding for their Anzac war memorial. The funds have been awarded as part of the Anzac Centenary Grant Program in which local communities can apply for grants to deliver projects to commemorate 100 years of the Anzac tradition.

Federal Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell was thrilled he was able to help secure the funding. “Members of the Gisborne Cemetery Trust have collaborated with the RSL, local schools and community organisations in the planning for this memorial,” Mr Mitchell said.

The memorial will include a Lone Pine, propagated in Canberra, and a bronze statue of a World War One Digger.

Woodend Probus brings people together in friendship, to advance intellectual and cultural interests, and to offer stimulation and fun through social interaction and activities. We welcome new members who are not in fulltime work or who are retired.

The club meets on the first Thursday of every month at the Woodend Community Centre at 10am. We listen to informative talks on a wide variety of topics and once a month there is an excursion. We welcome new visitors at our meetings. There is no cost for visiting, and this offers an opportunity to see if Woodend Probus is for you.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council hosted a dinner dance at the Kyneton Bowling Club to celebrate International Day of People with Disability on December 3.

Disability centre support staff said clients who attended the dinner dance "had a ball", according to Council’s Director of Community Wellbeing,

Karen Stevens.

“People with disabilities from all over the shire were able to enjoy what many of us can take for granted – a night of fun, music, dancing, food, games,” Ms Stevens said.

More than 80 people attended the dinner dance, which was organised as part of Council’s commitment to social

inclusion for people with a disability.

The event was organised in partnership with Windarring, St Lukes and Haven.

International Day of People with Disability promotes an understanding of people with disability and encourages support for their dignity, rights and wellbeing.

The long and short of helping others

I have been growing my hair for the past six years, long enough for it to grow to the bottom of my back. For the past year I have thought about cutting it off to my shoulders and I didn’t want my hair to go to waste, so I began researching what I could do with it.

I came across the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program which organises hair donations to be used for making free wigs for women who have lost their hair to cancer. It’s an amazing organisation, one of many that want to help those diagnosed with cancer to live as normal a life as possible by making them feel beautiful during their toughest time in life.

For the next few years I will grow my hair to donate to another organisation known as the Australian Alopecia Areata Foundation, which have wig manufacturers who buy the hair to make wigs for those who have lost their own, with funds made from the sale to go into the AAAF Wigs For Kids Program.

Hopefully this story will create awareness and inspire others to donate their hair for a Before the cut... worthy cause.

Entries open for revamped Woodend art show More prize money, new categories and strong involvement from local artists are setting the stage for the 40th Woodend Lions Art Show.

Woodend Lions Club is hosting the anniversary event over the March Labour Day long weekend in a new partnership with the Macedon Ranges Art Trail.

The two groups are committed to reinvigorating the annual art show which is a major fundraiser for community projects. Entry forms are now available on the Lions website www.woodend.vic.lions.org.au A generous prize pool totalling more than $3500 is expected to help attract around 400 entries.

This year will see new categories for photography and 3D work such as sculpture, glass art and textiles. Juniors are encouraged to participate, with three prizes being offered to those aged under 16. There will also be a prize awarded for Best Work by a Local Artist.

The show is open to anyone but entry forms are strictly due by February 20. A maximum of three entries per artist is allowed. Art must be delivered to St Ambrose Hall, Woodend, on March 2, 3 or 4. For more details contact Linda Healy on 0438 363 242 or Nadine Hartnett on 0439 399 838.

Gisborne Artists' popular annual show coming up The Gisborne Artists Society will hold its Annual Show at the Mechanics Hall this month, beginning at 7.30pm on Friday, February 27 until Sunday, March 1.

The show will be opened by Nadine Hartnett, founding manager of the Macedon Ranges Art Trail.

Finger food supper and drinks will be provided and the cost to attend the opening night is $10 per person. Entry is free on Saturday and Sunday.

This year has seen the addition of new members to the society, which will add further variety to the extensive range of quality work on offer at very affordable prices.

A delightful collection of porcelain pieces will also be offered.

Following last year’s show, we presented The Oaks nursing home with a cheque for $3000 and your continued support will ensure a great success this year.

Big year coming up for young voices Young Voices of Macedon choir is looking forward to a busy and exciting year of rehearsals, workshops and performances.

An important highlight will be a performance at the Montsalvat Arts Centre in May when when the Young Voices will perform at a festival of choirs alongside groups such as the Melbourne Chamber Choir, Melbourne Welsh Male Choir and the choirs of Haileybury College.

Our choir will also participate in a workshop and performance with the Bendigo Youth Choir, sing at local churches and community events and present a major concert in late October.

Following the creation of a madrigal group late last year, the choir now has three groups: the Vivo junior group which follows a Kodalybased program, the Cantabile performing group and the auditioned Madrigali ensemble for senior members.

In December, the choir distinguished itself performing with the Choir of the Anglican Parish of Gisborne in a service of readings and carols at the Church of the Resurrection, Macedon.

It is gratifying to report that Choir Captain Dante Romeo has successfully auditioned for the Victorian Opera Youth Chorus Ensemble.

Macedon CFA has recently launched a Facebook page as well, giving the organisation a greater opportunity to connect with the wider community.

I am delighted to announce the opening of the Macedon Wine Room at the venue previously known as Macedon Views. Chef and owner Steve Gerdes has 30 years’ experience in Victoria’s food and wine industry working with some of the best including Donlevy Fitzpatrick and Bill Marchetti.

The café and wine bar is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 8am to 10pm.

Scottish Country Dancers meet at Newham

Art Group again plans two shows for the year

The Macedon Ranges Scottish Country Dancers group begins another year of dancing on February 5.

We meet every Thursday afternoon from 1pm to 3pm at Newham Mechanics Institute to have loads of fun while we dance away stress and tension and exercise our bodies and minds.

Dances are usually performed in “Sets” of six or eight people and all dances are walked through first before we actually dance.

No matter if you are a beginner or an experienced dancer, young or just young at heart, we would like to invite you to join us on Thursday afternoons and get those feet tapping to the music.

