Australia Day in Gisborne Australia Day was enthusiastically celebrated at John Aitken Reserve with singing led by the Gisborne Singers, games for the kids and the young at heart, a pageant tracing the evolution of the Australian flag, Graeme Millar’s Australian-themed quiz, speeches from Mary-Anne Thomas MP and the South Ward councillors – Mandy Mees, Helen Radnedge and Andrew Twaits – and all topped up with a generous cooked breakfast prepared and served by the stalwarts of the Bullengarook Fire Brigade.

Thanks again to the members of the GREAT Association for all their hard work in organising this annual event.

Council survey There are lots of important notices from Council in this edition and one that I particularly want to draw your attention to is on page 13 – the survey concerning the development of the Council Plan 2017-2021. All of us have opinions about what council should or shouldn’t be doing so let them know your ideas by completing this survey by February 12.

Clean Up Australia Sunday March 5 Do your bit for the local environment by registering a group through the Clean Up Australia website. There are certainly lots of local areas that need ‘delittering’.

Alternatively you can help the Scouts and the Friends of Daly Reserve in their efforts. See their notice on page 26.

Australia Day Awards Congratulations to all those who were honoured

by Council especially South Ward residents Cherry Servis and Juli Robinson. Cherry is one of the founding members of the Woodend Lifestyle Carers’ Group and has had a long involvement with the Mount Players. Juli is enthusiastically involved in everything to do with the Bullengarook community.

Flea Market One of the great social events of the year is the Macedon Fire Brigade’s Flea Market and Auction. Do yourself a favour by getting along to this fun event on Saturday February 25. You’re sure to pick up amazing bargains too.

Hi everyone, and a belated but warm welcome to 2017.

I want to start by thanking the GREAT Gisborne Gazette for continuing the tradition of inviting the South Ward Councillors to contribute to this column each month. Hopefully Mandi, Helen and I can use this opportunity to give you some insights into what we’re working on inside the Council environment and, importantly, where we could use your input to help us devise better plans and achieve better outcomes for the community.

The next four months are going to be particularly busy for councillors. On top of regular Council business, we’re adopting a particularly hands-on approach to formulating the next Council Plan – a document that essentially maps out our strategic priorities and objectives for the shire for at least the next four years.

Many of you will have seen references to a survey that Council published before Christmas seeking initial views from the community about what you see as the priorities for the shire.

The survey is available on the Council website and is open until February 12.

You can also lodge a written submission if you’d prefer. Whatever your preference, I’d encourage you all to have your say at this important early stage in the development of the new Council Plan.

The feedback from the community survey will be synthesised in the second half of February and you can expect the results to feed into a further round of interactive community consultation over March/April.

There are some exciting opportunities on the horizon for the shire, but also some significant challenges as we plan for further population growth and try to catch up with historical underinvestment in community services and infrastructure.

The reality of “rate-capping” means that Council will be forced to drive efficiencies and prioritise the allocation of its resources if we want to deliver on community expectations of a sustainable, high-quality way of life for our residents, a prosperous environment for our local businesses and sympathetic treatment of our natural and built environment.

Ramp closure for Station Road The weather finally dried up enough to allow the Station Road roundabout works to resume in January. Drivers are advised to factor in additional travel time while the Melbourne-bound entry ramp from Station Road to the Calder is temporarily closed.

VicRoads advises there will be two key detours available for those travelling towards Melbourne:  North along the Calder Freeway using the Mt Macedon Road interchange to connect back onto the freeway; or alternatively  Travel south along Station Road through Gisborne, onto Melbourne Road and then connect back onto the freeway at the Melbourne Road interchange.

Weather depending, the ramp is expected to be re-opened to traffic on Monday February 20.

Generous gesture raises $1400

for Variety Club Seven-year-old Ava Hynes, a pupil at New Gisborne Primary, decided to have her long blonde hair cut and donated to the Variety Club to be made into wigs for children suffering alopecia or undergoing cancer treatment.

Through Variety’s website, Ava set up a fundraising account hoping to raise about $100 but was amazed when donations totalling $1400 came in.

Ava passed on the money to Variety to help them with all the great work they do for kids.

Event Management Workshop Whether it’s a fun run, community festival, music event, art show or cycling competition, a key part of a successful event is having an Event Management Plan.

This practical workshop is taking place on Monday February 13 and will provide event organisers with the tools, skills and knowledge to develop a comprehensive Event Management Plan. Topics to be covered include risk, safety and emergency planning along with other key operational matters.

The workshop will be held from 6pm to 9pm at the Kyneton Town Hall. The cost is $25 for two representatives to attend from each community event and places are limited. Feral deer make their home in Gisborne Residents have reported seeing deer around Gisborne recently.

They have been spotted in Station Road, New Gisborne, on Kilmore Road not far from the Bowling Club, and some have been seen at various times at the back of Gardiner Reserve.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council says there has been a feral deer population in the Barringo area and parts of Macedon Regional Park at Mount Macedon for a number of years.

Deer also escaped from a local farm during the 2014 bushfires and it is probably some of these deer that residents may have sighted more recently.

Despite being an introduced species, deer are protected under the Wildlife Act. As such, they are the responsibility of the State Government’s Game Management Authority.

The newly opened refurbished playground at Swinburne Avenue Kindergarten in Gisborne is an and inviting environment that promotes inquiry and play. It features vegetable gardens, organic climbing equipment, pathways, fruit trees, a stage area for performances and more.

Mayor Cr Jennifer Anderson joined councillors, Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas and local families for the official opening of the refurbished playground on December 14.

The project was made possible by a $120,000 grant from the Victorian Government, with Council contributing $10,000 to the project.

New nets for the Dragons The Gisborne Cricket Club and Riddells Creek Cricket Club will benefit from new nets with $100,000 from the State Government’s Growth Corridor Cricket Participation Fund State, Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas recently announced.

This will assist the Gisborne Dragons in replacing the existing nets with six new retractable nets and a fully concreted and carpeted training facility.

The President of the Gisborne Cricket Club, Andrew Headberry, said the new nets would give everyone a much better training experience.

“In the past three to four years our numbers have expanded dramatically; we’ve been bursting at the seams in terms of training and playing facilities”.

Young Gisborne cricket star prepares for India tour 15-year-old-Gisborne Dragons 1st XI player Riley Vernon will embark on a 12-day tour to India with the Young Gun High Performance Cricket Academy in April.

The tour will include eight matches and specialist coaching for Indian conditions, as well as access to IPL fixtures and a dinner at Mumbai Cricket Club.

Prior to that, Riley's focus is on finishing the season with Gisborne where he hopes the Dragons can claim back-to-back McIntrye Cups.

In mid-January, Riley represented the Central Highlands in the Cricket Victoria U16 Male State Championships which were held at various cricket grounds across Melbourne. Unfortunately the Central Highlands boys did not have any team success but personally Riley had a good week, scoring 209 runs in four matches at an average of 69.7 with a top score of 113 not out, which made him the third most prolific run scorer in the Championships.

The Rotary Club of Gisborne will hold another Business Networking and Rotary Promotion evening on Tuesday, March 21 at the Gisborne Golf Club at 7pm.

This forum will provide an opportunity for business people in the Macedon Ranges to interact in an informal environment and hear interesting speakers from a variety of backgrounds.

The evening is hosted by The Rotary Club of Gisborne and guests will be able to appreciate what Rotary achieves both locally and internationally. Those attending will learn how Rotary can promote their business by their enrolment as a Corporate Rotary Member.

Members of Woodend Lifestyle Carers Group enjoyed a pre-Christmas wine and cheese hour with their new Patron, Athol Guy AO, and councillors Helen Radnedge, Mandi Mees and Janet Pearce.

They were joined by Gisborne Community Bank’s chairman and former chairman, Graham Stewart and Barry Mullen, and their wives, together with Dr Jenny Grounds.

The evening at Baringo Food & Wine Co in New Gisborne was a delightful opportunity for guests to meet some members of the group’s committee in a relaxed atmosphere on a warm and sunny summer’s evening.

As Patron, Athol has kindly offered to assist WLCG’s respite guesthouse fund-raising project by participating in an Open Garden Concert at Duneira on Mount Macedon, when his group will entertain while members of the public enjoy a BYO picnic on the beautiful lawns of the property.

Gates will open for the event on Sunday, March 5 from 10am to 4pm.

CWA members and guests had a happy break-up lunch following their meeting at the end of last year.

Happy New Year to all from Gisborne CWA The state CWA theme for this year is 'Share the Friendship'. Let’s hope we can find some new friends to encourage to join CWA and spread the word about all the good things that CWA does in the community. At our last meeting a cheque for $1400 was presented to the Oaks nursing home, which was the result of our Christmas hamper raffle. The lucky winners were Pauline Shepherd and Holly Bennett.

We had a relaxed Christmas lunch at the Vic Hotel after our December meeting.

Early in January we had a fun day at Helen Ryvitch’s home where she has a permanent mini golf course set up.

We enjoyed a nice lunch and a few laughs to start the year.

Our country of study is Denmark this year, so we're looking Christine Edwards forward to learning more about this Scandinavian country.

Don't forget this year’s Creative Arts Exhibition in Sunbury on May 5 and 6. You still have plenty of time to get stitching or making those beautiful bottled preserves.

Our next meeting is on February 13 at 10am at Gisborne Secondary College stadium, and please remember to wear something white.

