by Bobbie Jean Sawyer OAK HILL - Neighbors in Circle C North vying to save their limited green space for a pocket park received public support from Mayor Pro Tem Sheryl Cole at a news conference at the intersection of Barstow and Allerton avenues Saturday morning. “The City of Austin is pleased by the collaboration between the neighborhood, the developers and City staff to make this park a reality,” Cole said. The parcel of land at Barstow Avenue and Davis Lane has been envisioned as a future park for years by
residents, but recent planning changes at the city level had the land slated to be developed into a road, extending Barstow Avenue to Davis Lane. Sheryl Cole According to a press release from the office of Sheryl Cole, the City Council is expected to vote on what to do with the land at the June 26 City Council See NEIGHBORS on page 26

voters will select an Austin City Council from 10 geographic single-member districts. This change to geographic representation was approved by voters Nov. 6, 2012, as Proposition 3, commonly referred to as 10-ONE. Under this Charter amendment the Mayor will continue to be elected citywide and 10 other Council members will no longer be elected citywide, but only by voters in the districts in which they live. The City of Austin in partnership with the City’s Ethics Review Commission and the Austin League of Women Voters will also conduct a series of single-member district City Council Candidate Forums for the November 2014 election. The District 8 forum, which comprises most of the area covered by the Oak Hill Gazette, is scheduled for September 16, while the mayoral candidate forum will be held on September 29. In addition to the in person forums video statements from each of the candidates will be posted on the City’s website, austintexas.gov. Additionally, the candidates will respond to a League of Women Voters questionnaire. This information and video statements will be posted on the website in September 2014. More information is available at www.austintexas.gov/10-ONE. New City ordinance resource now available online A complete list of the City of Austin’s Code of Ordinances can now be found at a new, easier to remember link: austintexas.gov/citycode. In addition to ordinance information, users will also find a wide range of criteria manuals from building to transportation. Two Oak Hill ballplayers are competing for Major League All-Star Game appearance By Ann Fowler OAK HILL - Two young Oak Hill ballplayers showed off their major league talent recently in the Major League Baseball (MLB) Pitch, Hit and Run (PHR) competition. Each won their age divisions at a local competition in Oak Hill, in Regional competition at Krieg Field in Austin, and in the team championship held at the Houston Astros’ Minute Maid Park. For Darius Williams, 8, and Abbey Smith, 11, their accomplishment is not a culmination, but a demonstration of skills that will only get better with age. And this competition is not over yet. Brody Roush, 19, founder of Beyond the Bases (see sidebar), which hosted the Oak Hill competition, told the Gazette, “Each of the 30 major league ballparks have held or will hold their own team championship competition in which other winners will be selected. The top three scores from each age group nationwide will advance to compete at the [site of the] 2014 All Stars Game in Minneapolis.” Roush added, “This is important to Oak Hill because two of our kids from right here are ranked nationally in the top 30 out of nearly 700,000 participants. I think it says a lot about how Oak Hill and Beyond the Bases does such a great job providing kids the things they need to excel in our national pastime.” In PHR competition, youngsters vie in four age groups, one for boys and one for girls: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14, with age determined as of July 17, 2014. The young athletes must demonstrate specific skills: • Pitch: athletes emulate Major League pitchers by taking a shot at hitting the MLB Strike Zone. • Hit: young batters swing away from home plate just like big leaguers; they are judged on distance and accuracy. • Run: youths start at second base and head for home to demonstrate Continued on page 31

Beyond the Bases helps kids get in the game By Ann Fowler Beyond the Bases provides baseball and softball equipment to those who can’t afford it. Founder Brody Roush started playing baseball at Oak Hill at the age of 6. In 2009, Brody was helping the Oak Hill Youth Sports Association with tryouts when he realized that the downturn in the economy meant many children didn’t have proper equipment. He said, “I went home, pulled out some bats and gloves in my garage that I wasn’t using, and
gave them to these kids. After talking with some friends, I discovered that other people also had baseball equipment in their garages that could be used to help these children.” And so Beyond the Bases began. Roush explained, “I founded Beyond the Bases at Oak Hill with the objective of helping underprivileged boys and girls play baseball and softball. Our first year, we provided eight kids with equipment and raised about Continued on back page

