HOME PAGE From the Editor's desk with February editor Bryan Power Welcome back loyal readers! It’s good to be up and going again, bringing you the news of what is happening locally. I guess that the majority of you are back at work, and as this edition goes to press, hundreds of our local youngsters are enjoying the excitement of heading back to school. Be sure to watch out for them as you are driving.

Farewells Since our last edition we have lost two of our regular writers to retirement: Shirley McKeown who penned The ’Rook Revisited' column and Kerry Langmaid, the Gisborne Garden Club reporter. Thank you so much Shirley and Kerry for your always interesting articles over so many years.

More sadly, I’m sorry to report the death of Michael O’Connor. For a number of years before his move to Queensland, Michael wrote an excellent monthly column featuring the stories of long-time Gazette advertisers and sponsors. Michael returned to Gisborne last December but died shortly after. I hope to have his obituary in next month’s edition.

Council wants you to have your say You’ll find several articles in this edition about matters that Council is seeking your opinion on.

I’ve even managed to have the deadline for our readers extended by a week for your responses to the Arts and Culture Strategy (see below). A democracy only works if a range of voices are heard so make yours one of them.

The GREAT Association is also asking you to have your say on a proposal for a performance amphitheatre in Gisborne – see details on page 4.

Good news for women and girls The sports pages are bursting with news about the achievements of local girl cricketers, and the excitement as girls’ footy training gets under way. Very welcome therefore is the news that female change room facilities are going to be built at Gardiner Reserve.

The other good news is that after many, many years of inaction, Council has adopted a Master Plan for Gisborne Botanical Gardens. We will provide an article about this exciting development in next month’s Gazette. Congratulations to Amanda Gauci and her group of supporters who have worked so hard to reach this goal.

Distraction enemy of safe roads: more cyclists dead It was a tragic end to 2017 for several of our local families. We were absolutely shattered by the death of two local riders killed by cars, and in similar circumstances.

At Bike Safe Macedon Ranges, we are big advocates of a shared responsibility model to road safety.

As car drivers and cyclists, fathers and mothers, sons and daughters we need to look out for ourselves and for others on our roads. Unfortunately, the best infrastructure in the world and being visible by running day time lights, for example, can only work if drivers are paying attention. In the world of the “smart” phone, too many of us feel the need to always be on our phones, the fear of missing out.

We live in a country where many of us are privileged enough to own a car. Yet, we seem to treat that privilege to drive as a background activity, something that we can do while doing something else like reading or looking at our phones. Is that fear of missing out enough to risk the life of another on our roads? When you drive, there is nothing more important than piloting that vehicle safely.

Everything else can wait.

Please, please concentrate on driving and leave that phone until you stop. We owe it to ourselves and to our community.

Sound shell proposed for Gisborne Community's views sought on venue idea

Community consultation sought Some years ago, The GREAT Association Committee of Management determined to set aside some of the income derived from the Olde Time Market and the Gazette in order to have built a much-needed facility in the parklands in Gisborne, to cater for musical events, drama, outdoor weddings and parties.

The proposed sculptural structure was designed with curves that represent the natural course of the nearby Jackson Creek and will be constructed of long lasting and flood-proof materials.

Following extensive discussions with Macedon Ranges Shire Council officers, a location has been mutually approved and it is planned that toilet facilities will eventually be constructed in the vicinity to serve visitors to the Adventure Playground, the Botanic Gardens and the proposed Sound Shell.

Please call at the GREAT Centre in Hamilton Street to inspect the detailed plans so generously prepared by Eve of etha Architecture and the models built by Gisborne Men’s Shed.

We need your views on this exciting project, as general community support is essential before this project can come to fruition.

Pet lovers wanted

Do you like to tinker?

Local pet rescue organisations will be visiting the PETstock store in Robertson Street, Gisborne, on Sunday February 4 to raise pet adoption awareness as part of National Pet Adoption Day. Every year, approximately 200,000 healthy pets remain unclaimed in Australia’s pounds and shelters.

In a bid to make the adoption process more accessible, PETstock is urging the community to visit the Gisborne store to learn about pet adoption, fostering and the rescue organisations behind them.

It’s a chance for locals to have a cuddle and share some love with some rescued pets in-store or follow up with their local pet rescue groups to find an adorable pet in need of a forever home.

The 2018 Macedon bike fix-up season is here.

Top acts set for annual music festival The 6th annual Macedon Ranges Music Festival is set to take off again on March 3 at the Gisborne Steam Park. The family-friendly event will be headlined by Mick Thomas, the legendary singer and songwriter of Australian folk/rock band Weddings Parties Anything. The Winter Gypsy, a six-piece Indie/Rock outfit from Adelaide, will be another drawcard that will appear alongside a line-up of 12 main stage acts from the Macedon Ranges and across Australia.

The event is entirely volunteerrun and proudly donates 100% of its ticket sales directly to the nonprofit organisation, Cambodian Kids Foundation. The festival will appeal

Former 'Age' journalist to be guest speaker Barney Zwartz wrote for The Age for 32 years, the last 12 as religion editor. He is interested in Barney Zwartz the interaction between the secular world and the spiritual life. When he visits Gisborne on Monday February 19 he will give a lecture on “The Challenge of Secularism”.

As well as writing on religion, he writes on classical music, especially opera, and does research for the Centre for Public Christianity.

The lecture at Gisborne Uniting Church, 23 Brantome Street, is at 7.30pm, with opportunities to interact with Mr Zwartz.

The annual lecture is named for the late Peter Barcham, who is also commemorated at Gisborne Secondary College with the Peter Barcham Theatre.

Indian glamour comes to Mt Macedon While Mount Macedon is famous for the stunning autumn colours of its European gardens, on Saturday January 6 Mount Macedon Road residents witnessed a different sort of colour with the bright spectacle of an Indian wedding parade.

Hosted by the groom’s sister and brother-in-law, the marriage of Daniel McLeish and Ashima Anand drew largely

from Indian Hindu traditions, with Scottish bagpipes referencing Daniel’s heritage.

Walking up from Cameron Lodge, the groom’s party paused outside Greystanes for Daniel to mount a white horse bedecked in gorgeous Indian regalia.

In accordance with custom, Ashima’s young nephew Sahil joined Daniel as the ‘sarbala’, who is usually the groom’s young nephew or cousin.

Led by the piper and an Indian drummer, the parade then danced up the driveway of Elimatta to meet the bride’s party which included family and friends from England, America, India and Germany.

Recovering from an emergency Following the immediate emergency, as soon as possible after the event and where necessary, Council will

open a recovery centre. This centre will be located as close as possible to the affected area.

At a recovery centre you can get information about emergency grants, clean-up, health and wellbeing, housing and insurance.

You can also register for assistance including counselling, hazardous tree assessment and water tank cleaning and refill if needed.

Experience shows that those people who have prepared their property and have a bushfire survival plan recover more quickly from an emergency.

Lions Club hits the mark with festival The Bendigo Bank Gisborne Christmas Festival held on Friday December 8, had a great family atmosphere.

Large crowds watched the street parade and participated in the activities on Gardiner Reserve, including enjoying the large variety of market and food stalls, free children’s activities, live music, carnival rides and concluding with a fireworks display.

The Gisborne and District Lions Club, who produced the event, is extremely appreciative of the entities that supported the Festival through being platinum, gold or silver sponsors.

The winner of the popular Monster Christmas Wheelbarrow Raffle which was drawn on the night was Fred Sewell of Gisborne.

Prizes were awarded to those judged to be the best participants in the parade. First prize was awarded to Our Village Child Care, second prize to Gisborne Vintage Machinery Society and third prize to St Brigid’s Primary.

While there has been an extremely positive reaction to the parade, the activities on the oval, and the exposure to entities that provided sponsorship funding, the Lions Club is seeking feedback to enhance the event in future years.

Family thanks community for help after son's accident

James is on the mend

James Argus (13), Accident on November 30, Kilmore Road, New Gisborne.

The Argus family would like to thank everyone who helped our son after his accident last year. There were people who held umbrellas protecting James from the sun and those who comforted him until the emergency services arrived.

Thank you to the emergency services personnel who delivered

expert care. And there were neighbours and friends who helped us cope and got us what we needed from our home, drove to the hospital, and in the subsequent days many provided food to our home.

We had numerous messages of support from James’ friends, old primary school, footy club, and Salesian College whose staff proved they really do care about their students, and the Principal

who went above and beyond.

James was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition. He was discharged home 14 days later.

His injuries included a fractured skull/eye socket and facial lacerations which are all healing well.

After six weeks in a wheelchair because of a dislocated hip he is now up on crutches. He has an external fixator on his broken lower leg which he will have for three months.

We all realise the outcome of this accident could have been so very different. Please know that whatever you did at the accident scene or in the days following, be it big or small, enabled us to have our boy home for Christmas. His injuries will heal and he will be his old self soon.

Rotary helps prepare pupils for job interviews Gisborne Rotary was proud to assist with an Interview Skills Program at Gisborne Club of Gisborne Secondary College on November 26 which was an initiative of Woodend Rotary.

Twenty-three Year 9 students attended the workshop which was intended to provide interview skills for students to use at job interviews in the future.

All students were keen participants and the event was judged to be beneficial to all involved.

