Principal’s Welcome

It is a pleasure to welcome you to our new College course guide.

In our 100th year, Oaklands can look back with enormous pride at what we have achieved for and with our learners, sta and the many employers’ communities and stakeholders we serve. We also look forward, with confidence and optimism, at what we will do for our many stakeholders throughout our next century.

Oaklands has a long proud heritage in providing responsive, transformational education, tracing our roots back to when we opened our doors to both men and women on an equal basis in 1921. Throughout our history, we have challenged and supported our students providing them with the knowledge and skills to achieve their individual ambitions and dreams so they can make their own contributions to their communities.

Oaklands has always expected the best for, and from its students.

Whilst the operating environment for Further Education remains as challenging as ever, Oaklands has a history of rising to such challenges, seizing opportunities and empowering our stakeholders to do the same. For a century our adaptability, flexibility and community responsiveness have contributed to the college’s success. These remain the qualities we continue to demonstrate, and instil in others, to face our shared future.

Our strategic plan developed at the start of a new Millenia for us sets out the direction of travel to achieve all of the ambitions for our learners, sta and stakeholders.

Within the guide you will find a wide range of courses which are specifically designed to maximise your future career and/or university choices. Whatever your background and whatever level of study you begin, we are totally focused on your future and will work with you to ensure you are able to reach your goal. This is why Oaklands is a first-choice college for first class careers and first class university destinations.

At Oaklands we want the best for and from our students and we ensure that you are supported and stretched in equal measure. Our strong links

with industry, business and universities, which provide a wealth of opportunities for our students, is in part why so many of our students go on to exciting careers with high earning potential or further study at top ranking universities. Whatever it is you want to do next, Oaklands will give you the very best opportunities to achieve it.

I hear many times from past students about how their time at Oaklands has made a significant and positive impact on their lives – and I am proud to say that many of our past students keep in touch with us and are still very much part of the Oaklands family.

We’re fortunate to have two wonderful main campuses, one in Welwyn Garden City and one in St Albans, as well as a third, smaller campus in Borehamwood. Each has a di erent character and is shaped to provide a highly enjoyable student experience. We are also proud of our nationally recognised centres of excellence in the Creative Industries, Science & Technology, Sports, Hospitality and Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND).

We are delighted to continue the exciting investment project into developing our campuses, we begin with a £60million build project starting early in 2023 with our Sports Pavilion, Construction Centre & Creative Gateway building and have a onward, impressive aspirational estates masterplan of c£100million. As we enter 2023, we will start exploring the possibilities of redeveloping our WGC campus.

This year, we move past our one-hundredth year, building on a proud tradition of educating generations of people who are fulfilling their dreams all over the world, having been part of the Oaklands College community. We are very proud of all our past and current students’ successes.

Principal’s Welcome

The list is too large to mention in its entirety, but it includes the high proportion of our sporting academy students who go on to represent Great Britain, including four former students Daryll Neita, Reece Prescod, Ama Pipi and Celia Quansah who all competed at the Tokyo Olympic Games, our hospitality students who have careers in many of the country’s top restaurants and our creative industries students who work with some of the biggest global brands in the sector – to name but a handful.

I would encourage you to come to one of our open days and get a sense of what it’s like to be a student here. We’re well known for our friendly atmosphere and highly supportive sta and this is one of the many reasons so many people choose to study with us.

I hope you find this guide helpful and if you have any questions whatsoever, please do contact our Admissions Team on 01727 737000.

I look forward to welcoming you at one of our open days.

Introduction to T-levels

The qualifications o ered by Oaklands college aims to give students a distinct advantage in entering the labour Market. Teaching & learning ensures that students are well prepared for continuing both, onto the next level of study & training or into employment. We strive to allow an Oaklands College student to stand out in an application, in an interview, in a pitch to a selection panel and to create a network of contacts. From September 2023 we will be adding an additional qualification known as T-levels. These qualifications build on our relationships with industry and employers, and our success in enabling students to progress into employment and start their careers.

T-levels are 2-year qualifications which are taken after GCSEs and are equivalent to 3 A Levels.

Launched in September 2020, these courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and education providers so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for entry into skilled employment, an apprenticeship or University.

The qualifications provide students with practical and knowledge-based learning at college and on-the-job experience through an industry placement of at least 315 hours – approximately 45 days.

What are T-levels?

New, two year technical education courses for 16-19 year olds that will follow GCSEs

Developed in collaboration with employers, so that the content meets the needs to industry and prepapres students for work.

Course includes a mixture of classroom learning (80%) and ‘on-the-job’ experience (20%) during an industry placement of a minumum of 45 days.

Qualifications comprise a core component and one or more occupational specialisms.

Progression options include skilled employment, further study or a higher apprecnticeship (T-levels will attract UCAS points).

More rigorous and substantial than most existing technical qualifications, with longer teaching time - one T-level is comparible in size to 3 A Levels.

Contact Centre: 01727 737000info@oaklands.ac.uk www.oaklands.ac.uk 13 Introduction

The stats...

80% CLASSROOM, 20% WORK

T-level students spend 80% of the course in their learning environment, gaining the skills that employers need. The other 20% is a meaningful industry placement, where they put these skills into action.

EQUIVALENT TO 3 A LEVELS

T-levels are an alternative to A levels, apprenticeships and other 16 to 19 courses. Equivalent in size to 3 A levels, a T-level focuses on vocational skills and can help students into skilled employment, higher study or apprenticeships.

