There’s a lotta love in this month’s And isn’t that a Wedding Feature. good thing. Personally, I reckon John Lennon nailed it back in 1967 when he penned “Love is all you Need”. Well, aside from the other stuff you need, like food, water, shelter, espresso martinis etc. Unfortunately, however, everyday I see far too many instances of people acting in ways that aren’t very loveable. Humans not being the best humans they can be. I have a theory about making it through everyday. A measurement, is you wish. It’s my “Don’t Be A Dick” meter. Or DBAD, for short. Because despite the stream of Instagram posts showing us nailing it, I actually believe that life is an 80ish-yearlong amusement park ride, and we are all just clinging on. In this theme park, some people choose the carousel. Others choose the rollercoaster. Both are different, and both are totally okay. Everyday, you are going to come across people who are queueing up for a different ride to you. People who do work, life and family different to the way you do it. People who like things you don’t like; believe in things you don’t believe in; and do stuff that you wouldn’t do. And, most of the time, that’s okay. But when one person starts attacking another, just because of the way they choose to play in the amusement park, that’s a problem. That’s nasty. That’s bullying. And that’s not okay. You see, that person may be a superhero at work, but unable to identify one end of a vacuum from another at home. They may be a Rhodes Scholar, but unable to catch a ball. They may be a domestic goddess, but unable are to cope in the corporate jungle. This is where the DBAD meter comes into play. Before go all Judgemental Judy on someone because they are doing something differently to you, just. stop. Chances are, they’re just trying to get to the end of the ride. DBAD.
Accept they are doing things differently to you. And scroll on. This big rant does actually have a point. It’s a segue to an article on Page 22 about The Pineapple Village, a newly formed social initiative created by Kylie Bean, following on from a youth suicide that made our nation sit up and listen to this crisis. Because when we introduced social media to the party, it brought along it’s annoying housemate, cyber-bullying. Yes, there has always been bullying. A bit of argy-bargy. A bit of name calling. A good old-fashioned barney with the neighbours. Not my neighbours, obvs. #AskingForAFriend But these days, as our babies are navigating their way through a traditionally awkward period fraught with unpredictable hairgrowth and hormones, social media means there is no respite from the taunts. Anyone with an internet connection is at risk of relentless criticism in their home – a place that was traditionally deemed a sanctuary. This epidemic terrifies me. It shakes me to the core. The National Day of Action against Violence and Bullying is on March 16th. On that day, I would love you all to embrace my DBAD theorum. Have a walk around with it. Treat it like it’s your own. See if you like it. It’s a remarkably versatile practice and can actually be applied to almost every aspect of life. And best of all, it’s free. Just like love. So now, please enjoy this love filled, Wedding themed issue of Oasis Mag. Our small but sensational team loves bringing each new issue to you, and we truly hope you get some enjoyment from it. Until next time, DBAD! Cheers,
Jules xx

I’m on good terms with all my neighbours, except one, who thinks he’s Snoop Dogg. He wears this big gold look-at-me necklace, thinks he can pull any chick in the hood and struts around in his Rasta colours like he owns the joint. I’ve never been a fan of the ‘drop in’ visitor and this Bling King with his su casa mi casa attitude rocks up at Warnerworld every bloody day. Dropping in for a feed is one thing, which I’m cool with, but what I’m totally NOT cool with is him running around the backyard trying to shag our chickens. So the whole thing’s escalated and I now find myself at war with a horny scrub turkey. He lives in the big old Raintree next door and watches Harriet, Hazel and Charcoal

El Mundo AT HOME
FOLLOW FOODVIXEN ON FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM FOR MORE FOODIE NEWS AND REVIEWS.
My fiancée and I still reminisce about the El Mundo Tapas days and the lasting taste legacy this little Edge Hill gem left in our lives. We would order our food on the little blackboards, eat our weights worth in Chilli Relleno’s and sip Sangria while we gazed satisfyingly out over bitumen carpark... Ahhh the memories! Indeed, El Mundo Tapas holds a place in the hearts of many a Cairns local. What started out as a tiny suburban restaurant with just a few tables inside, turned into one of the hottest seats in town. As its popularity grew, so too did the tables soon out the front door and stretch along the sidewalk until they simply exhausted all space. It was a sad day indeed when this much loved Cairns restaurant closed its doors in December 2012. Owners Mark and Carlie had dreams of travelling the world, and as the El Mundo doors shut that final time, they clutched

passports in their hot little hands and set about an epic adventure. And travel the world they did, recently returning refreshed and rejuvenated after 4 1/2 years abroad, now with three-year-old son Levi in tow. Despite their love for the hospitality world they knew they wouldn’t be able to go back to restaurant life. It’s a well known fact that the fast paced restaurant world isn’t particularly conducive to family life or parenthood yet they still wanted to continue with their love of food and cooking in the Far North. That is where El Mundo At Home was born. Both Mark and Carlie know the struggles that come with a busy lifestyle. One of the first things to take a back seat when life gets in the way is the ability to create healthy and nutritious food for yourself and your family – this is where El Mundo At Home comes in. Using the abundance of fresh and local produce
we have available in Cairns have begun creating ready to eat meals that you can enjoy at home. Cooked fresh every week El Mundo At Home’s ready-made meals are inspired by global cuisine and culinary destinations visited by Mark and Carlie during their overseas adventures. Think Moroccan Goat Tagine, French Cassoulet, Spanish Albondiga Meatballs and Mexican Chipotle Chicken Soup. El Mundo means ‘the world’ in Spanish and while us locals might not have the means to travel to Peru for a Seafood Chowder or Indonesia for a spicy Beef Rendang, we can still sample the tastes and flavours of dishes from all over the world in the comfort of our own house with El Mundo At Home. Visit www.elmundoathome.com to order your El Mundo At Home meals and search for stockists or you can find them at Rusty’s Markets on Friday and Saturday every week.

