In economics, the term ‘critical mass’ refers to the point at which a company becomes self-sustaining, and no longer needs additional investment to remain viable.
Publishers Note
And, despite having zero peer-reviewed data to make this claim, I firmly believe that, with parenting, four children can also be quantified as critical mass. The number at which you can add extra kids, and not even notice any difference.
The cake goes into the oven, the spoons are getting licked, and I pop out of the kitchen for just bit. Honestly, it was no more than five minutes. Upon my return, I found my three year old, Audrey, (or Awful, as I have since dubbed her) had taken the remaining 32 eggs from the benchtop cartons, and tossed them against the floor, the walls, the furniture. Basically, anything with a surface.
You see, I’ve got a swag of kids. Four of them, under 9 years of age.
Horrendously, that’s actually not the worst part of this story.
At the best of times, it’s complete and utter chaos. Every other time, you are actually in a warzone. And don’t even speak to me about the mess. But surprisingly, adding extra kids to the mix doesn’t add to the chaos. In fact, the more kids that are in our backyard, the easier the parenting task becomes.
The worst part of the story is I thought I had found all the broken eggs. Two days later, I learned that I hadn't. (*vomits*)
That was certainly my theory until recently, when my husband went away to work for a month. That’s when I realised that having a heap of kids is truly gruelling. It’s repetitive. And it’s bloody hard work. And, if making the twenty school lunches each week doesn’t bring you to your knees, the bedhopping, the arguing and the extracurricular activities actually will.
On a side note, it appears my husband does more around the house than I may actually give him credit for. (Sorry about that, dear!)

dozen eggs were on the kitchen bench.
Last weekend, the kids were pining for their dad, so I thought it would be a great idea to bake a cake. Now, I’m not famous for my domestic prowess, however it was a packet mix. What could possibly go wrong, right? Big families equal big weekly grocery orders. Ours includes 24 litres of milk, 50 bananas, 50 apples, 8 litres of yoghurt and 36 eggs, among other things. After using three of the eggs for the cake mix, and losing one of them to a sibling jostle, the remainder of the three
So, I’m convinced that being a FIFO wife sucks. It sucks eggs. Now, as I eagerly anticipate the return of my husband (which incidentally will occur precisely two minutes before I check into the nearest hotel for a few days of me-time) I want to send out a massive Christmas wish to all the families out there, no matter which way you are doing it. To the single parents, I take my hat off to you. To the nuclear families, the blended families, the extended families, the childless families, the grand-families and the fur-families. To the heroes raising kids that don’t have your DNA. The Oasis Magazine team wish all of you the most sensational time over the holidays! Stay happy, stay hydrated, stay safe, and try to stay sane! This is not a Joke THIS IS YOUR DUTY WARNER’S CORNER DAVE WARNER Star 102.7
A lot of people will try to tell you what the most important thing about being a father is. However - and this is pretty sad – a lot of people are wrong. Yeah, sure - providing a safe, loving and supportive environment enabling your kids to reach their full potential with educational opportunities and positive life experiences is important. Yeah nah, that’s not it. The reason we are here, fellow fathers, our primary role, is to teach our kids how to roll their eyes and wince at the same time.
What all that means is I’m well and truly licensed to tell Dad Jokes. I’m a fully paid-up, voting member. And if you have at least one, or one on the way, then it’s not just your God-given paternal right. It’s actually your duty, Sir.
the game of Scrabble for Christmas, for the sole purpose of enabling you to deliver what I believe to be the holy grail of Dad Jokes for the low low price of just $39.95. “Scrabble! It’s all good fun until someone loses an ‘I’.”(Get it?! Loses an eye … but the letter ‘I’. Get it?) Cue the eye roll with the wince. Next time they kids eating a banana, “I see you’re eating Beethoven’s favourite fruit… Ba-Na-Na-Naaah!”
By consistently and repetitively delivering the greatest gift we could ever give our children.
So, when you’re sitting around the Christmas table, embrace the power of the faded crepe paper crown. Be the King. It is your Court and you hold it. Ban the bonbon jokes and the toy whistles they rode in on, and supersize that lameness with one of your own home-baked turkeys.
The Dad Joke.
Dad’s Jokes work best in situ.
Then drop the mic. Dad Jokes aren’t just your right. They are your duty.
I have three, possibly four children. (It’s
With that in mind, maybe buy your kids
Merry Christmas.
And how do we do that?

a long story, but pre-kids, a psychic told me I was going to have four children to three different mothers. The score currently sits at three kids/two mothers, but I did spend a very loose five weeks in Norway in ’96.)

Motoring… MUST HAVES DRIVE LARA WILDE Wilde Drive
Life in the tropics is wonderful. Great beaches, fantastic roads winding along coastlines and through mountains, countless villages offering a selection of local produce and gourmet feasts and for the most part, magic weather all year round. Of course, as most of the world prepares for snow and the southern parts of Australia prepare themselves for stinking hot days that could make their world catch fire at the slightest provocation, we in the North prepare for the wet season. Here are some of my best ideas to care for your car this wet season. Be prepared. I always carry an umbrella, a chamois and a pair of thongs
MUSTS HAVE 6
| w w w. o a s i s m a g a z i n e . c o m . a u
in the car. The umbrella is obvious but make sure you shake off as much water as you can before you pack it away. A chamois is a great option to soak up any water that makes it into your car. And the thongs are so that if I have to leap across puddles to get out, my good heels don’t get soaked and slippery. Do not ever drive in your thongs though, they are very dangerous. Car storage. Do not store your car under a car cover. The cover, especially in the humidity, will sit against the paint and sweat. The sweat will leave tiny little bubbles in your paint work and ruin it. If you absolutely must put a cover on, try to find an inflatable one that sits off the car. Moisture absorber. If your car is parked for a while (this may be a pain in a daily driver) then sit a moisture box in the cab. I always put mine on the driver’s side so I won’t forget it and drive off sloshing water everywhere. You can buy these and the refillable beads fairly cheaply from most supermarkets and hardware stores. Check on the containers regularly so that when they fill up with water you can refresh them with new beads.
Mould inhibitor. After living in Northern Australia for many years, I have finally found a product that works in the battle against mould. If your car is parked for any length of time it is invaluable. The jar is left in the car and will kill any mould spores before they grow. It even has a pleasant minty smell. Mothballs. If you are parking your car for more than a week, mice will look at it like it is a 5 star resort. They will chew out wiring and upholstery not to mention leave your car smelling like dirty mice. The best way to keep mice at bay is old school Naphthalene flakes or mothballs. They are sold in convenient little 3 ball hangers. I hang them throughout the car and engine bay, and in my sedans I put one in the boot. The smell is horrible so you probably won’t drive off and forget about it but it will keep the mice out. Let Nature do her thing. On those lovely days when the sun is out and shining bright take advantage. Park out in the yard with all of the windows down or go for a drive in the sun with the windows down and let the fresh air and sunlight blast the mould and mustiness away.
Jonathan Uptin BBQ TIPS+TRICKS BBQs have always been synonymous with the summer season and for Nine News Regional Queensland presenter, Jonathan Uptin, this is one of his favourite pastimes. Here is a list of Jonno’s BBQ tips and tricks to get you through the festive season. Buy good quality meat: In Australia, we are so lucky to be spoilt for choice with fresh produce from our fantastic Aussie farmers. That’s why when I am cooking I stock up on quality Australian meat from my local butcher and grocer. Soak your wooden skewers in water: If you’re like me and always burn your wooden skewers, I have a great tip for you. A mate told me to submerge the skewers in water before adding the meat and veggies, this way the water stop the skewers from burning. If you have the time I recommend leaving the skewers in the water for around 20-30 minutes. Turning the meat: So, my kids like their BBQ meat well done but not chewy - tough ask, I say! To really nail this request, I find it’s best to only turn the meat once. I leave it to cook for a 5 or 10 minutes on the grill and close the lid. To poke or not to poke?: I am not going to lie, I have been guilty of giving my meat a little poke, to check if it’s cooked from time to time. The best advice I was given was to not poke the meat as it lets the natural juices out. This leads me to my next point… Rest your meat: Although your family and friends may be hungry, it’s best to let your meat rest for a few minutes before serving. I do this to ensure my meat is juicy and cooked through. Once I know everyone is ready to sit down and enjoy, I cut the meat! BBQ Pineapple and Mango: Okay, so this one is a little controversial but I love to BBQ pineapple and Mango slices. It’s a healthy way to add flavour to your meals and it gives an added burst of summer to the tastebuds. It also makes for a great way to liven up the classic fruit salad.
Catch Jonathan Uptin, co-presenter of Nine News Regional Queensland, at 6pm each weeknight. 8