Life membership for foundation member

Soothing start to the year Committee members of Macedon Ranges Film Society put their heads together over the Christmas break to come up with a 2015 film list that would continue to maintain the high standard of the previous five years.

The year kicks off with one for the locals. The 2014 film Healing starring Hugo Weaving and Don Hany is set in appealing Kyneton and Macedon Ranges locations. The healing theme refers to the very positive effect animals can have on the lives of people.

The film features stunning footage of wedgetailed eagles which, on many a fine day, can be seen elegantly circling in the sky above Hanging Rock.

The film society will present this year, as in other years, films of many genres from drama to biography to comedy and much more. The first film of the year will be shown on Wednesday, February 11.

The society meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm in the Woodend Community Centre. Supper and discussion follows the film for those who wish to stay on. Initial enquiries must be made by phoning Lorraine on 5427 0921 or Christine on 5429 5452.

Phoenix Macedon Ranges Art & Craft Group held its Christmas Exhibition and Sale over the weekend of December 4 to 6, with the Opening Night on December 4 hailed a success.

The highlight of the night was the presentation of Life Membership to founding member and local identity Joan Bourke. The presentation was made by Gazette editor Bryan Power. It was mentioned that Joan had been on the local arts and crafts scene for many years and was one of the people responsible for establishing the Phoenix group.

After the intervening period of 30 years the Phoenix group still gives its members the opportunity to display and sell their work as part of a larger group thanks to the work of the founding members such as Joan.

At the conclusion of the Exhibition the winner of the special effort award was announced as Alex from Riddells Creek who gratefully received her prize of a basket of hand-crafted items made by the Phoenix members.

Active, vibrant and caring member of Bullengarook community VALE Dennis Geoffrey Long 11 November 1946 – 4 December 2014 Dennis was born in Pakenham, the youngest of three children, and grew up in Lang Lang.

He attended the Lang Lang Primary School and then Dandenong Tech where he was dux.

He became an engineer and all of his working life was spent with the Defence Department. He met his wife Meredith on a blind date. They went on to have three children.

When the Longs first moved to Bullengarook in March 1974, Dennis and Meredith immersed themselves in the community. Dennis was an active member of the CFA, the SES, the

Mount Players and Compassionate Friends.

He was a respite carer, a Scottish dancer, a first aider, an IT support person and a long-term blood donor.

Dennis was a member of Landcare and one of their spraying group. There are many properties in Bullengarook that are blackberry free because of his hard work with other volunteers in that group.

He has been on school councils, Recreation Reserve committees and was one of the founding members of the Bullengarook Historical Society that led the charge to save the old Bullengarook Primary School building from demolition.

Although surgeons discovered the defect when he was two, they didn’t want to operate until he was four as they feared he wouldn’t be strong enough to survive the procedure.

His open heart surgery turned out to be a huge success.

Thirty-four years after the surgery that changed Jeremy’s life, he understood he had been given a second chance in life. He realised life is what you make it and craved a challenge that would push him beyond anything he had ever previously attempted.

Sadly, his son Alex was killed on the same date, December 4, nineteen years ago.

He also leaves his stepdaughter Kirsty and her husband Joseph and Rebecca’s husband Matthew.

Meredith and Dennis also have two foster sons; Nathan, 8, and Danny, 6. Dennis also leaves his grandsons James, Aidan, Toby, Sebastian, and Lewis and his granddaughters Darcy and Eleanor.

Dennis Long was a very highly respected and caring member of his community and he will be sadly missed.

A new year and a new shed ... almost!

Yes, at last we can see our new shed on the horizon. We’ll be setting up in the back section of the Lyell Street office, next to the new Macedon Ranges Health Centre now nearing completion.

We’ve finalised our layouts and we should start moving in during April. We’ll give you further details about our design in the next month or two.

There has been an important upside to our “shedless year”. It has reinforced our understanding that the Men’s Shed isn’t just a carpenter’s shop.

Men’s Shed is bigger than that.

The carpenter’s shop is important but the heart of Men’s Shed is about blokes communicating with each other (usually in a nice way), learning from each other and doing things together away from home.

It’s also about broadening our outlook and helping others along

Update on new health centre in Neal Street The grand opening is getting closer and our services are a hive of activity in preparation. The new Macedon Ranges Health Centre will also include the Neal Street Medical Clinic which will offer an extensive range of GP and specialist medical services.

‘Betty’s Boop’ with Betty Doolan The Life Enhancement Program (LEP) team really outdid themselves over Christmas – the Christmas trees were beautiful, five in all.

I would go down to our dining room around midnight when all the lights were out and just sit and watch the lights on the tree go off and on. It was so peaceful.

My big disappointment at Christmas was the new Santa did not kiss me, but he did give my back a good massage. Then I thought my luck had changed when a new Santa came from the Fire Station but I must have looked too anxious because he dropped the longstemmed carnation and was out the door like a shot. Next year I will just be content to wave to Santa in the shopping centre.

The LEP team plan special days for residents over January, among them picking strawberries, a picnic at Malmsbury Lake (the ducks were certainly well fed that day), sausage sizzle in the park then a mystery drive, fish and chips to eat using your fingers, in-house pictures with popcorn, chips, icecream then happy hour! Our friends from the nursing home and Grevillea came to join us.

Another day was planned for Harcourt but there were bushfires in the area. True to form, LEP changed direction and residents went to Craigieburn instead. After a lovely lunch at the Highland Hotel residents looked around the shopping complex and all agreed they had had a beaut day.

Many children visited the residents at The Oaks: school children came and sang Christmas Carols, children left lovely cards on the dining room tables, staff and family brought children in to see the residents, Edna’s great-grandchildren (they barrack for North Melbourne) came, Rita brought her grandson Connor (he is a Doolan), Celeste brought Camille (my special friend), other children came for a visit or were talked about or shown off in photos by proud and sometimes first-time Nanas. I still get a lump in my throat when I look at my greatgrandchildren and grandchildren.

