President’s Paragraph Following is the text of Dr. Groves’ Convocation Address: August 28, 2017
W
elcome to Oak Hill Academy, the little boarding school on “The Hill,” situated (proudly!) above the unincorporated town with the strange name—Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. Today with this Convocation Ceremony we begin officially our 139th year. The Oak Hill Academy family is a substantial community, woven together over centuries; like the Red Oak trees lining our walkways and driveways, our school is literally 100+ years old. That means our school is at least ten years older than me … and four seniors put together! Our theme for this year is “Piece of the Puzzle,’ as in everyone here is a piece of the puzzle, everyone has a role to play. I encourage you, take pride at being a part of such an historic puzzle. Yes, famous people you have likely seen on national television have indeed walked this campus, but know that they have done so alongside and even in the shadows of other less-famous superstars. People like Marge and Hal Eaton, who served here for 30+ years (Rev. Eaton was the chaplain and campus minister); after 71 years of marriage, Marge and Hal died this past summer, only three days apart. OHA legends like Ed and Carolyn Patton, retired President of Hill Academy and his wife who came to this community fifty years ago this week; you will get to meet and sit beside Ed and Carolyn in church on Sundays. We have OHA legends on campus routinely: Laura Bryant, who tirelessly volunteers her curating skills to document our generations of history in the Ussery Archives; Coach Steve Smith, who just keeps cranking out wins and great players; Rhonda and Steve Bowen, OHA alums like Mike Rodgers and Chris Hill. These fine folks are all significant, invaluable pieces of the decades-long OHA Puzzle. In fact, all current employees—teachers, residential life staff, maintenance, housekeeping, dining hall staff, members of the board, administrators—all pieces of the same great puzzle. And, yet, the most important piece of this puzzle I have yet to name … And that piece is: You—you, the members of the student body. You have arrived here from around the globe. Know that here you shall be challenged to be your best; you shall be encouraged, nudged, and cajoled to new levels of success. Over the course of this year I hope you will learn to value what we value: Community, Moral Courage, Responsibility, and Transformation. And through it all, through all of
the structure and lessons and homework, you will be reminded often that we care for you—that you are children of God, loved by God, created in the image of God. So, on behalf of the faculty and staff and board of trustees, and in honor and memory of the so very many folks who have made this school possible for so many years … I welcome you here where everyone is a piece of the puzzle—I welcome you to Oak Hill Academy. School
On Monday morning, August 28th, the original school bell chimed as Oak Hill Academy officially began its 139th academic year. With this new beginning comes the anticipation of a successful year by students and faculty alike. This year our diverse group of students comes to us from 23 states and 16 foreign countries. All have come together to create our unique community on “The Hill where we strive to provide a quality education for all who come our way. Amid all of the hustle and bustle of unpacking, finding room assignments, getting class schedules, and picking up supplies and uniforms a new sense of independence is discovered; new friendships are created; old friendships are rekindled; and another chapter in the history of the school is written. The entire Oak Hill Academy faculty and staff welcomes our students to campus and looks forward to another successful year.