Liz Richards… CRUNCHY CHRISTMAS GRANOLA
Think a healthy light Christmas Breakfast or a recovery Breakfast for Boxing day!
Oven: 75-100deg Baked: 3-4 hrs(while you wrap presents) INGREDIENTS: 6 cups rolled oats 1 cup pepitas 1 cup sunflower seeds 1 cups raw cashews or pistachios
1 cup brazil nuts chopped ½ to ¾ cup Cacao liquor – (Heavenly Cacao) or Cacao nibs 1 cup cranberries 1/2 cup naked Buderim Ginger – chopped finely if preferred 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup coconut oil or light tasting olive oil(you may need more depending on how quickly the oil soaks into rolled oats) 2 tsp ground ginger(more if you really want to punch it up)
Place all the dry ingredients in a large bowl with the spice and mix really well
METHOD:
Increase the amount of honey and you will be able to create clusters in this mix great for snacking!
Mix the wet ingredients together and warm - really slightly! - to bring them together a little better(if this mix is too warm it will soak into the oats rather than coat them)
Pour over the cooled honey mix and continue to mix until all the ingredients are well coated. Place on paper lined trays(I used 3 but will cook quicker if you have more) and spread as thinly as possible. A FEW LITTLE EXTRA TIPS TO MAKING AWESOME GRANOLA:
Always used rolled oats or whole oats - this doesn’t work with quick oats or half oats
Bahn Mi and Brisket at THE BULLDOG CAFE
I have fond memories of the fish and chip shop that once occupied the space where The Bulldog Cafe now lies. Way back in the day my Nana Iris, who lived in the retirement village across the way, would take my younger sister and I over there for a feed of fish and chips. When I say back in the day I’m talking when a serve of chips cost $1 and Free Willy was showing on the big screen. Get your mind out of the gutter I’m talking about the one with the killer whale. In all honesty that’s probably the last time I visited this cafe for a feed. That was until last week when my fiancée and I popped in to check out what was on offer. These days the food at the Bulldog Cafe is a little slicker than your run of the mill greasy fish and chips. We arrived for a post gym late brekkie but upon a recommendation from owner Ilja we opted for an early lunch instead. The Beef Brisket and Pulled Pork Bahn Mi’s grabbed our attention on the menu board and since we couldn’t decide which one each of us wanted we shared half each with
a side of Sweet Potato Wedges. I’m a sucker for Sweet Potato Wedges (like the rest of the world) but all too often I’ve ended up with horrible soggy, oily fries that taste just as bad as they look. The Sweet Potato Wedges at The Bulldog Cafe are quite the opposite – glorious in fact. They’re big, crunchy and plentiful, just the way wedges should be and served with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce for the icing on the cake. Our bahn mi’s weren’t really bahn mi’s in a traditional sense with lashings of chilli, coriander and pate but tasty in their own right. My fave was probably the Beef Brisket Bahn Mi with Swiss Cheese and Pickles but that’s probably because I’m a bit of a pickle buff. The Pulled Pork Bahn Mi with Slaw and Mayonnaise was also a worthy lunch dish.
but The Bulldog Cafe has kept their prices honest and that’s what keeps the punters coming back for more. You won’t find any fancy pants $28 breakfast boards here but the food is genuine, the prices are right and the parking is ample. Forget this driving around and around the same block or stalking pedestrians while they walk to their car only to realise you don’t have any parking money anyway. Ahh story of my life.
They may not offer $1 serves of chips over the counter anymore

A LUNCH ABOUT THE VIKINGS AND THE LEGENDARY ICELANDIC SAGAS
BY VISITING AUTHOR KÁRI GÍSLASON
Viking history comes alive with best-selling author Kári Gíslason at the lunch event on Friday 16 February 2018 at the Shangri-La Hotel on the waterfront, where the Cairns Tropical Writers Festival will be held later in 2018. Kári Gíslason was co-author of the book Saga Land with ABC’s popular Conversations broadcaster Richard Fidler. Kári is coming north in February as part of a weekend Tropical Writers retreat on the Tablelands. Bookings for the lunch and / or the Writers Retreat are now open online at Eventbrite. Regarded as classics of world literature, the Icelandic Sagas are among the greatest stories ever written.
But now, as an Associate Professor teaching Creative Writing and Literary Studies at QUT, Kári wanted to know if it was true what his father had told him at their last meeting, that they shared a bloodline to the greatest saga author, the so-called ‘Shakespeare of Iceland’?
In 2015, Kári and his friend Richard Fidler travelled to Iceland with a plan to make a radio series and write a book together. They criss-crossed the land to record the true stories of the Vikings in the period 1000 years ago up to the Middle Ages, all the legendary blood feuds and fearless warrior women made popular by The Vikings mini-series.
The sagas, recording the history of Iceland settlement, were originally written on calf skins hundreds of years ago, but over the centuries, these fell into disuse, sometimes even rolled up and used to block the wintry wind under doorways. More recently, those that remained undamaged were eventually collected and transcribed for posterity.
The Iceland mission also set out to solve a family mystery for Kári. His complicated family history and his revealing of a tightlyheld family secret about his Icelandic father was the subject of a beautiful and moving memoir, The Promise of Iceland. Kári says this book was the book he had to write before he could write anything else.
The result is 40 unique and realistic stories describing the settlement of Iceland, detailing the heroic Viking raids abroad and blood-feuds at home. The Sagas are the absolute crown jewels of Icelandic culture. They are credited with being the true inspiration behind Lord of the Rings and the mini-series Game of Thrones.
The runaway success of the book of Saga Land by Richard Fidler and Kári Gíslason, published in October this year, is available at all good bookshops.

BATTLE OF THE LAST SUN...
Hayley Gillespie… THE ARTS It’s the festive time of year again! I’m sure it comes around faster every time! So while we look at a Christmas card and see the snow settling on the ground, in Cairns we have a very special, balmy, tropical Christmas. There are some fab outdoor events coming up and some cool air conditioning to be enjoyed in the galleries.
CAIRNS ART GALLERY With the school holidays upon us there are plenty of kid’s workshops to be enjoyed throughout the holidays both before and after Christmas, including a special art trip to the brand new Cairns Aquarium. Exhibiting for the whole of December and January is ARTNOW FNQ. A biennial initiative of the Gallery that aims to explore and reflect the inspiring range of activities that drive contemporary art and creative practice in Far North Queensland. In broad terms, it brings together works by emerging and established Indigenous and non-Indigenous
artists in a dialogue about ideas relating to nature, place, environments, identity, politics and history. Drop the kids into a workshop and take a bit of time to look around. On December 1st, check out Eggplant & Poppy’s Christmas shopping event in Oceana Walk Arcade, then wander on through to the Cairns Regional Gallery for the opening of ARTNOW FNQ. Then carry onto the Esplanade Lagoon as the Christmas tree lights are switched on. You never know, you might have all your shopping done and helped local business in our community to keep on thriving! On December 12th, head down to the Esplanade for a fun filled evening. Starting with the fabulous local talent from The Young Company Theatre group, and followed by a screening of Polar Express, the
beautifully animated modern family classic, the evening will commence at 5pm. Information can be found on Council website. Bring a picnic, family and friends. It’s FREE!
MUNRO MARTIN PARKLANDS
’Twas the night before Christmas. This Christmas Panto will be showcasing a range of local talent from our very own arts community. From actors, singers, designers and artists creating sets and costumes, this is a wonderful family event on the December 16th starting at 7pm. From the same company that brought us last year’s ‘A Cairns Christmas Carol’, Box Jelly Theatre Co, and choral work by Cairns Young Voices, join us for an enchanting festive treat for anyone who believes in the joy of Christmas. So get your family, friends and a picnic together and experience a tropical Christmas under the starry night sky.