Simmer down. Simmer down, people. I know very well that it’s been months since I’ve indulged you with a Movie Mashup contest. And I know that you know, based on the influx of cards and letters and e-mails and texts and pokes and tweets and twits and skypes and likes and tags and yelps and yips and things. And you know that I know that you know, because here we are, revving our engines for another go. So you see, I know you know that I know that you know. You know? And furthermore… Let’s start this again. If you recall, what we have here, my fellow intergalactic itinerants, is a collection of famous lines from movies. However, quotes from two different movies have been smushed together to make one confused line. Here’s a for instance: “It’s a Sicilian message. It means Luca Brasi sleeps with McFly.” That there, you see, is a conglomeration of quotes from “The Godfather” and “Back to the Future.” I suppose, then, that the mashed-up movie would be called “Back to the Godfather.” Or something. by Patrick Olson The Southwest Austin community lost an outstanding coach and an exceptional educator when Jason Landers died on June 16th from liver cancer. “He was a man of great character,” said Bowie boys’ basketball coach Celester Collier. “Jason will never be forgotten. I am a better person because I’ve known Jason Landers.” “He would often say ‘life is too short to not give your best effort and live life to the fullest’,” Bowie girls’ basketball coach Vickie Benson added. “He would tell his players to think about the choices they’re making in life. He was a father figure to a lot of girls.” Landers helped Benson by coaching the freshman girls’ basketball team her first year as Bowie’s varsity coach in addition to combining with Collier to coach the boys’ and girls’ golf teams and serving as Bowie’s head volleyball coach for 17 years. Landers also taught a leadership class at Bowie that encouraged students to reach out in the community. He instilled discipline and competitiveness in his players as well as helping guide students successfully in the classroom. “He did well with kids that struggle in math,” Bowie head football coach Jeff Ables noted. “He had success getting the lights to turn on for them. He loved kids and helping kids. He tried to help kids every day.” Following a viewing at Bethany Lutheran Church on Slaughter Lane, Landers was buried in a private ceremony Friday afternoon. On Saturday, a thousand people attended a celebration of life ceremony at the Bowie gym. “People from all different walks of life came together,” Benson recalled of Saturday’s event. “He made a big impact, and he loved the people around him.” Individuals from the Austin Junior Volleyball select team Landers coached and Continued on page 7

Oak Hill VFW Post 4443 news
Public invited to Independence Day Celebration at Oak Hill VFW by Mike Jordan Are you up for a free Independence Day celebration and picnic? Then plan to attend America’s Birthday celebration at the Oak Hill VFW on the 4th of July. VFW Post 4443 is hosting an annual Independence Day celebration for all residents of Oak Hill. The celebration will be at the VFW campus at 7614 Thomas Springs Rd. That’s about midway between Rt. 71 and Circle Drive. Watch for the large VFW sign. Festivities will begin around 10 AM and will continue through the afternoon. There will be complimentary hot dogs, sodas and side dishes. Hotdogs, sausages, hamburgers and buns are provided by the Oak Hill HEB located at the “Y” in Oak Hill. The post veterans will lead a short parade around 11 AM and everyone is invited to participate. Everyone is also encouraged to decorate his or her wheeled transportation—bikes, wagons, wheelchairs, golf carts, or whatever. Cash prizes will be presented for the most original deco-
rations that celebrate our country’s birth. If you have nothing that could be entered in the parade as a float, then decorate yourself—prizes will also be given for the most original personal decorations. Bring your dog or cat and decorate them too. Besides the free picnic, children will enjoy the climbing walls, swings and slides on the playground. Bring your bathing suits and enjoy the pool, as well.
people from Real Life church, which meets in the Bowie gym, spoke at the ceremony. As a reporter, I will miss the generous personality of coach Landers, who once pulled a lawn chair from his SUV for me to sit next to him and to watch a game coached by his wife, Bowie softball coach Cathie Johnson-Landers. When viewing the Dawgs on the diamond during the spring, I would always seek out Jason for thoroughly enjoyable conversation. Consistently amusing to me was the disgusting look Jason would have in reaction to my donning an Atlanta Falcons or an Alabama shirt since he was quite an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and University of Texas Longhorns.

