Recycling Resource Directory

Revised 4/2014

Printed on Recycled Paper

Dear Recycler: Allegheny County appreciates your desire to recycle. To assist you in that effort, we have developed this directory of locations in the County which accept various materials for recycling -- from glass containers to polystyrene loose fill. We hope that you are able to find a location close to you to take the items you wish to recycle. This directory is divided into three sections: o List of recyclers by material type (such as glass, newsprint, etc.) and location in the County (North, South, East, West, or Pittsburgh) o List of recyclers in alphabetical order (listing address, phone number, hours of business and materials accepted) o List of commercial, large volume recyclers For items not listed in this directory, such as used motor oil, please call the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Recycling Hotline at 1-800-346-4242, or the Allegheny County Recycling Office at 412-578-8390. Thank you for your interest in recycling. An electronic version of this document is available on our website at www.achd.net. Please help us keep our directory current by letting us know of any changes to the listings.

Keep your furnace tuned; an inefficient heating system will waste 20% of the energy it uses. Replace an old (20 years) heating system with a new, energy-efficient one. Maintain your thermostat in winter at 65-68qF during the day, 55qF at night, or better, install an automatic setback thermostat. Senior citizens have special heating needs. Check for and seal off heat leaks. Use your air conditioner only when necessary; open windows and turn on fans during cool nights. Make sure your insulation is sufficient; this includes hot water pipes, heating ducts and crawl spaces. Weatherstrip and caulk windows and doors. In the winter, keep windows closed and shades pulled to conserve energy. Close the fireplace damper when not in use. Switch to energy-efficient lighting, such as “Supersaver” incandescent bulbs or compact fluorescent bulbs. Use dimmer controls and “task” lighting. Turn off lights when not needed. Remember that light-colored walls will make the house seem brighter. Set your water heater at the lowest setting that will provide you with sufficient hot water; that would be the “medium” setting, unless you have a dishwasher, which requires hotter water. Wash only full loads in the dishwasher. Don’t waste water by prerinsing. Top-freezer refrigerators are more efficient than side-by-side models. Choose the right size refrigerator and keep it full; food retains cold better than air. Position the refrigerator out of direct sunlight. Clean refrigerator condenser coils annually; replace door seals when they deteriorate. Microwave ovens and crock pots are more efficient for heating small quantities of food. Wash clothes with warm water and rinse with cold water. Use non-phosphate laundry detergents. Dry only full loads in the clothes dryer; clean the lint trap between each load. Air drying is the most energy-efficient procedure. Install water-saving showerheads and faucet aerators. Take short showers rather than baths. Repair leaky faucets and toilets. Reduce the amount of junk mail you receive by writing: See Page 25 of this directory.

Minimize the use of pesticides. When you do use them, follow the label directions carefully. Select plant species that are resistant to insects and diseases. Provide habitat for birds that prey on insects. Planting deciduous trees near your home will reduce heating and cooling bills. Cut grass 2" to 3" high. Fertilize and water only as required. Compost your yard wastes and use the compost as a natural fertilizer. Call Allegheny County’s Recycling Coordinator for a booklet on composting how-to. Avoid spills when refueling your mower. Don’t use your hose as a broom; sweep your driveway. Use water-based products (paints, etc.) whenever possible. Never dump waste oil into a drain; take it to a service station for recycling. Combine several errands in one auto trip to reduce air pollution. Try walking or biking for short errands. Buy only fuel-efficient autos; get regular tune-ups. Drive at a steady speed. Start and stop evenly. Avoid driving during peak traffic hours. Buy products that have the least negative impact on the environment; this is “green consumerism”. Buy in bulk or buy concentrated products when possible. Avoid buying disposables. Use items with recycled content whenever possible. Buy goods with the least amount of packaging and in recyclable containers.