It's the 1960's, and swinging bachelor Bernard couldn't be happier: a flat in Paris and three gorgeous stewardesses all engaged to him without knowing about each other. But Bernard’s perfect life gets turbulent when his friend Robert comes to stay and a new speedier Boeing jet throws off all of his careful planning. Soon all three stewardesses are in town simultaneously, timid Robert is forgetting which lies to tell to whom, and catastrophe looms. P ineapple VILLAGE to my own daughter, Stella. At the tender age of 4, she is a sweet and sensitive soul, about to embark on her own school journey.
Kylie Bean, founder of Pineapple Village shares her thoughts on bullying and her inspiration to instigate action. As I poured a morning coffee and flicked through my newsfeed recently, I saw a 14-year-old had taken her own life. It stopped me in my tracks. Dolly Everett had been bullied to a point where she could no longer see benefit in living. Thinking of the grief her family would be feeling, losing their daughter under such unfathomable circumstances, reduced me to tears. My thoughts drifted
As an X-ennial - a child of the 80s and a teen of the 90s - schoolyard bullying was ever-present; however it came in more obvious forms. There was pushing, name calling and teasing; your standard mean girls and schoolyard bullies. But seeing current day stories of teenagers dealing with cyber-bullying makes me fear this age of technology and what’s in store for my daughter’s future. I wanted to do something - anything - to try to prevent this happening again. My mission was to create a Cairns-based online village to raise awareness about bullying: a place where people could feel
safe, increase their confidence, share experiences with others and offer a shoulder to cry on. So far, I have shared tips on how to respond to cyber-bullies, contact details for some of Australia’s best counselling organisations and in coming weeks, I will be sharing information on social media account security, tips for parents, and peoples own accounts with bullying. I hope to create a library of practical information that people can use and share to inspire and educate others. Anyone who wishes to take a stand against bullying is invited to join our Pineapple Village! Search for @pinepplevillage on Facebook and Instagram.
Stand tall, wear a crown, be sweet on the inside. Be a Pineapple.

TROPICAL WRITERS LAUNCH
latest anthology
Tropical Writers are inviting people who love reading to a free public launch of their latest anthology at the Cairns City Library meeting room on Saturday, 3 February at 11.00am. Titled Free Fall and featuring fifty works by northern writers, this is the seventh anthology produced since Tropical Writers formed as an association to support local writers in 2004. In the foreword to the collection, Adjunct Professor and Patron of Tropical Writers, Stephen Torre, writes: “Many of the greatest works of literature have been shaped by the emotive and imaginative power of place . . . these regional writings in turn have an influence in shaping the emotional and intellectual perceptions of tropical communities and those who visit them.” The anthology entries are as diverse as the tropical environment itself, a mix of styles and subjects in realism, autobiography and memoir, science fiction and fantasy, mystery, thriller and poetry. “ It would be difficult to find a collection of recent writing so charged with appeal, or so abounding with literary and stylistic inventiveness,” says Stephen Torre, “with the added bonus, of those of us who live in the tropics, of fascinating glimpses here and there of our own world and our own culture.” Tropical Writers are also the hosts of the biennial Cairns Tropical Writers Festival, next due on 17-19 August 2018. An exciting program of local and visiting writers and publishers is currently being crafted. Mark calendars now. Monthly meetings to support the craft of writing, and other public events throughout the year, are signs of a growing membership for Tropical Writers. Membership is open at http://www.tropicalwriters.com.au/ One such event is the Stories of Saga Land and the Vikings lunch in Cairns, with visiting author Kári Gíslason, on Friday 16 February 2018 at the Shangri-La Hotel on the waterfront. This will be followed by a weekend writers retreat with Kári on the Tablelands. More information and online bookings are on Eventbrite.
Free Fall, the anthology by Tropical Writers sponsored by the Cairns RSL Community Benefit Fund, is available at the launch, or at Collins Booksellers in Smithfield All enquiries: 0437 366 651

At Home With . . THE VAN STAVEREN’S
| w w w. o a s i s m a g a z i n e . c o m . a u
Colin and Lesley Van Staveren certainly are busy. Not only do they run a business together - the local success story of FNQ Plastics, which in 2007 was a small backstreet business, and is now one of the largest plastics fabrication outfits in Far North Queensland. They are also in planning mode of ReGEN Plastics, a new venture set to expand the local recycling industry. It is when the pair are asked about the concept that you see their synergies ignite. ‘Every day, waste products are going to landfill and creating emissions. That is worrying. We as a society aren’t not doing enough to look after this place. We need to take action,’ Colin enthuses. Through family connections, the Van Staveren’s were exposed to patented technology that can essentially close the loop on what is usually a long, complex journey for plastics recyclables. Once sorted, plastic recyclables from Cairns are trucked down to Brisbane for processing. “They are chopped down, washed, drained and processed into extrudable beads and then transported elsewhere to be melted down and moulded into finished product,” Lesley explains. ‘Right now, there’s no recycled goods produced up here. It doesn’t make sense, it can really be done a lot better!’ says Lesley. In addition to these two arms of their business, Colin and Lesley are founding members of an organization created to reduce waste. And they have three young children, aged 3, 4 and 5. It’s enough to make the most organised person exhausted. And from the outside, it seems as though the couple have life completely figured out. However, Col and Lesley are the first to admit it requires a lot of effort every single day to keep all these balls in the air. The couple met in 2007, and were casual acquaintances for a couple of years. However, after their first date in 2010, things started moving very quickly. Both known for their strong personalities, and ‘All or Nothing’ attitude, they recognized quickly that there was something special about their connection. Lesley’s Australian work visa was set to expire, meaning she was on the verge of returning to her native Britain, but Colin wasn’t willing to see their relationship end. “She was ‘The One’”, Col says with certainty. Four months after their first date, the pair were engaged, and a mere six weeks after that, they were husband and wife. The wedding was a well-planned but low-key affair. Lesley’s choice of venue, the stunning chapel at Angsana Palm Cove was known for being heavily booked months in advance, and with just six weeks preparation time for the wedding, Lesley thought there was no chance.
AS MOST OF US WITH YOUNG CHILDREN WOULD KNOW, JUST THE HOME LIFE WITH 3 BABIES IS CHALLENGING LET ALONE BEING IN LEADERSHIP POSITIONS.
As fate would have it, staff at the Palm Cove resort received a cancellation for the exact day they were hoping for just moments before her enquiry, and Lesley took that as a sign. They went on to have three kids in under three years – no mean feat – and they often remark the first six months after their third baby was born, was a total blur. As most parents recall, wrangling young children is an enormous challenge. However, the pair also enjoy giving back to the local community, and regularly volunteer for community leadership positions. Always analysing efficiencies of their systems, the power couple regularly review their home life in the same way as they do their businesses. What systems can be put in place to create more structure and so even the kids at their young age know what’s expected and feel secure in their daily routine. Lesley explains, “We are always reminding each other to not to see challenges as barriers, rather as opportunities.” “Don’t get me wrong - there are without question days that feel like they are never going to end!” Yet, her passion and enthusiasm for her family, her business and her community is infectious. “Family is my everything. At the end of the day, everything we do, it’s all for them,” Col says, embracing his young son. Lesley furthers that she regularly reminds herself to never become complacent. “I’ve learned that if your focus is too heavy on one aspect of your life, then you can almost guarantee that another aspect will slip.” “It’s all about balance.” Issue 22 |