He left his job as an engineer in 2001 to pursue a career in education. Mr. Duranko taught math, astronomy, and physics at Salem High School in New Hampshire for 16 years before coming to Oak Hill. He also coached boy’s tennis for 10 years. Mr. Duranko enjoys playing tennis, riding bikes, astronomy, watching movies with his wife, reading, and playing with his two dogs. He and Gail have two daughters, Jill and Megan.
Ms. Gena Hall Ms. Hall is returning to Oak Hill as a resident manager in Hough Dormitory, a position she held at the school 12 years ago. During her time away from the school, she worked for the Blue Ridge Job Corps as a career counselor, case manager, and ACT college coordinator. All of these positions centered around assisting students. Originally from Marion, Virginia, Ms. Hall is close with her family and spends time with them often. She enjoys traveling, animals, cooking, reading autobiographies and documentaries, and visiting New York City. Ms. Hall is excited for the opportunity to return to OHA. She looks forward to meeting the students and getting reacquainted with the staff. She says both make it a place like no other.
Mr. Ken Hunnewell Having taught at Oak Hill during the 2013-2014 school year, Mr. Hunnewell has returned as a science and math teacher. Mr. Hunnewell received his bachelor’s degree in geology from Rutgers University and worked in the construction industry as a project manager and estimator until 2007. He then decided to pursue a career in education and received his master’s degree in physics education from Kennesaw State University. He has worked as a science teacher since 2010. Mr. Hunnewell enjoys gardening, skiing, stargazing, cartooning, and writing science fiction stories. He and wife Joan have two daughters, Erin, a recent University of Georgia graduate, and Tara, a University of Georgia student.
Mrs. Anita Perkins Mrs. Perkins joins Oak Hill Academy as a school nurse. Mrs. Perkins graduated from the Twin County School of Practical Nursing and has worked as a nurse for 30 years. She and her husband Denny have two children: Nick, a wild land firefighter, and Caysee, who is enrolled in paramedic school. Some of Mrs. Perkins’ hobbies include hiking, cooking, and reading. She also volunteers with the Rugby Rescue Squad as an Emergency Medical Technician and enjoys helping them with fundraising events. Mrs. Perkins looks forward to seeing the students when she is on duty.
Mrs. Yvonne Rodgers Mrs. Rodgers, a familiar face on campus, has recently taken on a full-time role at OHA as the registrar and academic office administrative assistant. She will also continue in her role as the uniform manager. No stranger to “The Hill,” Mrs. Rodgers has been on campus for 14 years as a faculty spouse and parent of two alumni. Mrs. Rodgers and her husband Mike (OHA Director of Admission) are the parents of four children, Khelan, Alex, Mikey, and Max. She is very happy to be more involved in the student’s experience at Oak Hill Academy and to be part of a team that she already considers friends.
Hal & Marge Eaton Remembered After more than 70 years of marriage, Rev. Hal & Mrs. Marge Eaton passed away within two days of each other – Marge on July 13, 2017, and Hal on July 15, 2017. The Eatons met while attending Southwest Baptist Junior College in Missouri and both went on to attend William Jewell College. Mrs. Eaton earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and Rev. Eaton continued his education for the ministry at Central Baptist Theological Seminary. Hal started preaching at age 19 and spent more than 20 years as a Navy Chaplain. In 1971, he became the religion teacher and chaplain at Oak Hill and the pastor of Young’s Chapel Baptist Church. He served in these roles for 21 years. After their second retirement, the Eatons remained in Mouth of Wilson and were faithful members of Young’s Chapel. Hal enjoyed singing, reading, playing the guitar and piano, golf, canoeing, and fishing. In 2014, he published the book Moses, the Ten Commandments, and Me. Marge took much pride in caring for her home and family and loved supporting missions. She enjoyed playing the piano, singing, helping Hal with the church youth group, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and taking part in the activities of the church. The Eatons were also loyal and generous supporters of Oak Hill. Their continued interest in the Academy prompted them to establish the Hal and Marjorie Eaton Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2014. Their family suggested that memorials in Rev. & Mrs. Eaton’s honor be directed to this fund.
Allie Belle Candler Endowed Scholarship Miss Allie Candler passed away on July 25, 2017 at the age of 107 following a life of dedicated Christian service. After her graduation from Moody Bible Institute, Miss Candler worked at churches in numerous states during the 1960’s. She was then called to Grayson County and served faithfully here until her retirement from the Baptist General Association of Virginia. Following her retirement, Miss Candler went back to work with the NAMB and the IMB. She served in Japan as an ESL teacher before returning to Independence, Virginia. Miss Allie lost her sight in 2005 but did not let this deter her. She moved to a retirement community in South Carolina and remained active in local churches. Miss Candler’s family chose to honor her memory by establishing a scholarship in her name. They shared that she loved Oak Hill Academy and spoke often of how proud she was of the students and the faculty. The family believed nothing would please Miss Allie more than to know she made a difference in someone’s life as they pursued their education.
A Gift of Life On July 12, 2016 a team of surgeons removed one of Rev. Doug Turnmire’s kidneys. Moments later another team of surgeons placed the kidney in the body of Mrs. Joy Groves. Over a year later, both “Rev” and Mrs. Groves (Guidance Counselor, aka “The Nice Groves”) are back at work on “The Hill” and both are doing great. The story of this incredible gift represents another unique chapter in the special community at Oak Hill Academy. And, since we all live here together, our students were able to share in the experience first-hand. In fact, the very description of the event needs no amplification: Rev. Turnmire gave one of his kidneys to Mrs. Groves. Wow. Like her three sisters and late father, Mrs. Groves is diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease. She learned of her condition some thirty years ago, but recently her kidney function worsened. A living donor was considered, and four (!) friends/fellow OHA employees offered to Mrs. Groves one of their kidneys. What a testament to the values of our beloved OHA Community. Rev. Turnmire’s kidney was a perfect match, and the life-giving transplant helped Mrs. Groves avoid dialysis and continue as a life-giver herself, counseling and helping others. One year later Rev. Turnmire is hesitant to discuss the “deeply personal” decision to donate his kidney, adding only that “the world needs people like Joy Groves.” For her part, Mrs. Groves “can never say thank you enough” to her friend (and pastor). She says, “I thank God every day for Doug Turnmire.” Rev. Turnmire and Mrs. Groves ... their story is our story. The OHA Community is indeed a special place! July 2016 Mrs. Groves and Rev. Turnmire — home from the hospital three days after surgery.