The Annual Flea Market for the Macedon Rural Fire Brigade was initiated in 1968 and has been successfully conducted every year since, with the exception of 1983 and 1984 due to the Ash Wednesday bushfires that swept through Macedon on February 16, 1983.

The brigade is busily preparing for the 2018 Fleamarket and we will have the usual auction, bric-abrac, books, kids’ toys, bikes, small electrical goods, big boys’ toys, plants and, of course, the food kitchen.

Gisborne CWA focuses on Peru for 2018 Gisborne CWA's December meeting finished with a lovely lunch and the drawing of our Christmas hamper raffle.

Barbara Davis, chaplain at Gisborne Secondary College, drew the winning tickets and then we handed her the proceeds, a cheque for $1500, to help with her work at the school. First prize went to Dulcie Sharp and second to Allie Clare. Thank you to all our ticket sellers and buyers and the IGA complex for allowing us to set up and sell our tickets there for a couple of weeks.

Thank you also to Edie and Kathy for making and distributing little Christmas puddings to all residents at the Oaks. They have been doing this for quite a few years now and I’m sure it is appreciated by all.

Our country of study for 2018 is Peru and we have already learnt from Janet that Paddington Bear originated in Peru and that their main Christmas celebration is on December 24.

Another thank you to the Men’s Shed in Gisborne for putting in place our CWA sign on the entrance into town.

We had a fun day at Helen Ryvitch's instead of a January meeting with mini golf, lunch and a lot of chatter. In the same week, a trip to Bendigo by train to see the Edith Head exhibition at the Art Gallery was enjoyed by a group of our ladies.

Our next meeting is February 12 at 10am at Gisborne Secondary College.

Holidays are over, school is back and Macedon CWA restarts its activities. Macedon CWA trusts the festive season was enjoyable and safe for everyone. Maybe joining CWA was one of your resolutions!

Members and spouses enjoyed a great Christmas lunch at the Top of the Range restaurant in December.

Once again the food was good, fellowship congenial and the outlook second to none.

Due to computer glitches, our new correspondent, Jenny Strang, was unable to write the column this month but we anticipate she will be on the job in March.

Our first meeting is on Tuesday February 20 at 1pm, then the third Tuesday each month. We are getting ready for the Arts and Craft Exhibition and collecting materials for baby packs for overseas aid projects.

Mothers and babies are welcome to join us, but I warn you, babies risk being spoilt! We would love to see you.

Helen Sankey is 2017's community Local Hero.

2017 award announced The Bendigo Bank Local Hero award was presented to Gisborne resident Helen Sankey at the Gisborne Community Carols on Sunday, December 10.

Helen has contributed an incredible amount to the Gisborne community and in her acceptance speech she called on people to get involved and help out with local organisations and initiatives.

The Carols were held at Dixon Field. The return of Carols to an outdoor venue was welcomed by the hundreds of locals who turned out on a perfect summer’s evening to watch students from local schools perform as well as the Carols Choir accompanied by Jem Sherwill and Jaidan Shapcott, and pre-entertainment by the very talented Jimmy and Paige.

The crowd enjoyed a sausage sizzle put on by the Little Athletics Club, coffee and icecream and a visit from Santa on the fire truck.

Thanks to the GREAT Association for providing funding, to RT Edgar, Bendigo Bank, Book Bonding, all the performers, and those who supported the event.

Friends of Red Cross Welcome to the New Year. I hope that all members of the Gisborne Friends of Red Cross have had an enjoyable break over the holiday season.

The first meeting for this year will be on Friday February 2 in the Community Centre at 1.30pm. During the meeting presentations for Long Service to Red Cross will be awarded by Mary Wicks, Deputy Zone Chair. It is hoped that as many members as possible will attend to make this a special afternoon. New members and friends are also welcome to attend.

Members may like to make some suggestions for activities for meetings throughout the year.

The following meeting will be held on March 2 and the next one on April 6. Members are reminded that for the April meeting the Blumes fashion parade will be held.

Looking forward to seeing as many members as possible in February.

Shave Off at Macedon supports kids with cancer Macedon Railway Hotel proudly sponsored a Shave Off on December 22 to raise money for Camp Quality, which is a charity supporting children with cancer.

Two locals, Russell Sanders and Tim Johnson, generously donated their considerable beards for this cause.

Rob Cornish donated his time to trim, clip and shave Russell and Tim.

Not to be outdone, Rob donated his head of hair for the cause as well. A great, fun-filled night was had by all and was capped off with a live band.

Many locals attended this event and dug deep in their pockets resulting in a whopping $2123 being raised.

A big thank you and congratulations to the locals who supported and donated to this worthwhile cause.

The Gisborne Bowling Club has strongly supported Macedon Ranges Legacy for many years, mainly thanks to former President and current Secretary, Bronte Daniel.

The club has conducted tournaments from which the proceeds have been donated to benefit Macedon Ranges war widows.

Also, the club has provided its car parking area to the Legacy group to help raise funds on Gisborne Market days.

The current Chair of Macedon Ranges Legacy, Carl Schiller OAM CSM, advises that the club is the community’s greatest single contributor supporting local war widows.

Late last year, Bronte Daniel presented a cheque for $1,250 raised by the club to Macedon Ranges Legacy.

Welcome to new year of programs and activities

The Scouts are regular workers on Clean Up Australia Day.

You can help out on Clean Up Australia Day 1st Gisborne Scouts will again be organising the litter collection in Gisborne on Sunday March 4.

Please don’t leave it just to the scouts and their families. Make an effort to join them at the Scout Hall in Howey Street at 10am. You’ll be given a bag and a designated area.

If you can’t make it, how about doing a cleanup in your street or at a local park or sports ground.

Locals give generously to refugee group Once again the generous Gisborne folk have shown their compassion in response to our grocery drive held in the Village Plaza in early December.

Nine trolley-loads of non-perishable food stuffs and groceries were donated and $500 in cash gifted to assist refugees and asylum seekers doing it tough in our community.

A special thankyou to the three young brothers who used their pocket money to buy dry foods.

Also thank you to the contributions from IGA, Gisborne Fresh and Bakers Delight towards the picnic for asylum seekers and refugees which MRRAR hosted on a lovely sunny Sunday in December.

We were able to provide a relaxing, happy, country experience for about 40 attendees. The children had a ball and all the adults seemed to enjoy their time with us.

We go “back to school” on Monday February 5 and our first morning will be full of news about the committee’s proposals for the year, including some changes of style to enliven our days. I’ve come across a source of “Jokes for Senior Citizens” which I hope will give us all a laugh or a groan. We are also looking to find ways to enable us to do two educational excursions during the year and some classes of three-four weeks on interesting topics in second semester.

Afternoons are given over to general discussion of current affairs, films, TV shows, books, etc with one of our own members as moderator for the session. Everyone is invited – firmly! – to take a turn at this role at least once a year.

On February 12 the CFA will give us advice on preparing for bushfires, and on the following Monday, 19th, we will discuss issues arising from this. The committee believes it would be valuable to set up a “phone tree” for contacting each other so we can make sure that no one is left without help.

The final Monday, February 26, we have a speaker from the Council On The Ageing on a topic of major importance: Advanced Care Planning – Making your wishes known.

We meet at 11 Hamilton Street, Gisborne, on Monday mornings at 10.30am. All are welcome to stay for lunch (BYO), with free tea and coffee, followed by the afternoon session.

Mothers and babies welcome at Macedon CWA February sees things coming alive again.

Holidays are over, school is back and Macedon CWA restarts its activities. Macedon CWA trusts the festive season was enjoyable and safe for everyone. Maybe joining CWA was one of your resolutions!

Members and spouses enjoyed a great Christmas lunch at the Top of the Range restaurant in December.

Once again the food was good, fellowship congenial and the outlook second to none.

Due to computer glitches, our new correspondent, Jenny Strang, was unable to write the column this month but we anticipate she will be on the job in March.

Our first meeting is on Tuesday February 20 at 1pm, then the third Tuesday each month. We are getting ready for the Arts and Craft Exhibition and collecting materials for baby packs for overseas aid projects.

Mothers and babies are welcome to join us, but I warn you, babies risk being spoilt! We would love to see you.

Helen Sankey is 2017's community Local Hero.

2017 award announced The Bendigo Bank Local Hero award was presented to Gisborne resident Helen Sankey at the Gisborne Community Carols on Sunday, December 10.

Helen has contributed an incredible amount to the Gisborne community and in her acceptance speech she called on people to get involved and help out with local organisations and initiatives.

The Carols were held at Dixon Field. The return of Carols to an outdoor venue was welcomed by the hundreds of locals who turned out on a perfect summer’s evening to watch students from local schools perform as well as the Carols Choir accompanied by Jem Sherwill and Jaidan Shapcott, and pre-entertainment by the very talented Jimmy and Paige.

The crowd enjoyed a sausage sizzle put on by the Little Athletics Club, coffee and icecream and a visit from Santa on the fire truck.

Thanks to the GREAT Association for providing funding, to RT Edgar, Bendigo Bank, Book Bonding, all the performers, and those who supported the event.

Friends of Red Cross Welcome to the New Year. I hope that all members of the Gisborne Friends of Red Cross have had an enjoyable break over the holiday season.

