Kids Corner FROM the Editor’s Desk with Bryan Power

Gisborne has never been the recipient of such an avalanche of funding as has occurred during recent months, culminating as we go to press with the announcements of $6.6 million for the Calder Freeway roundabout works at New Gisborne, $880,000 for upgrades to the pavilion at Dixon Field, $3.1m for improvements to the GisborneMelton Road and $3.7m for the Early Years Hub to be constructed in Robertson Street. As more than one resident has remarked to me recently, “may the Macedon Ranges long remain a marginal seat!”

Talking of riches, the Gazette has been overwhelmed with copy for this edition and Pip and I have had to make many tough decisions in producing the paper. My apologies to those of you whose articles have been omitted or have had to be shortened. It’s good that so many groups want to have their say in our community paper but there is only so much space that we can make available

in its 32 pages.

The winter sports have now all been finalised and four of our junior football and netball premiership teams are featured on the front page. As well, you will find photos of the winter tennis comp champions throughout this edition.

Congratulations to all who have been involved in playing, coaching and supporting the many local teams. Gisborne Football Netball Club had another good year with all but one team reaching the finals and Macedon saw their Under 18s footballers matching their Gisborne counterparts in making it to the grand final.

We were wrong. My apologies to several groups of people for stuff-ups in last month’s edition.

The Mount Players’ caption on page 13 stated the photo to be of the cast of ‘Harold and Maude’. It was, however, a picture of the young cast from the Mount Players Youth Theatre entry together with the cast and crew of The Mount Players’ entry in the One Act Play Festival.

And on page 9 we had the name of the contributor of the article on immunisation as well as the name on the photo wrong. The contributor was Riwka Hagen, practice manager at Gisborne Medical Centre, and the photo was of Dr Kasey Hogg.

My apologies to you all. I think that there is an opening here for a younger and more on-the-ball editor than this fumbling old fellow! Any takers?

Councillor’s Column with Cr Sally Piper Spring is here and summer is fast approaching, which means longer days and more time to socialise with friends, play sport and just enjoy life in general. I hope you are able to get out in the gorgeous Macedon Ranges and experience some of our wonderful attractions during this season.

The south of the shire has been lucky in the past few weeks to receive funding announcements which will really help council’s budget and the local community: ● Dixon Field will receive funding from the State Government and Council to upgrade the change rooms which, as many users of Dixon Field are well aware, has long been needed. We love Dixon Field – it is a great asset for the south of the shire – so hopefully this is just the beginning of upgrades to this sporting precinct. ● Many now know that a new site has been found for the Early Learning Hub (which will incorporate a new kindergarten to replace the outgrown Grant Avenue kindergarten). This new site is on Robertson Street opposite Dixon Field. It will have good parking access, is within walking distance to schools and parks and has a nice outlook. The State Government has announced it will contribute funding towards this long awaited project. ● And we finally have a solution to congestion at the on and off ramps of the Calder Freeway in New Gisborne with the State Government confirming the upgrading of these intersections with roundabouts.

This is a big project which will cause some traffic delays while being built but the outcome will be worth it. It is important to note that it is only the on ramp and off ramp intersections being upgraded and no other part of Station Road.

Residents are invited to take part in a bird survey as part of National Bird Week, October 20 to 26. See page 24 for details on how to sign up. This is a great opportunity to note what breeds of birds are in your backyard as well as assist research about native vs invasive bird species and to raise awareness of local species and their relationship to native vegetation and local ecoystems.

The Gisborne Auxiliary held its Annual General Meeting in September. Tricia Kaye was returned to the position of president with Elaine Millar continuing as secretary/ treasurer. Terry Poor stood down as minute secretary and was duly thanked by the committee Elaine Millar for his valued contribution.

The next fundraising effort will be a stall in the IGA Village Shopping Centre from Monday October 27 for one week. Christmas cards and calendars will be for sale and tickets will be sold for the annual raffle of a Christmas hamper and a beautifully drawn picture of the Gisborne Court House by Terry Poor.

What do we love about life in the Macedon Ranges? The beauty… the serenity… the safety… we don’t have city problems… But did you know that theft from cars in the Macedon Ranges is reaching alarming levels?

We are a team from Gisborne Secondary College developing a campaign to respond to this problem.

We call it the ‘Lock It Or Lose It’ campaign. We are working in partnership with Victoria Police, Swinburne University School of Design and Macedon Ranges Shire Council, with funding from the Victorian Government Community Crime Prevention Program.

You might have seen our posters and leaflets about town. You can check out a YouTube clip we created at school via our webpage (mrsc.vic.gov.au/ lockitorloseit). We want everyone to understand that a few seconds is all it takes for someone to steal your valuables from your car.

Burglaries and trailer thefts concern police Police are concerned by the increasing number of burglaries that have occurred in recent months.

Commercial and community premises have been targeted in the region in overnight incidents including shops, sporting clubs, schools and other businesses.

Also of concern is the increase in the number of burglaries being committed on sheds and garages, often in rural or more remote locations and generally during daylight hours. Police are urging people to review the security of their properties.

Police are concerned by an increasing number of trailers being stolen in Central Victoria. Of particular concern is the increasing number of tradesmen’s trailers being stolen, often containing large amounts of valuable tools and equipment.

Gisborne’s Inspector Ryan Irwin said “Never leave trailers stored on nature strips or other locations where they can be accessed by the public.

“People can also assist us by reporting any suspicious activity.

“If you see people loitering around building sites or around unattended vehicles and trailers, please contact The front of Gisborne Post Office was smashed in a police immediately.”

Farewell to popular librarian

Minister inspects GSC stadium progress

Minister Martin Dixon (centre) with GSC students, principal Andrew Robertson, far left, and guests, is ready to turn the ceremonial sod.

State Education Minister Martin Dixon visited Gisborne on August 27 to inspect the construction of the doublecourt stadium at Gisborne Secondary College.

The stadium will be used by students as well as local sporting and community groups, and will see the school's former gym converted into performing arts and drama spaces.

The State Government invested $3.5 million and Macedon Ranges Shire Council contributed $1.5m towards the $5 million project.

2015 Australia Day award nominations now open If you know someone who deserves recognition for their work in the community – including some of our younger people – nominate them today for an Australia Day award.

Each year the Council recognises people who make outstanding contributions to everyday community life – not only prominent people in each community, but also those who work tirelessly in the background.

There are five awards: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Achievement Award, Community Event Award and Arts Ambassador.

Youth Space back in action Gisborne Youth Space kicks back into action from Thursday October 9. Sessions run every Thursday from 4pm-6pm at Manaaki, 35 Aitken Street, Gisborne.

Activities include ‘Master Chef’ cook-offs and fiestas, hip hop, movie afternoons, scavenger hunts, circus skills and creative workshops!

Late in July there was a flurry of excitement as Chantal from Reptile Encounters arrived at Swinburne Avenue Kindergarten. She brought lots of special friends with her in boxes of all sizes. The anticipation of what was hiding was almost too much for the children to bear!

Inside a warm pillow case hid a tiny sugar glider named Jazmin. She was one of the most popular visitors of the day. Jazmin was very soft and had beautiful big eyes.

The children loved the lizards, Russell and Stacey. Everyone had a chance to feel their scaly skin.

Sheldon the turtle was a little shy, but poked his neck out to see what all the fuss was about!

Then there were the snakes! The children were very excited, but the teachers seemed suddenly a little quiet! Vicki, the Victorian carpet python, and Tiny, (not very tiny at all!), the olive python, are Chantal’s pets so the children knew that we

definitely do not try to touch snakes in the wild. The children found the snakes felt much smoother than they had expected.

The Kangaroo group had a lovely surprise when Chantal brought out her red-tailed black cockatoo named Sammy. He flew across the room

and was very loud. Sammy caused much excitement!

Last but not least was Betty, the fresh water crocodile. I am pleased to report that no one went home with missing fingers that day!

Fire Brigade holds dinner and awards night Members, family and friends of the Gisborne Fire Brigade enjoyed their annual dinner and awards night on July 26 at the Gisborne Golf Club.

The Rookie Fire Fighter of the Year was awarded to Cameron Stewart who has been with the brigade for less than two years.

