Teachers shine at Shepparton Games The Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School community is very proud of our group of 32 staff who attended the teachers’ games in Shepparton during the school holidays. We are happy to report that we,
"The Smurfs", brought back a swag of 25 medals after participating in 14 different sports over four days
of competition. We were also lucky enough to receive the ultimate award of the Minister's Cup, given to the school that best demonstrates the
'Smurfs' win u ltimate trophy
spirit in which the games are intended: sportsmanship, collegiality and teamwork. Congratulations to all those who attended and represented the school so impressively. Bring on next year! Gary Heald

Kids Corner FROM the Editor’s Desk with Bryan Power
Packed with good news The Gazette is always looking to bring you the good news about our local youngsters but this edition is particularly full of reports about successes ranging over music, tennis, netball, cricket – even skipping! And the degree of involvement of young people in the recent Colour Run was outstanding. Congratulations to them all!

On October 10 Gazette committee members attended the annual conference of the Community Newsletters Association of Victoria and at the awards dinner that night the Gisborne Gazette came away with two major awards:
Advertising Coordinator John Chambers 0401 810 581 advertising@gisbornegazette.org.au Production Pip Butler 5428 2201 pbutlerhistory@gmail.com Graeme Millar, Elaine Millar
Best Community Content Winner GREAT Gisborne Gazette Judge’s citation: “The GREAT Gisborne Gazette is packed with articles of community interest and information. The Editorial highlights the building of new community facilities and points to key articles of community interest. The Gazette contains articles from no fewer than nineteen community groups, emphasising the broad range of community groups and contributions to the newsletter. The breadth of involvement shows a very high level of engagement in the community. Article writers are named and have their photos attached. The newsletter has something of interest to everyone in the community.” Best Design and Layout Joint Finalists, GREAT Gisborne Gazette and Waranga News Judge’s citation: “This compact monthly journal [the Gazette] maximises content with cleverly designed layouts incorporating an abundance of sharply cropped pictures and attractive use of colour.” We are delighted with these awards. The first award has been earned because of all those many voluntary contributors who bring us the good news about their clubs and organisations in every edition. The award mentions “no fewer than nineteen community groups”. In fact I counted more than 90 community-generated articles (and this was in the edition submitted by us – the July Gazette – edited in my absence by the dynamic Corinne Shaddock). The second award recognises the wonderful work that Pip Butler does every month in putting together all the copy and photos that flood in for each edition. Pip’s creative flair and her determination to produce the best-looking paper never flags. And with it all she is such a joy to work with: nothing is a problem. Thank you Pip. And thanks too to John Chambers for all his excellent work in producing attractive ads. Public Holidays Have a look at the 100 Years Ago on page 35 to put the recent controversy about the Grand Final eve holiday in perspective. There you will see that Victorians enjoyed considerably more public holidays in 1915 than we do today.

We were really hit with a taste of the hot weather to come last month with temperatures soaring to record heights and an out of control fire at Lancefield. It is a timely reminder for all residents to ensure their bushfire safety plans are in order and that they have prepared their property accordingly. Speak to your local CFA about this if you are unsure or visit the council website which has detailed information regarding emergencies and safety – it is a really useful tool for residents. Please make sure you know where your local ‘Place of Last Resort’ is situated as part of your fire plan in case you decide to stay. These designated areas are in Lancefield, Macedon, Riddells Creek and Woodend and further details are listed on the council website at www.mrsc.vic.gov.au With the impending hot weather also comes the risk of sunburn. It is really important that as a community, we encourage everyone to Slip, Slop Slap (remember the old ‘Life be In It’ campaign – slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat?). I recently had a diagnosed melanoma cut off my arm which fortunately was caught early and was a big wake up call. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer but the easiest to cure if caught early. The message is to continue being sun smart and a sun smart role model; check yourself and your family for changes in moles and skin patterns and be vigilant. The new regional netball complex in Gisborne is looking fantastic. The clubrooms are now complete and it is a huge benefit for Gisborne and the surrounding areas with more netball being played than ever before. The same can be said for the Stadium – indoor soccer, basketball, netball and even Metafit are taking advantage of this space which is a huge win for our active and healthy lifestyle. With the Early Years Hub in Gisborne soon to completed, and the Rural Living Zone Review earmarked to open up some more rural parcels of land in the outskirts of Gisborne, the town is alive and thriving. The government will also upgrade the Calder Freeway on and off ramps on Station Road early in the new year so we will really be a town ‘under construction’, balancing new infrastructure with our natural environment. Please keep safe, wear your hats, and most of all, enjoy this beautiful weather.
Where to pick up the Gazette If you do not receive the Gazette in your letter box, you can collect a copy at: Mt Macedon: The Trading Post. Macedon: Post Office, IGA store and the service station on Black Forest Drive. Gisborne: Village Shopping Centre, Gisborne Library, Foodworks supermarket, Caltex Service Station,
Coles supermarket and the GREAT Centre, Hamilton Street. New Gisborne: Baringo Food and Wine Co in Station Road, and the cafe in the Industrial Estate. Riddells Creek: Neighbourhood House. Woodend: Information Centre and Library. Sunbury: Information Centre and Library.
Wake up call as fire season arrives early
Budburst has a new name Macedon Ranges winegrowers are celebrating 25 years of the Budburst Festival in November with a new name and a new look. Everyone is invited to the Macedon Ranges Wine and Food Festival on November 14-15. This year 16 venues will host 30 wineries. There will be more than Ma c e d o n 100 wines for Ranges W i n e s tasting, some that can only be sourced at the cellar door. Delicious food will be paired with the wines on offer. Expect to see special guests and, as always, local chefs from some of the region’s best restaurants will be holding celebration dinners. The Festival will be the perfect opportunity to take a deep breath and enjoy the gentle art of wine sampling. Book your Weekend Wineries Pass for just $15, which includes a commemorative tasting glass. For full program and bookings visit www.budburst.com The Festival has organised buses (leaving from Gisborne, Woodend and Kyneton railway stations) to take people around to various venues over the weekend. Book a seat on one of the buses for $35 for a full day of touring. The itineraries are listed at www.trybooking. com/HQOJ
The recent Cobaw-Lancefield fire was a warning to all of us that this summer is going to be a particularly dangerous one and we must develop our own family fire plan that caters for all eventualities and ensure that each member of our family knows exactly what she or he has to do. The local CFA will be able to give good advice (a good time is Sunday morning when the volunteers gather at their brigade stations); there is plenty of literature available and you can go to the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au to find a wealth of information. You can also, through the website, download the CFA fire-ready app. Each of our local brigades – Bullengarook, Macedon, Mount Macedon, Riddells Creek and Gisborne – made huge commitments to fighting the Cobaw-Lancefield fires. (Gisborne, for example, contributed 70 12-hour shifts.) If we can assist their efforts by ensuring that our properties are as well prepared as possible, they will be grateful.
Fun Run at Bullengarook Reserve We are the Year 11 VCAL class from Sunbury Macedon Ranges Specialist School at the Bullengarook Secondary Campus. On Tuesday November 17 our class will be in charge of organising a Fun Run at the local reserve to raise money for the Bullengarook CFA. Students will be asked to run laps and seek sponsorship from home in order to collect money for this event. There will also be a sausage sizzle on the day to raise money. Locals are welcome to turn up and support the students and make a donation to this cause. We will be starting at 11.30am. Garry Heald

Koalas on Couangalt Road
Macedon Ranges U3A We have speakers on diverse topics each week, but on November 2 and 9 there will be a subject of great interest – an exploration of Greek drama. For those seniors who would like to join us, we meet at the Senior Citizens rooms in Hamilton Street, Gisborne on Mondays from 10.30am and you will be made welcome.
South Gisborne resident Helen Evans saw this mother koala and baby in Couangalt Road, South Gisborne, recently, and snapped this picture with her mobile phone.

Who Am I Who (or What) am I? I have a tail, four legs and I can be your best friend. I can have apples and pastry. I have tinfoil around me and I can have cream put on me. I’m green and soft and you can sit on me at a picnic.
Here are the happy cut and paste crew at Bullengarook Specialist School: Nathan, Dylan, Samantha, Jordan, Anthony, Liam (standing) Lukas and Rachel. They also provided the ‘Who am I’ riddles.
Congratulations to Aidan Vaughan, winner of the 2015 NSW Tennis State Championship during the September school holidays. Aidan played great tennis throughout the tournament, overcoming Australia’s number 1 seed in the 12 and under age group in the semi-finals to win the Championship in a three-set nail biter (46, 6-2 and 10-6 in the third set tie breaker). Aidan attends Braemar College and has been playing tennis since he was three. Aidan and his doubles partner from Queensland, were also runners up in the doubles.

