As I’m sure many of my former teachers, employers, and certainly the nuns at my boarding school will attest, I’ve never been the ‘compliant’ type. Maintaining the status quo “just because” ... well, that has never sat very well with me. So, the past decade or so of extreme disruption has been one of the most thrilling times of my life!
Publisher's NOTE
I love to see people and businesses doing things new ways; smashing moulds and preconceived ideas and giving something new a red hot crack. I’ve revelled in every new update and marvelled the release of every new gadgets. It’s exciting, invigorating, and everything I need to keep my restless mind from wandering off … Oh … hi! Another thing I really love is the Oasis Magazine community. It’s a group of change-makers; pacesetters; professional, stylish and culturally concerned locals who are setting the standards, and doing things differently. You can catch some of the region’s best innovators in each issue of Oasis, and I’m so delighted to have them here! Cairns has entrepreneurialism in its DNA. After all, we have learned to survive the February weather, so coming up with new business ideas seems like a walk in the park. In this issue, we have a look at disruption on a local scale.

We catch up with Jodi Nelson and Kim Marsden, from Local Tourism Network, who have launched an online solution for the local tourism industry. We meet a local business who has turned their passion for yachts into a viable accommodation business, and we chat with 2 Deadly Treadly’s, a group of nine local lads who are taking their future into their own hands, one bike journey at a time. They are just back from the Cardiac Challenge Cairns to Cooktown,
and have vowed they will be saddling up again next year. Have a read of their story on Page 30 - it’s a beauty! We also speak to the ladies from Ribbons Game Fishing Club, and chat with Michael Healy from Quicksilver Group about his family and future ideas. And would you look at all the pretty!! We have oodles of stunning style from the lovely Leanne at FAmazing, who is shaking up the fashion stakes in her Edmonton boutique. You’ll see seven pages of loveliness, modelled by our very gorgeous friend, Bella Kullack. Enormous thanks to the Cairns Aquarium and AquaLuna for the stunning backdrop to this shoot, and for opening up prior to the official opening, to allow us a sneak peak inside. Make sure you get along take your kids, take your friends, you will not be disappointed! On a quieter note, it has been my absolute honour to work with close friends and family of Claire Tucker to publish a tribute to the woman who enriched so many lives. When Claire lost her life after an accidental fall in August, the local community rallied support around her darling son, and the rainbows gained some extra colour. Hug your loved ones, people. Hold them tight. Tell them how much they mean to you. Like, actually call them up today - right now - and tell them! I can guarantee, it will raise their heart and lift their spirits! Me professing how much people mean to me generally coincides with the conclusion of my second wine. And if that’s what it takes, so be it! This crazy ride we are all on can stop at any time, without warning, so make sure you’re doing it your way!

The film itself is a lot of fun - but the audience participation phenomenon has turned it into a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience. Wear your fishnets and pack your water pistols. It’s astounding, and it returns for what is becoming an annual Halloween event. Let’s do the Timewarp - Again.
Often lost in the consensus that this is the greatest movie musical of all time is that this also is a great comedy - and a pretty good love story to boot. The musical sequences take center stage: among them, Gene Kelly’s exhilarating splash dance during the title number, Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds bidding “Good Morning,” and, best of all, O’Connor pulling out all the stops for “Make ‘Em Laugh” perhaps the greatest example of physical prowess ever applied in the service of a musical. Oscarnominated Jean Hagen is a riot as a screechyvoiced actress without a modicum of talent.

Motoring… MUST HAVES DRIVE LARA WILDE Wild Drive
There are two kinds of people: Those who love their car; and those who simply love what their car can do for them. Often, we feel that time spent commuting is wasted. You sit in traffic (well, Cairns’ idea traffic!) and overanalyze past conversations, replay what you should have said, pick at your nails, or simply get frustrated by drivers who don’t respect the road rules. Here are my go-to essentials to make your car more user-friendly,
to the most of your time in the car to and from work so that you arrive pumped and ready to shake up the status quo.
1
A high quality Stainless steel drink flask. Fill with good coffee, revitalizing tea or a blend of fruit and chilled water to get you hydrated. My flask has a plunger so I can load it with slices of fruit and ice cubes and I don’t need to worry about the chunky bits bopping me on the nose as I drink and drive.
2
A beautiful silk scarf. I always keep one on hand to wrap around my face and neck to protect me from the sun while I drive.
3
A pair of high quality sunglasses. Mine are from the Cancer Council to provide maximum protection for my peepers. Sunglasses reduce glare and can mean the difference between seeing the road ahead clearly and ending up in an accident at the last minute.
4
I always keep a white board marker within reach. You can use them to write down brilliant ideas on your window, and saves those pesky pieces of paper in the car, which you’ll probably lose anyway! A
MUST HAVES
quick wipe with a soft cloth and the marker comes off the glass, but in the meantime you have your to do list, directions to your appointment or a reminder to pick up milk on the way home in an easy to read spot.
5
An air freshener made from high quality non toxic stainless steel. The Wilde Drive air freshener comes with interchangeable pads so you can easily change the colour and the scent to suit your mood. Use with high quality essential oils or your favourite perfume.
6
High quality essential oils to increase concentration and focus
while keeping you calm and anxiety free. The scent you choose is a very personal choice. I like a coffee scent on the way to work in the morning and a lavender to relax on the drive home, but you will need to experiment to find the blend that suits you. Some scents will take you to a favourite time or place and make you feel great.
7
Bluetooth connection from your smart phone to your stereo. This will allow you to tune into your favourite podcast or audio book. Explore podcasts such as Richard Fidler’s Conversation Hour, TED talks or the
Tim Ferris Show to be inspired, motivated and educated behind the wheel. You can use your time to learn another language, have a chuckle with some comedians or hear the latest philosophical debates from thought leaders around the world. If you have any other great tools to shake up the status quo on your daily commute, I would love to hear about them. Please drop me a line at wildedrive.com or through my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn or Pinterest. Just like … RIDING A BIKE? WARNER’S CORNER DAVE WARNER Star 102.7
When it comes to vital organs, you don’t get a whole lot more vital than the heart. We’re pretty rooted without it. As would be the euphemism for generosity and love. ‘She has such a beautiful liver’; That doesn’t work. I ‘Kidney’ Cairns t-shirts and bumper stickers; yeah … nah. When it was suggested I ride a pushbike from Cairns to Cooktown, the idea was about as appealing as slamming my genitals in a car door, but I, along with hundreds of other lycra clad humans, accepted the Cardiac Challenge, as it raises money for cardiac services here in Cairns. The last time I threw my leg over a pushie, Nicole Kidman was starring in BMX Bandits and Mum had to dab Dettol on my skinned knee following a failed bunnyhop over two side-by-side Tonka trucks.
And I know riding a bike is just like, well, riding a bike - you never forget, but jeez the rules of engagement have changed a bit.