The Fire Fighter of the Year was awarded to Allison Pulbrook. Allison started with the Brigade as a junior firefighter and has progressed through to the senior ranks, and is in the midst of ‘Respond to Urban’ training. During the past fire season Allison deployed on six strike teams while continuing her involvement with other brigade activities, including being a junior brigade leader and bal-ancing full-time

Iraq Appeal fundraiser

The Friends are pleased to announce that the Australian Red Cross Centenary barbecue sponsored by Bunnings raised $455,000 Australia-wide.

At our next meeting on October 3 we have long-time member and well-known potter Pat Beasley to demonstrate one of her many other skills, which is felting.

We will also have a trading table with lots of bargains.

The November 7 meeting will be our centenary celebration afternoon tea, and we invite all members, former members and interested persons to join us.

Jean Dixon will present a history and some excellent photos.

We meet in the Gisborne Seniors rooms on the first Friday of the month from 1.30 to 3.30pm and welcome visitors to join us for a cuppa at our friendly and informal gatherings. Our contact person is Trish Clark and her number is 5420 7712 for information and to book Jean Poor for lunch.

Now that the footy’s over for another year, we can look forward to warmer weather and the spectacle of the racing season, the fashions, the racing colours, the beautiful horses – it’s a great time of the year.

Gisborne Uniting Church is publicising an appeal for displaced families in Iraq via the Act for Peace Program of the National Council of Churches in Australia.

Over a million people, mostly from religious and ethnic minority groups, have been forced to flee the city of Mosul and urgently need help. These people, particularly Christians and Yazidis, are homeless and terrified after weeks of brutal destruction of life and property by forces of the IS insurgent group.

Gisborne Uniting Church has made an immediate grant of $2,000 and is seeking to raise funds to buy basic items – $40 will buy a food ration pack consisting of rice, vegetables, beans and salt, while $80 is sufficient for a hygiene kit. A larger donation of $110 buys a survival kit, which includes a blanket and cooking kit as well.

200 walk 'Out of the Shadows'

Participants walk ‘Out of the Shadows’ at Woodend Children’s Park.

Cooking classes at Macedon CWA Cooking demonstrations for CWA members across our Group were held at Macedon CWA Hall on 9 September.

Carol Clay, former CWA State President and a very experienced competition cook, demonstrated sponge and biscuit making while sharing many tips from her vast experience.

She also provided ideas for improving our cooking for competitions.

It was an informative and entertaining day enjoyed by 19 ladies.

With the support of the Macedon Ranges community, September’s ‘Out Of The Shadows’ walk was an unqualified success. This Lifeline initiative was adopted by the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group whose aim is to raise awareness of the issues surrounding mental health in our community.

Event organisers Lynsey Ward and Annie Rowland welcomed participants and offered their own testimonies before joining the mass of supporters who wound their way through Woodend Children’s Park, ably directed by young people from the

Live4Life Crew, Youth Ambassadors and the local community.

The message of the morning was that our community members have avenues of support, should they need them, both locally and beyond, and many of those agencies were on hand.

Rotary raising funds for leukemia research On Sunday October 12 Pat and Jacek Bialobrzeski will open their home and garden for their 10th annual Leukemia Luncheon to raise funds for blood cancer research and services, with all money received going to the Leukemia Foundation.

Starting at 12 noon at Jabula house and garden on the outskirts of Gisborne, the cost is $25 per person for a two-course meal, tea and coffee, catered by members and friends of the Gisborne Rotary Club.

Computers 'flow on' to school

We are a group of mums with pre-school aged children.

We are supported by St Andrews Presbyterian Church and we meet for morning tea, kids craft playtime and a short talk on the second Monday of the month at 9.30am in the white hall at 49 Fisher Street, Gisborne.

The topics covered in our talks are aimed to help support and encourage mums in their role as wives and mothers. Our talk in October 13 is about spring cleaning.

Children at Gisborne Montessori School will have less time to wait for a turn on a computer after Western Water donated eight secondhand models to the school. The donation is part of Western Water’s Corporate Social Responsibility program, which aims to give back to the community by supporting schools and community groups.

Breathometer in local pubs Drinkers in Gisborne, New Gisborne and Macedon hotels can now see whether they are just a little bit over...or a lot.

The Rotary Club of Gisborne has installed breathometers in three hotels in the area: the Telegraph Hotel at Gisborne, the Railway Hotel at Macedon and the Mount Macedon Hotel, using $17,000 in grant funds from the TAC. For a $2 fee, the machines test blood alcohol content when you blow through a straw. Project coordinator Dennis Franklin said the objective was to reduce road accidents by enabling patrons to see whether they should be driving after drinking.

The initiative is the result of cooperation between the TAC, Rotary, Macedon Ranges Council, Victoria Police and the individual publicans. The police say that many drivers are unaware they’ve had too much and are just a little bit over, Blowing into the machines is a quick and easy way to check.

Men's Shedders had a fascinating visit to the Port of Melbourne tower.

Janet Banks, one of our very enthusiastic volunteers, who not only gives her time at the Op Shop but also assists with lunch time dining room duties at the Oaks, came up with this brilliant idea.

Continuing our “Men’s Shed on the Road” theme, one of our trips was to the Maton guitar factory in Box Hill. What an amazing place, turning out over 8,000 world-class guitars each year, about half of which are exported.

They even make most of their own electronic components. There was a lot to learn about precision craftsmanship and Shedmen Doug (our Tour Director) and Michael (guitar aficianado) took it all in.

The event is a 2.5km or 5.0km walk or run starting and finishing at Gardiner Reserve. It encourages everyone to get out and be active with family and friends.

The event kickstarts a campaign promoting the new Health Centre in Gisborne which is due to open in January 2015.

We’ve also visited the Port of Melbourne control tower on the edge of the Yarra and learnt a bit about the safety, security and logistical aspects of Australia’s biggest container port.

How to achieve success in your weight loss Gisborne TOWN Club has had success in the past month with two members graduating. This means that they achieved their goal weight (set in conjunction with their doctor). Their weight loss journeys were different but achieved by Dianne Egan being in a supportive environment.

In our Group Therapy sessions they learnt how to shed those extra kilos through adjusting their lifestyle and eating healthy and wholesome foods and exercising.

I had the privilege to be at the Take Off Weight Naturally (TOWN) Australia AGM on September 13 where the guest speaker was Associate Professor Tim Crowe from the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at Deakin University.

Professor Crowe spoke about how diets in all their various forms don’t work. Instead the biggest predictor that works is to stick to it long term and the best way to achieve this is by having support on your weight loss journey. He also said we need to turn off our ears and eyes about the latest new diet and instead, “eat mostly plants and not too much, and do more exercise”.

‘Betty’s Boop’ with Betty Doolan Opportunity on Hamilton Op Shop arranged to come to the Elms. The lovely ladies put tables down the middle of the LEP (Life Enhancement Program) room and topped them with all sorts of lotions, jewellery, dolls, teddy bears, books, a variety of knick knacks, ladies’ and gents’ clothes.

I decided just to go and have a look, remembering that I had spent the day before working out a budget as my Christmas Club account of $2.68 is not going to go far. Later as I returned to my room with dolls, bears and other bits and pieces I came to the conclusion that there is no such thing as just going for a look.

Residents of the Gisborne Oaks would like to thank the lovely ladies from the Op Shop who helped residents reach for things and gave them advice on what they were buying. All up, residents had a most enjoyable day.

A number of residents went to see Ernie Sigley at the Kyneton Town Hall last month and then had lunch at the Kyneton RSL and it was lovely to see one of our carers Jan with her mum who is on holidays and her mother-in-law, who is a friend of the Elms. Oh, I forgot, before the show there was morning tea with scones, jam and cream.

The wonderful Country Womens Association left a gift for all the gents on Father’s Day; CWA never forget the residents on special days. A very big thank you to all the members of the CWA. One of the residents, Barry, has spent the past five months organising the footy tipping competition. He has done a fantastic job, with Edna being the winner.

Gisborne Oaks is lucky to be surrounded by wonderful people whether it be staff or you folk out there, so from all residents a big thankyou and God bless.

New CEO named The new CEO for Macedon Ranges Health is Don Tidbury who has been the Deputy CEO of Northeast Health Wangaratta for the past three years. Don will take up his appointment on November 3.

Counselling services are here to help Macedon Ranges Health has two counsellors, Sally Weis and Veronica Sinclair, who are available to help clients overcome personal difficulties and work towards positive change.