November's Young Achiever is Rachel Chandler Tyndall, a student at Bullengarook Specialist School Senior Campus. Rachel did an outstanding job in the role of Mrs Darbus in our recent school production of High School Musical. She has a great sense of humour and has fitted in extremely well at the Secondary campus. It has been great to see Rachel mature this year into a young lady we can all be proud of. ■ Police warn that unlocked sheds have become a target for thieves recently.
■ Crime figures released in late September show that the Macedon Ranges had a 13.6% increase in offences, up from 1989 last year to 2259 in 2014-15.
Make a note for next month to get along to see classic, vintage and antique vehicles of all types and sizes when the Rotary Club presents Shannons Motorcycle and Car Show at New Gisborne. The day will feature various models of Indians, Harley Davidsons, Royal Enfields, Nortons, Triumphs, Scooters and Quad bikes plus classic cars and trucks. There will be fun for the kids with slow bike races, wheelbarrow races and an animal farm – with lots of prizes to be won on the day, plus food and drinks for all ages. This is a Rotary Club fundraising event for the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group. Sunday December 6, 10am-3pm, Steam Park, Webb Crescent, New Gisborne. There will be Indians old and new at the show.
Imagining Our Future: what will Macedon Ranges be like in 2030 With predictions that the population of the Macedon Ranges Shire will more than double in the next 15 years, debate is raging among residents around how we plan for and control future development. Michael Buxton, Professor of Environment and Planning at RMIT, has been invited to a forum of local residents to discuss Michael Buxton these issues. Professor Buxton heads a team carrying out extensive research into urban fringe areas in Australia. His study will identify future patterns of socio-economic and environmental change. As part of this study, he and his team will develop scenarios for future land use and management based on ‘business as usual’, interventionist and deregulated models. This is an initiative of the Macedon Ranges Branch of the ALP. All residents are invited to attend a light lunch followed by the forum on Sunday November 8 at 12 noon, at Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre, 8A Hamilton St, Gisborne. A donation of $35 is sought to cover the costs of the main course, dessert and a glass of wine. Bookings can be made via http://bit.ly/1Q9Z8kN All welcome.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Proudly sponsored by the Rotary Club of Gisborne
Ceremony held to honour Dennis Long Dennis Long was formally remembered on Saturday October 10 at the Mount View Theatre, Macedon. In a brief ceremony that was at once dignified and light-hearted, Meredith Long planted a tree and a memorial plaque was unveiled. The inscription on the plaque reads, “In memory of Dennis Long / Life Member of The Mount Players / and a great bloke / Memorial tree planted by Meredith Long, 10 October 2015”. A Family Benefit night followed at the Jubilee Hall, at which Dennis was honoured posthumously with a certificate from the Bullengarook CFA marking his 38 years of service, and with a “Local Hero” award from the Gisborne Community Carols Committee, sponsored by the Gisborne & District Community Bank branch of the Bendigo Bank. Writer and school principal John Marsden addressed the gathering on the subject of the stories that make each of us unique. There was also an auction conducted by Steve Graham, a silent auction, a raffle, dinner by Siggy Thiner, and a party that went moderately late into the night. The celebrations were greatly aided by the band Shaun Evans and the Soulistics, and by the

For the first time in more than 30 years of hosting overseas exchange students, Gisborne Rotary Club has taken in a student from Spain. Marina Pomares arrived in July from her home city of Alicante on Rotary International’s Long-Term Exchange Program. She will spend a year here immersed in our culture, attending school at Braemar College and living with families arranged through the local Rotary Club. Marina, who is 16, spoke at one of our club meetings recently where she showed photos of Spain, her home city and family life; impressing our members with the improvement in her English language in just a few weeks. In most years our club either receives or sends a student on overseas exchange. For those lucky enough Spanish exchange to have the opportunity, student Marina Pomares. it’s an amazing, lifechanging experience they’ll never forget. For the next round of overseas placements in 2017, students must not be older than 17 years and 8 months as at January 1, 2017, and not have completed Year 12. They are also expected to return to school after the exchange. If interested, please contact Gisborne Rotary on 5428 4483 or via our website www.gisbornerotary.org.au. Barry Wills

Park upgrade committee, bank, and Lions Club representatives celebrate Gisborne Community Bank branch’s grant for a double flying fox in Riddells Creek.
AGM held among busy time at Macedon CWA Ann Fyfield was again elected president of Macedon CWA at the AGM last month. Jan Ham is treasurer and Lorraine Tweddle has taken over as secretary. We thank Faye Armstrong for her many years of service as secretary. We are looking forward to another great year ahead. CWA provided a few pamper packs for people affected by the Lancefield fires. These are a small way we can support the great work of the CFA, SES, Red Cross, Council of Churches and many other volunteer groups that help after disasters. Hopefully there are no more fires during the long hot sumAnn Fyfield: re-elected as mer ahead. president. Members working at the CWA Rooms at the Royal Melbourne Show again had a great time, making tray after tray of scones, preparing lunches and, of course, washing dishes! As usual, the famous CWA rooms were flat out all day every day from breakfast to dinner. The CWA room profits at the Show are a major fundraiser for the State CWA headquarters. Any ladies interested in learning more about CWA are welcome at our next meeting on Tuesday November 17 at the CWA Hall in Mount Macedon Road. Lorraine Tweddle, 5426 2045
Kids and the young at heart will soon be able to have flying fox races in Riddells Creek. The Riddells Creek Park Upgrade committee is thrilled to announce a $20,000 grant from Gisborne & District Community Bank® branch of Bendigo Bank which will make the dream of a double flying fox in Riddells Creek a reality. The committee has worked over two years to develop concept plans and seek funding for an upgrade to Lions Memorial Park. Community support both financial and in-kind has allowed the project to develop, but sufficient funding to buy major equipment has not been secured until now. Committee member Narelle McGellin was over the moon about the grant. “Our little village is growing fast, and the community desperately need a fun and revitalised play
Gisborne CWA is about to sizzle Gisborne CWA held our AGM on October 12 with our office bearers remaining the same. Chris Edwards has been appointed as Archival Officer. The recipient of our special effort for 2015 will be Windarring. Our International Officer gave us a report on Cambodia, our 2015 country of study. Members are collecting toiletries to hand out to fire victims over the summer. Hopefully these will not need to be used. Our ladies have been making poppies for the Maldon Cemetery Trust; they are making a cross to be covered in poppies for Remembrance Day on November 11. Our branch will run a sausage sizzle at Sunbury Bunnings on November 21 with proceeds going towards our local community groups. Come along and
show your support. Gisborne CWA meetings are held on the second Monday of the month at the Masonic Hall. Bank funds super sound system for college The excitement level is rising as works to convert Gisborne Secondary College’s old gymnasium into a performing arts centre for music, dance and drama as well as a 300-seat theatre near completion. A major project, the conversion has included refurbishing the existing gym flooring into a substantial stage space, adding a full curtain rig and lighting bars, and installing raked theatre seating, a biobox and a sound system. Thanks to a $35,000 grant from Gisborne & District Community Bank® branch of Bendigo Bank, a fully professional sound system will now be installed in the centre – far superior to the one originally planned for this stage. Without the bank support, the school would have been able to afford little more than cabling and amplifiers at this point. The branch chose to invest in a high quality sound system as this feature will directly benefit students and enhance the useability of the centre for the school and outside user groups. Principal Andrew Robertson was most thankful for the bank’s support. “The Community Bank® grant has made possible a quality of sound system we only dreamed of getting well into the future. Having it installed and ready to go as soon as the centre opens means students and the community will be able to explore, create, and benefit from high quality sound straight away, which is extremely exciting,” he said. The $35,000 grant is the largest non-government contribution to the performing arts centre and the largest standalone grant extended by the Community Bank® branch since opening in 2008. Bank director Graham Stewart said the branch was

Stopping family violence is responsibility of all The Federal Government and various agencies will highlight the need for social action against domestic and family violence through the White Ribbon campaign on November 25 – White Ribbon Day. Madeleine Forms of violence include emoBaldissera tional, psychological, physical, sexual, social isolation, economic (financial deprivation/control), spiritual, loss of liberty, stalking and damage to property. Domestic and family violence is not the fault of the victim/survivor. It is a crime and unacceptable in any community. It has no age/social/gender boundaries and occurs in all socio-economic groups and cultures. It is a violation of a person’s human rights. Madeleine Baldissera