La Dolce Vita at
VITALIA’S ITALIAN RESTAURANT
I’ve been spending a far too much time on social media lately but I seem to be able to justify it perfectly because that’s often the place I get the heads up on the new restaurants and cafes that are opening in Cairns. One such place that has caught my attention in recent months is Vitalia’s Italian Restaurant in Holloways Beach. It’s pretty hard to ignore their posts of mouth-watering calzone’s topped with fresh caprese and delectable sounding risotto’s in my news feed. Not to mention the numerous messages from fellow foodies and even my dint repair specialist Nico, who just so happens to be Italian, claims it’s the best Italian food in Cairns. There was no time to waste. I had to get there stat. As a mid -week surprise dinner to say thanks to my folks for helping out with some recent reno’s my fiancée thought we would treat them to dinner at this much talked about authentic Italian restaurant. Rocking up at the site of the old Bogey’s restaurant we were greeted with a smile from the lovely owner and took a seat inside near the window (I

needed ample lighting for my foodie photo shoot that would ensue when the food arrived). The four of us poured over the wine list mum and dad excitedly recounted their short but sweet trip to Italy to the owner a few years ago. He graciously listened to dad’s particularly drawn out tale of trying to find the best pizza place in Naples after which he let us know the specials for the evening making an already difficult choice of what to order even more difficult. In the end I stuck to my guns and ordered exactly what I had come for - The Beetroot and Gorgonzola Risotto that had caught my attention on Facebook. The boy chose the Ham and Mushroom Calzone while my parents simply couldn’t make up their minds so instead they chose to share the Seafood Risotto from the specials board and the Ham and Mushroom Calzone minus the ham because mum doesn’t eat red meat. As we waited for our mains we shared some bruschetta and garlic focaccia again recounting tales of our wonderful Italian adventures.
From the very first mouthful of my vibrant beetroot risotto I knew I’d made the right decision and despite its enormous size that had me thinking I couldn’t possibly eat the whole thing – I did. I’m not even going to try and describe the flavour to you. You just have to go there and try it for yourself. Trust me on this. Mum and dad gushed over their risotto and calzone as they washed it all down with a glass each of Chianti (minus the fava beans) and the boy? Well let’s just say he finished every last bite of his calzone and was left with a very satisfied smile. Although we were already up to pussies bow Tiramisu and Pannacotta ensued because when in Rome… well you know the rest. You’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s only Palm Cove and Trinity Beach that have the dinner goods but all of a sudden Holloway’s Beach has come into play. Jot this one down in your little black book for a wonderful night out because Vitalia’s Italian Restaurant at Holloway’s Beach is as authentic as they come.

PASSING GLANCES:
a history of gay Cairns
N BE R: L
, CR ARD DW O WO
COOPER, DESTINY ROGE RS A LINDA ND NA EW EYS EN FE LD
BY IAN BYFORD
This history of the gay community of Cairns from 1876 until gay law reform in 1990 is perhaps the first public account available. Although homosexuality exists in all societies it was not always acceptable. Keeping it hidden has led to little public knowledge about the everpresent gay community. It was criminalised for males but not females since Victorian times when Queensland adopted English common law, including laws against homosexuality, to become a Crown Colony. Passing Glances gives us an insight into a very active gay community in Cairns, particularly the decades to 1990 when the relevant laws were repealed. What is evident from Byford’s account is the hypocritical attitude towards homosexuality wherever it was illegal. Gay people of any standing in a community were tolerated and even accepted in the upper strata of society, as long as they kept a low profile. In contrast, people with no social standing were open to persecution. Ian Byford gives several examples of Cairns restaurateurs who were gay but widely accepted, because they were good entertainers and offered superior catering. With many police frequenting their establishments for fine dining turning a blind eye, it’s obvious that police knew, but chose not to prosecute. As the gay community became more visible in Cairns they were careful not to attract too much attention, but gradually became more accepted. Several venues opened in the early 1970s where gays and locals mixed openly. These included Marmaduke’s Restaurant and the Marlin Bar. These venues also offered
flamboyant entertainment such as the All Male Review. Byford tells of the late 1970s when Millar’s Restaurant opened - gays would wait around outside until the diners left and then flock in for an evening of fun. By 1979 the local gay community, with the support of several ‘straight’ groups, conducted what was considered the first public celebration of homosexuality in Cairns, an Arts ball. Attended by a mixture of gays and heterosexuals, it was deliberately discreet, but it was a start. With the early 1980s outbreak of AIDS, the gay community formed the volunteer Queensland AIDS Committee to educate people about prevention and treatment. The Bjelke-Petersen government, using homophobia for electoral advantage and seizing on the epidemic to further victimise the gay community, refused to provide state funds, or even pass on federal government funds supplied for this purpose. After the repeal of the Act in 1990, the local gay community became more accepted in Cairns. The tourist industry recognised the economic potential to be gained from ‘pink dollar’, and many openly gay venues opened. In recording much of the history of the gay community in Cairns, Ian Byford has shown us the protracted fight to receive acceptance and freedom from victimisation. From being an ostracised sector of the community, persecuted by the police, the gay community in Cairns has now become an accepted part of mainstream Cairns.

Last Cab TO DARWIN Last Cab is a welcome dose of nostalgia as Max Bell travels through the 1990’s outback of Australia. Through an Australia remote from the life of today’s city dwelling Aussies Max, a laid back old style cabbie in the rough mining town of Broken Hill, is driving his trusty cab over the long and dusty 3000 km to Darwin. This is a pub crawl of epic proportions and along the way he meets up with a range of outback characters and we laugh at their antics and behaviour which is now almost lost in folklore. Max is wedded to the bush and on the long stretches of open road we see the love of the bush through his eyes as Max paints the picture of the vast Red Centre at the one time barren

and forbidding, yet at once strong and beautiful. But there is a purpose to this arduous journey …. This is a one-way ticket as Max drives onward to the Northern Territory to become part of history as the first euthanasia patient in Australia. Writer Reg Cribb was moved by the true story of Max Bell, who died in such circumstances in August 1996, and despite Cribb’s diversions of humour and Aussie slang to make the story palatable, we also live Max’s plight as the tangle of red tape prolongs his suffering. Max is played by Michael Price who has extensive professional experience.
Rondo Theatre goers should look forward to his fine performance supported by Dobi Kidu as his Polly and a strong and enthusiastic ensemble and at the end be left to reflect on the contentious euthanasia debate which is still unresolved some 20 years on.

Life Death
Love
Words | Pip Miller

Award-winning playwright Kathryn Ash demonstrates a masterful use of language to tackle the profound questions of love life and death in JUTE’s insightful new Australian work, Here We All Are. Assembled - a rare blend of comedy and tragedy that begins its nine-show season on Friday 29 September 2017. As she confronts the precipice of death and marvels with gratitude at the joy of living, Ash says there is lots of fun to be had by audiences, particularly those, like me, with an appreciation for Shakespearean tomfoolery. “This is as much a play about life as it is about death, because one is meaningless without the other. Just saying.” Here We All Are. Assembled features the extraordinary acting talent of Doug Robins in the role of Jabber, who ascends the limitations of his wheelchair and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in a performance with fellow actor, Natalie Taylor as Poker, in bringing to life Ash’s rare and twisted tale of two hapless characters that dare to question. According to JUTE’s artistic director, Suellen Maunder, the play is set in a rotting dystopian landscape, forgotten by the world. “It is here that we introduce Jabber and Poker, who are comforted by a sense of funny blissful ignorance while turning a blind eye to the impending Armageddon. Then, rising from the detritus of a world in doom, comes the voracious, clever and manipulative ‘Worm’ played by Barbara Lowing who deftly manipulates and divides the slavish trust between Jabber and Poker,” Ms Maunder said. “This play is witty, insightful and poignant and I have no doubt will immerse its audiences into a rotting, dystopian world to bear witness to a final showdown between truth and delusion…to be or not to be?” Ms Maunder said she feels extremely privileged to have been gifted the happy burden of seeking, uncovering and driving the development of this wonderful new work destined

to bring a new understanding to our society. “From my perspective, there are many great things about this play, but perhaps the most exciting is the joy of working with Doug Robins and proof that limitations are something that only exist in one’s mind. “While Doug uses a wheelchair and deals with Duchenne disease, he brings normality to the stage using grace, grit and good humoured determination. It is humbling to witness and embrace his truly amazing performance.” In his role as director, Matt Scholten applauds the sound, style and sensory impact of Ash’s script, which he likens to true artistry. “This play is so delicious, so packed with beauty and terror, comedy and tragedy, fart jokes and existential crises, profound and naïve questions that I couldn’t quite believe my luck. “A play like this is a rare bird and such a gift to a director.” Issue 20 |