Who’s Kickin’… AT KicKarts! MEET KICKARTS ART AND DEMENTIA TOUR FACILITATOR ANNA CROOKS!
Anna Crooks is a Creative Arts Therapist based in Cairns. With a Masters in Creative Arts Therapy from RMIT University, Anna has delivered meaningful arts engagement opportunities to at risk communities for over 15 years. Having completed training with Adriane Boag from the National Gallery of Australia, Anna now facilitates specialised gallery tours for people living with Dementia at KickArts. This non-medical therapy model sees participants gain meaningful health, wellbeing and social outcomes. Anna’s delivery of the KickArts program provides a unique opportunity for her as a facilitator in actively providing participants with a place to develop a voice and explain what is happening to them, in addition to reminiscing on the past. For Anna, nothing beats the genuine sense of enjoyment expressed by participants undertaking their monthly art chats.
KICKARTS ART AND DEMENTIA GALLERY TOURS KickArts Contemporary Arts has opened its galleries to assist people living with Dementia. Residents from Mercy Place Westcourt, Bupa Aged Care Cairns, and Centacare Marlin Coast Respite have joined individuals receiving at home care in engaging in monthly discussion based tours at the gallery. Based upon the successful National Gallery of Australia’s Art and Dementia program, the tours provide a non-invasive therapy
to reduce the agitation, anxiety and sense of loss and isolation experienced through Dementia. Since it’s inception in October 2017 the program has seen positive outcomes for participants who have expressed a sense of achievement and purpose in voicing their opinions, recalling memories and engaging with others during the tours. B eauty And THE BEAST
WRITTEN BY CHRIS BALDWIN & ADAPTED BY CATH WILLACY DIRECTED BY CATH WILLACY
This spectacular pantomime production is selling out quickly, so don’t delay in organising your family tickets. This year’s production of Beauty and the Beast - a Pantomime, has strong similarities to the original story written long ago in 1740, but with obvious ‘panto’ double entendres and corny ‘dad’ jokes. Our heroine isAnabelle, andher father (Lord Clapper) was rich but lost all his money, forcing the family to live in poverty. There’s an arrogant Prince who was once rude to the wicked witch Taipana, so she did what every wicked witch would do…she turned him into a Beast. The good fairy, Fairy Likwid, manages to get the spell to end if (and only if) a beautiful girl falls in love with the Beast. Prepare to be entertained with lots of singing, dancing, funny jokes and general ‘horsing around’. The fabulous Dame Dangle is Lord Clapper’s housekeeper, Ding Dong is the bellboy and Mirabelle and Isabelle are Ana’s pushy sisters who are less than kind to her. Jacques (the baddie) and Tatti are the King’s guards and while one does as he’s told, the other loves himself and has his own plans for marrying Ana. Watch out for a couple of surprise characters and prepare to cheer the goodies and boo the baddies. Go on, you know you want to join in! Tickets will sell out early so don’t wait around.

At Home With.. CASSANDRA BAIN NINE NEWS FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND
regional communities. I covered bushfires, floods, the controversial greyhound racing ban and a federal election to name a few.
“I grew up in Sydney’s upper north shore, before moving with my family to the Hawkesbury region where I was lucky enough to live on a 25-acre property with horses, cats, dogs and chickens. After finishing my HSC, I worked a few customer service jobs to save up enough money to travel. Through friends, I was also introduced to a handsome musician named Tyrone, who went to the same high school as me but was a couple of years older. My travelling dream was realised at 21 when Tyrone and I moved to London with his rock band. Living in the UK and travelling around Europe over the next two years was an incredible experience – but also very tough, as I was never able to acclimatise to the chilly weather! It was during my overseas stint I decided to pursue journalism, and enrolled in the London School of Journalism’s travel writing course. At the same time I was working as a game show presenter on Sky TV; spinning the roulette wheel, dealing cards and announcing winners to a live audience. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, so before long our two-year visas were up and we returned to Sydney. In 2013, I began a diploma of journalism at Macleay College, graduating the following year with a mountain of internship experience and plenty of determination to forge a successful career in the media industry. Within six months I landed my first full-time job as a cadet journalist for News Local, writing for community newspapers and filing digital stories for The Daily Telegraph. After two years with the company, I left the city for a dream opportunity as a reporter at Prime7 News in Tamworth, country NSW. I quickly learned nothing could compete with being out on the road, working alongside a cameraman to produce and tell incredible stories across
Then in May, Tyrone and I got married in Fiji! We always knew we didn’t want a big, expensive wedding so instead we had a nice engagement party with all our family and friends, and told them we’d be eloping overseas.
FAST FORWARD TO NOW, AND I CAN CONFIRM MOVING TO CAIRNS HAS BEEN EVERYTHING I HOPED FOR AND MORE
We stayed at Musket Cove Resort and celebrated the most magical week of our lives together, enjoying a private ceremony on the beach. Even though I loved my role at Prime7, when I heard Nine News was launching new regional newsrooms in Queensland, I decided to apply. Mike Dalton, Network Director of Regional News, called me and offered me a job – even giving me a choice of which bureau to join! Despite never having been to Cairns, I knew enough about Far North QLD to imagine myself sipping coconuts, snorkeling the reef and lapping up the warm weather… much like in Fiji! Fast forward to now, and I can confirm moving to Cairns has been everything I hoped for and more. Nine Local News is kicking goals, and every day we are working hard to bring stories to air that matter to Far North Queenslanders. From crocodiles to crime, farming to football, there’s always something important to report on. It’s hard to know how long I’ll stay in Cairns, but if I’m waiting to tick off my list of adventures then it could be a very long time! It’s what I love most about the region; the fact there’s so much natural beauty and so many attractions to explore in every direction. I’m planning to take my husband to swim at Cardwell’s stunning spa pools next.” Tagline: Catch Cassandra Bain and the Nine News Far North Queensland team from 6pm each weeknight for all your local, national and international news. EVERYTHING ABOUT PIRANHA MOWING FNQ SPEAKS OF ‘ABILITY AND COMPETENCE’.
Making A Difference
PIRANHA MOWING Too many local young people leave school, without any real employment prospects. For those who are able and want work, the barriers and challenges are overwhelming. With the idea to supporting local families living with a disability and/or mental ill-health, Piranha Mowing FNQ was born. employs crews of fit, active school leavers, who may be disadvantaged in an open job market by their learning disability, and provides them with onthe-job training whilst paying them award wages. Real life, real work, real wages. It is estimated there are about 500 young people with disability living in Cairns who want to work. Capitalising on the social appeal of the business and promoting a strong, positive image of disability, the business name and logo support the ‘can-do’ impression customers get when they see a crew
of healthy, able-bodied young people working under the instruction of their leading-hand, to quickly mow their lawn to a high standard. Everything about Piranha Mowing FNQ speaks of ‘ability and competence’. Their vision is to provide a work environment in which young people can learn skills that will improve their ability to achieve employment, while they are working and earning the same as anyone else doing the same job. Sonya Barber… GOES SILVER BLUEY’S FORESIGHT JOHN FORSYTH In 2017, fitness industry stalwart, Sonya Barber, celebrated 25 years on the job. Over those years, Sonya has witnessed some dramatic changes in the industry as it develops. “Fitness is all I ever wanted to do. Although my parents had concerns originally about it not being a ‘real job’,” Sonya giggles. As an Air Force family, Sonya’s family relocated often. To integrating into each new community, her family would join sporting clubs in the respective towns. This exposure to a wide variety of different sports fuelled Sonya’s desire to be part of it. “I saw first hand the benefits that sport brings to communities.” At 18, Sonya began studying fitness at Gold Coast TAFE, emerging twelve months as a qualified fitness leader.
FITNESS IS ALL I EVER WANTED TO DO. ALTHOUGH MY PARENTS HAD CONCERNS ORIGINALLY ABOUT IT NOT BEING A ‘REAL JOB’
By 19, she was a group Aerobics Coordinator. By 20, she was managing the gym. She was a natural. “I was in charge of twenty staff, including child carers, group exercise leaders, personal trainers and I had to do sales and marketing and memberships. I loved every part of it!” “Back then, it was so basic. The guys did gym and weights; the girls did aerobics,” Sonya explains. “All of a sudden there were different ways to become fit and healthy.” “The girls hit the gym and started lifting weights, the guys joined in group exercise. We stopped calling it ‘aerobics’ and instead called it ‘Pump’ and ‘Group Exercise’,” Sonya recalls. In 1997, Sonya along with a group of local women competed in Hawaii at the Hekili Outrigger World Championships. That same year, aged 23, Sonya started her own business, Better Bodies. “Better Bodies was about trying to be a little bit better than you are now.”
Personal trainers were in high demand in the gym scene, and not just for the affluent.
Australia, the industry association.
“I brought PT to the mainstream in Cairns. You could pay $30 and have personalised training, and before long, I had so many clients.”
“It was the absolute highlight of my career, travelling all around Queensland helping fitness instructors, trainers and gym owners to be better in their fitness business.”
“I would be up at 4:30am and coming home at 9pm. I was training people in their garages, whole families in their pool, dragging people up the red arrow and along the Esplanade,” she fondly remembers.
However, with a young family at home, the travel requirements of the role became too restrictive, and today Sonya is back teaching as part of the Sports Science School at CQUniversity.
Answering a call from Ergon Energy in 2009, just after the birth of her second child, Sonya took a new direction in the world of Health Psychology, by designing a Men’s Health program delivered to their 4500 strong workforce.
Looking forward, Sonya sees an even brighter future for her beloved fitness industry, and for us all over the next twenty five years.
The next stage took Sonya back to the classroom, but this time not as the student. After more than a decade in an educational role at TAFE, Sonya was appointed as the Queensland State Manager for Fitness
With her trademark smile and energetic voice, she repeats that now is the time to get moving. “We’re spoilt for choice; we have something for everybody. All ages, all abilities, all cultures and we are doing it smarter”. Here’s to 25 wonderful years, Sonya! Be well, Bluey. Issue 21 |