At Lunch With.. MIKE KLUGE In the world of cycling, Mike Kluge is one of the more intriguing characters. He raced professionally on the road, mountain bike, track, and in 1992, became Elite Cyclocross World Champion. He was able to straddle every discipline of two wheels, and become enormously successful in both.
Then, as a 27-year-old, shortly after his world championship victory, the charismatic German focussed his frustrations with the inefficiencies of the bikes he had been riding for years, and created his own bike. He founded Focus Bikes, with the mission of creating the perfect design.
more of the comforts life has to offer. But I still want to have fun and go the same speed. Lately I’ve been loving the e-bike, and we’re I live near the Black Forest in Germany, I’m enjoying riding up and down hills at sunset. It’s beautiful. Some people think that e-bikes are cheating, but I don’t agree with that. You only receive the effort you put into them. I enjoy it and it brings a smile. How is that a bad thing? I also have a smile with my Enduro bike when I’m on some crazy trails and doing jumps. But I truly think that E-Bikes will be a big part of the future.
The brand disrupted the hierarchy, well before market disruption was a catchphrase. In 2000, he sold the business, but has since returned to become the Brand Developer for Focus, one of the major players in the cycling market. Over the years, Oliver Wacek from Trinity Cycle Works, who are stockists of the Focus brand, has formed a friendship with Mike through their joint love of life on two wheels. So, after attending the Tour Down Under in South Australia, January, Mike stopped into Cairns, a town he first visited in 1997 when he competed in the World MountainBike Championships at Smithfield. Thanks to the generosity of Oliver at Trinity Cycles, Jules Steer from Oasis Magazine was delighted to be offered the exclusive opportunity to chat with Mike Kluge, to get a better insight into his life on and off the bike, and talk about the benefits of Cairns becoming a Cycling Hub means to the local community. JULES: Mike, you had a really successful career spanning every discipline on two wheels. What style was your favourite? MIKE: I liked them all for different reasons. When you are on a road bike in the European spring time, it’s cold, raining and pretty gloomy and not very nice. But in those same conditions, with a mountain bike or cyclocross bike off-road, it can be a lot of fun. JULES: Why did you stop racing at a relatively young age? MIKE: In 1992 I was 27, I was getting more and more involved in the business. Then I was doing marathons, like 120km races on a mountain bike. I won a few of them, I really enjoyed it but it was quite long. In 1999, aged 34, I had a few bad accidents, two very bad ones. I almost broke my neck and I suffered from headaches and that is the reason why I had to stop. Yes, it was quite young, but I had my health and future to think of. JULES: If you could only have one bike, what would it be? MIKE: As I’m getting older, and I’m enjoying
JULES: In the past decade, cycling in Australia has become the sport of choice for people aged 35 and above. What do you think has caused this shift.
I ALMOST BROKE MY NECK AND I SUFFERED FROM HEADACHES AND THAT IS THE REASON WHY I HAD TO STOP.
MIKE: “I think people started realising that riding bikes is fun. Remember when we were kids and we would ride our bikes everywhere? It gave us transport. It gave us freedom. I think adults want to experience that again. To be out in nature.” Division 5 Councillor, and avid cyclist Richie Bates, agrees. RICHIE: With events such as Ironman and the UCI Championships investing in Cairns, the prospects of an increased growth in the sports tourism sector is very exciting. This is not just a sporting and social activity. This is an economic transformation. JULES: Richie, how do you see this playing out? Is there the option for the Far North to be seen as a major player in world cycling events? RICHIE: What is significant about the development of cyclesport in Cairns is the way the business and commercial sector are backing it. It’s not just bike shops involved, we are seeing every aspect of the local economy throwing their weight behind events and cycling related activities. Ultimately, I believe this is what will give Cairns a “Cycling Mecca” status and this will be sustainable for the long term. It’s not just a passing fad. JULES: And lastly, Mike, the Ford Focus car … I believe there is a story there? MIKE: There is a story. Basically, I had invested a lot of effort and money into the Focus brand, and I registered the trademark Focus worldwide, except for the UK. Ford wanted to call their car the Ford Focus, but that was my brand. After some time, I met with all the top guys from Ford, and we came to a satisfactory agreement. It was a true David and Goliath. The words of Professor Andrew Holmes, at University of Melbourne have never rung truer. We are seeing an extraordinary increase in the amount of plastic packaging making their way into our oceans, and typically we haven’t seemed to worry about where this plastic has been going, until it made a deleterious ecological impact which caused us to stand up and notice. Australians use an estimated 20 million plastic bags every day, along with 40 million straws. It is estimated that 50 million bags enter the Australian litter stream each year. The world recycles a mere 14% of plastic packaging and the difference lands up in our oceans, killing sea life and endangering the food chain by reacting with industrial chemicals to cause toxic concerns. These tiny particles of plastic or microfibres pose a threat to the food chain as they do not biodegrade and often bind with harmful chemicals, including pesticides and flame retardants, which 26

have harmful effects on plankton and are consumed by fish.
Over the last few decades, Australia has made some thoughtful changes from the top down to promote, monitor and expedite waste management schemes. Education has played a major role in changing perceptions of the consumer culture of Australia and furthering environmental causes.