Alumni Weekend 2017
Another great Alumni Weekend was held July 14-16 with many former students and their families in attendance. This annual event is open free of charge to all alumni and former students and their families who wish to attend. The Welcome Home Reception at the Alumni Campus Store on Friday evening kicked off the weekend. Saturday morning began with the annual alumni meeting led by OHA president Dr. Michael Groves. Class pictures, campus tours led by current students, and lunch in Vaughan Dining Hall followed. The afternoon events began with a brief memorial service to remember alumni who had passed during the previous year. The tolling of the campus bell and singing of the Alma Mater marked this occasion. Our summer school
students then joined the group for an ice cream social. The Lonesome Willow Band provided live bluegrass music throughout the afternoon. The day’s events were capped off with dinner, dancing, a prize wheel, and silent auction at the Mississippi Pavilion in Noonkester Park. The weekend wrapped up on Sunday morning with a continental breakfast in the dining hall and worship service at Young’s Chapel Baptist Church. Our goal is to make this weekend the best it can possibly be for all OHA alumni and former students and their families. If you have never attended or if its been several years since you have been to an Alumni Weekend, please join your classmates and come celebrate with us July 16-17, 2018!

Become Part of the “Over the Hill Alumni” Gang A Great Way to Give Back to Your School! Attention alumni and former students – Are you willing to get a little dirty, sleep in a dorm room, eat in Vaughan Dining Hall, laugh a lot, and sweat a little? If so, give Dr. Groves or Tim Henry a call about becoming part of the “Over the Hill Alumni” Gang. The 2018 work week will be July 9-13!
“Over the Hill Alumni” Gang The 2017 alumni work week was again a great time for all. The “Over the Hill” Gang made their way to campus for a week of work and fun. They completed their usual gardening tasks and refinished the elephant/preacher steps that lead to Hough Dormitory. A special thanks to all of the workers, Don Krauss, Harry and Sarah (Ussery) Sink, Ted Ussery, Mary and Otis Reamy, Jo Ann (Watkins) and Carroll Harvey, Jim Herchenrider and Havelenna, and Lynn Smith Campbell.

$1 Per Year Campaign Update In order to get as many alumni and former students as possible involved in the mission of OHA and listed on our Alumni “Honor Roll” the “$1 Per Year Campaign” was launched in 2011. The “$1 Per Year Campaign” asks alumni and former students to give back to their Alma Mater by donating at least $1 for every year since they graduated from or attended Oak Hill Academy. Our goal for 2017-2018 is to have as many alumni as possible listed in the Alumni Giving section of the “State of the Academy Report” and on our web site. We challenge all former students to give back to your Alma Mater in this easy and affordable way. Thank you to the following alumni and former students who made a contribution to OHA between June 1 – September 28, 2017

Oak Hill Academy Fourth Annual Alumni Homecoming November 11, 2017
HOME C MING O
Oak Hill Academy’s Fourth Annual Homecoming will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2017. The one-day event will be held in conjunction with the home Gold Team basketball game against Bristol Prep. All alumni and former students are invited to participate in the activities. Plans include a campus wide homecoming parade (alumni are encouraged to be creative by making small scale floats or getting together themed marching groups) and pregame tailgating for alumni and current students. Meriwether-Godsey, OHA’s food service, will provide main course selections. Alumni classes or groups may participate by providing a favorite tailgating staple to share. We will have reserved seating at the game for all alumni and their families. Please visit the “Alumni” page of the OHA web site for the complete schedule and to RSVP for the event!
Gold Team News 2017-2018 Season Outlook The Warriors are heading into a new season with
focused minds and fire in their bellies. Oak Hill will play in a dozen different states against the best teams in the country so they’ll need to bring the heat to each and every game. Fortunately, the Warriors are loaded with some great talent to help buoy them through the nation’s toughest high school schedule. Running the point is senior Will Richardson and our presence in the post is senior David McCormack. Senior Guards leading the way are Keldon Johnson and Keyontae Johnson. Other seniors that will play significant minutes and provide the team with depth are Eddy Kayouloud, Maurice Calloo, Jackson Redmon, and Akrum Ahemed. Underclassmen that will fill the stat sheet and help the Warriors achieve their goal of another championship season are juniors Josh Nickelberry and B.J. Mack and sophomores Joshua Hemmings and Darrick Jones, Jr. The Warriors look forward to the challenge of representing Oak Hill Academy in a winning way both at home and on the road.
