WE L C O M E On behalf of Active Sussex, it gives me great pleasure to extend a very warm welcome to everyone attending what is yet another record breaking year at the Sussex Sports Awards. As organisers of this event, we are delighted to be at the Hilton Brighton Metropole to celebrate the achievements of our Sussex sporting superstars.
Tonight we are celebrating those that have a ‘superhero attitude’ and have accomplished phenomenal achievements by believing in their abilities.
The awards provide the perfect stage on which to reward dedicated clubs, coaches, volunteers, athletes and those community leaders whose work and determination behind the scenes is so crucial to the provision of sport and physical activity, from grassroots level right through to elite. I am delighted to introduce your hosts for the evening: firstly, legendary GB sprint and hurdling Olympic athlete Kriss Akabusi MBE, and secondly, revered radio presenter BBC Sussex’s Danny Pike, presenting for his tenth consecutive year at this event. Alongside the awards we are also asking the public to help us find our winner of the Club of the Year award. To vote, head to ssa19.club, and you have until tonight’s delicious dessert to cast your vote! As well as finding out the award winners, you can look forward to some spectacular entertainment from the OutSingCancer Choir, who are singing uplifting and memorable songs, and Living Room Circus, the experimental circus company who will provide an exhilarating and thrilling performance. Then the dance floor is yours to ‘get active’ till the early hours once the formal awards are over. We will be raising charitable funds to support the Sussex Parallel Youth Games 2020 – the only multi-sport participation event of its size in Sussex for children with disabilities. It gives young people the opportunity to be defined not by their disability, but instead by their inspirational achievements while creating positive lasting memories. We have a plethora of prizes in the raffle and silent auction, so please give generously.
Finally.. on behalf of Active Sussex, I would like to thank all our corporate sponsors, official partners, the award judges, plus the Active Sussex team of staff and trustees who have made the event possible. I wish all of our finalists the best of luck! Sadie Mason MBE Chief Executive

KRISS AKABUSI MBE
Kriss, one of Britain’s most well-known athletes, is a three-time Olympic medallist, World, European and Commonwealth Champion, British record holder and larger-than-life media personality.
The legendary GB sporting star rose to fame on the athletics track, where his greatest individual triumph was winning the gold medal in the 1990 European Championships. This was the day when he beat David Hemery’s British record, which had stood for 22 years, for the 400 metre hurdles. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona Kriss went onto win the bronze medal, lowering his record to 47.82 seconds, a time which still stands today. Kriss, who was brought up in the care system in London, began his international athletics career in 1983 as a member of the 4x400 metre relay squad. The star runner is famously remembered for helping Britain clinch the gold from the mighty Americans at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo. The much decorated athlete was bestowed with another great honour in 1992 – an MBE awarded by her Majesty the Queen in recognition of his services to the country through athletics. Following his retirement from sports, Kriss has become a much-loved television presenter, working on several shows including Record Breakers and The Big Breakfast and regularly appeared as a panellist on many quiz shows including A Question of Sport and They Think It’s All Over.

Much-loved and revered radio presenter Danny has hosted the weekday mid-morning show on BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey since 2009. Although originally from London, Danny has lived in Sussex for over 20 years and still considers it the best place to live in the country. Danny loves sport, and living by the sea means he can get in the water; be it jet skiing, wakeboarding or sailing. He can also be found on dry land, playing football or cycling. Wherever he is, you can be sure that he’s up to something active. The face of the Sussex Sports Awards, this is Danny’s tenth year as our host!
Wave has been instrumental in delivering these successful classes.
He has really flourished in Get Set Club.
The leader kindly took Casey for a one to one.
I like to keep fun, laughter and engagement at the heart of the session.
It gave him an opportunity to burn off energy while still using his mind.
I enjoy the sports and independence. I feel more active now than before.
I have had such a lot of support from all the instructors.
She came home last week bubbling over with excitement about what she had learned.