Hope for mesothelioma sufferers? Last year we published a story about local resident Louise Williams who has mesothelioma, a very aggressive, brutal and painful cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Although a long-term survivor (in her 12th year now) Louise's body was shutting down earlier this year and her weight dropped to 42 kilos. She was on morphine for chronic pain and her oncologist was saying that there was nothing else he could do for her and that death was only a matter of time. Around Easter Louise’s oncologist offered her a possible lifeline – the drug Lou Williams of Barringo receives Keytruda that is on a Keytruda treatment. the PBS only for melanoma but has had successful trials worldwide for 29 rare cancers including pleural mesothelioma. Keytruda is an immunotherapy drug that targets the immune system to fight the cancers. Louise has now been on Keytruda for seven months and says the drug has “brought me back to life”. Louise has gained weight, no longer needs blood transfusions, her pain medication has been decreased and she is no longer suffering nausea. She is campaigning for Keytruda to be placed on the PBS for mesothelioma sufferers. Kids Corner
HEALTH AND WELLBEING Proudly sponsored by Macedon Ranges Health
‘Betty’s Boop’ with Betty Doolan
Excitement was high at Gisborne Oaks with residents trying to pick the winner of the football grand final. There was great support for Hawthorn. Residents were invited to the well-decorated LEP (Life Enhancement Program) room where a big TV was on and the best was to come (well, I thought so) – food! Sandwiches, pies, cocktail frankfurts and a lot of different finger food. It was a beaut day and on top of that Hawthorn won. I mentioned last month a book I have been trying to find for 20 years. The book is about a town in NSW where my family “Leighton” settled. The lovely lady at the library found that I could get a loan (too expensive to buy) from two Melbourne universities. I decided to write to the publishers and imagine my surprise when I received a copy of the book with their compliments. It is incredible what these pioneers did apart from attending to the land. They formed cricket clubs and had picnics when all the surrounding towns would join them (I haven’t found anyone playing football). Halloween was a quiet affair here with most of our skeletons left in the cupboard. As I write we're planning for the Melbourne Cup when all the ladies make hats for our fashion parade and everyone tries to pick a winner. I decided that I would do my Christmas shopping early. I have completely confused myself – I forgot who was who, size, colour and everything else that goes with buying clothes and toys for young great-grandchildren. I went into the shop where everything is so different from my day. It took some time for me to realise that each time we walked past a toy dog, it barked. We were pressing buttons all over the place: birds whistled, dolls cried, and I never want to hear “Thomas the Tank” talk again. Our memorial service is a wonderful tribute to friends that have departed this life. Stay safe Betty
Spring clean to reduce asthma, allergy triggers at home With warmer weather just around the corner, now’s the time to think about spring cleaning. If you are one of the two million Australians with asthma, this is an especially important time of the year. With more than eight in 10 people suffering from asthma also being affected by allergies, a clean and healthy en-
vironment is an important part of reducing asthma and allergy triggers. Some handy spring-cleaning tips that may help include: get rid of old clutter where dust can build up; dust forgotten surfaces; vacuum thoroughly; remove dust mites from bedding (covering the mattress and pillows in protectors will stop the transfer of dust mite); clean
Podiatrist excellence award winner
Open Day: Healthy Living Expo at Health Centre
Karin Fiedler Karin is a podiatrist who works across the Primary Health and Residential Aged Care divisions. Her award in September resulted from a nomination lodged by a member of the Gisborne Oaks nursing team. The staff excellence award nomination said in part: “Karin is a thorough and holistic podiatrist, whom I feel upholds the values of Macedon Ranges Health. As part of my postgraduate study, Karin has allowed me to shadow her during one of her shifts at the Oaks, which allowed me to gain a more complete insight into foot assessment, in particular diabetic foot assessment. She has also shared her knowledge on various occasions which has helped me enormously not only in my studies, but also my practice as a nurse at the Oaks. "Karin’s rapport with the residents, and the way she positively communicates with them is something that all

Arthritis Support Group for Ranges
Shedmen Gunther and our two Terrys with the model of the amphitheatre.
Back to business as usual at the Shed Our Shed is no longer as neat and tidy as it was for the grand opening. We are now fully back in business which means there are bits of wood and metal in various stages of development on benches, sawdust on the floor, intermittent noise from various machines and continuous noise from Shedmen. Along with a backlog of old projects, we’ve already received many new requests from the community, some of which you’ll read about in future columns. One of the more interesting projects of late has been a request from the GREAT Association to build a model for a proposed amphitheatre project, which is still in its infancy. The site was surveyed by Terry M (right) and after a bit of design input from Gunther (left), Terry R (centre) built the model which will be used to develop the concept and explain the project to all and sundry. Yet another facet of what can happen in our Shed. Why not drop in and check out what we’re up to. The jug is never far off the boil any Monday, Wednesday or Thursday morning. You might even get a biscuit! – Ken Reiter

Arthritis affects nearly one in every five Australians. Often seen as a normal part of ageing, two of every three people with arthritis are aged between 15 and 60 years. While there is no cure for arthritis, there is help locally in the newly formed Macedon Ranges Arthritis Peer Support Group. The group meets from 1.30 to 3.30pm on the first Monday of the month at the Woodend Neighbourhood House, 47 Forest Street, Woodend.
Peer support groups provide social connections with people who understand a little of what you are going through, the opportunity to develop longlasting friendships and, importantly, the chance to have a laugh. You can also tap into local knowledge about services and health providers available. For more information, phone Susan on 0411 116 711 or email susanc23@ bigpond.com or phone Rita on 5427 2483.
Birds of the Macedon Ranges 20

Call for Mental Health volunteers PS My Family Matters is looking for local people to join its volunteer group, offering peer support to those who are caring for a loved one with a mental illness. "Since we formed PS My Family Matters 18 months ago we have seen an increasing demand for peer support services," said Tamara Wilson, president of PSMFM. "Our feedback consistently indicates that carers value the oneon-one interaction with someone who understands what they are going through and can offer support and advice." PSMFM is looking for people who live in (or near) the Macedon Ranges, and have lived experience of mental illness, either as a patient or as a carer. Access to a car would be helpful. "Volunteers will receive comprehensive training in mental health first aid and will be supported through our governance and oversight policies. This is a chance to join a team who are truly making a difference to the lives of many in our community. If you can spare a few hours a week, we would love to hear form you." For further information and to register interest please call 0475 269 965. Please don’t pat pooch Shelley Whyte is a vision impaired Gisborne resident who is able to get about with the assistance of her Golden Retriever, Evan. It is very important that Evan is able to focus on his job of navigating Shelley and keeping her safe so she is asking people not to talk to him or pat him, difficult as that may be, as he is a very attractive dog. So, if you see Shelley approaching with Evan in his harness, say hello to Shelley, not to Evan. The Seeing Eye Dog Association is looking for puppy carers and if you think that you could help please give them a call on 1800 037 773.

Royal feast at Resurrection, Macedon Macedon Music CONCERT Saturday 28 November at 8pm Jazz with the Michelle Nicolle Quartet. Lowland Farm 70 Brougham Road, Mount Macedon. Phone: 5426 2414.
The Gallery, Mount Macedon Our invited artist for November is talented weaver Antonia Pusterla whose exquisite computerdesigned woven garments and throws you will love to feel, see and maybe want to own. Weaving with alpaca is a feature as the weaver was an alpaca breeder. The use of colour, original weave patterns, soft handle and drapeability make these works of art heritage quality pieces. Some retrospective pieces are included to show the possibilities of this craft. The exhibition runs from November 3 to December 7. The official opening is Saturday November 7 at 2pm. Open Studios: our members Marian Alexopoulos, painter, Deborah Mullins, photographer, and Kathryn Portelli, mosaic artist, are among the artists opening their studios in November. To end this year’s highly successful series of concerts at the Church of the Resurrection Macedon, the Australian Chamber Choir will present a program of music by composers of the British Chapel Royal. Founded in 635 AD, the Chapel Royal has employed some of the country’s finest composers to provide music for royal occasions such as coronations, weddings, funerals and military victories. Under the direction of Douglas Lawrence and supported by an
orchestra of period instruments, the choir will perform two coronation anthems by Handel: Zadok the Priest and My heart is inditing, as well as the very powerful funeral music for Queen
Film favourites Bacall and Bogart Some film stars capture the imagination – at the time and down the years. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart are two such stars. In a tribute to Bacall, who died last year, the Macedon Ranges Film Society screened her first film, To Have and Have Not, at their October meeting. Adventure and romance blend in this 1944 film set in the French colony of Martinique. The film society likes to end the year with a laugh. In November, Best in Show, directed by Christopher Norma Aplin (left) discusses the film Guest, is just such a film. If with Peter Cleal and Jennifer Dodd. you’re a doglover, this is not to be missed but even if you’re not passionate about our canine friends, smiles aplenty are guaranteed. The group will then take a break but watch this space because we will be back next year with a new playlist with something for everyone.
The society meets on the second Wednesday of every month at the Woodend Community Centre. Film notes and an informal supper are part of the evening. MRFS is a membership-based club so initial enquiries must be made by emailing mrfilmsociety@gmail.com or by phoning Lorraine on 5427 0921 or Christine on 5429 5452.
Anne composed by Purcell. Other well-known composers represented in the program are Gibbons, Byrd and Tallis, as well as the 20th century Australian composer Malcolm Williamson, who was the first non-British composer to be appointed Master of the Queen’s Music. Williamson’s English eccentrics choral suite (1964) brings humour and wit to a program that promises to feature much splendour and great delight. The concert takes place on Saturday November 7 at 3pm. Bookings may be made at www.auschoir.org
Spring Art Show The Macedon Ranges Art Group’s Spring Art Show will again be held at the Woodend Community Centre. A star is born Macedon teenager Henry Wilson has made a big impact on the 2015 Victorian One Act Play Circuit, taking out the senior ‘Best Actor Award’ at the Performing Arts Centre in Ararat recently. Playing Young Pete Rutherford in the Frank Harvey directed Ledge, Ledger and the Legend, his performance was judged the best from the 15 competing plays from theatre companies all across Victoria. Henry backed this up shortly after at The Mansfield Performing Arts Centre by claiming the ‘Adjudicators Special Award’ from the 20 competing plays for his performance in a senior play and potential as an actor. These are outstanding achievements at a senior level for a 16-year-old, against many talented and more experienced performers on the One Act Play Circuit. Henry’s previous appearance and success at the 2013 version saw him awarded ‘Best Male Supporting Actor’ for his performance as the ghost of a 14-year-old boy in Lament For The Living, a heartbreaking tale set in the Victorian gold rush era.