I deliberately never make any new year resolutions but I was resident of the day on January 1 and staff weighed me (would you believe that) and then new year resolutions just poured out of my mouth!

Gisborne Oaks farewells Barb and welcomes Jean The Residential Aged Care Manager at Gisborne Oaks, Barb Parke, left us at the end of January and we would like to thank Barb for her enormous contribution and commitment to residents and staff.

We welcome our new manager, Jean Prout, who started with us in January. Jean joins MRH from Sunbury Community Health. Jean has previously held clinical management roles with Melbourne Health and Western Health. We are fortunate to have a manager of Jean’s accomplishments joining our ranks.

Urgent care available at Kyneton The Urgent Care Centre at Kyneton Hospital is available to all Macedon Ranges residents. It is led by specialist nurses who are known as RIPERNs: Rural and Isolated Practice Endorsed Registered Nurses.

The skilled and friendly nursing team is available 24 hours a day to respond to and treat urgent care needs.

During 2013-14 this team cared for over 2500 patients.

RIPERNs have additional training over and above their registered nurse training. They are allowed by law to practise in specific contexts, adhering to strict guidelines. So a RIPERN may be able to treat you for basic infections, such as tonsillitis, a common cold and toothache. A cuppa for your thoughts Kyneton District Health (KDH) is rolling out a 'Tea for Ten' community project across the shire. KDH is keen to know what people think, know about and want from its health services.

At morning teas across the Macedon Ranges, KDH is inviting groups of 10 people to talk and give their thoughts on three key questions about the service.

Over a cuppa, trained hosts guide frank and open conversations based on these questions. A scribe takes anonymous notes so that KDH can gather community perceptions.

Pilot conversations in Woodend and Kyneton have shown that the information gathered is incredibly valuable. KDH is now seeking others to get involved and host a kitchen tea in the other towns of the shire.

New learner car arrives Cobaw Community Health launched the new L2P Learner Driver Program car in December at Kyneton Toyota. The car had been written off in August after being hit by another car while parked outside the Kyneton Police Station.

Generous donations and fundraising have enabled Cobaw to cover the insurance gap payment.

Cobaw would like to acknowledge the support of local businesses, organisations and community members which has enabled the L2P program to continue operating at full capacity.

L2P helps young people in the Macedon Ranges who do not have access to a car or supervisor to gain the 120 hours of compulsory driving before going for their licence. Since its inception the highly successful program has assisted 64 young people to gain their licences.

On the prevention side, the Macedon Ranges population scores well with low smoking rates and moderate levels of exercise. The region gets top marks when it comes to surviving heart attacks, with rates 40% better than the state average.

Dr Kennedy attributes improvements in outcomes to drug and treatment developments, better access to care and the impact of prevention programs. Local care options and proximity to complex stent procedures in Melbourne means that people of the Macedon Ranges are well placed. Dr Kennedy sees education and prevention as critical to continuing the positive trend.

He also called for wider availability of defibrillators in the local area.

Birds of the Macedon Ranges 11 Ron Weste found a family of long-billed corellas feeding around the base of the trees opposite Gardiners Garage in December.

They have a sentinel warning system with a couple of the birds sitting in nearby trees ready to warn those on the ground of any danger. This is the 11th photograph in our series featuring local birds.

The 2015 Garden Club committee are looking forward to running another excellent program this year.

Gisborne Garden Club It certainly seems some time back now, but the Garden Club’s last meeting was the Christmas lunch on December 10, at which 60 members shared a scrumptious meal, plenty of enjoyable chatter, and the fun of the possibility of winning one of the 26 prizes in the raffle! Altogether a very happy and friendly day to round off what, once again, had been a very successful and enjoyable year for the club.

This year’s program looks equally as enjoyable, and we look forward to meeting members and visitors on Wednesday February 11 for our first meeting for 2015. All financial members should have received a copy of this year’s program but, if not, please contact a committee member.

Pruning roses in the Daly Heritage Orchard.

News from Friends of Daly Reserve This group has been very active working with council to minimise perceived hazards in the nature reserve while protecting the large number of indigenous plants that are naturally regenerating.

In the Daly heritage orchard, work has begun with council and Friends deadheading and pruning roses. The area is being mapped and plant varieties identified. We are looking forward to visits from a number of heritage societies.

Friends of Daly Nature Reserve are discovering a lot of impressive information about the Daly family and how important they have been in the history of the Gisborne area.

The impressive Western Hemlock on a foggy Macedon day.

Hi Everyone The early January rain in our area was a real blessing; I think I appreciated it as much as the garden!

There is plenty with Chris Williams happening in the garden at Bolobek; the vegetable garden is in full swing for summer. We have been picking some superb strawberries and red currants. There have been crops of garlic, spring onions, rocket, carrots and some very tasty parsnips.

When I was young I used to dread my father’s parsnips. Now that we have better parsnip recipes, I find that I can’t get enough of them!

The stone fruit in the orchard is developing nicely.

The trees have been netted because the marauding parrots will take the lot if we are not careful. The same parrots made a meal of our hybrid tea roses in early summer and we are only now getting some good flushes of flowers.

In my garden at home on Mt Macedon, I have been planting a collection of large coniferous trees. There are specimens of Californian Redwood, Atlas Cedar and Deodar, Blue Spruce and Korean Fir. My favourite conifer is the Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla).

The Western Hemlock can grow to over 30 metres tall and it has beautiful lime green new growth with a silver underside in spring.

Harry Moffitt Gisborne

C

harles Cogger arrived at Mount Macedon with his wife and baby Thomas in 1864 and set up Cogger’s Coach services that ran from Macedon Railway Station.

They lived at “The Laurels” Mount Macedon where they developed a large garden and orchard.

Thomas was educated and worked at Mount Macedon. He married Evelyn Sophia Cavalier, who was a domestic at Government Cottage at Mount Macedon, and they moved to Green Hills, Kyneton. Thomas and Evelyn’s oldest son Carl Raymond Cogger also farmed at Green Hills.