The first meeting for this year will be on Friday February 2 in the Community Centre at 1.30pm. During the meeting presentations for Long Service to Red Cross will be awarded by Mary Wicks, Deputy Zone Chair. It is hoped that as many members as possible will attend to make this a special afternoon. New members and friends are also welcome to attend.

Members may like to make some suggestions for activities for meetings throughout the year.

The following meeting will be held on March 2 and the next one on April 6. Members are reminded that for the April meeting the Blumes fashion parade will be held.

Shave Off at Macedon supports kids with cancer Macedon Railway Hotel proudly sponsored a Shave Off on December 22 to raise money for Camp Quality, which is a charity supporting children with cancer.

Two locals, Russell Sanders and Tim Johnson, generously donated their considerable beards for this cause.

Rob Cornish donated his time to trim, clip and shave Russell and Tim.

Not to be outdone, Rob donated his head of hair for the cause as well. A great, fun-filled night was had by all and was capped off with a live band.

Many locals attended this event and dug deep in their pockets resulting in a whopping $2123 being raised.

A big thank you and congratulations to the locals who supported and donated to this worthwhile cause.

The Gisborne Bowling Club has strongly supported Macedon Ranges Legacy for many years, mainly thanks to former President and current Secretary, Bronte Daniel.

The club has conducted tournaments from which the proceeds have been donated to benefit Macedon Ranges war widows.

Also, the club has provided its car parking area to the Legacy group to help raise funds on Gisborne Market days.

The current Chair of Macedon Ranges Legacy, Carl Schiller OAM CSM, advises that the club is the community’s greatest single contributor supporting local war widows.

Late last year, Bronte Daniel presented a cheque for $1,250 raised by the club to Macedon Ranges Legacy.

Welcome to new year of programs and activities

The Scouts are regular workers on Clean Up Australia Day.

You can help out on Clean Up Australia Day 1st Gisborne Scouts will again be organising the litter collection in Gisborne on Sunday March 4.

Please don’t leave it just to the scouts and their families. Make an effort to join them at the Scout Hall in Howey Street at 10am. You’ll be given a bag and a designated area.

If you can’t make it, how about doing a cleanup in your street or at a local park or sports ground.

Locals give generously to refugee group Once again the generous Gisborne folk have shown their compassion in response to our grocery drive held in the Village Plaza in early December.

Nine trolley-loads of non-perishable food stuffs and groceries were donated and $500 in cash gifted to assist refugees and asylum seekers doing it tough in our community.

A special thankyou to the three young brothers who used their pocket money to buy dry foods.

Also thank you to the contributions from IGA, Gisborne Fresh and Bakers Delight towards the picnic for asylum seekers and refugees which MRRAR hosted on a lovely sunny Sunday in December.

We were able to provide a relaxing, happy, country experience for about 40 attendees. The children had a ball and all the adults seemed to enjoy their time with us.

We go “back to school” on Monday February 5 and our first morning will be full of news about the committee’s proposals for the year, including some changes of style to enliven our days. I’ve come across a source of “Jokes for Senior Citizens” which I hope will give us all a laugh or a groan. We are also looking to find ways to enable us to do two educational excursions during the year and some classes of three-four weeks on interesting topics in second semester.

Afternoons are given over to general discussion of current affairs, films, TV shows, books, etc with one of our own members as moderator for the session. Everyone is invited – firmly! – to take a turn at this role at least once a year.

On February 12 the CFA will give us advice on preparing for bushfires, and on the following Monday, 19th, we will discuss issues arising from this. The committee believes it would be valuable to set up a “phone tree” for contacting each other so we can make sure that no one is left without help.

The final Monday, February 26, we have a speaker from the Council On The Ageing on a topic of major importance: Advanced Care Planning – Making your wishes known.

We meet at 11 Hamilton Street, Gisborne, on Monday mornings at 10.30am. All are welcome to stay for lunch (BYO), with free tea and coffee, followed by the afternoon session.

ARTS Threat of record rain did not spoil show Phoenix Macedon Ranges Art & Craft group had another successful December exhibition despite the threat of record-breaking weather.

Our members put on a stunning display of a wide variety of art and craftwork, which was appreciated by the many loyal followers of the group who braved the bad weather and attended the opening. The Courthouse in Gisborne provided welcome shelter to Sunday market attendees who then availed themselves of the opportunity to buy many unusual and interesting handmade items for Christmas gifts.

Mount Players prepare for first show Rehearsals are already in full swing for our first show of 2018. A powerful drama, The Offshore Island, is being directed by Cherry Servis and runs from March 9 to March 25.

Set in England 10 years after a nuclear explosion, a widow and her family have lived in a valley untouched by the war or its subsequent contamination. They have had no contact with the outside world until one day a group of Americans arrive.

The family’s initial delight and gratitude soon gives way to concern. Written in 1954 at the height of the Cold War, the story still rings true today, although with different protagonists. Tickets are now selling.

Auditions for Les Miserables Yes, this incredibly popular musical will be staged at our own Mount View Theatre in August. Come and see the critters at The Gallery Welcome to 2018. The Gallery Mt Macedon has planned a program of talented local and visiting artists to bring you their creative journeys while seeing their concepts and places that have inspired them.

In January members came together for an Open Weekend Look Learn Create to share their skills with others through workshops and demonstrations while enjoying food and local wine al fresco.

For February, The Gallery's exhibition theme is ‘critters’. The origin of the word derives from creature and refers to an animal or any living creature, from a wolf to a spider, eg ‘little furry critters’.

In derogatory terms it also refers to a particular person.

I like one contemporary version: twitter-critter – someone who spends WAY too much time on Twitter.

What's happening at Macedon Ranges Art group Macedon Ranges Art Group trusts everybody had a safe and happy new year and are looking forward to a creative 2018 in their artistic endeavours.

Our secretary, Robyn, has organised two social/painting days per month at the Woodend Neighbourhood House. They will run from 10.30am to 1.30pm on the first and third Fridays of each month beginning on Friday February 2. Non-MRAG members are welcome. A fee of $5 per person per session is charged to cover studio hiring costs.

This is an excellent way to meet other like-minded artists in a relaxed and friendly way. No need to book, just turn up.

This year again, the art group will be a sponsor in

the Woodend Winter Arts Festival in June. This event attracts many visitors. We will hold our Winter Art Show at the Woodend Bowling Club during the festival. This is a wonderful way for members to display and sell their art. More details on this event will be featured in future editions.

Another popular activity of the group is the one-day workshop run by some of the best artists in Victoria.

The committee is currently planning these workshops for 2018 and details will be given as they come to hand.

Bumper concert season at Resurrection The 2018 concert season at the Church of the Resurrection, Macedon, starts on February 17 with a twilight organ recital by Douglas Lawrence at 5pm.

Well-known to local audiences as Director of the Australian Chamber Choir, Douglas will present a program spanning the earliestknown notated work for organ, works by the great Baroque masters, to very recent compositions.

The season will also include three contrasting concerts Douglas Lawrence at the given by the Australian Metzler organ of St George's Chamber Choir, the church in Marl, Germany. first featuring Mozart’s celebrated Requiem, with instruments of the composer’s time (including basset horns). A special highlight of the second concert will be a choral arrangement of Barber’s haunting Adagio for Strings. The third comprises a program of joyous Christmas music.

Entitled High Heels and Ghillies, the May concert by the Evergreen Ensemble promises to be a special treat, when a consort of strings with soprano and dancers perform Baroque dance music from France and Scotland.

In addition, music lovers can look forward to a program of operatic solos and ensembles performed by local soprano Rosemary Cocklin and colleagues, a return visit from the celebrated Seraphim Trio, a harpsichord recital focusing on Beethoven’s love of Bach’s music by Elizabeth Anderson, an organ recital by Dianne Gome and a concert of music associated with the stage (plays, musicals and opera) by Young Voices of Macedon.

INGREDIENTS 1 cup rolled oats 1 cup flour 50g butter or margarine 1 cup mashed potato

Makes 23-30

½ cup grated tasty cheese ½ teaspoon salt Milk if required Extra flour

Sprinkle extra flour on board and roll out dough thinly. Cut into small squares, strips or circles.

Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan forced)

Place shapes onto lightly greased baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes until crisp and brown.

Combine oats and flour and rub in butter. Mix in mashed potato,cheese and salt. Add milk if required to make a stiff dough.

Reroll and cut dough until all used.

Store in airtight container.

A great way to use left-over mashed potato.

News from Daly Reserve

Friends of Daly Nature Reserve hope all our readers enjoyed a happy, safe festive season and found time to recharge the batteries.

The committee met in January to analyse the comprehensive report on the reserve received in December from Blue Devil Environment Consulting. Advice given in the report will help in our planning of specific working bees for 2018 in consultation with Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

The report identifies 144 plants which include exotics and weeds but also lists many native flora thriving in significant areas of remnant vegetation which represents an important local environment asset.

Our working bees are open to anyone interested. We welcome newcomers and have tasks to suit all ages and fitness levels.

Our long-handled weeding tools minimise kneeling. Searching for locations of plants, photographing or simply taking notes is very helpful as we build up a complete and progressive picture of Daly Nature Reserve.

We advise wearing a hat and sturdy shoes.