45-DAY INDUSTRY PLACEMENT

Each T-level includes an indepth industry placement that lasts at least 45 days. Students get valuable experience in the workplace; employers get early sight of the new talent in their industry.

BTEC Diplomas provide a practical, real-world approach to learning and an alternative route to traditional GCSEs and A Levels. They focus on the holistic development of the practical, interpersonal and thinking skills required to be able to succeed in employment and higher education.

BTEC qualifications were established over 25 years ago and are recognised by universities, employers and professional bodies across the United Kingdom and in over 100 countries worldwide. The table below shows how many UCAS points each of the most common qualifications are worth.

For example, an Extended Diploma at Triple Distinction* (D*D*D*) equates to 3 A Levels at A*.

What can I study?

The suite of ‘value-added’ courses provides an exciting mix of both traditional A Levels and nonA Level but equivalent subjects so that students can benefit from both types of pedagogy (the linear A Level and modular BTEC/CACHE/UAL). Students taking these subjects will not only be supported to achieve good quality grade outcomes but also gain additional life skills that will prepare them for study and life at university, Apprenticeships and employment.

A Levels cannot be studied individually and can only be taken in combination with the relevant vocational qualification.

Springfield

PE Level Full Time 2 - 3 Years (subject to funding) St Albans

Springfield is a specialist provision based at the St Albans Campus which caters for young people aged 16-22 who have either a profound and complex or severe learning di culty or disability, and may or may not require additional medical support in order to access to curriculum. This also includes young people whose needs may fall within the Autistic Spectrum and who may have associated communication di culties and require behavioural support. Following initial assessment, students will be placed with the most appropriate peer group that best reflects their needs and abilities. Curriculum delivery will be led by the Aims and Outcomes as detailed on Education Health and Care Plans.

What will I learn?

Springfield is split into programmes depending on the needs of the individual student. These include:

Core Skills and Encounters

These programmes are designed for students with Profound and Multiple Learning Di culties who require a sensory based curriculum. The programs are centered on individual need, but are intended to address the most basic need for sensory discrimination and self-awareness as a starting point. Learning will be encouraged through activities that will develop the ability to “select, integrate and derive meaning from” these experiences.

Please contact us on 01727 737780 / 737198 to arrange an appointment. Or email Life@oaklands.ac.uk

All students are encouraged to use switches to operate equipment and to have control of their local environment.

There is recognition that communication from students is likely to be heavily dependent on advocate interpretation and sta continuity will be maintained as far as possible in order to facilitate this.

Some students will be able to work with early stages of symbol recognition alongside objects of reference.

Choices and Options

These courses are for students with a severe learning disability requiring significant assistance to access the curriculum but capable of engaging in more formal activities that will encourage basic independence skills where appropriate.

The main aims of these courses is to promote basic independence, develop choice making skills through the use of pictures and symbols and to develop the students individual communication strategies using Makaton, PECS, Voca, Eye Gaze and other assisted communication technologies.

All students are empowered through switch work and expressive communication strategies to exercise control over their own environment, allowing them to make meaningful choices. Where appropriate, students will be supported and encouraged to develop simple independent living skills such as basic food preparation and self-help skills.

Sport Oaklands Wolves Cycling Academy

Now in it’s sixth year, our Cycling Academy has once again broken new ground by creating a fully-fledged Freeride Academy to run alongside our very successful Endurance academy. It is the first of its kind in the UK just as our endurance academy was when it started 6 years ago and it already has some of the country’s very best Junior and U23 riders coming through it.

The academy provides the chance for talented and aspiring riders to progress from the youth ranks right the way through being a competitive Junior and into the Senior ranks. The aim is simple: To help each and every rider develop their physiological capacity and racing brain so as to become the best rider they can be without ever falling out of love with the sport.

Progress and Opportunities

This is done through a strong team ethic within the training group which trains together every day. Alongside this is a full physiotherapy and strength and conditioning program run by our dedicated cycling specific Physio and Strength and Conditioning lead. The academy has an endurance focus which caters best for road and time trail riders but in which track, cyclo-cross and mountain bike riders will also flourish. Its home is the lanes and trails of Hertfordshire as well as Gosling stadium Velodrome (which is booked each week) and Redbridge Cycling Centre which is a key partner of the academy.

Riders can continue to race for their own club or team whilst training with the academy.

Programe Structure

The academy allows riders to train and study an appropriate post 16 qualification by dedicating half of every day to training. The whole of Wednesday is given over to a long morning ride followed by an afternoon of physio appointments and ‘Cycling Theory’ which combines tactical and technical lessons on subjects such as race craft, nutrition and the history of the sport, as well as allowing for guest speakers and race video analysis. The other half of the week is taken up with academic studies.

With strong links with European and UK domestic teams we provide the perfect stepping stone for those good enough to turn pro. The programme also forms the first half of the East of England Cycling Academy Pathway (EECAP) run in partnership with Writtle University College in Essex which has a Cycling Degree course and progressive training environment for riders aged 18+.

Access to EducationHigher

The Access to Nursing and Midwifery course is one of the most challenging but rewarding things I have completed. It has allowed me to start my degree in midwifery and has provided me with the educational foundation to feel confident in starting my degree. The support from the teachers was excellent and I could not have done it without them.