KickArts Contemporary Arts contemplates the essence of our regions World Heritage listed rainforests through the exhibition Head in the Clouds. Head in the Clouds sees senior Queensland artist’s Ron McBurnie, Ben Trupperbäumer & June Tupicoff examine the interplay between the mist, fog and low cloud present amongst the dense tropical rainforest of the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland. It presents a pictorial overview of the growth and decay of the rainforest, as reoccurring motifs surface through the cartography and topography of the region.

HEAD IN THE CLOUDS – RON MCBURNIE, BEN TRUPPERBÄUMER & JUNE TUPICOFF
Ben Trupperbäumer is a senior artist who lives and works in the World Heritage listed rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands. With a career spanning over 47 years, Ben is renowned for his sculptural works depicting the natural environment. 2 Deadly TREADLYS
IN MAY 2017, NINE YOUNG INDIGENOUS MEN BECAME THE FOUNDATION MEMBERS OF THE “2 DEADLY TREADLYS” INDIGENOUS YOUTH CYCLING GROUP. For the past three months, they have been training under the watchful eye of Cnr Richie Bates and John Seccull, members of the local cycling community. Cr Bates described it as a significant program for all involved. “These young men have challenged themselves in ways they never considered. Their growth - physically and emotionally - has given them new confidence and abilities.” The Trinity Bay High School students are supported by the Clontarf Foundation and is an Early Intervention Program as part of the State government’s Making Tracks Investment Strategy via Closing The Gap. In the past few months, they have made a huge effort to train before and after school, learn pack riding skills, and carefully considered their lifestyle choices as well as their diet and exercise regimes to make positive changes - the power of the pedal, connection and community! Clontarf Foundation Trinity Bay Academy associate director Aidan Coate said the young men had committed to months of training and hard work.“We’ve had early starts with the boys being picked up from home at 6am for training rides. It’s great to see the boys waiting out the front of
30

their house in the morning ready to tackle the next hill or challenge. The program improves the self-esteem, health, resilience and leadership qualities of these young men who will carry these skills into their school and community,” Mr Coate said.
WE’VE HAD A LOT OF SUPPORT FROM THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, SUCH AS LOCAL BUSINESSES AND BIKE SHOPS.
Lauren Sunner, who has been instrumental in bringing the program to fruition, said the lads had been working really hard. “We’ve had a lot of support from the local community, such as local businesses and bike shops.” Oliver Wacek from Trinity Cycle Works
has also provided support for the group, and is working with each of the boys to repair and service their bikes, which have been supplied by Southside Rotary and the Queensland Police Service. Other members of the local cycling community in Cairns generously donated pre-loved nics, gloves and helmets so the boys could get stuck into their training. Soon after they began their campaign, they set a goal to participate in the Mount Franklin Cardiac Challenge, the annual fundraising bike ride from Cairns to Cooktown, raising funds for cardiac services in the Far North. FNQHF fundraising and marketing manager Glenys Duncombe said the boys’ achievements were truly admirable and showed what could be done when people put their minds to it. “This ride changes lives – not just in terms of the fundraising and what it does, but how it changes the participants’ lives and it’s really wonderful to watch the growth and development of these young men,” Ms Duncombe said. After completing the 333km journey in September, the 2 Deadly Treadlys are already making plans for 2018 and hope to expand.