Henry’s talent has been nurtured by the Mount Players Youth Theatre in Macedon over the past four years. He was recently recognised at the Macedon Ranges Shire Youth Awards, with the Individual Arts Award for Drama as well as the Individual Mental Health Initiative Award for his role in helping to promote and deliver the Live4Life program to Year 8 students across the shire.
Year's last show: Waiting in the Wings The Mount Players will begin our final production season of 2015 on Friday November 13 with Noël Coward’s penultimate play, the 1960 comedy-drama Waiting in the Wings. The story, set in The Wings Charity Home for Retired Actresses, tells of the jealousies and fears of a pair of old love-rivals who were cheated on by the same man, while around them the other residents confront an over-enthusiastic journalist who takes pity on them for simply being old and retired. Written during a time when Coward was focusing his writing on society’s more senior citizens, the play is nonetheless full of his trademark wit and honesty about life and death. Wings is directed by Cherry Servis and features a wide spread of cast from those who could qualify for residency in The Wings themselves to some terrific Mount Players Youth Theatre talent. There are also a handful of Coward’s original songs, including the lovely Come The Wild, Wild Weather, covered by actress/singer Sutton Foster on her Wish album. For tickets please phone the box office 5426 1892 or visit www.themountplayers.com and follow the

Door opens on true tales An unusual door opened in the Macedon Ranges recently, allowing some fortunate people to experience alternative lives. Story Door – a free, live, true and personal storytelling evening – was held at Holgates Brewhouse in Woodend on October 2. “We had an open microphone – anyone was welcome to tell a five-minute tale, involving no notes, no reciting, just raw human adventure,” said Kate Lawrence, Story Door organiser. “There were 10 storytellers, novices and old hands, from the Macedon Ranges and Melbourne. In styles as individual as fingerprints, they shared funny,

Local artist wins people’s choice for wildlife painting Gisborne artist William Ritchie won the people’s choice award at the annual Warrnambool Art Show in early October. His winning painting “Middle Island Guardian” was among well over 400 entries. The painting (below) shows William Ritchie a Maremma dog guarding the penguins against possible attacks by foxes at Middle Island just off Warrnambool. William was able to get out onto the island in August to do the preliminary work for his painting as that is when the rangers start monitoring the island, and when the dogs go to work as the birds start returning to breed.

sad and strange experiences.” The theme was ‘Firsts’. The audience heard a nurse’s moving story about organ donation and shared a city dweller’s eyeopening adventure in droughtstricken countryside. Other tales were told of moving house, learning to ride, kissing, studying, busking, losing virginity and losing a friend. “Oral storytelling has a seductive power,” said Ms Lawrence. “Stories are how we share wisdom, so others might benefit from our experience. They’re also intensely good fun.” Step through more Story Doors

Orchestra and joint choir of 80 to perform The Gisborne Singers and the Ballarat Choral Society will combine to form an 80-plus person choir to present The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace, supported by full orchestra with Helen Duggan as soprano soloist. Choir and orchestra will be conducted by Stephen Brockman and will perform at Woodend and Ballarat. These two choirs were last together for Mendelssohn’s Elija. The power and resonance of the two choirs together is quite wonderful. The Armed Man was commissioned in Britain in 2000 to mark the transition from one millennium to another. It reflects the passing of the most war-torn century in human history. This is a stunning work by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins who charts the growing menace of a descent into war with a hope for peace. It is an exciting work both to sing and hear in concert with soaring melodies that are quite breathtaking. Performances will be at St Patrick’s College Chapel, Sturt St, Ballarat, at 3pm on Sunday November 15. Bookings: Her Majesty’s Theatre box office 5333 5888 or www.hermaj.com Also in Woodend at St Ambrose Parish Hall, Cnr Anslow and Templeton Streets, at 3pm on Sunday November 22. Early term covers the spectrum at Montessori There have been a busy couple of weeks with students participating in Science Day by demonstrating their experiments to students in Cycles 2 and 3. Our theme followed the United Nations’ ‘International Year of Light and Lightbased Technologies’, a world-wide celebration of the importance of light and optical technologies to the development of society. Thank you to all our parents who supported their children in the preparation of their experiments and demonstrations. They did a fantastic job. Following on from Science Week we celebrated Book Week with our annual dress-up parade. ‘Books light up our life’ was the theme for this year. There were some very creative costumes from students and staff. Continuing our work in Oral Language with Cycle 1, the children involved themselves in dramatic play within a hospital set-up, with many a conversation on figuring out x-rays, applying a bandage to a broken arm and waiting to see a doctor. Well done to all our students who participated
“Montessori Hospital” – Oral language exercise in the recent Athletics Day and Softball Carnival. We are very pleased at the efforts of our students but more importantly at the great sportsmanship shown when supporting other competitors.
Busy days at St Brigid’s Welcome to the final term of the school year! With the fine weather we have been able to enjoy a range of Miki, school outdoor activities reporter such as Walk to School Day, and the juniors participated in a mini working bee as they took responsibility for tidying up their favourite outdoor areas of the school. The Preps’ swimming program has begun so you may spot a trail of green and gold walking to and from Gisborne Aquatic Centre. The Year 3 and 4 students continued their studies of endangered animals and had an incursion to help them get a better understanding of threatened and
endangered species. Four senior students had the opportunity to participate in a Mathematics Association of Victoria games day at Lumen Christi Primary School, where they competed against schools from around Victoria to work out a variety of maths problems, achieving some great results. Our fundraising efforts for the month included ‘Socktober’ where all students, teachers and staff members got the opportunity to wear colourful, odd socks to school every Friday, to help raise money for children in Madagascar to get access to clean drinking water. That’s all for this month, I hope you picked a winner in the Cup! Miki

New Gisborne’s feet do the talking New Gisborne Primary School has been a proud participant in VicHealth’s Walk to School month which encourages children to walk, ride or scoot to and from school throughout October. Each class busily recorded their walks to and from school for the whole month. This data was used to calculate our overall participation tally and to let us know how active we are at NGPS. On October 14 we held a ‘Crazy Shoes and Socks Day’ to raise awareness of the benefits of being active in our day-to-day lives. Well done on the great effort the students and teachers demonstrated by
wearing colourful shoes decorated with glitter, jewels and feathers and socks with stripes, spots and superheroes! Our fantastic efforts qualified us for a special breakfast sponsored by VicHealth. On October 21 we were treated to healthy fruit salad and yoghurt. Thank you to Mrs Frame and our parent volunteers who prepared breakfast for all of us. By participating in Walk to School, New Gisborne showed our continued commitment in supporting our students to learn healthy habits for life. Kylie Miller
Show Day at Macedon Primary School Macedon Primary School celebrated the end to a very hectic and highly successful Term 3 with their traditional Show Day. The day started with the animal parade around the oval where students had the chance to show off their pets from horses to turtles and everything in between. Students ran food stalls while members of the SRC awarded prizes for the best dressed students who dressed up as farmers or as their favourite type of pet. Each show day, much of the money raised goes to a selected charity organisation. This year, the SRC decided
on a new charity. With a big part of the day being the pet parade, the students felt a charity involved in animal welfare would be ideal. As a result, the Woodend animal shelter, Pets Haven, was chosen to be the beneficiary of a gold coin donation. Pets Haven representatives spoke to the students expressing their gratitude for the donation. For those interested in assisting, Pets Haven welcomes volunteers 16 and older or, alternatively, those interested are welcome to visit the haven and cuddle or walk the pets. Donations of blankets and food are also gratefully accepted.
Friday students’ adventures at Gisborne Primary School Grade 3/4 students’ activities Late last term, Grade 3/4 students enjoyed a triple treat of special Friday events. First up, they documented businesses and services in Gisborne’s CBD before receiving a first-hand look at the work of the CFA, SES and police in the emergency services precinct. We visited the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka in Ballarat on a sunny spring day. The original miners’ flag and other artefacts were on display. The wonderful playgrounds and open spaces on each occasion provided a great energy release. The 3/4s joined the whole school in experiencing a combined Footy Day
with the PFA Walkathon fundraiser to conclude Term Three. Grade 1 and 2 students’ activities Grade 2 students experienced the latest variation to the school’s camping program, becoming the first cohort to visit the Campaspe Downs Adventure Camp near Kyneton. Activity highlights included archery, initiative exercises, six-metre pole climb and long rope swing. Grade 1 students received a visit from A&A Wildlife during which they observed different types of animals and their habitats, while personally dressed up as jungle-themed creatures! David McCall

GISBORNE SECONDARY COLLEGE Career Chatter
What’s on @ GSC
with John Horley

Sarah Edward and Matt Spargo
This month at the College will be the last for the 135 Year 12 students. The role of college captain has provided us with immense opportunities to develop skills and maturity thought beyond us at this stage of our education. However, as the year finished up for the 12s, it was time to begin the process of electing new captains and college leadership team. It was an incredibly difficult decision for the principals and staff, with candidates going through a rigorous interviewing process, written application and student and teacher vote. Eshe Lane and Sean Doherty will succeed us as college captains, while Taylah Rees and Nelson Keane will take over as vice-captains. Congratulations to them all. Upon the completion of exams, the Year 12 valedictory dinner will mark the end to our 13-year school journey and the beginning of a new phase of our lives. The preparation for exams was draining with many students pulling 12-hour days at school to spend time with teachers and make the most of all the available resources. As well as the Year 12 celebration day at Bullengarook, Year 12s arranged for an array of novelty awards for students and teachers as a way of celebrating their departure. The Year 7 cohort went to Lady Northcote for their annual camp which included the giant swing, flying fox and other outdoor recreational activities. Finally, we would like to thank the community of Gisborne for reading this monthly column keeping you up to date with what’s been happening at Gisborne Secondary College. It has been a whirlwind year of assignments due and memories made, and being school captains and writing for the Gazette has been a wonderful experience. Now we will hand over to Eshe and Sean for 2016.
Natasha Noel was one of many talented students who presented their work at Gisborne Secondary College’s VCE art and technology exhibition last month.