We provide a cuppa and find time for a chat around 11am.

It has been a very dry summer after our long damp winter and spring. Our plants have really been feeling the pressure this summer. Wait until after we have had some good soaking rains before you do any extensive plantings as the soil is quite dry.

This is the time to start planning your winter spring bulb display and put in your orders for bulbs to mail order suppliers and wholesalers.

Roses still continue to supply plenty of flowers for the summer garden, with a flush of flowers developing after any light rain. Salvias too are growing and flowering well this season.

In the the native garden In native garden Strange twisted and deformed growth on the tips of young and established native plants can be a sign of insect damage from thrips, scale and other sap suckers.

Trimming off the distorted tips can remove the pests and their larvae as well as encourage new growth to develop.

A plant that is attacked one season is not necessarily going to be attacked the following season. Plants that are suffering a shortage of moisture, nutrients and/or light, are more susceptible to pest attack.

Creating a better bird habitat will encourage more native birds that feed on these pests for you.

Set aside a day to make some scarecrows for your garden. Use an old ball or saucepan for a head, stuff an old tee-shirt with straw for the body, use garden stakes or large sticks for the framework of arms and legs and add more stuffing to these.

Old CDs tied to string and hanging from branches of fruit trees also help to discourage birds from eating your crop.

InInthe fruit and vegie garden the vegie and fruit garden Make sure plants are watered regularly with a good soak to keep them succulent, particularly the leaf vegetables and carrots. Top up mulch around the plants to keep them moist. After the next good soaking of rain some more summer leaf crops and herbs can be planted out.

Help needed recording plants, animals, fungi We’d like residents to help us understand more about the native plants and animals in the shire by sharing their knowledge on the Victorian Biodiversity Atlas (VBA) – an online database of flora and fauna sightings across Victoria. This information will help us in building our Biodiversity Strategy in 2018.

The new VBA Go website allows

residents to simply record observations of flora and fauna sightings using their smart phone. Once registered, you can take a photo of your observation and upload information to the VBA site immediately.

Jacksons Creek badly in need of extra volunteers The recent loss of several regular members due to relocating and health issues has caused some concern about being able to maintain the banks of our great natural asset. The group only meets on the third Sunday of each month for an hour or two.

After some low level manual labour,

food and drinks are provided.

There are NO fees, NO obligations and NO expectations, but if no one comes there is NO work done and weeds, blackberry, rubbish, willow saplings and other debris will overtake the works already done over the past 17 years.

The path network that borders the

creek links a multitude of sports and recreational facilities, parks and gardens that are used by many for exercise, dog walking and other recreational activities.

The connecting parks are a favourite for locals and many visitors. It would be a pity to see this asset ignored.

Council has started work on two projects to protect and enhance the shire’s natural environment and is inviting feedback from the community at a series of drop-in sessions to be held in February.

The feedback received at these sessions will inform the development of two strategic documents — a Landscape Assessment Study that recognises the importance of the shire’s landscapes and a Biodiversity Strategy to protect the many plants and animals that call the Macedon Ranges home.

The drop-in session at Gisborne will be held on Monday February 12, 4pm–6pm, at the Gisborne Community Centre, 8 Hamilton Street (next to Mechanics Institute).

Megan of Valley Owl Metals Kyabram is a regular at the Gisborne Olde Time Market and has been for the past four years. Megan’s dad taught her how to weld and work with metal.

Always artistic right through her schooling, Megan does all the designs herself, then cuts and welds the steel. She will also do custom work and has made numerous property signs, fire pits and other items requested from sheet steel.

The range of items produced by Valley Owl Metals seems almost endless and each time Megan and her father come to the market there seems to be a new item on display. Come and chat to Megan at the next market and check out the diverse range of products they sell.

The Gazette has presented Sean Doherty with $200 towards the cost of his trip last month to Prague as a member of the Australian delegation to the International Youth Leadership Conference.

Sean was the co-College Captain at Gisborne Secondary College in 2016 during which time he and his fellow captain Eshe Lane provided excellent monthly reports for the Gazette.

by Kilmore Road, Saunders Road and Jackson Creek.

For many years it was the property of Harry White, whose four Melbourne Cup-winning rides on Think Big (twice), Arwon and Hyperno are the stuff of legend.

In 2015 Harry sold Glen Junor to Trent McCamley and Paul Kehoe who have subsequently been developing an innovative vision for the property in consultation with local community groups and Council.

State funding continues for youth program Council has welcomed the State Government's announcement in January that the funding for youth programs includes $95,000 for the Council's Youth Engage Program (YEP!) which encourages young people aged 12-18 to connect with each other through a range of events, activities and training opportunities that are held during school terms at local youth spaces.

Be part of first flash mob at Hanging Rock In February, fans of Hanging Rock and the iconic Picnic at Hanging Rock story will channel their inner Miranda as part of a special flash mob dance event, featuring moves such as the “Corset Conga” and the “Miranda Mirror”.

Starting with a series of community and school dance workshops, Too Many Mirandas culminates in a mass performance on February 24.

Open to everyone, participants can choose to become a “Master Miranda” by attending a dance workshop, or simply pick up the basic Miranda dance moves during rehearsals on the day. Spectators are also welcome.

Too Many Mirandas was conceived by Council’s Arts and Culture team as a way to support community involvement in the arts and mark the 50th Anniversary of

Joan Lindsay’s novel, Picnic at Hanging Rock. It will be a fun-filled activity that is unique to the Macedon Ranges.

Council has prepared a draft environmental management plan for the Gisborne Racecourse Marshland Reserve (comprising the Gisborne Marshlands and Gisborne Steam Park) and Magnet Hill.

The plan sets out the vision for each site and actions aimed at achieving these visions. Concept plans have also been prepared to guide future infrastructure and environmental improvements.

The draft plan or its abridged version are now available for public comment via an online survey, which will help Council to determine whether the draft plan is consistent with the community’s vision for the site.

Copies of the draft can also be accessed from Council’s Gisborne office.

Feedback is invited until Friday 16 February.

Young people take lead on new youth strategy Macedon Ranges Shire Council has appointed 11 young people to take the lead on the preparation of its 2018– 2028 Youth Strategy.

The young people, aged between 16 and 25, will act as co-designers for the strategy, which will guide Council’s programs, initiatives, advocacy and support for young people and their families in the shire over the next 10 years.

The co-designers will lead public consultations and undertake research about what matters most for young people in the shire.

Twenty-one-year-old Gisborne resident Sebastian Antoine is one of the co-designers, and said he was looking forward to being part of the process.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to be a conduit between young people and Council. Most of Picture courtesy Star Weekly the co-designers Sebastian Antoine grew up in the Macedon Ranges, we’re all young and we know what young people are interested in.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has released a draft Localised Planning Statement for Macedon Ranges Shire for community consultation.

The Localised Planning Statement identifies the state-significant attributes of the area and aims to ensure that state-significant landscape and the environmental and cultural values of the shire are protected and enhanced for current and future generations.

The statement also includes longterm settlement boundaries based on the approved structure plans and planning scheme amendments.

With more than 50 per cent of residents leaving the shire for work each day it is vital to create options for residents to work locally.

What a year for Woodend Art Group Life at the Woodend Art Group was hectic in the latter months of last year. Our major annual November Exhibition was a resounding success with an increased first prize of $400. The Marguerite Anderson Memorial Awards shared $300 and six first-time Encouragement Awards for students under 18 years received $50 cash.

The amazing standard of works displayed was reflected in over $5,000 in sales. Well done to all!

VicTrack began a major renovation of our rooms in December which included restumping and replacing the floor boards and repairing/painting the ceiling.

We took the opportunity to update the kitchen and bathroom, have a thorough clean out, buy new furniture and rearrange the rooms. The result is an outstanding venue for further workshops and exhibitions.

Helping to prevent mistreatment of older people A new network that will look at the needs and experiences of older people in the shire who are at risk of being subjected to mistreatment or violence will be established in the Macedon Ranges this year.

The Elder Abuse Prevention Network (EAPN) project will work with participating service providers, older people and the community to develop a framework that contributes to the prevention of elder abuse.

Elder abuse is any form of violence or mistreatment that causes harm to an older person and occurs within a relationship of trust. It is estimated that about six per cent of older people experience such abuse.

The EAPN project is funded through a Victorian Government grant, which will see the establishment of 10 prevention networks throughout the state.

Grants for events and festivals open in March Council’s annual Events and Festivals Grant Program opens from March 1.

Funding and in-kind support is available for not-for-profit and commercial activities that deliver benefit to Macedon Ranges residents.

Options are available for festivals and events of every size and type and include: TIER 1 – designed to support smallscale events or festivals: up to $2,000 cash and $1,000 in-kind support.

TIER 2 – designed for events or festivals that provide a strong economic and community benefit to the shire: up to $6,000 cash and $500 in-kind.

TIER 3 – designed to support major, large-scale events and festivals which display significant economic and/ or community benefit to the shire.

Applicants can apply for a multi-year agreement with $6,000 to $10,000 available per year.

Details of in-kind support available including some permit fees, bin hire and cleaning of public amenities, can be found in the grant kits on Council’s website.