The idea of speaking with a counsellor can sometimes seem daunting but according to Sally people come for help with a wide range of issues which might relate to grief, family distress, marriage and relationship issues, depression, anxiety, or gambling and substance abuse problems.

Men and women of all ages attend counselling and can benefit from feeling less alone in dealing with the pressures in their lives. It is possible to be seen by a counsellor without a doctor’s referral.

"Everyone processes the challenges in their lives differently so it may be just one or two visits that are required or it can be for an extended period," Sally said.

"Counselling provides an opportunity to speak with someone outside of the normal support network in a confidential situation. It enables people to reflect deeply about what is Counsellor Sally Weis going on for them and develop skills to manage difficult situations in their lives."

Counsellors help clients to focus on feelings, experiences or behaviour, with the goal of helping positive change.

How to manage eczema What is eczema?

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a recurring, noninfectious, inflammatory skin condition. Patches of skin become red, scaly and itchy and sometimes tiny blisters can form and the affected areas of the skin can weep. This weeping is a sign that it has become infected. Eczema is not contagious.

Eczema can vary in severity and the symptoms may flare up or subside from day to day. Using moisturisers and cortisone-based ointments can help ease the symptoms.

How common is it?

Eczema affects 30% of Australians at some stage of their lives. It occurs in all age groups; however it often has its onset in babies between two and six months of age and usually improves with age.

What causes eczema?

The exact cause is unknown, but it is found to be linked with some of these triggers: External: irritants such as chemicals, weather (hot and humid or cold and dry conditions) and allergens such as house dust mites, grasses, foods, pets, soaps, clothing. Cigarette smoke is also a known irritant and trigger for eczema.

Internal: stress, some foods such as dairy and wheat products, alcohol, eggs, nuts, seafood, preservatives/colourings and a family history of eczema, asthma or hay fever. If both parents have eczema there is an 80% chance their children may also develop eczema.

Tips on managing eczema for both children and adults ● Keep fingernails short to prevent scratching from breaking the skin. ● Wear 100 per cent cotton or soft fabrics – avoid rough, scratchy fibres and tight clothing ● Use rubber gloves with cotton liners ● Have lukewarm baths and showers ● Gently pat, don’t rub, the skin dry with a soft towel ● Apply a moisturiser within three minutes of bathing to “lock in” the moisture ● Avoid rapid changes of temperature ● Use ‘sensitive skin’ washing powders and detergents ● Reduce stress ● Learn your eczema triggers and how to avoid them.

Making Waves at Mount Macedon Primary Recently at Mount Macedon Primary School we have been practising and performing a whole-school production called Making Waves.

This production is about four fishermen who want to clean up a bay. The fish living in the bay work to help the fishermen. The fish, after having a meeting and deciding what to do, hold a dinner cabaret to raise money. The night is a huge success, raising lots of money (in the form of old gold Spanish coins from a shipwreck). Once in possession of the coins, the fishermen can clean up the bay.

The Foundations were parrotfish, the 1/2s were seahorses, the 2/3s were starfish, the 4s were jellyfish and the 5/6s were mostly sharks but some were whales, octopuses, crabs, sardines, a tuna, a dolphin and fishermen. The production was a huge hit and everyone enjoyed it.

Red Rock Christian College We held our Annual Night of Music on September 12 and what a night it was!

The school community joined together and was inspired by the amazing talents of our primary school children.

From the Prep-Year 1 students who sang up a storm, to the Year 2-4 students who wowed us with their ukelele and recorder performances of songs written by previous Red Rock students to the wide and varied talents of the Year 5 and 6s.

Every student participated in something and many challenged themselves to overcome shyness and stage fright.

Following the concert, we enjoyed a gorgeous array of cupcakes, slices and other delights, whilst also enjoying the art display.

Some of these presentations will also be on display during our upcoming School in Action Days on Tuesday, October 14 and Friday October 17. Ring the school for details on 9740 5400.

Under the sea... The annual whole school production was a big hit.

Students maintain garden at Bullengarook campus The horticulture students at Bullengarook Secondary campus have been busy recently completing some major landscaping projects around the grounds.

Visitors to the school are impressed to hear that the students are responsible for almost all of the maintenance of our beautiful school grounds as well as some new initiatives. Horticulture teacher Fran Hartz and our resident expert Peter Daly oversee the program and ensure that work is carried out safely and correctly.

The students have constructed paths around the grounds as well as laying paving around the bell-tower, pruning and mowing. The students display an excellent work ethic, not complaining if they are out in cold weather.

Jam-packed finale at Macedon Grammar During Term 3 at Macedon Grammar students have had many opportunities to show their capabilities and skills during numerous activities.

The Sovereign Hill grade 2-6 excursion was well attended and a lot of fun as the students experienced the olden days with gold panning and a mine tour. The MGS swimming carnival held at Kyneton Pool saw lots of students showing off their swimming abilities while having a great time with friends. After a full day of events Gideon house won the shield for this year.

The year 7-10 camp in Canberra in the last week of term 3 was four days full of exciting and entertaining things to do.

On the last day of Term 3 MGS held its annual Years 9-10 Shakespeare festival and the school’s Talent Show. On that day also was the Annual IB Art Exhibition which showcased the talented year 12 students’ final Art Event for their IB studies. Term 3 has flown by and we are now looking forward to the holidays, warmer weather and the start of term 4.

Premiership term at Holy Cross In footy the third quarter is often referred to as the premiership quarter; and the third term is often the premiership term for schools!

The Preps have grown into their uniforms and the Grade 6 children are looking more ready for high school by the day!

Across the school, children have consolidated their learning and are ready to enjoy the last term with their classmates and teachers.

Term 3 had many extra activities take place: Year 4 students received the Sacrament of First Eucharist, the Year 1 students enjoyed an activity evening with some animal friends, the Father’s Day stall and activity night was again a success, 10 Gisborne Gazette October 2014

and our Feast Day was celebrated with a Mass and some Hip Hop dancing! Holy Cross Has Got Talent was a very popular lunch time activity in term three, with some high standard performances.

Book Week was bigger and better with lots of different characters at the school who then enjoyed a live dramatic production.

There were also excursions, interschool sports, new SRC representatives, a wonderful tree created in the art room and special presenters at the Grade 5 Breakfast!

I hope you all enjoyed a rest during the holidays! Term 3 might be the premiership term but term 4 is always the busiest!

Monsters, maths and water... and more National Literacy and Numeracy Week involved students designing a cover for an unknown book, which spawned some crazy-looking creatures inspired by a story titled ‘I Need My Monster’.

As well as a Family Maths Night for the juniors, numeracy tasks involved precious water, measuring distances of supply, exploring features of the humble bottle and discovering some surprising statistics – that while 70% of the Earth’s surface is water, less than 3% of it is fresh, and two-thirds of this is locked up in ice.

Staff explored anaphylaxis guidelines and updated policies relating to allergies on their recent Curriculum Day, ensuring that students are kept safe.

All staff receive regular training about recognising and responding to an anaphylactic reaction, including administering adrenaline autoinjectors (such as EpiPens).

This knowledge would benefit all community members as part of their first aid awareness.

The school choir has been busily showcasing its exceptional singing David McCall skills, finishing fourth and receiving an honourable mention at the Ballarat Eisteddfod.

Crowds at the Beat Concert in Kyneton also enjoyed its performances there in early September.

Gisborne Primary School Grade 6 student Emilia Rigby uses her initiative and works independently, striving for success in all she does. Her dedication and consistent focus has allowed her to achieve academic results across all subjects to a high standard.

Emilia has represented the school in netball and is a member of the Maths Olympiad extension program where she achieves outstanding results. She has taken on the role of peer mediator assisting other students.

She works hard to make positive changes around the school through her position on the Junior School Council. Emilia is an outstanding citizen of Gisborne Primary School.

During Term 3 our New Gisborne Primary Year 1 students learnt about the weather. They did experiments about water, rainbows, wind and clouds.

To support their Inquiry Learning they spent the cold winter’s day of August 18 at Science Works in Williamstown. They visited exciting exhibits such as the Planetarium, Nitty Gritty Super City and Thinker Head. They learnt about many things we usually take for granted in our daily lives such as speed, muscle movement and strength.

The students had lots of fun while getting lost in the learning side of things.