“That’s just terrible,” he would candidly state. Coach Landers’ huge palm engulfed my hand when shaking his hand after interviewing him following a volleyball match. He always thanked me for covering his team. I agree wholeheartedly with Collier who said, “His heart was bigger than anything. He was a big, gentle giant with a great love for people.” Jason is survived by his wife, their three four-year-old girls (Mary Katherine, Amy Elizabeth, Julie Marie), his parents, his brother Jon and family, and stepmom Bonnie. Faith needs a home!
‘Taco Bell Oak’ to be moved soon by Bobbie Jean Sawyer The historic oak tree at the intersection of 290 and William Cannon is finally being moved to its new home—soon. The 130-year-old heritage oak tree, known by locals as the “Taco Bell Tree,” (for the Taco Bell that used to be on that corner) was saved by an outpouring of community support when locals learned that the oak stood in the way of TxDOT’s planned renovations at the intersection. With the help of individual donors and local businesses, the Austin Heritage Tree Foundation raised the $20,000 needed to transplant the tree. The oak will be relocated to Beckett Grove, a line of oak and pecan trees west of the intersection of William Cannon and 290 named for the Beckett family, who owned the former ranch land in the 1870s. Beckett Grove was a popular overnight camping spot for travelers on horseback on their way to Austin,
and local families held picnics and reunions there in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Michael Fossum, executive director of the Austin Heritage Tree Foundation, said the moving crew has started work on the tree transplant. “Dirt has been excavated to allow clearance for the pipes that will be placed under the root ball, and the root ball has been pruned and is in the process of being encapsulated,” Fossum said. Due to the upcoming holiday weekend, the move could take several days, Fossum said. “The move will take place in one to three weeks, due to the July 4th weekend not allowing lane closures,” Fossum said. Fossum said due to traffic control expenses exceeding the initial budget, the foundation needs to raise an additional $5,000 to cover the cost. To donate to the Taco Bell Tree fund: Send a check to the Austin Parks
Foundation, 507 Calles Street, Ste. 116, Austin, TX 78702. Make sure to write “Austin Heritage Tree Foundation- Taco Bell Tree” on the memo line. Call the Austin Parks Foundation at 512-477-1566 ext. 1 to donate by phone. Specify that your donation is for the “Austin Heritage Tree Foundation- Taco Bell Tree.” Donate with a credit card at this link: https://www.austinparks.org/ adopter-donations.html. Click on the Austin Heritage Tree Foundation box. For all donations, email mfossum@ austin.rr.com with the amount and donor’s name and specify that the donation is for the Taco Bell Tree. The Austin Heritage Tree Foundation operates under the Parks Foundation, which manages the tree fund. Donations are tax deductible. For more information visit www. austinheritagetreefoundation.com.
Animal Center still reeling from last week’s storms The Austin Animal Center has more than 1,100 cats and dogs to care for, many of them lost from last week’s storms. The Center has taken in over 400 animals in the past 7 days, and only 132 of them have left the shelter. Anyone who
is missing their pet should come to the Austin Animal Center to look for their pet, and check the Center’s website regularly. The Center also tweets every 30 minutes with information about stray animals that have just come into the shelter; follow @

This is Faith, she is very beautiful, she was found crawling away on the side of the highway with two broken front legs. She was in the hospital for over two months, but she recovered fully and is doing very well. Her one leg is a little bit crooked but is healed completely, and she runs and functions on it 100%. She is very sweet with people and kids, and she welcomes everyone. She will get along with a submissive male dog only— she has been with an abuse case sent from animal control and she protected him and was very good to him, and they even slept in the same Igloo. Faith is ready for her own family and home. She is well behaved in the house, and well behaved in general as she is about 4 or 5 years old. She would do well in a home with adults and very little commotion as she has probably had a life full of turmoil. She is current on her vaccines, HW negative, spayed and microchipped. She is an American Staffordshire Terrier, which means she is larger in size than the typical Staffordshire Terrier, which is typically about 40 to 55 pounds. She is a beautiful dog that needs a really good stable home. Serious inquiries only.

Unity Church of Austin announces Oak Hill UMC earns a new permanent senior minister mention in Huff Post Unity Church of Austin is proud to announce the arrival of its new permanent senior minister from Olympia, Washington, Rev. Anna J. Shouse, M.A., PhD. Rev. Shouse was ordained a Unity minister in 1995 and has successfully served four ministries. She holds a Ph.D. in Communication and Human Relations from the University of Kansas and before entering ministry was a university faculty member in this field. Rev. Shouse also holds an M.A. in Addiction Counseling from the Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies. According to Rev. Shouse, “my degree from Hazelden deepens my background and skill in working with people and relationship systems.” She is also certified by the Lom-
bard Mennonite Peace Center to use Healthy Congregations approaches in working with churches. Rev. Shouse states that, “this is a very effective, common-sense, spiritually principled way to assist congregations in understanding how they function, how to increase participation and leadership skills, and how they may go forward with love and vibrancy.” Unity Church of Austin was founded by Unity pioneer, Catherine Ponder, and is located at 5501 Hwy. 290 West. The Church moved to its current location from its former Del Curto site. South Austin residents may recognize the building as the old Pancho’s restaurant. Several years ago, the building was completely redesigned and Church offices were constructed.
Services are held at 11:00 Sunday mornings. Classes and programs are available and can be viewed at the Church website www.unitychurchaustin.org , on Facebook at Unity Church Austin, or by calling (512) 892-3000. - submitted