Sir George Verdonand Alton homestead An edited account by Verdon of setting up Alton's gardens in the 1870s. He begins by describing "the most valuable and interesting" shrubs growing on his property a few years after a destructive fire.

"

T

he stringy bark, of which the old forest was mostly composed, has some young representatives which I have preserved. The blackwood or lightwood, one of our most useful and ornamental trees, abounds, while shrubs include the native lilac – which bears a beautiful flower and used to be exhibited in England when Australian plants were in fashion at the shows – the musk, full of perfume when wet, the native mulberry as handsome as any laurel, the dagwood or native hazel, the blanket heath and the coffee berry – a small shrub bearing a beautiful dark crimson berry.

"Then there is the little native currant with its edible fruit, and two kinds of so-called native ash, not unlike the European tree but resembling more nearly the pepper tree, or schinus molle. Our own native pepper tree is found in the gullies and other shady places, where its pointed shining leaves and deep red stem makes a pleasing contrast with their kinds of foliage. The native lily with its mauve-coloured berries grows everywhere in sunshine or shade, and is as useful in covering bare places and filling gaps. In the natural ferntree gully which is one of the chief features of my grounds, water ferns – Dicksonias – hold their accustomed place.

"

ost of my neighbours have cleared their grounds of all the native flora and have made themselves gardens such as one sees in the suburbs of Melbourne.

But beside the cost, it has always seemed to me wrong to make too strong a contrast between the cultivated grounds within one’s gates and the surrounding bush.

I think the main characteristics of the mountain sylvan scenery should be respected and preserved – so in the words of Shakespeare ... I have endeavoured to be guided by the art: 'This is an art which does not mend Nature, change it rather, but the art itself is Nature'.

"As the exotic trees get up I have to remove some of my Australian friends to make space for them, but we never cut down a tree of any sort without a solemn judi-

cial inquiry, and a clear majority of votes in the council, of which my wife, my sons, and the two Turners [neighbours] are members.

"Having found by experience that grapes, peaches and other delicate fruits will not ripen at Macedon, I have given up trying to grow them. I have not hot houses or conservatories, and cultivate nothing that will not flourish out of doors. We have all the small fruits of England in perfection – raspberries and currants, gooseberries, blackberries, walnuts and filberts, besides all the hardy kinds of apples, pears and plums.

"

T

he soil ... is not stiff enough for roses and some other plants we desire to grow – water passes through and disappears in a few minutes, and without irrigation we could not keep the flower borders and terraces fresh and green. But the upper spring is sufficient to water all the higher parts of the grounds, and I have laid pipes everywhere so that none of the cultivated ground is out of reach of a hydrant. The water comes in earthenware pipes from the source in the state forest to three 400-gallon tanks in the kitchen garden, which are painted black to attract the heat so that the chill may be taken off the water before it is used for irrigation. It would be too cold otherwise. From the kitchen garden it is carried in galvanised iron pipes to a tank of brick and cement holding about 4000 gallons, whence it is distributed to the house and grounds. Two clearing pits intercept any earth or floating matter the water may bring down with it, so that when it enters the tank it is absolutely pure. We took it as a great reflection upon our resources in this

respect when a visitor asked what kind of filter we used!

"The grounds are intersected by numerous grass paths by which any part may be reached from any other without steep ascents and descents, which usually make walking in a garden on the side of a mountain so wearisome. Then here and there are rustic seats in shady places whence the best views are to be had.

"

F

rom the verandah, the plains and the sea are the principal objects, but from a summer house a little lower down, the grounds, with the lake, make a pleasing foreground, the village of Upper Macedon in the middle distance. It is one of my chief pleasures to watch the shadows of the clouds passing over the plains in slow and solemn procession and, when they gather round the mountain in autumn, to see the glimpses of the valley opening up as the masses of vapour roll aside and the sun shines on the distant fields as if they were part of another world. Sometimes the plains are quite covered with mist as level as the sea and the hilltops become islands. In the winter there is frost and I have seen the ground covered with snow for three days.

"I have heard very beautiful tones from the magpies and native thrushes. I preserve them all, even the parrots which eat the fruit. The smaller birds are so fearless that they have perched on my shoulder.

A pair of robins have built three years in succession in the verandah and have brought up three families in a most exemplary way. The magpies too, have brought their young people to the terrace in front of the house and taught them how to find grubs and insects in the turf. The tiny ring-eye is the greatest destroyer of our cherries and small fruits. He pierces all he can reach, and nothing makes him afraid. I suspended a most artistic imitation of a hawk over the orchard, which hovered and swooped with the wind most naturally, and some of the larger birds respect him and kept away, but the ring-eyes perched on his painted back and chirped in defiance and contempt."

The residence is after the old English style of architecture. The outlines are sufficiently varied and broken up to produce a pleasing effect without any seeming attempt at display. The brick basement rises to about 3ft. above ground. Over this is constructed a wooden framework on which are hung red tiles overlapping in the same fashion as tiles on a roof. This outside coat of armour forms an effectual protection from the drifting snows, rain and damp which prevail in this elevated region during the winter months.

Sir George, who has been his own architect, has shown scant courtesy to painters, plasterers and professional house decorators, the only material in their line allowed on the buildings at Alton Alton, Mount Macedon.

A great deal of thought, trouble and money have been bestowed on the drawing room and it is intended to show what can be done with the native woods of Australia when allowed to exhibit their natural effects of grain and colour. The room is 33 ft. long, 22ft. wide and 18ft. high, exclusive of a 12ft. by 8ft bay window. The floor is bordered with jarrah from Western Australia being allowed to appear around the oriental carpets which cover the rest of the floor.

The dado is framed of blackwood; the lower row of panels is of the root of the New Zealand kauri and the upper row is of the root of the totara, also from New Zealand.

The door is of solid blackwood having 12 panels of fiddle-back grain, so much admired in this timber. The ceiling is coved and divided into panels of narrow kauri battens, V jointed and arranged diagonally so as to produce a great variety of pattern in combination.

The effect of this mode of finishing the inside of the room is very satisfactory by day and by night.

Grants to boost sport facilities Minister for Sport John Eren joined Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas at the launch of the new multipurpose cricket training facility in Gisborne on January 18 to announce upgrades to sporting facilities.

Grants from the Community Sports Infrastructure Fund will go to ● Gisborne Tennis Club – $100,000 to upgrade two courts to synthetic clay and install court lighting; ● Gardiner Reserve – $100,000 to

upgrade the change rooms to create female-friendly facilities and umpire facilities.

Every player deserves equal access to equal facilities. The improvements will benefit everyone, especially women and girls.

“Women deserve the same opportunities as men, and with record numbers of women and girls signing up to play local sport, we’re making sure our facilities are up to scratch,” Mr Eren said.

HEALTH & WELLBEING MRH seeks memories of old hospital Macedon Ranges Health celebrates its 60th birthday in 2018. Since starting as the Gisborne Bush Nursing hospital in 1958, MRH has grown to become one of regional Victoria’s most comprehensive primary health and aged care services.

We will share this fantastic milestone with the community through a range of socially inclusive, accessible events in March and April. This will be a opportunity to recognise the wonderful contribution of the organisation’s founders, clients, residents, partners, volunteers, employees and supporters.

The birthday celebrations will also include the installation of some artwork and the production of a commemorative pictorial book celebrating MRH’s history and 60 years of service to the community.

Researching our history has been a priority for MRH. We know one lady who had 11 babies in the hospital – and there are plenty of stories we would love to document and include in the book.

Men's Shed starts happy new year Guess what we got for Christmas, a new jointer-planer! This was funded by a $2,600 grant from Macedon Ranges Shire Council as part of their 2017 Community Funding Scheme.

Young men complete Shed program Baillie Tatt, Kevin Weston and Camden Hazell are three young men who participated in the inaugural Young Shedmen program at the Gisborne Men’s Shed last year, as part of the local KidzFlip initiative.

At the Christmas breakup in December these young men were delighted to learn that their names were the first to be recorded on a newly crafted perpetual shield. KidzFlip has big plans for 2018.

Many forgetting about good sun protection

With Betty Doolan Well, Christmas is over until the end of this year. I had a beaut day at my son and his wife’s place (Gary and Maureen) – there were a lot of little people there. I planted myself in front of the Christmas tree thinking that I am out of everyone’s way. All was going well until the train that runs around the bottom of the tree was switched on. There was a mass movement of little people heading my way.

As I tried to get out of the way, I hadn’t noticed a small hand grasp the control of the wheelchair. As I looked down this little face looked up at me as I went (quite fast) across the room with someone calling out “Look out, Nana”. We all agreed that this was the second time this little fella had had a go at the wheelchair controls and I fear little Max is getting to like it.

Decorations were all around The Oaks – we had over 20 beautiful decorated trees. Everywhere you looked there was something beautiful. We had a Christmas party with Father Christmas visiting and on Christmas Day every resident received a lovely present.

Some residents and their families have Christmas dinner at The Oaks and from all accounts this was very good and everyone enjoyed it.

Big thanks to the chef and staff that make all these things happen.

Over the past few days I have been repotting in my garden and to my surprise a little brown frog jumped on my arm. The Shedmen have made tall pot plant stands for us and I have repotted five large pot plants but still have a long way to go.

