APD has suspect in break-ins by Bobbie Jean Sawyer
The main suspect for a series of break-ins in the 78749 zip code in southwest Austin was arrested in Roswell, NM on Friday, February 7. Police believe Gary Whiteis, a 60-year-old transient man with a criminal history, may be linked to about 20 break-ins in the southwest Austin area from July to September last year. Jeffrey Binder, Region 4 District Representative for the Austin Police Department, said the arrest was made possible by the collaborative
efforts of the Austin Police Region 4 Detectives, Austin Police Burglary Detectives, Austin Police Intelligence Unit, Travis County District Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Marshals service. Binder said Austin residents should continue to take preventative measures against further criminal activity. “Although Gary Whiteis is now in police custody, the Austin Police Department encourages all citizens to continue to be observant of suspicious behavior or activity and to not
become complacent,” Binder said. The APD first had contact with Whiteis on August 28th after receiving a call about suspicious behavior. “This contact and identification was ultimately what led to the burSee APD on Gary Whiteis page 26

The 18-acre facility of five baseball and two softball fields, located at U.S. 290 West and Joe Tanner Road, is owned by the Oak Hill Youth Sports Association (OHYSA). The group scrambled to find locations for 750 youngsters to finish the Fall Ball season when the flood forced the fields

This week OHYSA president Stephen Bega gave the Gazette an update: “We have repaired the parking lot, repaired/replaced the fence, made certain areas more accessible and are currently installing new batting cages in the ballpark.” The Round Rock Express and Ryan-Sanders Sports Turf Services See REPAIR on page 27
OHAN to host candidates forum by Bobbie Jean Sawyer
The Oak Hill Association of Neighborhoods (OHAN) will host a candidate forum between the two Democratic candidates for Travis County Judge, Sarah Eckhardt and Andy Brown, at the Feb. 12th monthly meeting at 7 p.m. The forum will be held at the Southwest Family Fellowship Church at 8203 West Hwy. 71. OHAN secretary Rick Perkins said
the forum will focus on southwest Austin issues, such as air quality, water quality, transportation needs, congestion, infrastructure development and student growth in southwest Travis County. Perkins said the forum would be a unique opportunity to ask the candidates about regional issues. “When you’re talking county you’re talking about regional things— things that are outside of the city,”
Perkins said. “Some of the questions I’ve seen people submit—they’re interested in management styles that each one would have for managing the county.” The forum will last about 30 to 40 minutes, Perkins said.