Year 1 are looking forward to more Inquiry Learning next term about farming including crops, produce and cattle.

After researching the progressive motor neurodegenerative disease ALS, or motor neurone disease, the 20 grade 6s in class 6B decided that it was a most worthy cause and they were prepared to endure the freezing cold ice water (and to drench their teacher) to continue to raise money and awareness for this fantastic organisation.

Their goal was to raise a minimum of $400.

The challenge took place on Friday September 5 on the school oval. Parents, family and friends gathered to witness the event and, of course, donate money.

They intend to uphold the tradition of nominating others after completing the challenge. They have invited Joanne Duncan, Martin Dixon and Denis Napthine to take up the challenge.

Passion Projects at St Brigid’s As the school term came to an end, many exciting things had happened at St Brigid’s.

The grade five and six classes managed their own ‘Learning Timetable’ consisting of several tasks.

Students were given time throughout the week to manage their tasks and organise them accordingly. As a reward for completing everything on time, students were given the opportunity to work on their ‘Passion Project’.

Projects were investigations of student’s special interests. Many projects related to animal welfare, raising money for charities, performing arts and architecture.

Two grade six girls organised a ‘Girls Night In’ to raise money and awareness of animal extinction. They collected money to “Adopt an Animal” at Melbourne Zoo. The night was a great success and we were able to adopt a red panda for six months and make a donation to the SES. Another Passion project consisted of a vision to buy guinea pigs for St Brigid’s. The students organised a colouring competition and a dress-up day to raise money towards this goal.

Special primary school program at GSC A group of enthusiastic primary school students have been taking part in a three-week enrichment program at Gisborne Secondary College.

Three activities have been on offer: a masterclass cooking class, mind-bending maths, and a lightsensing alarm project.

The students pictured above, using a 3D printer at the college, are Max, Sean, Zach and Jake who are from New Gisborne and Gisborne Primary Schools.

With the success of the current classes, GSC is planning to run similar classes in the future, inviting primary school aged children to participate.

Education Minister Martin Dixon was impressed to read the column by school captains' Jessica and Issac when he met them on his visit last month.

Students attend Leadership School at Gnurad Gundidj Each year, a select few Year 9 students from schools around the state are chosen to attend a leadership school at Gnurad Gundidj, Glenormiston, one of three such Education Department campuses. Students stay for nine weeks.

The students from GSC – Mitchell Blake, Alex Clark, Dean Karopoulos, Cooper Carmichael, Stephanie Crafford, Brittani-Lee Anderson, Amelia Trickey and Jennifer Herrera – had to apply and make it through an interview process to be selected.

They arrived at Gnurad Gundidj on July 20. Students were engaged in team building activities, outdoor education, personal learning and a community learning project (CLP). With the students of the other eight schools, they presented their CLP on September 12 to local dignitaries, and invited staff and principals from their school. This was an outstanding chance for students to experience the outdoors while honing their leadership skills. They returned home on September 20.

Career Chatter with John Horley October is an important month at the College for students and their families. As well as preparing for their final exams, VCE students wanting to enter university are making the difficult decision about what university best suits their aspirations and needs.

Some VCE students are considering taking a gap year and beginning their studies in 2016. Some VCE and VCAL students are applying for TAFE courses or arranging interviews with apprentice providers or employers to begin their apprenticeships in 2015. Others are moving from a School Based Apprenticeship into a full time apprenticeship.

Students and families often find this a very difficult time. Families are encouraged to discuss their concerns with school staff and are welcome to make a family appointment with me to explore options and make plans for 2015. GSC raises funds for Clown Doctors

Each term at Gisborne Secondary College the Heads of House, along with their students, organise an activity for the school to participate in.

In August, Macdonald House with its head, John Woodlock, raised funds for the Clown Doctors. John took some students to meet the Clown Doctors at the Royal Children’s Hospital. They took a donation of $1000, the funds having been raised by staff and students. The house weeks at the college encourage students to participate in worthwhile activities while also helping the wider community.

The next house activity was run by Dixon house with “Pay it Forward Week”, which raised $1400 with a sausage sizzle and casual clothes day.

What’s on at GSC with Jessica Mundy and Isaac Trickey

Three down, one to go. This final term will be busy with exams and end of year celebrations, but third term has been just as productive, especially for the leadership group and all the year 12 and other VCE students in this past month.

The college has chosen its future school captains, vice-captains and other leaders for 2015. As leaders of 2014, we have been given mentor roles with our corresponding captains to pass on our experience and knowledge. This is new for the school and will be beneficial in preparing the future captains to carry on the good work.

Work on the new gymnasium is also going to plan.

As the end of the year approaches, Year 12 students are finishing up their last outcomes and getting ready for their end of year exams. Most Year 12 students are also putting in their VTAC applications, which are our course and university preferences.

Although the hard yards have begun, during the holidays there will have been a lot of work with practice exams and cramming. We wish all the Year 12s the best of luck in their endeavours for the rest of the year, and encourage them to continue with the hard work and determination they have shown throughout the first three quarters of this school year.

Phoenix at the Market The Phoenix Macedon Ranges Art and Craft Group with the cooperation of the Gisborne Olde Time Market will be setting up a stall at the coming market on Sunday October 5. The stall will have on display and for sale a small selection of items hand-crafted by members as well as information on how to become a member.

The Phoenix Group, which consists of independent artists and crafters, holds exhibitions and sales in June and December each year and is looking to recruit new artists and crafters from the region who are interested in exhibiting and selling their work as a part of a larger organised group.

Phoenix group members will be only too pleased to discuss with any prospective members the workings of the group so drop by the stall, browse the work on display and pick up some information.

The next Phoenix exhibition will be over the weekend of December 5 to 7.

Macedon Ranges Art Group news Traditionally held at the CWA Hall in Mount Macedon, this year's Macedon Ranges Art Group (MRAG) spring art show will be held at the Woodend Community Centre. This move is necessary to accommodate the significant increase in MRAG membership over the past two years.

The new venue will enable members to enter more and larger and works and provide space for painting demonstrations away from the main display area. The Woodend Community Centre is located in the heart of the Woodend Township.

The official opening will be on Friday evening October 31 with the

show open from 10am to 4-30pm on Saturday November 1 and finishing on Tuesday November 4.

Our final workshop for the year will be a pastels one-day workshop by renowned artist Maxwell Wilks to be held in Woodend on Sunday November 30. The cost for members is $80 and $90 for non-members.

Young Voices of Macedon continue busy program Young Voices of Macedon continues to be a vibrant community choir of 30 children aged between 5 and 13.

On September 7 they were guest performers at Mass at Our Lady of Rosary Church in Kyneton when they sang three hymns, a responsorial psalm and two communion anthems.

The next performance will be the annual concert ‘Songs of the Isles’ on Sunday October 26 at the Church of the Resurrection, Macedon. This

concert will feature secular and sacred songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, including songs in Gaelic.

Singer and celtic harpist Lucy Forrest will be the guest artist.

The choir now comprises three groups. The Vivo group under the direction of Lizanne Richards comprises children in the 5-8 age group. All older children make up the Cantabile group under the tuition of Dianne Gome and the recently formed Madrigali group

gives the oldest children opportunity to sing madrigals and other advanced repertoire. The choir is privileged to have Anna Clarke as accompanist and Emma West and Anne Diver as associate tutors.

Photobook competition a great night What a great time was had at Macedon Ranges Photographic Society’s September award presentation night of our inaugural photobook competition. Several visitors joined the members and guest judges, Peter Thomas, director of Photobookshop and Greg Hotson, photographer and member of the Melbourne Camera Club.

John Spring’s, ‘Trees’ and Deborah Mullins’ ‘Kimberley Coastline’ received Highly Commended awards for their books. It was such a pleasure to look through all the very diverse entries.

Unfortunately MRPS was not able to retain the Quad competition trophy this year. The regional challenge, held in Bendigo, was very competitive with a very high standard set by all clubs. Subject matter, camera skills, processing techniques and print quality continues to improve.

Ron has skilfully caught them at a brief moment of being together on a branch because wrens, as you know, are on the move all the time.

The society meets twice a month at the Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House, 59 Main Road.

Heroes, The Mount Players’ final senior production for 2014, has just closed after its four-week season. Tom Stoppard’s endearing study of three very different war veterans was well received by audiences, although it took a little while to build momentum at the box office, due no doubt to the play being largely unknown in Australia.