With summer in full swing, a new report has been published showing that Australian adults are forgetting to cover up. Sixteen per cent of adult Victorians are getting sunburnt at the weekend each year according to the Cancer Council Australia.

Parents are rarely guilty of not being sun-smart with their children but all too often fail to look after themselves properly.

There are five recommended sun protection measures, updated from the old slip, slop, slap campaign.

Slip on protective clothes; Slap on a hat; Slop on sunscreen; Seek shade; and Slide on sunglasses.

Australia still has one of the highest

rates of skin cancer in the world with more than 90,000 skin cancers treated each year and 512 Victorians dying from these cancers in 2015.

When checking your own skin, find a room with good light and a full-length mirror and look for any changes in spots, blemishes, freckles and moles.

It is recommended you have a yearly consultation with your GP to ensure a thorough review.

As we all enjoy the outdoor activities available to us over summer, make sure you drink plenty of water and, most importantly, be sun-smart.

Gisborne Ramblers walking group Congratulations to Gisborne resident Carmel Clemson who was awarded an OAM in the Australia Day honours for service to the local community.

Carmel, a marriage and funeral celebrant, has been involved with community organisations including the Woodend Lifestyle Carmel Clemson, OAM Carers Support Group, the Gisborne Cemetery Trust, the Gisborne Christmas Festival Committee and Bullengarook Landcare.

And congratulations also to Russell Walker, who received an OAM for service to the Victorian community.

Russell is presently vice-president of Gisborne Lions Club. For 20 years, he was the Victorian assistant auditor-general, and was also appointed the Commissioner of the Victorian Commission of Audit.

Russell Walker OAM Wendy Hallinan who moved from Red Cliffs to Gisborne in recent months dropped into the GREAT Centre in December to say how much reading the Gazette had helped her and her husband Damien to settle into the district. They have joined the Macedon Ranges Badminton Club and the Gisborne SES. Apart from Gisborne’s cooler weather, the attraction of being closer to a new grandson was a major reason for the move.

Neighbours get together Christmas is a good time for street parties and get-togethers and this picture shows some of the neighbours in Wodalla Grove, New Gisborne.

The afternoon was organised by Jean and John Randles who live on the corner of Comic Court.

The nearby residents enjoyed getting together for a chat on a beautiful summer’s day just before Christmas.

Until recently when visiting her husband’s grave at the Gisborne Cemetery a lady had noticed a lack of seating for older visitors. She phoned the Cemetery Trust to ask if they could do something and to her surprise on her next visit new seating had been installed. She is very grateful to the Trust for responding so quickly.

The Ramblers are an informal group who meet for a weekly walk of between 5 and 9km, with a walking duration of 1.5 to 2 hours. If you would like to join us, we meet each Friday at Dixon Field, near the tennis courts, at 9.15am for a 9.30 start.

We are not a club, in that there are no membership fees, only a $1 coin donation at the beginning of the walk, which covers the cost of tea, coffee and biscuits provided at the conclusion. (Please bring own cup.)

Most walks start within a 15-minute car ride of Gisborne, although we also have walks scheduled out of Kyneton, Blackwood, Sunbury, Newham and Trentham this year.

Wear sturdy footwear (runners ok) and bring a hat, water bottle plus any personal requisites as required.

A hiking pole or walking stick is a useful extra. Please note we are NOT a membership club so no insurance is provided on these walks; you walk at your own risk and responsibility. We do not walk on fire ban declared days.

Decisions on days with heavy rain or thunderstorm activity will be made by the group on the day.

FOR THE RECORD Council has adopted a master plan for the development of the Gisborne Botanical Gardens.

The State Government has released a planning statement that proposes to shape the future growth of the Macedon Ranges. The statement has come in for some criticism and residents are urged to have their say about the plan by February 19. See the article on page 21 for more details.

Council has decided to apply to the federal Building Better Regions fund for $3.9m towards the development of the proposed New Gisborne Regional Sports Fields.

Council will also budget the same amount over the next three financial years for its equal share of the project.

The annual Picnic at Hanging Rock Classic Car Show is at Hanging Rock on February 11, 7.30am to 3.30pm.

More than 1000 classic cars, motor bikes and trucks are expected. Don’t miss it!

Each year the Gazette presents $50 each to two outstanding students selected by their respective schools, and we featured the 2017 award winners in the December issue. Unfortunately, notification of the winners from Bullengarook Specialist School was received too late for publication in December. However the two presentations were made at the school and here are Chloe and Jack’s belated citations.

New Gisborne's news reporters At the end of 2017 New Gisborne Primary School received an award honouring us for five years of contributing articles and photographs to the Gisborne Gazette. Thank you very much to the Gazette for recognising our hard work.

Before our articles are published in the newspaper, volunteer students draft news articles about interesting events that happen at our school throughout the year. We have reported on sporting and academic achievements, Tournament of Minds, camps, our Kitchen Garden Program and many other events.

Once written, the articles are edited

and “polished”. A photograph is then chosen to accompany the piece of writing. We send the article and photo to the Gazette editor and wait with bated breath to see our article in print in the actual newspaper. This process is a wonderful opportunity for budding journalists and photographers to gain experience in the newspaper world.

In 2018 we are again looking forward to reporting on more school events such as our upcoming Autumn Fair, our Positive Start Program and our new School Leaders. Be sure to look out for us in future editions of our favourite newspaper!

Jack Hubert, Yr 7 Jack has made a positive impact on the Bullengarook Campus in his first year with us. He is a member of the student leadership team and sets a great example with his behaviour both in class and in the yard. Jack respects the rights of others and happily assists other students who need help.

Jack gives 100% with any tasks that he is set and is a model student. A most deserving recipient of this award.

Chloe Farquhar, Yr 9 Chloe has been at Bullengarook for three years and consistently demonstrates all the attributes of a valuable member of the school community.

Chloe is the first one to offer to assist other students with their work or if they have any issues outside and always volunteers for any jobs that need to be done. Chloe is also an active member of her local community and attends singing and dancing activities outside of school. She is an amazing young lady.

It was great to see so many happy faces returning to school for another year of discovering and new adventures awaiting for 2018.

Staff spent many hours over the holidays setting up two new classrooms to accommodate the many new students recently enrolled in Grades 1 to 6. We welcome the new families and staff to the Gisborne Montessori community.

GSC students continue to rack up impressive achievements

I would like to start this month’s article with huge congratulations to the students and families of our class of 2017. Over 90% of our students who applied for courses through VTAC received a first-round offer. An article published in The Age on January 16 stated, “it was much harder to get into university this year” with the number of Year 12 school leavers increasing for the fourth consecutive year. So, very well done to the class of 2017!

There have been a number of changes within the TAFE and university sectors in recent years and 2018 will be no exception. My best advice for students, families and those planning to return to study is not to put your aspirations in the ‘too-hard basket’ but to seek information directly related to your circumstances. University and TAFE providers are more than happy to meet you individually to discuss your options. Knowing this should significantly reduce your anxiety and stress, giving you a clearer understanding of what lies ahead. Do keep in mind that it is important to record this information in writing so that you are not relying on memory alone.

Now if you find yourself at the beginning of a new year feeling a little lost as to what to do to make 2018 count, you’re not alone. Every year we set ourselves goals but what can we do to give ourselves the best chance of success?

Plan for success, take your time to set out small steps – realistic things you can do each day that lead you towards your goals. Visualise your plan: use a diary, an app, a whiteboard or even sticky notes to make sure you can see your success along the way.

This approach will keep you motivated.

Identify your supports. Think about the people around you who can help you to stay on track and with whom you can share your successes.

The work of two students from the Year 12 Systems Engineering class at Gisborne Secondary, Cameron Cornish and Michael Stein-Reeves, has been selected in the Cameron's colour sorter.

2018 VCE Top Designs exhibition.

Their works went through very tough and comprehensive judging criteria.

Cameron, a Year 12 student last year, made a fully functional M&M and Skittle colour sorting machine.

Michael, Michael with his Hexacopter. currently a Year 12 student, made an 800mm long-range self-designed and built Hexacopter with automatic landing option and first person view.

Top Designs, run by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, received more than 1,200 applications with just under 240 shortlisted. From these, seven Systems Engineering works have been selected for exhibition.

It is an outstanding recognition for Cameron and Michael, which will help them to professionally establish themselves in their university engineering studies.

GSC congratulates these two students on their achievement and also congratulates their engineering teacher, Mr Herceg, who spent the past four to five years teaching, mentoring and training these students.

Their work will be on display at the Melbourne Museum, Carlton, from March 16 until July 15, 10am5pm daily.

Venturers flew from across Australia and overseas to Brisbane and then travelled to Old Petrie Town, a restored historic village north of Brisbane, where they were split into their predetermined expedition groups.

The expeditions were vast in options from rafting to turtle conservation or just chilling and exploring what the city of Brisbane has to offer. Once we were in our exped groups we had an opening ceremony and then spent the next week doing our expeditions. We organised ourselves within our groups and voted on a chairman to help run the unit and a secretary to serve as a second in command. This was to make sure everyone grew as a kind of family and looked out for each other.