THE LAST STRAW ON THE GREAT BARRIER REEF A 344, 0002 km campaign to remove plastic drinking straws off vessels operating on the largest living organism in the world. March 2017 was the inaugural launch of the campaign by environmental scientist Nicole Nash, since 17 Cairns vessels and 10 Port Douglas vessels have made the pledge to remain straw free, forever. In 2018 we hope to have on board all Cairns and Port Douglas vessels and venture down to the Whitsundays. BESS
With a campaign aimed to eradicate the younger generations straw habit, 9 year old Molly Steer spearheaded a campaign focussed directly at her peers. In April last year, following on from a revelation about the extent of the plastic straw problem, Molly began campaigning for local schools to cease using straws in their school canteens and tuckshops. At the commencement of the school year, almost 60 schools from across the country have pledged to remove straws from their supplies. 2018 will see further momentum as Molly begins focussing on Cairns cafes and bars. THEY WERE SMALLER THAN ME BUT SO MUCH STRONGER AND PHULMAYA AND SAMJHANA CARRIED MY BAGS AND THEIRS WITH EASE
Friends of the
HIMALAYAN CHILDREN
There’s nothing like a breakdown to help you sort out your priorities in life. In mid-2016, Kirsty Nancarrow was unrecognisable to herself. She let go of a long career with the ABC, damaged by all of the years of stress and exposure to trauma. Kirsty needed to heal. So, not unlike many other people, she went to Nepal.
Kirsty had always meant to go at some point. Having worked with many Nepalese at a high-end Indian restaurant in London more than a decade before, she vowed to visit her friends back in their home country one day. However, it was an interview Kirsty did with Som Tamang, the founder of Cairns-based charity Friends of Himalayan Children after the devastating earthquake in April 2015 that set the chain of events that would see her actually book a ticket and go. Dealing with the raw grief of losing his brother in the earthquake, Som swung into action, mobilising Cairns locals to gather supplies and be part of a significant relief effort. Som made sure some of the more
remote, difficult to reach and hardest hit villages, including his own, Batase, had access to vital medical supplies, food and building materials so communities had shelter for the coming monsoon.
years. So, when Som’s partner Susan Devitt asked for expressions of interest in a womenonly Everest Base Camp trek in September 2018, through their other enterprise, Take On Nepal, she put both hands up.
“I was inspired to help but having experienced natural disasters in far north Queensland, I knew that I could be of more use down the track, when the initial influx of help wanes and people are still in need,” Kirsty said.
Som and Susan have been supporting children in Batase for more than a decade, particularly focussing on girls, who are still vulnerable to child trafficking and early marriage. Through the charity, they have been given access to education and training to be runners and trekking guides so they can have a different future.
So in late October 2016, Kirsty flew alone to Kathmandu and embarked on a month teaching students at Batase School. “I had to get there first and I was pleasantly surprised when two young women from Batase met me to start the two-day trek to the village. “They were smaller than me but so much stronger and Phulmaya and Samjhana carried my bags and theirs with ease,” she said. The volunteer experience did wonders for Kirsty and she vowed to return within two

Amy Hunter… CRICKET BLUEY’S FORESIGHT JOHN FORSYTH Tableland junior cricketer Amy Hunter has come a long way since her first venture into cricket just three years ago, aged 9. Her PE teacher, Graeme Lamperd, encouraged her to take up the sport, when he spotted her enthusiasm at school matches. She joined the Atherton Junior Cricket Club and was immediately accepted by the boys. Amy’s father, Lee, felt to help his daughter he needed to learn more about the game, so he signed up for an entry-level cricket course, along with other club volunteers. Amy, a right-hand fast bowler, was announced to represent Cricket Far North in the Under 12 Boys team at the 2017 Queensland Cricket State Titles in Rockhampton. Here, she captured five wickets in addition to an unassisted run out and helped the team finish in third place. Amy was then selected to co-captain the Queensland Country President’s XI team at the Queensland School Sports Girls State Carnival held in Mackay in October. During the 4-day carnival, Amy took an impressive nine wickets, four catches and three unassisted runouts, to help her team fourth place overall. Whilst in Mackay, Amy was selected for the U13 Queensland Girls State cricket team to play at the National Tournament in January 2018. A week before the Nationals, Amy travelled to Brisbane to attend a training camp with her Queensland team mates. This was also the first time most of the girls had actually met each other. When Amy was presented
THE WIN WAS HISTORIC AS NO STATE HAS EVER WON CONSECUTIVE GIRLS U13 CHAMPIONSHIPS UNTIL NOW
with her Queensland baggy cap, she admits feeling proud and excited. What a wave of emotions for a young girl who turned 12 just weeks earlier! However more excitement loomed, as in January 2018, the team headed to New South Wales to represent Queensland at the National Championships. The maroons made it through undefeated to meet New South Wales in the grand final. With the game beginning to slip away from the Queensland girls well into the second innings, Amy took a catch at short cover to dismiss the top opener from New South Wales. That catch proved crucial as the New
South Wales team fell apart after that dismissal and Queensland went on to victory. The win was historic as no state has ever won consecutive girls U13 Championships until now. Amy attributes much of her success to the support Tony Potts, Graeme Lamperd and more recently Dan Weston, Director of Cricket Far North. I have a feeling Amy Hunter will be a name we will hear more of in the future, as she is also well regarded in Athletics, Netball and Touch Footy. Well done Amy … HOWZAT! Issue 22 |

When We Tied
THE KNOT
A wise woman once declared, “If you liked it, then you should have put a ring on it.” Join us as we open up the family photo albums to reminisce about when some FNQ locals did exactly that.
BOB AND CLAIRE MANNING Married at St Johns Anglican Church, Cairns on 20/09/1969 “Claire and I met in 1963, and I proposed to her in the middle of the dance floor at the Rugby League Ball in Townsville in 1969.”
Memorable moment Bob’s brother George was in hospital, and couldn’t attend the wedding. So, we (the wedding party) visited him at the Calvary Hospital. Two nuns (Sisters of Mercy) decided we should have a celebratory drink, and presented stubbies of room temperature beer with some glasses on a tray with ice. We celebrated with hot beer on ice!
KEVIN AND REBECCA CONLAN
FLEUR AND DAVE WARNER
Backyard wedding on 10/10/2014
Married at Angsana Resort Chapel Palm Cove on 18/10/2003
“We got together after meeting at the Mann Street Touch Footy fields. In 2003, Kevin placed a cryptic word and number puzzle in the newspaper. 11 years and two sons later, we finally got married.”
“We met at the Town Hall Hotel in Bank St, South Melbourne on October 18th, 1996. Dave proposed under a palm tree at Palm Cove. He had the ring box tucked into his sarong in preparation. I still can’t believe I didn’t see it! We were married on the same day a year later.”
Memorable moment: Unbeknown to me, my father was taken to hospital that morning with a suspected heart attack. He managed to get himself released just before the ceremony. Oh, and Kevin also decided to have his bucks party on the day of the wedding. What could possibly go wrong!
Memorable moment: We had traditional Torres Strait islanders drumming and singing in place of the traditional ‘here comes the bride’ which gave the ceremony a beautiful tribal feeling. And the ‘Best Man’s speech went for over 30 minutes! Issue 22 |