Pubs rally for Cancer Council Volunteer fixers are needed to help repair dozens of bikes to sell. CFA Capt Greg Snart and Phil Wilkinson lead a battalion of bike riders.

Help needed to deliver pedal power and raise funds for Macedon CFA

Wilkinson’s Wheels is well on its way to delivering pedal power to the masses. Since Phil Wilkinson began his campaign to collect old, unwanted bikes to fix up and sell at the Macedon CFA Flea Market on Saturday February 25, the community has listened, with nearly 200 bikes being donated so far.

“The community has truly embraced what we are doing. The donations of bikes have been phenomenal and we are looking forward to more coming through.

"Once we get these bikes fixed up and sold off at the Flea Market, I’m excited to see Wilkinson Wheels continue as a community workspace for people to come together and tinker away in a Men’s Shed type way,” said founder Phil Wilkinson.

Probus gears up for another good year Another year has flown by and we now look forward to interesting and exciting happenings in 2017. Our monthly meetings resume on February 2 with a mystery speaker and our tour organiser has been busy arranging day trips – usually once a month.

The Christmas party in December, held at the Gisborne Golf Club, was very well attended.

Our thanks to our hard-working committee who put in many voluntary hours to ensure an interesting program of speakers and trips is organised every year.

      

Bikes donated so far include lots of great kids' bikes for those starting off, through to adult bikes purchased with good intentions but left to sit in sheds. Bikes and parts are still being collected, or can be donated directly to Macedon Nursery and Garden supplies in Nursery Road, Macedon, or Woodend Cycles.

There will be two more sessions for fixing up the bikes in the lead-up to the Flea Market: February 4 and February 18 from 2pm to 4pm at Macedon Nursery.

All abilities are encouraged to join in, as there will be experienced bike mechanics on hand to give direction and encouragement! All money raised will go to the brigade. For more information, join the Wilkinson’s Wheels Facebook page or contact Phil on 5426 2281.

The Macedon Railway Hotel and Telegraph Hotel Gisborne have joined other local pubs collecting donations for Cancer Council Victoria.

Patrons can drop their change into the purple donation tins up until the weekend of March 4 and 5 when the 15th Lancefield/Macedon Ranges Relay For Life is held. All of the money raised will support cancer research, education, advocacy and support services.

More than 18 teams have registered for this year’s event which is expected to bring the overall amount of money raised locally since 2003 to $1.3 million.

Organisers are looking forward to a memorable weekend.

An Early Bird $20 per person registration offer closes on February 5 at midnight. Individual and team registrations for $25 per person will be accepted up until the event weekend.

Cancer survivors and carers are warmly invited to walk the opening lap and attend afternoon tea. Passionate about agricultural sector?

The council is seeking interested people to join the Macedon Ranges Agribusiness Forum – a network of representatives from various agricultural sectors that seeks to address challenges, identify opportunities and increase awareness of agribusiness in the region.

Members are required to attended forum meetings, assist in the implementation of projects identified in the Agribusiness Plan 2013-18 in partnership with Council and represent the wider agribusiness community.

Red Cross kicks off with trivia afternoon The first meeting for the new year for the Gisborne Friends of Red Cross is to be held on February 3 in the community rooms, Hamilton Street, Gisborne, starting at 1.30pm. Following a welcome and short meeting, a fun-filled trivia afternoon organised by Neil and Joan Rollason will be held.

This will be followed by an enjoyable afternoon tea.

Year's events on the agenda The Gisborne Auxiliary will be holding the first meeting for the year on Tuesday February 28 starting at 1.30pm in the Gisborne Masonic Lodge Hall. We will be discussing our fund-raising events for the year which help provide vital services and opportunities for children and adults who are blind or have low vision.

The wide range of services offered to children and their families are mostly free of charge. The extra large print calendars for 2017 were again very popular and in total we sold 55.

Author Stuart Kells guest of Friends The Friends of Macedon Ranges Libraries Inc will hold our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday February 21 in the wonderful surrounds of the Stoneman library at Duneira, Officer Lane, Mount Macedon. Morning tea will be served at 10.30am followed by the official business of the AGM. The morning will conclude with a talk by author and antiquarian bookman Stuart Kells. His published work includes the critically acclaimed biography of Kay Craddock, Rare, Penguin and the Lane Brothers and Australian Book Collectors. He speaks regularly and enthusiastically on the history and value of printed books.

Beyond the field of rare books, Stuart has written on regulation and business performance, and has had a diverse career in government, academia and the private sector, including as Victoria’s Assistant AuditorGeneral, as head of the Office of Manufacturing, and in roles at the Melbourne Institute, Potter Warburg and KPMG. Stuart has a PhD in Law from Monash University, and a B.Comm and an M.Comm, both with first class honours, from the University of Melbourne.

He will talk about some treasures in the library and his forthcoming book Libraries of Wonder.

Cool Clutch is a local winner Ecommerce startup Cool Clutch, founded by Gisborne’s Suzanne Carroll, won the top award at the Australia Post-sponsored Pitchfest awards late last year.

Suzanne walked away with $5,000 in prize money to take her venture to the next level.

Cool Clutch manufactures and sells handbags and clutches that contain discreet cooler bag compartments for items as big as a bottle of wine or for something as serious as medication needing to be

kept below a particular temperature.

“The Cool Clutch is perfect for storing food, drinks and medicine, and also features a generous outside side pocket to carry items such as a small purse, keys, phone and lipstick,” said Suzanne during her pitch to the judges in Bendigo.

Exciting year ahead for Young Voices of Macedon At the conclusion of a very successful year in 2016, Young Voices of Macedon participated in a beautiful service of readings and carols at the Church of the Resurrection, Macedon. Combined with the Anglican adult choir, the Cantabile group sang carols by Gustav Holst and John Rutter.

The senior madrigal group performed the delightful French carol Entre le boeuf et l’ane gris, and the junior Vivo group sang The Rocking Carol and Away in a Manger. In addition, the choir performed at three local community carol events.

2017 promises to be another exciting and eventful year, with a performance at Montsalvat in April, workshops with visiting musical leaders, including

the acclaimed conductor and educator Richard Gill, collaboration with the Resonance String Orchestra and a major concert featuring Australian music, some commissioned from local composers.

With a staff of three conductors and a professional accompanist, the choir seeks to provide young people from the age of five with quality music education through choral singing, with emphasis on repertoire from the classical tradition. Rehearsals begin on Thursday February 7 at 4.15pm at the Norma Richardson Hall, Buckland Street, Woodend. New members are very welcome to join us throughout February.

Gisborne Singers back from Carnegie Hall gig The Gisborne Singers have returned from New York having ticked many items off their bucket lists, not the least of which was making their debut at Carnegie Hall.

Twenty-two members of the Macedon Ranges' choir made the trip to New York at the invitation of Distinguished Concerts International New York for the performance on January 16.

There they joined choirs from Wales, England, Washington and New York to perform the North American premiere of Sir Karl Jenkins’ Cantata Memoria, a work that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the mining disaster in the Welsh mining village of Aberfan which claimed the lives of 116 children and 28 adults.

The rehearsals were challenging and exhilarating and the choristers were delighted to meet the composer himself at the first rehearsal.

It was a once in a lifetime experience for most of the choir.

The choir also chalked up a second performance at a significant New York church, the Church of the Transfiguration, also known as “the little church around the corner” in the East Village area.

Between rehearsals and performances choir members managed to take in Broadway shows, performances by the Metropolitan Opera and the Harlem Gospel Choir, jazz and karaoke and became regulars at a piano bar popular with Broadway stars.

Phoenix enjoys latest exhibition Phoenix Macedon Ranges Art and Craft Group thanks the community for its support at the December exhibition.

Congratulations to raffle winners Bryan Power and Pam Mountjoy who won handmade goods from each of the artists. Several members demonstrated their art form including Ruth McLaine handspinning wool.

The group has moved its usual June exhibition forward to March in 2017.

Works including pottery, paintings, glass art, jewellery, woodcraft and textile art will be available for purchase at the old Gisborne Court House.

Opening night will be Friday March 10 at 7.30pm, and then open 10am to 4pm on March 11, 12 and 13. Entry is free.

Mount Players to start the year with a little gem The first production for this year is already well into rehearsals and offers something a little different. Little Gem by Elaine Murphy, directed

by Richard Keown, is a beautifully written Irish play about a year in the life of one family. Three generations of women tell their individual and collective stories by way of entwined monologues.

These women are real, flawed, vulnerable but lovable characters with multi-dimensionality, complexity and humanity.

Their stories are delivered with

passion and typical Irish humour.

The season runs from February 24 to March 11.

Auditions for the second production, True West by Sam Shepherd, directed by Travis Handcock, will be held at The Mountview Theatre on February 27 and 28 at 7pm.

Find out how to get best images from weather events Macedon Ranges Photographic Society What a fabulous year ahead with a great range of competition topics, training nights, outings and a host of other activities planned for our club members. Check out our revamped website for the calendar of events and loads of other information.

The year kicks off at the general meeting on February 7 with an in-house competition topic ‘Wildlife’ and ‘Open’.

The presented images are reviewed by the club members and suggestions made for how to improve them if needed.

We will also have a couple of mini tutorials to help club members with their photography: ‘Getting the best focus’ and ‘Image Resizing’.

On the following Monday, February 13, the Malmsburybased photographer Adam Brentnall will be presenting at our technical night. He will be demonstrating how to get the best images from weather events – storms, lightning, rain and other things nature tends to throw at us. This will help club members with their June competition entries.