At Home With.. MICHAEL HEALY Entering the Brinsmead home Michael Healy shares with his wife, Trudi, and their two kids, Zoe and Jack, a couple of border collies quickly gather round to see who the newcomers are. The pup, Chloe, is thrust into my arms as I’m instructed to not let her run onto the road. It was a task that was easier said than done. Within moments of our arrival, it’s obvious that these hounds play a major role in this family. They are in and out of the family home, involved in conversations and the recipients of absent-minded pats. In the backyard, Zoe and Jack are kicking a soccer ball around the backyard whilst Michael and Trudi get comfortable watching over their family. The backyard footy is hilariously hampered by pup Chloe’s involvement, as she intercepts the ball at any opportunity and nips at whatever she can reach. Nothing is out of bounds for this pooch. I comment on the handy footwork demonstrated by the kids, and Trudi thanks Stratford Dolphins Football Club. The conversation veers onto kids and sports. Michael explains that his love of sports started as a young kid, growing up on the north shore of Sydney. “Both my brothers were asthmatics, so my parents always pushed us to swim - surf club, squad, anywhere there was water. From there, I went on to try most sports, including a lot of rugby. Sport honed a very competitive spirit in me.” It is this competitive spirit that has seen Michael steer the Quicksilver Group to become one of the true success stories of the local, state and national tourism industry. “I was working in The Rocks in Sydney in 1992 when I was transferred to Palm Cove. I jumped on my motorbike and rode 32
| w w w. o a s i s m a g a z i n e . c o m . a u
to Cairns. I was young and looking for an adventure. When I arrived, I started working at the Palm Cove Travelodge, before moving over to Quicksilver in 1994.” As the Group Director of Sales and Marketing for the one of Cairns’ largest employers, Michael is responsible for the revenue of the company. He proudly boasts that the Quicksilver Group is widely recognized as a business with a heart. “Every single year, we run a Christmas Charity Drive to bring some festive cheer to the disadvantaged areas of the community. I believe that big business has a moral obligation to contribute to the society which has allowed it to flourish. I don’t think charity falls solely at the responsibility of government. We also run a Scholarship program for our staff who have kids at Uni.” “If we start leaving groups of people behind, and lose our community conscience, we will see huge social issues emanate,” he furthers. Michael’s community conscience is what ultimately saw him named as the Labor Party candidate for the seat of Cairns at the upcoming state election. It’s also what made him put his hand up for board positions with Tourism Palm Cove, Port Douglas Daintree Tourism, Tourism Tropical North Queensland and why, until recently, he was the Chair of Access Community Housing. “Since my nomination as the Labor Candidate, I’ve also stepped aside as Director of Tourism Events Queensland,” he explains with a sense of duty. “It might have been seen as a conflict of interest.”
“I’ve been volunteering on community boards for over 20 years, because I believe that we will be judged as a society by the manner in which we look after our weakest.” “Our public positions need people with a set of life skills, and given that tourism fundamentally drives this city, I think Cairns would benefit being represented by someone with a thorough understanding of the industry.” “We need people who can get the best out of people. At the moment, the city’s key stakeholders are not communicating and that’s ridiculous. To get better outcomes, we need a healthy respect towards each other. You’ll always get a lot further in life with a jar of honey, rather than a gallon of vinegar.” We follow Michael to his office, a room adorned with books, and back dropped with framed photographs, each showing significant achievements in his life - sport, travel, family and work, all weaving the fabric of what drives him. “I’m a prolific reader,” he explains. “Any genre, I’ll read it.”
I SHARE THE FRUSTRATIONS OF MANY PEOPLE WHEN IT COMES TO POLITICIANS AND POLITICS.
“And I love history. Almost as much as I love to travel. I’ve been lucky enough to have done a huge amount of traveling. My job takes me all over the world, often for several weeks at a time. For me, my appreciation of Cairns has grown the more I’ve travelled.” When asked what he sees at the future of Cairns, Michael leans forward in excitement. “I believe we need another industry in Cairns, and it makes perfect sense to me that it should be education,” he says. “In fact, it is so simple that it appears difficult.” Michael starts reciting statistics. “We’ve got two universities, sixteen English language colleges, a third university coming in, we’ve got 32000 students coming through Cairns each year. CQU have just announced they intend to spend $57M on expanding their facilities here because they’ve blown their five-year plan out of the water! JCU have just spent $40 million on a new accommodation facility. We are so well positioned as a city to be able to capitalize on this. We should be selling ourselves as an International and Domestic Education hub.” He continues, “Having a student population means the service industry would grow. They will need fuel, haircuts, furniture, they’ll be eating out. Property prices will increase due to the growing demand for accommodation.” “But it also makes us attractive as an international destination. Students establish wonderful relationships with the city where they study, and that word of mouth is invaluable for our tourism sector. And once that happens, our assets and us as a region, grow.” Back outside, the family - including the dogs - are gathering on the patio. The setting sun calling the soccer match to an early end. Michael continues to discuss his passion for the future of Cairns, as he sees it. “There’s so much possibility. We need to attract more private enterprise. We’ve just had a Ghassan
Aboud of the GA Group come in and drop half a billion dollars into our economy. That’s a game changer; it’s an extremely positive initiative for our City, of which many will benefit. And I’m ready to fight for more of that. I’ve got no doubt it’ll be a challenge, but I’m up for it. Trudi smiles and contributes, “We need people with drive and vision, and Michael’s certainly got that.” Challenging situations are nothing new to this family. Five years ago, the family faced their biggest challenge. Michael protectively wraps his arm around Trudi’s shoulders and explains, “I was just about to head off on a work trip when Trudi was diagnosed with leukaemia.” “She spent five weeks in quarantine at Cairns Hospital. It was heartbreaking. We couldn’t touch her. She was behind a glass window.” The conversation pauses, as the couple share a silent glance; an affirmation of strength. “To see your best mate - your soul mate - and have her totally at the mercy of the hospital staff …” Michael drifts off from his sentence. “Well, I simply cannot sing high enough praises for the team at the hospital. Definitely the doctors and nurses, but also the cleaners, kitchen staff, the office staff and gardeners. Everyone. The staff were bloody sensational.” Michael explains that after Trudi’s blood was stabilized, she spent every day for the next two years at the hospital. “When her treatment was complete, we donated a couple of iPads to the ward. Just as a bit of a “thank you”, and to help future patients and their families. “Life is always about giving back.” Issue 20 |

Ribbons Ladies Game
FISHING TOURNAMENT We are blessed to live in a unique natural environment, which has so much to offer. The Tablelands, rainforests, a lovely city nestled on Trinity Inlet surrounded by mountain ranges, all bordered by a magnificent coastline and ocean. This ocean not only boasts the Great Barrier Reef but some of the best fishing in the world. It’s little wonder that it should also be the home of Australia’s most popular ladies game fishing tournament. On the first weekend in December each year, these sparkling tropical waters play host to a unique event - the Ribbons Ladies Game Fishing Tournament. The idea was borne in 1983, when a
WE ARE BLESSED TO LIVE IN A UNIQUE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, WHICH HAS SO MUCH TO OFFER
group of adventurous women, local skippers and deckies came up with the idea of running a tournament for women only at the end of the marlin season. It allowed them experience what was seen as a predominately male recreational pastime. It was designed to be a tournament of fun, fishing and friendship run by women for women. From these humble beginnings, this popular tournament goes from strength to strength each year, with this year’s tournament expected to be bigger and better than ever. The Ribbons Tournament attracts over 120 senior and junior anglers, fishing aboard more than 40 boats, numbers which rival those of mixed-gender tournaments, such as the Lizard Island Classic and the Townsville Billfish Challenge. Teams consist of between two and four anglers from interstate, overseas, Cairns and the surrounding districts. This year, the tournament will be held from December 1 – 3. Ribbons is timed to coincide with the end of the heavy tackle season as a “wind down” and a more relaxed day for the skippers and deckhands on the charter boats, yet still providing excellent conditions for catching fish. Many anglers are local, but each year around 30 intrepid women travel nationally to attend, and there
has even been international teams from Japan and the USA. Ribbons has evolved as a huge 3 day event on the Cairns social calendar and in addition to the one day fishing, teams come together for merriment at our pretournament briefing and our postfishing Awards Presentation Gala. Hours before the first lure is cast, the competition has already begun with the frivolity of the annual Ribbons Sailpast on Trinity Inlet. From the crack of dawn the Cairns Marlin Marina is a hive of activity with teams decorating their boats for the spectacular sailpast, each vying to be judged a winner in the best decorated boat category. The public is invited to spectate and lend a hand to judges, with the best vantage point on the return of the most northern finger of the marina. Once past the judges, decorations are dismantled before heading into the sunrise for the serious business of fishing. At the end of the day, a glass of champagne greets the weary anglers at the weigh-in gantry in the evening and quite a few stories, some taller than others, are told of the day’s events. Family, friends and the general public are welcome to view the girl’s edible catches, such as Spanish Mackerel, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and Tuna. All Billfish such as Black Marlin and
Sailfish are Tag & Release only. On Sunday 3rd December, the ladies remove their hats and sunglasses, and dress up for the Awards Gala to be held at the Cairns Convention Centre. Approximately 350 guests will be entertained over dinner with tall tales and tournament highlights, and the presentation of trophies for the category winners. The Ribbons Tournament is a teriffic opportunity for female anglers to have a go at landing one of the big ones, and you are invited to get in touch with the Ribbons Ladies Game Fishing Club for more information at info@ribbons. org.au or on www.ribbons.com.au