AMANDA
Spilling THE BEANS
on Christmas
BELINDA
Ho! Ho! Ho! With Christmas fast approaching, and coupled with the onslaught of the summer heat and humidity, this season can very quickly turn silly. This issue, we catch up with three locals to chat about their plans for the holidays, and what Santa may have in his sack! Amanda O’Shea | Business Development | Tcmstrata Belinda Down | Client Development Manager | WGCLaw Joanne Drake | Manager | Super Yacht Group Great Barrier Reef 1. What are your plans for Christmas and who are you favourite people to spend the holidays with? AMANDA: My husband has renamed the day as “The Big Lunch”. Each year, we either stay in Cairns or head down south to family to celebrate the festive season. This year we are home in the tropics, so I predict we will be spending the day lazing poolside with our orphaned family members. We open our home to all our friends, neighbours, extended family and anyone that needs to be rescued from their own family’s festivities. There will be plenty of bubbles in hand, music playing and loads of food to graze on throughout the day. Just thinking about it makes me smile! BELINDA: I am heading South to spend time with my family and friends. We are going to Norfolk Island – beautiful place to relax.
JOANNE
JOANNE: This year we are so happy to be staying close to home and taking in a luxury escape with my WA family at Lake Tinaroo. Chances are the days will be filled with some serious Masterchef battles, wakeboarding wars (#prayingforrain), water fights, lychee martinis, Mt Uncle visits, a few games of charades and no doubt a good dose of overindulgence. Im looking forward to sharing the countryside magic of the tablelands with my loved ones!
2.What are your local tips for the best Christmas presents on offer around town? AMANDA: I like to shop local and try and find fun, unique and interesting gifts for my friends and family. I can’t go past the ladies from Makin’ Whoopee Gift Shop on Shields Street. And my other favourite go to is The Green House Shop on Spence Street. I always find everyone on my Christmas list a gift that they LOVE…. And I know that I am supporting my local community. Winning! BELINDA: My biggest tip is “BUY LOCAL”. We have so many fantastic local gifts and gift shops. I often send local food products as gifts, including local hampers from Simply Hampers, and there’s so many gorgeous gifts in Eggplant and Poppy in Oceana Walk. Cherry Gift makes it easy to send vouchers. There’s Kickarts Gallery Shop for some brilliant local art, and of course FAmazing for great fashion. JOANNE: The hottest gift on the market right now, taking Australia by storm is the newly launched skincare in the States and Canada, Rodan + Fields. I love it! Everyone on my gift list will be getting something from the range.
3. We’ve just had a state election. What do you think Cairns should be asking for as a Christmas gift from the State government? AMANDA: I would love to see an increase in available jobs in our region, especially for younger people, so we can battle our high youth unemployment statistics. Having our region’s business community have confidence in opening their doors to take on board a trainee or an apprentice to grow our local talent right here. Especially when we have a number of large projects coming to life in the CBD, it would be amazing to upskill and train a local workforce right here on the ground. BELINDA: Primarily, I think we need cohesive vision amongst our economic leaders. Also, we need to find a way to reduce the cost of electricity, and address the local crime statistics. I think a zero tolerance attitude towards crime should be mandatory. JOANNE: Allowing foreign Superyachts to charter in Australia would be the best present the industry and particularly North Queensland would ever hope for. The increased visitation and importantly much longer length of stay for each vessel would be a huge benefit for all the suppliers and tradesmen, most being small family businesses. Our region excels at supporting, supplying and maintaining Superyachts and these vessels would flock to Cairns if charter rules similar to neighbouring countries such as NZ, Fiji and Tahiti are put in place.

Ample RESERVES
In Queensland, more than 4,600 people volunteer their time each month as a Defence Force Reservist. Reservists are highly motivated, skilled individuals who are trained in a number of different professions. Their experience in the Navy, Army or Air Force makes them incredible team players, able to show leadership and communicate within an organisation. They are reliable and loyal, and many have nationally recognised qualifications which can often be used by an employer.
Many residents in the Cairns community don’t realise that we have an Army and a Navy Reserve base here, conducting operations throughout Far North Queensland. These reservists have ‘day jobs’ in the Cairns region, and are supported by understanding employers who value their skillset and motivation. Their employers range from medium to large agencies and organisations through to small businesses and notfor-profit groups. Lieutenant Colonel Tim Rutherford, Commanding Officer of the 51st Battalion based in Cairns, explains “Here in Cairns, we have part time Army officers and part time soldiers. There are around 500 personnel working in the units across North Queensland and that number is growing as they welcome more people into their ranks. It is an honour to recognise our outstanding employers and reservists.” Defence Force Reservists have an incredible impact on our country and community, providing humanitarian relief to international communities that need it most, as well as helping to secure Australia’s borders. In times of difficulty, such as natural disasters, they assist in the rebuilding