KIM COUSINS AND RICHARD SMITH Allamanda Chapel, Palm Cove on 30/12/2017 “We met at work 17 years ago. We both worked for Suncorp in Cairns. Richard proposed to me at North Bar at the Shangri La Hotel. He surprised me with a glass of Moet champagne and he got down on one knee. I was so surprised that I forgot to say “Yes!”, and I cried!”
Memorable moment: As we were declaring our vows, a man walked right in front of the Chapel with his two dogs and that it was quite distracting for our guests. We were so wrapped up in the ceremony that we were oblivious!
RHONDA AND RUSSELL COGHLAN Backyard wedding on 11/02/1982 “We met 6 months before our wedding at the local RSL club. I spotted him and asked a mutual friend for an introduction. And, well, the rest is history! No romantic proposals here! We were building a house together, and realised we should get married before we sign the mortgage. We were married in the backyard of a friend’s house in Sydney. It was a very low-key affair. We invited the bare minimum and didn’t tell them what the gathering was for. Go figure - it worked! 35 years, two kids and three grandkids later and I wouldn’t have it any other way!”
Memorable moment: Russ got out of his good gear as soon as possible and into his standard attire - stubbies and blue singlet. Just as well I love him!
BEN LEE LONG AND LUKE KUBLER Married at Hoi An Vietnam on 14/09/2011 “We at The Beat nightclub in Brisbane in 2006. Five years later, in January, 2011 Luke made dinner arrangements at Café Coco at the Pullman. I had suspected that he was going to propose, so everytime he started to speak, I burst into laughter. He ended sliding the ring across the table and said “Just say ‘yes’!” We got married in Vietnam. Our close friend Melissa was the celebrant, we had 44 friends and family members join us. A beach wedding was planned, however rain saw us relocate into a function room at the resort. Memorable moment: We had an all-white wedding, and all the guests had beautiful outfits made by local tailors. This made the wedding special as everyone in the town was excited for us. After the wedding the entire group travelled north to Ha Long Bay where we all spent two nights on a luxurious Junk boat.

LIZ AND LANCE RICHARDS Married at Angsana Palm Cove on 23/08/1997 “Lance and I met in 1996 while we were working at the Cairns International Hotel. Shortly afterwards, I went to live overseas. We stayed in contact, and then Lance asked me to come home so we could (maybe) get married. I finished up my travels in Europe and came home. Three months later, I was still waiting for that proposal! I got impatient, so one day I popped the question in a coffee shop in Lake Street. He said yes immediately. What the hell had he been waiting for if he was so keen! Men!”
Memorable moment Lance picking up his mate who was hitchhiking to our wedding.
NOELLE AND DARREN HALPIN Married at Shangri-La at the Marina Cairns on 21/04/2007 “Darren and I met when I moved to Innisfail from the Gold Coast in 2002. Darren was a partner in the accounting firm where I worked, and we hit it off. In 2007, our eldest child, Harry, was about 4 months old. We were in Brisbane and got talking about marriage. That same day, we looked at rings, and we were married six weeks later.”
Memorable moment: At the wedding ceremony the best man pretended to not be able to find the wedding rings, after a few minutes and a bit of panic from one of my aunties who proceeded to remove her wedding rings so I could use, they magically appeared. Harry was six months old at our wedding, so before we made our entrance at the reception, I had to slip off my wedding dress and breastfeed him. The things we do!”
RICHELLE AND NATHAN WOODS Emmanuel Uniting Church in Westcourt on 25/09/1999 “I was at Brothers one night in 1997 after watching the footy that afternoon. Woodsie came up to me and said “These blokes over here want to meet you, and so do I”. Real smooth! He proposed to me on a Thursday night after footy training. We were married the first weekend after the footy season. And our honeymoon included attending the NRL Grand Final - that’s life when you marry a footballer!”
Memorable moment: Woodsie’s bucks party was also his Mad Monday celebrations after the 1999 CDRL Grand Final. I didn’t see him again until late Wednesday. I fell over in my wedding gown, trying to reverse into the limosuine, and the photographer drove through Macdonalds for the bridesmaids and I, as we missed having any lunch.

My biggest tip for planning the perfect wedding day, is plan the day together with your partner. Keeping the communication open between you and your partner will shine through during the ceremony and forever after. However, when it comes to wedding hair and makeup, the key is to be super organised. And if you can help it, put finding your stylist towards the top of your To Do list. The key to looking fabulous on your wedding day is to enhance your natural look. You want to look like you walking down the aisle. The aim is to create a gorgeous glow with the makeup, yet still bold enough to be visible in photos. As for the suggestions.