The three actors — Tony Old as Philippe, Christopher Haddon as the somewhat embittered Gustave and Mike De Jong as Henry pulled off difficult roles with great skill and timing. The set, designed by director Frank Harvey and painted by Margaret Meuhlheim, was another memorable feature of the play.

Although it was a small production in terms of cast and running time, Heroes will be remembered by many as a comic masterpiece, a lovable, quirky tale of the ambitions and fears of the retired.

Next is our 2015 Season Launch that will be held at the theatre, 56 Smith St, Macedon from 5pm on Sunday October 5. Members and public are invited to find out what’s on and to learn how they may get involved in the company. The theatre will then be in the hands of the Mount Players Youth Theatre for their NovemberDecember production of Seussical the Musical.

Part 1 S A CHILD child I travelled back in time and experienced Victoria during the Gold Rush. My “Time Machine” was an extraordinary box that I found in a neighbour’s shed. Inside this box were 120 photographic views of Victoria of the early 1860s that detailed many towns and the people that inhabited them: goldminers at work, carriers transporting goods in covered wagons and farmers ploughing with oxen. There were views of the Bendigo Railway being constructed, including huge piles of timber at Wood-end Station. There were panoramic views of Gisborne showing the “Bush Inn”, Hamilton Street, and long-gone buildings including the “Farmers Arms” hotel in Calthorpe Street, views of Riddells Creek Bridge, Woodend, Kyneton and the trigonometric survey cairn under construction on Mount Macedon.

The photographs were grandly titled “Jones’s Views of Australian Sceneries” but the photographer was a mystery. After much research, I have concluded that he was the architect and surveyor, John Holme Jones. Jones can be described as a “colourful” character. He was born in London in 1826 and arrived in Melbourne around 1852. It is possible that he is also the J. H. Jones recorded as being in GIsborne in 1853. Jones was listed as an architect working from 1 Henry Street, Collingwood, in the early 1850s and appears to have also worked as a draughtsman for various companies in the latter half of the 1850s.

By the 1860s Jones was in Ballarat and quickly found himself in trouble. The partnership of “Craven and Jones” created quite a furore in the Ballarat press of 1861 when the partners attempted to jump the claim of the building they were renting in

New look, new stories, new experience

Two of ‘Jones’s Views of Australian Scenery’: Riddells Creek Bridge and Woodend Railway Station laden with piles of wood for the Bendigo rail line.

Sturt Street. It is perhaps for this reason Jones took to photography around 1861.

He is recorded as selling photographic views to the Kyneton Municipal Council in 1861 for an astounding sum of £22/10/0.

(These photographs are now in the State Library of Victoria collection.)

He then appears to have conducted a tour of Victoria from 1861 to1862 and produced “Jones’s Views of Australian Sceneries”. In September 1862 he is recorded as trying to sell the photographs on the “Art Union” principle, which was a lottery-type system. Around 1862-1863 he re-named the views “On Her Majesty’s Territories”, perhaps for an interstate audience who may not have seen his collection as being representative of Australia. Although in all likelihood conceived as a money-making venture, his photographic career proved a disaster and he went bankrupt in 1863.

Despite his shaky start he went on to have quite an extensive architectural career. In Ballarat his works included the “Eglinton Hotel” in Main Road, the front portion of the “Unicorn Hotel” in Sturt

Street, “Winchester House” next to the fire station in Sturt Street, a mansion for a Mr Wynne which is now incorporated into Loreto College and the grand “Alfred Wing” of the Ballarat Hospital, since demolished.

His most notable building is the Ballarat Mechanics Institute built in 1868-1869.

Nothing with Mr Jones was straightforward and the building of the Mechanics Institute was not trouble-free. Concurrent with building the Institute, he was chairman of a mining company burrowing under Ballarat, with the community fearing half the town would subside, while bizarrely he was also chairman of the “Sunken Vessels Recovery Company” which was attempting to raise the wreck of the “City of Launceston”. This involved the world’s only known salvage operation using hydrogen gas. His directorship of the mining company landed him in Melbourne Gaol, while his directorship of the Recovery Company caused him to be declared insolvent in 1870.

Having successfully alienated himself from most of the population of Ballarat, he next went to Bendigo.

The old gaol cells are being reopened daily to the public thanks to funding support from Gisborne & District Community Bank. This follows some technical difficulties that saw the lockup closed for several months.

Funding from Macedon Ranges Shire will see a new exhibit in the brick stables to display the district’s social, industrial and agricultural heritage. It will be open daily as part of Gisborne’s Heritage precinct. The blokes from the Men’s Shed who are still using the Court House two days a week have kindly cleaned out the stables in readiness for the project to begin.

A plaque designed by the society and funded by The GREAT Association has been erected in the “Quiet Corner” of the precinct to recognise the bluestones recovered from the 1860 Police House.

Members are compiling a comprehensive record of local people who served in World War 1 in preparation for an exhibit in April 2015. Some of these stories will be shared on the History Page over coming months.

Working sessions are held every Wednesday from 10-4 at Gisborne Court House. A couple of hours of your assistance would be most welcome.

Bullengarook Landcare gears up for Pyrete walk This is looking like a delightful year for our annual walk in the northern edge of the Pyrete Forest.

On Saturday October 4 we shall assemble at the Bullengarook Recreation Reserve at 9.30am ready for car-pooling to Hobbs Road. We then start our easy, slow walk through the bush all on good tracks, admiring the diversity of spring growth and flowers and, if we’re lucky, birds and animals.

Once again we will have an ‘expert’ from Bal-

larat Field Naturalists to help point out and identify the interesting things. The route we plan is about 3.5km and kids really enjoy it, and the pace is nice and slow.

Garden Club gets an update Space does not allow a detailed description of the two large properties that almost 40 Gisborne Garden Club Treasurer Kerry members visited Langmaid in mid-September, but our thanks go to both owners, who very generously walked and talked us through their properties giving an understanding of how they had achieved their results thus far, the problems encountered along the way, and their eventual plans for their gardens.

One property, the more recently developed of the two, having been started about four years ago, hopes to become a fully self-sustaining

venture and home for two family units. The other garden has been rediscovered by the new owners after years of neglect which has meant a slow process of clearing out in order not to damage established trees and shrubs over-run by blackberries and weeds.

Several club members visited this property when it was first bought and so could fully appreciate the tremendous efforts involved in its transformation.

The October meeting will be at a member’s garden in Gisborne.

Friends of Daly Nature Reserve The friends have been following up on previous working bees with the regrowth of weeds being tackled recently.

Great weather helped everyone involved have a happy and productive morning, with a relaxing picnic break spent in the Daly Nature Reserve Orchard (pictured).

The nomination to have the Acacia rostriformis listed under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act has now been recommended by the Scientific Advisory Committee. This is a wonderful step for our rare and endangered plants in the reserve.

A few things on in our own backyard

The spectacular Prunus blossom.

Hi Everyone.

Most gardeners are familiar with the beautiful flowering cherry often used in gardens in the Macedon Ranges. with Chris Williams Flowering cherries belong to the genus Prunus. These spring flowering ornamental trees are at their peak in September and October, and many of them are quite spectacular.

In my garden I have a small specimen of the lovely Japanese apricot known as Prunus mume “Alphandii”.

It will eventually grow to about five to six metres tall.

This ornamental apricot has double rosy-pink flowers that are sweetly scented and very attractive to bees.

The flowering peach (Prunus persica) comes in many colours from the purest white to pink and almost red. There is even a striped variety in pink and white.

Most cultivars of Prunus persica bear fully double flowers. Most will only reach a maximum height of about four to five metres.

Prunus x blireana is a variety that was used extensively in the 1960s and 1970s. It is a cherry plum that has perfumed phlox-pink flowers from the end of winter into early spring. It has an upright habit and is fast growing; it will often reach five metres in height.

The genus Prunus is well worth considering for your garden .They are hardy, easy going and, despite the name, they don’t require pruning!

Veteran of Vintage Machinery Society Obituary Henry (Harry) George Ripp 6 July 1920 – 30 August 2014 Harry was born in East London and later attended the local Central School for boys. In 1940 Harry joined the Merchant Navy and served in the maintenance of motor torpedo boats and destroyers.