SUE
STEPH
What is your ideal work party you would like to celebrate with your staff? SUE: In Radio, we all work different shifts round the clock so our challenge is not only finding a time we can all be ‘off air’ together, but finding somewhere our team’s high profile faces won’t be recognised as they let their hair down! Any ideas for this year would be great! STEPH: My ideal Christmas party would be a lovely dinner out with my husband and work colleagues. There is nothing better than a relaxing night off after a stressful year to celebrate all the milestones and laugh about the bloopers. VLASTA: Ideal Christmas; now you have my juices flowing! It would certainly have to be a weekender getaway either to an exclusive retreat or on a cruise. The way we usually celebrate with our team is a kick ass dinner party at our property with professional chefs and service staff, crazy games, great food and wine.
What is the best / craziest work party story you’ve heard? VLASTA: ‘Back in the days’ we used to have some of the best and craziest parties with our large temp workforce team. Once we hired a house, a DJ, and had a rave weekend. People came and went as they pleased; some fell down. Hahaha it was a long time ago! We would never attempt that now, of course! The rules are different. Another year, we took close to 100 of the team to Fitzroy Island and there have been some secret bus trips to different locations. The guys still talk about them now, years afterwards.
SUE: One funny (not funny) was the Christmas party where we chartered a boat. Turns out it was the captain’s first trip ... ever. We ended up in the middle of a mini summer cyclone. Amidst staff donning life jackets, one of us who actually knew boats had to take over & ferry all onboard to safety. I think that’s the only party ever to finish before the tab did! STEPH: I haven’t ever been involved in any crazy work parties. Honest. Of course, we might have to break that tradition this year, so I have a story to tell!
What’s your best professional tip for getting through the party season unscathed? STEPH: Don’t drink. Just kidding! But certainly, load up on vitamins and drink plenty of water, before, during and after the party. It’s hard to completely relax when you have kids but the year will be over before you know it so slow down and enjoy the moment. VLASTA: Everyone enjoys a good party especially at the end of a hard year. When organising a party here are couple of things that employers need. Control alcohol consumption- Do NOT have a free for all bar, ensure that the party is in a safe environment, have a start and finish time and make sure the staff get home safe. For the employees: don’t over indulge, have fun and stay sensible, don’t talk shop and be respectful towards others. SUE: Well, for me living at the beaches is foolproof! Too expensive to take a cab home so I always drive to every party (and there are a few). I drink sparkling water & lime in a short glass so I look like I’m partying but safe to drive home & work the next day

JODI NELSON AND KIM MARSDEN Small business and not for profit organisations catering to tourists in Tropical North Queensland now have an affordable websites solution to promote their services. We live in an online world. Quite literally, all the information in the world, is right at our fingertips. And through all this information, finding a way to be noticed above your competitors is a constant struggle. Local siblings, Jodi Nelson and Kim Marsden are highly experienced in the digital marketing space. In 2000, their tourism industry experience and their lifelong love of the Far North, culminated in the launch of online travel agency, Travstar which has grown to cater to over 20,000 38

customers per year.
and Wordpress are not ideal.”
More recently, the innovative pair have dedicated the past three years into the creation of Local Tourism Network. An online platform for the tourism community.
“We have designed this platform predominantly for smaller tourism related organisations - those who struggle to find time for their web and online marketing. Small businesses in particular will really benefit, as it’s easy to use and affordable.
One standout feature of the platform is the new hosted website solution. “Small businesses and organisations who cater to tourists can now have a modern and mobile ready website to generate online sales for just $35 per month,” explains Jodi. “While operating our other business, travstar, we have been able to identify a lot of problems in the industry. Access to easy to use affordable websites is one of these problems. Setting up a website from scratch can be expensive and the DIY solutions such as WIX
As well as having a great website for your business Local Tourism Network also offers a suite of marketing and networking tools. Businesses have the option to post offers to LTN’s 24,000+ local subscribers in TNQ. And that number is growing weekly. LTN also has the largest network of public tourism websites in North Queensland, with approximately 800,000 users researching holidays in the region each year. “Any offers
posted on your own website can also be posted on our public websites with one click of the mouse”. And best of all, it’s not a commission based service. “Subscribers sign up at no charge, to see the local deals, and the site has the functionality to enable bookings direct with the operator. So, you’re cutting out the middle man, meaning less fees,” Kim explains. “Essentially, we are putting local businesses in the direct sight of their customers.” “We understand that start-up costs are crippling for fledgling businesses and Not For Profits. In fact, ongoing expenses are a challenge for all businesses. This is the perfect opportunity for these businesses to boost their awareness and engagement with locals and inbound tourists. And with prices starting at only $35 per month, it’s a really affordable option.” The pair are strongly supported by Lily Stacey, who manages the social media and marketing of the business. Kim is full of praise for their valued team member. “Lily’s social media knowledge is exceptional. She manages the outbound communications to our database, and oversees the LTN regional websites, which have over 50,000 visitors each month. She also manages the Cairns Events website, with 9000 visitors a month.” “In a single post, she has the capacity to reach 60,000 users.” “She quite literally has the majority of the far north population at her fingertips!” Kim said. As well as weekly deals, event listing options and extensive social media exposure, LTN members also have access to the latest tools and trends available to generate direct business on the web. The hosted website solution is just one aspect of Local Tourism Network. As a whole Local Tourism Network is a solution for entire tourism regions. “It’s a membership based model,” explains Jodi “Over the years I have spent a lot of time focusing on internet marketing” Search Engine Pay Per Click systems have become so expensive and complex that they are virtually unusable for small operators to drive direct business. At the same time international Online Travel Agencies like booking.com, viator and expedia have come to dominate the online booking space inspiring price motivated holiday planning. On top of the discounting the high commissions don’t leave the small tourism operators with much to put back into their business. Local Tourism Network drives customers direct to try and keep the money in the region. “We’ve applied a decade of digital marketing experience to launch Local Tourism Network, and we’re really Excited about for how far it will go.” Issue 20 |