ABOUT THE GAMES The Sussex Parallel Youth Games is the only, multi-sport participation event of its size for children with disabilities in Sussex. The ‘mini-Paralympics’, showcases and celebrates disability sport and gives young people the opportunity to be defined not by their disability, but instead by their inspirational achievements while creating positive lasting memories. Organised by Active Sussex, with support from partners, it also provides a non-competitive, thrilling experience for young people to try out sports and learn new skills such as teamwork and leadership.
THIS YEAR'S HIGHLIGHTS The 14th annual Sussex Parallel Youth Games, took place at the K2 Crawley, a state-of-the-art competition venue operated by Everyone Active, on Wednesday 15 May. Over 400 young people, from 15 schools across the county, enjoyed the prestigious occasion, taking part in a range of sports from bouldering and climbing to new age kurling! London Olympian and double World Championships medallist Charles Cousins was on hand to open the event, inspire and supported the participants throughout the day and presented medals. “It’s vital that events like this continue for children with disabilities because it will help build confidence and skills. I’m also sure there are future Paralympic stars here also but most importantly the day is about creating amazing memories and experiences for the young people,” said Charles.

ABOUT
Satellite clubs can help bridge the gap between school, college and community sport – and provide new opportunities for young people to get active. The Sport England, Lottery funded programme provides opportunities to take part regularly in sport and activity through the creation of enjoyable, convenient club opportunities for young people that are designed around their needs and provide a positive experience of being active. Satellite clubs have helped thousands of young people to get active and are primarily focused on young people, aged 14-19, who aren’t already active - particularly those who are in groups typically under-represented in sport.
FOR THE FUTURE Active Sussex are looking to work with partner organisations who work with the following 14-19 year old target groups: • Education transition • Inactive • People with disabilities • Low Socio Economic Groups • Young people with barriers to sport (e.g. anxiety, mental health issues, cultural)
Active Sussex has been delivering the Satellite Clubs programme across the county since 2013 and in this time over 3,000 young people have benefitted. activesussex.org/sport-in-education/satellite-clubs

PRI M A R Y S C H O O L S PO R T SCHOOL GAMES MARK The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward primary and secondary schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Participating in this process allows schools to evaluate their PE provision and assists them in developing an action plan for future progress. Each School Games Mark application is divided into four sets of questions. They cover the following basic topics; Participation, Competition, Workforce & Clubs. In 2018-19 there were a record number of schools achieving School Games Mark with 344 schools attaining the quality mark and a record 34 platinum marks awarded.
QUALITY START Quality Start is a recognition award to reward primary schools for their commitment to developing PE, School Sport and Healthy Active Lifestyles for their Key Stage 1 pupils. Quality Start is a local Sussex award designed by two experienced PE experts Ali Groves and Sandy Fell with the support of Active Sussex. Since its launch in 2016-17 every year has seen an increase in the number of schools achieving the award and 2018-19 was another record breaking year, with nearly 60 schools gaining Quality Start and over 50% of those gaining Platinum or Platinum Plus. To achieve the award, schools self-assess against set criteria and grade themselves at Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Platinum Plus level. A member of the Quality Start Team will then validate the application with a school visit and award a glass plaque, certificate and logo according to the level achieved. Schools receive a written letter highlighting the strengths of provision and areas for development which is used to inform their development plan for the following year. The Quality Start Award looks at schools KS1 provision across 7 areas: Engagement of all pupils, Competition and festivals, Profile of PE, sport and healthy active lifestyles, Staff Workforce (school staff and sport coaches), Sports leadership and Community engagement.
ACTIVE SUSSEX SUPPORT Active Sussex offers free, impartial advice and support to primary schools to help them effectively utilise their PE & Sport Premium funding, for more information please visit: www.activesussex.org/sport-in-education