of communities, as well as emergency rescue operations. The Australian Defence Force (ADF) operational capability and deployment is reliant on the availability of Defence Reserves and the ongoing support of their employers. Employers from across the Cairns region were acknowledged for their support for Australian Defence Force (ADF) Reservists at an awards function in November. The Employer Support Awards, hosted by the Defence Reserves Support Council (DRSC), recognised employers who have been particularly supportive of their Reservist employees. DRSC Cairns Region Chair, Miss Lara Wilde, said the awards recognised ongoing and exceptional efforts on behalf of employers to support their employees who serve in the Australian Defence Force.
EMPLOYER SUPPORT AWARDS Winners SMALL BUSINESS CATEGORY D & G Zahmel Farming, Innisfail David & Colleen Zahmel employ their son WO2 Graham Zahmel to operate and run the family farming business in Innisfail. Graham has been an active reservist and key member of the Innisfail platoon for many years. In addition, Graham as a senior reserve soldier is employed as a Patrol Master and has over many years deployed on Operation Resolute in the Torres Strait and numerous training courses. David has been accommodating in providing Graham the flexibility to accommodate his protected Defence Service Leave. MEDIUM BUSINESS CATEGORY J Gilbert & Sons, Mareeba Paul & Jenny employ their son, Sgt John Gilbert, plus their other seven sons to help operate and run the family farming businesses in Mareeba and Tully. The farms grow various crops including sugar cane and bananas. Sgt Gilbert has been an active reservist and member of the Atherton platoon for many years. John is employed as a Patrol Commander and has, over many years, deployed on Operation Resolute and numerous training courses. Paul and Jenny have been quite accommodating in providing Sgt Gilbert the flexibility to accommodate his protected Defence Service Leave. J Gilbert
& Sons are grateful for the support from DRSC and welcome the Employer Support Payment which goes some way to compensating for the absences. LARGE BUSINESS CATEGORY Golder Associates, Cairns For some training courses, the Army requires soldiers to attend continuously over a period of weeks every year. This year Private Williamson completed a total of 12 weeks training to complete her initial recruit training and clerical trade. Golder Associates management recognises that these absences are not a cost, but rather an investment, in the individual and Private Williamson’s manager, Kirsten Stephens has commented on how well Olivia has developed in the short time since she joined the Reserves. Kirsten stated she had noticed a significant increase in Olivia’s decision making, leadership and work skills since she completed her recruit and clerk’s courses. PUBLIC SECTOR CATEGORY Queensland Police Service, Northern Region Many of the part time soldiers at the unit are also employed as state police officers. It makes sense that these individuals who are already so community minded to make the decision to serve in the Police Service, also serve in
the Armed Services. This year QPOL was nominated by officers and soldiers with special mention to the Cairns, Edmonton and Thursday Island stations. The Queensland Police Service is a great example of an employer who acknowledges, appreciates and utilises the additional skills that service personnel in the part-time Army can provide to an employer. The unit command team also thanks and commends the Queensland Police Service for their flexibility to enable full participation in the Army reserves by their members. NOT FOR PROFIT Wujal Wujal Community Over the past year the Wujal Wujal community as a whole has been extremely supportive of men and women from their community. In collaboration with Major Josh Mickle in particular, the community has enabled a number of men and women to successfully join the Reserves and complete their initial training. The support provided has come from all members of the community and has ranged from hosting unit visits, providing facilities and assisting community members in making their progress through the recruiting system. They have also supported their absences from the community and now look forward to these new soldiers helping more members to join.

At Work With..
KATE MACONACHIE When Kate Maconachie’s parents gave her a book of gnomes for Christmas as a teenager, she had no idea that book would change the course of her life, and eventually her career. Kate, or Fairy Kate as she is now known to so many, found herself engrossed in the illustrated pages, immersed in a land of little folk, forests and fairies. “When I was younger, I had made a list of all the countries I wanted to travel to. And ever since my mum gave me that book, the nordic countries had always rated highly on that list. There was something about the enchanting forests and the folklore that I felt a connection with,” Kate explains. “I did a lot of international travel - twelve years of it in fact. I lived in New Zealand, Vietnam, Finland, Sweden and Myanmar. I was mostly working as a teacher and was delighted being able to bring my creativity into the classrooms,” Kate recalls. “It was when I was in Oslo in 2010, that I had a moment of clarity. Through a series of coincidences, I met Uncle Bob!” Kate refers to the late Aboriginal elder, teacher and campaigner, Bob Randall. “He was travelling all around Europe teaching the Kanyini principles, which is a method of connectedness through caring and responsibility that underpins Aboriginal life. We spoke of embracing nature, and during that conversation, I felt a real pull to be with my family again.” 44
| www.oasismagazine.com.au
“I had been travelling for 12 years, and I now realise I was burnt out by the school system. I needed a change and the conversation with Uncle Bob gave me permission to go home.” As a fourth generation Cairns local, Kate described the feeling of coming home as wonderful. “We have deep roots in this town. Murray Street is actually named after my grandmother, Essie Murray.” Kate explains that she took some time to spend connecting with family, before taking on a role with Migrant Services through Centacare. "At that time, they were still processing asylum seekers through Scherger, and I was employed in a client support role. In many instances, I was actually the first person many refugees saw after they were granted freedom. You could really feel their vulnerability. I really did love it, however, it was quite stressful a stressful job.” “I found that I needed a creative and artistic outlet, and that’s where I became interested in fairy gardening.” “Initially it was an escape. Fairy gardening allowed me to draw on experiences I had in Finland and Sweden, where their culture and folklore is so very strong.” “I was casting my own fairy doors, and painting them, and then some friends and neighbours were interested, so I made some for them. From there, the word
“
SHE HAD NO IDEA THAT BOOK WOULD CHANGE THE COURSE OF HER LIFE, AND EVENTUALLY HER CAREER
” spread, and before long, I was selling them at a stall at the Tanks Markets.” In 2012, Kate’s position with Migrant Services was made redundant. It was at that time that Kate realised that she had built the Fairy Garden business to a substantial size. “I was full-time pottering around in mum’s garage,” Kate laughs. “I found a kind of magic in the business. I loved that, through teaching people about fairy gardening, I was able to provide a tool for parents to connect with their kids, and for kids to connect with nature, and to be more present with each other. It was a real way of tapping into that magic and introducing it back into childhood. There’s also been a lot of research around the benefits of fairy gardening for mental health issues, due to it being a really quiet activity.” “By November 2014, I realised that this business was getting pretty big. But my processes really needed some attention,” Kate confesses. Kate was introduced to Kim Kelly from The Business Booth. “I really liked her enthusiasm. I felt like an imposter when I started the course, but they were so lovely and so embracing. Kim mentored me, and helped me launch my website.” “It was an enormous process, even though, rather
foolishly, I did it just before the Christmas rush! Still, we just got the website up in time for Christmas, and I couldn’t believe the results. It was working while I slept!” “From there, I met Charisse Russell at Entrepreneurs Accountant. She has been an amazing help to the business. Not many accountants would help you hang shelves in your new shop, but she did! And, with her guidance and support, the business has continued growing." I’m so excited about the newly opened Garden Sparkle Gift Shop at 54 Shields Street, Cairns. We’ve got some great things planned, including workshops. “The fairy garden market has changed drastically, as has the nature of online shopping. This has really kept me on my toes. However, Garden Sparkle seems to be working because people recognise I have a special way of presenting the gardens, and that it’s my sparkle that distinguishes me from the others. I’m really proud to hear that feedback.” For me, fairy gardening really is a love affair, and I’m so happy to be able to share my magic with other people. Issue 21 |