Carl was 24 and single when he enlisted on August 18, 1914. He embarked from Melbourne on October 19 on the “Wiltshire” with the rank of Sergeant in the 4th Light Horse Regiment.

Carl Cogger served in Egypt and returned to Australia on December 18, 1918. He died at Benalla in 1966.

Carl and his wife Emmie O’Callaghan, whom he married in Sydney after the war, had three children, Raymond Stephen Charles, Sydney Edward and Evelyn Marguerite Cogger.

arry Lowry Moffitt was the son of George Lowry and Rebecca Moffitt who lived at “The Willows” Gisborne and ran a tailor’s and drapery shop in Aitken Street.

Harry, who was an accountant working with the firm Densham and Sherlock in Melbourne when war broke out, enlisted at Melbourne on March 29, 1915, aged 32 years and single. On enlistment he was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 21st Battalion, 3rd reinforcement. Local soldiers were usually given a send-off and a gift, and though Harry was unable to attend the send-off, his father went and received a silver-mounted pipe on his behalf. Harry embarked on the “Anchises” on August 26.

On October 22 of that year, Harry was hospitalised with dysentery and jaundice and was later sent to a convalescent depot from where he was discharged in January 1916.

He was to be invalided home but according to later newspaper reports he pleaded to be allowed to return to active service.

Harry wrote to his father in March asking him to send the Saturday Argus to read during down-time in the trenches, which prompted George to write angrily to the army about mail deliveries: he had been sending the paper every week since his son went overseas and it clearly wasn’t making it through to him.

Harry showed great leadership qualities and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on May 11, 1916. Sadly, he was killed at Fleurbaix, France, on July 19, 1916, while attempting to assist Colonel Ignatius Norris who was hit during an assembly on the second enemy line on the front at Fromelles.

Reports indicated that Lieutenant Moffitt was hit by machinegun fire and died instantly, falling over the body of the Colonel whom he was trying to save.

The area where these attacks occurred was retaken by the enemy the next morning and Harry Moffitt’s body was not recovered.

In his short career serving his country, Harry was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

A letter from the Army stated that as he was listed on the German death list, it is believed that the enemy found his pay book and identification disc on his body and buried this brave officer in an unmarked grave at Fromelles.

Of course there is already heaps of holiday homework due, and the workload will be huge this year. So this will be my last column for the Gisborne Gazette because of all of the extra study I’ll be doing this year. I won’t have time to write the column along with managing everything else.

people ask: how can I work towards hitting my goals?

Well, here are my five top tips: 1. List your goals and make sure you are specific and put a time frame on them (otherwise it will be ‘one day, someday’).

2. Create visual reminders, both external (things like a vision board, a box – anything that appeals to you) and internal (so use all your senses to actually imagine your goals happening as if now).

3. Get out of your comfort zone, start becoming OK with being uncomfortable, live on that edge as much as you can and once you feel comfortable, move out of that zone.

4. Undertake new things – one or two (as a minimum) each week.

5. Truly believe you can make it happen; no matter what other people advise or tell you, do not deviate from your goal.

Tourism Excellence Workshop

The ’Rook Revisited with Shirley McKeown The following information has been taken from a copy of ‘My School Days at Bullengarook” written in 2007 by Richard Haire. I have not been able to copy all of this document word-for-word as it is quite extensive, however I am sure you will enjoy Richard’s memories.

Bullengarook East Primary School 1941 – 1947 By the time I started school in 1941 the enrolment had declined to low double figures. Only two of the eight members of the Haire Family were at school during my time there, and for one year there were three of the Morris family but the mainly large Catholic families of earlier decades were leaving the district. The exodus was inevitable as farms were far too small to hold the number of children who grew up on them.

I was six years old when I started school. There was no prep grade then but there were two extra grades, 7 and 8. The glittering prize at the end of primary schooling was the Merit Certificate. This was to change however and by the time I finished my primary education just after WW2, the idea of secondary education was looming as possible and desirable. The post-war expansion of secondary education was beginning and school buses made it possible for children from places like Bullengarook to attend secondary schools.

I had to walk about one and a half kilometres from the Haire farm at “Little Hill” to the school.

There were at least three ways we could go: around the roads (the longest), through the paddocks or through the bush. In 1941 my sister Josie was in her last year at the school. It must have been annoying for her to have to carry me home sometimes on her back. I was prone to bilious attacks in those days, especially in the hot weather.

Of the three main routes to school from our farm “Little Hill”, the most exciting was through the bush.

This walk took us close to Mick Kays’ mill, a couple of hundred metres off Haires Road near a small creek.

I remember one occasion on my way to school being given a ride on Stan O’Connor’s Caterpillar tractor which was used to move logs around the mill yard.

There was beauty in the bush which was obvious even to my young eyes: red and white heath in the winter months, wattles in the late winter and early spring and of course various eucalypts. It was always exciting to see kangaroos and wallabies and very occasionally a fox. My dread though was snakes.

Hardly a summer passed without sightings – once in the school yard which caused great consternation.

Helping children deal with tragedy Sadly, there has been a lot of tragedy and loss over recent months with Natasha Boyd which may have resulted in children trying to cope with new kinds of thoughts and emotions.

Considering this, it is perhaps timely to suggest a few children’s titles about being open to other cultures, being strong and ways to grieve.

The Bus Is For Us by Rosen Michael is a new February release and ties in perfectly with the #I’ll Ride With You campaign inspired by the horrific events of the Lindt Café siege in Sydney.

Nana in the City by Lauren Castillo deals with overcoming being scared of the city. The classic picture books The Sneetches by Dr Seuss, One World Together by Catherine Anholt and Whoever You Are by Mem Fox all explore the themes of tolerance and unity. Friendly Day by Mij Kelly looks at being inclusive.

Todd Parr has two books The Peace Book and It’s Okay to be Different that are filled with bright images and simple statements that celebrate diversity with messages about selfacceptance and understanding. Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth focuses on kindness, generosity, and anger management in a fable-like manner.