Alan and Glennis Speed celebrated their (combined) 160th birthday at Baringo Food and Wine with family and friends on January 22. Alan turned 80 in December and Glennis in January.

As well, the Uniting Church had a surprise birthday cake for Glennis at the January Muffin'n More day.

A fault in a Telstra cable in Brooking Road put many South Gisborne land line phones out of action over the Christmas-New Year period.

A new cafe called 'Mr' is opening up in The Village shopping centre in Gisborne. The Mr cafe in Macedon has proved popular.

For many years John and Magda Hike, who live on the corner of Worcester and Howey Streets, have created magnificent Christmas scenes in the front rooms of their house. MP supports call for land gift to cemetery During the parliamentary sittings late last year, Northern Victoria MP Wendy Lovell called on the State Government to support the Gisborne Cemetery Trust’s request to secure the State Governmentowned land adjoining the cemetery.

Wendy Ms Lovell said the Cemetery Trust Lovell MP had identified that within 20 years the cemetery would require more land to enable it to continue to service the needs of the local community.

However, if adjoining land could be used for the cemetery, the expanded site would be suitable for at least a further 75 years.

“The Trust is not in a position to purchase the land identified but is instead requesting that the Government gift the land to the Trust.”

Ms Lovell said the land had been identified as surplus to the State Government’s requirements, and was itself originally gifted to the Government by community members in the early 1900s.

Bronwyn Tacey is rewarded for many years of community service. The award was presented by bank director Paul Crothers.

Bronwyn Tacey named as Local Hero for 2016 Gisborne resident Bronwyn Tacey was named the 2016 Local Hero at the Gisborne Community Carols in December in recognition of her extensive service to our community over many years. The award recognises longevity, commitment and outstanding volunteer work in the community and is sponsored by Gisborne & District Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank.

Bronwyn has served on more than 15 local committees including Gisborne Secondary College Chaplaincy, Gisborne Maternal and Child Health Support Group, Gisborne Little Athletics, Dixon Field Committee of Management, Possums Netball and Gisborne Netball Association, Gisborne Basketball, New Gisborne Playgroup, Swinburne Avenue Kinder, New Gisborne Primary School Council, Gisborne Tennis Club and Gisborne Gymnastics Club.

Her nomination highlighted Bronwyn’s 14 years of dedication to Gisborne Secondary College as a key member of the school’s Chaplaincy Committee. This small committee works to raise over $50,000 every year to help fund the school chaplain, currently Barb Davis, who supports the emotional wellbeing of students by providing pastoral care services and strategies. Although her own children did not go to Gisborne Secondary College, Bronwyn continues her service there because she believes in the value of the chaplaincy program.

Bank director Paul Crothers presented Brownyn with her award and said the local Community Bank was honoured to help recognise someone who has contributed so much to our community.

News from Macedon tree works to begin A large Pin Oak in Macedon’s Avenue of Honour is in an advanced state of decline with extensive decay at its base, and will be removed due to public safety concerns.

Council will plant an equivalent species tree in late autumn, in keeping with the autumn colours of the area.

Facilitators needed for new parents healthy relationships program Want to be part of a new innovative program for firsttime parents, which will help them build and maintain healthy relationships?

Baby Makes 3 will run in Gisborne and Lancefield from March to September, and seeks to promote equal and respectful relationships between men and women to ensure healthy, long-lasting relationships following the transition to parenthood.

Baby Makes 3 is built around three evening sessions led by trained male and female facilitators and will cover topics related to the transition to parenthood including: expectations of mothers and fathers who does what at home healthy relationships meaningful equality, sex and intimacy dealing with conflict effective communication.

Successful applicants will take part in a comprehensive two-day training course on Monday February 20 and Tuesday February 21, and applicants must be available for these training dates.

To be suited to the role you should have experience in group facilitation and a good understanding of gender equality.

Helping young parents find their ‘village’ The Young Parent Connection project helps parents aged 25 and under to connect with their peers and access services and activities in their local community.

To help build these connections and reduce the isolation that can be a challenge for young parents, a private online Facebook community has also been created for participants in the project.

Since the project began in September, 23 parents have joined the online community and 12 free activities have been organised across the shire, including Mums, Bubs and Toddler yoga, walks, coffee catch-ups, swimming lessons, and attendance at the Kyneton Community Lunch and Parent-Child Mother Goose program.

A Spanish inspired recipe.

Serves 4 – 6.

For 2 people, halve ingredients.

What you will need: ¼ teaspoon (good pinch) saffron threads with 1 tablespoon boiling water in heatproof jug (Or 1 tsp tumeric) 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 chicken thigh fillets, trimmed of fat, cubed 2 chorizo sausages (fresh if possible), thickly sliced 1 large brown onion, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 teaspoons sweet paprika 4 medium tomatoes, chopped 1 red capsicum, finely diced 1½ cups Calasparra rice, a medium grain or Aborio risotto rice 4 cups chicken stock (homemade, packaged or stock cubes) 12 large green prawns, peeled (tails intact), deveined

12 mussels, washed and debearded (optional) 1 cup frozen peas Chopped parsley and lemon wedges, to serve Heat oil in a large deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Add chicken. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes until browned. Transfer to a bowl.

Add chorizo, onion and garlic to pan. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until onion has softened. Add saffron liquid and paprika. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute or until fragrant. Add tomatoes and capsicum. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until tomatoes are softened.

Add rice. Stir to coat. Add stock. Bring to the boil.

Reduce heat to medium. Return chicken to pan.

Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes or until stock has absorbed.

Top rice with prawns, mussels and peas. Cook, covered with lid or double layer of foil, for 10 minutes or until rice is tender, prawns are cooked and mussels opened.

Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve with lemon wedges.

I’ve just added petunias, lobelias and alyssum to some of my hanging baskets to boost the colours. Regular liquid feeding is also needed for a good show.

This is a good time for sowing seeds of aquilegia, carnation, cyclamen, hollyhock, lupin, pansy, polyanthes, stock and some of our native seeds.

Trim off the deadheads regularly from your roses then give them a deep soak and a light feed which should keep them flowering for months.

February is the time for a light all-over prune for any extra tall, lanky shoots on roses. You can trim these shoots by one to two-thirds to shape your rose plants.

Regular tip pruning and trimming of native plants will tighten up their grown and give the plants a better overall shape. Some natives even make good topiary plants if you choose the right varieties and prune them regularly.

I have big crops of apples and crab apples this year - all the local parrots and cockatoos attest to that. Keep any fruit trees and fruiting plants well netted to keep these large pests away. The growth on most of the fruiting plants has been exuberant to say the least.

Thinning out some of the developing fruits and propping up hanging branches may be necessary, to prevent the branches snapping with the weight of the fruit. Remember strong growth from our good rainfall means plants will need

In the family garden On a hot day be up early to pick flowers and leaves from the garden to place into a flower press. Make a simple one from a pile of hardback old books or magazines.

Position the flowers and leaves in between the pages so they flatten and dry out. Local Op shops will have some books you could collect to use for this if you do not have any spare. After a month or two you should have well pressed specimens to use for decorating.

Daly Nature Reserve News After a break over the festive season, members are back to working bees which are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Sign-in is at 9.30am and we always welcome newcomers. Perhaps you have downsized and miss your garden. A walk around Daly Nature Reserve could be very invigorating. We enjoy a cuppa and chat about 11am.

Behind the scenes we have been meeting the Shire’s environment and parks and gardens personnel about future management of the reserve.

Following funding from the Federal Government via Rob Mitchell MP, we walked round with the arborist who will be carrying out the pine removal and trimming in the reserve. This will encourage better growing conditions for indigenous species. New tube stock from a list of naturally occurring plants will be added.

We are pleased to see natural revegetation is already taking place since the mowing regime has been adjusted and native grasses such as poa and kangaroo grass are re-appearing.

Gisborne Garden Club Gisborne Garden Club capped off a very enjoyable and successful 2016 with an equally enjoyable and successful Christmas Lunch. Held on December 14 at the Gisborne Masonic Hall, the final activity for the year saw more than 70 members gather in a friendly, relaxed environment to share a beautifully catered roast meal, followed by irresistible desserts.

At least half the guests left with one of the many door prizes on offer - mostly plants, but also books and garden paraphernalia - and one person from each table went home with the Christmas table centre. A great day all round!

The program for this year was distributed at the lunch, and this year’s planned events again offer a variety of interest for all. The first meeting for the year is on February 8 in Gisborne.

Wyralla plans on Facebook You can see the first draft plans for the Wyralla Reserve at the Friends of Wyralla Reserve Facebook page. We hope that this year will see the implementation of this plan as a master plan for a staged development of the Wyralla Reserve. A lot of work needs to be done though.

In the next few months discussions will resume with the Macedon Ranges Shire Council. Meetings with Council officers in the past have been encouraging. Friends of Wyralla Reserve now need to ‘sell’ the draft plan to the council. It appears the new South Ward councillors will be supportive.

The Upper Deep Creek Landcare Network, along with Macedon Ranges Shire and Jackson Creek EcoNetwork, are seeking interested landholders from the greater Gisborne area to start a new Gisborne Landcare group.

Currently there is no Landcare group that covers this Gisborne area. Gisborne once had a Landcare Group, but it folded in 2003.

Interested local landholders are invited to attend a public meeting on Thursday March 9 on the formation of a new Landcare group for the Gisborne area. The meeting will be held from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at Macedon Ranges Shire offices, 40 Robertson Street, Gisborne.