As an Ordnance Officer he was commended for cheerfulness and untiring devotion to duty.

Harry married Phyllis in 1942.

Norman was their first child followed

by Gill. Later Jacqui and John joined the family, which grew with the addition of six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

In 1952 the family departed Scotland on HMS “Cameronia” bound for Australia as “Ten Pound Poms”. Two days after arriving in Melbourne Harry began working for NIC, an Ansett company with whom

Harry’s funeral service was held both in Australia and abroad. Harry was a member of the Glenroy at Wooling Hill, New Gisborne, on Lodge, Scouts, Probus, U3A and Thursday September 4.

Masters remain focused on football for fun The season has now ended and Gisborne again acquitted themselves well over the year.

The over 35s won all but one game, going down to Melton by less than a goal, while the 45s finished as one of the better-performing teams of their competition.

The club congratulates Stevie McGee, who received the Steve Simpson Memorial Trophy, for his contribution during the year and Danny, Kempy and Rhino on their Life Membership awards for their services to the club over 10 years, including coaching and involvement on the committee.

Thank you to all the volunteers who made game days possible: Tony, Nicco and Stores for umpiring, the trainers, water boys and all the people who provided “a plate” for the after-game social activities; and a special mention to those who successfully organised the midyear, Christmas and family functions over the course of the season.

Due to some recent retirements we have been struggling to field two full teams each fortnight. We have a philosophy of “Football for Fun” and would like to extend an open invitation to anyone who would like to give Masters Football a go.

We train every Wednesday over summer at Sankey Reserve at 6.30pm, followed by a barbecue and refreshments. Prospective players, regardless of past footy experience or fitness level, are welcome to come down and enjoy the social and health benefits Richard Perkin associated with Masters Footy.

More success for Gisborne golfers

Mt Macedon Petanque Club Members met at Wooling Hill, New Gisborne to remember former member Abhi Kirschvink who had returned to Germany due to ill health.

Abhi, a popular member with the club, passed away in August. Members and friends played petanque and planted a tree in his memory in a glorious setting with perfect weather.

Promotion of petanque is always in the minds of members. They were pleased when a class studying French at Gisborne Secondary College wished to try their hand at petanque. On September 15 nine students attended the piste in Station Road for some instruction and games and, as with all students, the competition was keen.

Club members will be on hand on Thursday, October 16 from 10am – during the Seniors Festival – so come along and try. All equipment will be provided along with a cup of coffee or tea. If you just want to see some experts playing, visit on Sunday October 12 when players from all around the state will be in Gisborne for our Triples Competition.

Club on the mount growing strong The AGM held on September 6 reported that the club is going from strength to strength. Membership numbers are strong and have grown significantly from previous years.

The election of the management committee and office bearers was a straightforward affair with the outgoing committee renominating successfully to continue their good work for another year.

Glenn Moore (president), Bruce Fraser (secretary), Bob Close (treasurer), Ben Langmaid (captain), David Hudson, Brian Freestone, Peter Semmens and Matthew Willis (ordinary members) will capably guide the club over the next year.

Work commitments meant Isaac Golden retired and he is to be thanked for his contribution.

Even if the weather isn’t the best you will always find the ladies out on the golf course.

On August 27 we had the annual Gisborne/ Trentham Challenge. It was a terrific day with 42 players representing the two clubs. Gisborne came out victorious and I’m sure it will be again hotly contested next year when Gisborne visits Trentham.

Over the past five Mondays Gisborne ladies have also been involved with the North Western Interclub Match Play competition, playing against teams from Goonawarra, Medway, Northern, Sunshine and Whittlesea. After a very good third last year, Gisborne this year were undefeated and so won the overall trophy, a fantastic effort.

The Gisborne ladies were ably captained by Karen Dillon and the players were Emma Brown, Betty Glover, Marlene Hodges, Simone Morrison, Maryanne O’Connell, Judy Silver, Rhyll Trewhella and Judy Trimble. Again the Gisborne ladies will go anywhere for a game of golf and member Lorraine Barrow won a golden putter at Warracknabeal.

Aspiring young athletes and local sporting teams have the chance to achieve their dreams with help from the Local Sporting Champions program. Member for McEwen, Rob Mitchell, says there is still time for young athletes and sporting teams to apply for funding.

The grants help pay for

things such as travel, uniforms, accommodation or equipment to participate in a championship.

The grants are $500 for individuals and $3000 for teams.

Be part of backyard bird count Macedon Ranges Shire Council invites residents and community groups to get involved in Birdlife Australia’s inaugural Aussie Backyard Bird Count in National Bird Week (October 20-26).

Anyone can take part in the count, which only takes 20 minutes and will provide information about the health of local bird populations and our environment. It will also assist in examining the impact of pest species such as Indian mynas.

New Gisborne Juniors fight their way to finals

The Flyfisher’s talk The August talk to the Calder Fly Fishing Club was given by Andrew Fuller from The Flyfisher shop in Melbourne.

Andrew spoke about his travels to distant fly fishing locations and about the newer equipment available to fly fishers. He emphasised the essentials for a successful trip such as the importance of planning, taking backup equipment and having insurance for possible fly fishing accidents.

Talking about gear, Andrew said that research and innovation had resulted in significant incremental improvements in fly rod construction enabling better control and increased catches.

However, with good affordable rods available, the sport did not need to be expensive, especially for beginners.

After Andrew’s talk, one of our beginners’ fly tying course instructors, Ian Scott, made a presentation to each course attendee of six of his personally tied flies – examples of the flies tied on the course.

The club’s latest planned outing was a saltwater trip to the Geelong area towards the end of September (too late to get a report into the Gazette for this month – see next month’s report.)

New Gisborne Tennis Club was thrilled to have so many of its junior members representing the club in the MRTA’s Winter Competition.

Despite the cold and wet conditions, we saw our junior teams competing in the various divisions on both Friday nights and Saturday mornings with enthusiasm and passion for the game.

The teams’ extra efforts and outstanding team spirit saw three of the six junior teams compete in the winter grand finals recently.

The club was exceptionally proud of all the finalists as all did very well. Both the B2 and C1 teams were the Premiers for the season while the other C1 team’s final finished with a draw and they ended as runners-up based on the number of sets won.

Spring has sprung at Macedon Tennis Club... ...so get your racquet restrung, re-hung, bought or borrowed. Wow! Spring is screaming vibrant colours and warm messages, beckoning us to pick up our racquets and get down to the Macedon courts which look a treat in the sunshine. Our club room refurbishment is all but finished and looks very fresh and bright. We have had some glorious weather recently which is truly inspiring.

(We will keep quiet about the biblical thunderstorm we also experienced!)

We had five junior teams in the semifinals of the winter comp last month.

One team, C3, made it through to the

Grand Final. Well done, kids! Unfortunately B1, B2, C1 Black and D were unsuccessful on the score sheet but played terrific tennis all season getting them a berth in the finals.

The Saturday Open Mixed has had similar success with Section 1, 2 and 3 all through to the Grand Finals. Go Mighty Macedon!

The summer comp for Saturday Open starts on October 11. Tuesday Ladies, Thursday night open and Monday social all continue to play strong tennis with a good-humoured spirit.

Suspense and wonder for film society What would it be like if you had no idea where you came from?

Just living day to day in a school where the outside world is an alien place? Such are the lives of three young people in the film screened in September by the Macedon Ranges Film Society.

Never Let Me Go, based on a novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, explores just this idea. In October, the Macedon Ranges Film Society, in its aim to present a broad genre of films to members, will screen Bill Cunningham’s New York, a 2010 documentary that chronicles the obsessive interest of this 80-yearold New York Times photographer who has been inventively recording fashion trends and highsociety charity soirees.

The film reaches historical heights shown through the lens of this man’s camera.

The Macedon Ranges Film Society meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 7pm in the Woodend Community Centre.

100 years since WW1 Laine sits with two of the Hastie family’s exhibits.

Hairy locals a special feature at Melbourne Show The Hastie family from South Gisborne exhibited their Highland cattle at the Royal Melbourne Show last month for the 15th year.

But this year was very special – the Highlands were the feature breed and a judge from Scotland who runs the Queen of England’s own herd of Highland cattle at Balmoral Castle was flown in.

The Hastie daughters, Ashlyn (14) and Laine (10) are very involved with the cattle. The family has bred these cattle for 18 years and import and export genetics from Scotland, New Zealand and North America. They have one of the largest herds of this rare breed in Australia.