C laire Tucker
THROUGH THE RAINBOW
August 12th was a day, much like any other. Claire Tucker and her friends were excited to be catching up at the Cairns Cup. At the end of the day, an innocent series of events saw Claire separated from her friends, and, seeking a taxi, she made the fatal decision to walk from Cannon Park along Mulgrave Road towards Earlville Shopping Centre. At Clarkes Creek, Claire fell two metres onto the concrete culvert, and she sustained serious injuries. Despite her courageous fighting spirit, Claire lost her struggle to survive less than a week later, leaving behind a beautiful little boy, Zephyr, just 5 years of age. Claire was a popular face around Redlynch, where she ran her beauty business, and highly regarded in the local netball and touch football communities. 40
| w w w. o a s i s m a g a z i n e . c o m . a u
The outpouring since her accident, from individuals and businesses, has been immense. In the way that Cairns does, the community has banded together since this dreadful tragedy to ensure that Zephyr will be able to enjoy the life Claire would have wanted for him. Claire’s longtime friend, Selena Taylor established a GoFundMe Page when it was obvious her injuries were substantial. She knew that if Claire was to survive, life was going to be very different for Zephyr. “Our Claire is the most kind-hearted and generous person, all those that crossed her path fell in love with her infectious and energetic nature. Regardless of her own situation, she would always put others needs before her own,” Selena explained.
The page has since raised more than $55000. Make no mistake, Cairns has a very big heart. A Family Fun Day and Fundraiser was held on September 24th at the Red Beret Hotel, who have offered enormous support to Claire, her family and friends throughout this ordeal. A raffle with donated prizes in excess of $10000 is circulating. At the Cairns Amateurs races, which were held just a few weeks after Claire’s passing, local transport business showed their support, with Tropic Wings, FNQ Airport Shuttles and Sunbus coming together to provide additional services and donating all proceeds to the fundraising efforts. Claire is the eldest child of John Tucker and Lesley Hill-Allen, and has a younger brother Glen. She attended Caravonica State School
and then moved onto Smithfield High. Claire’s mother describes her daughter as eccentric and different, explaining she liked to stand far outside the box. “As a teenager, Claire competed in rock drilling competitions and played rugby union,” Lesley reveals. “She loved fashion and enjoyed dress-up parties. For her 21st birthday party we all had to come in outrageous opp shop clothes. She loved bright colours. The inside of her house is painted a range of colours, from lime green to pink.” “Whether it was teaching me to make soaps from natural products, or wrangling snakes from her chook pen, Claire didn’t know the meaning of conservative. Everything she did was done at 100%.”
Claire believing they were more than enough,” Hayley explains. Claire’s clients echo these sentiments: After a treatment with Claire, you were left energised, as she made sure you had a real connection. She didn’t engage in polite chit chat. Over the years, Claire became interested in organic and natural products, and she gradually integrated them into her own lifestyle.
SHE WAS LIKE NO ONE ELSE I’VE EVER MET
After leaving high school, Claire went on to study beauty therapy. “One of the first things we learned was that it is best practice to not to talk about personal issues, either your own or your clients. It was considered unprofessional. This never sat well with Claire and it was always a personal coaching and therapy session when you were in the room with her,” recalls Hayley Smith, who met Claire whilst studying. After graduating, Claire worked in a variety of salons in the region, but her goal was always to have her own home-based business. So that’s what she did. Claire was only 20 years old when she brought her home in Redlynch and went about building her dream. At an age when many of her friends were travelling and partying, Claire was working on her business. Many of her current clients had been with her from the beginning. “She was also always very humble and open about her own life, with a wonderful sense of humour and a special way of making her clients feel at ease. People walked out of a session with
Hayley reflects on Claire’s innate nurturing nature, “When Zephyr came along, she really did step into the most precious role of her life. Always the doting mum, she made sure he never went without and encouraged him to have an open heart like her and to be a free thinker.” “They did everything together,” Leslie continues. “When she did the Blue Arrow when Zephyr was a few months old, she carried him in a baby backpack. When she played Touch Football, he would join in the warm-up training sessions. “ “She saw the best in people. It was wonderful to be near her.” “She wasn’t always on time, and she would never choose housework over enjoying quality time with friends and family,” her mum laughs. “She lived many lifetimes in her short 36 years and really knew how to seize the day. Knowing it takes a village to raise a child, Claire’s friends have vowed to keep those beautiful memories alive and make sure Zephyr continues to remember just how lucky he is to call Claire his mum. “She was just loved by all and had the brightest smile around. If there was a community cause to support, she was the first to offer a hand.” This support continues, even after her last breath, and as Claire was an organ donor, a piece of her sparkle, determination and grit will now guide someone else’s life.

Inline… HOCKEY BLUEY’S FORESIGHT JOHN FORSYTH
Inline Hockey became popular in Cairns in the mid 1990s and the city has not failed to produce top Australian players ever since. Cairns is the adopted home of the current Australian Women’s team captain, Kylie Grevell, who has recently returned from the World Cup Roller Games in China. Originally hailing from Gladstone, Kylie’s move to Cairns five years ago has been a bonus for local skaters. No doubt, Kylie’s 20+ years of experience in the sport is helping the younger players reach their potential as she is also a highly accredited coach. Kylie is proud to have the honour of captaining the team as they achieved their highest world rankings - placing eighth overall, a marked improvement on previous achievements. “Team bonding is slightly challenging, 42

when your team members come from all over the country,” Kylie says. “We improved our world ranking this year at the World Cup, mainly because we have been together as a team for a few years now. We know how each other thinks.” She was joined in China by Cairns skaters, Emily Conley, who represented Australia in the Junior Women’s team, Des Sutton in the Australian Masters World Cup team, and Byron Maher in the Junior Men’s team. Cairns was well represented at the National Titles in Victoria in September, with eleven individual players attending in a variety of divisions. The youngsters, Tuskan Sheridan (U9s), Ryder Sheridan (U13s) and Eli Reid (U15s) travelled with Jeremy Coates, Darby Conley, Byron Maher,
Emily Conley, Kylie Grevell, David Elms, Scott Wingate and Des Sutton showed the southerners what Cairns is made of. “I am so proud of all these kids. They have worked hard, they know what’s required at training and they go over and above the regular training to improve their skills,” Kylie beams with pride. No one can question the dedication and commitment of these kids, especially as they were faced with the prospect of the closure of the Cairns Skating Rink last year. I look forward to watching the progress of these youngsters and no doubt there are others in the Cairns skating community who will also be destined for the green and gold. Be well, Bluey

Such a… HEADACHE of 5 things you can do at home to try and nip that headache in the bud!
WELLBEING SUZANNE RATH Wellness Embodied
Treating headaches is probably one of the most rewarding aspects of my role as a physiotherapist. Many people can get away with popping a couple of over the counter pain killers and getting on with their day. But for those of us who have suffered from severe head or face pain, or eye symptoms which can include light sensitivity and blurred vision, we understand how debilitating a headache can be. One of the reasons I’ve been so successful with treating headaches is that I work using a very specific technique to assess and treat the top three bones of the neck, pioneered by the Watson Headache institute. Other techniques I’ve found effective include craniosacral therapy, medical acupuncture and specialised rehab exercises. Interestingly, some of these can even give great relief to people with symptoms of vertigo and post-concussion syndrome. However, we all lead busy lives and sometimes we need a quick way to relieve pain quickly, without waiting for a physio appointment! I’ve compiled a list
ACUPRESSURE The upper trapezius muscles (on the top of your shoulders) are one of the groups which can refer pain to your head- if you find a tender muscle point (“trigger point”) that’s referring pain, press and hold it for 90 seconds to see if the pain will ease afterwards. Most people with headaches will have tenderness and possibly swelling in the muscles at the base of the skull, which can also be massaged to give relief. In those whose head pain may be aggravated by chronic sinus issues, I use medical acupuncture with great success- but you can sometimes get results from applying pressure with your fingertips (acupressure) to these points also. FOAM ROLLER/ BELT/ TENNIS BALLS There are lots of ways to use tennis balls to release trigger points. Foam rollers can also be used to loosen stiff thoracic spines and self-massage some tight muscles of the body. On my website, I’ve made a video showing 2 techniques for self-relief of headaches (http:// www.wellnessembodiedcairns.com/ physiovideos/2-short-techniquesfor-headache-management). I advise these should only be done if they relieve pain within the first couple of minute and certainly not to the point of aggravating pain. POSTURE Most of us have heard it before, but poor posture really does influence everything
Suzanne Rath BSc. (Hons) Physio., MSc. Sport & Exercise Med.
from pain levels to mood. Unfortunately, many of us spend too long sitting and at desks, with chins poked forwards and deep neck stabilising muscles which are getting weaker as a result. A physiotherapy assessment will be able to correct your posture and workstation, accurately diagnose any muscle imbalances you may have developed from poor postures and advise you on ways to strengthen to prevent future pain. ESSENTIAL OILS I’m a Wellness advocate for Do Terra and personally, I swear by their Ice Blue blend- I had an accident which broke my jaw several years ago and get instantaneous relief from applying this directly to the site of pain. But there are lots of other oil combinations you can tryeither in a diffuser to clear your head (try DoTerra Easy Air), on your pulse points (try DoTerra AromaTouch), or massaged into tender muscles. DIET AND HYDRATION Drinking more water is probably one of the most frequently given pieces of advice for those suffering from headaches, because it works. Often headaches are due to blood vessel constriction- more fluid in the body can mean more blood flow. It’s also worth examining your diet- gluten and wheat intolerances are commonly cited causes of headaches. There are many excellent professionals such as naturopaths, dieticians and doctors with an interest in integrative medicine who can help you to identify if any of these are triggers for you and assist you in making changes to your diet.