Oak Hill United Methodist Church made the Huffington Post in a very positive story about faith-based communities working to make a difference. The Huffington Post article “Yes, Religion Can Still Be A Force For Good In The World,” by Antonia Blumberg and Yasmine Hafiz, lists 100 examples of how faith-based groups are doing good in the world today. The list begins with the statement: “Religion has made its way into many global conflicts, and there is no doubt that religion can be divisive and cause harm. That said, countless religious groups, congregations and individuals around the world offer daily demonstrations that faith can offer deep spiritual wisdom, be a major vehicle for service to the world and promote peace.” “Here are 100 examples of how faith-based groups are doing good in the world today in no particular order. Many of them we found through #ReligionDoingGood.”
The story about Oak Hill UMC reads: “Supporting American Troops In unique Ways Oak Hill United Methodist Church in Austin, TX runs many community-centered ministries that range from building houses to making hospital visits to operating a community garden. One unique ministry -- the HUGS Project -- brings female congregants together to make neck coolers and other items to send to the military overseas.” The HUGS Project at Oak Hill is working hard on behalf of our troops in the Mid- east. The temperature is heating up and troopers are facing unbearable heat in the summer months, therefore, the HUGS Project team is still making the cooling neckties aka “hugs” for the troops. The cooling ties help lower the body tempera- ture up to 5 degrees of the person wearing the tie and in temperatures of 120 degrees and Continued on next page

Neighbors find City support for new park Continued from p. 1 Meeting. Residents say the park will provide much needed amenities to the neighborhood and provide a safer walk to school for students attending Gorzycki. Circle C North resident Claudia Corum has been working alongside neighbors to gain support for the park, gathering over 1,000 signatures through an online petition
and a hard copy petition circulated around the neighborhood. Corum said Saturday’s news conference was representative of the neighborhood desire for a park. “We’re very happy with it,” Corum said. “There were a lot of nice people that showed up (with) strollers and lots of dogs and everybody was very pleased with what the Homeowners Association has done about supporting us on this.”

shelter. Sadly, many of these pets never find their way back home. “It never ceases to amaze me,” says Abigail Smith, Chief Animal Services Officer, “that so many healthy, well cared for pets arrive here and are never reclaimed. They are well groomed, and they have nice collars, but no id tag or microchip.” The Austin Animal Center offers free microchips and tags to community members. The Center is also running a summer adoption special with $25 adoptions that include spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchip, collar and ID tag. The special will run through Sept. 1, 2014.

Oak Hill UMC earns a mention in Huffington Post for HUGS project Continued from p. 25 higher this is a significant body cooling device. The HUGS team has been meeting each week to make these ties and in April we mailed 600 cool ties to service personnel overseas. To participate in this effort you can make a mon- etary donation to the Oak Hill UMW and specify it for the HUGS Project. If you would like to help us with making these ties, we meet each Thursday in the Adult Education Building in room 203 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Bring a brown
bag lunch if you can stay the entire time or come during these hours if you can only stay for an hour or two. Our mission is to give a “HUG” to every American serving overseas. Contact Sandy Wilkerson at swilk27@ yahoo.com for more information or go to http://www. thehugsproject.com/. Oak HIll UMC “Where Everyone Is A Minister” Oak Hill United Methodist Church is on Highway 290, about a mile west of the “Y”, where it splits from Highway 71, just across from the Pinnacle