Former Gisborne resident AUSTIN VAN GRONINGEN has been travelling in Europe. Here he writes of WWI and the commemorative events taking place this year.

AS the 100-year anniversary since the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli approaches in 2015, Europe is commemorating the centenary of the beginning of the First World War this year.

In Austria, Germany, Belgium, France and the UK, events were held throughout August in sombre remembrance of the Great War. The first such event took place in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. On June 28, the city remembered the centenary of the shooting of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. Seen by many as the catalyst to the outbreak of war one month later, the centenary was marked by a special historical exhibit and a free public concert for peace.

Back in 1914, the Austro-Hungarians were eager to assert their control over the Balkans after Ferdinand’s assassination. They blamed Serbia, heightening existing tensions. On July 28 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on

Serbia. (On July 28 this year, Vienna hosted a number of innovative historic and art museum events in remembrance of the event.)

Within a week of the Austro-Hungarian declaration, much of the world was at war. Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary, Germany declared war on Russia, France declared war on Germany, Germany declared war on Belgium and then the British empire declared war on Germany. Britain’s entry into the war on August 4 drew Australia into the conflict.

Throughout Belgium, bells rang out in unison at midday on August 4 2014 to remember the hour of the German invasion. In Berlin, prayers were held across the city in a call for peaceful resolution to current conflicts.

News reports in Belgium and Britain are filled daily with big-picture war coverage and stories of daily life during the struggle. All agree that such an atrocity cannot be repeated.

One hundred years on from the outbreak of war in Europe marks a pertinent time to remember those who fell in the service of their nations and the present survivors of all wars in the hope that a greater understanding of war might promote peace.

You can make a child’s Christmas one to remember by packing a shoe-box containing Christmas gifts for needy children overseas.

As the soccer season comes to an end, Bullengarook Rangers FC is proud to report another successful year. Under the leadership of head coach Lewis Gourlay, both our Under 12s and our Under 8s have developed a reputation of individual skill combined with collaborative teamwork, building on the strong foundations of the club’s inaugural year.

The Under 12s finished second on the ladder out of 15 teams.

Dedication throughout the winter months, consistency and commitment was exhibited by coaches, players and parents alike.

Likewise, our Under 8s mixed team showed fantastic results for the season, where participation and enjoyment was the focus.

Scouts go scuba-diving

Guides prepare tasty meal

Ask any Scout what the best thing about scouts is and they’ll say getting the chance to try different things that they wouldn’t normally experience. That is exactly what around 40 Scouts and Venturers from the Macedon Ranges and surrounds did in late July.

We had a safety talk followed by a practical session in the pool. We all learned a lot and got to experience what Scuba diving is like in the safety of a pool environment.

Many scouts said they would be interested in taking the next step which is the PADI Diving Course. It is unreal to get to try these things through Scouts.

Scouts is also great for meeting new people and making new friends that share the same interests as you. That day I met lots of people who would be joining me in Venturers and who could come with me to the PADI diving course.

All in all it was a great day, I’d encourage anyone who is thinking about joining scouts or trying something out of their comfort zone... to go for it!

Gisborne Girl Guides welcome Coco, Lilu, Lillie and Charli who have joined the group. The unit finished term 3 by creating a meal to share. They chose a teenage-friendly diet of fruit smoothies, pizza and chocolate slice.

Each Patrol had to devise a shopping list and organise the cooking. Tasting of their menu was the best part of the night with the challenge being the cleaning.

Michelle and Charlotte attended the State camp in the school holidays and we look forward to their report. The Guides are also looking forward to a busy term 4 Debbie Fleming when we can undertake outdoor challenges. Girl Guides meet on Thursdays 5-6.30pm in the Howey Street hall.

Gisborne Cubs achieve highest award Six 1st Gisborne Cubs were presented with their Grey Wolf certificates at a District ceremony at Bacchus Marsh last month.

The Grey Wolf award is the highest Cub Scout award and takes a few years to attain. One of the toughest tasks the cubs need to undertake is to organise and lead a two-hour hike for members of their pack. In addition, there is regular badge work and there are competency tasks that the cubs need to achieve.

The Gisborne Cubs were among 70 in the Lerderderg region and only 450 in Victoria who attained their Grey Wolf Badge. All the boys have now moved into Scouts at 1st Gisborne.

Cub leaders Karen Eaton and Bernie Stewart said the 1st Gisborne Cubs were hard-working and congratulated them on their success.

PS My Family Matters forum identifies strategies for mental illness emergencies PS My Family Matters held a community forum on this issue on September 10 in Gisborne in acknowledgement of World Suicide Prevention Day. Five expert speakers representing the emergency services, Bendigo Triage, Kyneton Mental Health Services and the Royal Children’s Hospital answered questions from an audience of carers

from the Macedon Ranges and Sunbury.

Topics covered included: What information will the emergency services need if I have to call them out? When should I call 000 and when to call Bendigo Triage? What happens when the ambulance and/or the police arrive at my home? What are the procedures they are required to follow? What are the guidelines as to which hospital they will go to and what say do I have in that decision?

The Macedon Ranges is in a bit of no man’s land being halfway between Bendigo and Melbourne, and the issues surrounding which hospital someone may be taken to and whose authority they are released to is a complication that carers need to be aware of and, where possible, plan for.

September was another busy month with over 160 participants across the shire entering our Start Running program. Everyone will come together in Gisborne for the first milestone of running 5km on Sunday, October 26.

This will be followed by a breakfast at Dixon Field 1 with family and friends being encouraged to come along and help celebrate the achievement.

The AGM will also be held after the run so members please consider committee participation.

Four behavioural policies were adopted which completes a sound structure for the club and aligns us with the Government’s Healthy Sporting Environment status.

Thanks to the support of Cobaw Community Health, another 10 of our leaders were trained in first aid as part of our safety strategy.

Many of our runners are targeting fun runs with participation in the Coburg Harriers fun run, planning the Melbourne Marathon festival and a recent good time at Anglesea as part of the Solomon Trail series.

We are investigating a Parkrun event at Gisborne.

Our guest speaker will be Avril Mitchell.

Avril is a member of the AIGS and a former convenor of their Welsh Special Interest Lyn Hall Group. She grew up in Wales where her father’s ancestors had lived. People with Welsh ancestry often find it hard to trace their family history so we are really looking forward to Avril’s presentation.

Award for local chiropractor Recently Brett Jarosz of the Gisborne Chiropractic Clinic was awarded the 2014 Clinical Excellence Award from the AAFN (Australasian Academy of Functional Neurology) for “Excellence in the field of Chiropractic Neuro-rehabilitiation”.

When AAFN president Dr Carlo Rinaudo presented the Award, he cited Dr Jarosz’s continued major contribution to teaching, research and clinical practice. This was especially for teaching neuroscience at the post- Brett with the latest award. graduate level.

Brett is particularly interested in balance and vestibular rehabilitation in post-concussive syndrome and after other sporting type injuries.

Gisborne Bushwalking Club Gisborne Bushwalking Club offers day walks on Wednesdays and weekends during the year. The dates are published well in advance with a description of each walk so you can choose and plan ahead.

Two or three “weekends away” are offered each year and these typically involve cabin accommodation in scenic areas. Recently we had a weekend staying at Boort and walking in nearby National Parks. Next month a weekend is planned in the Strathbogie region.

I am sure most local residents have already checked out the new-look Macedon railway station complete with a resplendent makeover with Melanie Fattore provided by a band of merry helpers in late August. The bulk of the groundwork was graciously donated by local landscaping guru Scott O’Brien, while Ben Bush, Grant Smitten and Michiel Mees crafted the stylish new signage. It now makes for a wonderful rail entrance to our glorious town.

Benevolence stretches a long way in our small town, and another person who should be congratulated is Samara Hodson. On October 12 she will walk from Macedon to Melbourne to raise money for Down Syndrome Australia.

Things have been busy down at Macedon Primary School with plans for a dry creek bed well under way. It should be finished in time for a change in weather and an opportunity for the children to get outside and enjoy this wonderful resource.

Finally, congratulations to the Macedon Football Club’s Under 18 team which made it all the way to this season’s Riddell District Football League grand final, where it went down to Rupertswood. Take care, and enjoy all the botanical splendour that spring presents to Macedon.