Kathryn Otoshi’s “One” uses colours and numbers to subtly teach kids about accepting each other’s differences and how it sometimes just takes one voice to make everyone count.

The Memory Tree by Britta Breckentrup gently looks at remembering people after death. Don’t Be Sad by Lisa Sam Regan, William Worrydactyl by Brian Moses and When I’m Feeling Scared (or Sad) by Trace Moroney all help children explore their own feelings of loss or melancholy. The Scar by Charlotte Moundlic looks at how a little boy responds to his mother’s death in a genuine, deeply moving story.

A Terrible Thing Happened by Margaret M. Holmes features a raccoon named Sherman who meets someone who helps him talk about the terrible (undisclosed) thing he saw, and makes him feel better.

Teachers and parents who are dealing with grieving teens may find Elizabeth Vercoe’s guide book Grief Book: Strategies for young people and Liz Crowe’s Little Book of Loss & Grief most beneficial.

Cemetery walk wakens old memories The Gisborne Genealogical Group held a fascinating twilight cemetery walk led by Eddie Gardiner for its last event on November 27.

To highlight specific headstones Eddie had the assistance of a laser pointer for the evening, which you might term new technology, and a runner in the form of Bob Morton, who you might term ‘old technology’.

With their help, the crowd of about 60 people learnt much about the cemetery itself, about headstone design and meaning, as well as hearing many entertaining – and sometimes very sad – stories of cemetery ‘residents’.

Two open grassed areas of the

cemetery hold possibly hundreds of unmarked graves. In 2010 the sections were scraped back to about a foot below the surface to reveal the outlines of early graves. The names of some of the people buried there appear in early records but precise details of who is where are not recorded.

Eddie spoke about another cemetery that was marked out in Gisborne in 1852. This burial ground was near Brady Road but no one knows whether it was ever used.

The earliest marked grave in the current cemetery is that of John Lidderdale, who died in 1858.

Lidderdale was a Scot who came to

Australia for his health but died from TB at the age of 29. Unfortunately his grave was one of several vandalised last year and the headstone lies broken on top of the grave.

Four of the cemetery’s old sextons (caretakers) are buried at Gisborne.

The sextons used to live on-site in a little cottage just inside the gates.

Bob Morton’s father was one of those sextons so having lived at the cemetery as a youngster Bob was well equipped to help in guiding the enthralled visitors.

This was the first such walk Eddie has guided but with its great success hopefully it won’t be the last.

Talk on tracing ancestors in foreign countries Our guest speaker at the first meeting of the Gisborne Genealogical Group for the year will be Diana Hookham on the topic ‘Lost in Translation – researching ancestors in foreign countries’.

Lyn Hall I heard Diana give this presentation at the State Library last year and it was excellent. I asked if she would come to Gisborne with the same presentation and she agreed. Even though I have no ancestors from the countries she spoke about (Italy, Egypt and Turkey) I found her talk very informative and very entertaining.

The talk will be followed by supper. Visitors are always

Gisborne Primary farewells teachers Gisborne Primary School officially farewelled two teachers at the end of the 2014 school year: Adriana Torkar, who moved to Killara Primary in Sunbury, and Peter Kane, who retired after 36 years of teaching – 25 of them at Gisborne Primary.

It is no coincidence that a Mrs (Carol) Kane departed New Gisborne Primary on the same day, as the husband-and-wife duo, who met through the profession, prepare for a future of travelling adventures.

The ‘welcome’ list at our school is exceptionally lengthy this year, so here goes: Kimberley Sucevic and Caitlin Wilkinson to Grade Prep, Gary Perrott to Grade 1/2, Rachael Wilson to Grade 3/4, Tahnee Perry and Ewen Hildebrand to Grade 5/6 and Rebecca Underwood to the newly created Grade Prep LOTE (Italian) position. Lisha Nash returns as Assistant Principal for three days per week and Bree Scott to Art. End-of-year celebration days took on a slightly different structure in 2014, with students enjoying a variety of special events including movies, art/construction activities and sporting pursuits. The local chip shops were presented with some significant challenges, with orders comfortably exceeding $100. Icy pole supplies were also exhausted at some local supermarkets.

Grade Six students graduated to the tune of Que Sera by Justice Crew – not to be confused with Doris Day’s Que Sera, Sera, though the sentiments are somewhat similar!

New year, new adventure!

2015 is set to be an amazing year at New Gisborne Primary School. The Prep students will have a Year 6 buddy to make them feel welcome. We Year Sixers will spend time with them and help them make goodies on special days such as Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and for Christmas. However, sadly, towards the end of the year we will spend less time together because they will need to rely on themselves with the Year 6s leaving at the end of the year. But our buddies are the ones we will NEVER forget. I still remember my buddy and my friend’s buddy who lives across the road from me. If you take care of your buddy, it will be a memory that will last forever in your heart.

As a part of being a Year Sixer we get a special Super Sixers jacket and top. Eight students will be chosen as school leaders to represent our school and, among other things, those leaders will conduct assemblies. I think all we new Year 6 students are really looking forward to everything about being at the top of the school – finally!

The Maryanne Mooney Excellence in Careers Services Perpetual Trophy for 2014 is given for building a strong career development culture in a school and, through a variety of programs, providing students with the skills to navigate the ever-changing world of further training, education and work.

It recognises the commitment the school is making to acknowledge the importance of quality career

development for young people.

This award recognises the work of Gisborne Secondary College’s high-performing careers development team led

by Mr John Horley. The award acknowledges work that spans career counselling, work and study skills preparation, work experience and work readiness, School Based Apprenticeships, Certificate Courses and structured work placements for VET and VCAL units.

Over the past five years the teaching and support staff – Adrian Pang, Kerry Huke, Karen Hume, Sharona Smith, Jenny McCarthy, Frances Hayes, David Butler, Kushum Rattan and Ian Huke – have developed an integrated approach to careers and pathways development for students to help them achieve the best possible results.