After the expedition phase we went to the YMCA camp “Warrawee” where we set up camp in unit groups. The second week was activity week where we went on off-site or on-site activities, depending on what we’d chosen. The offsite activities included lasertag, theatre, a beach day and many more while onsite activities included a chill-out zone, a pool, a Rover challenge shed and an escape room. Leon takes up the challenge 1st Gisborne Joey Scout Leon Lappin Efthymiou decided to organise a food drive for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre as part of his Promise Challenge badge. Leon encouraged students at Mount Macedon Primary School to donate non-perishable food items in term 4 last year. The small school donated approximately $300 worth of groceries and Leon delivered it to the ASRC in Footscray during the summer holidays.

The centre was so grateful as they support about 600 families who have little or no access to government support and rely on donations for their food and living necessities. Leon learnt all about the reasons asylum seekers flee their own countries to escape danger. Well done Leon! ◄ Leon delivers the items he collected to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

1st New Gisborne ready to plunge into new year's activities We start off this year on Tuesday night February 6 with Scouts then the next night, Wednesday 7, with Cub Scouts and Joeys.

On Thursday evening February 22 we will celebrate Scouting’s Founder’s Day with a barbecue and tree planting time at Noonameena Scout Camp near Kyneton.

Planning is under way for a number of camps and activities this year for each section.

Cubs and Scouts continue their interest in model rockets and look forward to

seeing some more of our own rockets launched at the Serpentine range near Bendigo.

Joeys (ages 5-7) and Cub Scouts (ages 7-10) meet on Wednesdays at 6.30 pm at the Gisborne Church of Christ, Saunders Road, New Gisborne. Joeys meet for just one hour and Cubs finish at 8pm. Hi everyone and welcome to 2018! Now that we’re all settled in to this New Year, here’s the next big thing to add to your calendar.

The annual Macedon CFA Flea Market is being held on Saturday February 24 at the grounds of the Macedon Fire Station. The auction starts at 11am. For those of you who haven’t been before, this is a fantastic day and well worth the effort to attend.

Up for grabs are some absolute bargains. My favourite coffee table was bought for a steal last year. It sits in pride of place at home having been lovingly refurbished. You’ll find furniture of all types available. Why not come down and find your own next project?

Maybe some of the “big boys' toys” will be just the thing. Many tools are up for grabs also. Just the thing for those DYIers among us.

My son has in the past come away with a box full of “treasures” including crystal from the brica-brac stall. He was very excited! My daughter is just as happy coming away with a bagful of books.

There will be hundreds to choose from for you book worms out there.

Again this year, Phil Wilkinson has quality restored bikes up for grabs. This is always a popular attraction and a great alternative to buying new.

Steve Graham will reign supreme as the auctioneer providing his own unique and humorous style of commentary. This alone is worth coming to hear.

Previous proceeds from this day have enabled our local CFA to buy their new truck – an amazing community effort! As a thank you to everyone out there, this year the CFA are providing the kids rides free of charge.

Obituary Robert Francis Rymer 9 March 1949 – 21 November 2017 Robert was born in Melbourne, the eldest of two children to parents Fred and Doss Rymer. His sister Maree was born two years later. Robert attended primary school at St Mary’s Ascot Vale and later secondary school at St Bernard’s, Essendon. On leaving school, Rob was Robert Rymer employed with Sun Alliance Insurance where he met Noelene in 1967 and on 30 July 1969 they married at St John’s Clifton Hill. Rob and Noelene moved to Gisborne that year, living in the bungalow at the back of the Telegraph Hotel. They went on to build in Keily Road in 1975 and lived there until 2008 and then moved to Fowler Court which is still their current home.

They had five daughters: Kylie, Amanda, Alicia, Paige and Tarryn.

Rob played football and cricket for Gisborne and was made a life member of the Gisborne Football/Netball Club. He was a penciller for a bookmaker at the Moonee Valley trots on Saturday nights. He also kept up night work at the Telegraph Hotel while working for Sun Alliance until 1972.

Tragedy struck the family when eldest daughter Kylie was killed in a car accident in 1988.

When the Telegraph Hotel was sold in 2000, Rob worked at the airport for ten years before retiring to spend time with family and grandchildren. Rob has eight grandchildren: Jarryd, Harry, Riley, Spencer, Emmy, Ruby, Lenny and Avery.

In his leisure time Rob enjoyed crosswords, sudoku, horse racing and music. A funeral service was held at Gardiner Reserve, Gisborne, on Wednesday 29 November 2017 followed by the burial at the Gisborne Cemetery.

Noelene and the family wish to express their sincere gratitude to their many friends for the support and condolences at the time of Rob’s passing.

Hanging Rock's secrets revealed The first comprehensive chronicle of Hanging Rock was recently released in a book, Hanging Rock – A History.

Written by noted historian Dr Chris McConville and published by the Friends of Hanging Rock, this book provides answers to many longstanding questions about the iconic landmark.

The Friends of Hanging Rock committee worked with Chris to draw together information collated over more than three years of research. Sifting through records in historical societies, archives, museums and libraries across the world, members discovered previously unknown material and records, including the earliest known painting of Hanging Rock from 1858, a watercolour by artist W H Burkitt.

The book was launched at the Newham Mechanics Institute on December 8 and is available for sale online and in bookstores.

Danza Hyatt sends another shot to the boundary in his 176 against Diggers Rest on January 20, which included 18 fours and seven sixes.

The Gisborne Cricket Club is excited to have West Indian International Danza Hyatt join us for the 201718 season. Danza played his first match for the club on January 21, making an immediate impact with an innings of 176.

Danza is a dynamic all-rounder – right hand bat and medium pace bowler.

Jamaican born, he made his One Day International debut for the West Indies against India in 2011.

Danza has also featured prominently in the International and Domestic T20 arena, where he has played alongside the likes of Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Vernon Philander and Jacques Rudolph.

Danza has joined the club not only as a player but also as an assistant coach. His focus will be directed on the club’s batting as well as working with junior coaches in the Under 17 training program.

The club is excited to have someone of Danza’s calibre join its ranks. There’s no doubt that his experience at the highest levels of the game will leave a positive mark on our performance and players alike.

Gisborne Junior cricketers feature in rep teams Central Highlands Under 18 Girls squad was led outstandingly by their captain Gisborne Cricket Club's Georgia Kerr in the Cricket Victoria Under 18 Female State Championships played in Melbourne in mid-December.

As well as Georgia, other Gisborne girls to make the team were Imogen Barlow, Kameka Barnes, Tanae Bannan and Georgia Paton. And Bridget Barlow was selected in the Under 16 team.

Not to be outdone, the boys also forced their way into rep teams with the U18s featuring four Gisborne players: Roby Lane (captain), Riley Vernon, Joel Garbutt and Sam McCaskill.

The Dragons are also represented in the U16 boys with Sam Mackay (captain) and Josh McDonald, and Spencer Jones made the U14 squad.

Lady golfers back after summer break The Gisborne Golf Club course is looking absolutely amazing. The greens and the fairways are pristine and it is the best time to be a golfer.

We finished off the 2017 season with a Christmas breakup lunch and a nine-hole competition. The ladies were all decked out in festive gear and we appreciated the golf buggy coming to visit each group offering refreshments

of the bubbly kind with a touch of orange juice thrown in.

Some said this made them play better!

The lunch afterwards was lovely and it was nice to see some of the previous members come and join us in these festivities. A secret Santa was also lots of fun.

The ladies had a break over the Christmas and New Year period, but were back into it on January 9 with the first monthly medal awarded to Ann Bainbridge-Robb.

The Gisborne Bushwalking Club celebrated the end of 2017 with a forest walk and luncheon organised by members Brian Smith and Shirley Forsythe. They were supported by a colourful team who provided a comprehensive morning tea during the walk with home-made seasonal food and a full range of refreshments.

The activities for the first half of 2018 include 20 half-day and one-day walks plus two weekend-away walking trips, staying in cabin accommodation. Once again, club members have excelled in offering some new and interesting activities.

After a successful trial in 2017, the Walking Club and Parks Victoria have formalised a “Friends of Macedon Regional Park” partnership and our club members will initially undertake trail audits in the park on a monthly basis. This activity will combine a pleasant half-day walk with inspection and reporting on trail conditions to assist Parks Victoria with its park management.

Swimmers new season under way It was a busy end to 2017 for two of our elite and competitive Gisborne Thunders swimmers, Tyler Theodore and Darcy Smith, who qualified and competed at the Victorian Age Championships.

This premier event was conducted at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre from December 10 to 15 and both swimmers competed in six events each and achieved personal best times.

Great achievement for Gisborne Mixed Martial Arts Five competitors travelled to Sydney in early December for the national titles. Much experience was gained by all competitors with over 400 martial artists competing over a two-day weekend. Fishing the Goulburn and tributaries With great anticipation, five members of the Calder Fly Fishing Association headed up to the Goulburn River and a couple of its tributaries in search of catching the elusive trout in late November.

We followed the strategy to fly fish the beautiful Rubicon River on the Saturday morning to midday, the mighty Goulburn River for the Saturday dusk rise, and the sweet Steavenson River near Buxton on the Sunday morning.

We were fortunate to have Mark Hobbs in our group who has represented Australia in numerous fly fishing events internationally and he provided a deep well of advice, wisdom and tips throughout the weekend. Most fish were caught on nymphs which is a sub-surface fly that imitates a juvenile stage of an aquatic bug.