Your dress choice will lead you to particular styles, as well as your hair type, the humidity factor and the weather on the day. When it comes to hair and makeup trials, we have noticed this trend is decreasing. This is mostly because ladies have their hair and makeup

Flash your WEDDING WHITES DENTAL DR DANIEL RICHARDS Cairns Square Dental
All eyes will be on you for your big day, and your smile will be the focal point of their attention. Make sure it’s a smile you are proud of. Some simple planning in the lead up to your wedding day will ensure your smile is dazzling! TEETH WHITENING This is a relatively straightforward process and can easily be done simply by talking to your trusted dentist, very popular amongst brides, grooms, the bridal party, and also family members, who will also be basking in attention at the wedding. You can improve the overall whiteness of your teeth by up to 8 shades, which will provide a huge improvement to your overall appearance. Teeth whitening is a really great way to effectively reverse the effects of things such as smoking and overall aging, making it a great process overall. Just remember,
teeth whitening results are individual to each person, so make sure that you receive a unique assessment in order to get the best service possible for you and your teeth. TEETH STRAIGHTENING Have perfectly straight teeth for your wedding, with the help of Invisalign. Invisalign is similar to traditional braces, designed to give you a balanced, even smile. The Invisalign method of straightening teeth can be more comfortable, pain-free and is virtually invisible compared to traditional braces. In addition to this, effective oral hygiene can be maintained throughout the teeth straightening process. The Invisalign treatment consists of a series of clear aligners that apply a constant force to teeth to affect their movement. They are adjusted every two weeks. They look a little like a
traditional mouthguard, made of a thin, lightweight, clear plastic. The aligners are worn day and night but can be removed when eating, flossing or cleaning your teeth. As each aligner is worn and changed, they move the teeth very gradually until the required result is achieved. WRINKLE TREATMENT & SKIN REJUVENATION Why not tick off all your beauty requirements at the same time. We can also offer wrinkle treatment and skin rejuvenation for your forehead, brow, frown lines, eyes and lips in a safe and surgical environment. As with all treatments, ensure you are using a qualified professional for your dental requirements. The team at Cairns Square Dental would love to make you love your smile on your wedding day.

Saying I Do
ONE HAPPILY EVER AFTER THAT HAD US GUSHING WAS THE NUPTIALS OF NONI AND JUSTIN FROM VICTORIA WHO SAID “I DO” ON JUNE 10, 2017.
IN PARADISE
We absolutely adore weddings at QT Port Douglas. It’s the secret smiles, laughter and fluttering hearts of each beautiful love story that entangles every couple as they vow their everlasting love. One happily ever after that had us gushing was the nuptials of Noni and Justin from Victoria who said “I do” on June 10, 2017. Here is their real life once upon a time … “Introduced by our passion for sport Justin noticed me playing netball and right then and there, in the middle of the court, it was love at first sight. Our love blossomed as we discovered the maps of each other’s hearts and minds. After holidaying in beautiful Port Douglas, we felt an instant connection with the seaside village. We were charmed with its ambience, beauty, climate and the enthusiastic nature of the people. When it came time to start planning our wedding, we knew we wanted the destination of tropical Port Douglas to be the hero. It needed to be a chic yet relaxed vibe that portrayed our fun side and give our guests a trip to remember. As we organised everything via email and phone we had to put a lot of trust in someone else’s hands. The support and flexibility of the staff at QT was nothing short of outstanding. They worked in conjunction with external vendors such as our florist, entertainment, photographer and celebrant to bring together our magical day. No request was ever too much effort. We liked the fact that we could have a ceremony in the beautiful gardens, pre-dinner drinks on Estilo deck and a relaxed open air dinner in Bazaar. We could have all our family and friends together in one unforgettable venue that portrayed everything Port Douglas had to offer…”
AFTER HOLIDAYING IN BEAUTIFUL PORT DOUGLAS, WE FELT AN INSTANT CONNECTION WITH THE SEASIDE VILLAGE.
Thank you to Noni and Justin for sharing your beautiful day and story with us, we wish you two all the best! It’s not always easy planning a wedding, let alone a destination ceremony. The stress can be enough for some couples to throw in the celebration towel. However the dream of a wedding in paradise doesn’t have to be full of hassle and worry. With the help from passionate QT cupids it can be an “I do” with ease. We would love the chance to chat about your happily ever after: (07) 4099 8900 / sales_qtportdouglas@evt.com Issue 22 |

Blue Sky Photography
Your photos will remind you of your big day long after the memories being to fade. I always advise that couples try not to create a list of “must have” photos for the day. Group photos and names are fine, but a detailed list of specific types of photos from the day will ruin the spontaneity of the shoot and make
Tip 2
Wear your shoes in! Make sure they are comfortable and you can walk easily in them. If going to the beach, rainforest or other uneven surfaces, consider having a backup pair of flat shoes you can swap for comfort.
it rigid and more posed. Trust your photographer. An experienced photographer will know what photos you want to have, and how to get the best from the day. Also remember that every day is different, conditions change and so the photographs will also change slightly too. With that in mind, here are my top tips …
Tip 3
The biggest tip we can give you is have fun - when you’re laughing, you’re relaxed, and this will shine through in your photos!
Tip 1
Make sure your venue has a wet weather option, even in the dry season, we can still get the occasional rainy week! And if it does rain on your wedding day, don’t worry! It’s just a different set of opportunities. Photographers can do amazing things with rain, puddles and dark stormy clouds.
Tip 4
Bring an esky with some nibbles and fluids on your photo shoot. They can occasionally take a long time, and hangry people aren’t good for photos! Issue 22 |

Wedding FLOWERS FLOWERS KEARLEY DENT
Cairns Floral Supplies
Wedding fashion changes as often as the seasons, but is more subtle than other types of fashion. In 2018, we will see weddings flowers and bouquets move away from featuring lots of greenery (Pantone’s 2017 Colour of the Year) to this year’s very popular colour of “Ultra Violet”. All shades of purple will make a resurgence this year with “ultra violet” the stand-out colour. Wild bouquets that look thrown together actually require a lot of technical work which is best done by a qualified florist to achieve this look. Also making a resurgence in popularity is the cascade style bouquet. Florists create this style with lots of wiring and technical skills to achieve a gorgeous cascade. If a traditional bouquet is not for you then consider placing your wedding flowers
into a Bolsa Flora base. There are many shapes to choose from allowing a wide variety of designs. Wearing florals is definitely on trend to compliment the bouquets or in some cases instead of them. Flower crowns or floral headpieces look stunning in the hair when considering hair styles for a co-ordinated look. Brides will choose to have their bouquets lashed with luscious satin or silk ribbons with long tails. Dainty corsages look beautiful on the wrist but some corsage designs are literally creeping up the arm giving new meaning to wearable florals! And men don’t miss out of florals either. Buttonholes (or boutonnieres) are usually designed to match the wedding parties’ flowers. Alternatively, floral bow ties are delicate but bold and will certainly make a statement for the groom. The cost of wedding bouquets can be managed by choosing seasonal flowers. And as always, local florists are more than happy to provide advice in this area. www.cairnsfloralsupplies.com.au Unit 21, 223 Hartley St, Portsmith 07 4052 1868 Floral supplies, wedding and gift packaging products

