The rectangular top composed of two wide boards set within a frame and supported by transverse stretchers, the panelled top above a widely flaring waist, the apron carved with well executed ruyi heads, the slender cabriole legs terminating in ruyi heads, all supported by a rectangular stretcher on bracket feet. Masterfully carved and polished to a lustrous finish, this elegant stand displays the technical virtuosity of 18th century wood carvers. Zitan was the most precious and highly esteemed timber available to the master craftsmen working in the Muzuo (Wood Workshop) belonging to the Zaobanchu (Imperial Palace Workshop). With its jade-like silky texture, extremely fine and dense grain, and subtle and deep lustre, zitan was the favourite timber of the Ming and Qing courts. Its long growth period combined with its limited availability, growing mainly in the southern regions of Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, made it especially valuable. By the Qing dynasty, excessive felling of zitan led to the exhaustion of its supply in China, and by the Qianlong reign, special measures were taken by the court to protect, monitor and restrict the use of zitan to the Palace Workshops.

The vase is well modelled with a flattened globular body, tapering to an oval foot, surmounted by a tall waisted neck and flanked by a pair of archaistic dragon handles; the whole is boldly painted in vivid tones of cobalt blue with simulated ‘heaping and piling’, depicting large stylised lotuses and smaller attendant blooms borne on an undulating foliate meander, between pendent ruyi heads and upright lappets, all below a band of plantain leaves at the neck; the mouth and foot are encircled by bands of cresting waves, while the underside is inscribed with a six-character Yongzheng seal mark. The decoration on this vase is meticulously executed in the finest cobalt blue. The composition of lotus blooms and foliate scrolls is perfectly balanced through a thorough understanding of the importance of spacing in successfully creating a rich yet not overcrowded design. These curling lines are offset by the bold geometric rendering of the petal and leaf borders, all of which are circumscribed with crashing wave bands around the foot and mouth rim – ingeniously selected as they mirror the curvilinear and geometric forms of the overall design. Both the shape and decoration of the vessel take their inspiration from early fifteenth century blue and white porcelain of the Imperial collection. The flat circular form has its roots in archaic bronzes which were adapted into porcelain and painted with luxurious lotus designs during the Ming dynasty. Yongzheng vase is extremely rare, there is only one known example exists, that’s in the Tianminglou collection

The setting is detailed with large overhanging cloud, pine trees and jagged cliffs and rocky promontories. Chenxiangmu (eagleswood) ruyi scepters are rare objects for the scholar’s desk. They usually retain the natural form of the wood and are characteristically decorated with applied relief scenes pieced from smaller sections of wood as illustrated by the current ruyi. The three-dimensional composition of this ruyi is enhanced through the sophisticated use of high and low relief carving. The natural knots of the wood have been cleverly incorporated into the decoration, conveying a naturalistic rocky cascade.