Caring for your… ROTATOR CUFF PHYSIO SUZANNE RATH Wellness Embodied
Most people have heard of the rotator cuff muscles. If you’re with family, in work or in a café, stop, look around you and think about this; you know several people with a rotator cuff tear. If you’re over a certain age, chances are it might be you. But don’t despair- here’s five other things you may not have known about the rotator cuff. IT’S MADE UP OF 4 MUSCLES Often people talk about the rotator cuff as if it’s only one muscle. In fact, it’s a group of four- supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapularis. All these attach into the capsule of the shoulder joint to hold it nice and stable. The most commonly torn is the supraspinatus muscle, which sits on the top of your shoulder blade: this muscle is also often the one impinged in a ‘Shoulder Impingement.’ Physiotherapists are experts in the musculoskeletal systemwe can explain the link between muscle imbalances and joint pain, so if in doubt, book an appointment!
MANY TEARS ARE DUE TO DEGENERATION. In one study, a group of people with and without shoulder pain had MRI scanning done. 54% of those over 60 with no symptoms had partial rotator cuff tears. In those over 80, tear rates of up to 80% have been reported. Poor blood flow and delayed healing can often be issues in this population, which generally makes management without surgery a better option. PHYSIOTHERAPY IS JUST AS EFFECTIVE AS SURGERY. Looking at tears due to degeneration, studies have shown physiotherapy is just as effective as surgery when it comes to managing and improving shoulder pain due to a rotator cuff tear. Physiotherapy can also assist with assessment and treatment of other factors which may be causing shoulder pain- this includes the neck, thoracic spine and shoulder blade. Physiotherapy management at Wellness Embodied is tailored to the client and what we find on assessment. Treatment can include specific strengthening and stretching exercises, manual therapy for stiff joints, soft tissue and fascia release, as well as other modalities like medical acupuncture and taping. In the case of a small or degenerative tear, surgery should definitely be a last resort. In those younger clients with a tear due to traumatic injury, the decision as to whether surgery is best will depend on factors like occupation, sports participation and other goals. All clients will benefit from a guided strengthening and manual therapy program before, as well as after, their surgery to optimise
Suzanne Rath BSc. (Hons) Physio., MSc. Sport & Exercise Med.
results and ensure a quick return to normal movement. It is worth knowing though, that a quicker surgery in the case of a huge tear is better. YOU’RE A PERSON; NOT AN IMAGING FINDING. Far too often now people are overly concerned about the results of a MRI, CT or ultrasound that shows a tiny tear, some bone degeneration or otherwise. Firstly, it’s important to remember that there can be a poor link between imaging findings and the level of pain; there are lots of people with no pain who have terrible looking MRIs and vice versa. Secondly, just because something is torn doesn’t mean it needs to be fixed for you to function. Seek the opinion of a trusted surgeon, your GP and a physiotherapist and remember to do your exercises! PEOPLE WHO DO REPETITIVE LIFTING OR OVERHEAD ACTIVITIES ARE MOST AT RISK OF A TEAR. Overhead activities of the shoulder require a complex pattern of muscle activation to maintain stability- including good posture and strength in the muscles surrounding the shoulder blade. Without this good form, repetitive movements can chronically strain the rotator cuff, leading to a degenerative tear. In fact, at the annual Orthosports conference in Sydney a couple of years ago, a leading shoulder surgeon said he believes people over 50 shouldn’t do weight lifting or other activities above the level of the shoulderfood for thought! Food SAFETY NUTRITION DOROTHY RICHMOND Dietitian
Christmas is the time of year for feasting and relaxation. Over the coming weeks we will indulge in many culinary delights. In order that our holiday does not become a gastronomic disaster, awareness of safe eating practices, at home and whilst eating out, becomes important.
adequately cooked.
AL FRESCO So, while relaxing by the pool with friends, remember that our tropical environment is an ideal breeding ground for food poisoning bacteria. If you are serving platters of food al fresco, remember to keep them covered for fly control. Display small platefuls at a time so that food is not sitting in the temperature danger zone for long and can be replenished from the fridge in your kitchen.
Keep egg-based sauces such a mayonnaise, and dishes that contain mayonnaise such as coleslaw, cool at all times. Keep rice, pasta or noodle dishes either very hot or very cold, never in between. And remember to never refreeze defrosted ice cream
If cooking a barbecue, remember to serve the meat straight away, particularly if your guests like it rare. Ensure that chicken and seafood is

DINNER PARTIES To ensure it is adequately cooked, cut the legs of the turkey and cook them on the side of the roasting tray. They can be attached later to carve. Cook the stuffing on the side of the roasting tray rather than inside the bird
CHRISTMAS STOCKING Most people stock up with food over Christmas. As tempting as it it, try not to overfill the fridge. To be a safe form of storage, fridges need to keep food below five degrees centigrade. If you must stock up, it is better to stock up with frozen food and defrost as necessary in the fridge or the microwave.

Vacuum packed food is good standby and undergoes rigorous quality testing before it leaves the factory. If you are going on long shopping trips, keep an esky in the boot of the car for frozen and other perishable foods. And remember to watch out for damaged packaging, in particular dented cans. BEST BUFFETS Restaurants are required to follow food safety measures, so don’t be worried if you see a chef probe the food on a buffet with a thermometer. This is part of measures being adopted by restaurants to assess hazards and ensure food safety. Signs of safe restaurant service of food includes mall quantities of food replenished regularly from the main kitchen, supervised buffet tables, enough fresh plates for each trip to the buffet, and cold food that is very cold and hot food that is piping hot.

With the hectic Christmas period approaching, ensure you enjoy the Christmas festivities at your very best throughout by incorporating massage into your plans. REMEDIAL MASSAGE Massage relieves symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, tight muscles, stress and anxiety to name a few. Whilst massage was previously regarded as a luxury, private health funds have now recognised the benefits of remedial massage therapy as a treatment to achieve health and wellbeing. Many people tend to persevere with uncomfortable symptoms, hoping they will disappear. This results in tiredness, aches and pains, insomnia, tension, stress, worry and poor concentration. It’s not until people book a massage that they realise how much tension they have been carrying

They say that time flies when you are having fun, but can you believe that 2017 is almost over and the silly season is here already?
fit and healthy, but those sneaky post exercise endorphins can help improve your mood and reduce your stress levels (what more could you want?)!
Although Christmas is meant to be the most wonderful time of the year, it can also be a time of stress, anxiety and disappointment… which may have something to do with over indulgence, too much family time and no rescue puppy under the tree on Christmas morning!
Experts recommend 30 minutes of physical activity at least three times a week. When you think about it, that is only 90 minutes out of the 10,080 minutes you have each week to get stuff done.
If you find the Christmas season to be extra stressful, know that you are not alone. Eight out of ten people experience increased stress over the Christmas period… and any wonder with all the family commitments, social events and shopping to get done. Although exercise might be the last thing on your mind over the coming weeks, it is important to remember that being physically active can not only keep you
Finding time to exercise is not going to be your first priority with the silly season in full swing, but it doesn’t need to be a chore. Find something that works for you, your family and your lifestyle; whether that is taking the dog for a walk, going for a family bike ride, hitting the gym with your mates or stretching your stresses out in a BODYBALANCE™ class… whatever you decide, it is important to remember that your physical health and mental health are equally important. As we open our diaries to realise that Christmas is less than 4 weeks away we also come face to face with humidity. During the winter months in our tropical paradise we tend to forget just how intense the humidity is. We change our outfits to sheerer fabrics, we change our footwear from closed in to open toe, we change our bed linen, we even change from red wine to a crisp chilled white, but we usually forget to change our makeup routine… We then wonder why the lovely dewy foundation we wear all year round doesn’t even last past the 9am meeting. Here’s some sneaky cheats to help you through the festive season, so you can still look fabulous even at non air-conditioned events.

It keeps our pores clean and during summer these treatments aren’t as drying. Always finish with a night cream to lock in some moisture, and remember if you are doing extra exfoliations, be extra sun-safe. Having a cleaner base to begin with will make a big difference to how your makeup stays intact.

We naturally swing between two shades year round, winter is slightly lighter and summer we tend to have more glow. Summer season calls for a Matte finish foundation. A dewy finish is just too heavy in the heat. Remember to always set your foundation with a powder to hold it in place.