HAM P ION S FERRING WALKING GROUP
HEALTHY WALKS IN ARUN
Run by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Arun District Council the inspiration ‘Healthy Walks in Arun’ was established in 2001. It is part of the national initiative ‘Walking for Health’ and the projects overall aim is to engage people into physical activity, many of whom wouldn’t be physically active otherwise. All the walks, which are completely free of charge to participants, are led by Volunteer Walk Leaders, who are fully trained by Freedom Leisure’s specialist trainer at a free, one-day Walking for Health course. To ensure the walks are fully inclusive, each one has a support Back Marker too, who will walk at the slowest person’s pace. Currently there are nine weekly walks and five monthly walks as part of the Healthy Walks in Arun programme. From January 2018 - August 2019 there has been 18,272 attendances on the scheme.
Charlotte Simpson, Freedom Leisure Active Communities Coordinator said: “Our Healthy Walks in Arun programme ticks so many boxes in regards to our local priorities. It contributes greatly to empowering people and improving quality of life and health, whether this be physical, mental or both. The programme’s success is down to the hard work and dedication of all our wonderful volunteer walk leaders like Sian.”
The ‘Healthy Walks in Arun’ – Ferring walking group was set up by Walk Leader Sian Fletcher in 2011. The all-inclusive Ferring group meets every Monday, throughout the year, whatever the weather! For example the group supports those living with long term health conditions including cancer and mental health conditions and also helps support participants who have suffered from a bereavement. When the group first started 10-15 walkers attended each week, this has now grown to 60-70 regular walkers. There has been an incredible 3,929 attendances from January 2018 – August 2019.
“It’s far more than just walking,” said Sian. “The group are like a family really… a large family. The walking group stands by inclusivity and is open to all - there are people from all walks of life.”
“We are very social, people seem to make friends very quickly and people who are on their own have made a network of friends. “You need to come and see it, it’s fun, and people are laughing and talking the whole way.”
The 2019 Young Volunteer of the Year award is proudly supported by the University of Brighton.
Are you a local charity, not-for-profit, public sector organisation or CIC? Our volunteering service, Active Student, can help you engage with University of Brighton students and staff. Over 800 of our students volunteered in local organisations last year. If you would like to work with student volunteers in your organisation, or are interested in thinking about a volunteering activity that students and other local residents can do together, then please contact Beth: 01273 644145 or bt11@brighton.ac.uk.

ACTIVE SUSSEX CLUB OF THE YEAR
And the winner of the Active Sussex Club of the Year 2019 is… Up to you! The judges have chosen their finalists, but it’s over to you to pick a winner!
Make your vote count at ssa19.club Voting closes tonight after your dessert. Westerleigh Judokwai This year has been one of much success for the Battle-based club, awarded the Queens Award (equal to a group MBE) in 2015, with Westerleigh Judokwai athletes competing all over the globe at many different competitions including the Common Wealth Championships and the World Championships, held in Marrakech, Morocco. The all-inclusive club was well represented at the Pan Disability European and World Championships in Holland a team of 20 athletes returned home with a haul of 28 medals including four World Champions and seven European Champions, bringing this year’s medal tally to in excess of 45 medals. Over the year Westerleigh Judokwai has also done numerous fundraising events – including a small team taking part in the Westminister mile, supporting two athletes to complete it with their walking frames.
Whitehawk Football Club This year has been one of much success off the pitch for the Charter Standard Club, including the inspiring project – ‘Non-League for Grenfell’ – with 30 Grenfell children and leaders spending a day by the seaside and mascots at a Whitehawk home league game. At Pride this year, football was united with Whitehawk hosting a match between an ex-Premier League All Star team featuring ex-players from Manchester United, Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur and an LGBTQ+ XI player managed by transgender writer and broadcaster, Sophie Cook. The game was one of the biggest mixed gender matches ever played and gained national media attention. Whitehawk Football Club also ran ‘Hawks Heroes,’ a 10-week programme focused on health and mental well-being through coaching, for men on the Whitehawk Estate aged 30 years and above who were unfit through inactivity. Amongst other projects the club, based at the TerraPura Ground in Brighton, also did partnership work with the food bank and Whitehawk Legends for men who have lost their immediate family network
Worthing Town Football Club The FA Charter Standard Community Club, is one of only 15 clubs in the country that offers a player pathway from youth-to-adult in male, female and disability football. The club has over 600 players FA registered, across 46 teams, for the 2019-20 season and is fully inclusive, with boys and (more) girls teams than any other in the county. This year has been one of much success for the football club, based at Palatine Park, with a number of teams in a variety of age groups winning league titles and or cup competitions. Worthing Town also hosted a three-day Football Festival for over 300 teams with clubs from all over the South of England involved and the club also took part in the Highdown Rotary Carnival. Off the pitch the football club continues to work closely with local schools - providing after school clubs onsite as well as running daily clubs during the holidays from its clubhouse based in Worthing.

ABOUT THE AWARD
The Volunteer of the Year is not a coach and is unpaid. They are a volunteer who gives unconditional support to their sport or club, dedicating great time and effort, often ‘behind the scenes’. They may undertake one or several roles within an organisation and are crucial to the smooth running of that organisation. With devotion and professionalism, they do not seek reward but their efforts over the past year mean they are more than deserving of this accolade. The commitment given by this person, in term of both quality and quantity, is exceptional.
This club will have had significant success in and out of out of competition through on-going development of participation within its community. It has sustainable education and community links and is a fully inclusive club that welcomes and caters for people from all backgrounds. This award is intended to honour clubs who benefit the locality in an exceptional way.