The public meeting will enable interested landholders to find out more about Landcare, what starting a new group will involve and what it could do. The activities of a new group, if it is established, will be determined by its members and reflect issues of interest/ concern to the local community.

2017 is here and the New Year begins with a plethora of advertisements and articles and inspirational quotes about starting afresh and setting goals. Whether it be for business or personal reasons, it’s a great time to make short and long-term plans; yes, however, these can be supported by and more likely achieved by a few additional considerations.

After my most challenging year to date in 2016, my focus over the Christmas break was to entirely switch off from the daily chores and work requirements. Whilst it took a while, the outcome was far better than I expected.

I was able to spend quality time with those around me. I was able to identify what poor habits were dominating my life. I realised that I assigned too little time for myself throughout the year and lost focus by being too busy. I realised that I was in control of making choices and retrained myself to say ‘No’ or think before saying ‘Yes’. Importantly, my motivation came back with a focus on moving forward rather than working hard on just getting jobs done.

So, as you make plans and set goals for the year, consider more than a task list. Here are some quick tips for you: 1. Be honest and realistic in reviewing what has worked or not worked in the past and why.

2. Make appointments with yourself to keep your mind and body healthy. Read, relax, reorganise and review. Regularly.

3. Find what motivates you. It may be an outcome of point 2 but dig deep to learn what is blocking you or questioning your energy. Focus on what makes you feel right and identify what makes you tick.

4. Get others on board. Solo or not, surround yourself with people who share or support your vision and other like-minded people.

5. Be accountable. You know what you want to achieve and, hopefully, by when. However, who are you answering to? What are the measures in place to hold you responsible and what are the rewards?

My Best

Books of 2016

2016 presented some diverse reading for me. I was incredibly moved by Deng Thiak Adut’s inspiring memoir as a Sudanese refugee now Aussie lawyer in Songs of a War Boy. I also loved the detail and impact on one family behind the Eastern side of the Berlin Wall in Nina Wallander’s memoir Forty Autumns.

It was Aussie Jane Harper’s debut country town mystery The Dry that was my number 1 read of the year for its evocative descriptions and great characters and dialogue. My tip for nominations this year is The Good People by Hannah Kent, a brilliant story in 1825 Ireland with wonderful descriptions of place, grief and superstition. I really enjoyed The Last Painting of Sara DeVos by Dominic Smith with its clever interweaving of art, role of women and tangled relationships over three time periods.

Chris Cleave is one of my all time favourite authors and his novel Everyone Brave is Forgiven had a surprising perspective on the wealthy and forgotten disabled and coloured children in WWII. And a book that made me laugh, cry, scream and almost

BOOK WORMS with Natasha Boyd throw up was the very visceral novel A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, which spans 40+ years and the friendship between four male friends.

My favourite reading via audiobook was The Light Between the Oceans by ML Stedman as read

by Noah Taylor. It’s a wonderfully moving story set in post-WWI Western Australia, and chronicles the difficulties for all involved in the choice to keep a child washed up on the shore of a lighthouse island.

Lots of fantastic kids’ and teen reads last year but my top pick went to Anna and the Swallow Man by Gavriel Savit. Set in Krakow, Poland, 1939 (a place I

stayed for two weeks in 2000) it is perfect for 10+ fans of Morris Gleitzman’s Once series and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

The overall No 1 selling book for Australia was Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the playscript by JK Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany (426,000 copies sold). Other top 10 selling kids’ favourites included 78-Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton (315,000), Double Down: Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney (161,000) and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film script by JK Rowling (124,000).

Top 10 adult books all clocking over 99,000 copies included The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, Working Class Boy by Jimmy Barnes, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty, The Four Legendary Kingdoms by Matthew Reilly and Night School by Lee Child.

2017 promises more delights so I look forward to keeping you informed throughout the year.

Crowds flock to Gisborne Festival The Gisborne Christmas Festival held on Friday December 9 had a real family atmosphere with large crowds watching the street parade and participating in the activities at Gardiner Reserve, including enjoying the carnival rides, live music, the variety of stalls and the fireworks.

The winner of the popular Monster Christmas Wheelbarrow Raffle which was drawn on the night was Dav Quarrell of Kyneton.

Prizes were awarded to those judged to be the best participants in the parade. First prize was awarded to Our Village Family Day Care, second prize to St Brigid’s Primary and third prize to Willowbank Early Learning Centre.

It was the first year that the festival has been coordinated by the Gisborne and District Lions Club, with the assistance of Glenys Quaife and Bob Benzie. The Lions Club is extremely appreciative of the local businesses that supported the festival through either being major or minor sponsors.

While there has been a positive reaction to the event and the exposure provided to businesses that supported the festival, the Lions Club is seeking feedback to enhance the event in future years. Top lineup set for March music festival Saturday March 4 will see two stages of live music, local food and drink stalls and hundreds of festival-goers flock to the Gisborne Steam Park to take part in the Macedon Ranges Music Festival. The loaded lineup features a list of big names including Stonefield, Lloyd Spiegel, The Heartache State, Matt Borg Trio and David Spry as well as local talents Walkers Road, Blue Howl, Scott Boyd and Jared Brentnall named on the bill. All performers incredibly donate their performances to help raise money for the Cambodian Kids Foundation.

While these acts take to the main stage, a long list of local performers will be taking to the youth stage to battle it out for the chance to open the 2018 Festival!

Festival side shows are also taking place throughout February in music venues across the Ranges. Catch the Acoustic/Roots night at Big Little Baby Macedon on March 10, get your dancing shoes on with Soul and Rock at the Vic Hotel Woodend on March 18 and get grooving to the Blues at Baringo on March 24. These side shows are all about celebrating our brilliant performers and venues, and just having a good time.

PASS WITH CARE I was lucky enough to spend some time in Port Fairy over the holidays. On the wide flat streets, many people ride or walk everywhere. It was holiday time for most people and the mood was relaxed.

As a result, all road users just learnt to get along safely and it worked!

Bike Safe Macedon Ranges has just launched our “Pass with Care” campaign aimed at encouraging all road users to be careful when overtaking other vehicles.

It’s simply about leaving plenty of room and time to pass safely. It’s particularly relevant to new users of our country roads which present different challenges to the urban environment. Who knows what is around that corner? All it takes is a little impatience or lack of concentration and someone’s dad or mum, brother or sister, son or daughter could end up in hospital or worse. Nobody wants that kind of outcome.

We have placed billboards and posters across the Ranges to remind people of this simple message.

Maybe in 2017, can we all think about taking a little more time and care out on our roads? A few seconds just isn’t worth the risk.

This month local woman Kate Darby will play in her first game for Carlton in the AFL Women’s League. Kate grew up in the Macedon area, attending Holy Cross Primary School then Sacred Heart College, Kyneton.

With an allround sporting background, Kate (right) started playing backyard football from 12, and later for her school. At 14 she was assisting her tennis coach giving lessons. By 18 she had her own tennis coaching business. Kate also played cricket and basketball along the way; however football is the game she has always been most passionate about.

The opportunity to play came last year. Kate was invited to attend a training session at Princes Park with the Carlton team. Present at the session were Carlton selectors, including coach Damien Keeping.

A long eight weeks later, Kate was picked by Carlton in the AFL draft.

Kate’s commitment to the club involves nine contact hours a week. Most training sessions focus on running and skills training and three nights a week will be spent in Melbourne. On top of this, in her own time, is a commitment to personal fitness training. Training with the team started back in November.

As a kid, Kate was a massive Bulldogs fan (still is), and looked up to many of the AFL players as sporting heroes. Her message to kids now is “Stick with your passions and do what makes you happy.” This opportunity came along unexpectedly and she is going to give it all she’s got. Riddells Creek flour mill

onstruction of the Riddell’s Creek Flour Mill began in 1866, four years after the Melbourne to Bendigo Railway had begun operations through the village recently named Riddells Creek. Following the gold rush of the 1850s the confidence of the Colony of Victoria was buoyant; the period was one of growth.

The Age of 25 April 1866 reported: “Some capitalists are about to erect a large mill near the plentifully watered Riddells Creek, the contemplated cost of which is between £8,000 and £10,000. The same gentlemen are about to erect a woollen factory, the splendid water supply being the inducement for its erection at that location.”

The James McKenzie Milling Company built the mill.

Water pressure to drive the turbine was provided by damming the creek about two kilometres upstream of the mill site and diverting a stream by way of a headrace to the mill. By this means the water of the creek was elevated about ten metres above the mill.

The Leader newspaper of 18 May 1867 described the water-race for the flour mill as having been cut along the face of a steeply sloping bank. Smith’s nursery downstream of the mill had a small water-hole created within the tail-race and from this, furrows were dug in whatever direction was needed for irrigation of stock at critical times.

When the mill was first established, demand for water from the creek was modest. However, in 1891, Gisborne’s water supply was taken from Barringo Creek, one of the main feeders of Riddells Creek. In 1906 a second pipeline diverted additional water from the stream to Sunbury, thus reducing the water flow available to the mill.

When an 1860s bluestone flour mill at Riddells Creek was demolished in 1924, it gave new life to Bundaleer homestead on Melton Road at Gisborne. The original house on the property (built in the 1880s) was extended in 1925 by the Maslin family using the mill bluestone.

This is the story of the old flour mill.