Our thoughts are with our current Year 12 VCE students as they sit their final examinations. At the end of the day, results determine the starting point of the next stage of their career journey, not the end. By completing their VCE they have created pathway options that can be mixed and matched to suit individual circumstances. 2016 Years 10 and 11 students’ subject choices for 2016 will influence what pathway to follow at the end of their secondary schooling. Current year 9 and 10 students can do a Certificate lll School-Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship in 2016 in the following areas: Early Childhood Education and Care, Education Support, Fitness,
Allied Health Assistance, Companion Animal Services. By doing these SBATs, students have paid employment and industry recognised qualifications that also count as a fifth or sixth subject in their VCE studies. 2016 Year 12 students can begin extension studies with a number of universities from a range of subjects on offer that count as a fifth or sixth subject, giving them additional marks to their study scores/ATAR. Completing a university subject in Year 12 will also be credited against their university degree. Students/families that are interested in considering these options are encouraged to contact me in the Careers Office. These options are a great way to explore possibilities and will assist in the allimportant decision on what pathway to follow when students finish school.
Local band Mosey wins regional Battle of the Bands Local trio Mosey from Gisborne is the proud winner of the Battle of the Bands Push Regional Finals held on October 4. Hosted by Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Music In The Sticks (MITS) program and held in partnership with FReeZA and the Set List touring project, the regional finals saw acts from across Central Victoria compete. Mosey is an acoustic outfit comprised of Bridie Johnstone (vocals), Isaac Trickey (guitar, vocals) and Jimmy O’Hare (vocal, guitar). Formed nearly two years ago, Mosey began by busking on the streets of Gisborne, and have since gone on to play at various wine bars and coffee houses across the shire. Mosey will now perform at the Push Start Grand Final to be held at the Moomba Festival in March with other finalists from around Victoria.

Henry Howey: behind the monument H
enry Howey was born in 1805 near Belford, Northumberland, son of farmer Henry Howey and Ann Werge. His father died in 1817 and in 1825 Henry jr wrote to Earl Bathurst, Secretary of State for the Colonies, informing him that he intended to try his fortune in New South Wales and asking for a grant of land. On 21 October 1826, at the age of 21, Howey arrived in Sydney as a free settler with assets of £400 and plant and equipment valued at £200. He was granted 960 acres on the Wollondilly River, five miles west of Goulburn. Howey named his run “Strathearn” and by the end of 1836 he had become an extremely successful grazier and agriculturalist. Soon after his arrival, Howey married Maria Matilda Minchin, from the family after whom Minchinbury in western Sydney is named. Their first child was born at Minchinbury Estate. Following glowing reports by explorers Hume and Hovell of good grazing country in the Port Phillip District, Howey was one of the first Europeans to select a station near Mount Macedon. It was immediately north of John Aitken’s run and included what are today the villages of Gisborne and Riddells Creek. The run was divided into three sections: ‘Head Station’, ‘Red Hill’ and ‘Junction’. “The Australasian” of 31 January 1837 announced that “A month ago, Mr Howey, a wealthy squatter near Goulburn, sent his stock comprising 4,000 sheep and 800 head of cattle in the charge of a young man named George Hamilton and a party of 12 including a number of assigned convicts, to the new settlement at the Port Phillip District”. The Argus later reported that by the end of July 1837, there were huts associated with Howey’s run located on the Gisborne creek. One hut was roughly where the Howey memorial is now situated. There appears to be little evidence, however, that Howey himself ever came to Gisborne. An 1839 map of the area shows the location of “Howey’s Station” on the south bank of Riddells Creek about one mile west of the Riddell Village. In May 1837, Howey sailed from Sydney to Melbourne bringing his prized stud sheep. John Pascoe Fawkner wrote in the fourth edition of Melbourne’s first newspaper that the “Sarah”, bringing Howey from Sydney, had shored in Port
Henry Howey was the first European landowner in what became Gisborne. In his short life he also bought chunks of Melbourne that enriched his relatives for generations. Howey House opposite Melbourne Town Hall is possibly the best-known of those city properties. Many locals know the basics of Howey’s story – he came, he bought, he died, in fairly quick succession – but Ian Boyd has done some digging and uncovered fascinating details.
The “Sarah” did not arrive at Port Phillip. A cutter was sent along the coast in search of the ship but nothing was found, although one unconfirmed report was received that the ship was damaged when it ran aground on a Bass Strait island. The Howey family and members of staff were assumed to have perished at sea. Although Syme originally records the vessel as having been lost near Sydney Heads, a later newspaper report suggests that the “Sarah” may have been wrecked on Victoria’s Ninety Mile Beach near Woodside Station.

up the Yarra River to the falls at Queen Street. He attended the first land sales in Melbourne on 1 June 1837 and bought, for £120, three heavily timbered blocks at the corner of Collins and Swanston Streets.
On 21 June 1838, Henry, aged 33, his wife and six children – Ann, aged 10, Henry William 9, Maria Frances 7, William Minchin 5, Eleanor Jane 3 and John Edward 2 – together with a number of servants, sailed from Sydney in the 46-ton brigantine “Sarah”. On board was a large quantity of stores suitable for starting life in a new land. The deck was loaded with cargo including a dray.
he sale of Howey’s 50 valuable horses and gigs was set for 22 July 1839 at the cattle saleyards in Lonsdale and Swanston Streets, after which his four Collins Street allotments would then be auctioned. Fawkner’s The Port Phillip Patriot carried the following advertisement on 16 July: “Sale of sheep, cattle, stock, station and agricultural implements etc. near Mount Macedon. “To graziers, agriculturalists, hopeful capitalists, speculators and the newly arrived immigrants desirous of at once commencing sheep farming without the great expense and labour generally attended upon a first commencement. “The first rate and well known flocks etc. and the right of station of the late Henry Howey, Esq. at the Head Station near Mount Macedon on Tuesday 16 July 1839 and on the following day at 11 precisely each day, [comprising] 1,050 wethers and ewes, 10, 12 & 14 months old, in [the] charge of Richard Holt, Head Station; 670 ewes, 2 years old and in lamb, in charge of Morris, Red Hill Station; 530 ewes in lamb, 3 years old and upwards and 305 weaned lambs, 328 ewes, mixed ages, 93 rams of the farfamed breed of Lord Western, McArthur and Dutton Esq. in charge of Andrew Hawker, Head Station; 620 wethers from 10 months to 2 years and 576 Lord Western’s ewes about 4 months old in charge of James Brandon, Head Station. “After which the right of stations known as The Head Station, The Junction Station and the Red Hill Station with the valuable and useful erections thereon.” Continued next month, with intriguing stories emerging of white women living with Aboriginal tribes – did the Howeys survive?

For the green thumbs . . . GARDENING Column
The beauty of nature reserves is their diversity Please be aware that snakes are part of the environment in Daly Nature Reserve and are active between October and April. It is recommended that you avoid areas where you cannot clearly see the ground ahead of you. We have a lovely habitat corridor and share this space with many creatures. We ask that you be respectful and also mindful of where you walk. Magpie chicks are beginning to leave their nests so please be careful on roads and surrounding areas. Daly Nature Reserve’s primary purpose is as a conservation area and contains important vegetation indigenous to the region which also provides habitat for fauna from the top canopy of the trees to the microflora below the soil surface. We are delighted to have a water supply to the Heritage Garden, which has been made possible with a grant from Council. This will help us establish the kitchen garden area and look after the existing garden beds and heritage fruit trees over the summer months.