pH, or potential of Hydrogen, is a measurement to scale alkalinity and acidity. In very simple terms, a measurement of 7 is neutral. Below that indicates acidity, while above it is alkaline. To get an idea about your body, if you’re too acidic, you have to do a specific measurement. Only your pH profile will show if you’re acidic or not. And it is important to measure your pH regularly, as one measurement alone doesn’t tell you anything about the pH circumstances in your body, neither measuring your blood pH. The human tolerated range of pH of blood and cell fluid is limited. It gets adjusted by a complex buffer system. Normal is a pH of 7.35-7.45 in arterial blood. For the LOVE OF ART cheery run through their mind every time they look at it. Because there is a fair chance every visitor, friend or potential buyer could also have those thoughts. This in return does not really bring any element one would have hoped.
INTERIOR DESIGN
Spend the extra money on a good quality print or canvas that is guaranteed to give you the right effect you are looking for. A beautifully decorated room comes alive with a balance of shapes, fabrics, textures, light and most important art. Art has the power to raise emotions. It can inspire, or even provoke ones thoughts.
SELENA MURPHY Azure Collections
One of my favourite contributions to interior decorating is art. It can present itself in many different mediums. In decorating, it appears mostly in sculptures and artwork. It absolutely amazes and intrigues me as to what idea or thought brought this art to reality. Was it hardship, joy, sadness? How is this artist expressing one self? Many times a certain piece of art will determine how the room will function as it dictates placement of furniture, and can be the starting point for the design concept. We are so fortunate here in tropical North Queensland as we have access to so many wonderful artists. With pricing to suit all, you are sure to find something that will meet your budget, so it does really surprise me when I hear people comment “I just want something cheap and cheery for my walls”.
WHILE FABRICS, TEXTURES, FURNITURE AND WINDOW TREATMENTS CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS A BEAUTIFUL SPACE, IT’S THE ARTWORK THAT HOLDS THE KEY TO EMOTIONS.
How many of us have flicked through a glossy home magazine, and in the corner of the page noticed something that has drawn our attention, and we find ourselves going back to it. There’s a fair chance that somewhere in the picture is a piece of artwork that has created a particular thought. While fabrics, textures, furniture and window treatments contribute towards a beautiful space, it’s the artwork that holds the key to emotions. And please if you are travelling overseas and you are thinking of getting something copied, remember it is and always will be just a copy. It is what it is, and it will never have the same effect or feeling that a true piece of original artwork would possess. My advice is, if you are entering this path, is to put some thought into it. Source an artist from that area that does similar work instead of settling for just a copy.
When one makes a comment like that, you have to wonder does cheap and

Selling in the FESTIVE SEASON REAL ESTATE Wade & Michelle Champion
Selling your home over the Christmas period in the past has been seen as something not to do. However, the way real estate is conducted, and the way consumers buy homes, has shifted dramatically in recent years. There are a lot of significant reasons today to have your home listed for sale during the holiday season. Here are some of those reasons. With the dramatic increase of home buyers relocating to Cairns from southern states over the last few years, the holidays are a convenient time for these buyers to travel to look at homes. Though it’s a busy time of year, most people have more time up their sleeve to look at properties they’ve had an eye on. As workloads and commitments slow down, motivated buyers have much more time to search through properties that appeal and get out to see them.
There are fewer homes for buyers to look at during the holidays which means less competition for you… less competition equals more money. After the holidays, the supply of listings increase substantially which lowers the demand for your home…more competition equals less money. Take advantage of the Christmas cheer that many potential buyers will be feeling. Without work, your target market will be feeling much more relaxed, as well as open to new possibilities, making the overall process easier for everyone.
The rental market gets noisy this time of the year. Leases are up, and people are working out their next step – a new place to rent, or for many, time to finally buy. Catch them while they’re in transit. If you are travelling over the Christmas period don’t stress. Your Real Estate Agent can handle everything while you are away. Not only will your home be vacant and clean, it will also get a nice check-in a few times while you’re gone.

Sleepless NIGHTS MARKETING JONATHON PACKHAM
Platinum Graphics I hear it all the time. “You own your own business, you can do as you want, sleep in when you want.”“You don’t have a boss to answer to, that must be awesome!” Well, it is awesome, but not necessarily for those reasons. When you own a business, there are definitely some perks. For each business owner, the perks can be quite different, however most of the time, owning a business is hard work, late nights and when you are getting started there are plenty of sleepless nights. Those sleepless nights come from a variety of things. For me, it was excitement, adrenalin and a flurry of ideas. Not all businesses come from an amazing idea. Sometimes an opportunity is presented or a gap in the market presents itself, a need or requirement that lays there just begging for someone to recognise and
take advantage. Once you have made the decision to start your business, then comes the realisation, how do I turn my idea into a successful business? One of the key elements to a successful business is branding. In the past, branding was defined as a name, slogan, sign, symbol or design, or a combination of those things that identify products or services of a business. The brand was identified to differentiate the goods and or service from the competition. Today branding is not only about getting your target market to select you over the competition. It is about getting your customers to see you as the only provider of a solution to their problem or need. Your brand needs to clearly deliver your message, it gives your business credibility and emotionally connects your customers with your product and or service as well as motivates the customer to buy and to
create customer loyalty. When you think about your brand, you really want to think about your entire customers experience. Everything from your logo, your website, your social media experiences even the way you answer the phone and the way your customers experience your staff. Your brand is the way your customer perceives you. When starting your business, you can get help from a business which specialises in building brands for our customers. Platinum Graphics has over 14 years’ experience building brands for our customers. We want to make it as easy for our customers as possible. That is why we have created our Small Business Start Up Packages, everything you need, all together for a fixed price. With Platinum Graphics, there is one less reason to have sleepless nights.

Why am I DOING THIS? ACCOUNTANT CHARISSE RUSSELL Director
It’s a common thought early in the morning after another late night working to keep your business going, trying to find a few more hours in the day. That’s why in business, it’s important to start at the END. One of our main goals with new clients at Entrepreneurs Accountant is to set an End Goal for their business, because the best way of maintaining your drive and focus on those Groundhog style days is by having a clear end goal to achieve. It makes all of those important little decisions you make all of the time a lot easier as it gives them a purpose to achieve before they can fit into the overall framework. Your End Goal will depend entirely on what you want to get out of your business and how long you want to be doing the same thing, but the main thing is to ensure that when it comes time to walk away from your business you have something that you can sell or
continue to make income from without having to put in a full-time effort. For the sole traders out there this means ensuring that when it comes time to sell you have a sale price in mind and can work towards building your equipment/stock/client list/ procedures to a point where people will be willing to pay your price instead of having the bare essentials that they could put together themselves. For the larger business and Professional practices, you can choose between a sale price or putting management and procedures in place that would allow you to still draw from the business without being involved in the day to day operations. A third option you might not have considered is Franchising. It’s not for everyone but can be a good way to earn money from the work you’ve put into building your brand and operation.
Planning for the fact that at some point you will have to walk away from your business is one of the most important parts of running it. You may not have a say in when it happens and all too often business owners without an exit or succession strategy are forced to simply walk away from their creation with nothing but memories and lingering debts. Having an End Plan gives you the answer to ‘Why am I doing this?’ on those long days and early mornings. When you find yourself adrift in the business world you need to have a destination in mind before you can chart your course. Who gets the kids AT CHRISTMAS? LEGAL CATHERINE ROSS Special Counsel
It’s that time of year again! As we hurtle towards Christmas and the festive holiday season, we’re all busily planning our Christmas dinners, presents we need to buy and where and with whom we are going to spend our time. Unfortunately, for many separated parents the idea of Christmas and the holiday period can be quite a stressful time and trying to make arrangements for time with children can often result in increased conflict between many parents. We often see parents at this time of year who are struggling to work out arrangements for the care of their children, particularly what time they will be spending with each parent and their extended family over the Christmas period. It is best to try to reach agreement in relation to Christmas and holiday
arrangements and to shield the children from any conflict. Here are a few tips to help make Christmas go smoother:
Start your own family Christmas traditions. For example, rather than a heavy sit down meal, why not go a for picnic on the beach with the children instead.