Rotary Interact Charter Night The College congratulates the 24 students involved in the Interact Group via Gisborne Rotary.

A charter night was held at the Gisborne Golf Club on November 25 when students received their certificate of organisation, their badge and polo shirt which confirm their membership on the Interact Club.

Students have been working hard and have already raised close to $2500 towards a mental health program for Year 11 students. The group is hoping to work with local wildlife and animal protection groups and they are also planning a trip to Vietnam this year.

The group is facilitated by GSC teacher Heather Dear and Rotary member Patti Yarwood. Fundraising has also been assisted this year by Bennett House and teacher Justin Rodda through events at the College.

School Captains Matthew Sparks and Sarah Edwards will begin their ‘What’s On at GSC’ column next month.

Owen, Brooke and I have been working on the ‘On the Ball’ program that Essendon Football Club runs, alongside the Bendigo Bank, Bill Hutchinson Foundation and the Para-Olympic Society.

We wanted to focus on the positive side of mental health and harm prevention, rather than looking at depression, anxiety and the negative side to mental health.

We decided on the topic of “Healthy Mind = Healthy Body. And a Healthy Me Makes Me Smile”. For our project we ran multiple workshops at St Brigid’s Primary School with all Year 3/4s promoting healthy eating, exercise and brain gym.

We competed against four other schools and presented in front of a panel of three judges. It was such a good experience and we are all so grateful that we were a part of this competition.

Gisborne club packs a punch at Nationals Qualifying athletes from Gisborne Mixed Martial Arts club competed in the Australian Martial Arts Championships in Sydney over the weekend of November 29-30. Following its massive success at the State titles in October, the club cemented its arrival as a force on the Australian martial arts circuit with major placings at the National titles.

Unforeseen absences in the squad (including an attack of appendicitis the day before departure) did not dampen the fighting spirit of the athletes.

Dominique Lopreti took out third in both points and freestyle sparring in the female under 18s Advanced Division, while Daniel Beinat claimed 3rd and 4th places in the male under 18s traditional forms and freestyle sparring competition.

Lachlan Shore placed third in freestyle sparring and Nicole Pliatsiaris fourth in points sparring – both in the 11-12 yrs Intermediate division.

James Gentles along with sisters Georgia and Hannah Monk performed well in Junior Sumo and Sword combat competition with second, fourth and fifth placings respectively.

The club has an exciting 2015 lined up with athletes now to participate in training camps with the Australian Squad in Queensland and NSW. In addition, outstanding performances by seniors Scott Csanyi and Dean Monk at Grading on December 14 saw the two achieve Black Belt status, and pave the way for next year’s Black Belt 2nd Dan gradings of Jake Bogg and juniors Dominique Lopreti and Henry Mick Wilson Wilson.

Our Christmas celebrations have come and gone, but a lovely day was held to celebrate the end of 2014. Thanks to everyone who helped and a special mention to the ladies of Macedon CWA for a beautiful feast in a lovely setting.

Welcome to the New Year everyone. I hope that 2015 brings all that you could wish for such as great croquet, much fun and good competition. As a club I am sure we can deliver all of the above.

Lots of good things are about to happen, including the next rounds of our club championship, another special social day next month and of course our great Easter raffle.

Mt Macedon Petanque Club The members have been busy, planning for teams to participate in the upcoming petanque calendar, including the National Doubles to be held at Caulfield Park. Two of our members, Lindsay Kinghorn and Danny Green, are to umpire the event, in which up to 50 teams from around Australia will compete.

February 14 and 15 will see four of our members at Coonawarra in South Australia for Australia’s largest petanque tournament.

Bridie and Hayden Kinghorn participated in a junior four-day training clinic with a renowned coach from Thailand. Bridie is representing Australia against New Zealand at the Trans Tasman tournament to be held at Avoca in March.

Please note the club has changed its daylight savings play day to Wednesday evening from 5pm.

Everyone is welcome to come and try petanque on Wednesday evenings and the second and fourth Saturday mornings from 10am. All equipment is supplied along with expert coaching.

All you need is covered-in footwear and a ‘come and try’ attitude.

Cycling Classic: the Butler did it Gisborne’s James Butler took part in the 2015 Michelton Bay Cycling Classic in early January.

James was the winner of the first race of the day (the John Cornish Memorial Support Race), Geelong.

James, of Giant Hampton, attacked from the outset in the 45-minute event, to achieve the victory over fellow breakaway member James Love.

On the final day of racing at Williamstown, James was placed third and therefore achieved an overall second.

James, among other things, is a life guard at Gisborne Aquatic Centre.

Gisborne Tennis Club The summer season has seen some excellent tennis with all teams doing well. Teams returned at the end of January. The ladders look interesting with the Gisborne A2 Vipers doing well in second place and the B2 Bandicoots coming third.

Fly fishing for Australian native fish Ben Levagueresse gave our last talk for 2014 on the techniques and equipment he uses to catch Australian native fish such as Murray Cod and Yellowbelly.

The cod flies he uses are distinct from the usual trout drys and wets. They feature bold colours, prominent eyes and, on some, the added feature of a guard to limit snagging hooks on weeds or logs. (See some of the flies he ties and read an amusing and informative report on the Loddon native fly fishing trip by member Andrew Martin on our website.)

Ben’s talk included stream structure, fish locations, and fly presentation e.g. for cod the fly should be slapped onto Ben Levagueresse the water to attract the cod and arouse its hunger or aggression – a dramatically different technique to trout fishing. Another interesting detail was the cod’s mouth cavitating to take a surface fly.

John Guljas gave an informative talk and demonstration on First Aid and the appropriate kit required to manage snake bite.

Christmas lunch and Ladies Presentation Day

The end of year celebrations saw a large gathering of past and present golfers plus ladies who have enjoyed the clinics at the club, all entering into the spirit of the day by appearing on course in a wide range of Christmas attire. They ated in the top 100 public access coursesofinrelaxing Australia golf, plus a very popular enjoyed nine holes declared wildlife sanctuary a very friendly, oriented Club visit and from two of family Santa’s helpers offering champagne, orange juice, strawberries and sweets.