Special guest Peter Russell-Clarke and his wife Jan with ‘Captain’ Graeme Millar and Elaine Millar at Gisborne’s naval-themed Anglican Church Spring Fair on September 6.

Local cricketer to captain Aust team Local cricketer Patrick McKenna has been selected as captain for the Australian U19 tour to Sri Lanka next month.

McKenna, a left-hand top order batsman, hails from Gisborne and last season rode a wave of success as he cracked it in the Carlton Cricket Club Premier First XI. McKenna captained the Central Highlands U18 Boys squad in the Victorian Bushrangers State Championships, making it to the semi-finals on the back of a record-breaking week for McKenna.

Scoring 142 in round 1 against the North West Wizards was the highest ever individual score by a Central Highlands U18 player and in topping 324 runs for the State Championships, just shy of the all-time Championship record but the highest run tally by a Central Highlands U18 player.

Pat captained the Victorian U19 team in the U19 National Championships and had scores of 86 against NSW and 51 against WA. He was then selected by Cricket Australia to attend the U18 National Talent Camp in Brisbane at the National Cricket Centre in April.

A garden finds its station Macedon Railway Station’s new community garden was officially opened on Sunday September 14 bringing to fruition two years of planning and hard work by the Macedon Community Group led by Mandi Mees.

Gisborne Probus News Following a highly successful trip to Norfolk Island, members have been enjoying several outings and theatre performances, including Les Miserables and The King and I, which both proved to be outstanding productions.

Coming activities include The Last Confession at the Comedy Theatre, and outings to Queenscliff, Como House, and the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance.

Activities for 2015 which have already been planned include a Tasmanian tour and two theatre productions: The Lion King and Strictly Ballroom. Thanks to our organisers Audrey and Wray.

Op Shop Jottings

Brigid’s Cross Recently we celebrated the exaltation of the holy cross. During the time of Jesus, death by crucifixion was the most shameful and horrifying death that could be experienced. As Christianity spread throughout the world, the cross was embraced by different cultures, bringing forth many versions of this symbol.

Our own Brigid’s cross is usually made from rushes or straw.

It comprises a woven square in the centre and four radials tied at the ends.

Brigid and her cross are linked together by a story about her weaving this form of cross at the death bed of either her father or a pagan lord.

It was believed that Brigid attended a dying chieftain from the neighbourhood of Kildare. When Brigid arrived the chieftain lay fevered and raving.

The dirt floor was spread with rushes and Brigid started to weave them into a cross.

The sick man asked what she was doing. Brigid began to explain the cross, and as she talked, his delirium quieted and he questioned her with growing interest. Legend has it that through her weaving he converted and was baptised at the point of death.

Since then the cross of rushes in Ireland has been associated with Brigid.

Matt with his wife Rachel, children Lachlan, Elizabeth and Alexandra and members of his extended family.

Matt ordained at Presbyterian Church On Saturday August 23rd the congregation celebrated a landmark occasion with the ordination and induction of Matthew Tegart as the minister of the Gisborne Presbyterian Church.

The ceremony was conducted

by Rev Phil Court, the Moderator

of the Presbytery of Melbourne West.

In attendance were members of the Gisborne church, representatives of the Presbyterian church of Victoria and many friends who celebrated this special occasion with Matt and his family.

Spring is certainly in the air! Many households have done their spring cleanout and have offered us their surplus toys, clothes and books.

We have a good range of all these items in our shop.

The Spring Fair on Saturday September 6 was a great success.

Peter Russell-Clarke and his wife Jan attended and presented us with one of his paintings.

Since the Spring Fair, we have also received some furniture items for sale at our shop. Please enquire at the counter to view these items.

Our parish has another Op Shop in Riddells Creek called Charity’s Secret which is opposite Riddell Country Practice. This is also a well-stocked shop and their opening hours are Thursday and Friday 10am4pm and Saturday 10am-1pm.

Our volunteer this month is a long time resident of Gisborne and a Kath Vilips valued member of our team - Kath Vilips.

Community Garden project Saturday, September 6 was a special day for the New Gisborne Community Garden with “Spring into Gardening” presented by Vasili of TV and radio fame.

Western Water and Macedon Ranges Shire Council sponsored this sustainable gardening event, which more than 200 people attended. A delicious morning tea and lunch was provided by 1st New Gisborne Scouts and Cubs, as a fundraising effort. The bratwurst sausages and baked potatoes were in great demand.

The Community Garden, next to the church, was launched at this event and more than 30 people from the local area indicated they would like to be involved.

The first Community Garden meeting was held on September 20 as a “getting to know you” opportunity and to plan out how we should proceed with the management of the garden.

On November 1 and 2, a woodfired oven workshop, where the skills of building an oven will be taught, will be held. The fee for the two days is $200.

100 Years Ago From the pages of the old Gisborne Gazette October 1914 The Late Delivery – There was a good deal of disappointment felt in Gisborne on Saturday night, when it was found there was to be no late delivery at the post office, many waiting until the lights had been extinguished. This delivery is, of course, an act of grace, and the people of Gisborne will be glad to learn that Miss Cleary’s holiday only lasts for three weeks. They will also be the more appreciative of her kindness in giving out the letters.

Water Trust – The ordinary meeting of the Gisborne Water Trust was held on Tuesday. It was resolved that the secretary notify all persons to have meters affixed, and in the event of their not complying, the water is to be cut off. The rate will be 1s per 1000 up to 20,000.

This means that the ratepayer under the rate of £1 is entitled to 20,000 gallons without any extra charge.

If he uses over that amount, he pays 1s 6d for every 1000 gallons.

Gisborne Methodist Church Anniversary Service – There was a large attendance when a Britannia social was held in the church, which was beautifully decorated with flags and flowers. Mr. Hollis said he remembered when the church was opened in 1868 or 1869, by the Rev. P.R.E. Usher. Gisborne was then worked from the Kyneton circuit. The church, he continued, cost £120.

Riot at New Gisborne – On Tuesday, something very like a riot broke out at New Gisborne, the parties being four Russian-Finns, who got out of the express train from Melbourne, and went over to the hotel. While there, they had a disagreement which ended in hostilities. It was rumoured that half the party were Germans, but this was not correct. Anyhow they fought up and down the street, which was in nearly total darkness. The inhabitants of the peaceable little town were naturally alarmed, and telephone messages for assistance were sent to the Gisborne, Macedon and Riddell police stations. Shortly after 10 p.m., Const.

Culhane from Riddell, arrived on the scene and found the riot was practically over. One of the men was greatly knocked about; it is said that he suffered injury through running against a tree in the dark. As the language used was mostly Russian, the cause of the quarrel could not be ascertained. The men, who were well clad, were evidently from a ship at Melbourne.

Gisborne Old Boys Association – The proposal for the erection of tablets has been considered and approved by the joint committees, and in January, a tablet in honor of Henry Howey, the first white settler in the district, to be erected at the corner of Hamilton and Aitken streets, will, at the request of the Gisborne committee, be unveiled by Dr. O’Donnell. It has been decided to invite several members of Parliament and other notables to attend this interesting historical ceremony, and at the request of the Melbourne branch, all the children in the shire will be invited and entertained by the members. The Gisborne branch will provide the pedestal; the tablet, which is estimated to cost £10, will be provided by the Melbourne branch.

Letter to the Editor – “New Gisborne in Darkness” I, along with many other ratepayers of New Gisborne, protest greatly against the action of the shire council in depriving us of the lighting of our little town. The want of light in our narrow main street is a serious source of danger to traffic on dark nights; to churchgoers the want is greatly felt. On Sunday night last, people had to carry lanterns to prevent falling over horses and cows. Surely we are being treated most unfairly.

Gisborne Singers present Mozart The Singers are well into their preparation for singing the much-loved oratorio Mozart’s Requiem.

Composed on his deathbed, Mozart’s Requiem for choir, soloists and orchestra is one of the most moving of Mozart’s sacred works.

The program will also include the sublime Laudate Dominum, the beautiful Agnus Dei

by Samuel Barber plus Psalm 100 by Heinrich Schutz.

Performances will be supported by professional soloists: Soprano – Christina Russo, Alto – Kristen Leich, Tenor – Thomas Dalton, Bass – Manfred Pohlenz with a professional orchestra.