Hi Everyone I recently returned home to the Blue Mountains, and while I was there I was fortunate enough to be able to visit the beautiful property called Bebeah at Mount Wilson. The garden at Bebeah is famous for its mass planting of azaleas. To see the azaleas in their full spring glory was quite an experience. It made me stop and think how, as gardeners, we are prone to collect many different sorts of plants, or crowding our gardens with as many different varieties and flower colours that we can fit in! I think I would like to design or plant a small garden with just one species and colour and create a real wow factor, even if it only lasted for a few weeks a year.
Chris enjoys the singular beauty of the massed azaleas in a Blue Mountains garden.
Pyrete Flora Walk
Protecting from elm leaf beetle
Landcare The Bullengarook Group will be conducting a flora walk in the Pyrete State Park on Sunday November 15. Whilst there are a couple of steep grades the walk is generally suitable for people of all ages as long as they are reasonably fit, but participants need to wear good walking shoes and bring along hats, sun screen and some drinking water. We plan to meet at the Bullengarook Recreation Reserve from 9am and depart by car to the start of the walk in Hobbs road soon after 9.30am. This is a free event and all interested people are welcome to attend. If you have any queries then please call Norris McCarthy on 5428 9320. We look forward to seeing you on the day.
Macedon Ranges Shire Council is rolling out its annual elm tree treatment program to protect the shire’s 2,700 elm trees from the Elm Leaf Beetle. The beetle feeds on the leaves of elm trees and defoliates mature trees. While it is impossible to eradicate the beetle, Council has developed a preventative management program to protect significant stands of elms, predominantly in parks and avenues. Council is a member of Friends of the Elms Inc (FOTE), which maintains a state-wide elm register and helps local government and other bodies to manage threats to elm trees. Residents with elm trees on their properties are strongly encouraged to register their trees by contacting FOTE via foteinc@hotmail.com or 0409 870 860. For more information about Council’s Elm Leaf Beetle management program, call 5422 0333.

Lots on this month This month the Macedon Ranges is set to go off. Let’s start with a small list of big fun. You can go to the Kyneton Cup for firstclass racing and a party to match – it is on Wednesday November 4 – the day after the Melbourne Cup. Over the weekend of November 14 and 15 plan for the Macedon Ranges Wine and Food Festival and the Malmsbury Village Fayre to get your fill of the delicious offerings from local producers or take a trip to the Hanging Rock Craft Market for more handmade treats on the Sunday. The next weekend, you can head to the Kyneton Show and then there’s Cold Chisel at the Rock on November 21.

Sir Roderick Carnegie’s beautiful 10-acre woodland garden is sure to captivate visitors. Flint Hill dates back to 1922, when the process of carving a garden out of a partly timbered block began. Magnificent oaks, maples, beeches and conifers form a canopy over sweeping lawns bordered by hundreds of majestic rhododendrons. Pathways wind through woodlands, criss-crossing each other as they lead to a series of enchanting ponds and a lake. Address: 65 Romsey Road, Woodend. Extras: Garden tours 2pm daily, refreshments. Open: Saturday 14, Sunday 15, 10am-4.30pm, $10 (Under 18 free) Students $5.
on dealing with a variety of visiting wildlife. The AGM was also held on this day, and the club welcomes a new member to the committee, with the resignation of a member who has been on the committee for several years. The President’s report reviewed a very successful year despite a couple of unforeseen changes to the program. The fact that membership numbers are consistently around the mid-sixties is testament to the friendship, enjoyment and shared gardening knowledge evident at all our meetings. The next meeting is on November 11 at Macedon. For further information contact Kerry on 0408 115 759.
Make sure you have all your delicious developing fruit netted, or covered in some way from the birds for the next few months. Remember too to protect strawberries from birds, as well as slugs and snails. For juicy fruit ensure plants are well watered and mulched. There are plenty of vegetables to plant now including the warmer climate favourites of capsicums, tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuces. Slugs, snails and aphids will be very busy now so check your plants regularly for these pests.
In the flower and ornamental garden Plant some annuals into hanging baskets to hang from large tree branches, pergolas or special planter hooks. Add some flowering annuals in around the base of large container plants so they add extra colour. Note the prettiest flowers out in your area and add some of these to your own garden now. Check sprinkler jets and drippers are working properly for the hot summer months ahead. Liquid feed your pot and indoor plants with a weak solution every fortnight.
In the native garden Add some native annuals to your garden and plant out seeds of these into punnets now. Add a bird bath to the garden and keep it topped up over summer for the birds.
In the family garden Take some time out with the family for a picnic in a beautiful park or even in the backyard. Visit local gardens open for viewing. Help young children make a scarecrow from recycled old clothes and oddments. Create a bird bath, bird feeder or insect house from recycled natural materials and locate it near your children’s garden or bedroom window, where they can watch the activity. Sow some more seed of pretty annuals and useful herbs and vegetables. Pot up some vegetable or flower seedlings now into decorative pots to give away soon as Christmas presents! Remember your sunscreen, hat and protective clothes when you are spending time outdoors and do not forget to keep a fresh bottle of water handy. ENJOY the nature around you!

New members welcomed at Croquet Club This season we have welcomed two new members in Jo Kerr and Elizabeth Payne. I hope you enjoy our great game. The pennant teams are having mixed fortunes, one team is doing very well and while the top team is being competitive, they are struggling to field their best side on a regular basis. Look out now that everyone is available once more. Thank you to those who filled in. We certainly did not want to forfeit. A few dates to remember: on Monday November 16 we are sharing a morning with students from the Bullengarook Specialist School. Wednesday November 18 is our Social Day, so please remember items for the trading table. This is one of our fundraisers and we look forward to visitors from clubs near and far. Wednesday December 9 is our Christmas lunch so make sure your names are on the list. Hope you make lots of hoops. Margaret Wardell

Dragons’ season going well The Gisborne Cricket Club fired up in the first round of the GDCA competition on Saturday, October 10. With all senior teams competing and Under 16s and 14s in action, it was a busy weekend. Our McIntyre Cup team got away to a flying start with a big win over Romsey at Gardiner Reserve. With the new scoreboard beaming out, the Gisborne boys introduced four new players to the team. Premiership Captain Jason Lock presented new red caps to all the debutants before play. Tahir Afridi is a quick bowler from the UK, Jay King has come over from Rupo, Riley Vernon is a 14-yearold who has come up from our juniors and Jack Anderson got his chance after a good season with the seconds last year. Beau Valka also made his return from Premier cricket. In other grades, Gisborne performed well in C Grade and F Grade with strong wins.
For those girls interested in further opportunities to be involved in cricket, the Gisborne & District Junior Girls Renegades modified competition will start on Wednesday November 11 from 5pm to 6.30pm. This will run each Wednesday over a fourweek period at Riddells Creek Reserve.
Riley Vernon, 14, receives his new cap as he joins the senior team, along with Tahir Afridi, a quick bowler from the UK. The second round saw Gisborne come away with an excellent win over last year’s premiers Sunbury United in the McIntyre Cup. C grade also had a win but results were mixed for the lower grades. For most teams the third round that started on October 24 were twoday matches with the results poised to go either way at the end of Day 1. The club has just confirmed
with the Gisborne & District Cricket Association that due to the huge growth we are experiencing (we now have 95 registered players) we have no choice but to field an extra team which will go straight into D Grade, taking our number of senior men’s teams to seven on top of the 15 junior teams and one women’s team, which now makes us the largest cricket club in the GDCA. – Andrew Headberry

AGM specially important The club is holding its AGM on Sunday November 8 from 4pm (not 1pm as advertised in last month’s Gazette) in the Gisborne Sporting Clubrooms. Held as a day event for the first time in recent memory, the club hopes this AGM will help to attract a broader range of members and people from the community. Current President Colin Rodgers says this year’s AGM is especially significant, with a number of changes afoot heading into 2016. “We will be instigating a ‘Call To Arms’ to all our members. The club needs to engage with its members and supporters far more than it does today and to do this we need more people to come on board and spread the word and jobs amongst a greater number of our members,” Colin said. “The AGM is an integral part of that process, as we will outline the direction the club will take in a number of different areas in 2016.” The Gisborne Cricket Club will open the bar and there will be tea and coffee available for all attendees. The GFNC committee would like to remind all current members that your attendance is required.
Netball coaches needed The Gisborne Football Netball Club is looking for netball coaches for the 2016 season. The GFNC plays in the Bendigo Football Netball League and has experienced success in recent years. We are looking for coaches to continue developing the talent in our region. All coaching positions are currently open: A Grade, A Reserve, B Grade, B Reserve and Under 17. Training is held on a Tuesday and Thursday nights throughout the playing season and pre-season training nights are yet to be determined. All competition games are held on Saturdays. Remuneration for the A Grade Coach will be based on applications and experience. Please email for additional information or forward applications to stewartsinoz@hotmail.com or noelene. rymer@hotmail.com by November 15.