How are your New Year’s Resolutions going? This is traditionally a time when we talk about hopes and dreams holidays, house renovations, getting fit, buying a new car. But we often fail in the steps to get there because we don’t have a plan, or we don’t break this plan up into manageable tasks. As a physiotherapist specialising in chronic pain and headaches, the dreams which I make come true are slightly different. Throughout my career, I’ve taught stroke victims how to walk again; rehabilitated a grandmother so she could go to the beach with her grandkids; and enabled people with debilitating symptoms return to their social lives, free of headaches, nausea and dizziness. Everybody comes for physiotherapy with the hope that they will get some answers and recover from their pain or injury; yet some don’t achieve this. Those who don’t get better,

Manual Lymphatic DRAINAGE depending on the clinical presentation of each patient.
INNER HEALTH Christiane Wagner
Registered Nurse, Massage & Lymphatic Therapist
The deep relaxation is just the beautiful side effect, everyone loves. For more than 30 years, I have been a lymphatic drainage therapist. When applying lymphatic drainage, gentle, rhythmic, circular pumping massage techniques are used to drain congested fluid towards the appropriate lymph nodes. This is different to regular massage techniques and creates a suction effect that improves the overall drainage of congested fluid. Excess tissue is removed, pain is decreased and the remaining tissue becomes looser and softer, resulting in better physical movement and mobility. Patients are encouraged to use a special breathing techniques to stimulate additional lymph nodes. Lymphatic drainage can be applied to the arms, legs, belly, head or spine,

2018 is set to be a designers dream for a playground of choice. Even though we are still set on organic forms and natural tones, get set for an explosion of bold colours with a relaxed bohemian presence. Original art and hand made objects are also back larger then life. Some of us may roll our eyes when we vividly remember the pink and mint green interior combos along with terracotta and lets not leave out good old Brunswick or Forest green, but prepare yourself it is back but in much more sophisticated way. Just remember grey was also one of those 80’s colour and we accepted that with open arms. The minimal clean line furniture is losing it way and we are seeing custom bespoke pieces coming
Trending In The NEW YEAR in to their own, lots of shape and patterns put together in a way that really does reflect ones personality. A shift from everything being brand new and mass produced to good old fashioned hand made items from the past, unusual shapes and complete individuality evolving. Good old floral prints whether it be in wallpaper form or fabric are also edging their way to the lead, however this time round though they are more impressive, bold and oversized for that dramatic effect. So in a nutshell my forecast for 2018 is go with what you really like, look at all your choices, choose what you want, there really are no rules, after all it your home and if you really aren’t sure, look for advice a fresh set of eyes can make the world of difference.

Table Tech Being too tired to cook or pick up dinner is creating a multibillion dollar industry - apps like UberEats and Deliveroo are bringing food straight to customers’ doorsteps from a curated list of local restaurants. It’s a crowded market where a spate of new apps are on the rise, and whilst not all venues are on board, restaurateurs should consider the space and requirements to manage pickups. Tech’s also found on more tables where customers are ordering food and drinks off apps at their convenience. Meanwhile UK outfit DelivAir is using drones, GPS and smartphone signals to bring food straight to customers. Reservations are back Table for two? Get in the queue – is the route many restaurateurs have taken in a no reservations, walk-in approach, seating customers on a first come basis. Alternatively restaurants like Momofuku do small-scale seating without waiting lists which, when five star reviews are added, skyrockets demand. But in 2018 reservations are coming back to make restaurants more accessible. This is thanks in part to Google who’ve just launched insights into wait times and peak visiting periods, giving customers more control of bookings and how long they wait.
2018 TOP FOOD and Hospitality Trends
The food and hospitality scene is a competitive space. From concept dining to the latest technology shaping menus and fitouts, these top food and dining trends will keep you in the loop and dining outside the box.
Cashless Dining More eateries and bars are integrating technology that lets customers transact without cash or cards. Alipay has a 520 million user base and lets 1.4 million Chinese visitors in Australia pay the way they like most – on their smartphones and in their own currency. Alipay arrived on the Gold Coast at the end of 2017 and launches in other parts of Australia shortly to shape the visitor experience and boost spending. Are you a restaurant owner? Find out more about Alipay here. Apps like Apple Pay lets users make payments using an iPhone, Apple Watch or iPad and similarly Samsung Pay lets customers transact and access member discounts without the plastic. Watch out for these additional food trends taking off in 2018: creative use of upcycled surrounds, high-end, noalcoholic drinks and farm-to-shaker cocktails.

The average life expectancy of a person is 700,000 hours and the world is too rich to take trips which look alike – is the concept underpinning a new iteration of accommodation letting guests enjoy tailored experiences and explore places like a local.
Hotels
Co-living spaces While Airbnb is the alternative to hotels, hotel brands are starting a new version of accommodation through co-living spaces. Visitors can choose the level of privacy or community they want to experience like at AccorHotels’ brand Jo&Joe where a new ‘open house’ category includes open-plan, collaborative kitchens, a bar for locals and guests, a ‘happy house’ creating a ‘home-like’ experience and dormitory-style bedrooms. The brand is also doing out-of-the-ordinary (OOO!) accommodation like mud huts and
beach shacks. Time will tell whether this approach takes off, but it does cater to a market of travellers who want a radically different experience to the everyday hotel stay. Pop-up vacations Individually designed rooms are already in place and pop-up restaurants are a thing, but the next step is pop-up hotels in a variety of places. 700,000 Heures, a newly launched hotel group, is calling itself the first wandering hotel in the world where locations at private residences change every six months.
More combinations Hospitality is a competitive space, thirdparty booking sites are curbing prices and the industry is looking at new ways to reach and engage customers. Hotels/ cafes and hotels/galleries are common combinations but one upcoming concept is the hotel/perfumery. Hotels, restaurants and shops are already creating their own scents, next is creating spaces where guests can test out and take them home. In New York, The Mark Hotel is launching ‘Le Shop’ online which sells branded clothing, there are hotels where you can purchase their customised brand of beds, and in Tokyo Hotel Koe is adding a bakery and clothing store on each of its three floors. Bartercard – helping restaurants and hotels succeed for 27 years Bartercard is a business marketplace where members exchange products and services without the use of cash – boosting cash flow to fund business expansion, attracting new customers and increasing profits along the way. We know small business inside out and can put your restaurant or hotel brand ahead of the curve.