Oak Hill UMC offers many ministries, including local, regional and worldwide mission teams, Caring and Fellowship Ministries, the Deaf Ministry, a Kairos Prison Ministry, adult, youth and children’s Sunday School and Bible study classes, varied musical groups, women’s and men’s groups, a youth group, a wonderful preschool, and a fun Children’s Ministry. Options narrow for 290 project Continued from p. 1 includes U.S. 290 mainlanes north of the creek with direct connector ramps, were selected by a team of engineers out of a total of eight mobility concepts. The “no-build” option, which relies solely on the continuous flow intersections currently being installed and no additional construction, will also advance to the next level of evaluation. Rick L’Amie, manager of communications for the Mobility Authority, said each concept was measured on the same standards, such as operational efficiency, reduced travel time, multimodal travel options, reduced crashes and emergency vehicle access. “After we received input from the community based on the original eight concepts, we took that feedback and measured it against the overall project purpose and need,” L’Amie said. “The questions are asked: Will this particular concept meet this purpose and need?” L’Amie said while concepts A and C were selected to move on to the next phase of evaluation, other alternatives may be chosen if the community feedback warrants further assessment. “It’s very much a work in progress,” L’Amie said. “If it does meet the regional transportation needs along with the local desires, there’s a chance a concept could move forward.” L’Amie said a final decision wouldn’t be made until the final public hearing, expected to occur in 2015. Wade Strong, a project planner with the Rodriguez Transportation Group, said the project team would continue to work on the concepts to form a clearer picture of what each concept would look like if developed. “We’re going to get into looking at the details of these a lot more than what we have and really refine them and be able to (give everybody) a much better idea of what the costs are,” Strong said. “Right now it’s still so conceptual it’s really hard.” Van Short, who lives between Oak Hill and Dripping Springs, said he prefers Concept C because of its high capacity. “It maintains flow of traffic and yet allows through traffic, which is very important because there’s a lot of populations to the west,” Short said. Short said the massive increase in populations to the west of Oak Hill Continued on next page

CTRMA gives OHAN an update on traffic projects by Bobbie Jean Sawyer Mario Espinoza and Melissa Hurst of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority attended the Oak Hill Association of Neighborhoods monthly meeting to update the community on current projects in the works: SH 45 Southwest, a proposed 3.6 mile roadway connecting MoPac to 1626, and intersection improvements at Slaughter Lane and La Crosse Avenue. SH 45 Southwest Project status: “Lots of progress has been made,”
Espinoza said. “We’ve had several open houses and public meetings on that project. We are now pretty much coming to a close, if you can believe that, in regards to the public outreach portion of it. It comes to a close later this summer when we actually conduct a public hearing.” Espinoza said the public hearing will sum up all of the environmental and social impacts of the project. How will it be paid for? “Most local contribution will be when we go to the bond market, Continued on next page

Options narrow for 290 project Continued from p. 29 has created an immediate need for traffic flow improvement on 290. “It’s a U.S. highway. It’s past due for improvements,” Short said. Angie Rubottom, a southern Travis County resident, said she preferred a concept not selected for advancement: Concept F, an alternative created through a collaboration with Fix 290, a grassroots community organization dedicated to creating a parkway with a limited concrete footprint. Rubottom said she would prefer a solution that doesn’t include building frontage roads. “I’m concerned about the expense of all that cement with the frontage roads and of course I can’t help but
wonder if some of that is being driven by the financing question— about whether or not Alternative F could be tolled in the way that they think of tolling,” Rubottom said. Despite her reservations, Rubottom said she remains positive about the direction the project is heading. “I think everybody had kind of gotten their heads around the idea that this is the gateway to the Hill Country and the gateway from the Hill Country to the Texas State Capital, and we really need to consider the aesthetics of it and what this looks like,” Rubottom said. Rubottom said, above all, she would like to see a parkway solution that maintains the natural beauty and
character of Oak Hill. “I like the idea that people are talking about trying to maintain a park-like atmosphere around Williamson Creek,” Rubottom said. “The devil’s in the details, but I’m very glad they’ve got landscape architect expertise on board because I think those guys, if listened to, could really save some money in addition to beautification. I think they have a skill set that’s been missing in a lot of projects.” A virtual open house for the Oak Hill Parkway project is available at oakhillparkway.com. It stays within the environmental district.” MoPac Intersections:
Hurst said the Mobility Authority’s current recommendation is to take the mainlanes of MoPac underneath Slaughter Lane and La Crosse Avenue. The organization will hold a community meeting on the improvements this summer. “This type of document doesn’t require a public hearing, but we definitely know how important these intersections are to the communities there at MoPac, especially for our Circle C friends,” Hurst said. “So we’re going to come back to them and make sure we walk everybody through the project.”