Business prospered for some time but then suffered a downturn following severe drought, culminating with a mill fire. The Bacchus Marsh Express reported the destruction by fire of the 'Vortex Flour Mill' on 6 February 1874: “The glare of the fire was first observed and the alarm given at half-past two. The men residing on the premises, aroused by the inhabitants of the neighbouring township, who flocked to the scene, did all that could be done to stay the ravages of the fire but, in little more

The mill then passed to George Miller, a relative of McKenzie’s. At this time there was no railway to Romsey and Lancefield, so from 20 to 30 wagon teams were to be seen daily carting grain from these

than an hour, the building, which is of bluestone, was completely gutted. There were about 400 bags of wheat in the building, none of which was saved.”

This was followed by an item noting that “The unexpected calling together of the creditors of Mr Miller, whose Mill at Riddells Creek was lately burnt, will be attended with considerable hardship upon the farmers who had wheat burnt. Mr David Junor of “Burnside” stands to lose upwards of £200”.

The Argus of 23 April 1874 listed a Mortgagee’s Auction of the estate of George Miller, describing the mill as follows: “Bluestone Mill of 3 storeys (partially injured by fire), possessing peculiar and exceptional advantages of a magnificent waterfall of 30 feet, with a Thomson Patent Vortex Turbine of 20 horsepower with the necessary piping and gear, capable of being worked at all seasons of the year at full power by the waterfall alluded to. In addition there is an auxiliary horizontal steam engine, of 8 inch cylinder, 24 inch stroke, known as the ‘Allen’...

“Detached from the mill stand a brick store, stabling and workshops, also manager’s residence with attractive garden plentifully stocked with fruit trees and flowers.

The whole standing on 3 acres of land.”

Histories written in the 1980s about the mill state that the mill was powered by a waterwheel. However, Walter Smith’s history of the 1930s correctly stated that the mill was powered by a water turbine, confirmed by the above newspaper item.

In 1876 William Corrie of Melbourne took ownership of the mill and worked to rebuild the facility as a flock mill. Old rags were processed by the mill to be used as stuffing for pillows, mattresses and furniture.

Walter Smith’s history reported that the mill residence had been greatly enlarged with an upper level containing five bedrooms to accommodate the many employees who worked in the flock mill. These employees were of many nationalities, some having tertiary education. continued next page

He also wrote that Corrie installed a dynamo in the mill, driven by an auxiliary shaft from the Allen Turbine. The dynamo provided electric lighting to the mill residence, making it one of the first private residences in Victoria with electric lighting.

The Gisborne Shire rate records indicate that William Corrie paid rates on the Flock Mill from 1876 until 1881.

In 1882 Romsey Shire was formed and Riddells Creek became part of that shire, so unfortunately there are no further records available. In 1882, Corrie moved his flock milling business to Melbourne.

dvertisements in The Argus, 23 October 1886 announced the sale by public auction at “Riddells Creek – Large Family Residence and 8 acres of land – Flock Mill and 3 acres” and 83 acres of adjoining land.

The notice stated that William Corrie was departing for Europe. In this auction notice is a description of the property and the renovations that Corrie made to the residence and mill after the 1874 fire; notably, the mill is now reduced to two storeys: "...The land has an area of eight acres fronting the main Gisborne road and adjoining the well-known nursery of Messrs. Thomas Smith and Sons. Also adjoining, substantial two-storey Bluestone Mill with land having an area of three acres.

The Mill is worked by a permanent water race with rights reserved, and is fitted with turbine machinery.

Tanks containing 2400 gallons... The House and Mill are lighted throughout by electricity.”

The properties were again advertised for auction in 1889. The mill residence now has a first floor with five bedrooms: “Land situate at Riddell’s Creek, comprising 8 acres, on which is erected a Substantial Family Residence known as Falbarrow House. Well-built of stone, stuccoed, with verandah and balcony, containing on ground floor – Drawing Room, Dining Room, Breakfast Room, Sitting Room, 2 Bedrooms, large Bathroom, Kitchen with dresser and colonial oven, Laundry,

Scullery, Summer Room, etc. and on 1st floor – 5 Bedrooms, Lobby Room and on balcony a Smoking Room. The house is fitted throughout with electric incandescent light, connected with the motive power of a Mill on the creek at the foot of the garden...”

Walter Smith's history confirms that the mill residence was operated as a guesthouse named Falbarrow House which was still offering accommodation in March of 1891.

A financial depression in Victoria in the 1890s followed the collapse of a speculative land boom. A run on the major banks forced most to close their doors for a time in 1893 in what was Melbourne’s worst ever financial crisis. More than a third of Melbourne’s breadwinners were without employment.

In 1899, the mill was gutted by fire for a second time after which Otto Julius Mueller bought the mill and Falbarrow House. The mill was refitted for processing oats and flour and Falbarrow House, being in a bad state of repair and too big for the Mueller family, was renovated and the upper level was demolished.

The Sunbury News of April 1904 reported: “Mr Mueller, the proprietor of the local Flour Mill, is now very busy, and is running the Mill practically night and day. Consignments of grain are arriving from so far distant as Nathalia, north of Shepparton. Mr Mueller, who has spent a mint of money in bringing his plant up to date, deserves the success which is now coming to him”. Mueller operated the mill until 1918 and it was sold in 1919.

iddells Creek Flour Mill and Falbarrow House fell into to disrepair and became a rendezvous point for the many swaggies who wandered through the countryside seeking employment.

The last owner, Catherine Maslin, demolished the mill and used the bluestone in 1924 for renovations at “Prez”, the home she and her husband had bought the year before on Melton Road in Gisborne. They renamed this property “Bundaleer Homestead”.

It is a truly beautiful yarn.” “Yes it certainly is,” said the customer, “and you tell it well too.”

Every year this farmer complained about the weather and the crops. It was too wet, or too dry, or too many weeds, or too many grasshoppers, or there was no market, or something. Never anything good. Then came a year when the crops were good. Prices soared and bank accounts bulged. “Pretty good year, you’ll have to admit,” a neighbour said. “Middling,” the farmer conceded.

“But terribly hard on the soil.”

As the young farmer and his city-bred girl friend were walking through the fields, they passed a cow and her calf affectionately rubbing noses. “Ah,” said the young man, “that makes me want to do the same.” “Well why don’t you?” asked the girl. “It’s your cow isn’t it?”

Such was the humour 38 years ago.

‘Betty’s Boop’ with Betty Doolan Lynn and Lisa of the Life Enhancement Program (LEP) took a bus trip with residents to Kilmore recently where we had lunch at the Rose Café.

There was a lovely rose garden that customers could walk around. After lunch we went to Myriad Glass where we saw a demonstration on joining glass and making patterns and we could purchase any of the beautiful jewellery etc. We were invited to a very nice afternoon tea; thank you ladies for a beaut day.

The Residents’ Christmas Party: so many family, friends and children turned up, I hope everyone appreciated the terrific job LEP did with the catering and the organised entertainment. Many, many thanks to all the helpers – they did a great job.

My daughter Judith came down from Queensland and we went to Mass on Christmas morning then walked to Gary’s place. Now it is a well known fact that turn me around in my back yard and I am lost – we left church and got lost in the bush.

No footpaths, and after walking for quite a long way we finished opposite the high school and while I am thinking ‘how I am going to get across the road’, I couldn’t believe it but Judith walked into the middle of the road, put her hands up each way and stopped the traffic then said “Come on Mum, it’s safe now.”

I l felt like I was at school again. We were still lost and decided to go back and start again. Judith was off again into the middle of the road with the hand signals (must be something they do in Queensland).

The last time I saw this action was a policeman on the corner of Swanston and Bourke Streets stopping the traffic.

On New Year’s Eve I would sit on the front steps at midnight, the boats in the harbour would toot their horns, bells would ring and the neighbours would sing. I hope you all have a wonderful memory of a New Year's past – if you don’t, then make one up.

understanding what is not explicitly stated and learn more about ambiguous meanings of language 

practise talking to people and sharing news with friends.

Sessions will be for boys and girls 5-7 years weekly, and fortnightly classes for girls 6-8 yeas and 9-12 years.

Thunderstorms and asthma

Most people are familiar with seasonal hay fever, which is most commonly due to grass pollens. This pollen is relatively large and the grains are caught in people’s upper airways resulting in a runny nose, itchy throat, watery eyes and sneezing. These pollen grains are generally too large to travel into the lower parts of the lungs.

Thunderstorm asthma is mostly triggered by an uncommon type of thunderstorm that causes grass pollen grains to be swept up into the clouds as the storm forms. When they absorb moisture, they burst open and release large amounts of smaller allergen particles. One pollen grain can release up to 700 of these smaller particles. These are then blown down to ground level, creating an outflow wind full of potential asthma triggers.

These particles are so small that they can be breathed deeply into the lungs. In some people this will cause the lungs to become irritated. Irritation can cause swelling, narrowing and extra mucus production in the small airways in the lung. This makes it difficult to breathe and can result in asthma symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness and coughing. These asthma symptoms may become severe very quickly.

Those at increased risk of thunderstorm asthma include people with a history of asthma, people with undiagnosed asthma (see below) and people with hay fever (particularly seasonal hay fever) or allergy to grass pollen.

Could I have undiagnosed asthma?

The most common symptoms are:  Wheezing, shortness of breath or coughing  a feeling of tightness in the chest.

A diagnosis of asthma is more likely if your symptoms:  keep coming back, or happen at the same time each year  are worse at night or in the early morning  are clearly triggered by exercise, allergies or infections  improve quickly with reliever medication.

