Making Your
Making Your Future Today As a prominent local employer, Equiniti and Equiniti’s LGBT+ Network are proud to sponsor Worthing Pride.
Welcome To Worthing Pride, 2019 – the towns SECOND Pride festival! The success of the first Worthing Pride in 2018 was frankly overwhelming. Not only did we have 700 participants for the fabulous parade and all 4000 tickets sold, the good people of Worthing and beyond came out in force to witness the colourful spectacle celebrating diversity, tolerance and Love for all. The town centre streets were lined with thousands of cheering supporters, jubilantly united as one. Also in force were local police, fire and shore services, their uniforms and vehicles resplendent in full Pride regalia, showing solidarity for the LGBT+ community. The parade was followed by fabulous entertainments at the Main Event, headlined by the superb Abba Magic, and lets not forget the Pride host and ring master, keeping frivolities in check, the irrepressible Spice. Residents of the town, past and present, said that they felt a “renewed sense of pride for their hometown”, touched by the huge crowds who supported the event. One person wrote;
Having grown up in Worthing in the 80’s and 90’s, I would never in my wildest dreams imagined walking through the town hand-in-hand with my partner, being natural and openly affectionate along side many other couples, gay and straight, and no-one caring. Today was a special day, I am so proud to be from Worthing. As a co-organiser of WP 2019, this fills me with immense ‘Pride’ and realisation that we as a community, and our wonderful nation, have come a long way in our journey towards acceptance and equality. To top it off, Worthing Pride 2018 was nominated for ‘Best Event’ award at the annual Sunny Worthing Awards, alongside many fabulous, established events in the town...and we won! Do come along and show your pride; for who you are, our differences, and your town! This, our second Pride; the biggest, most colourful tea-party and fete the town has ever witnessed. #proud

Proudly supported by Worthing Pride
Worthing Pride in the community Working as a Senior Learning Support Assistant at Greater Brighton Metropolitan College (MET), I support and help to develop students. I consider education to play a huge part in increasing confidence and self-esteem, and one of the reasons I love my job is because I get to witness, first hand, the growth and progression of students towards their future journey. Whilst supporting students on their path, it is fundamental to provide a safe environment for students from all backgrounds; to teach and challenge when necessary, and for them to utilise their knowledge and skills in order for them to thrive and become the best version of themselves. I believe that self-acceptance is significant in reaching selfactualisation, wherefore feeling fulfilled and an individual reaching their full potential, ignites a passion and future so bright, that each day they wake up feeling content. Because if I could wish anything for our students, happiness would be it.
Keira Thomas
With this at the heart of my role, and personally being a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have introduced an LGBTQ+ Group within our West Durrington campus. My colleague, Jenny Casey (Pastoral Mentor), has also introduced a group at our Central Brighton campus. The aim of the groups is to create a safe environment for students associated with the LGBTQ+ community - to socialise and support each other in a surrounding of acceptance. As a College, we promote Equality and Diversity and celebrate expression and individual differences. We encourage students to have a voice and to embrace who they are, which is exactly what the groups represent. Inclusivity is paramount within the groups, wherefore we welcome any student associated with the LGBTQ+ community. In addition, and in recognition of allies within the LGBTQ+ community and the amazing support they contribute, the West Durrington group offers sessions where allies are also welcome. This gives students the opportunity to bring along a friend, and to encourage students to attend who may struggle in social situations. I understand that attending either group is a huge step for some students, therefore they are encouraged to participate in discussions and activities at their own pace. Ultimately, having an LGBTQ+ Group available is momentous, because making a difference, however big or small, matters. Just as each and every student matters. Lastly, as a member of the Worthing Pride team, I would like to thank you for your support and wish you all the most wonderful Worthing Pride 2019. It really makes it that more special to have members of the community, such as yourselves, involved in our influential and worthwhile event. We look forward to you visiting MET’s stall on the day. But until then...Be bold. Be proud. Be you.

“Why have Pride?” pride is a powerful thing. It’s a terribly strong emotion. We should be proud about everything; from our nationality to ethnicity, and gender to sexuality. But right now, Pride is still so very important.
In the 50th year since the Stonewall Riots, we have come along way to achieve equality. Its hard to think that only three decades ago, Prides were volatile, political demonstrations and marches, met with violence and fierce opposition. 30 years later, Pride festivals have thankfully evolved and celebrated around the world. Visibility and acceptance are at an all-time high, thanks to those brave pioneers who fought for our equal rights.
Progress is threatened, however, and there is still a long way to go. Even with marriage equality increasing, some countries are still refusing to recognise equal marriage rights, whilst others are even backtracking. In certain countries and states, being gay is still illegal, and a person can be fired from their job for being gay, and there are many other LGBTQ inequalities around the world - and on our doorsteps. Pride festivals today serve many different purposes. It’s a chance to celebrate, of course. Prides have evolved, but we need to celebrate ALL our identities because there are still so many reasons why Pride matters, now and just as much as it did in the past. The LGBTQ acronym and the colourful, universal rainbow flag represent all different identities, genders, and sexualities. Pride festivals are a celebration of all the ‘colours’, together as one, in a safe and accepting, beautiful place – literally and metaphorically, because we are all colourful and beautiful in our own individual way.
A Pride festival that brings everyone together in the community is what Worthing Pride 2019 is all about. A place where gay, bi, trans, straight, older, younger, and families from across our fabulous town, can celebrate acceptance, tolerance and diversity, and the importance of Love. Love for all.
BE PART OF A COMMUNITY THAT CARES We are the largest community healthcare provider in Sussex and our expert teams treat around 1.3m people across the county. Â We jumped 146 places in Stonewall's Workplace Equality Index last year and are fast becoming a truly inclusive employer. Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) Brighton Tht bRIGHTON have been offering HIV testing and sexual health services to the
community of Brighton, Worthing and Eastbourne for decades and we continue to help win the fight against HIV and AIDS. At THT, we offer a wide variety of services to the community, from HIV rapid testing to social care support. We are an established, trusted brand, founded by a pioneer of LGBTQ rights, helping people build the trust that’s required when dealing with sexual health matters. The services we provide the community are HIV/Syphilis rapid testing, along with S.T.I. screenings. These rapid HIV tests provide a result in just five minutes. Testing is the only way to ensure that a person is not living with HIV. Once the virus enters in to the blood system there are very little symptoms. We offer face to face support, addressing issues such as problematic drug use, where a person’s judgement and awareness of sexual responsibility is diminished.
THT also offer free counselling services for those living with or affected by HIV, as well as other specialist services providing support and advice for those at risk – including sex workers.
If you would like access to these services, or if need support in relation to HIV, drugs misuse, counselling, or need to access the social care services or welfare rights please contact us at any time. Call; 01273 764200, email; info.brighton@tht.org.uk or visit our website; www.tht.org.uk
We are delighted to have been invited to Worthing Pride, for the second year running! Please remember to come and visit us at our stall for free advice and more. On behalf of the Terence Higgins Trust, we’d like to wish everyone a HAPPY PRIDE! The Terence Higgins Trust.