Our esteemed member Steve Wallis was diagnosed earlier in the year and the club organised the Steve Wallis Day in his honor. The day was an outstanding success with many local clubs supporting the day and 28 teams participating. We thank all our members for their tireless work, donations to the raffle and their generosity. Steve was called upon to cut a cake specially decorated with the MND inscription and his brother Terry then responded for Steve, thanking the club and all the bowlers for their support and generosity. Also on the day the club held the opening of the 201516 bowls season with Life Member Laurie John rolling the jack and CHBD Chairperson Dorothy Evans delivering the first bowl. Dorothy and Life Member Joan John then cut a special cake to officially open the new season. The installation of the new carpet green has been completed, the project having taken two years all up. Chairperson Dorothy congratulated the club on the outstanding facility and for investing in the future which has seen a large influx of new members. John Evans, 0427 947 235

Thought you’d seen the last of football for a while?
In preparation for the warmer months, Ben Le Vagueresse, our president, has been instructing us in tying his original fly patterns designed to attract native fish such as Murray Cod and Yellow Belly. (The warmer lakes and streams north of the Great Divide, such as the Loddon River, are Ben’s stalking ground). Ben’s native streamer flies are designed for maximum visibility and impact. Tied on wide-gaped large hooks they feature strong colouring. An innovative, effective pattern he taught us is his “Frog” made up from a foam body with rubber strips tied on to give the impression of legs and feet. His flies are tied with a “weed guard” that lifts the fly hook clear of snags and weeds. We get the benefit of Ben’s shared experience during our tying sessions as he imparts his knowledge of the best methods of casting and presentation to cod sitting at stream edges or sheltering at the edge of submerged snags. The answer to the puzzle in the last Gisborne Gazette is “Alisterus Scapularis” is the “King Parrot” so the fly fishing spot is King Parrot Creek. Huge crowd at netball tournament
Macedon Tennis Club News Well Junior Club Champs, what can I say. Date: October 11, weather superb, attendance huge!
The New Gisborne complex was packed on October 18 for the annual tournament organised by the Macedon Ranges Netball Association. With 14 Victorian associations and clubs and over 50 teams competing, it was an amazing day. The winners were: Under 15 Section 1: MRNA. Under 15 Section 2: St Therese's. Under 13 Open: Wyndham. Under 13 Reserve A: Sunbury. Under 13 Reserve B: Flamez
We were so proud of our kids getting out there and competing in a friendly, fun and inclusive way. The format is a “fast Lisa Fowler four” round robin comprising singles, doubles and mixed doubles. These categories are split into grades and gender. A really great day was had by all concluding with a barbecue. Kudos to our winners: A grade doubles – Josh Doolan and Raph Bartollo; A singles – Raph Bartollo; B doubles – Oscar Barry and Tom Sinclair; B singles – Gus Price; C singles – Thomas Shaddock; D doubles – Arran Templeton and Nils Agin; D singles – Thomas Wildenauer. Georgia Slattery won the Girls’ Singles and Jacinta Slattery and Natasha Miller won the Girls’ Doubles. The Mixed Doubles winners were Bryn Rowland and Charlotte Fowler. On the following Sunday we hosted the Senior Club Champs with the pressure on them to be as good humoured, talented and cute as the kids! Lisa Fowler Happy hitting!

Successful petanque tournament in Gisborne
Open Triples competitors in action at Gisborne.
The third Mt Macedon Petanque Club’s Open Triples Competition – rapidly becoming Victoria’s Premier Petanque Tournament – was held on Sunday October 11 with 69 players coming from clubs as far away as Avoca and Rye. The weather was good in Gisborne until heavy rain fell during the final round but resilient petanque players put up with all
weather conditions in their pursuit of playing this enjoyable sport. Mt Macedon club members fared well with four players in the top five teams. The winners were from the Weird Petanque Club in Endeavour Hills. As in all sports winning is enjoyable but participation and gaining experience is what most players seek. A raffle was held to support Bri-
die Kinghorn, the club’s junior, who at the end of October was to compete in Bangkok with the Australian Junior team. Good luck to all. Three Macedon Ranges players, Shirley, Lindsay and Danny, travelled to Perth in mid-October for a major competition. If you want to be a part of a good sporting club, contact Danny on 0417 552 481.

Lucky Ebony Spiteri from Gisborne was among 250 junior netballers from across Victoria who had the chance to hone their skills alongside some of Australia’s biggest netball stars at the Mac Pack Netball Super Clinic on Thursday 24 September. Commonwealth Games gold medallist Bianca Chatfield was joined by Melbourne Vixens players Chloe Watson and Alice Teague-Neeld at the State Netball and Hockey Centre, where they put promising young players through a skills and drills session.
Ebony was a standout, impressing Bianca and the Vixens with her defending, shooting and passing techniques. Bianca was just as excited to hit the court as the junior netballers. “The clinic is a great way for me to share my passion for the game with aspiring netball stars. It’s a fun opportunity for juniors to pick up some new tips and techniques that will help them improve their game,” she said. The Mac Pack Netball Super Clinic is a McDonald’s initiative.

The 9th UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) Youth Forum – Young Global Citizens for a Sustainable Planet – took place in Paris on October 26 to 28. The forum brought together over 500 young women and men from all over the world to focus on issues
related to sustainable development goals and global citizenship and ensure that the voices of future generations remain front and centre of the new development agenda. The UNESCO Youth Forum was created in 1999 to provide young people with the opportunity to present their concerns and ideas to
member states and help shape the direction of UNESCO. Discussions at this year’s forum focused on how young people, committing themselves as global citizens, can contribute to the creation of a sustainable planet.
Cubs have fun at Warringal Camp Cub Scouts from 1st New Gisborne’s Icely Pack had a great time at the recent Macedon Ranges District Cub Scout Camp at Warringal Camp, near Whittlesea. New leaders Akela (Evan McGregor) and Bagheera (Mandy Baxter) had their first time camping out as leaders and enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Parent helper Sarah Stuart-Higgs made sure the food was plentiful and up to Cub Scout expectations! In addition to the Term 4 program, members of the Cub Scout and Scout sections are involved in fund-raising for equipment. Along with parents and leaders they’ll be running a barbecue at the Gisborne Carols by Candlelight at New Gisborne Church of Christ, Sunday December 13. New Gisborne is developing a Joey Mob for children aged from around 6 to 7. Parents and young people of this age are meeting each Wednesday to try out Joey activities in the lead-up to formally starting the Mob. Planning for the 2016 launch of the Venturer Unit (ages 15 -18) is well under way with the Unit commencing formally on Founders day, February 22. Great weekend for special needs Scouts
Cub camp was a new experience enjoyed by all.
Kaetlyn undertakes Queensland adventure Kaetlyn (pictured) from Gisborne Girl Guides presented a report to her fellow members about her experience of attending the camp ‘Great Bunya gathering’ in Queensland with several hundred Girl Guides from Australian and overseas. She undertook water and mud activities and chose to visit Dreamworld for her off-
site activity. She made friends with a Malaysian girl who presented her with a traditional cloth and swapped badges with girls from other units. This term the members are undertaking the Australia badge as they explore aspects of their family culture, Australian culture and learn about civic pride.
Scouts Victoria held our 2nd Victorian Agoonoree on September 25-28. We had 20 Scouts with special needs who required about 65 additional personnel, including carers, catering and support staff. Activities included travelling on a raft (by far the most used attraction), mini-golf, screen-printing, cake baking (and then icing and eating) and face-painting. We had a disco and a bonfire, and the Scouts had the opportunity to ride in a 4 x 4 and/or an older MG supplied by GREAT Volunteer David Parrot. One of the wheelchair-bound Scouts wanted to sleep in a tent and this was arranged. The Special Needs Scouts came from many centres including Mooroopna, Frankston, Glenroy, Dandenong, Doncaster and Beaufort. Scout Groups assisting included 1st Macedon, 2nd Woodend, 1st Woodend (MRVU) and Bundoora. We were fortunate to have nine occupational therapy students from Monash University as support staff. Camp Chiefs were Michael Baden-Powell (grandson of the Scouting Movement founder) and Joan Baden-Powell.

Bullengarook’s tennis club
Evening tours of Duneira
When paying a visit to the Bullengarook Recreation Reserve you will notice the beautifully laid out tennis courts. I thought I would like to visit the history surrounding this local sporting group so I called on a friend who has been here all her life and taken part in the tennis club’s goings on since the tender age of 15. The first tennis club was formed at the Bullengarook School by some of the parents and members of school council. Some of these were Bill Walker, Vic Berry, Frank Shaw and Headmaster Kevin McCoy. There was only one court at the school and it was formed from asphalt. Having two of the members working at the Shire Council helped with the preparation of this court. Many families took advantage of it and the school children were encouraged to play regularly. As Bullengarook grew and the school population expanded, the council was approached to build new tennis courts at the Recreation Reserve. This would have been some time in the early 1970s. As we remember it, the courts were built first followed by the erection of the hall. There was a shelter shed at the rear of the courts which was used as clubrooms until its demise when the wind blew it away. The senior Saturday afternoon team began first followed by the juniors and ladies’ teams which were submitted to play in the Gisborne competition around that period. I remember when the courts were resurfaced with asphalt and the players complained bitterly about the wind whistling through. Once again the community got together and spent a long day planting trees around the perimeter. These trees have now reached the point where they are too big and require extensive pruning. There were many family fun days held at the Recreation Hall and courts when we were encouraged to dress up and there were prizes to be won, usually followed by a great barbecue. The courts are now surfaced with mod grass and delightful to play on. Sadly the number of children at the school dropped and the older children moved away to begin their lives. Juniors then had to go to the Gisborne Club for coaching and to play. The only consistency remaining today is the Ladies Competition on Tuesdays. We have however a few stalwarts who are at present searching around for a tennis coach for Bullengarook to encourage our younger generation back to play for Bullengarook. A “Come and Meet and Try Day” is being held at the courts at the Recreation Centre on Sunday November 8 from 10am onwards. So come on all you newer residents (and the older ones also). Get along to this day and meet new friends and support our community.