Different people can have different triggers of their asthma. These can include viral respiratory infections (like a cold); indoor and outdoor air pollution (such as cigarette smoke or smoke from fires); allergies (house dust mite, moulds, pollens, pets); and exercise.

If you suspect you might have asthma, it is important to see your doctor for a professional diagnosis.

Macedon Ranges Health welcomes Leanne Paonne (Clinical Psychologist) and Ganesh Kuppa (Physiotherapist) to our team in 2017.

Leanne works with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, social phobia, life transition and adjustment issues, health-related problems, relaxation and stress management and confidence and self-esteem.

She works with adults and adolescents by negotiation and is available Monday to Friday. She accepts both GP referrals and private referrals.

Leanne joins our mental health services team which now includes Nicole Price (Paediatric Psychologist), Tanya Borg (Psychologist), Veronica Sinclair (Counselling) and Rhea Doyle (Social Worker). We have also increased hours

for other members of our team to accommodate the demand for these services.

Ganesh Kuppa has joined our Physiotherapy team and has a keen interest in neurological rehabilitation, musculoskeletal and sports injuries, including treating stroke, Parkinson’s and other neurological conditions.

Change ahead for carers in Macedon Ranges This year promises to be one of significant change for carers of loved ones with a mental illness. The introduction of the NDIS in May this year will see the biggest change in disability service delivery for three decades.

"The NDIS is due to impact the Macedon Ranges in May this year," said Mike Hamer, vice-president of PS My Family Matters. "Like all change, it will take some time to get used to. There have been mixed reports of the program from the various trial areas, especially in relation to the acceptance rates for those suffering from psychosocial disability, as it is now known."

PS My Family Matters is committed to supporting carers and families as they deal with service providers and register for assistance. "This is a time when many carers will be accessing a lot of new information. We’re here to help carers as they manage their day to day

issues and engage with the NDIS," said Mike. "It’s a new space for all of us, but we’ll do what we can to support Macedon Ranges’ carers as best as we’re able."

Western Water is urging Gisborne residents to be aware of permanent water saving rules when using water this summer.

Permanent water saving rules are sensible guidelines that make sure we take care with our drinking water.

Being aware of the rules will help households keep their water use to 155 litres or less per person per day, which is the aim of the State Government’s Target 155 campaign.

Under the rules you can  Water your garden or lawn with a watering can, bucket or hand-held hose with a trigger nozzle at any time  Water your garden or lawn with a watering system such as a sprinkler only between 6pm and 10am  Wash your car with a bucket, hand-held hose with a trigger nozzle or high-pressure cleaning device at any time  Use water for a fountain or water feature only if it recirculates water.

Things that can help you achieve Target 155 include shorter showers, only washing clothes when you have a full load, and mulching your garden to keep water in the soil.

Rovers attend nationwide event

A dunking during the adventure was all part of the fun.

1st Gisborne Venturers on Glenelg River canoe hike Six Venturers and four leaders headed off on December 11 for a five-day canoe hike down the Glenelg River.

After a 4½-hour drive we arrived at Moleside Landing.

We began our trip with a few hours' paddling in the afternoon: we spotted two koalas and a couple of us were lucky enough to spot an elusive platypus. We arrived at our first camp site with plenty of light to set up camp and get comfortable for the night.

During dinner we were joined by a family of very confident kookaburras, and as the stars emerged we were under attack…the possums had arrived! Climbing on the tables and the stoves, banging and crashing around the camp and even making an attempt at opening an Eski.

Over the next four days we paddled 50km to our destination in Nelson at the river mouth, along the way spotting more of Australia’s finest – kangaroos, wallabies and emus. We swam, had a mud fight, laughed, played cards, visited the Princess Margaret Rose Caves, had one capsize (and one rescue), played land and canoe Frisbee, paddled into South Australia and back to Victoria, told stories and overall had a great adventure in a truly beautiful part of Victoria with a fantastic group of Venturers.

In December-January, a small group of Rover Scouts from the Macedon Ranges attended the 20th Australian Rover Moot at Mafeking Rover Park in Caveat, about two hours north of Melbourne. The event was held for 11 days.

The opening ceremony was held at Treasury Gardens on December 27, where we welcomed Rover Scouts from all Australian states and territories as well as Rover Scouts from Europe, New Zealand and Canada. All Scouts then headed off to their chosen five-day expeditions, which included mountain biking, houseboating, surfing, hiking and even a winery tour.

On New Year’s Eve, the expeditions finished and we all travelled to Mafeking for the rest of the Moot.

New Year’s Day was a free day. Some of us travelled into Seymour to wash all our laundry, as well as to do some shopping. Others stayed onsite and enjoyed some of the many onsite activities on offer, including a fraternity tent, golf course and cinema.

The next day was the first day of offsite activities.

These would run for four days, with us Scouts going to a different activity each day. There was a broad range of activities on offer including skydiving, Puffing Billy and an MCG tour. We were also required to undertake at least half a day of community service.

January 6 was Open Day, where members of the public were allowed to come and experience a Moot.

Genealogical Group on the go

Guides are into rappelling

Well, it’s February which means our volunteers are back on duty on Thursday afternoons (2pm-5pm) in the Family History Room adjoining the Gisborne Our monthly meetings Library.

Gisborne Girl Guides finished off Term 4 with a variety of activities including a picnic in the Park and a rappelling session.

Rappelling is climbing up a structure using ropes and requires a lot of physical strength to pull yourself up so it was quite a challenge. A very big thankyou to Michael and Morgan from Gisborne Scouts who facilitated the session.

They taught us how to wear a harness and how to pull on the various ropes to lift ourselves up. The girls found this a bit scary at first but once they learnt how to control the ropes and were able to climb up the wall, the anxiety abated and the girls had fun.

During the holidays Erin and Tahlia joined some girls from Bacchus Marsh to take a journey into Fitzroy by train to view the street murals.

Girl Guides resumes for this year on Thursday February 9. Vacancies exist in the Unit for girls 8 years of age or older. Come and give it a try. Phone Deb on 5426 1931 for further details.

Residents asked not to be complacent about fire Fire prevention inspections on properties across the shire are nearing completion, with more than 600 Fire Prevention Notices issued to property owners. Compliance with these notices is above 90 per cent.

Council’s roadside slashing program is also almost complete, with nearly 1,000km of Council roadsides slashed. Council will monitor regrowth on roadsides and if appropriate will complete a second cut in highrisk areas.

Council’s Fire Management Officer will continue to issue Fire Prevention Notices to properties where needed and, if the notice is not complied with, Council will be forced to complete the work required and the property owner will be charged with associated costs, in addition to a $1,554 fine.

Preventing fires is everyone’s responsibility and a well-maintained property will help to reduce the risk of fire to you and your neighbours.

Kindness and compassion are two qualities that come naturally for Cherry Servis, one of the founding members of the Woodend Lifestyle Carers’ Support Group.

Established in 2012, the group caters for the needs of people caring for somebody experiencing dementia, and is open to all carers within the Macedon Ranges Shire. Under Cherry’s guidance, the group has identified a need for a purpose-built respite guest house for carers of loved ones suffering from dementia, Alzheimers and acquired brain injuries, and is currently fundraising towards this long-term goal.

Cherry is also a hard working member of the Mount Players Theatre Group and a volunteer at the Opportunity on Hamilton op shop.

Whether she’s encouraging others in her hometown of Bullengarook to try something new, or out there herself with one of the many groups that she’s involved in, social connectedness underpins all that Juli Robinson is.

A member of her local playgroup, choir, Landcare, CFA, progressive dinner group and harvest exchange, and past member of the Grant Avenue Kindergarten and Gisborne Soccer Club, Juli’s great gift to others is her infectious enthusiasm for community and the land.

For Juli, life is meaningful when she’s not just making herself and own family happy, but giving something back.

Gisborne students recognised with scholarships Two Gisborne students have been awarded scholarships to Sacred Heart College Kyneton this year.

Sacred Heart gives scholarships to Grade 6 students from each of the six Catholic Primary Schools in the Macedon Ranges. The recipients from the Gisborne area are Rachel Cassar from St Brigid’s and Lilli Collins from Holy Cross.

Both students have been noted to be great role models within their school communities and have also shown resilience and determination in their academic efforts.

These scholarships represent a total value of $3000 per recipient throughout their secondary years at Sacred Heart College.

One of the highlights of Christmas was the Charity Bake Sale, organised over term 4 by a dedicated group of students and integration aides.

The evening, hosted by College Captains Eshe Lane and Sean Doherty, was a great opportunity to say how proud we are of students who work hard, persevere and achieve fabulous results for their effort. The evening featured top students in a variety of fields and showed lots of evidence that teaching and learning are certainly appreciated and the future of our local community will be enhanced by students growing into both leadership roles and community participation.

On January 18 over 90% of our students who applied through VTAC received a Round 1 offer of further study.

With Round 2 offers being released on February 7, we would like to extend our gratitude to our university and TAFE partners, who consistently support our students and their families throughout their time at the College, to make these important decisions regarding further study.

Through my involvement with the Macedon Ranges and Sunbury Careers Network I hope to pass on many more useful and practical resources through ‘Careers Chatter’ in 2017.

Macedon player in winning state futsal team Indra Thomas of Macedon was selected to compete in the Under 12 Victorian Country team at the National Futsal Championships in Sydney in January.