speed at running the bases. Darius Williams Oak Hill knew Darius Williams loved baseball. Back in November he was recognized in the Gazette for donating his own money— piggy bank and all—to help repair the Oak Hill ballfields after they were heavily damaged in an October flood. Darius has played baseball in Oak Hill for three years—starting with t-ball. The soon-to-be third grader at Cowan Elementary plays shortstop, first base and centerfield. He aspires to become a Major League Baseball player. Darius’ dad, Daniel Williams, told the Gazette, “This was his first time doing PHR and we were quite surprised how far he went—it kind of took us off guard. We weren’t sure what to expect from him, but he had lots of fun.” Darius agreed, saying, “I had fun and I liked going to Houston because we stayed in a big fancy hotel and I was able to take a friend.” Meeting Baltimore Oriole Manny Machado
was icing on the cake. Darius’ mom, Jennifer Moreno-Williams, credits the restoration of the Oak Hill ballfields—and the Oak Hill Youth Sports Association—with the accomplishment. She believes if OHYSA hadn’t rebuilt the fields, “the boys and girls would not have had a chance to participate in this exciting event. It goes to show how this could not have happened without the help and support from the community, sponsors and numerous volunteers who helped rebuild.” Abbey Smith Abbey just graduated from Mills Elementary School and will begin sixth grade at Gorzycki Middle School in the fall. She started playing softball in Oak Hill when she was 4 years old. “Smitty,” as her teammates call her, has always been good in her sport, being named to the Oak Hill AllStars for five consecutive years. Her Pinto teams went to the Pony South Zone Fast-Pitch League 8U Softball Nationals in 2011 and 2012, where
they placed third. Abby has also played Select Travel Softball since she was 7. Her father, Mike Smith, told the Gazette, “She participated in the U.S. Fast-Pitch Association World Series in Panama City Beach, Florida, in 2012 and 2013 as a member of Austin’s Finest Softball Club.” She currently plays shortstop and outfield for Texas Blaze Softball Club. Her dad says, “The Blaze is
one of the premier Select/Travel Softball Organizations in Central Texas and has produced former Texas Longhorn players like Bowie High School’s Blaire Luna and Cedar Park’s Taylor Thom.” Abbey is not new to PHR competition, having earned a trip to Houston last year in the 9-10 age division. Her dad says, “We’re very proud of how hard Abbey works to be successful at everything she does.
We felt she had a great opportunity to do well again this year and had a bit of an advantage because of her success last year. Smitty works on the PHR events throughout the year in an effort to represent herself and her community. She was one of the youngest competitors in her age group, but we knew her hard work would pay off.” Continued on next page

Ballplayers Beyond the Bases Continued from p. 3
Continued from p. 31 PHR Competition Darius and Abbey competed in Oak Hill on March 22, at Krieg Fields in Austin on May 17, and in Houston on June 1. The final competition takes place prior to the MLB Home Run Derby on July 14. Said Roush of the finalists, “They will play on the same field as the MLB’s All-Stars and catch baseballs in the outfield during the Home Run Derby.” The top three PHR scorers from the 30 competitions will be determined on June 29, with the national finalists receiving an all-expense paid trip to the All-Star Game and will be treated to a PHR Welcome Reception, MLB Brunch and All-Star FanFest. Darius’ mom said, “We were instructed to watch MLB Network on June 29th to see the live announcements of National Finalists.” But Darius will likely be on the Little
$750 in scholarship funds to pay for kids’ league fees. Since then, Beyond the Bases has provided equipment to nearly 500 kids across the state of Texas and raised over $15,000 in scholarships.” Beyond the Bases hosted the PHR competition on Oak Hill’s opening day. Said Rouse, “Pitch, Hit, and Run’s mission to provide kids with a free opportunity to participate while emphasizing the ‘fun’ element in baseball really captures what Beyond the Bases is all about; we too hope to provide League field that day—his dad says they’ll record the announcement and watch it later. Abby’s dad says she, too, will not be home to see whether she is chosen as finalist because she will be practicing in Round Rock with the Blaze.
all kids the opportunity to have fun playing baseball and softball. Pitch, Hit, and Run is an event that allows us to enhance and expand our outreach.” He added, “Beyond the Bases is always looking for equipment donations and to help for kids in need. If anyone had anything they would like to donate or knows of a child or a team who is in need of equipment, they can contact me at beyondthebases@austin. rr.com. I also invite everyone to check out our website, www. beyondthebases.org. No matter what names are announced on June 29, these kids are already winners.