JCU BREAKFAST Recently, James Cook University, in collaboration with the Business Liaison Association, hosted a breakfast presenting the opportunity to learn more about Sports, Health and Exercise Science Careers of the Future. Approximately 130 students from around the region, reaching as far as
Cooktown, travelled to Cairns to listen to guest speakers Kelly Sinclair, JCU Lecturer, Louise Cooper, Managing Director, Health Moves and Laura Fewtrell, third year Sport and Exercise Science Student. The possibilities presented were real world relevant and with the health and fitness industry forging ahead jobs are sure to COMMITTEE present themselves. FOR WASTE
ANNUAL BREAKFAST WITH THE LAW
REDUCTION
Just one week later the Business Liaison Association in conjunction with Vandeleur and Todd Solicitors were holding the annual Breakfast with the Law. Legal Studies Students from Cairns, Tablelands and Cassowary Coast attended to hear Guest Speaker Ms Charlotte Campbell, President, Qld Young Lawyers and Professor Anthony Gray, Business Educators’ Association Queensland Lecturer on the topic “Social Media and the Law”. The guest speakers truly inspired and challenged students and encouraged them to pursue a career in the legal industry.
“ANNUALLY THE ASSOCIATION PROVIDES $60,000 TOWARDS AWARDS, COMPETITIONS AND BURSARIES AND WE ARE VERY PROUD OF THAT.” Angela Toppin, Chairperson of the Business Liaison Association
IT’S TIME TO BE REWARDED THE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY TEACHERS ASSOCIATION AWARDS And in the following week another annual highlight occurred, the Design and Technology Teachers Association Awards, short DATTA Awards. Students from Secondary Schools throughout Far North Queensland have entered this exciting competition, which gives them the opportunity to demonstrate not only their technical knowledge, but also their very creative skills. The judges were most impressed with the standard of work. Almost 100 students were recognised at the Presentation of Awards. It has been pleasing to see the steady increase of female students entering the competition in a traditionally male dominated area.
Little rest for the Business Liaison Association, as they are now getting ready for the Annual Awards Presentation Function, on the 29th of November, to recognise the achievements of secondary school students for 22 Award Categories. All Awards are sponsored and presented by local industry groups. Angela Toppin, Chairperson of the Business Liaison Association, commends students and business sponsors for supporting the youth of Far North Qld. “Annually the Association provides $60, 000 towards Awards, Competitions and Bursaries and we are very proud of that.”
We couldn’t do what we do without the g enerous support of our sponsors. PARTNER

INSTITUTE OF MANAGERS AND LEADERS Book Launch NOVEMBER 2017, NOVOTEL OASIS CAIRNS
than theory – the “perspiration” rather than “inspiration”. Co-authored by its Chief Executive David Pich, and Chair of the Board, Ann Messenger, Leadership Matters is unapologetically practical, revolving around seven essential leadership skills identified by the Institute’s Policy and Research team and the subject of the IML Conference 2016. Each of the seven guest-authored chapters of Leadership Matters’ focuses on a different key leadership practice. The Cairns Regional Advisory Committee have already begun planning an action packed 2018. With a series of focussed professional development events, the committee will support Cairns based leaders and managers to take their skillset and career to the next level. Support for particular initiatives such as the Chartered Manager professional accreditation and the Mentoring program will strengthen local businesses, organisations and individuals alike.
In November, Cairns members and non-members alike were invited to an end of year celebration at the Novotel Oasis where, not only did they rejoice in the accomplishments of 2017, OASIS MAGAZINE but also launched the first book from the HAS TWO COPIES OF Institute of Managers and Leaders titled LEADERSHIP MATTERS Leadership Matters: 7 skills of very AND TWO TICKETS TO successful leaders. KATE RICHARDS Adventure Mumma Blogger
Holiday
AT HOME We live in paradise, the adventure capital of Australia, where the Reef meets the Rainforest! And with the summer holidays rolling out across Australia, you can almost feel the collective sigh from parents everywhere who have school-age kids – for some it will be relief, others trepidation… School holidays can be a challenge. As parents, we still have our usual jobs to do, and we also have to juggle the kids not being at school. It can be so tempting to simply hand the kids an electric screen. We’ve enlisted Adventure Mumma, Kate Richards, to help you plan your Holiday At Home.
HARTLEYS CROCODILE ADVENTURES
1
I love Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures ZOOTASTIC 5.
It includes five great animal encounters which allows kids aged 10 years and over to get upclose and personal with the wildlife. There’s also plenty of time for taking photos on your own camera and learning about the wildlife, including cassowaries, koalas, lizards, pythons, wombats, wallabies and birds. The Zootastic experience is interactive, informative and fun. All the things that will have kids learning, without even knowing about it! And, the kids will be in the safe hands of the highly experienced Hartley’s Wildlife Team.

Zootastic 5 operates daily at 9.30am & 1:30pm and runs for about one hour. Just remember to pre-book by 4pm the day before. And as an added bonus, there’s a maximum of six people allowed at any one time, so you’re assure of getting some great exposure to the wildlife. I highly recommend this as a special treat over the school holidays.

CAIRNS ZOOm
The Cairns Wildlife Dome has always been a favourite sanctuary for our family during the Far Northern Wet Season. Its massive glass dome provides the perfect umbrella during those wet tropical downpours. It’s a great place to wander around in a natural rainforest setting and enjoy all sorts of native Australian animals that (mostly) free-roam around the enclosure. Thankfully Goliath, the 4-5 metre Saltie stays put in his own habitat, though!

BEAT THE HEAT
Summer is the time when locals turn their back on the beaches around Cairns and head inland to dip and frolic in the natural watershed that cascades off the foothills of Cairns. These rivers provide the perfect escape from the heat and humidity of the wet season. Head to Crystal Cascades, Stony Creek Falls, Freshwater Creek, Goombora Park, Ross n Locke, Behana Gorge or any one of the other gorgeous freshwater swimming holes. And always remember to be sun smart!

We love it here – so much so that the kids have membership cards and we can pop along and let them ‘swing’ on the high ropes and dangle over Goliath, the 4 metre crocodile anytime we want. Every time we visit, we seem to always bump into Sam, who’s the ZOOm Team Leader and our kids Number One choice for when they do the Power Jump and the Dome Climb.
LASER FUN Another ideal indoors activity that I can’t recommend LaserFUN highly enough. Located on the Brown Street side of DFO, this huge area is an exciting arena based activity for players aged 6 and up and is a great way to keep the kids active, and dry these school holidays! Laserfun has strategic game-modes for advanced players, or simple zap-theplayers mayhem for beginners! All this can be found in a fully air-conditioned venue! It’s fun, active, safe and requires teamwork and communication - all those things to keep the kids learning, without them even realising it! LaserFun really is awesome fun for kids, adults and everyone inbetween! DFO Shopping Centre, 274 Mulgrave Road, Cairns W: www.laserfun.com.au E: bookings@laserfun.com.au P: 4031 9865
Meet TRAVIS BAIN Local filmmaker, Travis Bain will premiere his latest production, Landfall, in Cairns in December. The 99-minute film is a crime thriller about a post-heist home invasion at a beach house during a cyclone.
Landfall is about a young couple trapped in their beach house by three armed fugitives carrying a mysterious sealed Esky, and they must rely on their wits and cunning to survive as a savage cyclone looms.
“Landfall was 100% conceived and made here in the North,” Bain says. “So even though it’ll appeal to anyone in the world who likes a good thriller, it’ll have special resonance here because it’s set in familiar surroundings … and weather!”
Bain says his team went to great lengths to bring the film’s severe cyclone to life, using industrial fans, high-pressure hoses, and some large helpings of digital magic to create the illusion of a savage storm in postproduction.
FOLLOW OASIS MAGAZINE ON FACEBOOK FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN TICKETS TO THE PREMIERE.
“We have over 100 visual effects shots in Landfall, so it’s like a mini disaster movie as well as a crime thriller,” Bain says. “And Monster Fest Travelling SideShow Cairns is a fantastic event to launch it locally. They’re got a great line-up of genre films over three days that are normally hard to go and see outside the capital cities.” The low-budget film was shot last

year at Flying Fish Point and Coquette Point, and is Bain’s follow-up to his successful monster movie Throwback, which was a major success at Cairns Festival 2014. Starring veteran Australian actors Vernon Wells (Mad Max 2, Throwback) and Tony Bonner (Skippy, The Lighthorsemen), alongside local actors including Daryl Heath, Andy Bramble, Shawn Brack and Anthony Ring, Landfall is not to be missed.
Landfall will premiere at Event Cinemas Cairns Central on Friday 8th December at 7pm as the opening night film for Monster Fest Travelling SideShow Cairns, followed by a filmmakers’ Q&A session. Tickets are $21 or $17.50 for concessions. To watch the trailer and order tickets, visit www.sapphirepictures.com.au or www.facebook.com/landfallmovie