Indra’s eight team mates came from Bendigo, Geelong and Ballarat. The team went up with moderate expectations given they had only trained together a handful of times.

Going into day three they knew they had to win their two remaining group games to hold on to fourth spot. They delivered, winning 1-0 and 2-0 respectively. The semi-final against the top team, New South Wales City West, was Indra displays her an amazing game. Scores championship were locked at 2-2 at full time medal. and extra time which meant the tie would be decided on a best-of-three penalty shoot-out. Indra’s shot flew past the goalkeeper and wild celebrations followed when the girls won the shoot-out and knew they were into the grand final.

The grand final against Far North New South Wales Manning was close. The scores were locked at 2-2 at the break. After a spell of early pressure in the second half the Vic Country team scored to go 3-2 up. The girls then defended bravely and managed to hold the opposition out to win the grand final.

The celebrations finally ended at the local Krispy Kreme Doughnut shop. Way to go girls!

A flying review of 2016 Our first report for this year reflects on what a great year 2016 was for our club, its members and the community. Presentations at our General Meetings had us travelling all over the world with Rick Wallace and Peter Morse as well as instructional nights on how to fly fish in the salt and for our native ‘Yellas” and cod while our local rivers also got a look in. We watched fly fishing videos and discussed tactics and gear required to fool a fish.

Gisborne girls in state cricket titles The Central Highlands Female Squads selected for the season 2016-17 Cricket Victoria Female State Championships included several girls from Gisborne Cricket Club: (Under 18) Molly Sparke, Georgia Kerr and Bianca Mackay; (U16) Imogen Barlow and Georgia Paton; (U14) Bridget Barlow.

The girls acquitted themselves well, particularly Georgia Kerr, Under 18 co-captain, who was involved in an opening partnership that overtook the total set by the Outer East Eagles in the team’s final match. In the Under 14s, captain Bridget Barlow top scored with 27 against the Breakers.

Ian Mitchell gave up his time to show us how to get our flies in the exact spot on our smaller rivers with his expertise in Italian casting style.

John Waters again took us through the mechanics of casting properly and accurately. One can always pick something up from his lessons.

We were again privileged to be taught fly tying by Brian and Tony.

Our yearly sojourn in the salt water gave many members the excitement of catching their first saltwater fish.

Our open day at Woodend was a fantastic event with around 300 people coming through the

Buck Tail Fly – fly tying as art. doors. We promoted everything fly fishing, from guiding to tying, rod and reel builders as well as some great speakers.

Delayed competition draws big field of deprived players Mt Macedon Petanque Club held its fifth annual Triples Competition (postponed from October) on January 15. Being the first 2017 Competition for petanque players in Victoria, it attracted 105 players from as far away as the Grampians, St Andrews Beach and Smythsdale. The day saw light cloud followed by a bright sunny day, with a nice cooling breeze.

The Club set up its playing area consisting of 17 pistes 3m x 15m, and five games for the day, timed to one hour, and winners playing winners in the following round. A barbecue lunch was served, cooked by members of the Bundaleer Rovers crew to raise money for the group.

The Gisborne Community Bank again provided a marquee and, through their Community Investment Program grant, a time clock was bought and used for the first time.

The support of the Western Water water cart was also an essential part of the success of the day.

For a small sporting group the Mt Macedon Petanque Club members make an impressive impact in the general petanque community.

The club meets each Wednesday from 4.30pm during daylight savings, and every second and fourth Saturday from 10am.

Competition in full swing at Gisborne Thunder It has been a busy few months at Gisborne Thunder. While most of Gisborne was sleeping our squad swimmers were waking up at the crack of dawn to train for coming events.

Tyler Theodore and Darcy Smith represented the club at the 2016 Victorian Age Championships at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Both swimmers achieved personal best times and Darcy

reached the final of the 11/under girls 100m freestyle.

We have six swimmers who qualified and were set to represent the club at the Victorian Long Course (50m pool) Championships being held in Sale from January 27 to 29.

At our most recent club night held in January we awarded 20 swimmers encouragement awards.

Congratulations to you all on your consistent effort and enthusiasm.

Grace Avenell-Thompson and Lachlan Jones were the winners of our freestyle Dash 4 Cash on the night and took home $20 each.

Keep up your amazing efforts and determination.

Under 9 Possums Registration Day

Bowlers compete for Gazette shield The annual tournament for the GREAT Gisborne Gazette Shield was held at the Gisborne Bowling Club on Sunday November 27. Forty bowlers attended with 36 playing two games of ten ends 2 bowl mixed triples. A generous afternoon tea was enjoyed by all the bowlers and we thank Rhonda and her catering ladies.

The winners on the day were Paul O’Farrell, David Kelaart and David Hunton, while the runner-up team were Sam Boslem, Dorothy Evans and John Dale.

Best last game went to Ethan Higgins, Shane Newton and Domenic Varesse. The encouragement award went to Marion Pokrovsky, Eddy Gundy and Ian Ball.

Everyone attending had a most enjoyable day and we thank the Gisborne Gazette and GREAT (Gisborne Region Events Activities & Tourism) most sincerely for sponsoring the day.

Bushwalkers see old year out and new year in Our year ended with a walk along Mount Macedon Walking Trail followed by lunch at the Pitruzzello Olive Estate Restaurant. During the walk a festive morning tea was served, track-side as usual, by Shirley, Anne & Barbara, in bright costumes.

In February, member Keith will lead a walk along the Yarra to Herring Island followed by a dinner on the lawn at the free Myer Music Bowl concert. Then a walk at home on the Macedon Ranges, led by Pierre.

Later in the month, for a change, we will travel to Churchill National Park, east of Melbourne, where members Hendy and Gerard will show us the sights.

March starts well also, with members Brian & Heidi leading a walk around the three lakes at Daylesford and later in the month a day at Aireys Inlet will be organised by member Nigel.

Mallets at the ready for new season On our first day back this year Macedon Ranges Croquet Club members were very happy to have a few visitors drop in after lunch.

We welcomed Gerald Williams and Rene Morgan, both golf croquet players from Western Super Mare in the UK, along with relatives from Riddells Creek.

They had a couple of games with us and promised to call in once more before heading home. It was a great day all round as the courts were full and the weather kind.

We have had quite a few enquiries from potential members and held two introduction to croquet days during January. Thanks Ros for instigating these trials.

February looms as a very busy month for everyone. All club championship games will be held this month with the final being decided on Wednesday 22. It also happens to be our 25th birthday, so we will celebrate along with special

2016 5km Spring milestone celebration run.

Get yourself fit and healthy in 2017 Macedon Ranges Running Club (MRRC) is preparing for its Autumn Start Running Program starting in March. The aim of the program is to help those wishing to start running in a friendly social environment as part of a Start Running Group (SRG). The program is also ideal for those returning after a long break or who want to get fit and healthy through running.

As part of club membership, the program is available at Gisborne and begins on March 7. The group meets every Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm and 8am Sunday at the Aquatic centre, 6 Aitken St, Gisborne. The program runs for 13 weeks, with a goal of completing a non-stop five km run after eight weeks and extended to 10km after 13 weeks.

Club membership is great value at only $10 for individuals or $15 for families. Members enjoy access to a vibrant social network, running programs and a monthly newsletter; not to mention generous discounts from the club’s sponsors/event partners.

Memorable end of year celebrations Towards the end of last year there were many extra events rescheduled due to the wet weather earlier in the year, so the ladies were fairly busy.

The annual Bacchus Marsh/ Melton Valley, Gisborne Challenge was played at Melton and Gisborne was the successful club.

End-of-year celebrations with past and present members were held in early December. Many ladies came dressed for the occasion and played in a lowkey 12-hole competition with on-course champagne and nibbles supplied by “Santa’s Helpers”. After a great lunch, the annual presentations followed where the winning players received their vouchers.

Congratulations to the ladies on their efforts in 2016.

With a recent State Government grant of $50,000, the Gisborne Dragons Cricket Club plans to extend the nets area to allow up to seven pitches with retractable nets.

These nets will allow the area to be opened right up for general use, with the entire space to be resurfaced with artificial turf.

This exciting improvement to facilities will make it possible for all 22 Gisborne teams to train in good conditions.

The club is now seeking further assistance to upgrade a fifth cricket ground in Gisborne to cater properly for junior games.

South Gisborne Tennis Club’s All Abilities event for International Day of Disability in December was enjoyed by all. For more information on the weekly tennis program contact Gail on 0403 760 272.

Young cricketers do well in January comps Gisborne Juniors played some great cricket in the ‘Intersport Sportz Biz’ Junior Country Week Finals in Ballarat in January but missed out on top honours. Gisborne Green was defeated by Ballarat Gold in both the U13 and U15.

In the eight team competitions Gisborne Green finished runners-up with Gisborne White placed fourth in the Under 13s, and in the Under 15s Gisborne Green were runners-up and Gisborne White finished seventh.

Meanwhile in the Under Age State Championships, Central Highlands’ results were disappointing but Gisborne youngsters did well with Sam McCaskill top scoring on 38 against the Western Waves, and Riley Vernon top scoring with 37 in the next match at Merv Hughes Oval. Josh McDonald was the star with the ball with 4 for 19 in the Highlanders win over the Barwon Rockets. In a later game against the Rockets Riley Vernon continued his consistent week with 35, and an 87 run seventh wicket partnership between Sam Harris (Golden Point CC) [43] and Harry Jones (Gisborne CC) [41] nearly saw the Highlanders get over the line, just falling four runs short.