Trout were caught from all of the beautiful places that we fished, including a rare Brook trout from the Rubicon River. Some trout were caught (and all released without harm) and some were lost in the battle but… the landscapes of the Goulburn River, pools and riffles of the Rubicon and Steavenson and camaraderie were the eventual winners.

Being relatively new to fly fishing, I recommend anybody who has a sniff of interest in this intriguing pasttime to consider the Calder Fly Fishing Association.

Gisborne Soccer Club has received funding of $7,015 to assist with much needed improvements to club-room facilities.

Announcing the grant, the Member for McEwen, Rob Mitchell, said “This funding, matched by in-kind donations and funds raised by the GSC, will allow the club to create an inclusive space for parents, friends and players to participate more fully in club life.”

With an enclosed outdoor space, an indoor lounge and very welcome laundry facilities, the upgrade would make a big difference.

Mr Mitchell said local organisations such as sports clubs or incorporated not-for-profit organisations could apply for grants from $5,000 to $20,000 under the Stronger Communities Program, as long as they matched it on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

“I invite applicants to contact my office on 9333 0440,” he said.

Wednesday evening orienteering The Wednesday evening orienteering series resumed on January 30. Four events will be held in three towns – Sunbury, Woodend and the finale at Gisborne on February 21.

Macedon Ranges Croquet Club into second half of season Our lovely Christmas lunch at Galli winery set the scene for the Christmas break and now here we are again starting the second half of our season. There are a busy few months ahead as our club championship matches begin the first week of February. So watch the noticeboard and check the draw.

The final is scheduled for the first week in March.

This will be closely followed by our next social day, the Easter raffle and finally another inhouse fun day. The greens look magnificent and are so welcoming to all players. Thank you Craig for doing an amazing job; the club is so lucky to have you as green keeper.

One of our members, Margaret Margaret Wardell Woolcock, has compiled the history of the club 1992-2017.

Margaret read the minutes and talked to original members and has given us a comprehensive and insightful look at our first 25 years. Congratulations and thank you Margaret.

Macedon Bowling Club: Woodend v Macedon, 2nd division

Thrill for local kids at Australian Open

Woodend travelled to the beautiful Macedon Bowling club on January 27with a strong team and an expectation of another win. However 40mm of overnight rain resulted in a slow green, and the hot oppressive weather proved too much for the Woodend Warriors.

Norm Bichedyke’s team jumped out to an early 15/1 lead but was gradually overtaken for a 22/24 finish.

Thanks to the inclusion of the talented Norm Hughes and Scott Gillman, Team Hobbs finally had a big win 41/16.

Skipping for the first time this season Darryl Ryan and Co waltzed their way to a 32/17 win in spite of spirited opposition from veteran Clarrie Brett.

Both team are vying for a final’s berth.

The Stadium in Gisborne has a Thursday morning basketball competition with games played from 9.30am.

New and experienced players are welcome. Register as an individual or as a team—a number of teams are seeking extra players and new teams are always welcome.

Women’s day and night netball competitions are available at Buffalo Stadium in Woodend. The Monday morning netball competition games are played from 9am. Tuesday night netball games begin at 7.10pm.

Ten students from Chapman Tennis Coaching at Gisborne Tennis Club enjoyed the “Kids on Court” day at the Australian Open on January 17.

This annual event is hosted by the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Program and inspires students to continue with tennis by involving them in play on the same courts used by the pros. A student on each court is chosen to toss the coin for the first match of the day on their court – what an exciting possibility!

QUICKA Bowls coming to Gisborne The Central Highlands Bowls District, in association with Bowls Victoria, will present an opportunity for interested persons and local companies to hear and discuss the exciting new concept of QUICKA Bowls at the Gisborne Bowling Club on Sunday March 11 at 11am. A presentation will be made by Bowls Victoria Director John Inglese and a barbecue lunch will be provided.

It provides a wonderful opportunity for all bowlers – barefoot or experienced – to enjoy a funfilled day on the green.

Firstly, to Foodworks for their generosity in allowing us to place our grocery donation box in the foyer of the shop, to assist those doing it tough at Christmas. Thank you also to all the generous customers who placed goods in the box, making it all so worthwhile.

Thankyou to Richard from Bakers Delight who kindly donated bread for our free barbecue on December 15. We held a sausage sizzle in Brantome Street in front of the church to hand out free barbecued sausages to passers-by. It went well and a number of church members enjoyed it too, sitting in the late afternoon shade of a big tree.

The idea of a free barbecue came from the Friends Group as a goodwill gesture to the community and was organised by Ron Hebbard. It was appreciated. The snags were yummy, combined with fried onions and tomato sauce.

Finally, our pile of knitted poppies at Church is growing ever bigger. Thank you to all in the community who have joined us in this venture. There is still

time and a need to knit more so if you want to know about this, just ring Maree on 5428 3852. She will gladly fill you in on the details.

We will be flipping pancakes on Saturday February 10 outside the IGA supermarket in the Village Shopping Centre, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. All donations will go towards Uniting Care’s program supporting people living in crisis.

HOUSE OF THE ROCK We’ve started 2018 with a bang at the House of the Rock Church. We are awaiting the arrival home of “Team India”, as four of our congregation have been on a mission trip to India for three weeks, teaching, ministering and caring for hundreds of children and adults throughout many of the poorer regions of this great and awe-inspiring country.

St Paul's Op Shop Jottings St Paul’s Op Shop reopened on Tuesday January 30 after a four-week ChristmasNew Year break. All of our volunteers in the shop and sorting shed welcomed the break and are looking forward to the coming year.

The Almighty Book and Bric-a-brac Sale on Saturday January 20 was very successful and many bargains were snapped up soon after the door was opened.

We raised $1,700 which will be donated to the Gisborne Secondary Col-

lege Chaplaincy fund.

FEBRUARY 1918 The Return of the Blackfish Mr Walter Smith of Riddell has contributed to “Nature’s Notes” in "The Argus” of the 25th ult. There are many in this district who no doubt will agree with what is said, which is as follows: Since the opening of the season for blackfish, nearly all of our residents and those of the surrounding district who are interested in fishing note with great pleasure that many of the streams are again becoming stocked with this splendid fish, and that the English trout are becoming scarce. Most people are agreed that it was a mistake to introduce the latter fish into such streams as the Bolinda, Emu, Jackson and Deep Creek. A few “sports” content to devote a whole day to capture one or two trout may question it being a mistake but most people, especially those who fished these streams in the days of old, welcome back the good old blackfish.

Win the War “Economy” – AuditorGeneral’s Scathing Report. It is more often the exception than the rule that documents issued from Gov. Depts. merit passing notice, but the annual report of the Commonwealth Auditor-General for the financial year ending June 30th, 1917, is such as to justify wide publicity and comment, as indicating the shameful and scandalous manner in which public moneys are squandered in many Commonwealth departments at a time when all and sundry are urged by the “Win-theWar” Ministers to “economise and invest their savings in the war loans.” After referring in general terms to transactions of the previous 12 months, the AuditorGeneral refers in pointed terms to some of the more glaring “irregularities.” As was to be expected, the chief defaulter is the department responsible for the ministration of Australia’s war policy. It is a serious reflection, not only on the department but also on the political head administering it, that pay sheets amounting to £117,389 should remain unaccounted for in the various States.

The “Southern Lights” (Aurora Australis) were plainly visible in Gisborne on Tuesday night. The colouring was nearly so brilliant as on the occasion a few months back, the sky being of a dull red colour with alternate bands or streamers of white. The display, which commenced about 8.45, continued for an hour.

Gisborne Singers 'Creation' REVIEW: On November 26, the Gisborne Singers performed Haydn’s oratorio, The Creation, text taken from the Book of Genesis, with passages from the Psalms and John Milton. To tell the story semi-operatically underlines the view of the story as mythological, not literal. Yet for all the contention between Creationists and Evolutionists, Genesis is perhaps the earliest account of evolutionary theory.

With The Creation music and text both challenge our deepest principles. Haydn’s representation of the time before Creation is not what modern minds might expect….no rattling of countless, mindless atoms…

Haydn’s Chaos is filled with yearning, desire, intent, and aloneness. When light bursts forth it is from the burden of an agony no longer sustainable. There is no alternative but radiant joy. Choir, orchestra and soloists, under the baton of Stephen Brockman, rendered this transition to perfection, highlighted by special moments of yearning from violas, violoncelli and clarinet.

The orchestra was wonderfully fluid in expressing undulations of hills and mountains, flowing of the limpid brook, songs of birds and the tenderness of first love found by Adam and Eve, hand in hand in their wondrous garden.

Manfred Pohlenz sang with depth, warmth and authority as the Archangel Raphael and as Adam. Christopher Roache brought a lovely lyrical flavour to Uriel, and Cristina Russo reawakened the meaning of the word coloratura; the colours she brought to seemingly effortless florid passages were enchanting. So was everything else. None of those named could achieve what they did without the commitment and support of all the performers. Everyone did their bit; there were no weak links. And where would the performance have been without the climactic moments from the chorus, showing complete mastery of intricate fugues as well as subtle moments of spine-tingling delicacy? I cannot mention everybody. It was all wonderful!