Vineyard Road is unavoidable for some cycling commuters.
Please take care on Vineyard Road We have just celebrated national “ride to work” day. Did you know we have a number of people who regularly ride to work in the Macedon Ranges? Not only do I see these people cycling short distances on our local main streets but there is a contingent of cyclists who regularly commute to Melbourne. Their route has been considered with safety being a critical aspect – but a section of Vineyard Road is unavoidable. There are simply no other practical ways to connect to quieter roads. Our message to the community is to be mindful that there are many among us who continue to ride and who have been deeply touched by this crash. Please be careful, particularly when you are turning left on to an on-ramp or slip lane. If we can all pay due caution these accidents can easily be avoided. Amanda

Protecting our trees from elm leaf beetle Council is rolling out its annual elm tree treatment program to protect the shire’s 2,700 elm trees from the Elm Leaf Beetle that feeds on the leaves of elm trees and defoliates mature trees. While it is impossible to eradicate the beetle, Council has developed a preventive management program to protect significant stands of elms, predominantly in parks and avenues. Council is a member of Friends of the Elms Inc (FOTE), which maintains a state-wide elm register and helps local government and other bodies to manage threats to trees. Residents with elms on their properties are strongly encouraged to register their trees by contacting FOTE via foteinc@hotmail.com or 0409 870 860. Gisborne businesses are helping the environment with Western Water’s Choose Tap program. Western Water has given away more than 3,500 free reusable water bottles to encourage the community to choose tap water over bottled. So far more than 100 businesses in the region have signed up, including medical centres, schools, real estate agents, plumbers and mechanics. Any Gisborne businesses
who would like free water bottles for staff can sign up by visiting the Western Water website at www. westernwater.com.au One of the biggest benefits to choosing tap water over bottled is cost, with the price of a bottle of water at the supermarket costing around the same as filling a reusable water bottle from the tap every day for two years. PET plastic water bottles are also a huge source of waste, taking up to 1000 years to break down in landfill. Tap water is a great way to avoid unhealthy sugary drinks and stay hydrated.

I always love to hear about the great things that our Macedon youth are up to. I was recently delighted to learn that Leyla Newing, a Year 12 student, has been selected as a top 10 finalist for the junior Archibald ‘Young Archies’ art prize in Ballarat. Leyla’s portrait was chosen from 4500 entries in the Face up/Paste up project. Leyla’s work, along with the other finalists, will be enlarged into street art posters and pasted in designated ‘We R You’ sites, including the George Hotel and the Civic Hall. Leyla attended the final presentation on October 16. Congratulations on an extraordinary achievement.

Fr Gerry recently completed the Way of St James and is hosting a gathering for people who are interested in completing or have been on this fascinating journey themselves. It’s an opportunity to share experiences and offer advice to people who are interested. Many who visit Spain complete some small fractions of the journey. The walk is filled with culture and heritage, and offers pilgrims a chance for self-reflection while walking in the footsteps of many generations who have come before. The gathering will be held at St Brigid’s school on Tuesday, November 17, at 7.30pm. For enquiries call the parish office on 5428 Desiree Chambers 2591.

Holding a grudge is costly, and you and the people in your life end up footing the bill! In all probability the offender has moved on, forgotten the offence and left you holding the bag. But in reality, blame, not the offender, is the crux of the problem. Don’t let your grudges fester and turn into: (1) Self–victimisation. Negative energy expended on others just drains your resources. Don’t surrender your power to your grudges! (2) Bitterness. It’s like a deadly poison; a little of it can contaminate your entire system. (3) Isolation. There’s no joy in being around someone who constantly indulges in blame, defensiveness and anger. (4) Negative role-modelling. Maybe you think, ‘My feelings are nobody’s business!’ Maybe – if you live on a desert island. (5) Sabotaged repentance. Genuine repentance and forgiveness aren’t possible until you’re willing to face up to your grudges. If you’re still blaming others, you’re avoiding responsibility. A bad attitude is like a flat tyre – until you change it, you’re not going to get anywhere. (thewordfortoday.com.au) http://faithworkscc.com.au

Gisborne Gazette Gazette November November 2015 2015 34 Gisborne
Residents of Gisborne will have noticed big changes happening to our building in Brantome Street. Work is nearing completion at the front. Work at the back (on Heritage Way) is already done. Next on the agenda is upgrading the interior. By the end of the year we hope to have a much more usable and attractive facility. And by “usable” we are talking not only of the church family itself but the community of Gisborne. This will be a central and flexible facility available for groups to use.
So, change is on the way. Change, too in our ministerial team. We have written in the Gazette previously about the arrival of our new deacon Rev Wendy Elson. We are now negotiating for a second minister to join her in serving the whole of the Macedon Ranges. Eventually we aim to have a team of three ministers. The whole plan, embracing lay people as well as the ordained, goes by the name of the Macedon Ranges Partnership, consisting of 12 congregat ions in all.
A special wedding at Church of Christ On October 10, we experienced a first at Gisborne Church of Christ, with the wedding of Kim Huggins to Kane Hill. While it’s not unusual for us to host a wedding, this was a first in that both the wedding and reception were held on the church grounds. The ceremony was held in the Community Garden, where around 100 guests witnessed the marriage of Kim and Kane, with Senior Minister Paul giving a very apt practical illustration of the marriage journey, employing soil, seeds and water. It was a really moving ceremony and while a produce garden mightn’t be what we normally think of for a wedding, it suited the occasion and the couple perfectly. The wedding reception was held in our church auditorium, with decorations designed by the couple and executed by their hard-working wedding party. Combined with a great band, the night really went off well. For us at the church, it was great to see yet another way in which our facilities could be used to benefit our community. October also saw us launch our new Facebook page. Search for “Gisborne Church of Christ” to check out our page and keep in touch.
The happy couple Kim and Kane, with Kim’s parents Marc and Marg Huggins.

Op Shop Jottings The Melbourne Cup means it is now just over seven weeks until Christmas. We have lots of Christmas decorations for sale at St Paul’s Op Shop, so get in early before they all disappear! Thank you to the many people who are observing our policy of not accepting furniture items at our Op Shop. We simply don’t have the space to store furniture at present. On Saturday, November 14, between 8am and 1pm, there will be a whole town Garage Sale in Gisborne. Register your Garage Sale FREE at The GREAT Centre, 4/23 Hamilton Street, Gisborne or call 0401 810 581. At the end of the day, you may like to donate the remaining small items to our Op Shop. There are deposit bins at the front of the Op Shop. Our Op Shop has been supporting the Samaritan’s Purse Gift Shoeboxes for needy children overseas. The Gisborne community has embraced this wonderful nationwide project and approximately 160 boxes will be forwarded to Cambodia along with many thousands of others from around Victoria. Our shop volunteer this month is Di McCarthy, right. – Graeme Millar 0413 781 501
100 Years Ago From the pages of the old Gisborne Gazette
November 1915 Announcing Public Holidays for 1916 1st January – New Year’s Day; 26th January – Anniversary Day; 2nd April – Good Friday; 3rd April – Easter Eve; 5th April – Easter Monday; 6th April – Easter Tuesday; 23rd April – St. George’s Day; 24th May – Whit Monday; 3rd June – His Majesty’s Birthday; 23rd June – Prince of Wales’ Birthday; 2nd November – Melb. Cup Day 30th November – St. Andrew’s Day; 25th December – Christmas Day; 26th December – Boxing Day (Usually the 27th Dec. is proclaimed.) At the Law Offices, the 2nd Jan. is also observed as a holiday. “A Hunpleasant Way” – Those who have been privileged to see the “Silver King” will remember that there is a bailiff in the play, who, when he takes possession, is careful to explain that he has “a pleasant and a hunpleasant way”. The ratepayers of Gisborne are generally treated in the “hunpleasant way”. In one place, a lawn was torn up as though a German shell had landed, and after burying the water meter over six inches below the surface, the operators went away, leaving the householder to clear up the debris of stones and clay, which had been extracted from the depths and spread all over the grass. Another ratepayer complained that the box was put on his footpath, and another, who has horses, had it put in such a position that it stands a fair chance of being knocked over. Considering that all these ratepayers had to pay for these meters about six months ago, and will have to keep them in order at their own expense and renew them when necessary, they should receive more consideration. The meter that was buried was fished up from the depths, but there is no doubt that the method of putting it on was the “hunpleasant way”. Council Meetings – The Gisborne Shire Council has now settled down to the idea of starting the meetings at 10.30 or 11 a.m., instead of 2 p.m. This is certainly a great advantage as there is more time to get through the business, and when there is not a great deal to do, of finishing at an early hour. The luncheon, which was held as usual at Power’s Hotel, was very satisfactory. Licensing Act 1915 – Notice that Compensation will be Paid. Whereas the undermentioned Licensed Premises have been deprived of their licences by the Licences Reduction Board, NOTICE is hereby given that the amount of compensation payable to the respective Owners of such premises, pursuant to the provisions of the Licensing Act, 1915, is: Gaythorne Hotel, Gisborne £375; Victorian Alps Hotel, Macedon £474. Gisborne Races – The November meeting of the Gisborne Racing Club was held on Tuesday, the net proceeds to be devoted to the Wounded Soldiers and the Belgian Relief Funds. The weather, which had been cold and showery, improved on Tuesday, though light showers fell at intervals. There was a good attendance, mostly of visitors. Even the object, deserving as it was, failed to attract the Gisborne residents, who never patronize the local race meetings.