A brilliant century from Gisborne’s Riley Vernon was not quite enough for the Central Highlands against the Western Waves in another thriller.

Riley struck a majestic 113 not out from 164 balls including 11 fours and 2 sixes to take the Highlanders to 5 for 202.

Macedon Ranges Bowling Club keeps winning against the odds The club is gearing up for a finals campaign for all their Saturday and Midweek Pennant Teams as the CHBD home and away season draws to an end.

Camaraderie among the members is high as this small club in the CHBD battles to complete against the might of Gisborne, Bacchus Marsh, and Kyneton. Results are falling the way of the little club with its best season to date.

Leading the way in Division Two is skipper Adrian Grant with seven wins from eight games, while in Division Three Saturday Pennant, 90-year-old Syd Billinghurst sits a creditable second position with seven and a half wins from 10 games in that competition.

Midweek Pennant Division three shows Ross Stapleton on top of the skippers’ table with six wins from his six games as skip and is the standout skip in that competition as it stands after round 10.

Macedon’s next Barefoot Bowls night is February 4 from 5.30pm; the cost is $10.

Ruth Hare 20 April 1925 – 27 November 2016

William Albert Byrne 9 January 1924 – 13 November 2016

Ruth was born in Elmore and was the second youngest of six children to Charles and Isabel Houlden. Ruth attended Creek View State School and Bendigo High School. On leaving school Ruth helped on her parents’ wheat and sheep property. In 1944 Ruth met local Creek View school headmaster, Ronald Hare. They formed a friendship which developed Ruth Hare into a loving relationship and on her 21st birthday in 1946, Ruth and Ronald married at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Bendigo. Ruth soon adjusted to being the wife of a school teacher and a life of moving around Victorian country towns where Ronald was headmaster. They had five children: Leigh, Glenys, Pamela, Athol and Ewan. Every January they holidayed at Apollo Bay and in her retirement years at Mooloolaba in Queensland. When Ronald retired in 1979 they moved to Woodend.

At an early age Ruth learnt to play the piano and being the wife of a school teacher this was a great asset. She was also church organist and joined a dance band called the HiLos. Music just flowed out of her!

Ruth was also an avid tennis player and she played competition tennis twice a week up to age 72. She loved doing crosswords and crocheting, baking and gardening were her many pleasures. She was also an avid Collingwood supporter!

When Ronald died in 1998, Ruth continued her active life in Woodend being involved with the Church, RSL, Senior Citizens, Op Shop and tennis. In 2001, Ruth was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the Minister of Community Services in recognition for her work in the community.

In 2002, Ruth moved to Gisborne and began attending the local Senior Citizens, where she met and formed a lasting friendship with Dennis Swainson. Later she joined the Riddells Creek Senior Citizens.

After being diagnosed with cancer in September 2016, Ruth passed away at the Epworth Hospital. She is survived by her five children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Ruth’s funeral service was held on December 1 at the Gisborne Uniting Church. A private cremation followed.

Bill grew up on the family farm in Trentham with his parents Eugene and Elizabeth, brother Les and sister Jean.

He attended school in Trentham and upon leaving school worked on the farm.

Bill married Elsie Bond from Casterton and they Bill Byrne set up their home in Gisborne where he established a carrying business carting logs to the Gisborne Saw Mill. During the 1970s, Bill and Elsie were proprietors of the Gisborne Motel and following that they ran the Gisborne Produce store at the corner of Hamilton and Brantome Streets. Bill worked hard and still maintained his carrying business with the support of Elsie, son Geoff and daughter Helen.

Gisborne was growing at a steady pace and in the early 1980s the business closed to make way for a shopping centre and Bill and Elsie moved into their house in Goode Street.

Bill’s involvement in the Gisborne CFA brought him many rewards, great friendships, a community service achievement and a CFA life membership. He was one of the founding members in 1944 and was Captain from 1957-1969. Living directly across the road from the fire station meant he could have the fire truck ready as other brigade members were arriving!

Bill was known as ‘Gran Gran’ to his grandchildren and he was loved and admired by all his family. He would hook up the caravan and take them to places including Bairnsdale, Echuca, Benalla and Beechworth. Some of the things the grandchildren remember about Bill are his whistling, trademark hat and his stories about his childhood farm days or the travels he and Nan took around Australia in the caravan.

Bill was a much admired and well known and respected man in the Gisborne community. Elsie passed away in December 2014. They had two children, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Bill passed away at Warrina Retirement Village and a funeral service was held at St Paul’s Anglican Church, Gisborne on November 8. A burial at the Gisborne Cemetery followed.

Calder Freeway-Station Road Interchange Gisborne ramp closure and detours February 2017

Road users are reminded that the Melbourne bound entry ramp from Station Road onto the Calder Freeway at Gisborne is closed while works are underway to upgrade the Calder FreewayStation Road intersection.

For a more reliable journey, we are asking all road users to plan their regular trips ahead of time, including becoming familiar with using the detours for journeys toward Melbourne.

Where The Melbourne bound entry ramp from Station Road onto the Calder Freeway will be closed for around five weeks.

ABC comes to Gisborne for Peter Barcham lecture Dr Rachael Kohn has presented the program The Spirit of Things for ABC Radio since 1997. Rachael will give a lecture called “Faith has nothing to fear” at Gisborne Uniting Church, Brantome Street, on Monday March 6 at 7.30pm.

Born in Canada, Rachael has won numerous Dr Rachael Kohn awards for her books and broadcasts. “New Believers Reimagining God” is one such award-winning publication.

Her lecture in Gisborne is one of the Peter Barcham Memorial Lecture series which honour a former principal of Gisborne Secondary College. For more information phone 5428 6700.

St Paul’s Op Shop Jottings After four weeks’ break from the Op Shop during the Christmas and school holidays, our volunteers are looking forward to resuming work at the Op Shop, but for a handful of us it was business as usual in the sorting area with lots of clothing, toys, books and brica-brac coming in on a daily basis. We thank you for your continued support with donations of clothing etc at our Op Shop.

The Almighty Book & Bric-a-brac 2 Day Sale in the Parish Hall on Jan 21-22 was a great success. Proceeds of the sale will be donated to the ongoing work of the Chaplain at the Gisborne Secondary College.

The Op Shop opening times remain the same this year. Tuesday and Saturday 10am to 1pm, Wednesday to Friday 10am to 4pm.

We encourage donors of clothing to use plastic bags when placing them in the clothing bin at the front of the Op Shop.

House of the Rock has welcomed 2017 with great joy and hope. We are looking forward to a new Kids’ program commencing, which will keep everyone busy from a leadership point of view, and challenge and inspire the children to seek God in a creative and fun way.

This month will see wedding vows exchanged as Sue and Peter celebrate their marriage with all their friends and family filling the church to capacity! Our little church often celebrates important events when there is standing room only, and this wedding will be no exception.

Our intrepid mission team have enjoyed rejuvenating their bodies and minds following an outstandingly successful trip to India last November. Hundreds of gifts and basic items were distributed to men, women and children throughout our schools and children’s homes, lives were changed and hearts were healed.

Our Op shop in Prince Street has new stock at bargain prices, and a trip to this treasure trove is never disappointing. All profits are sown directly into our missions.

Finally, we wish all students, children and adults, a happy and successful year of study as you return to school and university.

100 Years Ago From the pages of the old Gisborne Gazette FEBRUARY 1917 Daylight Saving Bill – It is worthy of note that “Truth” was the only paper that had the courage and initiative to protest against the absurd Bill under which the clocks were put ahead for certain months of the year. There was really no demand for the measure, which was forced upon the people of the Commonwealth because no one took the trouble to oppose it.

Melton Shire Council have resolved to ask their Federal representative to use his influence to have the Bill repealed, as great inconvenience was being caused to the farmers of the district, especially those compelled to bringing their hay in an hour earlier. This scheme is not finding much favour in the Toolern Vale district, as many of the farmers keep one clock for Sundays and the trains, and another for every day use at home.

Gisborne Fire Brigade – A meeting was held on Tues., when there was a good attendance.

The reel and hoses were tested, and members received instruction in the use of the hydrant, method of coupling etc. Subscription lists are issued to provide for other equipment, and make some renewals of what there is. It was resolved to meet on Sat. afternoon to repair the hose fittings and on Tues. evening at 8.30 for practice. New members will be welcomed.

The Fire Brigade should receive the support and encouragement of the householders of the district.

The Electric Light – Gisborne Shire Council has resolved that the price of electric light to the consumers be increased from 9d to 1s. per unit. There was no help for this, as the system was worked at a loss and that could not continue. Even at the advanced rate, the cost of lighting will not be greater than under the old system, and the ratepayers have the advantage of a much better system.

Stocking the Streams – The Fisheries Dept has been stocking the streams by the successful transport from the Goulburn weir of 5200 small Macquarie perch, sometimes called Murray bream. Of these, 4000 have been liberated in various streams, including 200 in Deep Creek, Romsey. Although liberated, anglers should remember that no fish of this kind must be captured unless it is at least 10 inches in length, and no fish must be caught at all in October and November. It is a pity no local anglers have put in an application for some of these fish. Some that were liberated last year were caught weighing between 2 and 3 lbs.

The War – The sensation of the week has been caused by America breaking off diplomatic relations with Germany on account of the submarine war. America is actively preparing for war, which is almost certain to follow on the first attack by the Germans on an American ship.