Riley Vernon is a top order bat, leading run scorer and player of the series in last year’s U13 country week rep team.

Sam Ramsay is an opening fast bowler; he represented Victoria in Under 12 School Sports team last year.

Harry Jones is a genuine all rounder, Under 13 country week rep last year.

Braden Spear is a high quality leg spin bowler; first-time selection in representative cricket.

The final day at Bullengarook Specialist School saw the graduating Year 12s make an emotional farewell to their fellow students and teachers.

Recent rains have perked up fairways, and well-maintained greens are rewarding to putt on. The club’s individual matchplay competition is now under way following completion of the qualifying round in December. This cherished title will be claimed in April as knock-out rounds proceed.

The now not so new par 5 ninth hole is very much part of playing 18 holes at MMGC. Backfilling and turfing of the elevated tee has been a stunning achievement and added a new and welcome dimension to the course.

It has been refreshing to have several new members join across

all categories in recent months.

T20 cricketers aim for title Gisborne Dragons T20 – The club defeated Golden Point Cricket Club in the Central Highlands first semi-final at Cricket Willow oval, near Daylesford, on January 18 and were to play Campbells Creek in the Grand Final on Australia Day.

Taekwondo team shines On the weekend of December 5-7, 13 members of Gisborne Taekwondo attended the national Championships in Adelaide. This is the biggest taekwondo competition held in Australia with close to 2000 students competing.

Gisborne Taekwondo came away with six gold, seven silver and six bronze medals. It was a good effort by the students – for most it was their first nationals. Making the trip were Sarah Bottcher, Darcy Kappel, Eleanor Kappel, Dier Crosbie, Max Martucci, Blake Martucci, Lauren Zarkov, Jack Ellis, Bailey Walsh, Alyssa

New coach for Gisborne Under 18s The Gisborne Football Netball Club is pleased to announce that Damian Slater has been appointed Under 18 Coach for the 2015 season.

Damian has been a member of the club since 2008 as a player, administrator and as the 2010 Reserves coach and 2011 Reserves premiership player. He has a rich history with country Victorian football, having represented Wodonga, Eaglehawk, Mitta United and Colbinabbin Football clubs before coming to Gisborne in 2008.

Slater was the 1993 Bendigo Pioneers captain and was a Rookie Listed Melbourne player in 1994 before returning to carve out a 20year career in country Victoria.

The club also congratulates Pat McKenna who has postponed a very promising career in cricket after being drafted by Greater Western Sydney.

Leader’s dedication rewarded Recently Ken Bryce, a Scout Leader with 1st Macedon, received the Silver Wattle award for outstanding service to the Scouting community.

The award was presented by the Chief Commissioner of Scouts Australia Reg Williams.

The citation reads: “Ken’s ‘Old School’ teaching and knowledge are his finest skills that he offers our youth. His ongoing dedication to let the community know that Scouting is alive and well is not something that we see enough of.

“Without committed people such as Ken flying the Scouting flag, we would not have the knowledge base for our youth of today.

Gisborne Scout Leaders Jasmine, Heather and Carly represented 1st Gisborne scouting group with a stall at the Zipper Chickys’ heart health fundraiser last year at the Steam Park.

In February the Ramblers will continue to meet on Friday mornings at 9.15 at the Gisborne tennis courts at Dixon Field. We always welcome new walkers.

As confirmed by recent taxation pronouncements, money or other assets transferred out of a company as part of a divorce settlement are treated as a dividend and will have tax consequences to the recipient.

Case Study Jack and Jill are divorcing and run a company worth $2 million. This is their only matrimonial asset. Jack is the sole director and shareholder. The Family Court Order requires Jill to be paid $1 million from the company.

The company raises $1 million in cash through borrowing and pays it to Jill. Jack retains control of the company as part of the settlement.

Jill is deemed to have received a dividend of $1 million and tax is payable at marginal rates. Franking credits may be attached at the discretion of the director.

Had the settlement been by way of transferring property to Jill this would still represent a dividend to Jill. There would also be Capital Gains Tax (CGT) consequences.

News from Owners of dogs at large prosecuted Several repeated incidents of dogs escaping their properties have resulted in prosecutions in the Kyneton Magistrate’s Court with fines in excess of $1,000 being imposed.

Eighty per cent of dog attacks in public places could be prevented if all dogs were adequately confined. By securing your dog, you are also keeping them safe from traffic, injuries or fights with other dogs. Your yard must have a closed gate and an escape-proof fence that your dog cannot jump, get under or through. Information on responsible ownership can be found at mrsc.vic. gov.au or depi.vic.gov.au, or Council service centres.

Residents are encouraged to report unsecured or wandering dogs immediately by calling 5422 0333.

Forty years later and mystery lives on Celebrate Valentine’s Day and the 40th anniversary of Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock at a twilight viewing of the film on Saturday February 14. Free entertainment at cultural season launch

Council buys land for sports reserve To meet future demand in the shire’s largest and fastest-growing township, Macedon Ranges Shire Council has acquired about 12 hectares in New Gisborne for additional sporting ovals long term.

The land is at the corner of Hamilton and Barringo Roads, directly opposite the new netball complex. Once funds become available, the land will house two full-size sporting ovals, a pavilion, a playground and parking facilities.

The construction of these facilities is

some years away, and will need to be funded with a combination of council, sporting club, and state and federal government funding.

This year, Council will begin preparing a planning scheme amendment to rezone the land from Rural Conservation to Public Park and Recreation Zone.

Following this, a master plan for the sports reserve that also considers traffic management throughout the area will be developed, which will be informed by broad community consultation.

Over 1,000km out of a total 1,700km of council roadsides were slashed before the fire season began. VicRoads is responsible for slashing the Calder Freeway and all major arterial roads.