No one, that’s who! And the team at Face Today MediClinic are here to help you say sayonara to your trouble spots, for good. Nicki Belle, founder of Face Today MediClinic disagrees. “Well, everyone needs fat – it’s essential to life - but not excessive amounts, especially on your chin, arms, tummy and thighs. “ Do you struggle with excess weight and feel like you’ve tried everything to lose those problem areas? If you’re sick of thinking about it, and ready to start doing it, the team at Face Today MediClinic has combined a complete holistic program to help you get the best possible results for your body, by targeting fat from every angle. TECHNOLOGY – KICKSTART YOUR PROGRESS By starting with a device-focused treatment regime, you are giving your body the ultimate kickstart. The technology available is designed to
disrupt the fat cells. This means they’ve been specifically targeted and heated with laser technology, and are ready to be eliminated by the body naturally with help from gentle exercise and diet. Essentially they will be metabolised by the body. The 3D TruSculpt has been shown to achieve a loss of over 20cm from the abdominal area in just one treatment. Optimal results, of course, are achieved when supported with diet and some form of exercise, and the exciting outcome is you have effectively eliminated some fat from that targeted area for good. Face Today is the first to have technology of this kind in Australia, and patients are already providing fantastic feedback. ENERGY OUT – EXERCISE Don’t instantly think about Bootcamps and marathons – let’s be realists. Start with something you know you can maintain, like power walking a few times per week. By choosing to incorporate resistance training adds ideal support to your muscle and bone strength as we age. “We are so passionate about promoting a holistic approach to overall results we are pleased to introduced our Allied Health Care professionals who can provide you with online personalised consultations to establish your own exercise regime that you can do in the comfort of your own home or at a your local gym.” Says Nicki Belle, founder at Face Today MediClinic”.

diet. If you are wanting to see serious results, fast, then it’s worth learning about our internal nutritional solutions we have to complement your external treatment. Part of eliminating the disrupted fat, following the TruSculpt 3D treatments, is incorporating a system to assist with elimination, detoxification and nourishing foods to assist with boosting your metabolic rate and enhanced youthful ageing. Nicki says “The exciting part of our nutritional solution is its ability to target dangerous internal visceral fat which is the fat located internally around the organs.” This complements the external treatment by the 3D Trusculpt, which targets fat located below the skin, ultimately providing a full body fat disrupting solution.
With zero downtime necessary and minimal discomfort, the TruSculpt 3D targets fat on the tummy, hips, thighs, arms and under the chin. • Destroys fat cells allowing them to be metabolised naturally
Nicki is excited about this new opportunity to support wellness “Our online Allied Health professionals can also support and guide you with nutritional education to complement your exercise regime in combination with your Trusculpt 3D results. What exactly is Intimate Wellness? As soon as we think of Intimacy we think of close, physical contact, warm, intimate relationships, or spirited lustful play. But how many of us get to enjoy that ideal as we age, or after childbirth has challenged our intimate parts? Here is the disruption! We expect a solution is unlikely, unavailable, complicated, or fraught with negative side effects. Not true! Yes, we are talking about female incontinence, dryness, sexual discomfort, ageing of the vagina, lack of orgasm and perhaps lips we don’t like the look of. Gut… FEELING INNER HEALTH Christiane Wagner Registered Nurse & Rehabilitation Therapist
I have always believed that treatments should focus on the whole individual to address diverse problems and emotions, and support clients to find a balanced, healthy life style. In 1991, one of my family members was born without a bladder. The decision was made to implant the urethra into the colon. Taking care of the pH and gut was necessary to help this family member stay alive. I had several years of experience as an intensive care nurse and knew the pH mechanism and the importance of keeping the gut healthy. After excessive research, I did started on this pH/gut journey. What’s involved in this program? This program will be based on diagnostics and follow-up. You’ll be educated about the gut, digestion, metabolism, food, proven therapies of the historical past, like using an enema and so on. Furthermore, easy alkaline yummy recipes are provided. We do not
use artificial shakes.
that will be.
We will evaluate your pH at the beginning and end of the program, and again three months later. You will learn how to measure your own pH and gut mechanisms so that you can continue this lifestyle independently after the program.
Sometimes changing a little as a start is better than being 100% unhealthy. In my experience, as soon as people feel improvement, they are keen to do more, so will find time to add more of the provided options.
You will learn which foods produce alkalinity or acidity in your body and the difference between alkaline fasting and predominant alkaline eating. You’ll be guided through the whole process. At the end, you’ll be able to cook your alkaline and predominantly alkaline meals independently, which will keep you in long-term good health.
I am looking for individuals who want to make lifestyle changes so that they can feel the best they have ever felt and keep their health in the long term.
Sounds too complicated? It’s really not. You will learn the basics, which you can follow straight away, and all the other options are available to add on at your own pace. Don’t stress yourself; just start slowly and you’ll notice results. Feel how empowering

Placement - it really is an art form all to itself. It is the one key factor that can make a space come together seamlessly … or make it a complete disaster. For instance, if a painting or mirror is a mere few centimetres too high, too low, or not centred correctly, it can completely throw a room of balance. I have never been one for following trends, as I believe that style is undefined and immeasurable, and a beautifully decorated room never dates. Digital Disruption ON QUEENSLAND ROADS LEGAL LISA JENSZ Associate
Smart phone ownership across Australia has grown considerably over the past five years with 84% of Australians now owning a smart phone. According to a study in 2016, 1 in 10 people use their smart phone while driving, despite the fact that using your phone while driving is illegal. It’s common sense that taking your eyes off the road to read a text, google an address or answer a call can put your life at risk as well as the lives of your passengers and other road users. Using Your Mobile Phone When Driving Is Illegal In Queensland it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving. This means that you cannot hold a phone next to your ear when driving or use your mobile phone even when you are stopped in traffic. Believe it or not “use” of your phone even includes turning your phone on
or off or reading a text. You can, however, answer calls and talk on the phone provided your car has hands free or Bluetooth capability. You cannot simply answer your mobile phone using your hand and put your phone on loudspeaker. Learners and P Platers – What are the Rules? When drivers are just getting the hang of using our roads we want their full attention on the road. For that reason learner drivers and P1 provisional drivers under age 25 are not allowed to use the hands-free, Bluetooth or loudspeaker function.
Set yourself some boundaries so that following the rules becomes a good habit. Your safety is important so if you are a passenger in a car and the driver is using their mobile phone, ask them not to. Safely download and use an app specifically designed to prevent drivers from being distracted by their mobile phone when driving. Put your mobile phone in your bag on the backseat of your car. That way if your phone rings or beeps you won’t be tempted to grab it.
If you are a passenger in a car being driven by a learner driver or P1 provisional driver you are not allowed to use the loud speaker function on a mobile phone while in the car.
Talk to your friends and family about their habits on the road. Having an open discussion about accidents and being distracted can be a good way to think clearly about how one moment of inattention can change someone’s life forever.