New Year’s HEALTH CHECK ACCOUNTANT CHARISSE RUSSELL Director
It’s time for a health check. A Business Health check that is. As another Christmas and New Year’s celebration fades into the past along with our resolutions (even those posted on social media with an inspirational quote over a picture of someone doing yoga on the peak of Everest with dolphins and unicorns frolicking in the distance) the time to take a look at the way your business is going is upon us. Getting back into the swing of things can be an ‘All Hands On Deck’ situation. But it’s important to take a little time now to step back and have a look at how things are going for your business and to take in the bigger picture, which can often be almost impossible to see when you have your head down in the trenches. The following are a few things to go over: 1. How are you tracking to meet your
financial goals for the financial year? If you didn’t really set any, take a look at where you are now and set a goal to achieve by June. You don’t need a detailed plan for world domination, just an amount that would make keeping on top of the bills easier to achieve. 2. Given the state of your Financial goals, have you been paying enough tax instalments to avoid a nasty bill when you lodge your return or should you increase your payments. 3. How well are you keeping on top of your workload and customer expectations? Is it time to take on a new staff member (the 20K Youth Boost has been extended until June 2018) or, is it time to make the hard decision to reduce your staff hours or numbers. 4. With the $20,000 instant asset write off still in play, it’s about now that you should start to assess whether or not buying new equipment to offset against
any tax payable next financial year is a viable option for you so that you don’t end up making a rushed decision during the June sales push. Not all of the suggestions listed may apply to your business situation, but it is always important to take a step back from the everyday grind in order see the bigger picture to help you see where you are, and to make sure that you are where you want to be. Who gets the FAMILY PETS? LAW TAMLYN LEAHY Family Lawyer
Families are usually very attached to their pets and consider them to be a member of the family, so in the case of family separation, who gets the family pet? The issue of pet custody is not often a dispute heard before the Courts, however legal precedent has been established even so with a number of cases. Under Australian Family Law, pets are considered “chattels”. Case law has established that the Courts treat pets as property, and capable of being included in the property pool and up for division between the parties. Pets are treated in the same manner as
say furniture, motor vehicles and tools and equipment and the Courts have the requisite power to make orders with respect to property including who will have possession of a pet. When it is unable to be decided amongst the parties, the matter of who gets the family pets is determined by considering the relationship the parties have to the pets. For example, who primarily cared for the pet, who paid for the vet care, who has the ability to house the pet. In instances such as the pet being a horse, there could be a significant expense associated with stabling the horse. Does the pet have an attachment to a particular spouse or the children of the relationship? If the children are to live with one parent for the majority of the time, then it may be that the pet remains with that spouse, in order to maintain a sense of stability for the children. Separation is a difficult time for families and particularly children, and taking the family pet away from a child could be even more disruptive.
There has been a push overseas recently, particularly driven by animal rights activists, for the “best interests” of pets to be considered by the Court. A new law in Alaska in 2017 requires the Court to take a pet’s wellbeing into consideration. Australian experts predict Australia is a long way off from introducing similar laws. It can be a very emotive issue as to who will get the family pet at separation. Perhaps one party will feel very strongly about the issue and it may be a foregone conclusion as to who will be the best pet parent in the circumstances. Ultimately the Court encourages separating spouses to mediate issues between them and to reach an agreement and that includes the pets. When family relationships get complicated evidence shows quite clearly the benefits of having a pet on our mental health. Pets bring us joy and comfort and time out with your favourite four-legged pal is a remedy in itself!

New Year, NEW LOOK MARKETING JONATHON PACKHAM
Platinum Graphics Each year I spend some time looking inwards towards my business. I look at my entire branding from logo right through to my website to evaluate what my business looks like to my existing and potentially new customers. It is not an easy thing to be self-critical. I find that it is usually a good idea to have a fresh set of eyes take a closer look which offers a fresh perspective. In a world where trends are constantly changing, it can be hard to maintain a modern image. Rebranding is an option that business owners often overlook, but keeping your look, feel, and values fresh can be the key to keeping your business at the top of your industry. Perhaps the biggest advantage to refreshing the look and feel of your brand is the ability to reach new potential customers. When you focus on new aspects of your business and promote them correctly, people will take notice. Rebranding can offer the stimulation your business needs to

create new growth in an ever-evolving market. Rebranding has one simple goal, keeping your brand current. Design trends play a major role in how potential or current customers perceive your company. Ensuring that your look is always ahead of the curve, shows your customers that you pay attention, and you’re also savvy about trends within your industry. It’s hard to show how your company has grown when your brand doesn’t reflect it. If you’ve expanded to offer new products, grown to include more services, or set new goals for yourself, rebranding is a great way to show that your business is evolving. While it’s important to stick to your traditional services and story, updating your services and the way you promote them can help you get more business. Rebranding is a valuable tool when it comes to expanding your brand and
helps you build brand awareness--and it can help you achieve more than you may think possible. Remember that your logo is just a small part of the overall branding of your business or product. It’s often the most recognisable part of your business used to communicate with target audiences. This sometimes means that a logo is often the only element that a lot of businesses concentrate on when rebranding. A brand is the sum of all of the touch-points that come into contact with current or potential customers. These touch-points include the logo, stationery, marketing material and your website. Platinum Graphics have Business Startup Packages which can also be used to rebrand your business. They include all the essential touch points plus a bit more for a fixed price. Make 2018 your year and brand or rebrand with Platinum Graphics

Expo attendance remains high and opening up the Expo to the general public in 2008 has been positive. Attendance by parents, other job seekers and the general public is also expected to continue to rise. The BLA is committed to expanding the Expo
and maintaining a quality event to accommodate these future increases and ensure wide-reaching and meaningful outcomes for the region’s education and employment sectors. Whilst the BLA (a not-for-profitorganisation) makes every effort to run the Expo as a cost-neutral event, (the only event of its type for secondary school students in FNQ) we will continue to maintain the affordability for students, teachers, parents, job seekers and the public to attend free of charge to access vital career development information and opportunities.