For all other roads, Council is the responsible authority.

A cut roadside may help to slow a fire, but unfortunately it is not effective as a firebreak in extreme conditions and high winds as experienced in February last year.

Regrowth will be monitored over the fire season and if appropriate a second cut will be completed in high risk areas.

How many people will live in the shire in 15 years? In 25 years? Where will most people live? These and many more questions can be answered using Council’s new online population and household forecasts prepared by .id (informed decisions).

The Macedon Ranges Shire Population Forecasts will help us understand how the population, age structure and household types will change each year between now and 2036. The population forecasts are available on Council’s website mrsc.vic. gov.au/population

Streetscape works have begun in Brantome Street and Hamilton Streets.

The works include feature seating, construction of speed humps, reconstruction of the footpath with an asphalt surface, installation of environmentally friendly tree pits, and upgrade of underground drainage.

The $400,000 project is jointly funded by the Victorian Government and Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

The works are scheduled to take two months to complete. Some disruption to the traders and the general public is to be expected.

Lodge supports Mirabel Foundation The Mirabel Foundation was established in 1998 and is the only organisation in Australia that specifically supports children who have been orphaned or abandoned as a result of parental illicit drug use.

children throughout Victoria and NSW. Recently, Sunbury cyclist Vaughn McCarthy, who is the son-in-law of the Master of the Gisborne Lodge, Darryl Young, rode in the annual Tour de Bress 130km bike ride from Melbourne to Bress Winery in Harcourt.

Uniting Church in pancake fundraiser We said goodbye to Rev Andrew Gall, his wife Kareen and their children at the end of December. We wish Andrew well in his new calling at Ouyen.

As followers of Jesus we seek to show compassion to those less fortunate. We were delighted that Foodworks allowed us to have a trolley in the shop before Christmas to collect food for those doing it hard. A very big thank you to all those generous customers who filled the trolley with goods. This food, along with the weekly donations given by our congregation, went to Lentara Care where it was very warmly received.

Together we helped to make Christmas a bit brighter for those in need. ● We will be flipping pancakes on February 14 to raise funds for under-privileged people. Join us outside the IGA centre from 9.30am to 12.30pm. It is an opportunity to enjoy a pancake while supporting Uniting Care, an organisation that helps more than two million Australians each year.

Op shop jottings St Paul’s Op Shop reopened on Tuesday January 27 after a four week Christmas/New Year break.

All of our volunteers in the shop and sorting shed welcomed the break and are looking forward to the coming year.

The garage sale held on January 17 was very successful and many bargains were snapped up soon after the door was opened.

Opening times remain Tuesday and Saturdays 10am-1pm and Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 10am-4pm.

100 Years Ago From the pages of the old Gisborne Gazette February 1915 The Gisborne Rain Gauge – Cr. Pierce, it appears, has discovered the shire rain gauge, which had not been heard of for years. It is over ten years since the council purchased the gauge and since then there have been no records kept. It was discovered the glass was broken, certainly not from use. However a new glass is to be got, and Mr Hollow will take the records at New Gisborne so there is a possibility of reliable records of the Gisborne rainfall being at last furnished to the public.

The Howey Celebration – This celebration will be remembered in Gisborne on account of the muster of old identities on Monday last. The Poet wrote:“Lives there a man with soul so dead As never to himself hath said This is my own, my native land.”

The spirit of the poet, beyond doubt, animated many of the visitors who took advantage of the occasion to revisit the scenes of their boyhood. Dr O’Donnell’s brilliant oration touched many a chord, and even the oldest residents, who are ending their lives where they began, were impressed with the worthy doctor’s remarks.

Public Men – It is almost a coincidence that within the space of a fortnight the townships of Gisborne and Sunbury should be unveiling monuments to men who had done something to merit public recognition. Henry Howey sent a mob of sheep and cattle overland from Sydney in 1837, and bought a site, now the centre of Melbourne, for £120, which is estimated to be worth about a million and half, and from which his descendants in Scotland are drawing large rents. Joseph Starkie, a native of the district, failed to amass great wealth, but worked hard for the welfare of Sunbury for the greater part of his life. An active and energetic man, with good business capacity, he gave his best to advance the interests of his town. It was mainly through his efforts that Sunbury got a good water system and an electric lighting scheme. All honour to the old pioneers, but men like Joseph Starkie do more good in their time than many who blaze the track.

War News – The attack on Egypt and the Canal, as we predicted, has fizzled out.

Even the Germans admit that the invasion of Egypt has been abandoned, though, with their usual brag, they assert that small forces may make raids occasionally. The object of the Germans in planning this attack was to hold as many British troops as possible away from the great Western battle front.

In this they have been partially successful for, including the Australians, there must be nearly 100,000 troops in Egypt and the Canal. In any case 100,000 men is a very small number in a fighting line that runs into millions.

Do you really need to use the lawnmower in the heat of the day?

The CFA suggests that it would be better if this could be carried out early in the morning or later in the evening when conditions may have changed.

CFA District 02 Operations Officer Chris Jacobsen said that “now the Fire Danger Period is in force and Total Fire Ban days are being declared, when using mowers and other machinery such as welders and grinders, you need to take extra care and consideration.”

He said some fires had already been started by mowers alone. “A bit of careful thought will save the number of times CFA members are called out to an incident,” he said Regarding general machinery, he said “Putting in a bit of time now to ensure your machinery is fitted with a spark arrestor that meets current standards could save you a lot of hassle down the track.

Taking an extra five or ten minutes can make all the difference, especially when using tools that cause sparks. Clear the area of anything flammable, make sure adequate water is on hand to extinguish a fire if necessary and most importantly that you have the capacity to extinguish a fire.

“Lawn mowers are common offenders when it comes to starting preventable fires.”

Mr Jacobsen said “the single most important thing you can do is not to mow on windy days. If you must, do so in the cool of the morning or in the evening, but not when wind is forecast or on hot dry days. Even on cool days, in dry grass, fires can start and run quickly in windy conditions.”