Business Liaison
ASSOCIATION
This is the time of year when things get really hectic for the Business Liaison Association. CQUNIVERSITY BREAKFAST CQUniversity recently staged a breakfast at their city campus for students interested in careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). It was a really successful event with very positive feedback from students. Speakers were Jessica Kahl a current CQUni student studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Diploma of Professional Practice (Co-op Engineering) and Lydia O’Meara, a CQUni Bachelor of Medical Science (Nutrition) student. The students particularly enjoyed the Marshmallow Challenge where they had to build the highest tower using spaghetti, string, sticky tape – and a marshmallow on the top. One week later, the Defence Force Recruiting breakfast took place at Rydges Esplanade. Students loved the chance to talk to representatives from the Army, Navy and Airforce.
COMMITTEE FOR WASTE REDUCTION
Save the date The Careers and Employment Expo will take place on Thursday 24 May 2018. This is the only event of its kind in far north Queensland and attracts over 3000 people each year. If you would like to book at stand, please mark the date in your diary now.
IT’S TIME TO BE REWARDED
Congratulations
Congratulations to Jill Morris from Simply Hampers on celebrating 11 years in business with a cocktail party at the Pullman Cairns International with the theme Christmas at Tiffanys. Jill is a long-term sponsor of the Business Liaison Association and it was a wonderful night with lots of her gorgeous hampers on display.
With over $60,000 in prizes on offer, it’s time to head to the Awards and Competitions page on the Business Liaison Association website. For senior secondary school students, this is an excellent opportunity made possible by so many Cairns businesses. Awards are available in a range of subject areas including a new award – the Creative Radio Award. Sponsored by Star 102.7, students in year 11 and 12 are asked to create, produce and record a 30 second commercial about one of the Business Liaison Association sponsors. The winning ad will go to air on Star 102.7 – and the winning student will receive a 6 week internship at the station.
We couldn’t do what we do without the generous support of our sponsors. PARTNER

Busting the… BUSINESS MYTHS partnership. There are certain reasons that your friends are your friends and they don’t necessarily go well with conducting business. For one thing, friends usually don’t have the same work habits.
BUSINESS
SOLUTION: Before you consider forming a partnership, get a really good solicitor who will remind you that people act funny when money is involved.
KIRSTEN LOWIS Business Advisor
Unfortunately, some small business owners believe a lot of myths about how to run their business. These are things they assume to be true, but when put into practice, simply don’t work. Here are 5 common business myths, and some home truths about each of them. I’m a good cook, so I should open a restaurant. There is more to running a restaurant than having a good recipe and being able to cook. You will also be involved in buying, budgeting, payroll, managing employees, and paying tax... just to name a few.
Knowledge is power. If knowledge is power, then librarians must be the most powerful people in the world. Certainly no disrespect to librarians, they’re great and valuable, but unless knowledge is applied, it’s just potential. SOLUTION: “Do or do not. There is no try” - Yoda Profit is all that matters in business. Revenue is vanity. Net profit is sanity. Cash[flow] is king! Profit can just be a trick of accounting whereas cashflow controls whether you can stay in business. Many businesses fail due to cash flow challenges, even though they are profitable.
SOLUTION: Buy an established business rather than starting from scratch and read “The E-Myth Revisited”.
SOLUTION: See your accountant about ways to improve cashflow. A cashflow forecast is a must-do before starting a business. Need help? Contact me.

Businesses that look successful, are successful.
It’s easy to look at a business and assume that, because the owner drives a big, black 4WD and their website is plastered with testimonials from extremely happy clients, they go home and swim in a pool full of money. The fact is, it’s impossible to tell how a business is doing from the outside. SOLUTION: Before you consider purchasing a business, (buy the how to sell a business workbook, and) gather up all of the critical information on the business from the seller/broker and promptly have your accountant and solicitor conduct due diligence.

Driving for Uber isn’t a job,… IT’S A BUSINESS ACCOUNTANT CHARISSE RUSSELL Director
So, you’ve decided that driving for Uber will be a great way to earn a second income in your spare time, or is a full-time job that will pay the bills. Either way, you need to go into it with the understanding that this isn’t just a part time job, or something that you can just pick and put down when you feel like it. Driving for Uber is a Business. And as the driver, you are the person responsible for every aspect of running it, and at the end of the financial year you will need to have all of your business records ready and up to scratch to lodge your business tax return. So, what will that mean for you in the everyday running of your new business? Firstly, you will need to establish your business structure and register it with ASIC. Unless you are planning an Uber Empire, you will generally set up as a Sole Trader. It is the cheapest business structure to set up and run, and when
you use your name as the business name you don’t need to register it. Secondly, you will need to apply for an ABN. Driving for Uber is a business and you will never convince the ATO that you are driving drunk strangers
WITH THE RIGHT HELP AT THE OUTSET, DRIVING FOR UBER CAN BE A HELPFUL SECOND INCOME STREAM
around at 2am for the sheer joy of it. You will also need to apply for GST as the $75,000 voluntary GST registration threshold DOESN’T APPLY to share drivers. You will need to be charging
GST on every fare you take and passing it onto the ATO when you lodge your BAS every month, quarter or year. And then there are the records you will need to keep. By now you should know whether you have this in the bag or desperately need to seek professional advice on running a business, and by that, I mean, please see your Accountant before it’s too late. The 1st of June 2018 will be a bit too late to finally find out about what expenses you needed to keep a record of and what Logs you needed to keep, and that the ATO have been fining you for each of the BAS’s that you forgot to lodge. With the right help at the outset, driving for Uber can be a helpful second income stream, as long as you understand going into it that it is a business that you are responsible for, and not a part time job that someone else will look after.

TRAVEL I STILL PREFER MY LADY OF THE SEA TO BE PARKED OUT AT SEA,”
- WENDY
YACHTSTAY The idea behind Cairns based yacht accommodation concept, Yachtstay, was simple enough: pay the mortgage and the mooring fees. And with that simple brief, Wendy Smart offered her yacht as short term accommodation on AirBNB. They were amazed to find that travellers included sleeping on a yacht as one of their “must-do” experiences in Cairns. Her first boat, Panama, was initially moored in the stick moorings, and guests were ferried to their accommodation in a dingy. After the initial shock subsided, the looks of fear were replaced with looks of awe, when they realised that relaxation and excellent views were in abundance onboard.
Another boat was added to the fleet four months later, proving the theory that people love the idea of yacht life, but don’t want the commitment.“I still prefer my Lady of the Sea to be parked out at sea,” explains Wendy.
What have been some of your most memorable moments hosting guests? There are so many memorable moments I can reflect upon. The first guests we ever had trashed the boat and they thought nothing of it. It broke my heart. I have since moved personal items from my boat and rarely spend time on it. But having guests treat our boats like hotel rooms is heartbreaking. I treat these boats like an extension of my own home, so I try to be just as homely as possible with facilities and service as if
they were staying in my home. And I’m constantly shocked how guests can use more than 1000 litres of water in one night! That stuff doesn’t just fall out of the sky, you know! {Oh, wait …} On the upside, I don’t need to go to the gym anymore - I’m buff from boat life. And every time we see the big cruise ships passing, it’s magic!
What’s next? I think Yachtstay needs separation from AirBNB, and it’s certainly on the radar for it to be its own accommodation platform at some stage in the future. But at the moment, Yachtstay is now a marina based model and AirBNB is our shopfront. We have our own boats, and also offer accommodation management services for other vessels.”
